don’t think I’m the only one who feels the end of 2022 has come round so quickly this year, but it’s always an exciting time of the year as far as I’m concerned – a chance to spend quality time with family, reflect on what has happened over the last 12 months and make plans and goals for the new year. As I write this, I’m sitting on the 8th deck of MSC Seaview somewhere in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. It was the holiday I was supposed to take in 2019 to celebrate the end of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, but Covid came along to scupper those plans. And now here I am – full of gratitude that I’m able to enjoy the cruise I’ve always longed to experience. And I can vouch that time away from day-to-day life works wonders for one’s physical health and mental wellbeing. And while I mention my own treatment, can I please remind those reading this to take measures to check themselves. Early detection saves lives and the NHS can do amazing things these days, so please don’t delay in seeing your GP if you’re concerned of any lumps or bumps you feel shouldn’t be there.

Until January, all of us at Life In…Magazines wish you a very happy, healthy and peaceful Christmas.

PS Don’t forget you can nominate a Local Hero or tell us about a Random Act of Community Kindness – we love sharing your uplifting stories.

Random Acts of Kindness

(because it’s not all bad out there)

I volunteer at Bromley Hygiene Bank and had popped out to Lidl to get some supplies to hand out to our school partners. As I was loading the toothpastes, toothbrushes, shower gels and anti-perspirants on the conveyor belt, the lady behind me guessed that I was making care packages and asked me about what we do. After I had explained, I couldn’t believe it when she offered to pay for my shopping. She said that she had received some good news about her family and wanted to spread the joy. I felt so blessed that day, especially as it wasn’t a cheap shop. The lady wanted to remain anonymous, but if she’s reading this, I just want to thank her for the kind gesture and to let her know that she helped spread the joy to many that day.

History

Christmas in the Workhouse

‘Please Sir, I want some more.’ Who amongst us doesn’t recognise these words when Oliver Twist, an orphan, drew the short straw to ask for more food? Although this story by Charles Dickens was not set at Christmas, it illustrates one of the horrors of the workhousehunger.

Poverty had always been a problem. It was generally believed that poverty was the fault of the poor because they were lazy and feckless. With the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII, the main source of welfare and charity disappeared. Following a series of poor harvests leading to famine conditions the 1601 Poor Law Act was introduced, giving the parish responsibility to make provision for the poor – mainly the elderly, widows with children and orphans.

A new Poor Law was enacted in 1834. It was welcomed by some who believed that it would reduce the cost of caring for the poor, take beggars off the streets and encourage the poor to work hard to support themselves. Parishes worked together in Unions to provide workhouses as a last resort for the poor; it was thought that the inmates should not have more than hard working poor labourers. The Bromley Union Workhouse was built on the site where the Princess Royal Union Hospital (PRUH) now stands. (The chapel is the last remnant of it). In 1903 George Sims wrote the poem, Christmas Day in the Workhouse, which showed the callousness of the people in charge.

These workhouses were terrifying: families were split up; men to one side, women to another and children housed separately, as were people with mental disabilities. Food was kept to the minimum – watery gruel the main ingredient. Some days they were given nothing. Back-breaking work was kept to the maximum from 4am to 10pm on

meaningless chores such as ‘picking oakum’ or breaking stones. There was no respite for Christmas in those early days.

In 1840 Queen Victoria married Prince Albert, a German. In Germany it was the tradition at Christmas-time to cut and decorate fir trees – the Christmas tree. Prince Albert introduced the Christmas tree to the Royal Family and gradually new Christmas traditions were added. Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in which he describes the happy family Christmas of Scrooge’s nephew and of the poor family Christmas of Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s clerk. Here we see some of the new Christmas traditions including the eating of the traditional turkey. By the early 20th century conditions were beginning to improve for workhouse inmates; a few die-hards such as George W. Norman of Bromley believed that the lazy vagrants should not be awarded free meals (even at Christmas).

The records of the Bromley Union Workhouse show some of the improvements:

In 1864 the Board had granted permission to one lady to hang up a few colour prints and set up a Christmas tree ‘where the old people live’ and ‘a little present to each of the boys and girls’.

By 1870 the Union agreed to accept a donation of 45 volumes of books for the use of the inmates. At Christmas 1889 the matron gave the inmates extra rations of roast and plum pudding.

A year later, a visiting journalist reported on the Christmas celebration that while ‘it may not at first sight appear the happiest of places to suggest for spending a pleasant evening, yet the modern well-managed workhouse of the present day, as typified by the Bromley Union Workhouse, is not by any means an uncomfortable place. All inmates were given extra food, drink and were allowed to celebrate by singing songs.’

By 1928 the workhouse was effectively a hospital, but not until 1936 did it become known as Farnborough County Hospital. The new Poor Law was finally abolished in 1948 and the PRUH finally opened in April, 2003.

Planning consultation

Bromley Council has launched a Bromley town centre planning consultation to seek businesses and residents’ views on guidance for future development in the town centre.

The 12-week consultation seeks views on a draft Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) for Bromley town centre, which once adopted will be considered when determining future planning applications in the area, supporting existing planning policy set out in the Local Plan and the London Plan. This news follows previous consultation in the summer of 2020 which received over 800 representations made about the future of Bromley town centre and what the proposed SPD should focus on. This new guidance is designed to protect and enhance the vibrancy and character of the town centre to enable it to adapt and thrive for years to come.

The consultation is open until 27th January, 2023 and you can submit your views at: supplementary-planning-guidancebromley.gov.uk/planning-policy/

The Princess Royal University Hospital is the main hospital for the Bromley area. The PRUH, as the hospital is known, is part of the King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The Friends of the PRUH aims to improve the lives of patients and staff in the hospital. It is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers and raises funds to support its aims. Recently the NHS Trust invested a large sum of money on refurbishing Medical Wards 1 and 2 at the PRUH to help make them demen tia-friendly. The changes, aimed at reducing confusion and distress for patients, included the use of bold and contrasting colours, non-slip flooring and artwork. The Friends contributed a substantial sum of £15,000 per ward towards the refurbishment and recently donated 22 activity boxes and CD players for patients. In addition, during the pandemic, The Friends supported staff by donating meals, snacks, fresh fruit, chocolates, hand creams, body lotion and small tokens of ap preciation. The Friends fund their work by various means. As well as receiving legacies and regular donations from individuals and organisations, such as local Rotary Clubs, they usually raise money by holding various fund-raising activities including sales stalls, charity events and the sale of Christmas cards.

