Take a May field trip to the May Natural History Museum Story and photos by Carol Thompson

I

f you are driving south on Highway 115 and see a giant black and white Hercules Beetle on your right, you should turn right at the next street Rock Creek Canyon Road. Then, you can treat yourself to one of Colorado Springs most fascinating, interesting and beautiful (yes, beautiful), privatelyowned collections of the world.

The James May Natural History Museum is a meticulously-preserved collection of insects from all over the world and includes items rare, endangered, extinct and lovely, including the flashing endangered blue morpho butterfly and the rarest Queen Alexandra’s birdwing butterfly from New Guinea.

You will thank your lucky stars you live in Colorado after viewing the 18-inch stick insect (they can grow up to 22 inches) or the venomous scorpion mother who carries her babies on her back. Check out another mother, the praying mantis, who is seen eating her mate after he has fulfilled his reproductive duties. There is one live exhibit, a black widow spider with the red hourglass figure on her back. She is a good mother, who produces two or three egg sacs a year, but the babies lack discipline - they eat each other up until only one survives! At the end of the season, she is let go. When she dies, the red spot disappears.

The incredibly beautiful moths, butterflies, grasshoppers’ wings and beetles could be used as jewelry, especially the gold beetle (it looks like 24 karat) and the all silver one. My particular favorites are the black witch moths and the cecropia moths, both of which can be seen occasionally in Colorado when the warm storms of the south blow them in our direction. Of course, many of you will remember the influx of painted lady butterflies late last summer. The hordes actually could be seen on radar and you could count five or six on one flower.

Recent technology has discovered these flying insects actually use weather as part of their transitions to new fields.

Flying upwards to 1,500 feet, they catch the prevailing winds according to their inner compass on which direction to go. They can fly hundreds of miles in just a few days. Perhaps this is why the lovely black and yellow lace Mourning Cloak butterflies are the last to leave Colorado and the first to return in the early spring.

I was fortunate to interview Lou, the lovely granddaughter of the founder of the museum, James May. Nothing about this museum is ordinary, including the history of the family. This is the fifth generation of the May family to run the nonprofit museum and campground.

British born Edward May was a collector of insect specimens during the time of Darwin. He and many others were charged with collecting and identifying insects from around the world. Thus, every missionary, merchant, adventurer who left the country would send back samples carefully wrapped in triangular pieces of newspaper, then boxed carefully so as not to be damaged in transit for the royal collection. This followed a rigid method of preservation which is still in use today.

That is why some of the items found in this museum are over 100 years old. Edward then moved his family to Brazil, where he ultimately contracted

malaria and died. His son James carried on the collecting tradition for his father, including his traveling. This took James ultimately to South Africa where he was caught up in the Second Boer War. During this war, James was wounded and left for dead before being rescued by members of the Zulu tribe. The Zulu, dead set against the Boers for taking over their lands, were in favor of the British, so they took James to a British aid station where he was given treatment and a long convalescence that enabled him to begin his own private collection.

James ultimately moved, married and sired three sons. The eldest, John, had a natural flair for doing things and learned to make airtight cabinets from an old German cabinetmaker. He was just 13 years old when the collection first toured Canada and then the northern U.S. Although this was during the Great Depression, the people flocking to see the collection donated small amounts that kept the family afloat.

As they traveled, they passed through Colorado and decided this would be a perfect place for a museum thanks to the low humidity. Colorado also hasn’t many native insects that attack wood, like termites, so grandmother Vicky May bought 180 acres during World War II. John continued his creative talents, making his own cement bricks to begin work on the museum.

He had started his own family by this time, and continued showing his collections at flower shows, stock shows, state fairs and any place that seemed like it would draw a crowd. By this time he bought an old truck trailer, piled the glass and wood trays into a collapsible cabinet he had invented and took the whole family around the country along with his

“It was a great way to grow up. He’d unload the displays, collapse the cabinet and we’d live in the trailer,” Lou says.

The museum started out as a tropical display, since people here had never seen such incredible insects. With over 100,000 items in the collection, most are still foreign in origin although some are from the United States. This is a notable museum, not only for its wide variety of insects but also because it has the distinction of having told Walt Disney “no” when he offered to buy it.

Disney had been building his theme parks and toured the May collection with John May in the mid-1950s. Disney made an offer on the entire collection but would not agree to keep the James May Collection name. John felt it was important to keep his father’s legacy intact, so he turned down the offer.

