Day 1 - Depart Colorado Springs for Lincoln, Nebraska. We’ll stop in Ogallala, Nebraska for lunch and visit Front Street, a beautiful replicated block of the old west. Ogallala was the end of the cattle trail, where Texas cowboys drove their herds to meet the Union Pacific Railroad. Overnight in Lincoln.

Day 2 - Our destination for today is Moline, Illinois. Along the way, we’ll stop in Leighton, Iowa, for lunch and a guided tour of the Tassel Ridge Winery and vineyards. After our studio tour, we move on to a tour of the John Deere Pavilion and learn about John Deere, the man, who used his skills and knowledge as a blacksmith to change the course of farming. We’ll experience the machines up close along with the history and innovation of this remarkable company. We continue on to the Amana Colonies, a National Historic Landmark which was formed in 1856 when German Pietists came to the United States to escape religious persecution in their homeland. Their 26,000 acre colony still stands to this day. Day 4 - This morning we make our way to Pella, Iowa, for their annual Tulip Festival! Day 5 - This morning is free time on your own at the Tulip Festival. After lunch, we say goodbye to Pella and head towards Kansas City, where we’ll overnight.

be proud of all vets, no matter if they were in wars or not.

The choice to sacrifice for your country can’t be an easy one. The mental and physical rigors I can’t fathom going through myself. I’m grateful for the vets who serve, so people like me don’t have to.

I’m very proud of the veterans in my family, including my father Harry Welch, grandfather Charles Cornett, uncle Richard Welch and uncle Jerry Welch. I also salute all of the band mates and friends I know that have served. Thank you all for your service.

Do me a favor and while you’re making plans for Thanksgiving or even Christmas, put that all aside and thank a veteran. Whether you know them personally or not, thank them for their service and shake their hand.

More to a mouth than a smile

The violent splash of color in the trees during the fall turns the heads of even the busiest person. The dramatic changing colors of fall are one way nature grabs our attention and reminds us of the passing of time.

It’s beautiful, but sobering as we watch days slip through our hands like the leaves silently floating off the trees. Fall always makes us grateful for the life and vibrance we have enjoyed through the spring and summer.

Gratitude is a natural posture of November. We gather around tables filled with food and surrounded by people we love and cherish, brought close to us again. In warm houses filled with love and abundant food, it’s nearly impossible not to reflect on our blessings.

When we count our blessings at Briargate Advanced Family Dental, there are so many things on our list! At the very top is our amazing patient community.

Over the 34 years of our practice, we have slowly moved north from down-

town Colorado Springs. Through several locations, the growth of our staff over time, and incorporation of new dental technologies, our patients have stayed with us. We love that our patients let us share in their lives beyond their dental needs; showing off pictures and accomplishments, sharing their sorrows and disappointments. Also, we are always blown away by the generous and helpful things they share on reviews and with their friends and families. We’ve been so amazed and grateful for the way our patients refer their loved ones to us that we have a program called Care and Share.

When patients refer someone, both the original patient and new patient receive a $50 credit on their account as our way of saying,

“Thanks!” And of course, we love that our patients have an excellent sense of humor! If you’ve met Dr. McIntyre you know he loves to have a good time and joke around. Our patients are so great at being lighthearted and having fun.

Next on our list would definitely be our staff. We have so many awesome team players that help our office run efficiently, but with a giant heart. While we have tried to create a generous and helpful work environment, our team never ceases to impress us with their eagerness to help out, even if it’s outside their responsibility.

We love getting to watch the relationships blossom between staff and patients as they responsively care for our patients, putting them at ease and

showing interest in them personally.

This year, we are so grateful to be in our newly renovated office! We have so much more space to work and serve our patients better. Our new conference room is big enough to host educational seminars. With this space, we can share the latest research with local professionals from continuing education conferences. Additionally, we are able to use this space to host monthly study clubs where local dental and oral professionals are able to consult one another on difficult or challenging cases. It’s been revolutionary for our practice to have access to this diverse and deep well of knowledge.

We are so grateful for the people who make our office great, both patients and staff. As you gather with your loved ones to celebrate gratitude, we wish you and your family health and abundance!

Salute to Veterans Robert “Bob” Frick

obert “Bob” Frick is quick to note that he’s no hero, although he served among many.

Yet, when considering the impact his years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves had on his subsequent career as a teacher, it’s likely his former students and colleagues would disagree.

Originally from Silver Spring, Maryland, Frick enlisted in the Army in 1965 at a time when many young men hoped to avoid being drafted and sent to Vietnam.

“Prior to 1965,” he said, “I was an underachiever. I always tested high, but performed low in school. I felt like I needed to do something to succeed.”

