Dancing gives senior rhythm for life

T

here’s no slowing down for John Mazzella, an avid dancer and former marathon runner, who looks forward to weekly dance events.

Mazzella turns 92 on March 28.

The former U.S. Air Force weather forecaster hosts a singles table at the VFW Post 4051’s weekly dances. The post was like a second home to Mazzella and his wife Jenny.

“We volunteered in the kitchen,” he said. “We cooked hundreds of meals as volunteers, and did it gladly.”

But dancing was their true love.

The couple met in 1947 while Mazzella was stationed in Berlin, Germany.

“My wife and I enjoyed ballroom dancing. We loved to jitterbug. We loved to poco waltz,” Mazzella added.

“We got married in 1950. We were married 63 years.”

Jenny passed away four years ago due to complications related to Alzheimer’s.

“She was full of life, just like me … very outgoing,” Mazzella said fighting back tears. “It’s a very disheartening disease. She would look at me, and she would smile. Then she would say, ‘Where does your wife live?’”

Mazzella continues to dance not only as a tribute to his late wife, but because he loves seeing the joy it brings others. The singles table at the VFW is hosted at the very table he and his wife sat at for years. The VFW commander and board were gung ho on the idea, when Mazzella presented it to them, he said. All are welcome no matter what level of dancing.

“I dance with everyone who shows up. I can take a woman, and I’ve done it many times, like on a rhumba … I use a lot of voice and pressure to help guide them,” Mazzella said. “Women like that, especially if I get someone who’s new to me and I’m new to them. I consider myself a rhythm dancer. I’ll dance to music in no time at all. I listen to all the instruments that are being played when we’re dancing. You can sense what’s coming.”

Mazzella’s favorite dance is the jitterbug.

“Glen Miller is the Bible of all jitterbugs and foxtrots,” he said. “I

first started dancing at age 12. I had a roly poly aunt that was all of 4 feet tall. We did a polka. I had a brother and his wife, oh, could they jitterbug.

I said, ‘Oh, I want to do that when I grow up.’”

Mazzella served in the Air Force from 1945 to 1975. He was stationed in Duluth, Minn.; Rome, New York and spent 16 years in Germany.

“I had a lot of good assignments. I briefed a lot of pilots. They all had to get their weather,” Mazzella said.

When he retired from the Air Force, Mazzella became a stock broker. He did that for five years, but said, “I didn’t like what I was seeing among some of the brokers and gave that up.”

He transitioned into becoming a master gardener and worked at a nursery for two years.

“I loved it, but I was getting too much sun,” Mazzella said. “I have a love of seafood, and a friend of mine mentioned he could get me a job working in the seafood department at King Soopers. I did that for two years.”

At age of 37, Mazzella said that’s when his life really changed.

“I was a heavy smoker. The reason I quit cold turkey was the surgeon general was going to come out in 1946 and tell us how bad smoking was,” Mazzella said. “I beat him to it. Dec. 22, 1963 I quit.”

It was also then that Mazzella started an exercise regimen. He started out slowing, walking just a few blocks at a time before progressing to seven or eight blocks. Then he started jogging.

“Next thing you know, I’m a marathon runner,” Mazzella said.

He went on to earn 75 medals from numerous running events he took part in, many in Germany. He has also run up Pikes Peak a handful of times, three of which were when he was past the age of 50.

“First time I went up, I almost died,” Mazzella laughs. “Swore I’d never do it again.”

Mazzella’s final run down Pikes Peak ended his running career. He, unfortunately, blew out his quadriceps muscles. However, he still continues a hybrid workout of sorts at home.

“That’s why I dance like I do,” he added. “I want to stay tuned up.

Mazzella was sidelined with his lungs hurting back in November and had to go to the hospital. Then in

January, he had a kidney stone attack.

But it wasn’t long before he was back at it dancing. Besides the VFW gathering, Mazzella frequents the International Dance Club gatherings weekly and attends the Sunday Colorado Springs Jazz Club events as well. In the summer months, you

“I miss her very much,“ Mazzella said, as a few tears run down his face. “But life goes on.”