Pond pals

A refreshing addition

A team of volunteers from Perrys Chartered Accountants has helped to dig a new pond for community charity, Communigrow.

The charity teaches people the benefits of growing local, fresh and affordable produce in an organic and sustainable way. It also organises regular workshops and educational sessions to help schools, groups and volunteers to gain practical experience of growing produce and supporting the environment. Steve Hale, Victoria Pearson, Katherine Cheung, Ioannis Sklavenitis, Jamie Barden and Emma Palmer spent a day at the charity’s site in East Malling to help remove soil and dig the foundations for the pond, which will be part of Communigrow’s new sensory garden. Once completed, the pond will be used as a sensory area, and to teach children about the importance of water for sustaining natural habitats.

SUPPORTING LOCAL AUTHORS…

Bromley-based design and communications agency, RONIN Marketing, has announced its sponsorship of Bromley Football Club’s new sustainability programme. The company has provided a fresh, bold design for the reusable Green Goblet, eco-friendly cups which are now being used at the National League club’s Broomfield’s Bar and Kitchen and Bear Island Bar. MD, Steve Lipscombe (pictured), said: “We have always opted to support Bromley FC’s youth and community activities, so we not only contribute to the club itself but also help promote the opportunities it provides for the local area. This new sponsorship fits in very well with that." The new cups provide an environmentally-friendly solution for all events held at the stadium as well as match days. Completely sustainable, they reduce the amount of single use plastic being sent to landfill while lowering our carbon footprint.

Q: What’s the title of your book and when was it published? My book The Breakup Monologues was published by Bloomsbury’s wellbeing imprint Green Tree in 2021. It is based on my podcast and follows my trilogy of live shows investigating the psychology of love.

Q: How did you come to writing a book and what was your experience of writing it? I wrote it during the lockdown in 2020 after successfully pitching to an agent. It was comforting to have something to focus on at that time.

5 Minutes With…

Darren Weale

In August last year, Darren Weale, along with co-presenter Zeenat Noorani and Sarah Marsh-Collings, set up the Bromley Buzz – a podcast covering upbeat news and views from across the borough. We caught up with Darren to find out where he finds his inspiration – and how he manages to juggle a full-time job with what he describes as ‘a personal passion’….

Q: First things first Darren, why the Bromley Buzz podcast – and why now?

We realised that there was a real need for good news and stories to be shared across Bromley. When we started the podcast, Life In Orpington magazine was one of the few decent media channels in the borough. And you’ve added Life In Bromley magazine since, too. I remember you announcing it in episode 4!

Q: Who has been your favourite guest so far –and why?

Johannes Radebe from Strictly Come Dancing (thank you, Churchill Theatre!). Just the loveliest man.

Q: What sort of subjects and topics do you discuss? And who would you like to get on the podcast?

We’ve been called ‘relentlessly positive’ by Gareth Bacon, Orpington’s MP. So, anything and anyone in the borough that can bring a smile to people’s faces. Our top target was Anton Du Beke, now a Strictly judge, who once worked in The Bed Post in Petts Wood. We interviewed him recently, so now maybe comedian Rob Beckett?

Q: Where does your inspiration come from in terms of topics to discuss and people to invite?

Research, especially at the moment around David Bowie, Bromley’s biggest cultural icon. Lots of friendly contacts, Life In magazines, News Shopper, the South London Press, hearsay and gossip. We want to celebrate people of all ages and backgrounds and every bit of diversity, and we’ve interviewed six years olds and upwards, had LGBTQ+ guests, two Mayors, and four MP’s. One guest, Peter Fortune, London Assembly Member for Bexley and Bromley, a former actor, played Romeo to Zeenat’s Juliet on one show! She swooned on air!

Q: You also have your own PR business, are a member of the BNI, involved in the Rotary (and goodness knows what else) – how do you manage to juggle it all? With difficulty. Even so, the Buzz goes out every week, usually on Thursdays. It keeps growing, too. We’re on multiple channels, and we have our website and blog at www.bromleybuzz.uk, plus Instagram, LinkedIn, You Tube, Facebook and Twitter. We clocked up over 70 episodes and 100 interviews in our first year alone.

Q: How is the Bromley Buzz funded – and how can people get involved or sponsor it? We’ve had one donation to date! Thank you, Fairlight Group. But the hours our team of four – myself, Mental Wellbeing and Mindset Coach Zeenat, Digital Marketing expert Sarah Marsh-Collings, and Graphic Designer Tim Dawson – have put in are way beyond any payment that has come in. We really, really love doing it. If you want to talk to us, email darren@intunepr.co.uk.

Q: What is the criteria for being invited to speak on the podcast? Story. If you have a good one, and it’s positive, we’re interested.

Q: Looking ahead, what are your plans for the Bromley Buzz and how do you envisage it growing? Sponsorship is an obvious one. We do now have packages available for that. We need to carry on being better known and we have been on BBC Radio London, BBC Radio Kent, the Business Bunker and Mindset Matters on Channel Radio, in the FSB magazine, and in Startups magazine’s blog. We’ll carry on being very visible, championing Bromley and the people in it. Future plans include events.

Q: How can people access the podcasts? Podbean – the simplest link - https://bromleybuzz. podbean.com, Spotify, Apple, Listen Notes, Tune In, Audible, and now Podchaser. All the links are on our website.

Q. Do you have a message for your listeners? Listen. Enjoy. Dip in. Share us. Say hello. Life is full of ‘downs’, help us to bring Bromley some ‘ups’! And thank you, too, to Lauretta and all at Life In magazines, you’ve helped us a lot from when we started. You Buzz too!

MAYOR’S VOICE community

Certain images are unbreakably attached to that time of the year when the clocks go back and the days get shorter; carved pumpkins grinning on doorsteps, skies illuminated with fireworks and bright red poppies worn to remember those who gave their lives in service of their country.

Much of the early weeks of my November were spent focussing on Remembrance Day. I joined the brilliant volunteers collecting for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, visited the newly updated memorials in West Wickham and Beckenham, and, of course, attended the Remembrance Day service. This is always a special Sunday for me as the Armed Forces have always played, and continue to play, an important part in the lives of those closest to me.

While Remembrance Day is focussed on never losing sight of the incredible sacrifices made by those in the past, there has also been much looking to the future over recent weeks. I thoroughly enjoyed getting on the mic

with the DJs at the launch of new local station, Bromley Radio, which was held at the home of our friends Bromley FC. I was also excited to be at the launch of the new Downton & Ali offices in the borough and the MyTime Active Team Bromley launch.