His timing was fortuitous in that, even without a college degree, the Army then accepted applicants for Officer Candidate School. “When everybody was trying to stay out of the Army, here I go, typical, when everybody’s going to the right, I go left. I enlisted,” he said.

In spite of his poor performance in high school, Frick was near the top of his class in leadership in OCS. “The Army’s training model was all hands-on” he said. “You learn something in the Army then you apply it. It totally changed my life.”

Thus began a nine-year stint of active duty followed by 21 years in the reserves from which he retired as a colonel. Frick was initially stationed in Germany where he “commanded two companies while still a first lieutenant, l looked about 18.”

This was followed by a one-year tour in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. Among other things, he was responsible for setting up communications so the commander on the ground at LZ (Landing Zone) could talk to the people back at Camp Eagle.

After Vietnam, Frick spent three years in Hawaii, where he met his wife, Jeannie, of 46 years.

Frick transferred to Fort Carson in 1973 and left the Army soon thereafter, later joining the Reserves.

He studied construction management at El Paso Community College (now Pikes Peak Community College) before transferring to Southern Colorado State College in Pueblo (now Colorado State University Pueblo) where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial arts and later a second master’s in computers in education.

“I decided I wanted to become a teacher,” Frick said. “When I went

into teaching one of the reasons was that I wanted to work with the kids who were like me, who didn’t fit the normal delivery model. When I was in the Army and commanding, I liked working with draftees. They were 17, 18 years old, and they were kids quite often who didn’t fit the system like me. I became a shop teacher largely because I knew that students I would have in shop classes would be ones that were hands-on learners and I loved it.”

With the exception of one year at a Missouri boys ranch, Frick’s teaching career was spent in Colorado Springs School District 11: Holmes Junior High (before it became a middle school), Palmer High School and the district’s Educational Opportunity School. Frick taught shop and computers. He also served as the coach for multiple sports at Holmes and Palmer.

“When I was first hired what they were looking for was someone who knew how to discipline youngsters and because I was a veteran from the 101st Airborne and a former captain I was offered the job,” he said. “I liked the kids with the little rough edges.

Those are the kids largely I continue to hear from.”

Serving in Vietnam has taken its toll on Frick’s health, but it hasn’t diminished his love of life. Frick enjoys wood working, metal working, but most of all spending time with his family, particularly his four grandchildren. He doesn’t consider himself a hero but based on what he’s heard from former students that’s debatable.

“I come from a military family,” he said. “My great-grandfather, grandfather, my father, all my uncles, my cousins — they’ve all been in the military.”

Hall served 23 years in the Army and was enlisted from 1979 to 2001.

“I did it all,” he said. “I was a drill sergeant a few times. I jumped out of airplanes like an idiot, and I was a tank commander.”

Hall served in the Gulf War, as well as the invasion of Grenada.

“I had never even heard of the country until I got there,” he said.

“They gave us maps from the gas station. We didn’t have any maps.

We’re looking at these tourist maps.

That was different.”

It’s been nearly 20 years since Hall retired from the Army while stationed at Fort Carson. He doesn’t miss it much these days, however things were different when he first got out.

“When I first got out, first four or five years, I did miss it,” he said. “I was like, ‘What am I going to do now?’”

The original plan was for Hall and his brother Steve to retire from the military at the same time here in Colorado Springs, so they could put together a band. That plan changed when Steve experienced an early exit from the Air Force and moved back home.

Nevertheless, Hall went on to form the VooDoo Hawks, a popular rock/Americana band here in Colorado Springs. Ironically, the founding members were all former military. Whenever there have been lineup changes in the past few decades the band has been around, Hall tries to recruit former or retired military whenever possible.

“I run my band like a military operation. We have certain ways of doing things, like SOPs (standard operating procedures). Everybody has a duty, something they’re responsible for,” he said. “We make a lot of lists,

like they do in the military. We have a laminated piece of paper of what’s needed for a gig and what needs to be in the trailer.”

Hall even wrote the VooDoo Hawks song “Quicksand” while serving in the Gulf War. He sat out with a guitar and a cassette recorder as bombs dropped in Baghdad.

What Hall enjoyed about being in the military was the structure and people pulling together as a team, he said.

“Like every job, there was always a weak link — someone who doesn’t want to be there,” Hall mentioned.

“For the most part, everybody in the Army pulled their weight. It’s far different from civilian life.”

There were many takeaways from Hall’s time in the military. Things he still lives by today.

“Always expect the unexpected.

All great plans will go to s--t somehow,” he said. “Adapt and overcome. Always try to stay positive.

By Anthony Welch Marilynn Doenges, Lloyd Wooldridge and Charles Woudenberg have a lot in common.

Not only does the trio live at the Summit Glen retirement community, each is in their 90s and, most importantly, they’re all World War II veterans.