Dancing and the fact that Mazzella likes to keep Christmas decorations out, helps cheer him up.

“Since I haven’t got a lot of time left in this world, it’s Christmas every day,” he said.

DANCE/from page 8 as a civilian after retirement. After serving a full 20 years in the Air Force, Kay received a disability retirement based on a severe rheumatoid arthritis condition. She was unable to rise from a sitting to standing position at this point in her life.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a crippling disease, affecting joints and muscles throughout the body. Kay received no physical therapy, only medications for the pain. Being Kay, she wasn’t held down for long. Long hot tub soaks eased the pain somewhat, and with the meds, Kay was able to return to social dancing in 1994, as a way to keep moving, keep her joints lubricated and fight the disease. Dancing became Kay’s passion and so, of course, she began to want to excel, to compete. By 1998, Kay began to compete in earnest, and over the ensuing years, won three world championships and numerous national ones.

Kay’s passion for dance is a walking advertisement for the advantages of country and ballroom dance. In addition, she does Zumba and line dance and teaches all categories. “Dancing is the best non-medicinal treatment for depression,” says Kay. It also aids in the treatment of Alzheimer’s, dementia, and more recently Parkinson’s diseases, slowing the progress of these afflictions. In addition, dance is wonderful for

Kay offers a weekly Tuesday night practice session from 6-7:30 p.m. for only $5. Her second Sunday of each month dance is from 6-9 p.m. and is open to all dancers, country and ballroom.

In addition, Kay teaches dance classes at the Colorado Springs Senior Center on Wednesday afternoons (719-955-3400 for information.) For those preferring a nightclub environment, you can catch Kay or her dance partner John Sinnot, teaching Country two-step classes for free on Saturday nights from 6-7 p.m. at the new Whiskey Baron Saloon, on the corner of Vickers and Academy. Band starts at 9 p.m., DJ music from 6-9 p.m.

For those who say they can’t dance, two left feet, can’t learn, Kay says, “I can teach you” and you better believe her. She says, “no one is helpless, you have to keep practicing, repeating what you have learned in class, don’t give up.” See you on the dance floor!

the production of fecal short chain fatty acids, or SCFAs. SCFAs have a direct and indirect influence on our well-being.

Researchers worldwide have concluded that SCFAs critically support immune regulation as well as organ and tissue metabolism.

The SFCA butyrate is especially effective against chronic inflammation, metabolic disorders and atherosclerosis. Other diseases that are associated with a negatively altered composition of the microbiota include obesity, coronary heart disease, diabetes and ulcerative colitis.

The results just keep rolling in. I encourage you to do the research.

These studies are done independent of diet. For those of you who shy away from the “D” word, this is excellent news.

You can start moving and grooving your guts and improve your health, without going on a diet! Don’t be surprised though … once you start exercising, you may start craving healthier foods. Follow those cravings.

Here’s just one example of the many recent studies being done: A

research team was formed by Jacob Allen (Postdoctoral Researcher at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio) and Jeffrey Woods (Professor of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois). They recruited 18 lean and 14 obese sedentary adults and sampled their gut microbiomes. The subjects began an exercise program of supervised cardiovascular exercise, 30-60 minutes three times a week for six weeks.

The team sampled the participants’ gut microbiomes after the exercise program and again after following six weeks of sedentary behavior. There was no required diet.

The result? Fecal measurements of SCFA, especially butyrate, increased as a result of the exercise program.

When the subjects returned to sedentary life, the levels declined.

This was confirmed every which way including genetically.

Three times a week for 30-60 minutes with a commitment of six weeks should do it. If you’re unable to do that kind of cardio, consider a low intensity program. Low intensity exercise is enough to reduce your transient stool time, thereby reducing the contact time between pathogens and your gastrointestinal mucus layer.