Bromley’s young people were also at the heart of my activities this month. I was delighted to be at the Churchill Theatre for an event celebrating the wonderful talent of Young People in Community Performing Arts, and those people who help them realise their potential. It was also fantastic to celebrate the success of Bromley’s Care Leavers at an event held at the Civic Centre.

I need to offer a massive thank you to the staff and owners of Copper Ceylon, the Force 10 Big Band, the team at Oakley House and everyone who contributed to making my fundraising meal in aid of Ukraine and ball in aid of my charities – Everybreath and our Care Leaver’s Come Dine With Me Project – a fantastic success. These were both wonderful evenings enjoyed by all but could not have been so without the diligence and enthusiasm of entire teams that made them possible.

My mind, like many or yours I would imagine, now turns to the festive season. Christmas lights are already bringing multicoloured joy to the streets and the shops are full of tempting seasonal treats. So, until my next column in 2023, let me wish you a very Merry Christmas and an exceptionally Happy New Year.

Cllr Hannah Gray Mayor of Bromley (2022-23)

Lines from Linda

OMG! It’s nearly 2023. But first it’s Christmas. I have to say preparations for Xmas get earlier each year. This year I saw a Christmas pudding for sale in August. That would have pleased me a few years ago, as I had to shop before pantomime rehearsals started in November. Over the years, I have done many different pantos and played a variety of characters, from all the Principal Girls, the Princesses and Cinderella. More recently I played fairies. I loved playing fairies as, often as not, I got to fly across the stage and sometimes out into the audience. It was exhilarating. I remember flying in my dreams when I was younger, and then actually doing it, with the help of wires and a handler, was such a thrill. Except, when things go wrong. The worst, most embarrassing and memorable moment, when flying, was in a theatre not far from here. (Maybe you witnessed it!). To fly, one must be harnessed up before the show starts and wear large skin- coloured knickers. On this occasion, I had rushed in late, no time to change my knickers, just enough for my handler to harness me up and check me for safety. All went well. I flew out for my entrance, no problem. Same for my next entrance. However, on the entrance leading up to the interval, things went a little haywire. My flyer, who moves me about, like a puppet, from the side of the stage, accidentally pulled me back too hard and the back of my wire jolted and stuck on the song-sheet wires, (these were secured high in the

All I could do was wave my wand in time with the music and pray I wouldn’t tinkle for real as the giggling was infectious.

ceiling of the stage). However, I was supposed to have left the stage, but now firmly hinged to the song-sheet, I was stuck. My handler couldn’t un- hinge me. As I swung back and forth my whole body turned upside down, so my twinkling and sparkly fairy dress, was hanging over my head, leaving my bottom, which instead of the uniform flesh-coloured knickers was clad in bright pink and mauve roses, (and should probably have been a size bigger), facing the audience. There I hung as the orchestra started, and our star name marched on followed by the dancing babes singing ‘We Will Overcome’, which was the big number that closed the first half of the show. She stopped singing when she saw me, as her and the babes, tried, and failed, to control their giggling. All I could do was wave my wand in time with the music and pray I wouldn’t tinkle for real as the giggling was infectious. The curtains closed, and although I was dizzy from being the wrong way up, instead of sympathy all I got was a rollocking from the producer for wearing the wrong knickers.

A very Happy Christmas everyone. I’m on my way to book my panto tickets. I love a panto at Christmas. Always such fun.

NEW GRANT BOOSTS TREE SEED PRODUCTION

Domestic tree seed production is to be ramped up with new Government funding announced recently. The £1.2m Seed Sourcing Grant will boost domestic tree seed production, create green jobs, help meet the increased demand for trees and achieve our ambitious net zero targets. The grant is designed to enhance the quantity, quality and diversity of tree seed sources in England. Most tree seed planted in the UK is of British origin, but evidence suggests

that British seed sources may struggle to meet future demand across all species and there are known to be global shortages of tree seed.

The grant also aims to improve the diversity of England’s seed supply, for example by increasing the range of species and provenances available. This will be crucial for creating diverse and resilient woodlands, which are better able to adapt to future climate conditions as well as emerging pests and diseases.

3 TIPS TO LOWERING VAMPIRE ENERGY

Mark Sait, CEO and Founder of sustainability and moneysaving consultancy – SaveMoneyCutCarbon (SMCC), says that one of the main contributors to high energy bills is leaving devices plugged in. He explains that while some homes can have up to 40 gadgets constantly draining power, some appliances use more energy when on standby than others. Game consoles are the worst energy vampires – leaving them on standby uses almost as much electricity as when you're playing. Research shows that game consoles are costing British households £231 million a year, while TVs and other entertainment appliances account for around 25% of an electricity bill. Here’s three tips you might not have thought of to help lower vampire energy…

1. Charge your phone in the evening, not overnight A phone charger that is plugged in at the wall is slowly draining power; therefore, if it's plugged in to charge every single night, it is likely adding additional costs to your energy bill. It's good to get into the habit of charging your devices for a couple of hours in the evenings rather than overnight and unplug your chargers afterwards.

2. Use a smart plug

Using smart plugs will provide you with more flexibility and control. For example, if you connect a games console or a TV to a smart plug, you can ensure it's turned off by using your phone – you'll never have to squeeze behind furniture and a mountain of cables just to turn off the switches. You also remove the anxiety of thinking “did I turn the TV off?” when going on holiday by one click on your phone.

3. Check how energy efficient your fridge freezer is It’s worth checking how energy efficient your fridge freezer is – and if it’s an older model, consider replacing it with a C or higher model. The older it is, the more likely that it is not running at optimum efficiency so will be using more electricity than necessary.

SaveMoneyCutCarbon, has newly launched its industry-first home app, SaveMoneyCutCarbon Home. The Android and iOS solution provides a personalised view of exactly which products in your home are using the most energy, water and single-use plastic, and subsequently suggests swaps for eco-friendly alternatives.

pull-out-and-keep Xmas Special

- Your guide to a more sustainable Christmas!

In the last few years we’ve seen a massive shift towards becoming more sustainable when it comes to our daily living habits – and with good reason. As of 2013, the world’s population would need 1.7 Earths to support its demands on renewable natural resources, according to Global Footprint Network. In this special pull-out-and-keep supplement, we’ve rounded up some great ideas for enjoying a sustainable Christmas – without too much damage to your pockets – or the planet!

