Day 1 - Depart Colorado Springs for Lincoln, Nebraska. We’ll stop in Ogallala, Nebraska for lunch and visit Front Street, a beautiful replicated block of the old west. Ogallala was the end of the cattle trail, where Texas cowboys drove their herds to meet the Union Pacific Railroad. Overnight in Lincoln.

Day 2 - Our destination for today is Moline, Illinois. Along the way, we’ll stop in Leighton, Iowa, for lunch and a guided tour of the Tassel Ridge Winery and vineyards. We’ll dine in their greenhouse, overlooking the beautiful vineyards. After lunch and our wine tasting, we’ll tour the winery and, if weather permits, their vineyards, as well. Day 3 - This morning, we’ll tour the Isabel Bloom studio. Isabel was a well known sculpture artist who created beautiful designs of animals and children. During our tour we’ll have behind-the-scenes access to every step of this loving process and discover why her beautiful sculptures continue to be treasured to this day. After our studio tour, we move on to a tour of the John Deere Pavilion and learn about John Deere, the man, who used his skills and knowledge as a blacksmith to change the course of farming. We’ll experience the machines up close along with the history and innovation of this remarkable company. We continue on to the Amana Colonies, a National Historic Landmark which was formed in 1856 when German Pietists came to the United States to escape religious persecution in their homeland. Their 26,000 acre colony still stands to this day. We’ll spend the remainder of the day here, complete with an in-depth tour, wine tasting, lunch and dinner served in the local traditions, with plenty of time for shopping the many lovely boutique shops.

Day 4 - This morning we make our way to Pella, Iowa, for their annual Tulip Festival! With over 200,000 tulips in bloom we’ll feel as though we’ve traveled back in time as we see thousands of local residents dress in Dutch attire to celebrate their Dutch heritage. While here, we will see windmills, antique autos, parades, quilts, Pella’s sunken garden, antiques, historic villages, old grist mill, Wyatt Earp house, Woodworking, Blacksmithing, Spinning, and much, much more!

Day 5 - This morning is free time on your own at the Tulip Festival. You’ll have an opportunity to taste delicious homemade baked goods, browse the numerous boutique shops filled with imports, or roam Klokkenspel Plaza, boasting thousands of colorful tulips and deft murals. After lunch, we say goodbye to Pella and head towards Kansas City, where we’ll overnight.

Day 6 - After breakfast we’ll head to the National WWI Museum and memorial. This is a fabulous museum dedicated to the 4.7 million men who fought for our country. We’ll enjoy a guided tour, as well as free time to explore. Your ticket also includes the Liberty Memorial Tower, which rises 268 feet and offers an open-air observation deck for breathtaking views of the Kansas City skyline. After lunch at the museum, we’ll continue on to the Russell Stover outlet store, selling the entire line of Russell Stover candies. Day 7 - Heading for home, we’ll stop at the historic Cathedral of the Plains, located in Victoria, Kansas. Dating back to 1921, this lovely church has an interesting history which we’ll learn all about from our tour guide. After lunch in Colby, it’s home to Colorado Springs.

Holiday season is in full swing!

Shops are full of bright and cheery displays, irresistible deals, and the same 20 songs, eternally remixed. This familiarity brings comfort, even as we wrestle to keep our real values at the forefront. We invite you to take a moment here with us to pause from the hurried pace of shopping and parties and reflect on the deeper values of this season.

Tradition. The older we get, the more we recognize the value of tradition.

Traditions connect us to our ancestors and our cultural roots. They remind us of what we and our family have valued. Traditions can act as a glue, bringing people together and gifting harmony, even if just for a season. They help to ground us and humble us as we remember we are just a passing generation in a long line of human history.

Our office has a tradition of sending get well, sympathy, or congratulation cards to our patients as we become aware of those occasions. The cards are individually and meaningfully hand signed by each member of our team.

