s an adult, the holidays and Christmas time means stress for me. I dread the arrival of holidays each year. However, being the parent of a 7-year-old helps me to find things to enjoy during the holidays. Simply watching him enjoy Christmas makes me happy. My son Jaxson loves singing Christmas tunes (in fact, he started singing “Jingle Bells” back in July). He’s all about the decorations, the tree, the lights, the treats, the
movies, you name it. I’ve also discovered a new calmness during the holidays in the form of watching Hallmark movies with my motherin-law. This strange, newfound pastime has me a little perplexed. But those darn movies are just so uplifting and positive … even though they tend to follow the same storyline: big city girl returns home to the small town she grew up in and falls for a guy who owns a Christmas tree farm or something and then realizes the guy she’s engaged to is a jerk. Something that does cheer me up during the holidays, is remembering how it was when I was a kid. The oldest of four siblings, I did my best to keep the Christmas spirit alive in my two younger brothers Gabriel and Dominic and younger sister Lacey. I made sure they all pitched in to make or buy our parents gifts. I even made sure our pets had some sort of presents at Christmas. We usually all slept in my room Christmas even night

Haggard loves life at the North Pole By Anthony Welch IIt may come as a surprise to some, but Tom Haggard never tires of all things Christmas, including the music. “If the Christmas music is not on, I’ll know it,” the owner of Santa’s Workshop in North Pole, Colorado said. “I’ll even listen to Christmas music in the car when I head home.” Haggard’s parents George and Mary Kay Haggard built the Cascade amusement park back in 1956. Haggard grew up and worked in the Christmas wonderland as a kid. While ventured out and worked at Sears and a few other jobs outside of the park, it’s essentially been his “home” for years. “Most of the other jobs taught me what not to do, instead of what to do. I basically have been here my adult working life, and I still enjoy it,” Haggard said. “I feel lucky that I found something I actually enjoy doing. Most people work jobs they don’t like.” The 67-year-old loves the fact that he always has something to do and that Santa’s Workshop is a business where people come to have fun. “People are having fun at your business as opposed to just buying things, which is fun,” Haggard said. “Lots of older people, who came here as children with their grandparents, are now able to come and experience the park with their grandkids.” The family operation also includes Haggard’s wife Susie and their son Shane and daughter Austin. The Haggards are turning over more and more duties to the two children. Tom isn’t quite ready to call it quits just yet though. “At this point, with my kids it’s, ‘Just tell me when you want me to leave,’” Haggard laughed. “My daughter has two young ones, and my son has a baby on the way. I’m working more now to give them the freedom with their young ones to get all that established.” Running a family business has been a great

experience overall for the Haggard family. “I worked with my mother and father until they died. I always felt it kept us a lot closer because we saw each other every day and worked with each other,” Haggard said. “I think that’s the nice thing. You have a strong relationship with your children because you work with them and see them every day.” Tom has seen a lot of things change while working at the park through the years. “I have to laugh. One of the first jobs I had was putting bumper stickers on peoples’ cars in the parking lot. All the attractions used to put bumper stickers on the cars,” Haggard said. “Nowadays, you sell bumper stickers. When I first started doing it, they weren’t even stickers. They were little plates with two big metal hooks that were bent and draped over the front of the bumper and hooked underneath. Then we went to actual bumper stickers in the late 50s, early 60s.” As a youth, Haggard also cleaned and swept around the park and took care of the North Pole’s animals, which back then, had free run of the place. “The deer herd we had would be in the park and people would feed the deer or the goats,” he said. “Now we have to keep them in a pen, can’t let them

roam anymore because people would chase the deer.” Business wise, the park used to be busy in the summer and very slow in the fall and winter. That has all changed, and summer is steady and the North Pole’s busy time is October through December. “More people are coming than they used to

