Getting Orpington to know Farming in the district Even 100 years ago Orpington hadn’t quite developed into the suburban town it is now. It was going through huge change in the 1920s and 1930s that would see large housing developments arrive. This wasn’t any different to other areas in what we call now call Greater London.

Circa 1900: Hop picking at Court Lodge Farm Orpington

To build these residential areas, land was needed. Farmland was being sold off all over the area, and in this article we look at some of the bigger farms that existed in the district, those that were lost and those that managed to hold on and remain in what would become the green belt. Orpington and its District owes its success to its farms. Land within the various Manors was carefully managed for centuries. The District farms were typical to those in Kent and the Southeast. The better weather allowed good conditions for soft fruits, hops and other sunloving vegetables to flourish. All local farms produced these, with some specialising in poultry, dairy and pigs. Farms in the district, one year in the late 1800s, produced more strawberries than any other in the country - one-fifth of the country’s production! Orpington also produced a fair number of hops which supported The Oak Brewery at Green St Green. The picking of the produce offered an annual holiday away from the pollution of life in London, and ‘pickers’ were a common sight in Orpington, St Mary Cray, Farnborough and Chelsfield right up to the mid-20th century.

Did you know?

Circa 1900: Fruit picking at Perry Hall Farm Orpington

Pigs at Tripes Farm were fed leftovers from the Savoy Hotel!

There are too many to list, but you may remember and recognise some of these: • • • • • • •

Orpington - Perry Hall Farm - Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Lost in the 1920s Orpington - Court Lodge Farm - Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Lost in the 1920s Orpington - Home Farm - Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Lost in the 1920s Orpington – Tubbenden - W H Cook Poultry - Lost in the 1940s Orpington – Ramsden - Dairy, Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Lost in the 1950s Orpington - Place Farm - Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Lost in the 1960s St Mary Cray - Manor Farm - Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Lost in the 1950s

• • • • • •

St Pauls Cray - Grays Farm - Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Lost in the 1950s Farnborough - Viners Farm - Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Lost in the 1990s Farnborough - Woodlands Farm - Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Still operating Orpington - Tripes Farm Pigs, Dairy and Grains - Still operating Chelsfield - Hewitt’s Farm - Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Still operating Chelsfield - Court Lodge Farm - Soft fruits, Hops and grains - Still operating

Farmland surrounding Farnborough, Chelsfield, St Mary Cray and St Paul’s Cray to the east still exists and operates successfully, mainly as a result of rules around development being put in place - and that modern day farming can use land without necessarily having the overheads that individual farms once had.

A Final Thought…

lifestyle

Watch your language: Why being a language nerd can be really rewarding by JAMIE WRIGHT If I think back to my childhood, through the fuzzy sepia-tinted lens that is my imperfect recollection of that time, punctuated by bursts of Spandau Ballet and my mum’s friends sporting enormous gravity-defying perms, I think it was then that my love for language was kindled. I used to devour words; books on dinosaurs/poe ms/World records/classic motorcycles/e ncyclopaedias… even the backs of shampoo bottles when I was in the bath. If it was printed, I would read it. I used to make up games with similar sounding words and try them out in class with my teachers when discussing Meg and Mog…. "Miss? With which rich witch did she itch the itch?" Insufferable, I know, but I was laying the foundations of something that would bring me joy for the rest of my life.

A rare sight…

In the March 2021 edition of Life in Orpington, you published a letter from Sandra Holder talking about white squirrels. The writer refers to “the border of Green Street Green/Chelsfield” and I can report that my wife and I saw a white squirrel in Glentrammon Recreation Ground which is the same area. However, our sighting was at least three years ago! I would be surprised if this is the same one as any albino animal would not be expected to survive long in the wild. On the other hand, it would be remarkable if it was a second one when the chances of seeing just one are 1 in 100,000! So, chances are it is the same one and it has done well to survive. Guess we shall never know.