The Mays decided to open a branch of the museum about this time at a vacation hotspot in Florida, called Weeki Wachee Springs resort. The gigantic Hercules beetle was built for the resort, but the damp weather and local bugs began attacking

Bees, butterflies, flies, moths, grasshoppers, all have their place in the production of our foodstuffs. Lou’s philosophy is that the earth heals itself if we leave it alone.

“Even the beetle destroying our pine trees have natural predators if we give them time,” she said.

To increase habitat for butterflies and moths and bees, grow flowers like lilac, milkweed, butterfly bush, flowering shrubs and trees and provide shallow containers of water with pebbles or rocks for them to land on while getting a drink. They need something to rest on while drinking and eating.

The proboscis of the butterfly extracts nutrients for them while their wings continue to flutter. This fluttering actually contracts pollen which the carry to the next flower.

Butterflies and moths undergo the most fascinating five stages of change from adult to egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly or moth.

“Each change is interesting to watch. We simply must not kill them and must allow some part of our outdoor space to encourage their growth,” Lou said. “Use natural processes whenever possible. I am a big fan of ladybugs which I purchase by the hundreds at most garden stores.”

Recently, the museum has been updated and is now handicapped accessible, with larger bathroom doors and ramps. The James May Natural History Museum is open May 1 through Oct. 1.

may also pay an additional dollar for a daily fishing permit in their Rainbow Trout stocked lakes. Daily camping rates are: no hookup $37, electric/ water $39, full hookup $43, deluxe $52. Plus tax, of course.

To tour the museum, rates are $7 adults (ages 13-59); $6 (ages 60-plus); $5 (ages 6-12). Active military receive a 10 percent discount, as do groups of 10 or more.

umping in the car for a road trip can evoke nostalgia for a past era in travel — think sightseeing vacations in the family station wagon.

Luckily, you can add some classic Americana to your next trip through Colorado by visiting the numerous unique — and sometimes kooky — sights across the state. These lasting relics are perfect for photo ops and tourist bucket lists.

UFO Watchtower, Hooper On a trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, take a detour on State Highway 17 — also called the Cosmic Highway by extraterrestrial buffs — for a chance to spot a UFO. In actuality the watchtower is a 10-foot-tall viewing platform that takes advantage of the remote area’s high elevation. Pass the time with your eyes on the sky, checking out the Healing Garden or even camping on site.

Antique Washing Machine Museum, Eaton Not too far from Fort Collins, avid collector Lee Maxwell has gathered more than 1,000 vintage washing machines, many of which he’s restored to working condition. Dozens of brands and types are represented, along with other old-school household appliances like dishwashers, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. To see the museum, though, you’ll have to arrange for a tour by phone or email.

Co-owners Jim and Daphne Myers have dedicated their store in Bailey to all things Bigfoot, selling not only camping, hiking and fishing supplies (handy for those plotting a stakeout in the forest), but also squatchy swag like T-shirts, signs and mugs. Plus, they’ve opened the onsite Sasquatch Encounter Discovery Museum, where you can learn about sightings. After you’ve snapped a photo with the life-sized Sasquatch replica, head down the road to the Coney Island Boardwalk, an iconic roadside hot dog stand that makes an ideal pit stop.

Forty feet long and weighing more than 600 pounds, the aluminum fork is an art display that was specifically built by the owners of a restaurant and rental cabins to beat out the size of another fork in Springfield, Missouri.

Project Healing Waters reels in results with disabled, active vets

New unit at St. Francis

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. (PHWFF) is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing.

The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization originated at Walter Reed Amy Medical Center in Washington, D.C. in 2005. Now, there are more than 206 operational programs serving disabled vets and military personnel from all 50 states and Germany.

Injuries PHWFF participants are coping with are post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, lost range of motion and other injuries suffered while serving the country.

The local program includes around 200 volunteers that serve approximately 400 veterans, according to Andy Koloski, assistant program lead for Project Healing Waters. Of those, roughly 40 percent of the veterans and a third of the volunteers are over the age of 50.

in Summit County, even Wyoming along with a slew of other places, Koloski said. Those trips include single or multiday excursions. Day outings often include breakfast in route, fishing until lunch time, a picnic or barbecue and then more fishing until around 4 p.m.