“It was about loyalty to the country … a dedication to it,” Lloyd said.

He spent 32 years in the Army Corps of Engineers as a lieutenant, serving in WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the occupation of Japan. He retired as a lieutenant general.

Initially, Lloyd had an appointment to the Naval Academy, but that didn’t work out and he enlisted in the Army instead.

“I went (to the Naval Academy), took a color blind test and they said, ‘Go home.’ I was color blind,” he said.

Following his time in the military, Lloyd worked different careers overseas and spent 55 years of his life in Japan.

He was involved in international trade, international banking and fire and safety engineer design.

Lloyd also became quite the businessman with dealings in Spain, China, Venezuela, England, the Philippines and Australia.

“I’ve had many careers,” he added.

Marilynn was enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a second lieutenant. She was stationed at Ashford General Hospital in White Sulfur Springs, W.Va. There she treated soldiers from the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during WWII. Then she got orders to go to Europe.

“We spent eight days traveling across the ocean, zig-zagging to avoid submarines,” Marilynn said. “When we

landed, they said, ‘The war is over.’”

Marilynn was one of 500 nurses that were sent to provide relief to nurses serving in Europe. They were then directed to Northern France, where they waited for a ship to transport them to the Philippines.

“Then we found out the war in the South Pacific was over,” she said. “We set up in an old school in Marseille and took care of the wounded.”

Marilynn left the military a first lieutenant. However, she continued to work as a nurse for the remainder of her career.

“Nursing is a really wonderful profession, always taking care of people in dire circumstances. Taking care of those young men, who were the same age I was, was really a wonderful thing.

I liked being able to help them, take care of them and listen to them,” she said. “I had a ward of 100 men in Marseille in a psych ward. I treated soldiers suffering from shell shock or what we know now as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I wound up working as a psychiatric nurse.”

Before that, she attended the University of Colorado in Boulder to get her bachelor’s degree. However, she met her husband and left school.

“It took me 20 years to get my bachelor’s degree,” Marilynn laughed.

Later, she would teach at the Beth-El College of Nursing. She also got into publishing and, along with her friends Mary Frances Moorhouse and Alice Geissler-Murr, publishes the Nurse’s Pocket Guide, which can be found for sale online and in stores.

Marilynn, who participated in the Nov. 2 Veterans Day Parade in Colorado Springs, said she didn’t think twice about enlisting back then.

“It was something you did because you had to,” she said.

during WWII with the Tenth Mountain Division out of Colorado. He was enlisted from 1943-1946.

“We had a lot of casualties. There were 1,000 killed in action in our division,” he said. “When we were in combat, we were among friends we knew. It was very hard to see people hurt or killed that had trained with us.”

Charles enlisted at age 18, after watching a PR film about ski troops. He was stationed at Camp Hale just outside of Leadville.

“After seeing all the war pictures, I thought, ‘Boy, if I get in there, I won’t be going out to the pacific,’” he said. “I came out here all by myself. I had never been west of the Delaware River. I did it because we were at war, and it was my turn to go. I didn’t wait to be drafted.”

Charles served as a platoon sergeant in a weapons platoon. He was on the front lines, and that was tough to contend with at times.

“Just before we went overseas, I went to my best friend’s wedding,” he said. “The first day of combat, he was killed. That was a shock.”

When the war was over, Charles was encouraged to re-enlist, but he decided the Army was no longer for him.

“After being in ground combat and the infantry, it didn’t look like a good career for me,” he said.

Charles attended Rutgers University and earned a bachelor’s in business. He went on to work for the Prudential insurance company. Later, after he was married with kids, Charles went on to open a print shop with his sons and operated in Colorado Springs for many years before deciding to sell.

“As far as my memories are concerned, I think there’s something that no one understands unless they’ve been in it – and that’s facing an enemy in combat,” Charles added.

To the delight of lovers of the arts, the North Fork Valley Creative Coalition — which manages the Paonia Creative District — has welcomed artists of all mediums to the area. And the valley’s charming small towns have so much to offer — it’s hard to know where to start. Read on for ideas on things to do and where to eat and stay.

Must-Have Experiences

Paonia’s Creative District could be from a Norman Rockwell painting, with turn-of-the-century buildings housing galleries and artist studios. Blue Sage Center for the Arts is a highlight — see the latest gallery show and find out what events are happening. Across the street, outlined in dark orange, is the historic Paradise Theatre, where you can catch a movie or live musical performance. The West Elks American Viticultural Area (AVA) boasts some of the highest vineyards in North America and some of Colorado’s best wine. Have the Yacht Club Red, aged in French oak at Azura Cellars, an idyllic winery and art gallery with lovely views. Or Stone Cottage Cellars makes an exquisite Rose of Pinot Noir and has a cottage for those interested in extending their trip.

