If anyone knows who the local Parcelforce driver is, he kindly paid for my two children’s ice creams and then drove off before I could even say thank you. If anyone knows him please say thank you. Such lovely people out there I will return the deed by doing a good deed myself next!

I recently read “modern art” by Maureen Hillier, a poem published in your magazine issue 6, which I enjoyed, thank you for publishing it. I have recently published a book ‘Positive Poems’ which I have shared a poem from (below). I am a local author who is hoping to inspire others to step out of their comfort zone and go for their dreams.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to the lovely lady and her two children who were crossing Southlands Rd when I thought my dog had got out. I asked if the lady could keep an eye out for my dog and they helped me look. My dog was in the garden behind some wood so he was OK, but I'd just like to say what lovely people there are out there thank you so much again!

Acts of Kindness

We sometimes forget that horses were essential to the Army during World War One. Much attention has been focused on the dreadful conditions and sufferings of the men in the trenches, yet the suffering was shared by the horses as seen in the book, play and film War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. All the armies used horses and mules.

Horses in the First World War

by PAM PREEDY, historian & author

Pay a visit to Bromley Historic Collections on the 2nd floor of Bromley Central Library to learn more about Bromley Borough’s history.

In Bromley Mr L Y Squire came to talk about the work of the Veterinary Department in France:

Mechanised means of transport were only just coming onto our streets and onto the battlefields – initially in the form of motor bikes and buses for the troops, and then the introduction of tanks into the fight in September 1916.

“In France a hospital had been built to accommodate a thousand horses. One thing that they were very much in need of – rugs.”

6 Life in... BROMLEY October 2022 lifeinmagazines.co.uk

“A horse belonging to the Co-operative Society was taken from the shafts and commandeered.

Arthur J Coke secretary of the Blue Cross Fund, (nothing to do with the RSPCA) asking for help, said

“The society (RSPCA) had supplied thousands of wither pads and sheep skins for the horses. They had also undertaken to give lectures to the recruits in training camps, and had distributed 48,000 leaflets on the question of first aid to horses. The society had supplied and were maintaining six ambulances, with ointments and dressings for use in the field.”

Whereas, it seems to have been less of a problem for the rural districts in Bromley, it is understood that farmers throughout the district are quite satisfied with the way that they have been treated with regard to the taking of horses for military use.”

Pam Preedy

In the first few weeks of the war in Bromley, members of the Remount Service of the British Army commandeered and purchased horses from the local area. Sometimes this was of great inconvenience to the owners as the horses were in use at the time and would have a deleterious impact on their businesses, particularly those serving the people in the town.

“Mr Rogers, cab proprietor, Bromley South, had six horses taken on Wednesday morning. Mr Rogers’ cabs were busily engaged on Wednesday conveying to their homes persons returning, in many cases hurriedly, from their holidays, and persons going to military centres. Owing to the demand for horses by the Government, some of the tradesmen in town find it difficult to make their deliveries, and they are appealing to their customers to assist them as much as possible by fetching goods.

community History

Conditions were severe for horses and mules at the front. Many suffered wounds in battle, mange, were injured by poison gas, endured exhaustion and some suffered mental problems. Mobile veterinary sections were established to take the sick and wounded to veterinary hospitals where they could be treated. A typical veterinary hospital could take 2,000 patients. It was up to the Remount Service to care for the horses and mules once they had been treated by the vets. The success rate was high; 2.5 million animals were hospitalised in France and two million were returned for duty at the front. In Egypt there were also separate camel hospitals under the command of Army Veterinary Corps officers with specialised knowledge of camels

Horses and mules were essential to the Army during World War One. They shared the trials and tribulations with their humans. They gave their lives, but could have no understanding of the reason why they were called upon to work in such appalling conditions.

At the outbreak of war, there were 25,000 horses at the disposal of the British Army. Under the Horse Mobilisation Scheme of August 1914 the number of horses purchased increased to 115,000. They had work to do including pulling the artillery and equipment carts and riding into battle with the men. For every two men who were lost, one horse was killed. In September 1916, during the Battle of Verdun, 97 horses were killed by a single shot from a French naval gun.

In 2019 I was asked to adapt it into a play for a festival in Rochester, and the Hempstead Players did a wonderful, movingperformance. It is being staged again this year at three more venues including the Glass Box Theatre in Medway.

Tell us more about how you were inspired to write… Because of these wonderful, courageous people, I decided to write a novel about Parkinson’s. I did it to raise awareness and money, and had no concept of what would happen next, but the Parkinson’s community embraced me andmy novel, which has sold all over the world. I was overjoyed and amazed when the Michael J. Fox Foundation put it on theirwebsite. Parkinson’s is unfortunately on the increase, but don’t imagine my novel is depressing. One reader told me she washaving to sleep in the spare room because she was reading it in bed and laughing out loud!

10 Life in... BROMLEY October 2022 lifeinmagazines.co.uk

It’s a lot of fun, meeting the guys and sharing all the stories of my life, from when I was a kid and right the way through. And it’s a nice intimate setting, a nice number in the audience.

You’ve enjoyed success as a player, manager and commentator – what advice would you give our readers who are hoping to make the most of their talents and achieve their goals?

