Vietnam changed many of Davis’ views

So he joined up with the U.S. Navy’s Construction Battalion, better known as the Seabees. Davis’ specialty was welding and metal work. He aided in construction of buildings, bunkers and bridges while serving during his nine-month tour Alan Davis of Vietnam in 1967.

Seeing how children suffered from the war in Vietnam really got to Davis. It lead to him coming home with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

On the positive side, the experience may have influenced his career choices that followed.

After earning a bachelor’s degree from Keene State College, Davis earned a master’s degree in industrial education from the University of Southern Colorado (now Colorado State University-Pueblo), a master’s in counseling and human services from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) and a master’s in educational leadership from UCCS. Davis taught middle school math and science, eventually became a counselor and then worked as a licensed psychotherapist for 10 years before retiring.

He started out working with children but then switched gears to working with veterans, many who suffered from PTSD. There’s a few more important things that Davis gained from his military experience.

“Value for life and appreciation for what we have in this country,” he said. “There’s not a day in my life that I don’t go, ‘Goddamn I’m lucky to be alive!’”

We celebrate Veteran’s Day this month with our heartfelt thanks to all those men and women who have defended our country. We can only hope that senseless conflicts like North Korea can somehow be avoided.

executive jet for a year, transporting senior officials all around Vietnam. One of those flights entailed taking Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to different spots in Vietnam.

“I enjoyed my year in Vietnam,” Hanson said.

“It was a lot of great flying.”

But that year did impact Hanson’s health. He was hit with a dose of Agent Orange and later was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“I removed (the prostate) and have been in excellent health since,” Hanson added.

He finished the final eight years of his career working at North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) in the roles of public information officer, director of information and in community relations.

“I traveled around a lot doing radio and TV presentations for NORAD,” Hanson said.

Nowadays, Hanson is active with Disabled American Veterans, Masonic organizations and performs with the Shriner’s band and the New Horizons Band. He also volunteers weekly at the VA Clinic.

“I’m pretty busy being retired,” Hanson mentioned.

And he’s perfectly fine with that.

“In total, Jim’s service in the navy and career in the military spanned 24 years. However, his dedication did not cease after his career in the military.

Rather, the same honorable character he displayed during the events of Pearl Harbor is still evident today through his everyday actions now.”

Downing downplayed his heroics saying the bridge was taking his name largely “because I’m a veteran.”

“Everyone who has served is a hero in my opinion,” Downing said. “I accept this on their behalf.”

“Mr. Jim Downing we are honored to stand before you today and recognize your accomplishments and your service to the country. While we are honoring Mr. Downing today, we also honor every serviceman from every decade in our nation’s 241 years, whether they fought in a war or not, whether they served a full career or not,” Commissioner VanderWerf said. “Because they did their job with faith in our country and our values, we can stand here today in peace and enjoy our lives with our families. Mr. Downing, you’re an excellent

ambassador and representative of those who have served.”

Besides appearing for the sign dedication, Downing has also attended multiple high school and university Q&As, was the guest of honor at West Virginia University’s 150th anniversary celebration, threw out the first pitch at a Tampa Bay baseball game, made an appearance on Megyn Kelly Today, and even authored his own book, “The Other Side of Infamy: My Journey through Pearl Harbor and the World of War.”

Luigi’s serves up rich family tradition This is another in Life After 50’s Historic Restaurant series.

O

ne step into Luigi’s Restaurant in southwest Colorado Springs and customers know they’ve found “the real thing.” Savory smells of simmering marinara sauce, lasagna and oven-baked pizza along with customer-inscribed Chianti bottles and a sign announcing “Italians Always Welcome” convey a warm intimacy, tinged with nostalgia.

Luigi’s founders Leo and Anna Cervetti opened their first restaurant in 1958 at Mill Street and Nevada Avenue, adjacent to a gas station and garage says daughter Gina Costley. “It was very small – just a few tables and mostly takeout,” she says, adding that early clients were mostly working folks. Eight years later, Leo – a former brick layer and stone mason whose credits included work on the United States Air Force Academy Chapel – decided to build a new location just a block away. Her parents eventually sold the business to Les and Gina Costley and to Gina’s sister and brother-in-law in 1998. In 2006, Les and Gina assumed sole ownership.

Today the red brick building continues to draw Italian food lovers from around the city, state and country.

