hen they hit the airwaves of American radio in the early
60s, the scrawny Liverpool teens had a number of things going for them: the essential musical “ear,” lyrical language, instruments they played well for their age, rockin’ rhythm, and perhaps greatest of all, that shiny floppy hair that caused young girls around the world to swoon. They called themselves The Beatles and changed music forever. We seniors (disclaimer: writer is 76!) still remember the words and music to this day and can still “shake our tail feathers” when bands play a Beatles tune. These days, some of those tunes are still requested when 15-year-old Hallie Nolder puts on a show for numerous senior residences. Nolder is an aspiring one-person

Performing, writing are life for Green Mountain Falls woman By Natalie Minasian
M
odenia Joy is one of those characters that is larger than life. Even now, when she enters a room, all eyes turn to her. She’s done rope tricks at county fairs, written novels, performed one-woman plays and pranced in Bronc Day parades adorned in period costumes. She hails from eastern Oklahoma. At a young age, Modenia married John Kramer, gave birth to four sons and was the dutiful wife, moving to wherever he was employed. John worked for Gulf Oil in Oklahoma until he took a job in Southern California. Every other year when the boys were young, they’d pack up and spend the summer at their cabin in Green Mountain Falls. John’s grandfather, K.C. Jones (yes, from Kansas City) had originally built the cabin way back when. In time, John inherited the property. The cabin was renamed Kramer’s Korner and renovated under Modenia’s direction. A very narrow kitchen was expanded into a large eat-in country kitchen and the ‘water closet’ was made into a real nice bathroom. It has a big ol’ fireplace. No central heat or air, but it’s still comfortable enough in the summer. Long summers in the Pikes Peak region inspired Modenia to write. She wrote a charming book, “Mother’s Memories,” in poem and picture form about her sons’ growing up years. She also wrote “Lilly Going West – A Young Woman’s Journey”, described as bringing a breath of fresh air to Westerns, and also a historical novel trilogy, “Melinda Ann,” “ Secrets of Kingsley Mansion” and “The Orchard-Kingsley Brothers – End of the Line.”

Once her sons were older, the Kramers came to their mountain getaway every summer. John and Modenia became grand marshals of the Bronc Day Parade, the biggest summer event in Green Mountain Falls. Many times she’s won Bronc Days’ best costume contest, (beating out her son every single time). Cherry on the cake is their hosting a potluck Hill Party - inviting friends and family to the cabin every year on the Saturday before Bronc Day. It
started out with four guests and now about 60 attend. Three sons opted to stay in California, but her second oldest, Sid, loved to spend his summers in Colorado. He thoroughly enjoyed “roughing” it and getting into the Western lifestyle. He worked the “gold” panning booth and transformed himself into an authentic mountain man/miner at Bronc Day. Now at age 61, he’s perfected both costume and character.
John and Modenia were happily married for 61 years when he passed away in 2016. Her last book, “SunriseSunset,” is dedicated to his memory. Modenia admits she had to figure out at that point who she was – no longer someone’s daughter, no longer a wife, no longer a mother of young sons. The year after, she suffered two strokes and calls her recovery a miracle. After the hospital stay, seven angelic women helped her regain movement and learn to speak again. She praises God for her complete recovery. At age 85, Modenia’s latest creative adventure involves women of the Bible. Along with Christian women friends in Oxnard, each notable biblical woman is researched. Removing the ‘thees’ and ‘thous’ they write a script, creating a short dramatic presentation surrounding that woman’s story. Three presenters and one narrator perform these plays in costume at churches, before religious groups and at schools. You are in for a treat because Modenia has written a short play about Lot’s wife, and she will present it at the 9:30 a.m. service of St. David of the Hills Episcopal Church, 36 Edlowe Road in Woodland Park, on Sunday, Aug. 26.

Dear Marci, I need a hospital bed in my home. How can I get it covered by Medicare? Jack (Portland, ME) Dear Jack, Hospital beds are covered by Medicare as Durable Medical Equipment (DME). In order to get Medicare to cover your DME, whether you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must meet the following two conditions: 1.Your doctor or primary care provider (PCP) must sign an order, prescription, or certificate after a face-to-face visit. a. In this document, your PCP must state that the required office visit occurred, that you need the hospital bed to help a medical condition or injury, and that the equipment is for home use. b. Your face-to-face visit must take place no more than six months before the prescription is written. 2. Once you have your doctor or PCP’s order or prescription, you must take it to the right supplier to get coverage. Be sure to only use suppliers with approval from Original Medicare or your Medicare Advantage Plan. If you have Original Medicare, the type of supplier you use depends on where you live and the type of equipment you need. • If you live in a competitive bidding area, Original Medicare only covers certain DME items from a select group of suppliers, known as contract