A rare orchid, closely related to those that informed Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, has been restored to the scientist’s former garden at Down House in Kent by English Heritage. Following two years of careful conservation and management by the charity’s gardeners and volunteers, Down House’s violet helleborine orchid population has doubled in number and is currently enjoying its best flowering season in living memory. Darwin spent many hours in the gardens at Down House making observations and conducting experiments that helped develop his ground-breaking theories - with the helleborine orchid and its relationship with insects playing a key role. The violet helleborine orchid is particularly interesting as it is pollinated entirely by wasps. The plant’s nectar is intoxicating to wasps, making them fall about as though drunk and unable to clean themselves of pollen. The wasps then travel from flower to flower, carrying the pollen and pollinating as they go. Without wasps, there would be no violet helleborine.

It’s great for them and it’s great for the game. It’s like another arm of football that will keep getting bigger and bigger – I think it’s a really positive thing for the game.

The Lionesses’ success brought the country together (well, certainly England anyway!) –what role do you think football can play in our local communities?

You’re appearing with Graham Roberts, another Tottenham legend. How often does he remind you that it was his solo run that led to the penalty you scored in the 1982 Cup Final against QPR?! Yeah, but it was my tackle that won the ball in the first place, and I always tell him that! But Graham was a great player in his own right, a great defender that used to kick lumps out of people.

Bromley’s nearest Premier League team is Crystal Palace – what sort of memories do you have of playing at Selhurst Park?

A rare sight…

Well, it’s been a long time since I played there, but there were good days and there were bad days. I got sent off there too, which was a shock, and it should never really have been a sending-off offence. But I scored some great goals there too and it was always a tough game –always.

AN EVENING WITH GLENN HODDLE

Ahead of the show, which takes place on Monday, 10th October, Life In…Magazines were lucky enough to speak with Glenn to ask him about all things about his upcoming appearance…

What do you most enjoy about the ‘An Evening With…’ format?

One of football's greatest talents and former England manager, Glenn Hoddle, is coming to Bromley this month in An Evening with Glenn Hoddle at the Churchill Theatre, hosted by his former Tottenham teammate Graham Roberts.

The event will include a live and uncut interview where you’ll hear never heard before insights from the former Tottenham and England star on what it’s like to play for and manage both club and country. Audience members will also get the chance to put your questions across to Glenn in an audience-led Q&A.

You’ve got to work on what makes sense to you. You have to listen to the more experienced people, and then decide what suits you. And just because someone tells you something, it doesn’t mean that’s a given. You have to make your own choices and form your own opinions about everything.

Aslunch.we all munched and chatted on the variety of salads on offer, Zavier, the butler, came in with a bowl of freshly cut lettuce and tomatoes to top up the near empty bowl. We all dug in, but just as my fork reached my mouth, the producer spoke. ‘I hope you all enjoy the salad,’ he said. ‘I grew it myself. The tomatoes I grow in my greenhouse and the lettuce gets a lot of sunlight, it has its own patch behind the greenhouse. Zavier has just picked it, so it’s fresher than fresh. Enjoy.’

It was when I was in line for a film part. I, and other prospective actors, were invited to the film producer’s house for a lunch and get-together. It was a large house in a prestigious street in London. I had enquired before I came about my well-behaved dog and was told this producer had one the same breed and I was invited to bring mine with me. I duly arrived at the right time and was welcomed with a glass of Pimms. The house was on a street, so I asked if there was greenery or a park nearby so I could take her for a little pee before lunch. I was told the producer’s dog had use of the large garden and we were welcome to do the same. There were poop bags by the greenhouse, if I needed them, he added.

There’s been so much talk lately about the rising cost in food it is no wonder that so many people have started to bake their own bread and grow their own vegetables. Personally, I am quite useless - I have tried, many times, to grow a little herb garden. I follow the instructions to the letter, but fail miserably. All my seeds ever raise is laughter as they show no sign of appearing from under the earth. I wonder if the God of vegetablegrowing is paying me back for a faux-pas I committed a few years ago.

My dog is quite shy, so we wandered around the back and after our long drive, she had a very long pee in a patch of greenery and then in we came for our delicious

My forkful of lettuce froze in front of my mouth as I realised that my dog had just had a very long pee over the beautiful sun-filled patch behind the greenhouse where he grew this prizewinning lettuce. I didn’t ask how thoroughly the lettuce had been washed, and I didn’t have the courage to own up to my sin. I’m afraid I watched as others munched happily on the green salad. The God of vegetable patches paid me back though. I didn’t get the job.

Having helped Bromley’s men's and ladies' football teams celebrate their own successful 2021/22 seasons, I was delighted to bring the ball onto the pitch for Bromley FC’s first game of the 2022/23 season against Altrincham. A big thanks to Mark Hammond for making us feel so welcome and fingers crossed 22/23 will be another winning year.

Prior to the Queen’s passing, life had been similarly busy. I worked with the Rotary Clubs of Bromley to stage a wonderful Ukraine Independence Day event at The Warren. There was fun for all the family, and I hope the event went some way to making our Ukrainian guests feel welcomed while also raising much needed funds to aid those struggling in their homeland.

I, like everyone across Bromley, and the nation, have found recent weeks very difficult, following the sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen. She meant so much to me and to all of us, and the majority of us would not have known a time when she was not our monarch.

But in my role as Mayor of Bromley, it has been my honour to lead the borough in its commemoration of the life of our wonderful sovereign. It was my duty to lead both the silence held at the Civic Centre on the day after Buckingham Palace released the sad news, and also to read the proclamation of His Majesty King Charles III to the borough two days later.

Career & Performance programmes that provide clarity of the role and responsi bilities, understanding of expectations and how to deliver results.

I’ve learnt that if something needs to be addressed then don’t leave it but deal with it straightway. For example, if we get anti-social behaviour in our car parks then it’s important that this is dealt with immediately so I would tend to work with my colleagues in public protection and the police to resolve

If you could pass on one message to the public about your job, what would it be?

