Museum exhibit tells story of POW wife’s efforts

H

elene Knapp never gave up hope.

Knapp’s Air Force pilot husband, Col. Herman Knapp, was declared missing in action on April 24, 1967 during a bombing mission in North Vietnam.

Despite at least six excavations of the crash site, his remains were never found. Since that time, Knapp has dedicated herself to raising awareness and money for POW/MIA initiatives.

“It was quite a change of life,” Knapp said. “I call April 24, 1967 my day of infamy.”

Knapp’s story is now being told in a traveling exhibit, “The League of Wives: Vietnam’s POW/MIA Allies and Advocates,” which opened to the public March 24 at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. It will be on display through December 2018.

The exhibit debuted at the Robert J. Dole Institute for Politics at the University of Kansas in May 2017.

Knapp and her husband lived in the Upper Skyway neighborhood in Colorado Springs. Following the tragic news, Knapp said she found solace in comfort provided by her neighbors. But she was determined to bring her husband’s remains home.

“He belongs to us and we want to bring him home,” Knapp added.

In the early 1970s, Knapp successfully led influential letter-writing and fundraising campaigns for POW/MIA advocacy. She also testified before Congress on POW/ MIA issues and represented Colorado Springs POW/MIA families at the 1971 Geneva Conference on International Human Rights.

In 1972, she was elected as the national coordinator for the National League of Families, a volunteer position which temporarily relocated her and her two children to Washington, D.C., where she continued to advocate for the cause as the first POW/MIA wife from Colorado to be elected to this national office.

“The men were worth it. They were all patriotic and devoted officers that were imprisoned, and they were worth fighting for,” Knapp said.

“After the war, the number of prisoners that came back that was nowhere near the number we had.

Most families want their human remains, if they’re there. They want to bring them home. That was the whole idea — we’d work to bring the prisoners home and work to get a full accounting.”

compelling the story of Knapp and the League of Wives was. The Dole Institute put the exhibit together, and the Pioneers Museum was chosen as the first museum to host it, according Leah Davis Witherow, Curator of History for the Pioneers Museum.

“This story has never been told.

We’re four or five decades out now and I think Americans still struggle to understand it and its relevancy and its legacy,” Witherow said. “And no one has ever examined the work of these women. What’s fascinating is they were told to not talk about their husbands for fear of endangering their lives.”

The exhibit includes artifacts about the Knapp and her efforts from the Dole Institute, the Richard Nixon Archives and from Knapp herself.

“Helene plays a huge role in this

story, both on a local level and a national one,” Witherow added.

Coinciding with the exhibits opening on March 24, Mayor John Suthers presented the Spirit of the Springs Celebration Award to Knapp.

“Helene’s outstanding leadership and service has brought national and international attention to the strong Colorado Springs military community and the homegrown POW/MIA advocacy organization Colorado Springs for POWs,” Mayor Suthers said.

Knapp is pleased to see that today there are still efforts being made in Congress to continue to search for remains of Vietnam War POWs. “We will never give up,” she said.

All That Glitters: A mountain of gold

old. This simple mineral has created fortunes and made dreams come true. Many us who have lived in the Pikes Peak region for a few years have driven up Ute Pass and then on to Cripple Creek and Victor. It’s a great day trip for kids and grandkids.

And if you’ve never visited Victor’s Lowell Thomas Museum or the Victor Ag and Mining Museum, you’re in for a treat. It’s as if the past — with its heavy ironclad machinery, old drills, rusty shovels, tractors and sepia-tone photos of (mostly) men on the job — suddenly comes to life. The chance to actually pan for gold at the Lowell Thomas is a bonus for anyone willing to scoop and sift.

But touring museums is about more than the past.

Imagine a chance to actually see the Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine up close. The operation is run today by Newmont Mining Corp– the world’s second largest gold mining company. It’s a 24/7, 365-day a year focus that employs 580 workers. Over the last several years, Newmont CC&V has brought about $600 million of new equipment and technology on-line, and gold production grew to about 400,000 troy ounces in 2017, double 2016’s total.

Identifying, removing and processing “ore bodies” (mineral-laden rock) from the earth isn’t easy. The work involves complex geophysical engineering, state of the industry ore processing and sustainable practices – all to achieve a satisfying economic as well as environmental result.