At secondary school I was suddenly presented with new avenues to explore where I was no longer bounded by my own language but was periodically given access to new and exotic tongues. I would fantasise about speaking French fluently (although I was really only able to hon-hi-hon-hi-hon at this point) and order food, discuss pop music or even the weather. When my friend and his parents bought a run-down Norman farmhouse at the tail-end of the 1980s and I was invited to spend the weekend there with them, I grabbed my shell suit and Walkman and made myself ready the trip. Things that are cultural commonplaces for now seemed rare and glamourous; freshly made bread still warm from the baker; rotisserie chickens slow roasting in rows outside the butchers. But what was the most intoxicating was the access to the secret code that was their language. The soupçon of French that I had already acquired (see what I did there) seemingly unlocked doors and gave me backstage access to an alternative way of doing things. I was hooked. One year later and I had started learning German. This was an altogether different beast but one that very much had its own charms. Far from fretting over the linguistic hoops that German word order made me jump through or contending with the fact that now I had

Richard Marsh

another gender for describing things (so a girl is neuter but a drinking cup is feminine?), I was enthralled by German’s lego-like ability to construct words. Need to describe the item of clothing used to keep your hands warm but with no word for ‘glove’? No problemHandschuh (hand shoe) is the solution. The invention of motorised transport means you need a word for ‘vehicle’- Fahrzeug (driving thing) is the answer. As I learnt about the linguistic heritage of my own language and how in many ways it shows the imprint of both French and German, I began to take more and more interest in language. I became fascinated too with Latin and classical Greek (learning the latter after school) and could hear and see everywhere in the language I spoke the hallmarks of generations of people. Some things would come in handy in the odd pub quiz while others would give you an insight into the thoughts of sometimes ancient peoples (did you know, for instance, that the English word barbarian which comes from the Greek βάρβαρος (Barbaros) probably came from the fact the Greeks thought that was how non-Greeks spoke, i.e. bah-bah-rah and so came to mean wild or savage….the latinized version of this name became a popular girls’ name- no offence intended to any Barbaras out there.

The reason I felt moved to write this piece was not so much because I thought the people of Orpington would very much enjoy a potted version of my life through the prism of language (which I am sure they don’t) but rather I would like to encourage everyone, when they can, to take pleasure in language. It can be your own language and taking the opportunity to read more in 2021 when lockdown means that you can’t meet up with friends as much as you would like and you have exhausted everything worth watching on Netflix. Or, and I have to declare an interest here given that I am a language teacher at a local school, making 2021 the year that you will learn a new language. It might seem to be counter-intuitive in this time of increased physical and ideological separation from Europe but rediscover the joy of using that special code when the borders re-open.

lifeinmagazines.co.uk

March 2021 Life in... Orpington 31

I picked up the magazine tonight and read Jamie's ‘Final Thought’ article on being a language nerd which was interesting. My son Louis is learning Mandarin and Spanish at school and he has been teaching me some phrases during lockdown. He is teaching me to speak to our cleaner at work who only speaks Spanish.

I was reading your article in the latest edition of your magazine with interest regarding the rare sight of a pure white squirrel. When I was a young boy during the 1960s, I used to caddy for my late father during his weekend rounds of golf at Shirley Park Golf Club and occasionally would see pure white squirrels on the course. As you can see from the picture, part of the Golf club’s logo dating back to 1939, features a white squirrel. I believe that white squirrels are still seen very occasionally around the course.

Michelle David-Hooper

Alan Imms

Last year around June a white squirrel appeared in our garden in The Ridge, Orpington. For a couple of months it came regularly to eat the bird food but then gradually started coming less frequently. We haven't seen him since some time last autumn so has possibly now taken up residence in Green Street Green/Chelsfield. I've attached a picture. Terry Wilson-Hooper

And we also had a response from the Kent Wildlife Trust… “Whilst lovely to see they are not that rare and are becoming increasingly common.” kentwildlifetrust.org.uk

