UCHealth Memorial given stroke designation

U

CHealth Memorial Hospital Central has become the first hospital in southern Colorado to be named a Comprehensive Stroke Center, an elite designation given to programs that offer the highest and most advanced level of stroke care.

Just three other hospitals in Colorado – all in metro Denver – have the designation. In all, just over 200

medical centers nationwide share this distinction. Comprehensive Stroke Centers must offer 24/7 intensive medical and surgical care to treat the most serious and complex strokes – including advanced brain imaging and highly sophisticated endovascular catheter treatments in which tiny wires are guided through an artery and into the brain to break up and remove a clot.

’ve been the man behind the scenes putting this publication together for the past few years, so I decided I’d finally take a little time to introduce myself.

I’ve worked in newspapers for 20 years in just about every facet – reporter, editor, photographer, page layout, delivery and even a little ad sales. Since the time I wrote my first story for my small farm town (Johnstown, Colo.) newspaper as a high school junior, I knew I wanted to

work in newspapers.

Last year, I was fortunate to take over editor duties for Life After 50. Since then, my goal has been to provide readers with engaging, insightful and entertaining content. I’m all about featuring seniors in the Pikes Peak region. That’s the most rewarding part of the job – getting out and meeting seniors and hearing their stories.

This month, we have an update on the forthcoming Pikes Peak National Veterans Cemetery, something that was long overdue. Also, be sure to read our contributor Becky Hurley’s piece on the Innovations in Aging Collaborative, which is striving to keep Colorado Springs an age-friendly community.

Bratton man behind Green Mountain Falls trails system

ick Bratton wasn’t exactly sure where he was going when he decided to relocate from Colorado Springs 35 years ago after retiring from a 21-year career in the Air Force, so he just started driving west.

“I wanted to get out of the city,” he said. “I drove up (Highway) 24 and took every side road I could take. I got to Green Mountain Falls and said, ‘This is it. I found the promised land.’”

Bratton immediately fell in love with the small community tucked away in the pines in the mountains west of Colorado Springs. An avid outdoorsman, he relished the idea of hiking there.

That passion for hiking also inspired him to form the Green Mountain Falls Trails Committee.

“I moved here because it’s a small mountain town with lots of trails. There wasn’t a trails committee.” he said. “Three of us got together and said we were going to improve some of these trails.

They were in terrible shape - heavily eroded and not well marked. I thought there’s great potential for hiking here. Now, we have about 65 volunteers on the committee.”

Bratton’s even served as mayor and a town trustee at one point.

Through the years, the committee has built more than 20 miles of trails around Green Mountain Falls, Bratton said. The committee hosts six to eight work days each summer starting in May. What started as a tiny group of people pitching in, now usually involves 25 to 30 spread out in eight crews.

“We car pool up the mountain, work until about 1 p.m. and then come down for a nice, free meal for all the workers in The Pantry garden,” Bratton said.

“It’s a real social group. Everyone knows everybody, and we have a lot of fun.”

Bratton worked as a civil engineer in the Air Force, or in simpler terms as he puts it, an architect.

Those skills definitely came in handy in building trails.

“You have to have imagination to be able to visualize where a trail should be,” he said. “After a while you get to where you can actually see a 15 percent grade.”

Of the 20 miles of trail, more than half are brand new, according to Bratton. The committee also maintains and repairs older trails.

“If you don’t maintain a trail, Mother Nature will take it back,” Bratton said.

Each trail is designed just 18 to 24 inches wide, in order to minimize the environmental impact, Bratton added.

“Native Americans would always hike single file. There’s no holding hands and that crap,” Bratton joked. “But let the lady lead, so she can set the pace.”

All the trails in the system are fairly easy hikes, Bratton said. All trails are designed with just a 15 percent grade. The lengthier Crystal Trail does include 130 switchbacks and took the committee

four years to build.

“But it also provides the most dramatic views,” volunteer Mike Lohman, who also designed the trail maps, mentioned.

Bratton said the majority of hikers he sees are over the age of 50. But, of course, he encourages everyone he meets to not only hike a trail or two but get involved and volunteer for a work day.

“Seniors are retired and some of them have a lot of time on their hands; others don’t,” he said.

“They’re looking for something to do and it’s back to nature. They can hike at their own pace.”

Green Mountain Falls trails are the ideal escape for a peaceful hike because no bicycles or horses are allowed on any of the trails, with the exception of the American Discovery Trail, which is an 8,000

Bratton’s favorite trail is, by far, the Catamount Trail, which the committee built from scratch. Though these days, he doesn’t hike as often but still leads the volunteers during work days.