Giving. It is more blessed to give than to receive. Learning the art of self-sacri-

fice as you save up to buy gifts for others teaches you how you need so much less than you think. It is also another way to show love for others as you carefully go without to give to someone else. Thoughtfully considering each loved one and what they would enjoy the most gives us an opportunity to really see them. Of course, we also enjoy watching the excitement and surprise as our loved ones open their gifts. Giving allows a type of connection that is unique. It offers the chance for the giver to put their own desires aside for the receiver. In return, the receiver must choose to be humble and vulnerable, accepting the love of another as it is offered. Our office truly loves to give whenever and however we can. Every year we enjoy participating in COMOM, Colorado Mission of Mercy.

COMOM is an annual event where volunteers (dentists, clinicians, hygienists, dental administrative personnel, and general volunteers) all gather to provide 2 days of

free oral healthcare to those in need. For 2018, nearly 1500 adults and children were provided more than $1,000,000 in donated care in Grand Junction. 2020 will be held in Canyon City. Our office helps community workers, veterans, and those that are struggling by providing affordable and life-changing care.

Community. December is also a time when we remember that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

Food and toy drives help spread cheer throughout the entire community. People are a little kinder to one another. People take time to be with and see those in their communities through parties and well-wishing cards. It can be easy to forget in our independent and self-sufficient world that we are all interdependent. The season invites you to remember and respect our community.

One way we respect our community is by providing a space for local dental professionals to consult with one another on

difficult or interesting cases once a month.

The community we are able to build in these meetings also allows us to offer higher quality care as we collaborate together. Additionally, we work specifically with the Special Needs community to ensure that they consistently get quality care.

On November 13, 2019 we were honored and blessed to be selected by THE INDEPENDENCE CENTER as a recipient of their Certificate of Appreciation award.

This included receiving a Versalift, a tilt lift for wheelchairs, enabling the person in the wheelchair to be tilted back into a reclining position. This allows for more patient comfort, as well as, comfort for the care provider.

For retired teacher Kathleen “Kay” Esmiol everything is a teaching moment, and one in particular is how the downtown statue of Fannie Mae Duncan came to exist.

After writing a play about Duncan, students in Esmiol’s Eagleview Middle School Young Writers’ Club were inspired by the African American entrepreneur, activist and philanthropist. “The kids said she ought to have a statue,” Esmiol recalled. That was 1993.

In October, the 6-foot, one-inch, 320-pound bronze sculpture was dedicated in front of the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts at 190 S. Cascade Ave., near where Duncan’s jazz club, the Cotton Club, had operated for 28 years. The building was razed for urban renewal in 1975.

The middle schoolers are credited with the statue idea, but Esmiol, who planted the seed by introducing them to Duncan, ultimately saw it through

to fruition. Esmiol taught English and advised extracurricular activities in Air Academy School District 20 for 25 years; she hasn’t slowed down.

She’s quick to mention being 81 years old, and her knowledge of Duncan, and others connected to Colorado Springs history, is matched only by her determination to get things done – and done quickly.

Duncan died in 2005 but not before the two women became friends.

The former teacher wrote a book about Duncan entitled “Everybody Welcome” based on the businesswoman’s credo. “Her door was open to everyone,” Esmiol said. “She and I refused to believe you can’t solve problems.” For both, this meant bringing people together through the arts.

Once her book was published in 2013, Esmiol was often asked to speak to various groups about Duncan’s life.

“I began giving lectures, I’m still giving talks,” Esmiol said. “I wanted

“At first I thought we’d get an organization behind it (the statue),” Esmiol said. “Then I reached a point where I just said ‘I’m doing this!’”

The Fannie Mae Duncan Statue Committee, comprised of four other former educators and two advisors, was established in 2017. Although Esmiol’s Eagleview students raised $2,000 in seed money, the committee covered the early operating costs to launch the project.

Committee members include Judy Casey, Sharyn Markus, Pam Marsh, Cindy Walsh, Claudean Bragg-Brooks and Lou Mellini.

