COME ON EILEEN!

New brand & website from Your Bromley

Multi-award winning actress Dame Eileen Atkins CBE DBE, most recently known for her roles in Doc Martin, The Crown and Nothing Like A Dame, appeared on stage at the Bromley Little Theatre after a hiatus of 61 years. Dame Eileen said, "I can honestly say that Bromley gave me my first big break." Dame Eileen delighted the crowd with accounts of her life in theatre, film and television spanning from her dancing shows at the age of six up until the present day. Her stories included amusing accounts involving Sir Laurence Olivier (Larry), Jude Law and many other well-known industry names. The event was a fundraising event for the Bromley Little Theatre's ambitious redevelopment programme and Dame Eileen kindly gave her time at no cost to the theatre. There are further fundraising events in the planning stage, which are in addition to the 11 plays on the Main Stage and four Bar shows at this well-loved local theatre. Your Bromley, the Business Improvement District (BID) for Bromley town centre has revealed its new branding and website, developed to help capture the essence of the town. It has been designed to help make Bromley a destination of choice for those who live in and around the borough, work in the town or come to visit for leisure and recreation. The initial research, carried out amongst businesses and the public, revealed that Bromley is loved for its green spaces, its excellent connections, its shopping and attractions such as the Churchill Theatre. These findings were used to develop initial design work that was taken to workshops with businesses and members of the public for their discussion and input. The culmination of this workis a new brand that reflects all of this feedback.

It’s green, friendly and welcoming, filled with imagery of real people from the town.

Parlour party

We were invited to the Mayor’s Parlour at the Civic Centre in Bromley to meet with The Mayor of Bromley, Cllr Russell L. Mellor, the first citizen of the borough who chairs Council Meetings and represents the Queen. We also met with the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Tony Owen. Both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor represent the borough across a range of events – from one-off celebrations, to launch events and at community fairs and fetes. Both the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor have regularly contributed to Life In Magazines with their own dedicated columns and, as their Mayoralty concludes at the end of this month, we would like to thank them both for their valued efforts. Speaking about the highlights of their Mayoralty, the Mayor, Cllr Russell Mellor, said: “As far as the last year has gone, I’ve enjoyed it enormously, particularly seeing young children receive awards and encouragement for their contribution to the community and their achievements. I’ve also been amazed at the number of people that take on so many different roles within the community.” The Deputy Mayor, Cllr Owen, said: “The Deputy Mayoress enjoyed Eagle Heights in Eynsford and meeting the meerkats. You can go for a walk with an alpaca and also take a husky sled ride.”

BOOK REVIEW

Samantha Nemeth read Adventures At Home by Zoë Lake, published by Pimpernel Press, £20 STAR RATING:

SYNOPSIS: Zoë Lake shows how to bring entertainment and excitement into our lives with simple to follow, inspiring ideas for spending quality time with our families, making fun and memorable days, and all in the comfort of our own homes.

SAMANTHA SAYS…”Adventures At Home is a useful book with lots of ideas of how to create special memories with your children that don’t cost a fortune and can be done at home with little or no preparation. Definitely aimed at younger children, my teenagers would roll their eyes very hard if I suggested many of these activities. “It is beautifully presented with lots of lovely, clear photos that speak of an idyllic summer that we all yearn for. The information is clearly set out and easy to digest. It is a good companion to keep close by for those days that the kids are bored and driving you mad. “However, it does assume its audience has access to a garden and lots of crafting supplies that may not be the reality. If you take nothing else away, take this. Your imagination is boundless, and this book may just be the nudge you need to use it more.

Mayor of Bromley Awards 2022

Five residents from across the borough have been recognised in this year’s Mayor of Bromley Awards ceremony, which has taken place annually for the past 30 years.

Many Bromley residents who have performed outstanding voluntary service have been nominated to receive the Mayor’s Award. The awards range from charity work to improving the environment to supporting the community, and so much more. Councillor Russell L. Mellor said, “As a token of gratitude, Bromley Council has always been honoured to award the borough’s wonderful volunteers. I was delighted to continue the tradition and acknowledge the contribution made by the volunteers by presenting them with these awards. All of the nominees are doing amazing things in our borough, but these five are particularly special.” The five award winners were Bromley GP Dr Yohannes Bahru, who was awarded for his service and dedication to supporting ‘hard to reach’ community groups and staff in Bromley who have had genuine concerns regarding COVID-19, contributing to the success of the vaccination programme. Diane Hatch was awarded for her contributions to the Mind charity in Bromley, Lewisham, and Greenwich by raising funds through her organising a charity Christmas Carol Service at Christ Church in Petts Wood. Walter Leonard, founder of the ‘Friends of Betts Park’ in 2020, was awarded for his service leading the rejuvenation of the park and his additional service as the Chairman of the Crystal Palace Safer Neighbourhood Board. Holly Rattenbury was awarded for her voluntary service at Hoblingwell Recreation Ground, assisting with park clubs and coaching local children in sports and fitness activities. Alan Woolston was awarded for his involvement in a number of charities over the past two decades, including his self-established ‘Beyond Business’ programme for social entrepreneurs which has launched over 55 socially focused businesses. A huge thank you to Buller's Wood School for Girls for catering for this event as part of their school curriculum. The awards were presented in person by the Mayor at the Civic Centre on the evening of Tuesday evening 1 March. Dr Bahru was unfortunately unable to attend the ceremony and his award was accepted on his behalf by Dr Ade Fowler.