HAGGARD/from page 4 during that time and continuing family traditions or what have you,” Haggard mentioned. “It used to not be like that.” Santa’s Workshop continues to deal with a ton of mail during the holidays, having its own U.S. Post Office onsite. Christmas cards and packages arrive daily, all to have the signature North Pole, Colorado stamp put on everything. “Santa used to get tons of letters from children. That has slowed down,” Haggard said. “People just don’t write letters like they used to.” One of the things Haggard loves most about operating his business is the opportunity to offer come charity. The park hosts hundreds of less fortunate and foster children each year, inviting them to enjoy the park at no cost. “Going to an amusement park is expensive. It reminds you when the needy kids are here that don’t have lots of the things that most of us take for granted,” he said. “They come and stay the entire day, because they don’t get that experience often. That’s enjoyable, owning a business and providing that enjoyment to certain people that otherwise couldn’t have it.” The park offers a special perk to seniors ages 60-plus - free admission. The intent was to entice older folks who were making the drive up Pikes Peak. “We started it several years ago. There’s lots of people going up Pikes Peak that don’t have children with them that are just out and about. There’s really nothing here they’d come here and pay to do,” Haggard said. “We wanted to entice those people to come here and maybe shop and get something to eat. It just grew from there.” Seniors are a big portion of the people that visit the amusement park, according to Haggard. During tougher economic times, he said it’s the seniors who have the money to come and visit the park. “They come and bring their grandkids or family. And unfortunately, you have a lot of grandparents raising their grandkids. They enjoy it. It’s safe here. They like the environment and they appreciate the fact that they don’t have to pay to come in,” he said. “I always tease them that they might come in free but they’re not going to leave for free.”

Until he retires, Haggard will gladly continue with his daily duties that include walking the park every morning, putting out flags and the overall preparation before the park opens. “I’m just there to solve problems or whatever comes up,” he said. “My job, the way I look at it, is to see that anybody that comes to the park enjoys their time here and feels like they got

Former Bronco recognized for work at Mt. Carmel By Anthony Welch Former Denver Broncos linebacker Randy Gradishar’s father served in World War II, as did his uncles. Growing up, he always had an appreciation for those who served in the military. That’s why in college he enlisted in the Army ROTC during the Vietnam War era. He was never drafted, however Gradishar has always made a point to work with veterans throughout his career. Recently, the Denver Broncos selected the Ring of Fame linebacker as the team’s 2018 Salute to Service nominee for his work at Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center here in Colorado Springs. He was recognized at the Broncos Nov. 4 game against the Houston Texans. Gradishar serves as outreach coordinator at Mt. Carmel, commuting 70 miles from Denver to Colorado Springs several days a week to assist veterans in adjusting back to civilian life. The center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing resources and assistance to veterans, military members and their families. “I enjoy having the opportunity to pay it forward in someone’s life,” Gradishar said. “Sometimes that’s just

A Christmas Kitten By Carole Galloway Dear Ms. Kitty, My 10-year-old daughter wants a kitten for Christmas. I’m not sure this is a good idea. What is your opinion? Well, there are many things to consider before giving your daughter a kitten as a Christmas gift. You want to make sure she understands adopting a kitten is a big commitment and not just a gift that can be returned. Kittens are live beings with emotional and physical needs and your daughter needs to be at least partially responsible for the care so she values him/ her as a member of the family. We usually recommend you adopt two kittens together, if possible. They will have a lifelong buddy and provide many things to each other that we can’t provide.
Speaking of Commitment
If you plan to travel during Christmas you may need to wait before adopting. Kittens are pretty dependent on their caregivers for the
first year of life. You cannot leave them home alone even with a friend or pet sitter that comes by every day. Kittens are extremely curious and too many dangers lurk around the corner including toys that aren’t really toys, i.e. tree ornaments, ribbons, the Christmas tree itself! Kittens can become bored or very lonely. They do not have the emotional maturity or experience to understand that you are returning home. If you do have a kitten please be sure to have him/her stay with a responsible friend who watches out for the safety and well-being of your little one. Boarding at a reputable cat only facility is another good option. Check with your veterinarian for recommendations and tour the facility to make sure you are happy with where your kitten will be staying.

If not, plan for future action or get involved in something you can actually influence right now. 4. Watch something that makes you laugh before bedtime. “Frasier” is one of my favorites. If all else fails (and this I say often), author Anne Lamott suggests a sigh and an “Oh well….” for those things we can’t control. It’s not defeat. It’s just the way it is. Starting on Dec. 4, 1913, Colorado Springs experienced the worst blizzard on record, with 45.5 inches of snow over three days. One newspaper report states, “… automobiles were replaced by sleighs and pedestrians took to skis and snowshoes...”
and, of course, struggled to fall asleep. We usually joked around, one year had a Styrofoam fight in the dark, or just talked about what we had hoped to find under the tree, which for me was “Star Wars” toys galore. Dominic usually was the first to awaken Christmas morning … way to early every year around 5 a.m. Wanting to let my parents get some sleep, I always set a rule that we wouldn’t come out of the bedroom until after 6. Some years, we were awake before 5. We’d pass the time reading pro wrestling magazines I had in my room or just chatting. As I got older, I still made sure that my siblings put out cookies and milk for Santa. I’d tell my siblings that I was sure I heard footsteps on the roof or jingle bells ringing in the middle of the night (one time I swore I did hear jingle bells). I enjoyed presents like any other kid, but seeing them enjoy the holiday was what made it great to me. I hope all our readers enjoy a great Christmas with their families.