MAYOR’S VOICE… Despite it being my penultimate month as Bromley Mayor, that doesn’t mean that I’ve been let off the hook when it comes to appointments to keep. In fact, it’s hard to know where to begin. But before I do, I must let you know about a special children’s art competition that I’m running for children up to the age of 11 to showcase their creativity! We’re asking children to use their imagination and create a piece of hand-crafted art that reflects the theme, ‘Follow Your Dreams’. Entry forms can be found on the Bromley Council website (www.bromley.gov.uk/mayor), and the closing date for entries is Wednesday 21st April. Please email your child’s artwork, along with the entry form, to Mayors.Office@bromley.gov.uk and I will be announcing the winner live on Facebook on Monday 26th April at 2:30pm. It was a great honour to meet the lovely Mrs Blumenfeld virtually on Zoom to wish her a happy 100th birthday. She told me how she loves life and is the first lady of their Synagogue - she was a delight to chat to. I was also delighted to be invited to two events for the Celebration of Achievement Awards for the Children Looked After and Care Leavers. I heard about their wonderful achievements – here’s an image depicting a collage of the wonderful works of art done by them.

the start, which were quickly sorted, it all went smoothly – and the meeting ensued with plenty of political debate. And I also enjoyed making a few videos – a couple to mark St David’s Day and St Patrick’s Day (viewable on the Mayor of Bromley Facebook page) with one for St George’s Day coming up, and a video was also incorporated into the Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards that recognises outstanding young people aged 11-23 across London and Essex. It’s such an important event and I was delighted to play a part in acknowledging those who so deserved it. I also opened a new agency in Bromley North called Loop Talent, which represents below the line talent including cinematographers, production designers, costume designers and hair and make up designers. And I attended a London Mayors Association virtual ‘Dinner and Chat’ and enjoyed calling ‘house’ with Croydon Bingo. In real life, as opposed to virtually, I continued to visit vaccination centres and thank the staff for their time and effort in protecting our nation. I marshalled at Beckenham Beacon (it was a wonderful experience to be ‘on the ground’ as it were), and I also opened Bromley vaccination centre at the Civic Centre. We recently celebrated the Mayor of Bromley Awards virtually. The actual presentation of the awards was done personally by myself - direct to the worthy recipients’ homes. Each recipient received a badge, citation, certificate and a gift. Looking ahead, I’m also continuing to support other Mayors at their events; there’s an upcoming Richmond Quiz on 10th April and a rather interesting virtual balloon race is being organised by the Merton Mayor which launches on Easter Monday. It’s great to see some innovative ideas come out of lockdown.

Talking of events, the recently hosted Quiz Night went down a storm and offered some great evening entertainment, as well as raising much needed funds for my two charities, The Chartwell Cancer Trust and Cystic Fibrosis Supporters. At the beginning of last month, I chaired a Full Council meeting. Apart from some small technical issues at

Latest achievement: Harriet has been awarded Licentiateship of the Master Photographer Association (LMPA) – one of the hardest qualifications to achieve within the photographic profession. Healthy hacks: how to make small changes It’s World Health Day on 7th April so here’s some tips on making small changes when it comes to being healthy. • • • •

Drink more water Try herbal teas such as green tea Aim to go for a daily walk Do some exercises in front of the TV (when the ads are on!)

A closer look at… Magnesium Magnesium is found in every cell in the body and it is vital to everyday functions, yet 70% of us are thought to not be getting enough. Harley Street nutritionist and weight loss specialist, Kim Pearson, identifies three reasons to consider adding this powerful supplement to your daily routine. Stress Relief: Many of us often reach for

an alcoholic drink during periods of stress. It may feel like alcohol is de-stressing you in the short-term due to its mild sedative properties, but it is in fact a depressant that changes our levels of serotonin, meaning that you could feel more stressed and anxious as the effects wear off. Studies show that magnesium may reduce stress by positively impacting the hypothalamus which controls our stress responses. So, upping your levels of magnesium is a more effective way to de-stress.