Rent an e-bike or cruiser from Cirque Cyclery, a must-visit boutique with a variety of bikes and gifts.

Purchase a colorful purse or plaid shirt at Refinery, where everything is made entirely from reclaimed fabrics in Paonia. Trader Mag’s is a vintage store with a beauty counter that sells products you can only get on the Western Slope. Be sure to pop into Root & Vine Market for a glass of wine or a cup of locally roasted coffee.

Take part in Final Friday Frolics year-round, an art walk through the North Fork Valley Creative Coalition. If you like your art with a side of pastoral splendor, go on the North Fork Valley Art and Ag Tour — a showing of organic orchards, wineries and artists’ studios in late August/early September. Late November brings the Holiday Art Fair, which is the best place to pick up one-of-a-kind presents.

he Colorado Institute for Conflict Resolution & Creative Leadership (CICRCL) will host the Wise Elder Forum: Learning to Live an Authentic Life as a Wise Elder 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Nov. 15 and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 16.

The CICRCL is located at 4820 Topaz Dr. in Colorado Springs.

A Wise Elder is someone who lives an authentic life, shows up and knows what he or she wants and how to get it. These elders are considered wise because they have been able to connect the dots in their life and learn from all their life experiences. They are self-aware and able to self-correct, when necessary.

By contrast, an old man or an old woman is someone just waiting to die.

They are not very self-aware and most of what they do is to try to stay in their comfort zone. They do not like change or uncertainty. They silently worry about their future and often worry about their children and other loved ones. To paraphrase Henry David Thoreau, “The mass of men and women lead lives of quiet desperation.”

“Double” Taxation on Social Security Benefits Some taxpayers pay federal income taxes on their Social Security benefits, even though when Social Security was established back in 1935 it was ALWAYS supposed to be TAX FREE. For some it still is tax free, and for others it is not! This usually happens when you have other income (such as wages, self-employment, interest, dividends, capital gains, and other taxable income reported on your tax return) in addition to Social Security benefits.

To determine the amount of Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits that may be taxable, taxpayers must ADD TOGETHER all other income sources mentioned above, including tax-exempt interest, PLUS half of the Social Security benefits received. If that TOTAL is $25,000 or more ($32,000 for Married Filing Jointly) then 50% to 85% of benefits will be TAXABLE AGAIN at ordinary tax rates. So here is an IMPORTANT QUESTION:

I was thumbing through the paper when I saw your picture in a column called “Ask the Old Bag.” I told her our paper in Phoenix has the same column but it is called “Ask Gabby Gayle.” My question to you is are you the same person? And if so, why the different name? Or are you sisters? Like Ann Landers and Abigail Van Buren!

No matter what your name is I enjoy your column. So does my friend in GJ. Signed, Traveler Dear Traveler: I thought this would happen one day. When my column began years and years ago, it was called “Ask the Old Bag.” A few years ago, I began getting letters from Arizona readers that disliked the name of my column. Some felt I was setting women back 20 years with that title.

We took a readers poll, and the ones who wanted it changed won by two votes. They suggested new names and I chose “Ask Gabby Gayle.”

However, my Beacon, Colorado readers liked the “Old Bag” and chose to keep it. New newspapers are given a choice. This is how the Old Bag column was born: When I began the column I was still working and had an office in a retirement community.

One day, while waiting for the elevator, several women were sitting together visiting. I heard one of them ask, “Who is that woman?” “I don’t know,” the other answered, “but she sure looks like an old bag.” I looked around and I was the only one around.

I entered the elevator a bit ruffled.

“They think I look like an old bag!” I went to ground floor, went in the restroom and looked in the mirror. I kind of did look like an old bag.

Then I smiled and did not look like an old bag. I said to myself: “Old girl, you are going to have to smile more!” So, that is how I came to name

My dilemma is that one close friend tells me that I have too many friends, and that I should spend more time with the ones that are closest (I think she means her).

I just love people and have been this way all my life. I tell her that she should make more friends so she doesn’t feel that way. She did not take that comment well and barely speaks to me now. Demonstrating sincere gratitude takes energy, thought and intentional decisions on our part, whether it’s toward God or others. So how can having a grateful heart have a permanent affect on you and those around you? When you express thankfulness, it not only impacts the receiver—God or others—but it also has benefits for you, the one giving thanks. Recognizing the blessings we

Sharing your gratitude improves your quality of life which can only result in positive emotions for you and others.

Medicare launches Red Hand Symbol citing nursing home abuse For Life After 50

P

lacing a family member in a nursing home is often fraught with fear, concern over care that will be provided and safety.

Family members who are placed in a nursing home are vulnerable, sick, and often unable to advocate for themselves. Making decisions and finding the nursing home that meets a loved one’s unique needs is complex.