At entry, guests are greeted by bulletin boards full of historic, sometimes faded Polaroid shots – new babies, birthday celebrations and couples’ anniversaries. There are also vintage signs and wall board décor.

Seating moves quickly even though reservations are not accepted. Instead,

customers are invited to call ahead and get on the list.

Les handles daytime food prep and manages the kitchen while Gina and a team of 15 or so employees arrive by late afternoon to begin cooking and set-up. By 5pm each Tuesday through Saturday, customers are already lining up. Like Leo and Anna, today’s Luigi’s team prides itself in doughs, sauces, homemade

specialties, fillings and meatballs or sausages without artificial ingredients or additives. “We make everything but basic spaghetti in-house,” Gina says.

But there are occasional challenges. At one point, Luigi’s lost its longtime Italian bread supplier and looked for six months before deciding to bake their own. And when her father – who she calls a “connoisseur” of ricotta cheese – lost a favorite source, it took months to find a replacement he would accept.

She credits that attention to detail and quality – along with the intense loyalty of her customers -- for the restaurant’s success. “In 2008 when the Recession hit and restaurants were struggling, our customers saved us.

They recommended us to their friends or brought in groups of people for dinner. We were so busy!” she explains.

Clients like Colorado Springs residents Tom and Mary Ellen Saba moved to the city seven years ago, after retiring from professional careers in Chicago, Orlando and New York.

They’ve been “regulars” at Luigi’s ever since. “We usually call in half an hour before we’re coming in and ask

“We’ve eaten at wonderful places in New York, Chicago, Montreal. Luigi’s has the best food in town. In fact I’d say they’re the best Italian we’ve ever had,” he says, describing the hot Italian bread, fresh salad with “a unique vinaigrette dressing,” the not-watery pasta sauces and the “half a chicken” Cacciaotore or stuffed ravioli and cannolis. “There are so many choices – the menu’s as long as your arm.”

Gina acknowledges the Sabas enthusiasm and knows that people worry Luigi’s will change. One example: An Air Force Academy couple who returned to the restaurant after 40 years away was delighted to find nothing had really changed. “We did update our small bar area, but that’s about it,” she says.

As for the future, the Costleys are philosophical. New grandparents, they decided to close on Sundays and Mondays to have more time with family. And recently legislated increases in the minimum wage have hit hard. It has also become tougher to fill open line and wait staff positions with qualified workers.

“When I was younger and saw how hard my parents worked, I thought, ‘I’ll never do this,’” Gina says, “but I love our customers and hope to see our legacy continue.”

Helping caregivers ‘Move Through the Holidays’ For Life After 50“ Sweet” is the word that comes to mind when Ted thinks about the mother he knew before dementia stole her personality. “She was probably the most loving person, soft spoken and a delight,” he says. “All the sweetness she had makes this disease even more ravaging.”

Ted Manakas, 67, is one of many clients participating in the Aging Families and Caregiver Program at the UCCS Aging Center, a community mental health clinic focused on the needs of older adults and their families. Caregivers like Ted are the focus of a free caregiver workshop Wednesday, Nov. 29, from 1:30-5 p.m., at MacKenzie Place Senior Living, 1605 Elm Creek View (next to Nancy Lewis Park).

Titled “Moving Through the Holidays,” this workshop will focus on how caregivers can cope with the additional stress they face during the holiday season. A special feature will be a short experiential movement program for caregivers followed by a 25-minute performance of “Nutcracker Swing,” set to Tchaikovsky’s music adapted by Duke Ellington and presented by the Ormao

At 86, Ted’s mother had been diagnosed with dementia and was more than unhappy about her son’s decision to sell the family home in New Jersey and move her into a memory care facility in Colorado Springs. “It was the most difficult six weeks of my life,” Ted recalls. “She tried to throw herself out of the car and called me ‘the devil.’ People kept saying ‘it’s not who she is,’ but it was who she had become.”

Through individual and group caregiver therapy at the Aging Center, Ted has learned coping techniques to ease the caregiving burden, such as remembering to breathe, narrowing the sphere of the problem (“focus on the one thing you can give”), and, not least of all, forgiving himself. “I don’t think it’s possible to go through this without feeling guilty,” says Ted. “I knew I needed to talk to someone, but I didn’t know there was a path…a lifeline.”

The Aging Center provides

caregivers up to eight free individual and/or group therapy sessions, thanks to a grant from the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments’ Area Agency on Aging.