“My knees are shot now,” he mentioned.

“Of course, in honor of all the work he’s done, we have the Bratton Trail,” Lohman added.

“Someone else started that, because I’m not that kind of guy,” Bratton said.

You can catch Bratton enjoying breakfast at his favorite eating spot – The Pantry. Just be prepared to be recruited for a trails committee work day. But there are rewards that come with moving a little dirt.

“Being outdoors, seeing Mother Nature’s beauty, companionship with fellow workers, a sense of achievement … When someone comes for the

first time and builds a piece of trail, you tell them to look back and see what they did,” he said. “Then they bring their friends to see what they helped build.”

Doctor to soldier: ‘Carry on’

A

rmy Sgt. 1st Class Angel Gonzalez woke on the morning of Nov. 8 and headed to physical fitness training at Fort Carson.

That morning, Gonzalez completed 80 pushups in 2 minutes, 90 sit-ups in 2 minutes and a 2-mile run in 13 minutes and 26 seconds. That earned him a perfect score on the Army Physical Fitness test.

Then Gonzalez, 41, a 17.5-year veteran of the Army who led a 25-person platoon at Fort Carson, felt weird. He was headed into his office, felt dazed and confused “and I couldn’t get my arm to open the door.

“About that time, one of my co-workers started asking me if I was OK. I started to collapse. My arm stopped working and my language center was affected. I couldn’t speak English, and I started speaking in Spanish,’’ Gonzalez said. “I could see and hear everything perfectly. I was very aware of everything that was going on, I just couldn’t move or speak.’’

An ambulance rushed Gonzalez to UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central where a team of doctors, nurses and technicians trained to respond to strokes were waiting. A number of diagnostic tests were completed.

Though Gonzalez was in and out of consciousness, he remembers clearly the moment Dr. Dan Huddle, an interventional neuro radiologist, stood over him.

“He put his hand on my chest, and he said, ‘We know what is wrong with you. We are about to do surgery, and you are going to feel a

lot better when you wake up,’ ’’ Gonzalez said.

Dr. Huddle threaded a catheter into Gonzalez’s brain, extracted a blood clot and then placed a stent in Gonzalez’s carotid artery to open the vessel. Neurologist Jon O’Neil and neurointensivist Chamisa MacIndoe provided follow-up care in the ICU. The day before Veteran’s Day, as Gonzalez recovered in the ICU, a team of clinicians visited Gonzalez and gave him gifts: a T-shirt signed by the staff, a bouquet of red, white and blue flowers and a stress ball shaped like a miniature brain.

“I’m going to throw this at my brother,’’ said Gonzalez, making everyone in his ICU hospital room laugh. “This is amazing — this is such a nice gesture. Everybody is so nice here.’’

A few months later, Gonzalez is doing well and trying to improve the mobility in his right hand. Every day, he completes physical, occupational and speech therapy and is on leave from the Army. He is forever grateful for the skill of the physicians who prevented him from living a life with what could have been significant deficits.

“I can’t think of them without choking up.

They saved my life and I thought everything was done, to be honest. Every time I think of them, I can’t help but choke up,’’ Gonzalez said.

Memorial is the second UCHealth hospital to receive Comprehensive Stroke Center certification, joining University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora and underscoring UCHealth’s commitment to providing world-class stroke care. Since becoming part of UCHealth in 2012, Memorial’s neurosciences team has grown more than 530 percent and now includes a team of 57 providers and staff members including five neurosurgeons, neuro hospitalists, neuro interventionalists and neuro critical care specialists.

UCHealth also operates the Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit – a specialized emergency department on wheels staffed with a specialized stroke team – that can administer rapid treatment in the field rather than waiting for a patient to arrive at a hospital. Innovations in Aging: Building an Age-Friendly City

By Becky Hurley Imagine a place where a retiree can enjoy safe parks and open spaces, find a part-time job to augment Social Security and access the best health care.

In this world, you’ll find plenty of affordable living, personal assistance, meals options - and a transportation system to make it easy to get to the grocery store, social activities or the doctor.

Is this Shangri-La – or could it be Colorado Springs?

After all, we’re a great place to live. U.S. News & World Report and Kiplinger’s have named us one of the nation’s best retirement destinations. In fact Colorado’s senior population is forecast to increase by 150 percent by 2030. But where do we start?