And THAT means you reduce the risk of colon cancer, diverticulosis, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Switch to high intensity interval training and you increase fat and sugar oxidation, which generates adenosine triphosphate (ATP Energy).

Zumba, water cardio, drumming class, step class, body pump, hot hula … all of these have a Silver Sneakers version if you need to start slow. One final note: It’s important that you don’t exhaust yourself and over train.

Overtraining creates body stress and may have an adverse effect on your gut microbiomes. Same with insufficient recovery. Remember to refeed in accordance with the recommendations of a trusted athletic nutrition source.

God wants to fill our lives with His love, and when we are transformed by His love it will naturally overflow and touch those lives around us. He wants the best for us NOW! We don’t have to wait until tomorrow or next week to know His love and let Him change us into extraordinary people. Be energized today by his love.

Let His love make a difference in your life and the lives of others around you. Step out of the old mold of everyday life, step into faith, and let God show you how to live extraordinary lives. God loves using “ordinary” people like you and me to do His will.

Our youngest son was learning to read and eagerly awaited the newspaper being thrown each evening so he could run out and get it, opening it to see if he recognized any words before giving it to his Dad. One evening he came flying in, waved the paper under my husband’s nose and said, “Dad, Dad, Look! The United Methodist Women are going on strike!”

He shifted from foot to foot while his Dad read the article. Glancing up, he composed his face and said softly to our son, “No, Sean, it’s the United Mine Workers who are going on strike. See, they have the same initials.” Sean breathed a sigh of relief.

Later my husband said to me in private, “If the United Methodist Women ever go on strike, we might as well close the church.”

My husband was a United Methodist minister for 39 years.

One morning before Sherry awoke, her dad found the pet dead in its cage.

He disposed of the animal and returned to Sherry’s room to tell her of its passing. She didn’t get upset, nor did she show any tears of sadness. Her dad was a bit confused but decided to give her some time to comprehend what he’d just told her.

Later that morning, Sherry joined the rest of her family at the breakfast table.

“Do you want to have a funeral for your furry friend?” her dad asked.

A few days late, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to heaven together. God met the mice at the gates with the same offer he made to the cat.

“It keeps my camel from wandering off,” said the man.

“I don’t see any camel,” said the barkeep.

“That’s what my psychiatrist said this morning,” replied the man.

After a time the man ordered another beer for himself and asked for the bucket to be refilled, too.

“Why do you need the buckets of beer?” asked the barkeep.

“Well,” said the man, “I asked my psychiatrist what it would take to make my camel visible, and he told me about six mugs of beer.”

When the man finished his mug, he picked up the bucket and headed for the door.

There is a saying that growing old is not for the faint of heart. Growing older truly requires inner strength and resilience for many reasons, as you may well know.

Aging is accompanied by a number of changes — physically, emotionally, and mentally — with some occurring earlier than others. For instance, age-related muscle loss has been shown to begin as early as one’s 20s. Educating yourself on changes that occur with aging can prevent acceleration of decline through proper treatment and preventive measures.

One such change to monitor is hearing loss.

Gradual hearing loss as you age is common, with as many as one in four showing signs of hearing loss by age 55 and one in two showing signs of hearing loss over age 65. Research indicates a greater number of men experience hearing loss than women.

Damage to the inner ear, repeated exposure to loud sounds and ear wax build-up are other possible factors contributing to loss of hearing.

If you suffer from hearing loss you may notice muffled sounds, difficulty following conversations, or

risk of accidents.

This is due to lower situational awareness based on auditory cues in the environment, such as hearing oncoming vehicles, alarms, or verbal warnings. While most hearing loss is irreversible, taking advantage of technology to improve hearing has numerous benefits.

Multiple studies have identified hearing loss as a risk factor for developing dementia. Those with moderate to severe hearing loss – beyond the normal decline that occurs with aging – are more frequently diagnosed with dementia than peers without advanced hearing loss.