“Imagine more than 30 million years ago near Cripple Creek and Victor, volcanic eruptions occurred many times south and west of Pikes Peak,” says Newmont Mine Co. spokesman Brad Poulson Repeated volcanic activity caused molten earth to intrude into the earth’s crust, allowing liquefied hydrothermal fluids to flow into resulting “structural weaknesses.” Those underground veins of precious metals (particularly gold) found in today’s Cripple Creek Mining District are spread throughout a seven to 10 square mile area.

To meet demand for gold in the medical, aviation, space and electronics industries — as well as for jewelry and bullion — the mining industry is closely regulated by federal and state governments for dust, light emissions, water discharge, noise, vibration and, most importantly, safety. “The high cost to extract valuable minerals and to efficiently separate them from non-mineral material requires very specific technical know-how,” Poulson says,

“and our geography only makes the job more interesting.”

Mining begins with exploration. Test-drilled rock from up to 2000 feet below the mine’s surface – all carefully measured and monitored – is brought to the surface. These ore bodies are then assayed for gold content. Once found, a series of 300 holes, 15 feet apart and 40 feet deep are drilled and explosives are used to blast the rock or “muck,” which is then trucked to a crusher complex. Any muck not containing gold is stored and used for reclamation and in backfilling surface mines.

Some of the mine’s most dramatic visuals — viewed during public mine tours — are the gigantic haul trucks used to transport muck. Twenty-seven feet tall, 25 feet wide and 40 feet long, Newmont employs 22 of the giant workhorses. Colorado Springs resident Michael Raedel recalls seeing haul trucks during a mine tour with a company geologist.

“They’re impressive – and the drivers never turn them off. Our guide told us they simply idle them through the shift change between day and night crews — it saves energy and is more efficient,” he says.

Responsible energy preservation and maintaining sustainable practices such as lined leach fields (where chemicals and water are used to extract gold from other material) is welcomed by the mine’s Victor and Cripple Creek neighbors. The Southern Teller County Focus Group, for example, works with Newmont to develop local trails, preserve and relocate historic buildings. “Newmont’s high environmental and employee safety ratings are a plus – and they seem responsive to our concerns for noise, air and movement from blasting, if and when it occurs,” says STCFG President Ruth Zalewski.

Poulson says Newmont is proud to be a community partner and environmental steward. “Our goal at is to return any land within our perimeter to a use similar to the way we found it.”

A day of life on the frontier in Colorado B

efore the Gold Rush inspired droves of eager prospectors to set up camp on our turf in the late 1850s, the stars of Colorado’s frontier were American Indians, explorers, homesteaders, military men and fur trappers and traders.

Follow the itinerary below to trace the footsteps of the guys and gals who made our state what it is today.

MORNING

Start your journey at Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site near La Junta, a reconstructed 1830s fur-trading post where Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, trappers and travelers gathered to swap hot items like buffalo robes.

Situated on the Santa Fe Trail, a route between Missouri and New Mexico traversed by fortune seekers, Bent’s Old Fort became a center of commerce for those living on the plains and a hub for cultural interaction between American settlers and Plains Indians.

Stroll the adobe structure’s rooms and corridors, and chat up the period-clothing-clad employees about life at the insolated fortress.

Drive northwest to Pueblo’s El Pueblo History Museum, which honors El Pueblo, the 1842 fort and settlement where white trappers and traders, Mexican settlers, and Plains and Cherokee Indians lived, traded and got along (for the most part).

The fort was eventually attacked in 1854 by a band of Ute and Apaches and remained abandoned until 1989, when archeologists unearthed its remains and the museum was opened nearby.

Or head southwest toward Fort Garland, a military post built in 1852 to protect the new settlers in the San Luis Valley against resistant Ute Indians, who had called the area home for centuries.

Bookended by the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan mountains, the valley’s history stretches back to the Ice Age. Nomadic hunters thrived on the area’s abundant wildlife, and a bevy of storied figures strolled across the landscape, including explorer Zebulon Pike, mountain man Tom Tobin (a regular at Bent’s Old Fort and El Pueblo), and frontierswoman and daredevil Calamity Jane.

At Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center, learn about the many careers of Kit Carson, the famed wilderness guide, army officer and Indian agent who commanded the fort in the 1860s.

View a replica of the commander’s crib, and peruse a rare exhibit about Buffalo Soldiers, black troops assigned to the West after the Civil War.

EVENING

Head west to Alamosa to conclude your history lesson on Medano Pass, where Zebulon Pike is rumored to have been awestruck by the sight of what is now Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.