And finally, what do you enjoy doing outside of work?

You never know what’s going to happen in the next 10 years. New technology is always there, such as automatic number plate recognition, and different ways to pay, like cashless parking payments, credit cards and Apple Pay rather than the traditional cash payments.

I may have certain schemes on the go, such as tariff reviews, new car parking projects, together with the checking and inspecting of car parks. For instance, both Councils have several Park Mark Awards. This means that they have reached excellent standards in car park management, such as in areas of security, lighting and none or low crime levels. I tend to be proactive and am always looking at ways to make improvements, for instance the Civic Centre car park floor levels were colour coded to help motorists to find their car on their return.

Hi Gerry! So, what exactly does your job entail?

What are some of the challenges you face in your job?

I write stories and record pop songs which I’ve done since the 90s. My short stories are on Amazon at the moment under Gerald Broomfield. I’m also starting to put my songs on streaming outlets like Amazon Music and Spotify, etc (search for Gerry Broomfield)

Don’t consider people in the parking sector as strangers or people that you can’t talk to. We are all the same and are all members of the public. We all have cars and families and experience the same joys and frustrations. It’s always good to write or pick up the phone and talk to us.

So, what does a typical day look like?

I think the variety of the job, every day is not the same, is something I enjoy. I can never say what I’m doing this week will be the same as next week.

Gerry is Bromley’s Car Park Facilities and Assets Manager for Bromley, having worked his way up from parking attendant over 45 years ago. He’s now responsible for 34 car parks in Bromley and 19 in Bexley. We sat down with Gerry to find out what his job entails and where he thinks technology might play a bigger role in the industry’s future…

Not many, some customers can get angry if they feel they have been hard done by, but again, I find its best to take your time to listen to their complaint, speak to them if possible and get their viewpoint. Quite often something good and productive may come out of the conversation.

If people do have a query, where can they go? Best is to visit Bromley and Bexley’s websites where you will find ways to make contact, either by phone, email or an address to write to. People can also get in touch via social media such as Twitter.

I manage a total of 53 public car parks across Bromley and Bexley, working with our parking contractor, Apcoa. Monitoring the car parks is important to make sure that cleaning, maintenance, and any Health and Safety issues are dealt with quickly. New technology also plays an important part, so for instance I also get involved in new car parking schemes to make sure they’re implemented correctly.

Why should I have my hearing tested?

14 Life in... BROMLEY October 2022 lifeinmagazines.co.uk

How should I look after my hearing?

Health Check

Not being able to hear seriously impacts your quality of life, not to mention talking with friends, family and others. I recommend if you show any of these early signs, you should get it checked. If you are concerned about someone close to you who struggles to hear, speak to them about getting a free hearing test and why not join them to offer support if they need a little bit of encouragement?

If you notice any change to your hearing, large or small, then always get it checked. Having a hearing test should be done regularly like you do with your teeth and eyes. This is important however old or young you are. If you work in a noisy place or have a history of hearing loss in your family, have a hearing test, it only takes 30-60 minutes. Call us on 0208 460 8954 or email admin@hearbase.com and book your free hearing test at Hearbase Bromley today!

Well, to start, our hearing tests are completely free. This isn’t unique to us, you can get your hearing tested elsewhere, but as we are expert audiologists, if we find anything of concern after your free hearing test, we will point you in the direction of specialist services quickly. We are a really friendly bunch of people and our focus is to listen and help you to manage your hearing.

I have been at Hearbase for nearly 4 years now and I enjoy my work, especially meeting and helping so many people in the local community, old and young, from all walks of life. I am based at the Hearbase Bromley branch, 4 East Street, BR1 1QX (opposite the old Post Office).

An interview with senior audiologist, Ana Rodrigues, Hearbase Bromley, 4 East Street, BR1 1QX

What are the first signs of a hearing problem?

Some of the early signs are when you struggle to keep up with conversation in noisy places, when your family tell you the TV is too loud, or when you have difficulty hearing people clearly. If you experience ringing or buzzing in your ears, or head, or a feeling of blockage, these can also be early signs of hearing loss. Also, if you find you can hear better when you look at people’s faces that can be a red flag and you should get your hearing tested.

What is an audiologist?

How long have you been at Hearbase?

Why should I go to Hearbase Bromley?

An audiologist is a clinical health care professional responsible for helping those who have problems with their hearing and balance disorders. It’s a highly qualified role, and each day an audiologist could be assessing and fitting hearing aids, providing ear protection, tinnitus support and advising on balance and wax removal.

In all cases please do not use any cotton buds or other devices to manually remove the wax yourself, and do not use home irrigation kits, devices or ear candles. If you think you have excessive ear wax, I strongly advise you to contact me at Hearbase Bromley so I can remove this safely, quickly and hygienically using micro-suction (like a small hoover) or water irrigation.

… AND GET YOUR EAR WAX REMOVED BY A PROFESSIONALadvertorialTOO!

All too often in my clinics I see first-hand how poor ear health can affect someone’s social interaction and quality of life. Excessive build-up of ear wax can cause hearing difficulties and discomfort. It may also contribute to ear infections. Patients using hearing aids may find that they are unable to use these effectively. Occasionally ear wax can also be hiding an undiagnosed issue and an appointment with your Hearbase hearing specialist will alert you to any findings.

Why does excessive ear wax need to be removed?

What should someone do if they think they have ear wax?

Now I'm part of 7,000 households engaging with sustainable living through the support of Greener & Cleaner in the borough. We helped ensure the highest response rate of any London borough to the council's draft Air Quality Action Plan, highlighting just how important it is to have a group like ours increasing awareness.