The good news: the Pikes Peak region is home to a number of dynamic senior community public and private sector resources. The city is also home to the Innovations in Aging Collaborative (IIAC): a forward-thinking, roll-up-your-sleeves organization, founded in 2009 by B.J. Scott and Barbara Yalich.

“Since aging begins the day we are born, our goal is to make the city an exceptional place in which to age for all generations,” Scott says.

Executive Director Claire Anderson, Community Outreach Coordinator Natasha Riveron and an engaged community board are already making impressive strides.

The program got a boost in 2016 when the city was officially designated as a member of the AARP’s Network of Age Friendly Cities. With support from Innovations, senior services providers like Silver Key, the Senior Resource Council and the Area Agency on Aging are helping to build an inclusive, accessible community – one that supports a healthy, active and engaged lifestyle. Specific areas of focus include: outdoor spaces and buildings; transportation; housing; social participation; respect and social inclusion; civic participation and employment; communication and information as well as community support and health services.

“We have a long way to go,” Anderson says,

“but it’s exciting to see how everyone’s hard work is paying off. She credits IIAC’s community outreach for bringing together nonprofits, government and private sector partners like ENT and AARP. Those efforts extend to the state and regional decision makers, grantors, volunteers and stakeholders, says past Board Chair David Lord. The NextFifty Initiative, for example, with Governor Hickenlooper’s endorsement, led to creation of a new independent Colorado grant-making foundation and cabinet position dedicated to a vulnerable and under-served aging population. Locally, IIAC works on wide-ranging projects, including: safer, accessible parks and public spaces; helping seniors connect with transportation services that foster independence; and, increasing opportunities for intergenerational village living in the Old North

End. It also hopes to develop a senior-friendly database and Web portal for online searchers.

One of the most immediate needs: finding and creating more accessible, affordable senior housing, Lord explains.

“Silver Key CEO/President Pat Ellis estimates we currently have 15,000 seniors looking for affordable homes in El Paso County,” he adds, pointing to last fall’s headlines when longtime senior residents of Emerald Towers were notified they had 60 – later 90 days – to find a new place to live.

Many found high rents and low supply. One option is to build more single-story homes where people can age in place. Innovations’ Housing and Outdoor Spaces committee is working with the local HBA on an accessibility checklist and certification process, Lord explains.

Innovative options like tiny or “accessory homes” are also under discussion. Until now, local building codes have not allowed construction of tiny homes in the city; they’ve also prohibited separate casita-type residences on the same lot as a larger home.

“There’s an intergenerational opportunity here,” Lord says. “We believe that, if allowed, these buildings might start out as an affordable place for young people to live – maybe next to their parents’ home. Later on, the same unit could be used by aging family members.”

Intergenerational living is frequently promoted

The Pikes Peak National Veterans Cemetery will be located east of Marksheffel Road between Bradley and Drennan Roads.

Pikes Peak National Veterans Cemetery Committee chairman Vic Fernandez It’s taken 18 years, but Vic Fernandez is finally seeing the dream he and fellow veterans Ralph McCutchen and Joseph Henjum had when they spearheaded an initiative back in May 1999 to establish a veterans cemetery in Southern Colorado.

Phase one of construction on the Pikes Peak National Veterans Cemetery began back in October.

Completion of the cemetery is scheduled for the fall of 2019, Fernandez said.

McCutchen and Henjum have since passed away, meanwhile, Fernandez was starting to worry he wouldn’t live long enough to see it all come to fruition.

“I turned 80 this year,” Fernandez said. “I wasn’t sure I was going to

make it to be buried in (the cemetery).”

The new cemetery will serve the burial needs of more than 95,000 veterans and their spouses in the cemetery’s service area for the next 100 years. The Pikes Peak National Cemetery is the third Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) national cemetery in the state. The site is located east of Marksheffel Road between Bradley and Drennan roads.

Phase one will accommodate 10,000 burials and/or inurnments, according to Fernandez. It also includes an entryway, gate and wall for the roadside section next to Drennan. That first section will be ready for early burials and funerals in the fall of 2018, added Fernandez, who’s a retired Army colonel that served two tours in the Vietnam War. He, McCutchen and Henjum worked on getting approval for the cemetery for 10 years to no avail.

CEMETERY/from page 9 Then U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn got involved, and with the help of Southern Colorado politicians Ken and John Salazar, the plan picked up some momentum, Fernandez said.

There was still a huge hurdle, however.

The VA had a rule that forbid a new cemetery to cover a community within 75 miles of Fort Logan, leaving Southern Colorado veterans no other option. Fate intervened, however, changing all that, according to Fernandez.