A very vain middle-aged lady decided to have a face lift and some plastic surgery. After the scars had healed, she hit the streets to show off her new good looks. She went to the beauty parlor and asked the operator, “How old do you think I am?” After a few moments of thought, she answered, “Oh gosh, I think maybe 28 or 29.” The lady said, “Nope! I’m actually 41.” “Wow,” the astonished operator said, “you look so much younger.” Not yet fully satisfied, the lady asked the same question to the young trainer at her gym. After a moment or two, the young man replied, “Golly, probably 29 or 30.” “Nope!” she said. “I’m actually 41.” She was elated, but still needed more reassurance, so she asked the grocery clerk, who replied, “Geez, maybe 30 or 31?” She giggled and said, “Nope. I’m 41.” She started to feel confident and young again when an old man approached her in the parking lot and asked if he could help her load her groceries into her car. She said, “Why yes, sir. Do I look too old to be hefting my own groceries?” He said, “No, ma’am. Actually, I can predict exactly how old you are.” “How can you possibly do that?” she asked. “I am very accurate at that ma’am, but first I must place my hand on your thigh.” She was taken aback, but she agreed. The older gentleman placed his hand upon her thigh and bowed his head in concentration. After about 10 minutes, the lady asked, “So how much longer do you

There was a man who worked all of his life, saved all of his money and was a real miser when it came to money. He told his wife, “When I die, I want you to take all my money and put it in the casket with me. I want to take it all with me into the afterlife.” And so he got his wife to promise him that she would put all of his money in the casket with him. The day finally came when the man died. Following his memorial, the wife said, “Wait just a minute!” She walked over and placed a box inside the casket. The undertakers locked the casket down and rolled it away. Her friend, who sat next to her, said, “I know you weren’t fool enough to put all that money in there with your husband.” The loyal wife replied, “Listen, I’m an honest and loyal wife. I can’t go back on my word. I promised him that I was going to put that money in that casket with him.”
As Joe walked to his car after leaving a restaurant, he saw two women fighting. He knew both of them—one was good looking and the other one wasn’t. He asked what they were fighting about, and in unison, they said, “We’re fighting over you,” then they resumed fighting. Another guy walked over and asked what was going on. Joe said, “Call the cops. They’re fighting.” The guy asked, “What are they fighting about?” “They’re fighting over me,” Joe said, “and the ugly one is winning.”

However, I’ve noticed that after I’ve seen a show a few times, I see things that I overlooked before. Recently, I watched an episode of the original “Star Trek.” In the background of one scene, I noticed a sign posted on the door of the women’s restroom of the Starship Enterprise. Hi, I’m Bentley. I’m 9 years old. I lived in Texas for the first seven years of my life, but then I was in a shelter and condemned to death. Best Fur Friends Rescue saved my life on the day I was due to be killed, and then they put me on a van to Colorado Springs to meet my new family. I was so happy to leap out of the van and go home, and get used to my new life. I now have two new dog friends to play with, a big old house to live in, people walking by to woof at, and a big sectional couch to sit in. Life is good - and yeah, I’m a lucky dog!

Let’s celebrate the holiday season with a fun performance by “The Song Spinners.” The Song Spinners are a group that performs a lively variety show all around Colorado Springs. With their Theatrical Props and costumes, their performance is a crowd pleaser! Dinner is included with your ticket. Senior Choral-Holiday Concert. Dec. 11, 1:30-2:30 p.m. & Dec. 12, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Free. Be filled with the Christmas spirit while listening to the classics of the holiday! Refreshments will be served. Holiday Krafts, Kookies and Kiddos. Dec. 12, 1-3. Bring the grandkids or a special child in your life for an afternoon of fun! We will decorate cookies, make a craft, take a photo at our booth and watch a Christmas movie! What a fun way to make a memory. Gift Wrapping. Dec. 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donate. Need help wrapping your Christmas gifts or can’t find the time to get it all done? Let us wrap your gifts! We will set up shop in the lobby and all donations will benefit the Senior Center. Tunes on Tuesday - Pikes Peak Flute Choir. Dec. 18, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Free. Established in 1984, the Pikes Peak flute Choir is now more of a flute orchestra! From tiny piccolo to the very large subcontrabass flute, our musicians create a rich depth of sound. The 35-plus members range from 16-80!

We are proud to offer SilverSneaker Boom Muscle which is a higher intensity strength focused class. This class incorporates athletic exercises that boost overall fitness.