The committee began researching sculptors, toured a foundry in Loveland and attended the Loveland Sculpture in the Park exhibition. “I had researched all the sculptors beforehand,” Esmiol said.

“There were seven I was pretty sure could do it. When we got to Lori (Kiplinger Pandy) I knew we had found the right one.”

That proved to be among the easier items to cross off the to-do list. Esmiol knew the most appropriate place for the piece was in front of the Pikes Peak Center. After giving a presentation to the El Paso County Board of Commissioners she was disappointed immediate approval wasn’t granted. “I knew we would lose the artist, lose the slot in the foundry and lose too much time if a decision wasn’t made immediately,” she explained.

Although she’d been told it wasn’t possible for a decision to be made regarding the location, she refused to settle for a delay.

“I had established myself as indomitable,” she said. “I knew it could be done. We did get the land the day we asked for it.”

Kiplinger Pandy wanted the statue placed in the middle of the sidewalk with the open pathway of the Pikes Peak Center in the background to reflect Duncan’s “Everybody Welcome” ideology. That, too, met with some resistance, until Esmiol pointed out “There’s a man on a horse in the middle of Nevada Avenue.”

Thanks to underwriting from the Nor’wood Foundation, grants and gifts from numerous foundations, organizations and individuals, along with the efforts of Esmiol, the committee and civic leaders, the statue is in place. More than 700 persons attended the dedication, including 40 members of Duncan’s family who came from around the world. Several students involved in writing the play all those years ago were also present.

Esmiol’s goal throughout the entire process, first from teaching students about Duncan and later giving lectures about her life, is to ensure no one forgets Duncan’s presence in Colorado Springs.

The statue safeguards against that.

Area Agency on Aging at PPACG receives grant to bring Sunshine Home Share to Colorado Springs For Life After 50 The PPACG Area Agency on Aging has been awarded a grant from the NextFifty Initiative to begin implementation of a home sharing program in the Colorado Springs area.

The organization will partner with the nonprofit Sunshine Home Share to provide resources and solutions for seniors on both sides of the housing market, the senior looking for a housemate and the senior looking for an affordable housing option.

Combining the resources of the Area Agency on Aging and Sunshine Home Share will result in a collaborative housing option for seniors to find individualized housing solutions.

“We are thrilled that our home sharing initiative for older adults in our community has received this grant from NextFifty Initiative,” said Andrew Gunning, Executive Director of the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments. “With the foundation’s support we can now provide another option for our residents to age in place with additional supports and friendship.”

• Think about days in elementary school, or the earliest days of your life you can. What seemed alluring but got lost in the shuffle of arithmetic and recess? Can you remember any of those flights of fancy as you lay on our rug during rest time?

• Go to the library and get a book

on something you’ve always said to yourself you can’t understand. For me, one subject would be physics. But there are people, famous people, who think it a worthy subject to learn about. Why not?

• Take risks, ask questions, don’t avoid looking dumb. Since I don’t watch the news and only see highlights on the internet, in conversations with friends I find myself asking, “Who’s that?” or “What’s that about?” They smile and explain. The courage to ask must be one of those “new skills” we can learn.

This is a time of shifting. And we can make it a gift.

He creates original compositions in rock and classical styles, and he has supported numerous other musicians over the years. He plays

He also performs solo classical guitar regularly at the Cliff House in Manitou. From tightly structured classical pieces to “anything goes” improvisation, he welcomes the opportunities.

hen it comes to formal music education, guitarist Wayne Hammerstadt describes himself as “the world’s worst student.”

However, as a student of music in every other sense, he is clearly quite the opposite. Curiosity and a willingness to learn seem to be at the heart of what he does. His enthusiasm for music of all kinds has made him a well-rounded musician. His skill and versatility have made him a respected figure on the Colorado Springs music scene. And his ability to think outside the box has led to success as a promoter of local events.

His early musical influences include many of the most recognizable names in classic rock.