Watch the sunset over North America’s highest dunes and understand why Pike, who traveled to the San Luis Valley after “discovering” Pikes Peak in 1806, called them a “sea of sand.”

Free dance lesson day set for April 28

By Carol Thompson USA Dance, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting social dancing across America, hosts two free dance lesson days per year.

This is your chance to learn from professional dance instructors absolutely free! Since it is all-day, either bring your lunch or a small lunch and drink is available for $5.

April 28 is your chance to enjoy a spring fling with your significant other if you have one, but singles are welcome. Lessons are held at Immanuel Lutheran Church gymnasium, 828 E. Pikes Peak Ave. It’s at the corner of Pikes Peak and Institute, parking available behind the church.

No need to dress up, this is learning day, so dress comfortably, wear comfy leather soled shoes (to protect the wooden floor.)

At 9 a.m., the basics of social dancing and Waltz will be taught by Kathy Krumland and Tait Cyrus. East Coast Swing begins at 10 a.m. with Naomi Skee instructing. Morning lessons conclude with the love dance, Rumba, taught (appropriately!) by Richard and Debbie Love, husband and wife.

After lunch, a firecracker Salsa taught by LaTisha Hardy will rouse you from post lunch stupor at 1 p.m., followed by a tricky West Coast

Swing by John Sinnot and Jennifer Shirokov. Sinnot and Shirokov will close the afternoon session with a Nite Club two-step, a relaxing but pretty dance.

Happily, many of these instructors are new, and are attracting younger dancers which is part of USA Dance’s mission. Since this nonprofit, is also non-smoking, non-alcoholic, it attracts a lot of folks interested in healthy living. Recently one of our local couples traveled to Illinois, and asked the concierge of their hotel where to go dance. If you search www.

The next dance is scheduled for May 5. There is also a free dance lesson at 6 p.m., Rumba refresher, followed by social dancing from 7-10 p.m. The $10 fee for members ($15 non-members) includes the lesson, a huge buffet: shrimp cocktail, meatballs, veggies and dips, fruit galore and dessert as well as non-alcoholic drinks.

This is the time to dress a little bit fancy and put on our dancing shoes.

I won two PGA Tour tournaments at Castle Pines and my father captured two junior match-play tournaments on the state level here in the 1950s. Having competed in more than 20 U.S. Opens, I know that I’ll have the same type of challenges at the Senior Open because of the course and the world-class field. I’ll have to use all my skills to pass this ultimate test, but I am ready for it.”

Love has competed in 23 U.S. Opens and was the runner-up to Steve Jones in 1996 at Oakland Hills Country Club, in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. He posted 10 top-25 finishes, which also included a tie for fourth in 1995 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the site of this year’s U.S. Open. He also excelled in team competition.

Love played on the victorious 1985 USA Walker Cup Team, and also competed in six Ryder Cups and six Presidents Cups.

The Woman’s Club of Colorado Springs makes and distributes comfort pillows for cancer patients to help ease the pressure that causes pain and discomfort to their arms, shoulders and necks.

Each April, The Woman’s Club of Colorado Springs joins the National Pinwheels for Prevention campaign by “planting” pinwheel gardens throughout the community to bring about child abuse awareness.

This project is also part of the Not One More Child Coalition created by Commissioner Sallie Clark and District Attorney Dan May as a way to unite more representatives and organizations to share their goal of preventing child abuse.

In addition to the many volunteer activities that the members get involved with, they also enjoy multiple fun-filled events throughout

the year with the primary goal of fun and fellowship such as a fashion show, Triple T Party (martinis, tiaras, tampons) and bunco parties (games and food).

For me, playing music with Bill in The Storys duo has been a wonderful way to contribute these last 15 years.

The music we play brings peaceful smiles, laughter, memories long forgotten. It brings healing tears and soothes aching hearts. And doing psychotherapy all these years has hopefully been a way I am giving to this world.

Sometimes when we feel the most vulnerable and lonely, we can’t imagine that we have something to gift to another. But I believe even then, if we are aware that we ourselves are a contribution, we can bring to other people something that makes their day brighter.

hat does Easter mean to us and what difference does it make in our lives that Jesus has risen?

Even though I enjoy all of the “fun” things about Easter, even as a child I knew the true meaning of this special day. This is the day when we are reminded that Jesus truly lived; that He was born, died for our sins, and rose again – and this day should have a significant impact on our lives.