Can you provide a bit of background about how you founded the charity?  I felt both logically and morally obligated to set it up. I'm extremely passionate about our efforts to support local changes - from impactful local engagement with sustainable living (cutting our carbon footprints) to boosting the borough's flora and fauna (improving local biodiversity). (if you’re just starting out in married life)

The results showed that Prague tops the list as the best place to ‘Czech’ out for newlywed couples. The city scored highly on the number of green spaces, the cost of transport and the number of cultural activities on offer. Interestingly, the top four best cities for newlyweds are situated in Europe; with Athens, Venice and Rome coming second, third and fourth, respectively.

As many of us continue into adult life, we subconsciously draw in partners who we hope will heal our wounds.

yourself to become vulnerable will help you grow. Consciously, you become aware of your patterns and the wounds you’re tending to - what your ‘inner child’ needs. It’s a space where you accept your flaws and embody your wounds of the past. You are no longer looking for anyone to fix or save you, you are ready for connection and support and you want nothing more than to reciprocate.

In this fast-paced world, these relationships can come about to serve and satisfy our own needs. Relationships can easily become extremely selfish and, in-turn,

A new study by Purely Diamonds reveals the top cities for newlyweds to consider, based on the elements that are the most important to new married couples. Taking a list of the 34 most-visited cities around the world, each was scored on the average rent, utilities (including 60mbps Internet), safety, climate, pollution, essentials (bread, milk, eggs), transport (per person), green space, culture (museums, cinemas and restaurants) and job opportunities.

How to find (and keep) the spark alive Relationships

you really love someone, it’s not only something you feel when times are good - it’s not a matter of convenience. It is the very foundation for staying together when times are bad, when life gets tough. This is the time to pull those you love close, not push them away. You are committing to their whole self and you are understanding that the world is going to change, and you will adapt with it.

Relationships are there to hold the mirror up to us, to show us the wounds we hold and the trauma we need to release. If you expect your partner to ‘meet your every need’ so you can feel loveable, whole and complete, you end up draining Allowingthem.

However, often they are usually someone similar to the person who originally wounded us when we were younger.

The best cities to live

In light of this month’s pull-out-and-keep wedding supplement, our relationship feature focuses on married life…

It is here that the relationship evolves towards something much greater than individual satisfaction. The partnership becomes a journey into a loving evolution that allows both partners to expand and grow more than they could alone.

by EMILY WYSOCK-WRIGHT, Adira Lifestyle

From the moment we are born, we all expect to be loved and kept safe. Many of us received limiting messages when we were growing up that we weren’t good enough or that we didn’t measure up to our parents’ expectations. We felt and internalised the pain of being criticised. It was impossible to know how this inflicted pain on the little being we were back then… we experience so much pain we lock that little person away and get on with life squeezing into the mould set by everyone around us. We begin to adopt coping mechanisms which then become ingrained in us such as dis-association, people-pleasing and narcissistic behaviour. Some will be more severe than others, but mostly we are clever enough to conform to a normal life. However, we live, breathe and play out our traumas and pain throughout the relationships we hold closest to us, until we finally see the light and how we can heal ourselves.

It’s commonly thought that when you find ‘the one’, there will be a spark that continues burning throughout the relationship. In the beginning it is exciting, your partner is flawless and you can’t get enough of them. However, as time goes on, we settle in, flaws emerge and the degree of intimacy changes. I have a strong belief that the ‘spark’ is within you, and it is your responsibility to keep it alive.

3. Reduce staining: Smoking, as well as consuming foods and drinks such as tea, coffee, curries, red and white wine, etc can stain the teeth. Drinking through a straw can help keep your teeth whiter for longer. Alternatively, try drinking sips of water in between.

Over Brits gained insight into some of the most romantic love stories, by helping couples from 30 to 80-years-old find the words to convey their experiences. In their nationally representative research, the company found that over half of Brits claim to believe in 'the one' and that 25% of those surveyed also feel that their love story could be translated into a book or a film.

5 ‘at home’ tips for a winning smile

4. Ditch lemon in your water: If you’re on a prewedding diet which involves you drinking hot water and lemon, or cider vinegar, be mindful that they are very acidic, and can cause dental erosion. Your teeth may become yellower as a result and your teeth may become weaker.

5. Opt for teeth whitening: Forget the DIY treatment for tooth straightening kits or whitening treatments and let a professional get you that winning smile. DIY kits run the risk of irreparable damage to your teeth and gums - which is the last thing you want to gamble with just before your big day.

Beautiful bride makeup tips

Decide on the kind of look you want

For your lips choose a nude or natural high shine colour or even a red for that ultra glam vibe! If you want to play safe, just wear your favourite colour. To complete the look, use a finishing powder and makeup spritz for makeup longevity, to ensure you feel radiant for the entirety of the day.

If you are wearing makeup on your big day, plan ahead! If you intend to apply it yourself, have some dry runs and if you’re booking a makeup artist, make sure you do so in plenty of time to make sure they are available.

Above all, keep your makeup simple and your photographs will exude confidence and beauty.

WEDDING SPECIAL - PULL-OUT-AND-KEEP

Avoid doing anything experimental close to the day of your wedding – so no trendy facials or chemical peels. Exfoliate weekly, hydrate and moisturise daily, and always protect with Sun Protection Factor.