However, it was in exploring those bands’ influences that his own palate was expanded.

“All of the people I listened to were people that opened the door to other things.”

When he was in his early teens, Wayne’s family moved to Europe while his father served in the Air Force. They spent 7 years there, and he describes it as a second home. His experiences broadened his perspective in many ways. Traveling to various countries, he experienced first-hand the different cultures and environments. Inevitably, he found music in many settings. From street performances to bar shows to big name concerts in more formal venues, opportunities were everywhere.

“It was a good time to be living in central Europe,” he says. “There was a lot of great music

While the frequent and varied gigs have earned him recognition, it’s his role as an organizer and promoter that has made him an especially valuable asset to the local music scene. He produces and promotes events, and he handles booking for other bands. For the last several summers, he has helped coordinate the University Village Concert Series, Concerts in the Park (Monument), and Lakeside Concerts (Forest Lakes in Monument).

Wayne’s experience with promotion began rather casually and unexpectedly. Years ago, following a gig in a shopping center bar, it occurred to him that the parking lot where he was loading his gear might be a good place for an outdoor gig. Upon contacting the owner, he was told that there was an amphitheater right in the shopping center. Wayne offered to organize three shows (the three bands he was in at the time!), but the owner was interested in even more.

Thus, from what was essentially a fluke, came an opportunity to “rethink the wheel.”

“I started getting involved in some non-traditional models of the way people would present music.” Focusing on shared spaces, as opposed to bars and clubs, would allow musicians to

bring the music to the community in new ways.

The insight he gained has helped him be more proactive in creating and promoting music. And in a music scene of any size, such skills are essential. He acknowledges that business and promotion don’t come naturally to a lot of artists, but encourages engaging in the organization process.

“It’s good to stay close to how it all works- understanding and being involved in all the different aspects.”

He enjoys seeing the Colorado Springs music scene growing, and he believes that it has the potential to be among the best in the country. With several outdoor concert series, the region’s natural beauty can serve as a perfect setting. And with established venues such as Stargazers and newer ones such as Ent Center for the Arts and Boot Barn Hall, the variety of options is only increasing.

“If I can stay in the game,” he says, “I might not have to get a haircut and real job!”

John: The key is dressing in layers. If it’s going to be really cold, I might have four or five layers; a tight Lycra type running shirt underneath, and a long sleeved shirt over that, and maybe a sweatshirt. If it’s really cold I might add a windbreak vest under-

neath, or as an outer layer. The inner layers are going to get wet when you sweat. The outer layers absorb the squishy moisture and keep that sweat warm.

Vicki: If somebody has to stop during a really cold run for any reason, what are some survival techniques for not freezing to death?

FITNESS/from page 16 you’ll be fine. If you have to stop and walk, there will be a problem because you’re going to cool down really quick. So don’t stop. You’ll be in trouble. I’ve done mountains runs where it was so steep I couldn’t run anymore.

My feet were “postholing” (sinking knee deep into the snow). In that scenario, I did get cold really fast, and I couldn’t feel my feet. But once I pressed up to the top, I could start running again and my feet warmed up after about 20 minutes. But you have to stay moving. If you’re not going to be able to stay moving, then you shouldn’t go where you’re going to be isolated like that.

Vicki: What about the head, ears and neck?

John: One of the keys to staying warm for me is a neck sweater, and then a headband and a regular ski hat.

The neck sweater keeps the wind from going down my shirt, and then I can pull it up over your face. The back of the neck tends to stay warm, but the front of the neck tends to get damp when you breathe into it. With a neck sweater, I can rotate it around. I like the neck sweater better than a ski mask because I like to be able to pull it down, pull it up and rotate it to the back to thaw out as needed.

I use a headband for the ears, or a regular hat, and sunglasses for the

eyes. Goggles tend to steam up. Again, movement is key because the wind will keep your sunglasses from fogging up.