Spirit of the Springs Celebration Award given to Routon Mayor John Suthers presented the Spirit of the Springs Celebration Award to Ralph Routon in honor of his years of community service and leadership. The award was presented during his retirement celebration Oct. 26.

Routon is an award winning writer who has had an illustrious journalism career. He has stayed very active in the Colorado Springs community, serving on various boards for community organizations including Cheyenne Village, Center for Nonprofit Excellence and others.

He has always embraced the desire to preserve Colorado Springs, Olympic City USA’s truly rich sports heritage. During his career, Routon covered eight Olympic Games and 12 Super Bowls, but what distinguished him was his dedication to local sports.

In 1988, Routon led the effort to lure the Hawaii Islanders to Colorado Springs to become the Sky Sox. He was intimately involved in the long push for the new World Arena, which opened its doors in 1995. He also conceived the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame.

The Wonder of Giving Thanks

By Kay Owen-Larson “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name” Psalm 100:4 Webster’s dictionary defines thanksgiving as, ”The expression of gratitude – as a prayer.” The Bible defines thanksgiving as “thanks, adoration & praise.” So what are we reminded of when we think about that special day we call “Thanksgiving”?

Do we show gratitude; do we give thanks for those things we often take for granted? The older we get the more we realize how much we have to be thankful for.

Now more than ever, we need an “Attitude of Gratitude” A grateful heart doesn’t look for what is missing in their lives, but delights in the things that are present in their lives.

The Lord is most at home in a grateful heart. I have a saying in my home that says, “Grateful Hearts Gathered Here.” It is always a good

reminder of where my heart should be!

We have come to think of Thanksgiving as a time to gather together with family and friends and share the things that mean the most to us. It’s a time to laugh, a time for the kids to play, a time to hug one another, and a time to enjoy the company of our loved ones over a sumptuous dinner. Indeed, these things are something for which we can be thankful.

During this Thanksgiving season, and throughout the entire year, let us truly express our gratitude for our many blessings; let us give thanks, adoration and praise to the God who created and redeemed us.

Psalms 95 says: “Oh come; let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our Salvation. Let us come before His Presence with Thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.”

God bless you, and may you have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving!

Pikes Peak Ringers to present Christmas concerts Join the Pikes Peak Ringers in ringing in the holiday season! Pikes Peak Ringers, an auditioned community handbell choir in Colorado Springs, will present two concerts for the Christmas season entitled “A Symphony of Christmas.”

The first concert will be performed at Broadmoor Community Church, located at 315 Lake Ave, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26.

The second concert will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Community Congregational Church of Manitou Springs, 103 Pawnee Ave. The concerts are free and open to the public; a freewill offering will be taken during the program.

Pikes Peak Ringers was formed in 1991 under the direction of Kevin McChesney. The group has been recognized as one of the premier handbell ensembles in North America.

Mr. McChesney is known as an outstanding handbell clinician, as well as composer and arranger with over 1000 titles in print.

New device stops a cold

Research: Copper stops colds if used early.

Recent research shows you can stop a cold in its tracks if you take one simple step with a new device when you first feel a cold coming on.

Colds start when cold viruses get in your nose. Viruses multiply fast.

Black Forest AARP Chapter members receive awards at state luncheon For Life After 50 Oct. 11 was a busy day for the Black Forest AARP Chapter 1100 members.

After the Chapter meeting 17 chapter members traveled up to the Denver Botanic Gardens for the 2017 AARP Colorado Awards Luncheon.

Chapter 1100 was recognized as the Platinum Chapter for 2017 and presented the AARP Chapter Gold Cup. The cup is awarded annually to the best chapter in Colorado for Community Service. This is the 9th consecutive year Chapter 1100 has received this high honor.

Several individuals in Chapter 1100 also received awards for their outstanding service. Receiving trophies and recognition for their hard work and dedication were: Charles and Shirley Karlstrum – Community Service Award for organizing and participating in the many successful chapter community service projects over the span of several years.

Ray and Linda Rozak – Community Service Award for each serving individually as project leaders on several occasions over the past years that benefited the community.

Don Dinwoodie –Community Service Award for working tirelessly on Chapter projects as well as being very active in several local area community charitable organizations.

Don and Helen Von Gunden – AARP Program/Strategic Priority Award. For working with the Chapter directly and the public indirectly to ensure that the Chapter operates efficiently year after year.