Unfortunately, further research is needed to fully understand the relationship between hearing loss and dementia; however, those with untreated or unidentified hearing loss tend to show greater difficulty with attention and memory.

There is some speculation that these difficulties are caused by inability to hear information, rather than actual forgetting or inattention. In other words, if people heard adequately, there might be no sign of memory impairment. Studies that have tracked those with hearing loss over time, however, have found that sound-amplification devices appeared

Dear Marci, I collect Social Security retirement benefits, and I have Original Medicare. I know that my Social Security award and my Medicare Part B premium have both changed between 2017 and 2018, but I don’t really understand what this means for me. Can you help me understand this?

-Darlene (Carson City, Nev.) Dear Darlene, The base premium for Medicare Part B (medical insurance) is $134 in 2018. This is the same as the base premium from 2017. People who paid the base premium of $134 in 2017 will pay the same amount, while most people who paid less will begin paying $134 per month.

About a quarter of people will not pay the full $134 Part B premium because their Social Security benefits did not increase enough in 2018 to cover the increase in the Part B premium.

There is a rule that your Social Security benefits cannot decrease because of an increase in the Part B premium. This is known as the hold harmless provision. Most people have the Part B premium deducted from their Social Security benefits. Each year, the increase to the Part B premium cannot be greater than the cost of living adjustment (COLA);

otherwise, a person’s Social Security award amount would go down once the Part B premium is deducted. People in this situation pay a lower premium than the standard premium so that their Social Security benefits do not decrease.

They pay a premium increase that is the same dollar amount as their cost of living adjustment.

This year, the cost of living adjustment is 2 percent, which is higher than in past years. If you did not pay $134 for Part B in 2017, part of all of your cost of living adjustment will go toward paying the increase to your Part B premium.

This means that you may not see an increase to your social Security benefits once the Part B premium is deducted. You should look at your Social Security Statement for personalized information about your benefit and premium amount. Here are examples of how the 2 percent COLA can affect the Part B premium: • Tom’s social security income in 2017 was $1,500 and his Part B premium was $109. In 2018, Tom’s COLA will be 2 percent of $1,500, or $30.

The increase in his Part B premium, from $109 to $134, is $25. Tom will not be affected by the hold harmless provision this year, so he will pay $134 for the Part B premium, and will see a net increase of

• Magda’s social security income was $950 in 2017 and her Part B premium was $104. This year, the COLA will increase her Social Security award by $19. Magda’s premium will be raised by the dollar amount of her COLA, making it $123 in 2018. There will be no increase to Magda’s Social Security award once the Part B premium has been deducted.

Keep in mind, $134 is the standard premium for people with a yearly income below $85,000 for an individual ($170,000 for a married couple). If your income is higher than that, you may have to pay an income-related monthly adjustment amount, also known as IRMAA. If you would like to learn more about the IRMAA, including how to appeal your IRMAA if you believe it is incorrect, you can contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).

Senior Day at the Capitol set for March 21 For Life After 50 Senior Day at the Capitol will take place on March 21.

First, you don’t have to be a senior to attend, you just need to have an interest in issues impacting seniors.

This is a very special event organized

by Colorado Senior Lobby. If you have not attended before, plan to do so this year. Your voice and your membership in Colorado Senior Lobby can help preserve senior funding in Colorado and help set the direction of senior services in the future.

At the event, you will hear from legislators, elected officials, and Senior Day at The Capitol Sponsors that serve seniors. The morning session starts out at the Capitol located at 200 E. Colfax Ave. in Denver.

Seniors are hosted in the historic Old Supreme Court Chamber in the North 2nd floor mezzanine of the Capitol.

A continental breakfast is provided starting at 8 a.m., and the morning program starts at 9 a.m..

From 8 to 9 a.m., you can visit exhibitor tables set up in the north rotunda plus tour the Capitol.

The actual morning session starting at 9 a.m. features State Legislators who join us in the Old Supreme Court Chamber to talk about senior issues and legislation. The Governor, Speaker of the House, Senate President, and all Legislators are all invited (schedules pending).