Well, as the song says, “There’s no fitness like snow fitness”. There are great memories to be made in the snow, but they should be positive memories, not negative ones. So have fun, stay safe, and enjoy these tips as you do.

I feel compelled to remind you, that running on ice and in extreme cold weather is dangerous and should not be done. 1/2 c walnuts, chopped 1 English cucumber (about 14 oz.)

1/2 cup roasted red pepper hummus 1/2 cup reduced-fat crumbled feta cheese 5 cherry tomatoes, quartered Heat oven to 350 F. On small baking sheet, arrange walnuts evenly.

Bake 8 minutes, checking frequently, until toasted.

Slice cucumber crosswise into 3/4-inch thick slices. Using small spoon, gently scoop out and discard center of each cucumber slice, leaving bottom and sides intact.

In small bowl, stir 6 tablespoons chopped walnuts and hummus. Spoon walnut-hummus mixture into each cucumber slice and top with reserved chopped walnuts, feta cheese and quartered tomatoes.

Why losing sleep is bad for your heart For Life After 50

I

n recent years, numerous studies have shown that people who don’t get enough sleep are at greater risk for strokes and heart attacks.

A new University of Colorado Boulder study helps explain why.

It found that people who sleep fewer than seven hours per night have lower blood levels of three physiological regulators, or microRNAs, which influence gene expression and play a key role in maintaining vascular health.

The findings could potentially lead to new, non-invasive tests for sleep-deprived patients concerned about their health, the authors said.

“This study proposes a new potential mechanism through which sleep influences heart health and overall physiology,” said senior author Christopher DeSouza, a professor of Integrative Physiology at University of Colorado at Boulder.

Despite recommendations by the American Heart Association that people get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, about 40 percent of adults in the U.S. fall short.

Overall, the average American’s sleep duration has plummeted from 9 hours to 6.8 hours nightly over the past century.

The study found that people with insufficient sleep had 40 to 60 percent lower circulating levels of miR-125A, miR-126, and miR-146a, than those who slept enough. adult men who sleep six hours per night have dysfunctional endothelial cells—the cells that line blood vessels—and their arteries don’t dilate and constrict as well as those who get sufficient sleep.

But the underlying factors leading to this dysfunction aren’t well known.

MicroRNAs are small molecules that suppress gene expression of certain proteins in cells. The exact function of circulating microRNAs in the cardiovascular system, and their impact on cardiovascular health, is receiving a lot of scientific attention.

Drugs are currently in development for a variety of diseases, including cancer, to correct impaired microRNA signatures.

For the new study, which is the first to explore the impact of insufficient sleep on circulating microRNA signatures, DeSouza and his team took

blood samples from 24 healthy men and women, age 44 to 62, who had filled out questionnaires about their sleep habits. Half slept 7 to 8.5 hours nightly; half slept 5 to 6.8 hours nightly.

They measured the expression of nine microRNAs previously associated with inflammation, immune function or vascular health.

The study found that people with insufficient sleep had 40 to 60 percent lower circulating levels of miR-125A, miR-126, and miR-146a, than those who slept enough.

“Why seven or eight hours seems to be the magic number is unclear,” said DeSouza.

“However, it is plausible that people need at least seven hours of sleep per night to maintain levels of important physiological regulators.”

Research is now underway in DeSouza’s lab to determine whether restoring healthy sleep habits can restore healthy levels of microRNAs. Ultimately, he said, it’s possible that microRNAs in blood could be used as a marker of cardiovascular disease in people with insufficient sleep, enabling doctors to glean important information via a blood test rather than current, more invasive tests.

For now, DeSouza’s message for those burning the midnight oil is this: “Don’t underestimate the importance of a good night’s sleep.”

If you’re like me, you’ve noticed something missing in your mailbox the past couple decades.

Mixed among the bills, campaign promises, ads and junk mail was the occasional hand-addressed, stamped envelope that stood out like a special treasure. You’d drop all other mail and excitedly open it first—the personal thank you note. Remember those days?