Better Sleep: Magnesium is a fantastic sleep aid. The mineral works to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which promotes feelings of calm and relaxation. Boost Your Energy: One of the key roles of magnesium is supporting energy creation within the body, aiding the process of converting our food into energy. Some studies have even shown that magnesium can boost athletic performance such as running, swimming and cycling. Did you know… you don’t have to take tablets to get magnesium. Better You offers transdermal application (application through the skin) See betteryou.com/pages/ transdermal-magnesium

GET CLEAR! It’s estimated that 13 million people in the UK suffer from seasonal allergic rhinitis, otherwise known as hay fever. Allergens normally begin spreading throughout the country in the spring, when plants begin to release pollen; however, research is showing that allergy season tends to get worse every year, and the length of time that these allergens spread across the country is growing. Xlear Sinus Care Saline Nasal Spray (£11.99 for 45ml) is available from independent health stores and Amazon and contains xylitol, which has special cleansing benefits not found in normal nasal spray, to provide fast relief for congestion and clearing the nose of allergens. Unlike its synthetic counterparts, Xlear’s Nasal Spray is 100% natural and safe for daily use, without any side effects or the risk of long-term damage.

Tips for hay fever sufferers include: • Be aware of the pollen count: There are a few good

websites and apps that can alert you when specific allergens are high in your area. Knowing when levels are higher will help you prepare. • Close the windows: Even though it is warm and nice outside, make sure to keep your house as allergen-free as possible so you have a place to escape when needed. • Frequently shower: You will always come in contact with allergens—it’s inevitable. Getting the allergens off your body is key to making sure you don’t have a bad reaction. Shower morning and night and wash your hands and face throughout the day. • Frequently wash bedding and linens: Make sure the places you spend the most time are fresh and clean. It is also a good idea to get mattress and pillow covers for allergies.

• Don’t use the car’s heating/air conditioning unless it is filtered: Many car heating and air conditioning units suck

in air from the outside so it is good to find out if your car’s system filters the air or you are at risk of sucking in and circulating pollen and allergens.

Spray Xlear Nasal Spray twice in each nostril when you wake in the morning and before bed. For more information, please visit https://www.xlear.com/ A free PDF checklist is available at April 2021 Life in... Orpington 19 www.careertransitionsdmh.co.uk

Q: A:

Ask The Experts

It’s my aunt’s funeral soon and we were really close. I want to say something myself but I don’t know if I’ll be able to and I’ve also been asked to contribute to the eulogy. I don’t know what’s required - there is also some family history that I don’t want to be mentioned. What do you suggest?

Well, first of all, when it comes to talking, I would always suggest to somebody perhaps to write a letter or pre-record something so that they’re able to control their emotions. We’re able to do that. When it comes to people’s history and background, there are always, what I call, landmines in most families and as long as I am told I am able to avoid them. I am happy to write the eulogy and I also take lots of different people’s views, maybe work colleagues, friends, old school friends and family members to give a really good, rounded view of that person and their life.

Michelle Harvey Life Celebrant

Q: Why should I keep reviewing my Will? A:

If the last year has taught us anything, it is that life is continually evolving and circumstances change. We encourage people to revisit their Wills after a major life event such as additional children or grandchildren or change in home or business circumstance.

Anthony Rockliffe, Southeast Legacies

Q: I keep hearing people say it’s important to have a career plan – but why? A:

Any change brings its own challenges and when events like the pandemic impact on the options available, it can be even more difficult to know what to do. The impact of Covid19 on employment options have forced many people to reconsider their career pathway so having a plan is even more important. It helps you to be intentional in what you want from a career and to take control of what your future may look like. In the same way that you would have a financial plan or a business plan, a career plan helps to guide your next steps and keep you on track as you work towards your career goals. To start the process, you should take stock of where you are now and to be realistic in the options available to you. Consider your skills, knowledge, experiences and your personal circumstances. For example, do you have to find a job immediately because it may impact on your finances? Also try to define your goals by determining if you would like to stay in a similar job role, occupation, or sector. Are you considering a new career pathway? Are you looking for a role where you can \ make a difference? What are your values and how do they relate to your job? You should also aim to establish how your transferable skills relate to your desired job and whether they will provide the job satisfaction that you are seeking. Planning your career puts you in the driving seat of your professional development and helps you to take control of your next steps.