A hearing was scheduled for May 2, 2008 with the VA. The VA brass led

by Undersecretary William Tuerk arrived in Denver. As they drove south, the first flakes fell around Castle Rock. They hit Monument hill in a blizzard.

The committee heard convincing arguments from Fernandez and others.

Widows complained about the tough trip to Denver for mourners. But the storm VA bosses crawled through on Interstate 25 was the best evidence, Fernandez said.

For Fernandez, the cemetery means he won’t have to be buried in Trinidad, where he was born and raised.

“That makes me happy as a veteran,” he said. “This was a longtime coming. It needed to be done.”

Paul Lagrange has been hired to serve as the cemetery’s director, according to Fernandez. Lagrange has 33 years of active and reserved duty experience as a veteran. He’ll arrive this month to begin his duties, Fernandez said.

“There’s still work to be done,” he added.

The Story of Valentine’s Day

A anything and are medicated way beyond reason. Yes, we can do 100 squats in a CrossFit session. Yes, we can lift heavy weights and run five miles a day. But we can’t eat a freakin’ sandwich without getting the runs and breaking out in hives.

Now I’m asking myself, “Is this what healthy is supposed to feel like?”

FIRST, THE BAD NEWS.

As the New Year turns a corner, many of you have considered joining a gym and getting in shape. That’s great. But if, after all the diet and exercise, you still have stubborn belly fat, irritable bowels, fatigue and food sensitivities, you may have an unhealthy gut. The point of getting in shape is not just to look good; you should feel good too.

Without a healthy digestive system, your body won’t be able to recover.

Your supplements, protein powders and expensive veggie drinks will simply slide unused through a skinny hallway of nearly petrified fecal matter (your colon) and into Colorado Springs’ septic system.

Well … that’s one way your money goes back to the city government!

IN PART TWO …

True health begins on the inside.

In my next column, since this is about fitness, I will address exercises that you can do to strengthen your gut and colon. Plus, I’ll share a valuable checklist so you can be sure you’re using safe, healthy methods for muscle recovery and regeneration.

A NEW YEAR’S SURPRISE

Had to share … I wandered in to a large, commercial gym about a week ago, and I was pleasantly surprised to see all the “over 50” faces! About 70 percent of the morning rush crowd appeared to be over 50 … and most looked over 60!

These weren’t newcomers either. My sweaty “over 60” compadres outlasted me on the cardio machines.

So I tip my hat to you; you’re kicking my butt!

pproximately 250 years after Jesus was born in Bethlehem, there was a priest by the name of Valentine. He lived in Rome.

At that time, Claudius was the Emperor of Rome. Some people called him Claudius the Cruel. St. Valentine didn’t like Emperor Claudius, and he wasn’t the only one! Many people felt the same way. Claudius wanted a big army. He thought men should volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to leave home and go off to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their girlfriends and wives.

So, not many men volunteered for the Roman army. This made Emperor Claudius very angry. He had a crazy idea that if men were not married, they would be more inclined to join his army. So Claudius decreed that there would be no more marriages. Young people thought his new law was really cruel. Valentine thought it was ridiculous! One of his favorite duties as a priest was to marry people. After Emperor Claudius passed his law, Valentine kept on performing marriage ceremonies – but secretly. He would whisper the words of the ceremony,

while listening for soldiers on the steps outside.

One night, Valentine did hear footsteps at his door. The couple he was marrying escaped, but he was caught.

He was thrown in jail and told that his punishment was death.

St. Valentine tried to stay cheerful.

Many young people came to the jail to visit him. They threw flowers and notes up to his window. They wanted him to know that they, too, believed in love. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit him in his cell. They often sat and talked for hours. She believed he did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and performing marriage ceremonies.

On the day Valentine was to die, he left her a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it, “Love from your Valentine.” That note started the custom of exchanging love notes on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day he died, Feb. 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship.

When they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh — because they know that love can’t be beaten!

Number of February dances sure to cure lonely heart blues

By Carol Thompson Nothing is lonelier than Valentine’s Day alone. If you’re tired of the single bar scene, online dating fiascos where the photo 20 years ago doesn’t match up with the current-day reality and looking for love or just more life in your ... everyday existence, change what you are doing.

Try one of these options for a livelier 2018 and remember this: Real men dance! And for men, dancing makes you a total chick magnet even if you are in your golden years.