In addition to visiting and interviewing the staff, families can use Nursing Home Compare, a tool with information about quality of care, staffing patterns, and health inspections resulting in an overall star rating.

Five stars is the highest rating that a nursing home can achieve.

In Spring, 2019, Medicare announced a five pillar plan to improve nursing home care. The approach includes strengthening oversight, enhancing enforcement,

increasing transparency, improving quality, and putting patients over paperwork.

The first pillar started Oct. 23 when Medicare will begin labeling nursing homes with a bright Red Hand in a circle, known as a “Do Not Proceed” symbol.

The Red Hand is an alert to consumers that the nursing home has been cited for abuse, neglect or exploitation in the past year that led to harm of a resident in the past year. The nursing home can also be labeled with a Red Hand if a citation was written for abuse that could have potentially led to resident harm in the past two years.

The Nursing Home Compare Red Hand will be updated monthly to provide more timely information to consumers. The Red Hand will be removed when the nursing home corrects the issues of abuse or

potential for abuse.

It is expected that many nursing homes will be flagged with a Red Hand, especially in light of the recent mandatory reporting requirements.

Several of the nursing home trade associations suggest that the Red Hand will be applied based on reporting requirements, regardless of

who initiated the abuse and the source of the abuse.

The Red Hand is another tool to help families do comparison shopping when placing a loved one in a nursing home. Consumers can view Nursing Home Compare at www.medicare.gov.

For Life After 50 n recent years, numerous studies have shown that people who don’t get enough sleep are at greater risk for strokes and heart attacks.

A new University of Colorado Boulder study helps explain why.

It found that people who sleep fewer than seven hours per night have lower blood levels of three physiological regulators, or microRNAs, which influence gene expression and play a key role in maintaining vascular health.

The findings could potentially lead to new, non-invasive tests for sleep-deprived patients concerned about their health, the authors said.

“This study proposes a new potential mechanism through which sleep influences heart health and overall physiology,” said senior author Christopher DeSouza, a professor of Integrative Physiology at University of Colorado at Boulder.

Despite recommendations by the American Heart Association that people get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, about 40 percent of adults in the U.S. fall short. Overall, the average American’s sleep duration has plummeted from 9 hours to 6.8 hours nightly over the past century.

blood vessels—and their arteries don’t dilate and constrict as well as those who get sufficient sleep. But the underlying factors leading to this dysfunction aren’t well known.

MicroRNAs are small molecules that suppress gene expression of certain proteins in cells. The exact function of circulating microRNAs in the cardiovascular system, and their impact on cardiovascular health, is receiving a lot of scientific attention.

Drugs are currently in development for a variety of diseases, including cancer, to correct impaired microRNA signatures.

For the new study, which is the first to explore the impact of insufficient sleep on circulating microRNA signatures, DeSouza and his team took blood samples from 24 healthy men and women, age 44 to 62, who had filled out questionnaires about their sleep habits. Half slept 7 to 8.5 hours nightly; half slept 5 to 6.8 hours nightly.

They measured the expression of nine microRNAs previously associated with inflammation, immune function or vascular health.

The study found that people with insufficient sleep had 40 to 60 percent lower circulating levels of miR-125A, miR-126, and miR-146a, than those who slept enough.

“Why seven or eight hours seems to be the magic number is unclear,” said DeSouza. “However, it is plausible that people need at least seven hours of sleep per night to maintain levels of important physiological regulators.”

Research is now underway in DeSouza’s lab to determine whether restoring healthy sleep habits can restore healthy levels of microRNAs. Ultimately, he said, it’s possible that microRNAs in blood could be used as a marker of cardiovascular disease in people with insufficient sleep, enabling doctors to glean important information via a blood test rather than current, more invasive tests.

For now, DeSouza’s message for those burning the midnight oil is this: “Don’t underestimate the importance of a good night’s sleep.”

Seven tips to help choose your health plan during open enrollment

Open enrollment season is here, a time when Coloradans and millions of Americans across the country will have the opportunity to select or switch their health insurance plan for 2020.

To help guide you during this important time, here are some tips that may help lead you to better health and cost savings.

Tip 1: Know your open enrollment dates. For the more than 178 million Americans with employer-provided coverage, many employers set aside a two-week period between September and December when employees can select health benefits for the following year.

For the more than 64 million people enrolled in Medicare, Medicare Annual Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 each year. For most people, changes made during this time will take effect Jan. 1, 2020.

Tip 2: Understand your options.

When it comes to selecting a plan, one size does not fit all. Take the time to understand your options so you can find what will work best for you. A good first step is to make sure you understand health insurance lingo, such as premium, deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum. If you need a refresher, check out UnitedHealth Group’s Just Plain Clear Glossary (in English, Spanish and Portuguese) to learn and understand health care terms. And if you’re eligible for Medicare, make sure you’re familiar with the difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage as you weigh your options.