12 SUSTAINABLE THINGS TO DO THIS CHRISTMAS

1. Make your own sustainable Christmas decorations! You can use fruit like dried orange slice ornaments or make wreaths using materials like pinecones, ivy and holly which can be recycled. Etsy is a great place to look for more unique decorations or use a wreath making kit

2. Wrap gifts using recycled paper

3. Buy eco-friendly (and sustainable) Christmas crackers

4. Go meat free for your Christmas feast by opting for a plant-based dinner

5. Cut food waste by making shopping lists beforehand and transform leftover food by creating new meals

6. For any leftover food that might go to waste, donate it to your local food bank or soup kitchen

7. Try choosing organic and free-range options to help support small scale farming

8. Use LED lights on your Christmas tree to use less energy

9. Instead of buying an advent calendar, make your own using wood or fabric –and then add your own little gifts

10. Gifts are meant to be thoughtful, so why not make something homemade (Crimbo biscuits anyone?) or buy fairtrade or ethical gifts 11. Decide to go plastic free when it comes to buying gifts

12. Buy a potted tree to use year-round and not just at Christmas time or look into renting a Christmas tree instead

As we always encourage in this magazine, it’s important for us to support smaller, local businesses where possible. Here are six ideas on Christmas gifts from local businesses…

For photography entrepreneurs: The Phox Planner is a stunning 90-day success and productivity planner – the brainchild of local photographers, Kate and Jo. Even if you’re not a photographer, you’ll want one! It costs just £20 from phoxplanner.com

For flower fans: Nothing makes a house look more like home than gorgeous blooms that brighten a room. Both Time For Flowers (timeforflowerskent.co.uk) and Precious Flowers (preciousflowers.co.uk) can advise on what to buy and they deliver across the borough.

For the business owner: If you’re a local business you’ll understand how important it is to be on social media. Helen Manchip from BR6Life and The Social Surgery has launched ‘365 days of social media prompts’ – a pack of cards for just £22 that will give you a plethora of ideas on what to post – you’ll wonder how you managed without it! See thesocialsurgery.co.uk/shop

For sleeping beauties: We all know how important it is to get decent sleep, but it’s not just the mattress that has to work hard to support sleeping beauties – your pillow is also crucial for support. The Bed Post has a huge range – from gel and contour options to back pillows and everything in between. See the-bedpost.co.uk

For fitness fans: Pay for a friend or family member to get fit! Flin’s Fitness runs a huge range of classes – both in person and online to suit all tastes (flinsfitness.co.uk) or try Sam Dance Fit if they prefer putting on their dancing shoes (samdancefit.co.uk)

For foodies! We’ve got some great restaurants in the borough, so why not treat a loved one to something a bit different. Make them a token to take them out for a bite to eat. Try Xenia Japanese Restaurant and Bar (xenialoungebar.com) or The Bank Turkish Restaurant which features live music (thebankrestaurant.com)

For kids (or retro lovers)…Netflix and Fever’s new immersive experience, Stranger Things: The Experience is on now at Troubadour Brent Cross Studios at Brent Cross Town in north west London. For gym-goers…Bag some activewear from new sustainable British activewear client, Universal Performance, where all the company’s activewear is made of at least 95% recycled materials. Make your Christmas greener pull-out-and-keep

Christmas Tree: An artificial Christmas tree needs to be used for approximately 10 years for its environmental impact to be lower than a real tree. Better still, have you considered purchasing a potted tree and then you can plant it outside after the festive season? This enables you to do your bit for the environment and reuse the tree again next year. It could last a lifetime!

Christmas Eve Box: Invest in a reusable Christmas Eve box that can be used for many years to come, perhaps even becoming a family heirloom! You could get creative and make your own reusable box and items to fill it with, you could even make your pet one too.

Gifts: Buy a gift with a difference this year. It could be something like a reusable coffee cup, reusable makeup remover wipes or a solid shampoo bar. This will encourage a positive behaviour change which will lead to a more sustainable lifestyle. You could even gift a membership to a charity or wildlife trust, helping to support vital environmental work.

Wrapping: Use recyclable wrapping paper where possible. If it’s got foil or glitter on it then it can’t be recycled and could contain plastic. Or how about getting creative and using potato stamps to decorate parcel paper and adding a sprig of holly for that Christmas feel?

Cards & Decorations: If possible, buy cards printed on FSC-certified, recycled card. Even better go for the personal touch and make your own from recycled card. With decorations, avoid using single use decorations and opt to make your own. You could use natural resources like pinecones, which you can decorate or make your own natural star using twigs for the top of your tree. A great eco-friendly Christmas decoration for years to come. A homemade decoration that could be given as a gift or can be used as a festive decoration for years to come.

Christmas Dinner: When it comes to cooking Christmas dinner and other festive treats, there are some simple yet important ways we can protect the environment. Try and buy as many items as possible from local suppliers, such as your meat, fruit and veg. Dairy products are 1 of the most harmful items poured down the kitchen sink to the environment. It requires a large amount of oxygen to break down, meaning less oxygen in the water for wildlife. This is why pouring milk down the drain is a criminal offence for businesses. Do not be tempted to tip your leftover dessert custard, creams and yoghurts down the sink. Instead, be conscious of overbuying dairy products. If you do have dairy leftovers recycle it in your food waste bin. Most councils recycling food waste will accept dairy products as part of their collections and this tends to go to facilities that can generate energy from waste so the throw away produce is going to good use.

Christmas Wreath: Wreaths are a beautiful Christmas decoration, but some are more eco-friendly than others. Avoid wreaths adorned with plastic accessories and glittery decorations. Not only are these made using non sustainable materials, but they can be harmful for birds

and wildlife if hung outside. Go for a real, fresh wreath made using seasonal, natural foliage and adornments. Even better, make your own out of either fabric that will last year after year or natural resources from your own garden such as leaves and pinecones.

Christmas Crackers: Unfortunately, most Christmas crackers are often laden with glitter, making them unrecyclable. They are also filled with plastic toys and gifts that are thrown away once the last mouthful of Christmas dinner has been eaten. Why not make unique Christmas crackers without the environmental cost. Use FSC-certified, recycled paper and check it can be recycled after use. Use recyclable paper ties to tie them. Each cracker could contain a recyclable paper hat and joke and either a wooden Christmas tree decoration or a chocolate in a compostable wrapper. You could reuse a shoe box or something similar to put them in. If not, there are Christmas crackers available to purchase that use FSC-certified, recycled paper and the items inside are sustainable too.

Christmas walk: Instead of a Christmas drive or just dropping down in front of the TV why not go out for a Christmas walk?

