More to a mouth than a smile

Community. This one word holds so much meaning. It is our support system, our relationships, our geography, our responsibility. However, it is often misunderstood in it’s modern usage. Community today looks so dramatically different from the communities of even 40 years ago. The speed of travel and communication has transformed what it means to be a community. It used to mean a group of less than 100 people, living, loving, working, playing, and dying together in one part of the world. Now people create their own communities, evicting and embracing as it suits their current mood or needs. The trouble with this new fluid, piece-meal community is we have lost some of what it means to be responsible to and for one another.

This modern type of community is about what is convenient and desirable for your own needs at the present moment. But some of the world’s most profound beauty is found through pushing past personal discomfort. Being

around others who are different than you or think differently than you is hard.

But finding relationship and common ground on the other side of that discomfort is pure blessing. And, through those relationships we learn a little more about ourselves and have a new appreciation of the world through another’s eyes. We grow and change.

Often, in this new convenience-driven community, people with special needs are pushed to the outskirts. They are different, and their way of life is inconvenient for others. Unlike before when people knew their neighbors and spent time with them, it is easy to simply not see others as we weave through life hopping from one task or hobby to the next. That is why our office has always and continues to specialize in adapting to treat patients with special needs. You may have noticed we recently changed our name to Briargate Advanced Family Dental. Our passion for and commitment to community is a big part of why we chose to change our name. Mark Johnson - the wolf whisperer

M

ark “Wolf” Johnson never set out to open a wolf rescue.

Back in 1996, a friend of Johnson called and said he had some wolf pups.

“I said, ‘I want one,’” he said.

So Johnson and his late wife Cheryl took in the 4 ½-week old hybrid wolf Cheyenne into their home.

“She was going to be my only wolf, because of all the legal problems of owning a wolf. Next thing you know, I’m rescuing wolves and wolf dogs,” he added. “When I first got Cheyenne, I had never had a wolf. I didn’t know much about them. I started buying books and reading and learning all the things I could.”

And so the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Foundation was established in 2001. The rescue, located in Guffey, has rescued 50 animals since that time, according to Johnson. Cheyenne quickly became the face of the rescue and became known as “the healing wolf,” because of her ability to connect with peoples’ emotions and needs, Johnson said.

“People saw what I was doing with Cheyenne and they started bringing me animals,” Johnson said. “I just started taking them in and helping them all I could.”

Cheyenne passed away Feb. 2, 2009, but met more than 22,000 people in her lifetime, according to Johnson. One example of how Cheyenne touched peoples’ lives was a hiker who lost his toes to frostbite during a failed hiking trip in the mountains.

After meeting Cheyenne, the hiker returned to hike that same trail that cost him his toes to heal emotionally. The hiker credited Cheyenne for encouraging him, Johnson said. Cheyenne was also a key companion to Cheryl in her final days, as she fell victim to cancer.

The nonprofit organization is committed to the caring for and survival of wolves in as natural an environment as possible. It provides sanctuary and rehabilitation for wolves who have suffered from injuries or abuse, and permanent sanctuary for those unable to be released back into the wild. The organization relies on financial and volunteer donations.

Johnson offers private tours of the rescue to the public – free of charge. Tours are by reservation only. Of course, donations are welcomed and there are T-shirts, hats, posters and other souvenirs available for purchase.

“I enjoy the education part of offering tours,” he said. “I can change people’s minds many times.

They come up here with many negative thoughts about wolves and then I change it.”

The tours get people up close and personal with some of the wolves. That includes going into their pens, petting them and getting kissed by them.

“Let wolves kiss you. If you back away, it’s an insult,” Johnson added.

On this writer’s visit to the rescue, my wife Ashley and son Jaxson thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the wolves. My son’s favorite – Thor – is a huge beast of a wolf who has throat issues, which affects his bark and sometimes his eating, according to Johnson.

Nevertheless, the animal was quick to come in for some petting and gave my son a huge kiss.

“He just got ‘Thor-ed,’” Johnson said. “We have

The animal then rolled over on his back, much like a dog, allowing my Ashley and Jaxson to rub his belly.