Black Forest Lutheran Church – Community Partner Award for co-hosting the monthly Senior Social with AARP Chapter 1100, plus many other valuable community initiatives during the past year.

Historically the Black Forest AARP Chapter volunteers have assisted in many community service activities such as helping move nursing home residents from an old facility to a new facility, conducting food drives, providing Christmas and Easter baskets for unfortunate children, collecting Box Tops for Education, soda pop tops for McDonald House, volunteering at local schools, helping clean up and reforest after the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest fires – to include helping fire victims move into new residences - and hosting free personal document shredding events annually over the past nine years.

The shredding objective is to “Fight Fraud, Shred Instead”. The 2017shredding event, held in June,

served 371 individuals who came from 18 postal ZIPs. A total of 15,800 pounds of paper were shredded and recycled. The free-will donations by these individuals yielded 610 pounds of non-perishable food and $1,123 in cash – all of which was donated to a local food bank.

Chapter 1100 is the only AARP chapter in the greater Colorado Springs area. It was established 45 years ago and meets at noon the second Wednesday of the month.

Membership is open to all ages. The Chapter motto and goal is ”To Serve not to be Served”. Interested individuals should consider visiting the next Chapter meeting, November 8 at the Black Forest Lutheran Church, 12455 Black Forest Road. The program topic will be “Healthy Eating over the Holidays”. An officer is on the way.”

A few minutes later, the officer radioed back in.

“Disregard,” he said. “She got in the backseat by mistake.”

Looking around, he saw three men sitting at a corner table. He got up, staggered to the table, leaned over, and looked the biggest, meanest biker dead in the eye.

“I went by your grandma’s house today and I saw her in the hallway

buck naked,” he jeered. “Man, she is one fine-looking woman!”

The biker looked at him without saying a word. His buddies were confused—this guy had a mean reputation. The drunk leaned on the table again.

“Let’s just say this,” he said.

“Your grandma is the best ever!”

Now the biker stood up, took the drunk by the shoulders, looked him square in the eyes and said, “Grandpa, go home. You’re drunk.”

A rancher was overseeing his herd in a remote, mountainous pasture when a brand-new BMW came toward him in a cloud of dust. The driver, a young man dressed in a designer suit, Gucci shoes, RayBan sunglasses and a Yves Saint Laurent tie, leaned out the window.

“If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?” he asked.

The rancher looked at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looked at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answered, “Sure, why not?”

The yuppie parked his car, whipped out his MacBook Pro, connected it to his cell phone, and surfed to a NASA page online, where he called up a satellite to get an exact fix on his location. Then he fed the data to another NASA satellite to scan the area and take an ultra-high-resolution photo. He opened the image in Photoshop and exported it to an image processing facility in Germany. Within seconds, the yuppie received an email on his smartphone. He accessed a MS-SQL database through an ODBC-connected Excel spreadsheet and, after a few minutes, received a response. Finally, he printed out a full-color, 150-page report on his high-tech, miniaturized LaserJet printer, turned to the rancher and said, “You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.”

“That’s right,” said the rancher.

“Well, fair’s fair. I guess you can take one of my calves.”

He watched the young man select an animal and looked on with amusement as the young man stuffed it into the trunk of his car.

Then he said, “Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?”

The young man thought about it, then replied, “Okay, why not?”

“You’re a congressman in the U.S. government.”

“Wow!” said the yuppie, stunned.

“That’s correct, but how did you guess that?”

“No guessing required,” answered the rancher. “You showed up here even though nobody called you, wanting to get paid for an answer I already knew and a question I never asked. Services are offered in the east building at 1616 W. Bijou St. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 385-7920 ext. 100. Cost is $45 for first visit, $35 thereafter.

Golden Circle Meal Sites This program serves nutritious meals in a social group setting to eligible diners.

You are eligible if: you are 60+ years old or married to someone age 60+,or disabled and residing in a facility listed below. Meal donation is $2.25 but no eligible person is denied lunch because they can’t pay. Guest lunch is $6.50. Call the number (listed below) for your meal location one day in advance before 2 p.m. No reservations are necessary for Acacia Park Apartments, the Senior Center or Fountain Valley Center.

Children ages 6-16 will perform a patriotic musical recital in honor of our veterans and their families. A variety of musical instruments as well as vocals will be performed.

1:30-3. $5. Taste the talent of friends and local pastry chefs from our community. Two groups will be competing: Patrons and Professionals! 20 contestants max for each category.