Being in a green space has been shown to be good for your physical and mental health. What has become even more apparent especially during the pandemic is the enormous benefit people get from seeking solace in nature. We can look after ourselves by getting outdoors more, but we need to look after nature too. Make sure you follow the Countryside Code which tells you how to get out and enjoy green spaces while respecting wildlife and other people.

Glitz and glam: Did you know that cosmetic and sanitary wipes contribute to 93 per cent of sewer blockages in the United Kingdom?

Even when they do not contain plastic, the majority of these wipes do not break down due to the non-woven material they are made of. This prevents them from breaking apart when cleaning surfaces or removing make-up.

Once flushed down the toilet, wipes can get caught in piping, accumulate and congeal with fatbergs. They also litter beaches and even create large, messy mounds along the banks of riverbeds. If you use make-up remover wipes after Christmas festivities, remember to never flush your wipes!

These small changes make a lot less waste to ensure that this Christmas does not cost the earth!

Food & Drink

MAKE THIS FESTIVE PAVLOVA WREATH!

As a special treat this festive season- and courtesy of Italian food specialist, Seggiano, here’s a fab recipe for a delicious pavlova wreath:

Ingredients: 6 medium egg whites

330g caster sugar

To fill and decorate:

500ml double cream

Selection of fresh fruit - figs, raspberries, clementines and pomegranate seeds

Seggiano Chocolate clementines

Seggiano Super Dense Fig Balsamic Glaze

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 150oC and line a large flat baking tray with non stick baking paper and draw a 30cm circle in the centre of the paper

2. Use an electric whisk or stand mixer to beat the egg

whites to soft peaks. Add the sugar, a spoonful at a time and whisk on maximum speed until the egg whites are glossy and hold stiff peaks when the whisk is removed.

3. Spoon the meringue onto the baking paper in large spoonfuls, using the circle you drew as a guide to create a wreath shape. Use the back of the spoon to create some swirls and merge the spoonfuls together. Run the spoon through the middle of the meringue to create a shallow indentation for the cream and fruit to sit in.

4. Turn the oven down to 140oC and bake for 1.5 hours. Once cooked, turn the oven off and leave the meringue inside until it has cooled completely. When ready to decorate, carefully peel off the baking paper and transfer the meringue to a serving plate.

5. Softly whip the cream and spoon over the meringue. Top with your chosen fruit and chopped chocolate covered clementines. For an extra flourish, drizzle with Seggiano Super Dense Fig Balsamic Glaze.

FIGHTING THE WINTER BLUES

First Impressions: Friendly welcome from checking to see if you need Sunday brunch reservations (you don’t), to service. The open spacious and well-spaced venue was inviting and had character!

On the menu: There was great choice for everyone with smaller breakfast plates to hearty brunch dishes that catered for vegetarian and vegan and gluten free.

Ambience: We arrived early (just after 10am) on a Sunday but it starts to get busier around 11am. Enjoyed the warm vibrant décor with plenty of artwork to view around! Great family and dog friendly venue!

Food: The food was tasty! No complaints although we were sad to have missed the halloumi and sweetcorn fritters as they had run out, but they provided us with additional choices. There’s also a large range of choices….. oh well need to come again!!

Service: You order at the table with your QR code and phone. The team were friendly, and drinks and food were brought fairly quickly. We were able to enjoy the leisurely pace of the morning.

Services/facilities: Restroom was on the ground floor so easy to access i.e. no steps.

Value for money: Good value – small breakfast bites i.e. toast from £2.95 to larger plates including Shakshuka, Big Lounge Breakfasts all under £15pp.

Overall rating: 4/5

5 DIY ways to hack your home office

1. Put the Home in 'Home Office' Offices can often have a cold and antiseptic feel to them, but your home isn’t the office and you should feel welcome to make it a much warmer environment. Adding personal touches like posters, photos and plants will make your office homier.

2. Get a second monitor

A second monitor is a cheap way to boost productivity. At a simple level it will increase the amount of screen space available to you. That means less time spent switching back and forth between various windows and tabs. A second bonus is that monitors often come on adjustable stands. That means less neck strain from looking down at a laptop.

3. Sort out the cords

The area under your desk might be a nest of tangled wires,

so pick up a zip tie to manage your cables. It's best to add zip ties at multiple points, so they stay neat from the power strip up to the desk or PC. Once you secure a tie, use a pair of scissors to snip off the end.

4. Bring in some light

If your home office doesn’t provide enough natural light, schedule regular breaks to go out for some sunlight. If you cannot get any natural light, then invest in a desk lamp that doubles up as some nice decor.

5. Boost your Wi-Fi

If you have slow internet, run a speed test; if you’re getting less than 5mbs then the problem lies squarely with your ISP. You should be getting around 20mbs. If you aren’t getting good internet speeds then think about changing to another plan that will suit your needs.

The Bromley Business Network was set up in 2019 with four founding members. This month we chat with David Spragg from T&C Printers...

Q1: What first attracted you into becoming a founding member of BBN?

It was the opportunity to potentially help people within the local business community support each other while building strong connections at the same time.

Q2: What’s your role – and some of your regular duties?

My role was to initially focus on the branding of the group so as to make sure its corporate identity is clearly represented, whether that be the pull-up banners used in the room or the pens and paper placed around the tables prior to attendees arriving.

Q3: Did you envisage BBN becoming as successful as it is today? And why do you think this is?

I think that the people who come along to support us really make the meeting. It goes without saying that a great networking event involves professionals making connections, but also approaching one another both before and during the event can be difficult as not everybody is a natural networker. As the saying goes the smile is the Swiss army knife of networking, hence we try to make it more of a friendly atmosphere.

Q4: What makes a great networking event?

If I had to give one piece of advice I would say be honest with people about your ability to deliver on your promises and try to give as much back as you receive. It’s incredibly easy to attend a networking event and solely take from the room; people buy from people hence it takes time to get to know, like and trust each other.

Q5: When you’re not busy working or helping organise BBN, what do you get up to in your spare time?

Friends and family are very important to me, so spending time with them is important to me. I also love going to the gym, riding my motorbikes and skiing when I get the chance.

Third of work lost via unanswered calls

A landmark study from Fix Radio – the UK’s only national radio station for builders and tradespeople – has found that 34% of tradespeople believe they have lost work because they weren't able to answer their phone. It also revealed that 60% of respondents said they struggled to answer the phone when they were at work, which could result in losing some vital new business.