When choosing a makeup artist, always book a trial or consultation. Have a practice run, give your artist as much information as possible with photos (Pinterest is a great

source of ideas for makeup and hair), and together you can create your perfect look. A good tip is to think about whether you’ll be wearing your hair up or down, if you’ll be wearing glasses/contact lenses and let the makeup artist know in advance so they can match the look accordingly. Makeup 'must haves' for beautiful photographs Invest in a natural foundation and powder that matches your skin tone. This will leave a soft and smooth look and you can re-touch if necessary. Primers are an important product, and help makeup adhere to the skin to ensure it lasts longer. Bronzer can double as a blush to highlight the cheeks, or use a rose toned/peachy blush to create a stunning complexion. Lightly dust onto temples and blend.  Your eyes are an important feature so use neutral colours like opals, bronzes or coppers on your eyelids. Apply waterproof mascara in layers on the top and bottom lashes for fullness and volume. If you're wearing lash extensions try them out first; they may need trimming.

What to try: The Jojoba Company Pigmentation Oil with Carrot & TYROSTAT™, evens skin tone and visibly reduces pigmentation. With naturally derived ingredients including skin-brightening beta carotene and vitamin C and buriti oils, this oil nixes dullness, wrinkles, and moisture loss. There’s nothing worse than being kept awake at night by unwanted noise. Silentnight’s sleep expert, Hannah Shore reveals her top tips on how to combat those distracting decibels and have a better night’s sleep…

Earplugs

Rearrange your furniture

If you're suffering from living with an ongoing noise and are struggling to fall asleep, earplugs are probably the most effective solution for you. You can purchase a good set of earplugs pretty much anywhere and they’ll certainly be worth the investment. After all, we think a good night's sleep is priceless.

How to... deal with sun-induced pigmentation

White noise

If you're living in a shared house, or your bed is on a connecting wall to your neighbours, the secret to a quiet night's sleep could be simple - try distancing yourself from the source. Try rearranging your furniture, moving your bed to the opposite side of the room, or as far away from the noise as possible. Also positioning large pieces of furniture such as wardrobes against a noisy wall can help to muffle sound coming through.

The problem: When your skin is exposed to the sun and isn’t protected with sunscreen, melanocytes – the skin cells responsible for producing melanin, or pigment – go into overdrive as a protective response. Your skin produces the extra melanin to shield the internal structure of the skin cells and their DNA. This extra pigment then shows up as brown spots. As a preventative step, daily sunscreen is a must. But alongside that, vitamin C is one of the best ingredients to look for. It’s an antioxidant that neutralises damaging free radicals caused by sun exposure and brightens the skin by inhibiting the action of tyrosinase, an enzyme necessary for pigment production. It can also help fade existing dark spots.

HOW TO SLEEP IN NOISY PLACES

Soothing, ambient sounds known as white noise can be helpful to dilute and mask louder, harsher sounds with a more tolerable noise. These sounds are made to help you relax, which in turn helps you to fall asleep quickly. Check out your app store for apps that play soothing sounds to help drown out background sounds or sudden noises that could interrupt your sleep.

awake at night, there’s almost always a resolution. We've got plenty of good snoring solutions they can try. Check Silentnight’s Luxury Anti-Snore Pillow, and our tips on how to stop snoring. Or are you living with someone who grinds their teeth at night or sleep talks? Again, there are options to help prevent these night time habits and the best thing you can do is to communicate with the person dealing with these problems and address them together. It may even turn out they're not getting a great night’s sleep either.

You’re counting calories, not colours  Many people use diets with calorie or macro-based plans, which leaves them fixated on numbers, measurements and scales, without acknowledging their body’s need for nutrients, and their metabolism’s response. For example, your body will have a better metabolic result with a small cup of berries than with a cup of gummy bears. Diet staples like chicken and rice give your body some protein and carbs, however, generally, the less colour, the less nutrients. Some good nutrient-filled foods to include are dark leafy greens, colourful veggies, citrus, berries, avocado and raw nuts.

4. Break it down - when we have lots to do, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. When this happens, it can be useful to break down your tasks and plan how you will tackle a situation.

You’re not eating enough fat  Diets that severely limit fat can replace those calories with carbohydrates, which means your blood sugar levels are irregular – your body will constantly try to balance your insulin and blood sugar levels, which can impact your cortisol (stress hormone) production. Cortisol notifies your body to store body fat, rather than burn it, and can lead to an increased intake of high-carbohydrate foods. Dietary fat can help keep energy and hunger levels more even. Aim to have healthy fats with each meal and reach for snacks with healthy fat or ones that are protein based. These include ingredients like olives, avocado, eggs and raw nuts.

You’re not paying attention to your meals  Research shows that practising mindfulness during meals can help reduce cortisol and abdominal fat. Remember to: chew your food fully, remove screens from your eating routine and remember that you don’t always have to finish your plate.

The concept of having a better diet is often at the forefront of people’s minds. However, with so many different types of diets, achieving your nutrition goals can be overwhelming. Nutrition expert Lauryn Lax from breakingmuscle.com outlines the main reasons why your diet isn’t working – and the solutions…

You’re too stressed about your diet  Stress is a factor resulting in stubborn body fat. Even if you don’t feel stressed, minor daily stressors can threaten metabolic balance. Your cortisol level needs to be balanced in order to shed body fat. Cortisol levels can become chronically high if you’re stressed long-term, and you can’t improve your body if your mind is stressed. Your gut isn’t healed   Underlying gut issues like bacterial overgrowth; imbalanced gut bacteria; chronic bloating/constipation; or low stomach acid can lead to nutrient deficiency and malabsorption issues. This means your body will fight against you, no matter how clean you eat or how much you work out. Many studies have proven that your gut is just as important as a healthy diet – one study suggested that those who focused on healing their gut lost an average of 11 pounds of body fat, whereas those who only focused on their diet lost three pounds.