The Colorado Springs Senior Center doesn’t do bingo. What it does offer is lots of opportunities for social interaction with members of the opposite sex. Dances, for instance, beginning with the Valentine’s Dance coming up Feb.9, from 6 to 8 p.m. with the Oasis Band playing the dance tunes. Refreshments, of course.

Partners not required.

You will find lots of potential partners at the dance. Attractive single ladies and a few good men (but not enough!)The Senior Center is located on Hancock Road (I-25 to Uintah east exit, then north on Hancock.) Cost is a reasonable $5. Leather-soled shoes help protect the wooden dance floor.

Pikes Peak USA Dance is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting ballroom dance across the nation.

Their Valentine Dance starts Feb. 17, with a 6 to 7 p.m. dance class followed by a 7 to 10 p.m. dance.

Swingmasters Jazz Band invites prospective new members to rehearsal For Life After 50 Bill Callen’s Pikes Peak New Horizons Band, comprised of the Gold Concert Band (55 – 60 musicians with brass, woodwinds and percussion) and the Swingmasters Jazz Band (17 musicians) is inviting prospective new band members to meet Bill Callen the founder and director of the band and Gold Concert Band members, Feb. 6 or Feb. 8 prior to a rehearsal.

Rehearsals begin at 9:45 a.m.

McAllister House hires new executive director Metzger For Life After 50 The McAllister House Museum announcef Jan. 24 that Eric Metzger has been hired as the organization’s first executive director.

Metzger brings with him over 20 years of museum experience, most recently as the museum services director at the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum in Boston, Massachusetts.

The executive director position at the McAllister House was facilitated by a multi-year operating grant from El Pomar Foundation.

In this new position, Metzger is charged with bringing greater visibility to the McAllister House Museum and implementing the organization’s strategic vision. Metzger also will spearhead new marketing, and development initiatives for the organization.

Metzger has spent most of his life along the Front Range preserving and interpreting cultural resources in both non-profit and for-profit organizations. As an archaeologist and a museum professional, he has been associated with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, University of Colorado at Boulder, Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, Lamanai Field Research Center (Belize), the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard, and the Robbins Museum of Archaeology.

“I’m very pleased to be home in Colorado and working for the McAllister House Museum which has demonstrated such a strong passion for preserving and interpreting Pikes Peak regional history for more than 50 years,” Metzger said.

At the first house, a woman complained, “I’ve been a little sick to my stomach.”

The older doctor said, “Well, you’ve probably been overdoing the fresh fruit. Why not cut back on the amount you’ve been eating and see if that does the trick?”

As they left the house, the younger man said, “You didn’t even examine that woman. How’d you come to that diagnosis so quickly?”

“I didn’t have to examine her,” he replied. “Did you notice when I dropped my stethoscope on the floor in there? When I bent over to pick it up, I noticed a half-dozen banana peels in the trash. That was what probably was making her sick.”

“Pretty clever,” the younger doctor said. “I think I’ll try that at the next house.”

At the next house, they spent several minutes talking with a younger woman. She complained that she just didn’t have the energy she once did, and said, “I’m feeling terribly rundown lately.”

“You’ve probably been doing too much work for the church,” the younger doctor told her. “Perhaps you should cut back a bit and see if that helps.”

As they left, the elder doctor said, “I know that woman well. Your diagnosis is almost certainly correct, but how did you arrive at it?”

“I did what you did at the last house,” he said. “I dropped my stethoscope and when I bent down to retrieve it, I noticed the preacher under the bed.”

Serves: 8 • 4 pounds chicken wings • 2 T baking powder • 1 t salt • nonstick cooking spray • 4 T unsalted butter, melted • 1/2 c hot sauce • 1/2 c blue cheese or ranch dressing • 1/3 c blue cheese Crumbles • carrots • celery Lay wings on rack on rimmed baking tray and let dry in refrigerator overnight, or pat dry with paper towels.

Heat oven to 250 F. Put one oven shelf in lower quarter of oven and one in top quarter.

Place wings in large re-sealable bag. Add baking powder and salt.

Shake bag to coat wings evenly.

Line tray with foil. Spray rack on baking tray with nonstick spray. Place wings skin side up on rack. Bake on lower shelf 30 minutes.

Move tray to higher shelf and turn oven up to 425 F. Bake 40-50 minutes, rotating tray halfway through. Wings are done when they are dark, golden brown and skin is crispy.

While wings bake, whisk together butter and hot sauce; keep warm.

Remove wings from oven and toss with hot sauce; sprinkle immediately with blue cheese crumbles. Serve with blue cheese or ranch dressing, carrots and celery sticks.