One idea to overcome this is to consider hiring a virtual assistant. They can take your calls so your customers get to speak to a real person and not an answer machine. One such company is The Modern Day VA. Call Debbie on 07986 583987

Did You Know

Fact or fiction? Being cold will give you a cold

Fiction: Although colds are more likely to spread during winter months, this isn’t because the chilly weather gives you colds. Colds are caused by viruses that spread through direct contact or via small droplets or aerosols in the air. One of the main reasons we see more cases of colds in cold weather is because people spend an increased amount of time inside where the warm, low humidity environment helps the cold viruses to survive in the air for longer. Staying inside also means you are in closer contact with other people who may be infectious giving you a higher chance of catching a cold.

School Streets

Help keep colds at bay: Honey can help suppress coughs and soothe sore throats. With its unique antibacterial properties, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, Manuka Honey is ideal if you are coming down with a cold. Eat it straight off the spoon or mixed with warm water and lemon for a soothing and comforting drink. Try a spoonful of Comvita’s Manuka Honey every morning. See comvita.co.uk

£24m to boost children’s literacy

More primary school pupils will benefit from high quality phonics and expert literacy teaching as part of new government funding. Over £24 million is set to be invested in building children’s literacy skills as the government continues to support pupils’ recovery from the pandemic and work towards the target of 90% of primary children reaching the expected standard in literacy and numeracy.

Mums For Lungs, a grassroots clean air campaign group, are campaigning for more schools across London to adopt ‘School Streets’. The idea behind the concept is that by closing streets around schools to most motor traffic at pick-up and dropoff times, children’s exposure to pollution is limited, not to mention the extra exercise and safety measures put in place that restricting traffic around schools brings. If you would like a School Street on your road or at your school, Mums For Lungs advises residents to write to local councillors to suggest the School Streets scheme, or if you are a parent of a child at a local school, you can write to the head teacher and local councillors. Air pollution permanently damages children’s health, and awareness is generally low.

Health Check

An interview with senior audiologist, Ana Rodrigues, Hearbase Bromley, 4 East Street, BR1 1QX

Why should I have my hearing tested?

Not being able to hear seriously impacts your quality of life, not to mention talking with friends, family and others. I recommend if you show any of these early signs, you should get it checked. If you are concerned about someone close to you who struggles to hear, speak to them about getting a free hearing test and why not join them to offer support if they need a little bit of encouragement?

What is an audiologist?

An audiologist is a clinical health care professional responsible for helping those who have problems with their hearing and balance disorders. It’s a highly qualified role, and each day an audiologist could be assessing and fitting hearing aids, providing ear protection, tinnitus support and advising on balance and wax removal.

How long have you been at Hearbase?

I have been at Hearbase for nearly 4 years now and I enjoy my work, especially meeting and helping so many people in the local community, old and young, from all walks of life. I am based at the Hearbase Bromley branch, 4 East Street, BR1 1QX (opposite the old Post Office).

What are the first signs of a hearing problem?

Some of the early signs are when you struggle to keep up with conversation in noisy places, when your family tell you the TV is too loud, or when you have difficulty hearing people clearly. If you experience ringing or buzzing in your ears, or head, or a feeling of blockage, these can also be early signs of hearing loss. Also, if you find you can hear better when you look at people’s faces that can be a red flag and you should get your hearing tested.

Why should I go to Hearbase Bromley?

Well, to start, our hearing tests are completely free. This isn’t unique to us, you can get your hearing tested elsewhere, but as we are expert audiologists, if we find anything of concern after your free hearing test, we will point you in the direction of specialist services quickly. We are a really friendly bunch of people and our focus is to listen and help you to manage your hearing.

How should I look after my hearing?

If you notice any change to your hearing, large or small, then always get it checked. Having a hearing test should be done regularly like you do with your teeth and eyes. This is important however old or young you are. If you work in a noisy place or have a history of hearing loss in your family, have a hearing test, it only takes 30-60 minutes. Call us on 0208 460 8954 or email admin@hearbase.com and book your free hearing test at Hearbase Bromley today!

Why does excessive ear wax need to be removed?

All too often in my clinics I see first-hand how poor ear health can affect someone’s social interaction and quality of life. Excessive build-up of ear wax can cause hearing difficulties and discomfort. It may also contribute to ear infections. Patients using hearing aids may find that they are unable to use these effectively. Occasionally ear wax can also be hiding an undiagnosed issue and an appointment with your Hearbase hearing specialist will alert you to any findings.

What should someone do if they think they have ear wax?

In all cases please do not use any cotton buds or other devices to manually remove the wax yourself, and do not use home irrigation kits, devices or ear candles. If you think you have excessive ear wax, I strongly advise you to contact me at Hearbase Bromley so I can remove this safely, quickly and hygienically using micro-suction (like a small hoover) or water irrigation.

How to get the perfect pet photo Pets lifestyle

1. Have treats and toys at hand: This will help to focus attention on taking the photo and also acts as a good reward after they have been hard at work posing.

2. Avoid using flash: Using natural lighting allows photos to appear less posed and can help to capture pets in their everyday settings.

3. Use burst mode for action shots: To capture your pet in their truest form, use burst or continuous mode on your mobile phone to get action shots.

4. Focus on the face: A busy background can make for a distracted image. Blurring the background, for example by using a phone’s portrait mode feature, can get distractions out of the way.

5. Use photoshop to edit pics: Photoshop is a way to add creativity and enhance images, as well as to include

fun additions to experiment with design and layout.

6. Experiment with lenses: Some camera lenses allow for closer perspectives of animals, and others are better for wider frames. It is recommended to take photos of a pet from further away as they are less likely to be disturbed.

7. Go to the pet’s eye level: Getting down to their level will make for a more realistic photo, whilst allowing you to see the world from their perspective.

8. Get candid shots: A photo of a pet sitting posed and well-behaved is not an accurate representation of how they usually act, so capture them during everyday settings. This could be when they’re running, eating, playing or sleeping and will allow your pet’s personality to shine through.

Home & Garden lifestyle

Roofing - 4 week wait

Winter can put a strain on our homes and so preparing ahead of the colder, wetter months is a smart move for those looking to avoid unnecessary maintenance costs. Research by Help me Fix has highlighted five maintenance tasks that homeowners need to consider before winter arrives -and how current waiting times mean they’re best to get their house in order sooner rather than later…

Boiler check - 1 week wait

One of the most common household issues during the winter months is a problem with our boiler. It can cost anywhere between £60 to £120 for a service check, up to £200 for boiler repair and as much as £400 for a power flush.