Johnson gives four tours a day in the fall and spring, five a day in the summer and two a day during the winter. He and his current wife Catherine live on the property. They live off their social

security. All donations and money made in the gift shop go to the wolves. Volunteers aren’t paid, however they’re fed.

The couple makes trips down to Colorado Springs every Monday and Friday, where the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market on South Academy donates all its old meat.

It takes around $50,000 a year to operate the rescue. The 35 acres it sits on outside of Guffey was donated to Johnson. He’s currently trying to raise money to purchase a larger, 188-acre chunk of land down the road, so that he can take in more animals. The past few years, Johnson has had to turn away a number of wolves due to lack of room.

He also has hopes to build dorms and a kitchen for volunteers who help out at the rescue. Thus far, he’s raised around $100,000, he said. There is a GoFundMe link online where people can donate: https://www.gofundme. com/f/188-acres-for-rmwf.

Many of the animals Johnson takes in have been abused and neglected. It sometimes takes a while to socialize them with people. Johnson has been bitten a dozen times or so, but it’s never been anything too serious.

“The bites don’t hurt,” he said.

“What hurts is the numbing shots they give me at the hospital.”

Before opening the rescue, Johnson, who turns 72 soon, worked a variety of jobs.

“You name it, I’ve done it. I watched my dad who for 37 years worked the same job, didn’t really like it and didn’t get promoted for the top position. I learned it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” Johnson

said. “I’ve done anything and everything I wanted to do. I’ve been in real estate, I’ve been in retail, used to restore and operate steam locomotives for a living.”

That included working on trains for television shows “Wild Wild West,” “Petticoat Junction,” “Bonanza,” “Little House on the Prairie” and ran the trains for the movie “Back to the Future 3.”

Johnson was also a volunteer firefighter for 30 years.

Rocky Mountain Wildlife Foundation’s motto is: “Dedicated to the preservation of those who came before us.” That’s been Johnson’s passion for the past 18 years.

“We encourage an interest in and an understanding of wolves by providing opportunities for people of

all ages to interact with wolves and learn about them, how to live safely with wildlife and to understand the important role we humans have in the continual survival of wolf populations,” he said.

It’s said that southern Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo mountains get their name (Spanish for “blood of Christ”) from the red color they are drenched in at sunset every evening. In fall, they are tinged with crimson, ochre and gold foliage, too.

If you’re equipped with four-wheel drive, head to the Alpine Loop Scenic and Historic Byway, connecting the mountain towns of Ouray, Silverton and Lake City. This rugged route has hiking and mountain-biking trails galore, mining history and unfettered views of shimmering aspens and 14,000-foot peaks.

MEDICINE BOW RANGE

Towering summits, high-mountain lakes ringed by blazing aspens and roaming wildlife are among the sights that await in this high-alpine range that covers 100 miles across the state line into Wyoming.

Set up basecamp in: Walden How to take in the colors: State Forest State Park is considered the moose-viewing capital of Colorado, with some 600 of Bullwinkle’s buddies roaming free. Wilderness access is easy if you start at the Moose Visitor Center. Tip: Always use caution and never get close to a moose (as tempting as that selfie may be).

Make a stop at Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge, where avid birders flock to spot Wilson’s snipe, American avocet and dowitchers among the refuge’s prairie wetlands, surrounded by reddening prairie grasses in the fall. In late September to early October, migration peaks to some 8,000 waterfowl.

Concrete Couch expands horizons

A lot of people might have difficulty picturing positive possibilities for a parcel of land left largely neglected for years; fortunately, Steve Wood, founder/director of Concrete Couch, and Craig Cantrell, site manager, have vivid imaginations with a community park in mind.

While many may only see overgrown weeds, mounds of discarded asphalt and concrete and trash, Wood, Cantrell and numerous volunteers of all ages see much more.

Certainly, the park will reflect the creativity of all involved, it will also serve as a place to bring people together.

Pikes Peak Community College, Community Prep School, Atlas Preparatory School, students from Colorado College and numerous area businesses have already been involved. Other nonprofit groups are also playing a role. This includes Kids on Bikes and the Cheyenne Mountain Teen Program who participate in Tuesday Trails, to help build bike and walking trails on the property.