Tip 3: Anticipate next year’s health expenses. When reviewing your options, plan ahead. Maybe you are expecting a significant health event next year, such as a surgery or having a baby. If so, then it’s even more important to compare the “total cost” of your plan, not just your

monthly premium. Plan designs vary, so also compare deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums.

Tip 4: Check to make sure your medications are covered. Even if you don’t expect to change plans, it’s important to make sure your prescription drugs will still be covered next year. Costs can change from year to year, and how much you pay for generics vs. brands may differ among health plans.

Tip 5: Ask about well-being programs. Many health plans now offer financial incentives that reward you for taking healthier actions, such as completing a health survey, walking, going to the gym or not using nicotine. Also, many Medicare Advantage plans offer gym memberships and wellness programs for members at no additional costs.

Tip 6: Don’t forget about specialty benefits. Additional benefits, such as dental, vision, hearing, disability or critical illness insurance, are often cost-effective coverage options that can help protect you and your family from head to toe.

For Medicare beneficiaries, some may be surprised that Original Medicare doesn’t cover prescription drugs and most dental, vision and hearing services, but many Medicare Advantage plans do.

Tip 7: Try the convenience of virtual visits. If you are busy juggling kids’ schedules or work travel, or simply prefer to connect with a doctor from the comfort of your own home, consider choosing a plan that includes 24/7 virtual visits. It may be a convenient, lower-cost way to talk to a doctor about minor health issues, and all you need is a smartphone, tablet or computer. Often, telehealth is available to members of employersponsored, individual and Medicare Advantage plans.

Recipes: Sides for holiday entertaining Family Features

T

he holiday season means it’s time for gathering family and friends for food and celebration. To make the process easier, incorporate recipes that can feed a crowd without lots of exotic, hard-to-find ingredients or long, laborious prep and cook times.

These recipes for Hearty Roasted Winter Vegetables featuring Aunt Nellie’s Whole Pickled Beets and Caprese Bean and Salami Salad with READ 3 Bean Salad, for example, are ideal side dishes for holiday gatherings with enough to go ’round for everyone at the table.

Plus, if you’re heading to a holiday potluck, they’re perfect for bringing along to share with the whole crew and versatile enough to be paired with a variety of main courses.

Plus, the Caprese Bean and Salami Salad can also stand in as an appetizer.

Hearty Roasted Winter Vegetables Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 45-55 minutes Servings: 6

1 jar (16 oz.) Aunt Nellie’s Whole Pickled Beets, drained 1 small red onion, cut into 12 wedges 2 c baby portobello mushrooms, cleaned and stems trimmed 2 c butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 3/4-inch chunks 3 T olive oil 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 2 t chopped fresh rosemary 2 t chopped fresh thyme 1/4 t salt, plus additional, to taste (optional) 1/8 t pepper, plus additional, to taste (optional) 2 c Brussels sprouts, ends trimmed and scored with cross-cut Heat oven to 400 F. Place beets, onion, mushrooms and squash on rimmed 15 1/2-by-10 1/2-by-1-inch baking sheet; drizzle with olive oil.

Add garlic, rosemary, thyme, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper; toss to coat. Roast 15 minutes.

Add Brussels sprouts, stir and continue to roast until vegetables are tender and browned, about 30-35 minutes, stirring once. Adjust salt and pepper, to taste, if desired.

Caprese Bean and Salami Salad

5 cans (15 ounces each) READ 3 Bean Salad (3 cans drained, 2 cans undrained) 1 pint grape tomatoes, halved 1 pound small marinated mozzarella balls, drained 3/4 c (1 oz.) fresh basil, chopped 8 oz. dried salami, sliced salt, to taste pepper, to taste 2 whole-wheat baguettes (13 ounces each), sliced In large bowl, stir together bean salad, tomatoes and mozzarella balls.

Before serving, add basil and salami. Add salt and pepper, to taste. Stir to combine.

Serve on large platter surrounded by baguette slices.

Mission of Spanish Peaks to give back, care for veterans

he Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center’s mission is simple: To improve the lives of people we touch, according to Marketing Director Deb Channel.

“They sacrificed for us. We owe it to them,” she said. “This is their home and their final stop.”

The center is a CMS 5 Star-Rated veterans nursing home, that includes 120 long-term care beds, is just outside of Walsenburg, located in Huerfano County. Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center serves veterans, spouses, widows and Gold-Star parents of veterans.

Colorado residency is not a requirement for residency. The center strives daily to provide exceptional quality of care and quality of life is the goal.

“It is our honor and privilege to care for our residents and their families,” Channel added.

The Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center has an all-inclusive pricing policy that includes the following: • Private and semi-private rooms • 24-hour nursing care: licensed nurses available to monitor and assess ongoing medical condition, administer and manage medications, wound care, and coordination of care • Certified nurse aides to assist with activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, grooming, and using the restroom • Secure Memory Care Unit available • Prescriptions and medications • Ambulation aids (walkers, wheelchairs, etc.)

• Transportation to and from medical appointments

• Oxygen (portable, CPAP, BiPAP, etc.)

• Physician services by on-site primary care physician • Meals, special diets, and rehabilitative silverware (with extended dining hours to suit resident schedules) • Initial dental exam • Diversified activity program (sports outings, fishing, museums, shopping trips, games, and so much more) • Religious services • Library Service • Resident Social Services: Social Services provides assessment of resident cognition and mood status.

Those results are used to design care plans to manage the disease process.

Social Services also works closely with the family to support them as they cope with the decline of their loved ones • Veterans Service Officer on-site: develops and submits claims for V.A. Pensions and Compensation applications as needed and provides liaison between the V.A. and the Veterans of SPVCLC • Enhanced spa bathing with whirlpool bath tubs • Phone, satellite TV, and Wi-Fi services in-room • Family support groups • Housekeeping services • Laundry services • Hospice services • Personal Funds Assistance for residents - personal need account available through our business office so residents have quick, easy access to funds for clothing and other personal items • Specialty equipment (bariatric wheelchairs, transfer bars, etc.)

She added that the center strives to keep veterans busy with a variety of activities as well. That includes trips to music festivals, zoos and entertainment is brought to the center on a regular basis.

“We do as much as we can,” Channel mentioned.

The center is experiencing a transition where there are fewer World War II veterans and more from the Vietnam and even Afghanistan eras.

“We’re adjusting to meet the needs of those veterans,” Channel said.

I Love My Pet

S

tella is my best dog friend! We got Stella April 20, 2017 from a couple my husband works with. She is a giggle! Stella is so smart! She plays fetch with her favorite squeak, she gives kisses for sweet tea, she literally points to what she wants, she lets me put the funniest of clothes on her, she has the biggest smile, the cutest pant and the best smile!

I love her and have no clue how we lived without her! We are a family of seven, and she takes turns sleeping with each of us during the week. She loves the cuddles and, in the winter, her favorite place is in front of the fireplace. She has taught me how to love without speaking, how to hear without words and how to spot a great fire hydrant by smell!

Stella just lost her best buddy, Paris (Shih Tzu), a month ago. My husband lost both his parents this past year, and they have bonded over grief in the most heart-melting way. We’re blessed to have her in every way possible. She has seen me though the darkest of days and I hope she knows how very loved she is.

Tom is a young man who is fascinated with the rodeo, especially bull riding. He knows that there is an old man in town that used to ride bulls. That’s how he became crippled.

Tom goes into town and sees the old man sitting in a rocking chair with a cane across his lap in front of the general store. Tom asks the man, “Are you the guy who used to ride bulls?”

The old man replies, “Yup.” Tom asks, “Would you teach me how to ride bulls?”

The old man tips his hat back and looks Tom up and down and then says, “I guess so.”

Tom asks, “What do I have to do?”

The old man says, “First you need to go into the general store and buy a bag of marbles.”

After Tom comes back with the marbles, the old man says, “Now slip one up under your hatband. Every time you get on a bull, you put your marble under your hatband. When that bull throws you, and you go flying one way and your hat goes another way, you get up, put your hat back on and slip another marble under your

Should I get my senior cat a kitten

Dear Ms. Kitty, I have a 10 ½ year old cat who just sleeps most of the day. I think Lucy is bored and lonely. Should I get a kitten to keep her active?

Dear Sleepy, This question demonstrates your desire to help Lucy to enjoy her senior years. However, adding a kitten may not be the best direction to go for her health and wellbeing. Many senior cats are challenged by the activities of daily living. If you add a single hyper kitten to your home, you could overwhelm Lucy.

Make sure she has been evaluated by her vet and that her health is not an issue. Lots of older cats suffer in silence with chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or cancer.

I recommend reviewing your home to make sure Lucy has an enriched environment that is adapted to her physical needs and encourages activity.

Make sure that she can get around the house, especially to favorite vertical spots. This may require adding steps, shelves or ramps along with non-skid mats. Many older cats lose some of their ability to jump and may need to have shorter distances and surfaces that allow them to safely navigate without slipping.

Older cats can lose their ability to regulate their body temperature. Offer a heated bed that is designed for cats to enjoy safely.

Keep life interesting with interactive play and puzzle feeders.

Older cats still have the desire to hunt.