Jesus was born, lived and ministered to the multitudes, was compelled to bear His own cross to a hill outside Jerusalem, was nailed to that cross, died and was buried in a stone tomb. But, three days later, when the stone covering the entry to the tomb was rolled away, in an instant, history was changed forever.

For while religious leaders have come and gone, the fact remains – only One stepped forth from the tomb.

Only One has risen from the dead.

Only One has conquered death. Only One offers the promise of eternal life to those who follow Him. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in Me will live, even though he dies, and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die.” John 11:25-26 So what difference does Easter make? We can celebrate victory of life over death; we can give our children and grandchildren the promise that Jesus lives and we can declare that Jesus is Lord over all of our lives.

I can’t image the joy they felt when they gathered at the tomb that day and saw that the stone was rolled away.

UCCS Aging Center to host free caregiver workshop For Life After 50 The UCCS Aging Center will host a free workshop to give caregivers essential resources and skills to help navigate the challenges of caring for an aging loved one. The workshop will take place 1 to 4 p.m. on April 19 at MacKenzie Place Senior Living, 1605 Elm Creek View (next to Nancy Lewis Park).

The Aging Center’s Aging Families and Caregiver Program offers counseling and education for distressed caregiver families and referrals for supportive community services. Clients can receive up to eight free individual and/or group therapy sessions, thanks to a grant from the Pikes Peak Council of Governments’ Area Agency on Aging.

The program can help reduce caregiver stress and burnout, increase

skill and confidence in caregiving, engage families to work together, and balance family roles.

Attendees will hear presentations by caregiver experts, receive a comprehensive caregiver handbook, and have an opportunity to ask questions and connect with caregiving peers. TECO model train show slated for April 28-29 For Life After 50 Train Expo Colorado (TECO) was established to organize local events and swap meets and consolidate model railroading resources. TECO is a nonprofit organization managed by volunteers provided by supporting Model Railroad clubs and associations. Each TECO train show features regional and historic railways of the Colorado region.

Train Expo Colorado will have their next model train show in the Chapel Hills Mall Event Center at 1710 Briargate Blvd. The Model Train Show will be held on Saturday and Sunday April 28 - 29, 2018. Hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m..

Operating model train layouts and vendors are only a portion of the model train show. TECO will host historical presentations on The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad daily at 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. hourly “how-to” clinics, a Seek & Find scavenger hunt for children of all ages, as well as door prizes for those in attendance.

The BSA Railroading Merit Badge will be offered on Saturday. Cost is $6 per person or $9 for a family of two or more. Seniors and military receive a $1 discount. Accompanied children, 12 and under and scouts in uniform free.

AgeWell Medical expands, accepts Humana For Life After 50 As of Jan. 1, 2018, AgeWell Medical Associates began accepting Humana Medicare Advantage Plans.

AgeWell, an independent medical practice dedicated to senior health care, already accepts traditional Medicare and many of the other Medicare Advantage Plans, like United, but patients have asked about Humana as well. AgeWell is pleased to announce that they are now “in network” for most Humana plans. When signing up, patients need to choose the practice physician, Dr. Jeffrey Kulp, as their Primary Care Provider since most Medicare Advantage plans do not allow patients to choose Nurse Practitioners as primary care providers. Sven replies, “But what are you going to tell your sunday school children?”

“Oh Sven,what I always tell my sunday school children, you don’t have to smoke and drink just to have fun!”

The noisemakers were obviously displeased, but they accepted his offer and continued their afternoon ruckus.

A few days later, the wily retiree approached them again as they drummed their way down the street.

“Look,” he said, “I haven’t

received my Social Security check yet, so I’m not going to be able to give you more than 25 cents. Will that be okay?”

“A lousy quarter?” the drum leader exclaimed. “If you think we’re going to waste our time beating these cans around for a quarter, you’re nuts!

No way. We quit!”

And the old man enjoyed peace and serenity for the rest of his days.

Dear Marci, I’ve heard that there are going to be new Medicare cards. How do I get mine and what should I do with it?

- Anita (Fairbanks, AK) Dear Anita, New Medicare cards will soon be on their way.

If you are already enrolled in Medicare, you will receive your new card sometime between April 2018 and April 2019, based on where you live. As long as your address with Social Security is up-to-date, there is nothing you have to do to receive your new Medicare card. If your mailing address is not up-to-date, call 800-772-1213, visit www.myssa.gov, or go to a local Social Security office to update it. You do not have to pay anything for your new card.

