Walking for mood improvement

by MADELEINE LEHANE

Good walks can be great for mental wellbeing, having a positive effect on mood, fatigue, self-esteem and quality of sleep. The pandemic had a detrimental effect on sleep for many folk but walking aids good sleep because it can reduce stress and anxiety. Being physically active can reduce the risk of becoming depressed and it may also help those who are depressed to recover and stay well.

If that's not enough encouragement, walking is beneficial for problem-solving - apparently Tchaikovsky walked every morning before working on his music, and Einstein liked to stroll on the beach when he needed to work out a challenging problem! Below are details of a circular walk starting at The Buff Orpington Pub, Crescent Way, and taking in part of Farnborough, approximately three miles in total. There are no stiles to climb and this is an easy walk to suit all ages including children. In spring you will see wild flowers; in summer butterflies, in autumn the leaves turn gold and in winter there may be some mud to squelch through! If you would like to identify the trees or flowers enroute, try a leaf snap app on your phone. - From The Buff pub walk up the big green towards Green

St Green, keeping to the right of the green and away from Sevenoaks Road.

- At the top right corner of the green, by the picnic table and bin, cut through the short path on to Farnborough

Hill road near the A21.

- Cross over Farnborough Hill and then cross the A21 at the traffic light pedestrian crossing. - Turn right, walk towards the roundabout and take the first exit (Farnborough Hill), then take the second exit at the mini roundabout continuing on Farnborough Hill. - Walking uphill, with the field on your left, go past the bus stop and then enter the field by the metal gate on your left. Go right, and follow the path around the field edge uphill. - Keeping the open field to your left, the path will curve around and then flatten out. Enjoy the views! You can see across to High Elms. - Continue to follow the perimeter path around, always keeping the open field to your left, and then go downhill to Shire Lane.

- When you reach Shire Lane, turn right, cross over Church

Road and take the footpath straight ahead. - At the wooden gate, follow the footpath right and slightly uphill through the wooded area, passing the Lubbock family burial ground, until you can see the back of St

Giles Church Farnborough. - At the footpath junction go through the gate, and take the path straight ahead (not downhill). You will pass more of the graveyard which is to your right behind the hedge, but keep the field to your left. - Follow the footpath through fields out in the open. - When the path begins to curve left downhill go through the big gap on the right into a further field. - Then turn left down the wide grassed path and at the bottom turn left and follow the bridleway alongside Shire

Lane.

- When you meet Church Road again cross over it and continue along the footpath to the end of Shire Lane. - Follow a little uphill and back through the metal gate, turn right on to Farnborough Hill, retracing your steps so you go back down and across the A21 at the traffic light crossing and across the big green, back to the Buff pub. - Refreshments and loos may be found at Crescent Way, depending upon the day/time you walk. Enjoy!