Getting divorced ?

advertorial

Here’s how a forensic accountant can ensure you don’t lose thousands There are more than 90,000 divorces each year in the UK, each costing approximately £14,000 in fees on average. However, it is also estimated that many divorcees could be losing out on thousands of pounds in cash and other assets due to unreliable figures and information that is hidden by the other party. According to Steve Hale, Partner of Perrys Chartered Accountants, although fraud in divorce is rare, many assets can be hidden. He said: “Assets include things such as cash, bonds, insurance policies, stocks and annuities. If one spouse has a greater knowledge of the marriage’s overall financial position, then it is easier for them to hide this information from the other person.”

What are the red flags for dishonesty in divorce?: These are some of the ways to spot whether your spouse might be trying to hide information from you: 1. They’ve changed information on joint accounts without your knowledge – for example, updating passwords 2. Unexpected or unexplained cash withdrawals 3. Loaning or giving away money to family and friends, especially if the amount is large 4. Transferring property or assets to family members without a genuine reason 5. A ‘sudden’ drop in income 6. If your spouse has their own business and suddenly declares a reduction in the value of the business or changes its structure

However, while you might suspect your spouse of being dishonest, it could be difficult to prove anything without the help of a forensic accountant.

What is a forensic accountant? “A forensic accountant analyses financial documents to uncover discrepancies or hidden assets and ensure that there is a fair financial distribution in a divorce,” says Steve. “This could include exposing unrelated businesses that have been set up to conceal incomes, uncovering overstated liabilities or revealing that profits have been downplayed.” Following an investigation, a forensic accountant will provide their findings to a divorce solicitor so that these can be looked at in further detail.

However, forensic accountants aren’t just for determining whether a spouse is acting fraudulently in a divorce. They can also be used to provide professional valuations on assets and income, determine the correct child support amount, perform business valuations and assist solicitors in finding out other information necessary for ensuring an equitable outcome. Steve added:

“The important thing with any divorce, especially ones involving high net worth individuals, is to ensure that financial information is current and correct. This is the only way to guarantee that there is a fair and reasonable settlement for both parties.”

Easter recipe

Zesty Chocolate and Orange Loaf Cake - 175 g butter, softened - 175 g caster sugar - 3 large eggs - Grated zest of 1 orange, plus 1 tablespoon of orange juice - 200g self-raising flour - 50 g ground almonds - A splash of milk - 3-4 Double Chocolate Chip Cookie Doughballs, crumbled

To decorate: - - - - -

Melted chocolate Flaked almonds Slices of orange peel orange zest orange slices

1. Preheat the oven to 170°C and grease and line a 900g loaf tin with greaseproof paper. 2. Beat together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating until combined. Add a couple of tablespoons of the weighed flour if the mix looks as if it is beginning to curdle.

3. Add the orange zest and orange juice followed by the flour and ground almonds. Beat until you have a smooth, thick batter. Add a splash of milk if it is a little too thick. 4. Spoon ¾ of the mix into the prepared tin. Scatter over the crumbled cookie dough, nestling in so that it is evenly distributed throughout the loaf. Top with the remaining mix and smooth over the surface. 5. Bake for around 55 minutes to 1 hour or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the loaf comes out clean – the exact time will depend on the shape of your tip (some loaf tins are long and narrow, others are shorter and thicker). 6. Leave to cool in the tin for 20 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to finish cooling completely. 7. Drizzle with melted chocolate and sprinkle with your chosen decorations. Cut into slices and serve. Doughlicious.

ESSENTIAL BIKE CHECKS BEFORE YOU GET BACK IN THE SADDLE Always do a pre-ride safety check which should include checking your tyre pressure, brakes, helmet and chain – at the very least. If you haven’t ridden your bike in a while, pre-ride checks will need to be more thorough including testing breaks, gear shifting, inspecting the wheels and tyres, but it’s advisable you allow a qualified bicycle mechanic to give your bike a health check first and to show you how to keep on top of the regular checks.