Competitive bidding is a program designed to lower DME costs and improve DME quality in certain parts of the country. • If you do not live in a competitive bidding area, or the item you need is not part of the program, you should get your DME from a Medicare-approved supplier that takes assignment. Taking assignment means that the provider accepts Medicare’s approved amount as full payment. For many Medicare-covered services, providers can only charge up to 15 percent above the Medicare-approved amount—this is known as the limiting charge. DME is not subject to a limiting charge, so if you get your hospital bed from a supplier who does not take assignment, the supplier could bill you for the entire balance of your item in excess of Medicare’s approved amount. You can call 1-800-MEDICARE to learn if you are affected by the competitive bidding program and to find a contract supplier or supplier who takes assignment. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must follow the plan’s rules for getting DME. Your plan may require that you: • Receive approval from the plan before getting your hospital bed • Use a supplier in the plan’s network of suppliers - You may get little or no coverage if you use an out-of-network supplier. • Use a preferred brand - You may pay a higher cost when using a
non-preferred brand. People with Medicare Advantage Plans are not affected by competitive bidding. Contact your plan to learn more about its DME coverage rules before ordering your DME. -Marci

One of the employees drives the Ferrari into the bank’s underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the wealthy man returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $23.07. The loan officer says, “Sir, we’re very happy to have had your business, and this transaction worked out very nicely, but we’re all a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and discovered that you’re a multimillionaire. 4 c pitted and halved Northwest sweet cherries 2 c water

3 T lavender 2 T sugar 6 Northwest sweet cherries with stems 6 sprigs lavender blossoms In small saucepan, combine cherries, water, lavender and sugar. Heat mixture until it begins to boil. Remove from heat and allow mixture to cool completely. Strain and reserve liquid. For each drink, combine 4 ounces cherry-lavender mixture and 4 ounces crushed ice in tall 12-ounce cocktail glass; top each with club soda. Garnish each drink with one cherry with stem and one sprig lavender blossoms. Variation: To make alcoholic version, shake or stir strained cherry-lavender mixture and ice with 9 ounces vodka. Strain into 8-ounce martini glasses, top each with club soda and garnish each with one cherry with stem and one sprig lavender blossoms.
Roasted Cherry Sauce Makes: 1 cup
2 c pitted Northwest sweet cherries 2/3 c sugar 2 t cornstarch 1/8 t salt 1/8 t black pepper Heat oven to 400 F. On foil-lined baking sheet, combine cherries, sugar, cornstarch, salt and black pepper; toss to mix. Place in oven and roast until cherries start to release juices and become soft, about 10 minutes. When we practice loving and democracy, we recognize that conformity doesn’t trump diversity. that “absolute truth cannot be known with certainty, and therefore allows for diversity, tolerance, openness to change and room for error” (www. intime.uni.edu). To give up the idea of “one right answer” and the illusion of “winning” allows us to respect each others’ rights to our opinions. The smallest circumstance counts: where to eat, what movie to see, how to hang a picture. When we practice loving and democracy, we recognize that conformity doesn’t trump diversity. When we don’t like what’s expressed, our Constitution and good communication between partners says we can
say our piece. Maybe part of what keeps us believing in love and democracy is that more than one idea can lead to better solutions. In relationships, even if one person’s solution isn’t literally better, showing respect for each other’s suggestions is better for the relationship in the long run. Trust increases when we feel respected and listened to. Despite the challenges of practicing loving and democracy, we are steadfast in both. Both are imperfect states of being, no matter how hard we try. Both are great dreams with high ideals. Without loving, life is barren. Without democracy, we lose our liberty. Loving and democracy are both worth fighting for. Be a voice for the forgotten By Kay Owen-Larson “Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing, to declare that God is upright; He is my Rock, and there is not unrighteousness in Him.” Psalm 92:13-15 I am a missionary to one of the most forgotten people groups in America. You might be shocked and surprised to find that the group I work with are the residents of our communities’ care centers. The generation that was called the “Great Generation” is now called the “Forgotten Generation.” Did you know that almost 85 percent of the residents of our care centers nationwide do not have regular visitors. They are lonely, depressed and wonder where God is. They often feel neglected, forgotten and abandoned by families, friends and society at large but they should not be forgotten. Sister Teresa, while visiting a nursing home in America made this statement, “There is a pain, far worse than hunger or poverty; it is the pain of being
rejected.” The Lord’s heart is touched by the plight of the elderly in our nation and what touches His heart should touch ours. We should ask ourselves this question, “What am I doing to reach out in love to the elderly?” So many need Christ as their Savior and there is no one to tell them. My heart is to “love on” as many of those as I can in this wonderful group while there is still time. The elderly have led exciting and adventurous lives and there are many things we can learn from them. A100-year-old man who lives in a local care center said to me, “Where are all the children? I have so many stories to tell and no one to tell them to.” Our elders enjoy having visitors, but they especially love to be visited by children with whom they can share some of their life stories. We all lead full and busy lives, but the day will come when all of us will need extra love and special attention. Remember, what we sow is what we reap ... what are you sowing? “Rise in the presence of the aged. Show respect for the elderly and revere your God.” Leviticus 19:32.