Medicare beneficiaries are getting a new card because the old Medicare cards contain a Medicare number typically based on their Social Security number (SSN).

Recent legislation requires the removal of the Social Security number from Medicare cards. This is intended to address the risk of identity theft that might result from Medicare cards containing people’s Social Security numbers. Beginning this year, the Medicare number based on your Social Security number is being replaced with a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).

The new number is made up of 11 uppercase letters and numbers. The MBI is unique, randomly generated, and the characters will be non-intelligent, which means they do not have any hidden or special meaning. The new Medicare numbers and cards will not change Medicare benefits at all.

Once you get your new card, you should keep it safe, as you would with credit cards and other insurance cards. You should bring your new card with you when you visit your health care providers.

As soon as you have your new card, your providers will be able to use it to bill Medicare on your behalf.

There will be a transition period, from April 2018 to December 2019, during which providers will be able to bill Medicare using either the old or new Medicare numbers and cards.

Starting in January 2020, though, providers will only be able to use the new Medicare number for most claims. To prevent any delay in receiving services or having them paid for, you should bring your Medicare card to your provider right away.

Once you have your new card, you should safely and securely destroy your old card.

There are some concerns about scams that take advantage of people who are confused about the transition to new Medicare cards. Here are some important things to keep in mind: • Social Security and Medicare already have your personal identifying information. This means that unless you ask them to, they will never call,

Fortunately, solutions like sheet pan suppers make it easy to create dishes with exceptional flavor depth that come together quickly and clean up just as fast.

Keeping a variety of vegetables on hand makes it simple to pull together a family meal. Onions, for example, are versatile, flavorful, easy to store, have a long shelf-life and are available year-round from U.S. growers. An added benefit when cooking with onions is that you’re serving up a good source of fiber.

Easy Drumstick-Quinoa Sheet Pan Supper

Recipe courtesy of the National Onion Association and Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Committee Servings: 4-6 8-10 chicken legs 1 fennel bulb 1 large yellow onion, sliced 1 large red onion, sliced 2 garlic cloves, sliced 3 medium-sized potatoes, cubed 1 orange (1/4 cup juice and zest) 1/4 t thyme, dried 2 T olive oil 1 t sea salt 1/2 t black pepper 2 T fresh chopped parsley orange rind curls brown rice, cooked according to package directions quinoa, cooked according to package directions Heat oven to 400 F. Line 13-by-18-inch sheet pan with parchment paper.

Place chicken legs on pan. Spread

fennel, yellow onion, red onion, garlic and potatoes around and in between legs.

In small bowl, whisk together orange juice and zest, thyme and olive oil. Pour mixture over chicken and vegetables. Season with salt and pepper.

Roast 45 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and vegetables are tender. Cook rice and quinoa.

Garnish chicken with parsley and orange curls. Serve over brown rice and quinoa.

Sheet Pan-Style Buddha Bowls

Recipe courtesy of the National Onion Association and Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Committee Servings: 4-6 2 yellow onions, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch wedges 1/2 head of red or purple cabbage, cut into wedges 2 red potatoes, cut into 1/2-inch wedges 1 small butternut squash, peeled and 1/2-inch diced 1 pound Brussels sprouts, halved extra-virgin olive oil salt, to taste black pepper, to taste 1 1/2 c quinoa, cooked according to package directions

Tahini sauce: 1 T tahini 1/2 lemon, juiced 1 t Dijon mustard 1/2-1 t maple syrup 2 avocados, peeled and sliced fresh parsley Heat oven to 400 F. Line 13-by-18-inch sheet pan with parchment paper.

Place onion, cabbage, potatoes, squash and Brussels sprouts in single layer on pan. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast vegetables 40 minutes, or until tender.

Add more salt and pepper if needed.

While vegetables roast, cook quinoa. To make tahini sauce: In small bowl, whisk tahini, lemon juice, mustard and syrup until smooth.

To assemble Buddha bowls: Spoon quinoa into bowls. Add roasted veggies and garnish with avocado and parsley. Drizzle tahini sauce over each bowl and serve.

Ladies “Spa aaahhhh” Day. April 12, 9 a.m. to noon. $40. Pamper yourself with a morning designed to provide quiet, calm and relaxation-gentle music, fragrance, and friends. You will receive a manicure, a hydration mask facial and access to a beauty bar for reapplication of your makeup.
