The result was the formation of a non-profit Colorado Title 32 Special District. That organization, the Southern Teller County Health Services District, still governs the operation of the Cripple Creek Care Center today. Today, under the Board members’ management, and the leadership of the Center’s Nursing Home Administrator, Lori Stewart (MSM), Cripple Creek Care Center still lets dedication to Community, Family, and Independence guide its operations.

On the nursing staff, Barb Szendrey, RN, exemplifies this dedication. She has been part of the family at CCCC for more than 22 years. Her care and concern for residents is shown not only through her years of nursing service, but also through her loving understanding and knowledge of each of them as individuals.

Starting as a CNA, Office Manager Jo Ann Kincaid has also been with the Center family more than 20 years. Whether she is helping someone plan their spending for a Family Dollar shopping trip, or long time staffer, Susan Amiot (HR) is helping someone find a special book or magazine, or Housekeeping Director, Lois Mace, is helping a resident tune in their favorite TV show, the entire staff interacts directly with the residents in many ways each day.

During the past four years, the Board has undertaken tens of thousands of dollars of capital improvements at the facility, starting with safety and service issues: a new boiler system, upgraded plumbing and electrical services (including one of the largest backup power generators in the County), installation of a WanderGuard system, and a fully upgraded, commercially compliant kitchen.

A total interior remodel of residents’, common, and staff areas has just been completed, including wall and floor finishes and all furnishings.

Cheyenne Place helps families in need of quality care

C

huck and Jeannette King were married Dec. 25, 1943. For 56 years, they have overcome many of life’s challenges.

On May 23, 2000, both of their lives would be transformed in a way they would never imagine.

“I remember it so clearly that night. Jeannette awakes me to help her to the restroom as her left leg seemed to be asleep,” Chuck says. As the sirens approach he makes the assumptions that the damage has been done.

As the King family huddled together at the hospital they are informed that Jeannette suffered a major stroke impairing her vision, left leg and left arm. During an 8-to-10 week rehabilitation stint, Chuck avidly participates in his wife’s progress and his son and daughter in-law revamp their house to make it wheelchair accessible. As Chuck and Jeannette work together to make their house a home again, the realization came that the care and safety needs for Jeannette were not being met.

Chuck and his family had to search for a senior community that not only was able to assist Jeannette and allow her to have a quality of life, but allow Chuck to be independent.

Creating lists of wants and needs drilled down complexes and the necessity to be within walking distance allowed for the word continuum of care campus to linger in the air. The family gathered information on a campus that could house

Chuck being independent and Jeannette needing skilled care.

Finding a continuum of care campus would prove to be easier than one thought.

As the family’s search narrowed down, Cheyenne Place would be the place for Chuck as he could be

independent as much as he wanted but still get meals and housekeeping when needed and Cheyenne Mountain Care Center was a facility were Jeannette could have 24-hour nursing care and safety needed to help her with the quality of life she had been missing.

With the buildings being so close,

Chuck is able to walk over in the morning to feed his wife as the staff of Cheyenne Place hold breakfast for him and walk over in the evening after he is fed to help feed his wife and accompany her to bed. This, in Chuck’s eyes, was the best life he could imagine for him and his lovely wife. The King family was able to see their loved ones enjoy the quality of life they deserved.

On April 23, 2010, Chuck and his family were able to spend the remaining time Jeannette had next to her, in the presence of Cheyenne Mountain Care Center’s caring staff.

Jeannette and Chuck were blessed with 66 years together, memories that were priceless and at approximately 6 p.m.

Jeannette was able to leave her life knowing her family was there and Chuck would continue on with the care he may someday need.

State Veterans Community Living Centers — Homes for the Brave

S

ome things in life define us.

Virtually everyone who has served our great country says their time in the military changed their life in some way. Those common, shared experiences create a sense of camaraderie that usually last a life time.

When a veteran is in need of short-term rehabilitation or long term care, the camaraderie found at any of the five Colorado Veterans Community Living Centers is one of the key elements that sets us apart. We provide care to veterans (both war time and peace time), spouses and widows of veterans, and Gold Star parents – period.

That means everyone living at any of the Colorado Veterans Living Community Centers have something significant in common.

Directly related to the population we serve is the attitude essentially all of our staff come to work with every day. Don’t get me wrong here - everybody deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

But it is important to note staff members from every department here come to work each day with the attitude that they are “caring for America’s heroes.”

That knowledge and attitude appropriately effects how staff interacts with the men and women living in the Colorado Veterans Community Living Centers. The level of respect is greater. We are very

particular about who we hire. We look for and hire the best trained, competent people who also have a genuine appreciation for the brave men and women who have served.

We take pride not only in who we provide care to but also how that care is provided. Here at the Bruce McCandless Colorado Veterans Living Center at Florence, we have a very

active resident population that meets regularly to discuss and decide everything to meals, outings, entertainment, remodeling projects, grant application ideas, how to welcome new neighbors and more!

We have been long-standing members of the Eden Alternative – a non-profit organization that educates caregivers how to provide care in a more home

like environment.

As a matter of fact, we were the very first State Veterans Home out of 151 locations in the nation to join the Eden Registry!

What that means for the men and women living here is that we are accustomed to honoring their individual choices, seeking their input and opinions, and implementing their ideas whenever feasible.

Moving yourself or a loved one into a short- or long-term care environment means the start of a new phase of life.

Change any time can be difficult, and sometimes people fear needing care will also mean losing their independence and their voice.

We understand those fears, and we are happy to report that much of the time, new residents say they have discovered a renewed sense of purpose soon after moving into our community.