During the offseason, PHWFF offers 17 weeks of classes from fly tying to rod building and fly casting.

The organization also hosts a veterans meeting every month.

“We’re very active year-round with these activities,” Koloski said.

Charitable donations and multiple sponsorships enable the organization to serve veterans and military personnel and not charge a dime.

Participants are equipped to become life-long fly fishing anglers and are given a rod, reel, line and accessories.

Donations and volunteers are always welcome, Koloski added.

“You don’t have to be a fly fishing expert to help,” Koloski said. “We have people that help with transportation or help cook.”

Since 2007, the Colorado Springs branch of PHWFF has grown into one of the largest of the 206 programs because of the close ties to the military community. The local program has seen an 600 percent increase in participants since 2013.

PHWFF has a presence at Fort Carson with the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit, Koloski mentioned.

The organization has also partnered with the Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center and has had an office space there since January.

“We have seen an increase getting the message out about the program from just foot traffic alone,” Koloski said.

He was already an avid fly fisherman, but discovered a new joy of teaching the sport to veterans.

Koloski, who attended West Point, found out about Project Healing Waters and immediately wanted to volunteer.

“A month later, I was teaching Vietnam Veterans, guys the age of my dad, to fly fish for the first time,” he said. “It was really cool.”

Granted, there are those who are impaired so they cannot separate thoughts and feelings from action and will act on their feelings without regard for self or others.

But for most of us regular folks (and we can all be impulsive), we can look at our feelings and thoughts, and trust ourselves to choose what to do.

Our thoughts and feelings then become free for the experiencing.

A Mother’s Day tribute

A

s I think about Mother’s Day coming up, I can’t help but think about my own mom. My mom was a strong, independent and caring mom.

That is not to say, we didn’t have our differences, we did. I think most daughters and moms have their times of discord.

But today, I would like to focus on the great mom that I was privileged to have in my life.

I always knew that my mom loved me unconditionally. She was always there for me in the good, bad and the awful. She was a fierce protector of her children and those that she loved.

She was loyal to a fault.

She worked very hard in the post-depression days to help provide for her family. She did many jobs including being a welder in the ship yard in Savannah, GA during WW2 when most men were overseas fighting.

She loved to cook, it was her favorite hobby in life. She always

remembered her children’s and grandchildren’s favorite meals and would prepare all of them when she knew they were coming.

I have her cookbooks still and really enjoy leafing through them and having a good laugh at her notes.

She later became a nurse and continued in that line of work until retirement.

After retirement, she and my dad began a ministry to those residing in nursing homes. She continued in that ministry until she had a massive stroke.

Even after her stroke, when she was unable to walk, talk or eat, she still tried to minister to those around her by holding their hand, sometimes kissing their hands and doing her best to communicate to others that God loved them.

She is my hero! She has been gone for many years and I love and miss her to this day. I pray you have a mother in your life that you love and appreciate and if you have that privilege, be sure to convey that to them.

To all our moms out there, receive our thanks and love today for all you do. You are a gift from God and we appreciate you.

A Great Place to Grow: Community Gardens

ooking for a way to get meet new friends, get a little exercise and maybe help your community? If so, check out the nearest community garden.

Since 2008, Pikes Peak Urban Gardens has helped locals establish start-up plots throughout the Pikes Peak region. Some of the area’s 16 community gardens are managed by PPUG, while others are managed by separate neighborhood groups.

Locations can be found throughout El Paso County. On the city’s west side, for example, you’ll find options like Vermijo and Harrison Urban Gardens or the Westside Community Gardens. Westside is especially handy for those who use a wheelchair, offering wider garden paths and 30-inch high planting boxes. In southwest Colorado Springs, new gardeners can learn techniques at the Harlan Wolfe Ranch – or develop a 20-foot by 20-foot boxed plot at Charmaine Nymann Community Garden at Bear Creek Regional Park.

And first-timers will find plenty of support. One of PPUG’s goals is to provide education. Newcomers can take classes or get on-site assistance from other gardeners. Each spring, for example, the organization’s founder and retiring president Larry Stebbins (aka “The Garlic Guy,” based on his 12-15 annual varieties) conducts a full

morning’s overview on building and preparing a garden plot, preparing the soil, nurturing plants and harvesting a bonanza. This year’s packed house at Horace Mann School not only learned from a pro, but got a chance to meet with knowledgeable local vendors.