You’re not including carbs  Carbs aren’t the enemy! When you don’t eat enough carbohydrates, especially from vegetables, you risk also eliminating fibre, which is essential for digestion, a healthy gut, and metabolic balance. Extreme diets at either end of the fat – carb spectrum can negatively impact your metabolism. So, which is better – low fat or low carb diets? There’s no correct answer! Everybody is different and some do better with more carbs, others with more fat.

5. Seek support - it’s okay to ask for help. It can help to share stressors with a friend or contact a mental health professional via your GP or another service such as Samaritans. tips on how to stay healthy visit

In the UK, food miles account for about a tenth of the total greenhouse gas emissions within the food system (other emissions come from producing and processing food). For example, research has revealed that produce such as out-of-season berries, account for around 11% of the UK’s food-transport emissions. But eating seasonally isn’t only a more environmentally friendly option. Seasonal produce is often at its nutritional best – the nutritional value of fruit and veg is at its highest just after they’ve been harvested. Plus, seasonal produce is brimming with flavour and is evidently fresher and of higher quality

According to the British Dietetic Association’s One Blue Dot report, which looks at eating patterns for health and environmental sustainability, consuming fruit and vegetables out of season has a higher impact on greenhouse gas emissions. As well as reducing our carbon footprint, eating produce grown closer to home means consumers can support local businesses and suppliers in the process.

Based on research by FortuneGames. com who interviewed 2,000 adults aged between 18-65 about their guilty snacking secrets.

New research reveals that one in six of us confess to regularly munching an entire pack of Pringles, while the same number say they regularly scoff an entire packet of biscuits with a cuppa. Q1: What first attracted you into becoming a founding member of BBN?

Changes we made: Chandra gave us a comprehensive report (which incidentally is a legal requirement that should be on personnel files), recommending that our laptop riser should be set at 5” from the desktop to help with posture and that we needed a separate wireless keyboard and mouse to help prevent RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury). Other factors such as the keyboard distance, wearing blue light glasses, using eye drops and taking short breaks every couple of hours were also recommended. Chandra advised us to get a new chair to provide better lumbar support – he even assembled and adjusted it for us!

It was the friendly people and the comfortable relaxed environment. The group needed someone to handle finances and I felt I wanted to be involved.

Beckenham Business Association’s sixth Beckenham Business Day takes place on Wednesday 2nd November from 10am-5pm and businesses throughout the Bromley borough are invited to join what will be a valuable and insightful day. DSE Assessment: A review

Q2: Did you envisage BBN becoming as successful as it is today? And why do you think this is?

The verdict: The good news was that we were given the thumbs up when it came to desk stability, lighting and ventilation, with everything within easy reach. However, there was cause for concern when it came to laptop height, keyboard distance and the chair we were using.

1 month later: It was tricky adjusting to using a separate keyboard at first, but we persevered and found that we were naturally becoming more mindful of our posture as we worked. A month down the line and the back pain has significantly improved and we’re taking regular breaks too, which also means we’re actually more productive – a win-win.

If your day job means spending hours in front of a screen, you might want to consider having a DSE (Display Screen Equipment) Assessment. We decided to try it out ourselves (our average screen time being 10+ hours a day) and chose local business, Elmcroft Business Services, to conduct the assessment….

Business

The DSE: Our trained assessor, Chandra Sharma, explained that he would determine what we were doing right and areas for improvement when it came to our working environment. We initially went through a questionnaire to determine any problem areas with how we work and our surroundings. We flagged up that we had a back problem and that we strained our neck whilst working as we were mostly using a laptop. Chandra then observed us as we worked, looking at things like seat position, posture, desk height, lighting, ventilation etc…

Q2: What’s your role - and some of your regular duties?

I own a bookkeeping business, Four Corners Bookkeeping, so I am usually keeping my clients happy by keeping their business’s bookkeeping up to date. I live and work in the heart of Bromley, have a husband and two teenage daughters (oh and a cat). In my spare time, I like gardening, running and I play netball.

I am the bookkeeper and one of the directors so I make sure the accounts are up straight and invoices are paid. Being a not-for-profit organisation any surplus of monies are put back into the group, with contributions to group social events, donations to our chosen charities and purchasing equipment we need to provide a hybrid meeting for those that wish to attend by Zoom.

When I met the group I had absolutely no doubt it would succeed – the team all bring something extra to the group. We have a fantastic group of members and we utilise those members’ skills as much as possible to ensure everybody can contribute to the smooth running of the meetings.

Q3: What makes a great networking event?

A diverse group of businesses and people, a relaxed friendly atmosphere and plenty of banter.

This is Meg and Difor. They love all the streams in the borough and have thrown themselves in most of them!

Dogs typically spend a short amount of time being up and active and before you know it they’re off snoozing somewhere around the house. Older dogs and new puppies can sleep even longer than the recommended 12-14 hours.

Rabbits tend to be light sleepers as they are prey animals, but it is believed that rabbits who are extremely comfortable in their environment will sleep longer. They also tend to sleep with their eyes open so it can be hard to determine whether they are awake or

Although hamsters need around 12 to 14 hours of sleep, these are usually broken up over short periods of time and they typically sleep during the day.

Snakes don’t have eyelids, instead they have a brille on each eye which is a transparent layer that protects their eye. Because snakes sleep with their eyes ‘open’, you may not actually realise that your pet snake sleeps for around 16 hours a day.