5 warm weather DIY projects for spring 1. Turn old jars & cans into flower baskets: You

might have an old watering can or mason jar lying around that you won’t use, so why not turn them into flower baskets? Use the handle of the watering cans or attach a hook to the mason jars so you can hang them on your outside walls and fences. 2. Spring wreath: Who says wreaths are just for Christmas? You can create your own wreath from anything, and you can decorate it with spring appropriate items like overhanging flowers or seed packets. 3. Bring the outside in: Take disused flower pots or vases and bring them into your rooms to give them

a spring bloom feeling too. If you have a glass case, create a mini garden to complement your living room with brightly coloured flowers. Plating up: If you want to replace your dinnerware, don’t just throw them out. You can turn an old plate into a bird feeder, simply hanging it using a piece of rope and placing bird seed on it. Turning patterns into furniture: With a spring clear out of old clothes you no longer need, consider repurposing them into blankets for your bed or sofa, or even cushions or pillowcases to make your rooms pop.

The World’s Best Passports According to research conducted by Nomad Capitalist, Swedish, Luxembourgish and Irish passports are the best ones to own. Passports were ranked on visa-free travel, international taxation laws, global perception, dual citizenship and personal freedom.

1) Sweden 1) Luxembourg 1) Ireland 4) Switzerland 4) Belgium 6) Finland 6) Portugal 8) Singapore 8) Czech Republic 8) Malta

The British passport ranked at number 11 as its citizens can visit 185 countries visa-free, are almost always allowed to hold another citizenship, have relatively high levels of personal freedom and are thought-about quite highly abroad. Unfortunately for Brits, it is more difficult to become legally tax non-resident when moving abroad.

Q: I’m planning on taking my wife away for a short break at Christmas. Is it best to book now - and if so, where should I be looking and what precautions should I take?

A: How lovely and a lucky wife! Great destinations for Christmas include The Caribbean and The Indian Ocean. They may not seem like typical festive destinations, but don’t discount them as they have a lot to offer! In general, the earlier you book, the better the prices and in terms of precautions, bear in mind you may need to have a Negative PCR (Covid) test completed and be able to submit evidence of it if required. Adequate insurance also needs to be taken out with additional Covid-19 cover – so check the small print! Jude Greene-Steward, Shore Travel Making your holiday dreams come true…

The big spring clean made easy

Spring is a great time to get the house looking back to its best. A bit of organising or cleaning can help you feel happier, de-stress and even make you feel more focused. Not only can it lead to feeling better, but a bit of spring cleaning can also make you more productive and save time across the rest of the year. Although it may seem daunting at first it, the benefits will be well worth the time you put in now. Here’s some top tips from Peddler.com on how to spring clean efficiently and make the task less intimidating. Declutter – Maybe the biggest part of a spring clean is getting rid of the clutter that you don’t need. Over the years you may have collected a lot of junk so the best place to start before you even begin cleaning is identifying what you can immediately get rid of to clear space and free up the home. Sort between items that can be thrown away, given away or stored. Once you have more space you can start the cleaning.

Start room by room and work from top to bottom – When the whole house needs a spring clean it can be overwhelming. An easy way to get started is to work room by room. Choose the room you want to begin with and make sure to always start from the top. Debris and dust will fall as you clean so make sure to dust off everything and then finish with hoovering at the end.

Clean with intelligence – It generally isn’t possible to clean the whole house in one go, but if you plan rooms and allocate time to clean each area you won't feel rushed and will do a much better job. Ensure you move all furniture and don’t leave any area untouched. Cutting corners just means you will have to do it again in the near future. Establish new cleaning habits – Once you have the house in order, you will want to keep it that way. Though it is probably not possible or practical to keep it in the same state after a spring clean, a simple 15-30 minute clean every few days will keep you on top of everything and even a few chores will make a big difference to keeping the house in check.

EMBRACING BIODIVERSITY: DO YOUR BIT FOR THE PLANET & ENJOY YOUR GARDEN MORE! If you’re looking to impact the environment more positively and ramp up the natural activity in your outdoor space, here’s some fab tips and expert opinions on how to create the perfect space… 1. Welcome wildlife to your garden - wildlife

is an integral factor in encouraging biodiversity in your garden. It promotes pollination, deters harmful organisms, and brings an aspect of vitality to any outdoor space. Ideas include 1. Creating a small rock garden to encourage bees, which act as an important polliniser in your garden, thus reinforcing further growth and diversity in your garden.