What used to be a token of gratitude and thoughtfulness is now a thing of the past.

With the advent of e-mail, text messaging and social media, our communication has become impersonal and shallow. “Thank you” has been abbreviated to “Thx” all for the sake of time so the sender can get back to me, myself and I. Where one email looks like the next, the small effort behind a hand-written note gives a personal, thoughtful touch and tells the receiver they matter.

Also unlike texts or emails, you can hold personal thank you notes in your hands, reliving a happy moment or recapturing an embrace. While emails and texts are usually read and deleted, thank you notes have lasting value—sitting on counters like a generous smile that can be read and reread.

Some people I know just naturally get it. They understand that sending a personal note is the right thing to do.

It’s a way of returning kindness with kindness. To others, writing a thank you note is a foreign concept. I’ve heard many friends comment about not even knowing if wedding, birthday or baby shower gifts have been received due to lack of acknowledgement.

Where have we gone wrong? Why do so few people send thank you notes anymore?

Some people think it’s the new normal, but some of us think it’s lazy and rude. It’s all about priorities.

Studies show that penning a thank you note is a good way to lift the receiver’s spirits as well as your own.

Showing gratitude is good for self-esteem and benefits your physical and psychological health. Handwritten, personal notes speak volumes—they can strengthen relationships or turn an acquaintance into a friend.

Thank you notes are for more than just receiving a gift. It warms my heart when I receive thank you notes from dear friends for unsolicited help at a garage sale, a fun evening at dinner, games and laughs, or for just being their friend. No text or email could ever take the place of that personal touch.

Is there hope for reviving this intimate act of appreciation? As seniors, are we being good role models of supporting a lost etiquette by writing thank you notes ourselves? Modeling gratitude is one of the most special gifts we can give children. The impact of living by example will cause thankfulness to grow in their hearts.

I Love My Pet

M

y name is Anvar and this is my story. I was born at a small farm in the Pamir mountains of Tajikistan in April 2006. Life was warm and secure at first, but then boys and dogs chased me from my home and I became lost.

I was wounded, hungry, and my beautiful black and white coat eventually became brown from malnutrition and dirty from living on the streets.

In one village, I tried to find food outside of a restaurant but was unsuccessful. Then I thought, maybe I’ll find food across the street. But just as I was crossing the road, I decided to stop right in the middle of it and sit down. There were no cars and I had the whole place to myself, so why not?

That’s when an American woman came up to me. She petted and talked to me gently. I gave her a flirtatious look with my golden eyes and purred.

The next thing I knew, I was on a week-long road trip with her and her buddies throughout Tajikistan. I was

At night, I had the whole car to myself with a warm bed, food, and most importantly, a private commode. After the road trip, I stayed for two months with a Tajik foster family, where with love and proper nutrition, my wounds healed, I gained weight, and my coat returned to its original black and white color.

They gave me toys, such as a plastic chess piece, which I still have today. One night, the American woman came for me at the home of my foster family—I was going to America! It was a long trip, but being a seasoned traveler, it was no big deal.

For over a decade now, I’ve now been living in the land of Petco and PetSmart where they cater to my every whim. I consider myself fully Americanized now, meaning I express my opinion about everything. I only have one issue though that’s been bugging me since the road trip, why did my mom give me a Tajik boys’ name when I’m a girl?

“Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it and then for the rest of the game, all they kept screaming was: ‘Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!’ It’s only 25 cents!”

3 a.m. Hunting partners arrive and drag me out of bed. We throw everything in pickup.

3:30 a.m. Leave for the deep woods, and beautiful backcountry and mountains.

5 a.m. Furiously drive back home alone to pick up my gun and license.

Drive like mad to get back before daylight.

6:30 a.m. Set up my camp.

7 a.m. Head into the deep woods.

Spot eight elk moving toward me.

Now within range.

7:37 a.m. Take careful aim at lead

bull, hold breath and gently squeeze trigger. Click!