Cantrell’s background is in business management, has volunteered on numerous projects and has been friends with Wood for many years. “Steve drug me out of retirement,� he said. “I agreed to a four-year plan. I want to see it (Concrete Coyote) get as far as it can during that time.�

Wood is an award-winning artist who started Public Art Associates in 1991 as a way to bring artists and others together. Concrete Couch grew out of this and continues to expand its outreach. Eventually, the organization’s offices will be housed on the Concrete Coyote site. Currently, has a staff of 11, including teachers, and a

The site had been populated by the homeless for years. Reminders of those days are evident. Wood and Cantrell acknowledged trash on the property is still an issue, although far from what it was when

Concrete Couch took possession. “We plan projects that aren’t just about garbage cleanup because that’s not a whole lot of fun,” Wood said, “but that does end up getting done a lot, too.”

Broad-base support is evident in the 900 donors supporting the organization. Wood is actively seeking donations from corporations and applying for grants for the community park project. Tours of

• Come to accept that you’ve been disappointed and why. When we survive hard stuff and keep going, we can become more resilient. That doesn’t mean we have to feel great about it or be thankful for it or make it a “good thing.” We can still feel the hurt and start looking for other ways to make our lives better.

Disappointments often come with dreams. So I say, keep dreaming and know that hurts happen. Keep working through them and create new dreams.

A

s the world’s population ages dramatically and rates of dementia increase, public concern is growing as well, leading to a phenomenon known as DementiaRelated Anxiety (DRA).

DRA is defined as an anxiety response to the possibility of getting dementia, regardless of one’s age and cognitive abilities. It is a byproduct of what might seem a good thing—increased awareness of dementia—but that awareness can, in turn, only make dementia seem more threatening.

These worries can sometimes spiral out of control.

Hallmark signs of DRA include devoting excessive amounts of time and attention on small memory lapses and viewing these changes as symptoms of dementia, experiencing uncontrollable thoughts and anxiety about getting dementia and regularly looking for signs of dementia in one’s own body or behavior.

When someone repeatedly interprets normal memory lapses as a symptom of dementia, it is only natural for a person to eventually come to believe that his or her memory is truly impaired. In fact, individuals with high DRA may continue to report serious complaints about their memory even when objective, cognitive tests indicate no signs of cognitive decline beyond normal age-related change.

However, this does not change how distressing these concerns may be. The fear and anxiety that these individuals face are very real, and the effects are very real as well.

When someone repeatedly interprets normal memory lapses as a symptom of dementia, it is only natural for a person to eventually come to believe that his or her memory is truly impaired.

The telltale signs of DRA (excessive and uncontrollable anxiety about getting dementia, hypervigilance about memory changes and symptom-seeking) are associated with having more negative attitudes about one’s own aging, lower life satisfaction and lower likelihood of engaging in health-promoting behaviors like staying active, maintaining a balanced diet and getting regular physical exams. At this stage of DRA research, it is unclear what these associations mean.

Does DRA cause outcomes like lower life satisfaction or does having lower life satisfaction make a person vulnerable to DRA? Despite this uncertainty, it is apparent that DRA is, in some way, related to outcomes that are detrimental to physical, mental and emotional functioning; in other words, there is a cost to worrying too much.

It is helpful to consider if and how DRA might be impacting you. Can you identify the source of your excessive anxiety? If so, you may be able to remove stressors that are within your control. Many people believe the myth that dementia is part of the normal aging process when, in fact, it is not.

It is completely normal to forget where you put your car keys or have trouble remembering that word on the tip of your tongue; dementia, however, is when you experience significant decline in memory, language, reasoning, mood and behavior in ways that can eventually impair all aspects of daily functioning. In these cases, an important first step is to seek information about the normal age-related changes one might expect in older adulthood. It may help to have a discussion with friends and family about your concerns and ask for their cooperation in monitoring your memory concerns and complaints.

The good news is that DRA itself is not necessarily harmful. Like many things in life, it exists on a spectrum along which a healthy balance can be achieved. Researchers suggest moderate levels of DRA can motivate one to be more engaged in healthpromoting behaviors and future planning.