Lucy many need more time to get engaged and her play may not be as physical as it once was, but chasing a toy is still important for a healthy mind and body. Offer short play sessions that are appropriate for her physical limitations.

You want to watch Lucy to see if her weight is increasing or decreasing.

Try to keep her meals nutritionally dense. Sometimes a nutritional supplement added to a food she already likes can enhance her nutrition.

You can also try adding some warm water or sprinkling some freeze-dried protein (like chicken or

fish) on top to keep her interested.

Make sure that she has a couple of sources of water and is staying hydrated.

Experiment with different dishes for food and water. She might find it easier to eat and drink from a raised dish and she might enjoy a water fountain if she doesn’t have one.

Help Lucy conserve her energy by keeping the litter boxes near her main living area. Make sure she can get in and out of the box easily. If she has arthritis, she may want a soft litter that is more comfortable on her paws. Try giving her an additional box with some new fine grained or soft textured litter and let her show you what she likes.

Cats can start to lose their eyesight with age so you may want to install nightlights in hallways, so she doesn’t get disoriented.

If you see that Lucy has areas of her fur that are not getting groomed, it may be that she is not as flexible and may need assistance with her grooming. This can help keep Lucy comfortable and avoid matted fur, but it is also a great way to spend quality time. Try some different grooming tools and see what Lucy enjoys.

At 10-1/2, Lucy would be about 60 in human years. If you feel that Lucy is still energetic and would benefit with the addition of another cat, I would recommend finding an older cat who will be a good match with Lucy’s age and personality. If you are set on bringing in a young cat, then I suggest getting a bonded pair so they can keep each other busy and not exhaust Lucy.

As the humans settle in for a post-turkey snooze or football game, the holiday mixer in your dog’s gut is just getting started. Vomiting and diarrhea become the lingering houseguests. Most dogs will recover rather quickly from the holiday trimmings.

However, owners need to be on the lookout for the more sinister side of overindulgence and dietary indiscretion. Lethargy, drooling, ongoing vomiting or diarrhea (especially with blood), loss of appetite, panting, pacing and restlessness can be signs of something seriously wrong. What could be the problem?

• Gastric torsion—or bloat—is when the stomach becomes stretched by food, liquid or gas; and the stomach twists. This is an emergency.

Torsion can happen for several reasons, including being pre-disposed to the condition. However, any dog can be susceptible especially if a dog eats or drinks too much, runs or plays a lot just before or after eating, or only eats one large meal a day. Know the symptoms—retching or unsuccessful vomiting; distended belly; panting and restlessness, and drooling. Get to a vet immediately. It can be a matter of life or death.

• Pancreatitis—inflammation of the pancreas—may begin like an

upset tummy. It can rapidly become life-threatening. Symptoms may include those mentioned above, and progress to a hunched back (signaling an uncomfortable or painful abdomen), weakness, fever and dehydration.

• Toxin ingestion—from a plant (poinsettia, mistletoe, holly berries), a medication (including cannabis), certain foods (raisins, grapes, currants, and the artificial sweetener Xylitol), and even the salt dough ornament little Jimmy made you as a gift--can cause everything from GI irritation to kidney failure. If you suspect your pet has eaten anything suspicious, call your vet or Poison Control immediately at 1-888-4264435. Heads up—they will connect you to a veterinarian for a fee.

• Foreign bodies are as plentiful as Elves on the Shelves this time of year. Ornaments and their hooks, tinsel, bows and ribbons, and tree lights are all fair game to inquisitive noses and mouths. Tasty turkey or ham bones from an unsecured trash can might lead to a trip to the emergency room for an obstruction.

• Knowing these things ahead of time and being vigilant are key to a safe and happy holiday. Don’t let the best ingredients of this season—food, family and friends, and fun—turn into a recipe for disaster for your dog.

And let’s give thanks for the veterinarians and their staff who help keep our four-legged friends happy and healthy. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Fountain Valley Senior Center 5745 Southmoor Drive - 520-6470 FVSC Demand Rides The Fountain Valley Senior Center would like to implement a demand ride (same day rides) program. We have several days where our drivers have idle time; usually mid-mornings. What we would like to start to do is use this idle time for on-demand rides. These rides could be for going shopping at Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Walgreens or even to the park. We would need to keep these rides in the Fountain Valley area. Our transportation history shows; our idle times to be 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. What you need to do: • You would need to sign up for these demand rides in the Transportation office, we do ask for your patience because even though we have some Idle time to fill, if a medical appointment is involved this would have to take priority, this would be rare.

• We would also ask that if you are shopping to keep the bags to what you can carry.

• The rides would need to depart and return to the Senior Center.

• When shopping be ready at the pick times the driver tells you, Very important.

Note: this service might not always be available daily, in lieu of driver call offs.