7:38 a.m. Frantically load gun while watching trophy bull and seven elk go over the hill.

9 a.m. Head back to camp for coffee break.

10 a.m. Still looking for camp.

Realize I don’t know where camp is.

11:58 a.m. Fire three shots, the signal for help. Notice wild berries.

Eat wild berries.

12:05 p.m. Fire three more shots.

Run out of shells. Eight elk come back.

12:45 p.m. Strange feeling in stomach. Realize I must have eaten poisonous berries.

1:35 p.m. Rescued! They rush me to nearest hospital to get stomach pumped.

Small brown bottle

The other day I went to my nearby pharmacy. When I got there, I went straight to the back of the store to where the pharmacist’s counter is located. I took out my little brown bottle along with a teaspoon and laid them both on the counter.

The pharmacist came over, smiled and asked if he could help me.

“Yes,” I said. “Could you please taste this for me?”

Being that I’m a senior citizen, I guess the pharmacist decided it was 21st November safe to go along with me. He picked up the spoon and put a tiny bit of the liquid on his tongue and swilled it around. Then with a stomach-churning look on his face, he spit it out on the floor and began coughing.

When he finally finished, I looked him right in the eye and asked, “Now does that taste sweet to you?”

The pharmacist, shaking his head back and forth, said, “Hell no.”

So I said, “Oh, thank God! That’s a real relief. My doctor told me to get a pharmacist to test my urine for sugar!”

A puppy for my dog & cat?

Dear Flummoxed, Yes, they can get along! Going slowly with a little thoughtful planning, training, and enrichment will give you a happy pet family.

Planning

• Match your puppy’s personality.

If she is calm and trainable, active but not hyper, things will go faster and be easier to maintain with Jack.

• Jack’s routines. Keep them positive and consistent, uninterrupted

by Aussie and the puppy. Does Jack sleep with you at night? Can you brush and cuddle before bedtime?

Maintaining this will help keep him happy and confident.

• Jack’s enrichment. This includes individual time and attention from you, interesting toys in his environment, and challenging things to do on his own.

• Vertical territory. Jack needs ways to get to safe, high spaces so he can go up when he feels the need. Cat trees and shelving should be a part of his environment.

• Safe Room. Jack also needs a place he can go to when he wants complete separation from the puppy.

Training

This is most important, and includes learning that only gentle play is allowed. She must be trained to stop when Jack is done playing.

Adult dogs can be ten to eighty pounds heavier than an adult cat. This would be like you trying to play with a giant three stories tall! A dog can injure or even kill a cat accidently,

Pet gates will allow Jack to get away from the puppy. Your training plan also needs to include leash-training, as well as the basic commands of “Sit” and “Stay.”

Slow Introductions

Anytime you bring in a new pet to a home with a cat, a slow and careful plan should be in place.

Cats need to feel safe and confident in their territory. In the wild, they are predators but also prey. This hardwires them to be suspicious of many animals, and protective against would-be foes.

• Rotate territory. At first, alternate letting Jack and the puppy out in your home’s open areas. This allows both of them time to safely explore each other’s scents.

• Use the gate. After a few days, if Jack is acting normally, let him start to view the puppy through the pet gate.

This allows him to investigate her on his own terms, as close or far away as he wants.

• Reward, reward, reward. Be ready with great toys and treats to distract the puppy from getting too excited at seeing Jack.

• Control the introduction. Once Jack trusts the puppy and there has been sufficient puppy training, you can slowly introduce them without the gate.

Never leave a new dog and cat alone together until you are absolutely sure the cat is safe!

By planning ahead and paying attention to the reactions of all three pets, your new puppy will be a loved member of the family in no time!

wondered what Chip and Ernie might want for Christmas.

As I moved past the well-stocked shelves of candy-cane striped onesies, hoodies emblazoned with “Spoiled Rotten” or “Momma’s Boy,” and faux-Ugg fashion boots in the crowded store, I cringed. Nope— not canine apparel. Because Ernie is on a restricted diet for his liver disease, Pup-Peronis, Beggin’ Strips and Grillers were out of the question.