Parrots: 10-12 hours

Most pet parrots are used to living near the equator where there is around 12 hours of darkness each night - that’s why they’re used to this much sleep.

Dogs: 12-14 hours

Lola. She’s nearly two years old and is such a loving cat who loves nothing more than belly tickles and cuddles. She is also crazy and loves to sit on top of doors and climb into the smallest of spaces.

Cats need around 16-20 hours to avoid feeling tired and grumpy and just like dogs, younger and older cats need more sleep. Cats are pretty flexible sleepers and you may find they’re more active at early and late hours as these are the best time to hunt.

Hamsters: 12-14 hours

This is Acer but we call him Booboos or Baby Boy. We got him and his brother Alfie when they were just five weeks old. They were so tiny and unfortunately we lost Alfie. This cat is the most loving boy - he follows me to school and to the shops. He would be on my shoulder all day if he could. The love I have for this one is unbelievable!

As well as the pet version, a new home version has also been launched.

This is Poppy. She is a rescue dog and we’ve had her for just over a year. She has come a long way considering she was going to be put down because she bit the dog catcher. Because she was puppy-farmed she loves puppies or young dogs but is nervous of older dogs and has been attacked twice. Regardless, she is such a funny, intelligent character who is full of love and will do anything for a treat. Many dog walkers have noticed how well behaved she has become and how much progress she has made, which makes us very proud fur baby parents.

This is Toby enjoying his walk in Sparrows Den. He is the most loving dog I’ve ever known. He always just wants to be with people and just loves giving kisses. He had two homes previously before he joined our family and is going to be ten this year. As you can see, he loves a smile.

the shower was nice and powerful. As you would expect from Eurocamp, everything was pristine when we arrived. There was also a large outdoor decked area and a gas BBQ. Our overall impression (and this might be rose-tinted spectacles time) is that although there was more to this new cabin, it seemed to have less space than the one that we had at Domaine des Ormes.

La Vallée in Houlgate, Normandy seemed like a good compromise in terms of distance from home and its location in the Baie de la Seine, which is both picturesque and near loads of points of interest (more of that later). The camp itself is about a two-minute drive and 15 minute walk from Houlgate, a lovely little gem of a seaside town with scenic little streets and a bustling centre. La Vallée, set on rolling hills, afforded wonderful views of the sea and offered a fresh breeze in the baking sun.

The teens were impressed. Eurocamp made it easy for the kids to make friends with ice-breaking club activities and the park had a wide range of activities. The site wasn’t quite the rural idyll of Domaine des Ormes (a much bigger site in the Breton countryside) but that was OK. Socialising as a teen does seem to involve a lot more sitting down than climbing up.

What’s on?

Where to visit?

We stayed in an Azure Plus with three bedrooms (one double, one twin and one bunk). The kitchen had all mod cons including a dishwasher and coffee machine and

All Eurocamps have a dedicated animation (entertainment) team for children at different ages. Even our two jaded teens were catered for and the introductory session on the Sunday ensured that ice was broken and there was little resistance to joining in. The list of amenities is long with obligatory pools (both inside and out), waterslides (watch your head on the second turn on the red slide) and a whole slew of others. Some of the listed activities were not available when we were there (Scuba diving lessons) and the WiFi wasn’t free either – something that Eurocamp had changed since our 2014 visit.

How to get there

The verdict?

With both an A-level and a GCSE historian in the car, Normandy’s long relationship with the Auld Enemy across the Channel (ie. Us) provided some fantastic field trips; a little under an hour’s drive is Bayeux, site of the famous tapestry (whisper - it’s an embroidery not a tapestry); a little over an hour’s drive gets you to Omaha Beach and, right next door, the very moving American War Cemetery. Notable mentions go also to the gun batteries at Longues sur Mer and the artificial harbour at Arromanches-LesBains. You will need three to four hours to adequately visit the excellent Memorial de Caen which is around half an hour from Houlgate. And if you want to see how the jetset once holidayed then there is the fancy, upscale seaside resort of Deauville with its beaches so huge that they almost need public transport to get to the water.

Back in 2014, we had a family break at a Eurocamp in Brittany (Domaine des Ormes) that still sticks in our minds; the kind of holiday you remember as kids of climbing trees, scraped knees and staying out till it was dark. It seemed such an antidote to the screen-staring that would become the default position for our teenagers in 2022. Then they were six and nine but now 14 and 17…would the camp still hold the same

The nearest port is Caen, which is around a half an hour’s drive, but we opted for the Dover-Calais crossing which meant less driving in England and a shorter crossing but around three hours driving when we arrived. As we elected to take the toll roads (allow around 30 Euros in tolls if you follow the same route), the motorways were near empty and smooth as glass. We also decided to break up the trip by stopping off at Honfleur with its stunning old port (definitely worth a visit).

At this stage Maggie was too exhausted to fight. From the lack of sleep and fear. Maggie did as she was told. Maggie sat up, reached her medication, and took hold of her drink. Maggie opened her mouth wide and tipped a few of the pills into her mouth and swallowed her drink. Maggie lay back down just staring at the visitor’s wicked grin on its face. Slumber took hold of her. Never able to open them again.

Maggie felt hot, sweaty, and irritated. Maggie could hear the beat of own heart in her ear drums. Maggie’s forehead was on fire. Maggie could feel something. Maggie could feel she had a visitor. Yet it was so cold. With every exhale Maggie could see her own breath with her naked eye. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up. Maggie was not alone.

