FRONT PAGE STORY April is Month of the Military Child (MOMC), a time to applaud the kids who show amazing support and understanding towards the military and their families. They have the courage to experience situations that civilian families don’t encounter and turn them into lifelong memories. They epitomize what it means to have a strong foundation through their lifetime achievements and patience in handling the unexpected.

To show our appreciation, all military branches of the nation come together to wear the color purple. This color was chosen because it is the combination of Army Green, Air Force Blue, Coast Guard Blue, Marine Red and Navy Blue, exemplifying the gratitude that the entire military as a whole have for these amazing individuals. Maxwell extends an invitation for everyone to wear the color purple and attend the

Golf. It’s a good time to talk about it as golf tournaments at the local and professional level kick off. Personally, I wasn’t naturally drawn to the game of golf, but on occasion movies like Happy Gilmore and The Greatest Game Ever Played peaked my interest.

However, after using every excuse I could muster (i.e. not having golf clubs, not having the right attire, etc.), it was an Air Force friend that introduced me to the game of golf. She convinced me it would be a perfect hobby for my husband and I to take up together.

Our day of golf would live in notoriety for several reasons. The first reason being it was actually fun. There’s nothing more addicting than hearing the crack of the golf ball as it sails across the fairway. You will chase the perfect drive or the dream of a hole in one and it will continue to bring you back to the golf course. The second reason is the opportunity to bond with my husband over a sport that was new to both of us. Although his amateur swings did send a closed pinecone smack dab into by forehead, the lovely goose egg I had for the rest of the day was a reminder that we were together. Lastly, my initial excuses

to not go are now one of my main reasons to return. Days after my trip, I found myself in the Ladies Golf Attire section and even scouting out private lessons so that I could show my husband up the next time we played golf.

What’s the point of all this?

You are in the heart of one of the most beautiful golf courses here in Alabama. Cypress Tree Golf Course is a forgiving course that’s great for beginners. Our incredible staff can assist with everything from professional lessons to advice on equipment and attire. You can take the game at your pace. Start out on the driving range or the practice green to increase your comfort on the course. When you’re done with play, come and enjoy some refreshing food and drinks at the Two Putts Bar & Grill.

If golf doesn't appeal to you, do not fear. The 42 FSS has a jam packed summer. We’ve got a wonderful 4th of July bash on the horizon, Aviation pool will be open, and our ITT office is waiting to help you plan your summer vacation, especially if it’s at Disney. Think you can make a leap of faith? You and a certified instructor will jump from an elevation of 10,000 feet for an experience you won’t forget.

Airmen will need an AF Form 4391 completed by leadership prior to the event in order to participate. Participants can sign-up for a jump time between 8am-4pm at the ODR office and provide their own transportation to Skydive the South in Tuskegee, AL. Cost for Single Airman is $50 and $80 for all others.

COLORBLAST 5K

This fun, vibrant 5k is a non-competitive race and is open to people of all ages. Be prepared to be doused from head to toe in color! Register by April 13 to get a guaranteed t-shirt in your race packet. Packet pick-up and sign-ins begin at 8am and the race begins at 9am. The route will start at the Cypress Tree Golf Course and take you along the Alabama River on the River Run Trail. Cost is $20 per person or $50 for families of three or more.

Have you ever looked around at those in uniform and think “I want to do what they do?” Teen Aviation Camp gives you the opportunity to tour the Air Force Academy, take part in simulations and rope courses, and experience what it means to be an Air Force Cadet. Looking to be the next soccer star? Use the month of April to sign up for British Soccer Camp and be taught by some of the best! Learn how to increase your skills through fun and competitive lessons from June 4-8. Cost varies and the first step to being a part of the action begins by registering at challengersports.com.

Shoot for the stars by being a part of this 6-day Space Camp where you’ll get to learn all sorts of nifty information. Ages 12-18 will be invited to go to Huntsville and join in simulated space shuttle missions, rocket building and launches, and other exciting experiments. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity!

If you’re looking for a way to enjoy the outdoors and avoid the summer heat all in one, then your search is over! Maxwell Aviation Cadet Pool welcomes friends and family to enjoy the benefits of a refreshing swim at the poolside for all ages. Children can enjoy the sprays of water shooting from the ground or falling from above at the splash pad. There are also swim lessons offered throughout the summer to get the kids from splashing in the shallow end to diving into 9 feet of water with ease. Already know how to swim? Children with military ID ages 11-13 can get Fish Passes that allow them to be identified as proficient swimmers and enjoy the pool unattended. If you’re looking for a bit more action, join the youth swim team and test your skills by competing with your friends. Those wanting exercise are provided with the opportunity of lap swimming beginning at 11:30am before the pool begins their open swim times at 1pm. Want the pool to yourself? Reservations can be made to host private parties to celebrate special events or just to be surrounded by people of your choosing for up to three hours.

At any point that you need a break from the water, the Aviation Cadet Pool provides set areas for relaxing while enjoying a snack or cool beverage. A daily pass to the pool costs $5 or season passes can be purchased anywhere from $75-$125.

Since joining the lodging team in 1995, Betty McCall has shown the dedication and determination it takes to take great customer service and apply it to every aspect of her job. She oversees building 1409 of University Inn where she manages 162 rooms, including the distinguished visitors’ quarters. With great leadership skills, she has set an example for what it means to be a successful and inspirational worker. Thanks to the outstanding service that she and her team provide, her efforts are acknowledged through customer comment ratings that exceed 97%.

Betty McCall’s excellent service doesn’t end with the University Inn. When not at work, she helps direct the Montgomery Giant Midgets, a Montgomery Youth Football League. Her responsibilities include setting up fundraisers, administrative tasks, and other special functions. She even makes time to be an organizer for Carver High School football teams.

In his spare time, Rickey is a gardener. His passion is clear for people to see as he talks about his plant growth or shares his vegetables with others. You can witness his affection for projects in which he puts in maximum effort as there’s always a giant smile on his face.

STARTING OVER AGAIN - MOVING DAY RELOCATION ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE Being a military member means a constant change of residency, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a difficult transition. Maxwell offers a wonderful tool called the Relocation Program that reduces the stress that comes with moving and helps get new individuals to where they need to go. Whether you’re relocating to another base, another state, or even another country, there are many decisions that will need to be made either before leaving or arriving at a new duty location.

The program will provide assistance, counseling, sponsorship training, education, and referrals throughout all phases of the relocation process. Before you even start packing, tools are supplied to help manage the move through locating property, cost estimation, or setting up a calendar.

Workshops, briefings, or one-on-one consultation could be provided for further assistance in financial purchases to lessen the complexity of the transition. While your personal items are being transferred from one location to the other, settling-in services are available for things such as dishes or other household items. Working through sites such as Military OneSource, they’ll help you find just the right spot to call home and get you settled comfortably.