Brickwork - 4 week wait

One area that is often overlooked ahead of winter is our brickwork. However, inadequate brickwork pointing can be a major issue and over time it allows water ingress, as well as increasing the chances of frost damage and damp - two issues that are far more prevalent during the winter months. It costs just £50 to £60 on average per square metre to repoint your brickwork.

Much like our brick work, problems with our roofing rarely materialise until the cold and rain starts to batter our homes on a regular basis. Missing or cracked tiles are a particularly frequent problem and can lead to further issues. While a roof inspection will set you back around £250, repairs that don’t require scaffolding can generally be done for around £170 for roughly five tiles - which is far more cost effective in the long run.

Water pipes - 1 week wait

Blocked, burst or frozen pipes can be a nightmare and one that often becomes a reality during the winter months. Insulating your pipes or fitting pipe jackets can be done for as little as £50 and up which is a huge saving compared to the damage done from a burst pipe.

Windows & doors - 2 week wait

Even the most minor misalignment of a window or door can lead to a considerable amount of heat loss, or rainwater entering your home. While the latter will cause damage from damp, the ability to heat our homes efficiently has also never been more pressing due to the rising cost of energy bills. A general inspection will cost around £150, while replacing a double glazed window can cost between £70 to £150.

Help your lawn survive the big freeze

Just because the cold winter weather is on the horizon, it doesn’t mean we should be neglecting our gardens. Here are some tips from David Truby of Greensleeves…

1. Keep mowing: The trick is to continue mowing your lawn as needed, never allowing it to become too long as this can significantly reduce the quality and potentially increase the severity of moss invasion. Ensure the mower blades are sharp, so as not to cause damage to the lawn itself. Never attempt to mow your lawn if it is saturated or covered in frost.

2. Watch for moss and mould: Both infestations can have devastating effects on your grass, so it is important you target them at source. To stop a moss invasion, target the moss using specially formulated treatments which are designed to desiccate the thatch and prevent it from developing further. On the other hand, snow mould is a fungal disease that appears on the lawn as yellowish/brown patches. To prevent this kind of fungal disease, I strongly recommend removing any leaves or debris by gently raking or using a leaf blower.

3. Keep composting: Not only does composting provide your soil with organic nutrients, but it also aids in the suppression of weed growth and insulates plant roots, with the added benefit of reducing soil erosion from rain damage.

4. Don’t forget to mulch: Mulching plays a key role in your lawn’s survival. Usually made from materials such as straw, shredded leaves or wood chips, it creates a barrier between the soil and the air itself, shielding the grass beneath.

The 12 days of clean-mas

Day 1: Rescue your Christmas decorations from the attic and give them a well-needed dust.

Day 2: De-clutter and deep clean room by room. Don’t forget those usually forgotten items such as doorknobs, handles, letterboxes and skirting boards.

Day 3: Make your windows sparkle and freshen up the floors.

Day 4: Tackle the dishwasher and washing machine.

Day 5: De-clutter and clean your car ready for the holidays.

Day 6: Give the toilets a deep clean!

Day 7: Descale your kettle ready for the winter warming hot drinks.

Day 8: Tackle the stairs! For stubborn stains try Dr. Beckmann’s Carpet Stain Remover.

Day 9: Clean and empty your fridge ready for the festive food.

Day 10: Spruce up your pet’s bed ready for the Christmas fun.

Day 11: Give the oven a deep clean ready for Christmas dinner.

Day 12: Pop all of the family’s Christmas jumpers in the wash ready for the big day!

Xmas Life Hacks

How to make a Christmas wreath

Christmas wreaths are a great way to decorate the outside of your home and make your house look like a real-life Christmas movie. Rather than buying one this year, why not try and make your own? Here’s how with the help of Liam Lapping from Flowercard…

1. Make it green

Important talks around climate change have made people think more about the planet and the impact they’re having on it. Christmas decorations shouldn’t be exempt from this, so when you’re making your wreath, try using a rattan frame instead of a metal one, then go out foraging to find different types of spruce variants to add depth and texture to your wreath. Scrap the plastic decorations and instead opt for dried flowers, dried fruit and natural holly to adorn your Christmas wreath.

2. Make it last longer

If you’re using all-natural decorations, then you need to keep your wreath looking as good as the day you made it. Get an old spray bottle and fill it with water. Every few days give your wreath a spray and it will stay fresh.

3. Measure your door

Most wreaths are placed on the front door of a home, however, if you want to get creative you can also place a wreath on your garage, gate, shed or even window. Wherever you put your wreath, make sure to measure the space and ensure it fits.

4. Think about your colour scheme

Depending on where you want to put your wreath, think about your colour scheme. Inside, ensure the colours you’re adding

to your wreath match the colours on your tree and your decorations. If you’re putting your wreath outside, you can experiment with different colours and be bold!

5. Go from large to small

When it comes to making the perfect wreath Liam says: “It’s best to start large then work your way down. Start with your large piece of foliage first, then bulk out with smaller pieces of foliage and flowers, then decorate with smaller dried ingredients.”

Step 1:

Start with a wreath ring - these come in all sorts of materials, but to reduce waste we suggest a rattan or moss ring. Take your evergreen foliage and begin to twist it around the ring, ensuring to keep the leaves and branches facing outwards. Continue until you have covered your wreath ring, you may need to tie the foliage in place using twine to stop it from moving.

Step 2:

Overlap your current wreath with different types of foliage to add depth and texture to your wreath.

Step 3:

At this stage, you can begin adding any extra foliage into sparse places within your wreath to bulk it out. Moss works really well for this. You can also use dried flowers to inject colour and brighten your wreath.

Step 4:

Finally, finish your wreath with dried fruits and berries. You could even spray paint pinecones in your chosen colour scheme.

1. Let the games begin! Ditch the small talk in favour of some favourite board games - it will get your guests relaxed in no time at all!

2. Mood lighting is key - whether you're using fairy lights or candles or just dimming the lights, check that everything works!

3. Music - come up with a playlist to suit all tastes. Ask your guests before they arrive what their three favourite songs are to add to the list.

4. Food checks - double check with your guests what they like/don't like or are allergic to. Some might be vegan or gluten intolerant so it's best to check. If you're celebrating an event - don't forget the cake!