In 2008 Stebbins, a former botany, chemistry and biology teacher and school administrator initially led the program under the Pikes Peak Community Foundation’s umbrella.

By 2016, however, he had formed a separate nonprofit whose mission was to build community gardens.

“You’re outside, always learning and you meet incredible people,” Stebbins explains. His own experience began after moving to Old Farm years ago. One day he saw an open garden gate across the street and walked in.

“A gentleman named Ernie was working and right away asked, ‘Where’s your hat?’”

Turned out Ernie was the garden’s manager. Stebbins decided to pay a $40 plot water fee and planted his own garden. The two men are still friends and discovered they’d both grown up within a mile of each other in Detroit – something they might never have known, had they not met in a community garden.

“I call a community garden a “third place,” he says, adding home and work are usually Place No. 1 and No.2. “For some the third place is church – or the corner bar. But for many of us, a community garden is a little like the TV show, ‘Cheers.’ It’s where everybody knows your name and why you came.”

There’s Dave, the Master Gardener in my area, Brenda, a former kindergarten teacher or Karen whose plot is across the way. We help each other out with watering or weeding if we’re going to be out of town,” she explains, adding that camaraderie has been a wonderful by-product.

But there’s more to Kay’s story. After a big harvest in 2011, she realized that she had raised more than she could use.

“Sometimes you trade veggies with other gardeners,” she explains. But the former teacher and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo docent, had another idea. “I began asking zoo commissary staffers, ‘What kind of produce did the zoo need for the animals?’ and “How much was the garden donating annually?’” Today organically raised produce donated by the BCGA has reduced food costs for the zoo with annual donations exceeding 3,500 pounds.

Of course Mother Nature can throw you a curve.

Colorado’s wind, hail and rugged weeds can be a challenge. Case in point: Just before harvest a couple of years ago – after months of soil work, planting, watering and volunteering – Emily and George Ulrich were ready to harvest a rich crop of kohlrabi, greens, peppers and tomatoes.

That year, however, the entire Bear Creek Charmaine Nymann garden was attacked by grasshoppers!

“It devastated everything in the garden. Fortunately we had more successful years. And community gardens do a lot of good. You can’t sell your extra produce, but you can give it to the zoo or to a local food bank.”

Rapid technological developments create innovative and exciting ways to battle these feelings of isolation, which can also help ward off depression.

VR technology can also be used in private homes with caregivers who have a loved one with dementia or a disease that impairs motor functioning. Caregivers can help care recipients stay cognitively engaged with various games or can visually transport them to another part of the world.

Brand new technology is currently in the works from a company called Embodied Labs that will allow caregivers to use VR to gain insight into what the world looks like with Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers hope this experience will increase empathy for the care recipient and ultimately reduce caregiver stress.

Over the last few years, VR has become more accessible and affordable, so taking advantage of this technology may not be as hard as you think. Smart phones are becoming an integral part of life, and owning one can be the first step to accessing the world of VR. Numerous companies sell the headsets that connect with smart phones, with various price tags.

Headsets through Amazon.com and Best Buy start as low as $29.99 and are compatible with Android and iOS

operating systems. After one purchases a headset, the app store can be used on a smart phone to search for hundreds of VR options.

Many of the apps are free or can be purchased for a few dollars. Google Earth is another option that allows you or a loved one to be virtually transported anywhere in the world.

Even though VR can unlock innovative ways to stay engaged with the world, bear in mind that nothing can replace actual connection.

Spending time with family and friends, going for a walk, reading a book, etc., are still the best ways of staying connected with the world.

Consider VR as a wonderful supplement to access activities or places you once enjoyed when doing them in the real world becomes difficult. Bon voyage!

Wheels of a Dream celebrated its second year anniversary with a cake celebration for its crew of volunteers.

The organization, started by school bus driver and woodworker Jim King, crafts wooden toys and distributes them to children staying in hospitals or going through troubled times. Wheels of a Dream has partnered with the Colorado Springs Police Department, TESSA, Safe Passage and Saint Francis Medical Center.

What began as just six prototype toys King built in April 2016 has now turned into more than 2,000 toys being given to kids in the Pikes Peak region.

A majority of Wheels of a Dream volunteers are school bus drivers as well. Volunteers were given souvenir toys with their names on them at the celebration.

The purpose of Wheels of a Dream: “A special toy for a child to hold in their hand; a memory to keep in their heart.”