2. Collecting deadwood to help grow insect colonies – did you know that ladybirds act as

a natural pesticide by feeding almost exclusively on aphids (small flies) and red spider mites? By placing deadwood that you can collect from your local woodland, you will be encouraging the growth of ladybird and other beetle colonies that will act to preserve and protect your harvest. Furthermore, it can be used as hibernation grounds for small

rodents like hedgehogs, especially entering into the autumn and winter months.

3. Retaining soil moisture with decorative bark - garden bark not only has a decorative function, but it acts to prevent evaporation from the soil, discourages the growth of weeds, and over time, develops the quality of your soil. 4. Growing native plants - the benefit of planting native seeds and shrubs in your garden is simple – you are encouraging the growth of plants that are confirmed to grow well in your local area. This recognises that the plants that naturally surround you are already accustomed to the climate, pH level of the soil, and the wildlife that may feed off it. You may even be able to take cuttings of plants from your local woodland or park to cut costs. Even then, buying from a local plant nursery can also help the local economy and encourage more wildlife and sustainable growth in your local area. Compost Direct

Short Stories THE CATALYST

by DIANA ELVIN A less likely friendship would be hard to imagine – the hard drinking, outspoken retired Major and the teetotal and rather genteel old lady, but it seems to be working well. It began when Jane Thomas decided that the hedgehog in her garden looked hungry. I don’t know how you can tell with hedgehogs but she was convinced and so she put out some bread and milk. In fact, neither can easily be digested by stomachs designed for earthworms and the hedgehog wisely ignored them. Two gardens away a fox crouched watching Olive Brown’s hen run in which three tasty meals on feet provided her with free-range eggs. He was trying to find a way in which he could get in to them or persuade the hens to come out. Eventually, he ambled off for a break, passing Jane’s hedgehog offering on his way. It wasn’t his preferred diet but there is a lot of space to fill in a fox - and this one was very hungry so, as a sort of hors d’oeuvre he licked the dish clean to keep him going until he could get at the hens. Thus encouraged, Jane continued to put out bread and milk and the fox continued to empty the dish. A distinct muddy pathway soon formed across the velvety lawn of Major Cox. He stormed angrily round to complain. “You fool!” he was about to yell at Jane, “Why are you encouraging destructive wildlife?” But Jane got in first, beaming at him with genuine warmth. “Oh, hello Major. How nice to see you. Do come in. I was just about to make a hot drink.” She wasn’t but she was feeling lonely and the kettle was on in a trice. The Major had not come to exchange pleasantries. But it was not easy to complain in the face of such a disarming welcome. He was a lonely man, missing the easy comradeship of his army pals. Drinking the proffered tea he realised that a hot drink had much to recommend it on a cold day. Still, he had to deliver his message. “Miss Thomas,” he began, “This stuff you’ve been putting out for the fox . . .” “Biscuits?” she offered. Then, realising what he had said, “What fox?” He explained, pointing to the track. “Oh dear me” she sympathised, “Wouldn’t it be better, in that case, if you put something in your garden – so it wouldn’t need to cross your lawn to get to mine. Do you think dog food would be best? Could you, perhaps, pick up a few tins? They would be too heavy for me but you could manage them easily. I really don’t like the idea of the fox being hungry –