THE VISITOR

The eerie feeling began soon after his passing. Just as the last autumn leaf danced its way to the winter floor. Every evening at the same hour - at the exact hour that John had gone to sleep - the armchair in the back bedroom would begin to move back and forth. The rocking motion was gentle at first. However, as time passed the rocking soon became more and more aggressive. Maggie believed that this was a way for John to say that the visitor is arriving

Maggie’s children were fully grown. And her husband, John, was now deceased. John, God bless his soul, had passed away in their home. Although it was just her now, Maggie could always feel eyes on her. Maggie had always prayed that the eyes that lurked in the shadows were not menacing.

last few nights, the visitor had been standing and watching her sleep. Just standing in the threshold of the door frame. Grinning like the cat who got the cream. Just standing there. Maggie could not remember the last time she slept. Maggie was too scared to close her eyes. She feared she may not open them again.

Short Story

John had been a kind, supportive and a friendly gentleman. John had always provided everything they had needed in a gentle manner. John had been feeling frail and poorly leading up to his passing. But John never complained. Any time his illness did become too much he would just dismiss himself and go to sleep, praying that when he awoke, he would feel better.

Maggie was exhausted. Maggie was so exhausted that she did not move. Maggie must have closed her eyes. For there lying in front of her was the visitor. Staring at her with the same grin on its face as always. One of its long fingers played with the mat that was her hair. Twisting it around and around its long fingers. Just twisting and twisting. The visitor pointed its other finger at Maggie’s side table. Resting on her side table was her medication. The same medication that she had used on John. To help send John into a neverending sleep. Maggie had been waiting for this. Maggie’s ending was going to be the same as John’s. Maggie had done it out of the kindness of her heart. To ease John’s suffering. Why should she be punished for her kindness? Maggie had only added a few to his meal, a few to his favourite warm beverage in the evening. John would never have known.

On the eve of John’s death, he dismissed himself to go to sleep in his armchair claiming he would feel better in the morning. John closed his eyes never to open them again. John passed away in his favourite armchair in the second

bedroom. Which sat in front of the window. After his passing there was always a shadow there. At the same time at the same place. The shadow was always there.

He and his friend, Ryan Nicodemus decided to pursue a minimalist lifestyle. They left their jobs, gave away nearly everything they owned, and moved into smaller homes.

Being a minimalist isn’t just about throwing out your physical possessions – it’s about minimising your todo list, becoming clear about your priorities and really understanding who you are and what you want out of life. It’s the process of decluttering your mind.

A big clue came when I saw Bob Marley being interviewed on TV, and the reporter asked him, “Are you a rich man?”

It's taken me almost half a century to understand what Bob Marley worked out much earlier in life. True happiness comes from friendship and love, experiences and passions. Stuff the stuff.

One of the makers of this documentary, Joshua Millburn, then an Operations Director of a telecommunications company said, "I was spending so much time working to buy stuff I didn't need….But it took getting everything I ever wanted to realise I wasn't happy."

46 Life in... BROMLEY October 2022 lifeinmagazines.co.uk community

We only live once. When you die, you will leave the world with nothing. Why are we all so obsessed with accumulating wealth? For what purpose? I’m not at my happiest making money to buy another car I definitely don’t need. I’m at my happiest when I’m laughing with family or friends, doing something creative, sharing quality time with a loved one, laying in the sunshine, riding my bike, reading a book. None of these things need an accumulation of wealth.

my 49 years, I’ve been on that treadmill; working hard, seeking promotion to earn more money to buy nicer things. And guess what, I’ve done it. I’ve bought the Porsches, the bachelor pad, the 75” TV’s, the fancy bikes, and all the latest gadgets I can get my hands on.

In my 20’s I was always buying things in the naïve belief that this would bring me happiness. For a short time it did, but eventually the same thing always happened; I wanted a more expensive car, a bigger house and so on.

I haven’t done it yet, but my next step is to leave my job, to pursue my own passions instead of working for money. And I will do it.

Like everybody else, I have been conditioned in life to pursue money. We are taught that if we study hard we will have illustrious careers, so that we can earn well and be happy.

The pursuit of happiness

They decided to pursue their passions rather than stay in a job, which they only did for money, and they only kept possessions which brough them true joy.

With all the evidence staring me in the face, I too have begun my own decluttering journey. I think it subconsciously started a while back. I used to queue up for the latest iPhone every year. My phone is now 3 years old, it works just fine. I would buy a new car every 2 years. My current car is 6 years old.

But now I’m on a mission. Recently I’ve given away all my CDs, DVDs and clothes I haven’t worn for years. And do you know what, as my flat became emptier, my mind became more peaceful.

The belief that money equals happiness is reinforced by advertising, along with all forms of media. We are constantly bombarded with the message that if we have a bigger house, a better car, and simply more ‘stuff’, we will be Forhappier.mostof

Their idea was to search for happiness not through things, but through life itself; taking pleasure in friendship, love, experiences, travel, working for passion, and making others happy. They realised that the best things in life really are free.

Am I happier than when I was in my 20’s, delivering pizzas for a living? No way, I’m more miserable. How can that be when I’m surrounded by all this amazing stuff? My social life is still good, if not better. So why am I more downbeat?

Bob Marley has another famous quote - Money is numbers and numbers never end. If it takes money to be happy, your search for happiness will never end.

“When you say rich, what do you mean?” replied Marley. “Do you have a lot of possessions? Money in the bank?” asked the “Possessionsreporter.make you rich?” said Marley. “I don’t have that type of richness. My richness is life, forever.”

It's taken me almost half a century to understand what Bob Marley worked out much earlier in life.