This is a free event with no reserved seating; however, priority is given to seniors and the disabled.

The afternoon session is being held at Scottish Rites Masonic Center located at 1370 Grant St. This historic building is just southeast of The Capitol. Box lunches will be offered and can be paid for online at a cost of $10 each or send in an order form with check.

Worst Market Decline In Two Years.

10% Correction Leaves Pre And Current Retirees Asking, “Just A Correction, Or A Precursor For Something More?

Rick Kelly, CSA The S&P 500 hit record highs of 2,872.87 on January 26, 2018. 13 days later, on February 8, 2018, the S&P 500 had declined to 2,581.00. A 10% drop of 291.87.

A 10% decline is referred to as a correction. It’s not a bear market or a recession or a crash. It’s a correction and typically temporary. However, at the time of this writing, we are in the midst of a bull market nearing a record of over nine years in length. The obvious question is, “Since we are so long into a bull market, is there a decline bigger than a correction coming?”

If you are nearing or already in retirement, this should be a wake-up call for you.

Be thankful because your portfolio just took a quiz in preparation for a final exam and showed you where you stand and what you need to work on. To pass the quiz, your portfolio needed to lose less than 10%, preferably much less. Your portfolio failed the quiz if it was down 10% or more. If your portfolio failed the quiz of a correction, it will fail a final exam and adjustments should be made.

Four adjustments that will have the most impact for a safer portfolio are: 1.

Eliminate market risk on at least the core portion of your portfolio Be happy with returns in the 4.00% to 8.00% range for at least the core portion of your portfolio Eliminate any unnecessary fees that reduce your returns and increase your losses Long-term reliable and secure income is vital. Review your portfolio now. Whatever doesn’t meet the four adjustments should be revaluated as to reduce your risk.

There are financial alternatives that are safer, provide competitive returns and don’t charge fees that are available and were made for retirement.

Use the correction as a wake-up call and quiz to show you where your portfolio stands, then take the steps you need to protect your retirement. Maybe it’s just a correction or the precursor for something more. Either way, you can have a more secure retirement before a final exam.

Help fight inflammation with food

n top of being tasty, certain foods contain specific nutrients and natural compounds that may help fight inflammation, a condition linked to arthritis and gout. With that in mind, try heading to the fridge or pantry the next time you feel joint pain, swelling or stiff knees.

Colorful fruits and vegetables, including ruby red tart cherries and dark leafy greens like spinach and kale, are among the most powerful anti-inflammatory foods, along with oily fish (salmon, sardines and scallops), nuts, seeds and whole grains. Ingredients such as ginger, turmeric and olive oil may also help combat inflammation.

1 c sprouts (alfalfa or microgreens) 1/2 T butter 8 oz. bay scallops, patted dry To make savory granola: Heat oven to 350 F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or baking mat.

In large bowl, combine oats, walnuts, sunflower seeds, buckwheat groats and pepitas. In small bowl, whisk together olive oil, honey, mustard, salt and pepper.

Pour wet ingredients into large bowl and toss until well combined.

Spread mixture onto baking sheet in single layer and bake 18-20 minutes, tossing once halfway through, until granola starts to turn golden brown and crispy around edges.

Remove from oven, add cherries, toss to combine, spread into single layer and let cool.

To make dressing: In food processor, process shallot, olive oil, cherries, cherry juice, mustard, vinegar, honey, salt and pepper until smooth.

To make salad: Place kale, corn kernels and sprouts in large bowl; set aside.

In large skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter. Once hot, add

scallops and cook until golden and starting to caramelize on one side. Flip and repeat on other side.

Add scallops to large salad bowl.

Pour dressing over top and toss until well combined.

Break up granola into small pieces and add to salad bowl. Toss lightly before serving.

Following the Civil War, regiments of African-American men known as Buffalo Soldiers served on the western frontier, battling Indians, and protecting settlers.