5. Double check you have everything - the food, dessert and wine, but also things like napkins, decorations, music set up, ice, lemons or limes for drinks, the fire lit etc

Christmas is a time to be more vigilant when it comes to looking after your property and belongings. With presents under the tree, burglaries typically increase at this time of the year, so think about some security measures you can take. Local companies can help –from installing an alarm with ADT Security Solutions (call 07923443856), to investing in outdoor lighting (Call GB Electrical on 01322219717 or Hale Electrics on 020 3086 7631) for extra security.

Short Story

PARTY POLITICS

“Good evening, Clive. Found you at last. When I asked you to look for somewhere new from which we could spread the word about our dynamic party policies I thought you would find somewhere that was on the map. When I asked the way, nobody had heard of it.”

“Sorry Madam. It is on the map – right hand corner. Not too easy to find but it is there. Here, borrow my magnifying glass”

“Thanks. So it is – just. Well, I had better run through my speech if you have it ready. Lots of local references, I hope – but, of course, you are so good at that. I couldn’t possibly manage without you.”

“No Madam.”

“Last lap of this election frenzy, thank goodness. Can’t come too soon. What a bore it all is. Now then, remind me where it is that I am so delighted to be, at last, on this cold, wet afternoon?”

“Brightsea Madam.”

“Never heard of it.”

“Not many people have, Madam, but you did say that we were to spread ourselves a bit and find new areas to conquer.”

“Are we likely to meet with success in -er - this place?”

“Brightsea, Madam. Let’s just say that it’ll provide a challenge.”

“What’s it like? Anything of interest?”

“Not a lot, nowadays. Used to be architecturally splendid. Now consists mainly of a new shopping mall where every retail outlet looks pretty much like every other. The centre has been pedestrianised.”

“To make for safer shopping?”

“To accommodate children’s expensive entertainment –roundabouts and such like.”

“What do the adults do in these places?”

“There’s an amateur theatre that puts on some good plays, and they are getting their sound system sorted as we speak. There’s a professional theatre known for its abundance of steps - and scarcity of lifts. There’s a cinema, several noisy pubs, a bingo hall and an arts centre. See – every voter catered for.”

“Let’s get on. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls’ - what is this? I thought I made it clear that I would never address children again. They are nothing but trouble.”

“Ask a lot of silly questions?”

“No no. Ask a lot of very good questions – to which I don’t always know the answers. What’s the point of all that aggro anyway? Kids can’t vote.”

“Most of these can Madam. They’re A-level students. Young people really. That’s why I put ‘ladies and gents.’ There might just be a few younger ones as well. I’m afraid you have to put up with them. They come with the venue.”

“They what?”

“The meeting is being held in their school.”

“Why for goodness sake? There must be other places.”

“Not exactly Madam. Well, there are other places, of course, but we couldn’t hire them. They were all ‘unavailable’.”

“Should have booked sooner.”

“Not possible. We just aren’t the party of choice for this area. The party’s views, although excellent of course, absolutely spot on, they – er – do not go down too well in Brightsea. It was the school or nothing. But I am sure that you’ll win everyone over.”

“So just why is this school so accommodating?”

“I believe that it is part of their citizenship course, Madam. Comes under the heading of ‘Modern World’. They have to find out what the various parties believe and argue for or against it in class.”

“Do they indeed? How do they know what we believe?”

“Well, they don’t of course any more than the rest of us, but they note the promises you make. Then they follow up the successful candidates and see what actually happenswhether you do what you say you are going to do.”

“Oh my gosh.”

“Not to worry, Madam. I’ve worded your speech with great care. You are not, on behalf of your party, promising anything that you won’t have a good, publishable reason for reneging on, if times get difficult.”

“As they will.”

“As they most certainly will.”

“Right. Let lying commence. ‘Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be with you in this lovely town today. If my party gets in I can promise you...”

A Final Thought…

You can teach an old dog new tricks – all about Bromley u3a

If you are retired, think you know everything worth knowing and have no desire to learn anything new then read no further.

If, on the other hand, you are no longer working full time, but feel you are ready to learn new things, develop new interests and meet new people, then the u3a could be for you.

So what is the u3a? The initials stand for university of the third age and it is unfortunate that the first word puts many people off. They imagine an educational institution with lofty academic aspirations, homework, exams and expectations of diligent study. University in this context, however, is used in the sense of the original Latin word referring to a number of people associated into one body, society, company or community. U3a members are a community of people who enjoy getting together because they share an interest in developing a new skill, or perhaps enhancing their existing ones, and the term third age just refers to people who are retired, or semi-retired, and there is no defined lower age for membership. The u3a is a UK-wide collection of 1000+ charities, each run by its members, for its members

Bromley u3a was founded in 1990 and now boasts well over 1,000 members and more than 70 interest groups ranging from Rambling, Keep fit, Golf and Table Tennis through to Bridge, Watercolour Painting, Gardening and a range of Modern Languages at all levels. In addition, there are large monthly meetings where visiting specialist speakers come to give talks on subjects as diverse as Modernising Money to Making Sense of the Weather. You can check out the whole range of groups on offer on our website: https://u3abromley.org.uk, and make a membership application if you decide to join, for a modest yearly fee of only £20. For some groups there may also be a small payment per session to cover room/equipment hire.

The motto of the u3a is Learn, Laugh, Live and although the emphasis is on learning, members also value the social side of meetings. In our 2020 30th Anniversary Booklet, member Cliff Broughton wrote: “We have found U3A to be a really great self-help organisation where one can continue to enjoy companionship with like-minded people from all walks of life. A true ‘university’ of continued learning and participation beyond retirement, and we are truly grateful to all those volunteers who give up their time to promote and run u3a Bromley”. In the same booklet, member Jim Wharton wrote: “I have enjoyed the Golf, Science, French and Philosophy groups. I strongly believe in the u3a and advise friends, both retired and especially those about to retire, of the value of membership as a means of keeping one’s mind active and of meeting new people.”

Research has proved the benefits of maintaining an active social life and what better way to meet people than to get involved in the running of a group, or even the branch? And if there’s no group offering the subject you want, why not start one yourself, you don’t have to be an expert. U3a Bromley will help and support you and you can draw on the u3a’s wealth of national resources and specialist central subject advisors too.

To find out more, contact membershipsecretary@ u3abromley.org.uk

During the pandemic many of our groups kept going using online methods, but most have now returned to meeting face-to-face. If you are no longer mobile or temporarily incapacitated there is a national version called Trust u3a which meets online. Their web address is: https://u3asites.org.uk/trustu3a/welcome

For retired Orpington residents or those working part-time who are interested in joining, there is also a group. For more information email membersadmin@ u3aorpington.org.uk or call 07732 005819.