or of it getting the hens.” The Major, to his surprise, since he was not interested in either foxes or hens, heard himself agreeing. He bought cheap left overs scraps from his regular butcher – no sense in wasting money. He put down the food for a few mornings, then went across to let Jane know he had done his bit. She produced tea. Neither of them had much to say but it was nice, all the same, to exchange a few words. Eventually, he found the courage to say, “It’s my turn now. Will you let me get you a drink?” “Thank you, that’s most kind.” “The Flying Kettle then. I’ll collect you this evening.” Jane’s eyes opened wide in dismay. She was about to explain that she never drank alcohol and certainly didn’t patronise pubs. Then she remembered that she never went anywhere, except for groceries, and any outing was better than none. Telling herself it would be rude to refuse she accompanied the Major nervously to the Flying Kettle and found it warm and welcoming. Sipping a chaste lemonade she chatted happily, reflecting that this was much better than watching the telly alone. Jane Thomas and the Major are still friends – and still disagreeing about almost everything. But that doesn’t seem to matter. He always brings her heavy shopping home. Sometimes she cooks him a meal or he treats her to one at the pub. The hens still strut around unmolested while the fox grows fat and lazy on the Major’s butcher’s left overs. The hedgehog, contentedly munching through his ample supply of earthworms remains quite unaware of being a catalyst. Would you like to submit a short story? Cooling the flames of mental health for children by FIONA CLARK, Transformational Energy Expert, The Zenergizer One of the biggest gifts we can give our children is the ability to understand their emotions, and know what to do when they feel worried, anxious or overwhelmed. We are more aware than ever before that mental health is growing within our younger generations and lockdown has done nothing to reduce those levels. I have been working with children for the last 14 years and have taught many children simple yet effective techniques they can use to leave anger, frustration and anxiety behind and embrace calm, let go of sadness, overwhelm and worry and feel happy and confident. I believe by guiding children from a young age to know how to process the ‘energy’ of emotions they experience we are giving them precious life-long skills that will enable them to thrive. Communication is an art and one we want our children to learn to use effectively so they feel safe and secure enough to express how they feel otherwise emotions and feelings become suppressed and hidden, sometimes for many years which has an effect on adult life and relationships. As a single mother I often felt very challenged, irritable and sometimes I struggled to cope and these were always the occasions when my boys were more unsettled within themselves and struggled to express their emotions, and frankly I realised my behaviour had a huge impact on them. Effective communication was definitely not happening, creating a very stressful environment between all of us. I understood for them to feel safe and secure as a parent I needed to be ‘present’ with them, communicate effectively and listen, and often listen to what wasn’t being said! I want to share with you the A, B, C, of Reconnecting to your Zenergy so that children can have a way of acknowledging how they feel, change those feelings and feel confident and happy within themselves. By the way parents, you can do this too! So, let me explain first what I mean by Zenergy? Zenergy is a combination of living in a high vibe energy state with a balance of calm. Follow these 3 steps to take you from a place of stress and anxiety to a place of calm and presence.

lifeinmagazines.co.uk

A – Awareness. A feeling in your body will always be your stress messenger. Whether you feel tension in your shoulders, neck, a headache or that fuzzy feeling in your stomach. Maybe you clench your hands or your jaw. Asking children to identify what ‘feeling’ is going on inside their body allows them to start recognising the signs of stress and anxiety. B – Breathe. When we are feeling stressed, anxious or overwhelmed we tend to take short breaths from the upper part of our body which is activating the stress response and putting the body into the fight and flight response. Consciously take long deep breaths from the lower part of your stomach in for the count of 5 and breathe out for the count of 10. Do this for 5 or 6 breaths until you start to feel calmer. C – Change state. Tap with the flat of your hand under the collar bones and on the upper part of the chest as you continue to take those long deep breaths. These points are known as K27 ‘energy points’, or acupressure points. By tapping your hand on these points you are calming down the stress response in the body, boosting the immune system and bringing the body into a place of harmony again. Continue to follow these 3 steps until your children and of course you, start to feel calmer, confident, and happier. Stress, overwhelm and anxiety is not the biggest problem we have, the problem is what we do about it. What solutions can we explore and what can we do right here in this moment to return to a place of inner peace, calm, confidence and true happiness. To cool the flames of mental health we each have a responsibility to share with our children from as young an age as possible to recognise, accept and process emotions so that they do not get stored in the memory bank of the body to repeatedly show up in another pair of shoes later down the line. Here’s a link to a video where you can follow this simple but effective practise: https://youtu.be/9L8c4Xkk3nM www.fionaclark.co.uk