And with his bad back and worn teeth, Chip can no longer engage in his obsession with fetching. The Frisbees, footballs and flying squirrels are a thing of the past, unfortunately.

The pet beds gave me pause, and boggled my mind. There are so many kinds of beds! The novelty of a dog “sofa” tickled my funny bone. I pictured Ernie lounging in front of “Lucky Dog” or “Vet Gone Wild” on TV. But figured I’d need one for Chip, too. No room for two of them in our small den. The luxurious orthopedic beds with Memory Foam seemed ideal for my two boys’ senior bones. The cost, however, shivered me timbers. Besides-- Ernie still nestles peacefully into his flabby and furry berth nightly. And Chip slumbers and snores with my husband and I, on our own bed.

What about a DNA test? After all, their mom’s breed was a complete mystery. Yvette was an emaciated waif that was found in a snowy ditch in December of 2006. She was brought to The Animal Clinic of Woodland Park (where I worked as a receptionist) by a Good Samaritan.

As the employee of a veterinary clinic, she became one of my (several) job hazards. Lo and behold, on a snowy January afternoon less than a month after I began fostering her, she gave birth to three strapping boys. While one of the pups

resembles her (Ernie), Chip and brother Robby look nothing like their mom. It might be interesting to see what science says that they are. But for now, the cost of the test is prohibitive.

When I get home and walk through the door empty-handed, Chip and Ernie greet me as if I’m the hero in a big ticker-tape parade. I sit on the floor as they sniff me, frantically nudge my hand to pet them and joust for space in my lap.

They don’t care if I don’t have a new toy for them. Or a new bed.

They could certainly care less if I hadn’t brought them a fancy outfit to wear. They are just happy I’m home with them. As for me, it doesn’t matter if they are a dachshund, retriever or pit bull—I love them just the way they are and for whatever they are. All is well.

The greatest gifts cannot be bought, packaged or wrapped. The greatest gifts are these times we have—right now; in this moment— with our pets, and all our loved ones.

The Fountain Valley Senior Center would like to implement a demand ride (same day rides) program. We have several days where our drivers have idle time; usually mid-mornings. What we would like to start to do is use this idle time for on-demand rides. These rides could be for going shopping at Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Walgreens or even to the park. We would need to keep these rides in the Fountain Valley area. Our transportation history shows; our idle times to be 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. What you need to do: • You would need to sign up for these demand rides in the Transportation office, we do ask for your patience because even though we have some Idle time to fill, if a medical appointment is involved this would have to take priority, this would be rare.

• We would also ask that if you are shopping to keep the bags to what you can carry.

• The rides would need to depart and return to the Senior Center.

• When shopping be ready at the pick times the driver tells you, Very important.

Note: this service might not always be available daily, in lieu of driver call offs.

Last August, when my 96-year-old mom fell at the home she had lived in for 50 years, we realized she needed to move to an independent living community. When we visited Summit Glen, we knew we had found her new home! From the minute she moved in, she has felt precisely that way. She found her new home! Natalie, the community manager, promised us that they would treat mom like she was their mom, and they have fulfilled that promise every single day. Mom has a lovely apartment with a deck. We can’t believe how many of her precious things we were able to bring to that apartment. The storage is amazing! The building is beautiful and always clean. The food is delicious, and mom enjoys visiting with her many new friends at meals. Mom just loves everyone who works there from her housekeeper to the servers and the chef, the activities coordinator, and of course, the wonderful managers.

We feel so blessed to have found the perfect home for mom at Summit Glen! ~ Nancy Daigle I was introduced to one of the managers while visiting my cousin, who also lives here; I liked her immediately. She invited me to move in and “try it out” with no long-term commitment. My daughters all urged me to accept the invitation as they were concerned about my time alone.