The phenomenon of DRA is relatively new, and researchers are still exploring the specific factors that lead some people to experience higher levels of DRA than others. As this field unfolds, the best advice is to do all you can to stay healthy and to be aware of worries that make it difficult for you to do so. As one famous quote says, “My life has been full of terrible misfortunes, most of which never happened” (Montaigne).

Maybe that is what I did to them 50-60 years ago! Every day they drop by or call me and question me, “Are you using your cane?” or “Mom, you need to do a better job of bathing” or “Mom you didn’t pull your pants all the way up!” or “You are going to fall if you are not careful.”

I have a friend who says she is going through the same thing with her kids. So, I am writing you to get this message out to all kids who are supporting parents who are in a time of transition from independent to dependent.

Here is my message: “I love you dearly, I appreciate your support at this difficult time of my life. However, when you nag at me to do your wishes, I feel frustrated as if I am the child and you are the parent. Just love me and talk to me about your lives.

Let me be myself. Yes, I might fall.

Yes, my behavior may not be what you want it to be. If you can do this, you will be letting me do things my way. That gives me that little bit of independence that I so cherish. It was not a problem, my husband said. However, now my son seems to be having a crisis of sort and is showing up here a few nights a week. He lost his job and I have been helping him financially. I can tell my husband is becoming irritated at this, but I have no idea what to do about it. This is my son, and he can’t help the way he is. I need your advice. Open the dialogue with your spouse about the difficult place you are in. Surely, your son must have some professional psychological

support. I suggest you tap into the professional arena so you have trusted help with your son, where goals can be established, etc. Mental illness within a family is a very real challenge for as long as the person is mentally ill. I’m afraid it is a life sentence, although professional help and medications can ease the situation. My heart goes out to you with good wishes for a continued happy marriage. CSHS-Palmer Alumni Association announces 2019 Hall of Fame For Life After 50 The 2019 CSHS-Palmer Alumni Association Hall of Fame Inductees are Norman J. Peterson, Class of 1965 and Beth (Morrison) Klein, Class of 1979.

They will be inducted into the HOF at this year’s Homecoming Celebrations on Saturday, October 12th with the annual Alumni Brunch beginning at 9 a.m., followed by the Induction Ceremony in the Palmer High School auditorium at 10 a.m. All CSHS-Palmer Alumni are invited to attend as many events as possible.

Hall of Fame Biographies—by Michelle Elstun ’70, Director

Norman J. Peterson, a 1965 graduate of PHS, also attended Ivywild & Columbia elementary schools, South Jr. High and graduated from the University of Colorado with a doctorate!

He began his career as an Associate Director of the International Student Exchange Program at Georgetown University in the early 1980s and soon stepped into the Executive Director position for the Liaison Group for International

Education Exchange.

Using his expertise and experience Norman founded and directed the Alliance for International Education and Cultural Exchange, a major international education coordinating/ policy coalition in DC. His second career began in 1994 at Montana State University serving as their Vice Provost for International Education, accomplishing over 40 years of professional leadership in the International Education arena. He retired in 2015 and resides in Boise Idaho.

To quote one of his many references “Norm has become a legend in the field of international education, innovating and launching important programs in multiple arenas and insuring that international educational exchange has influence at the highest levels of leadership......His influence has impacted the lives of tens of thousands of professionals and those who’ve themselves been exchange students or scholars all over the world...”

Beth (Morrison) Klein graduated PHS in 1979, celebrating the 100th class to do so. Upon graduation she began working with child abuse situations as a para-professional for the El Paso County District Attorney’s Office, bringing to the public forefront needed legislation and updated education about signs of child abuse.

Awards are many, but those that set her apart include being a top 500 Plaintiff Lawyer in the US for 2007 Lawdragon; a top 25 women lawyer and top 100 lawyer in Colorado; continuing to reign as a Colorado Superlawyer from 2006 - present.

Most impressive among all her recognitions, Beth is celebrated as a Women Who Changed the Heart of the City of Denver and from More Magazine – has been included in the 50 Women in the World You Want on Your Side.

She has trained nearly 1000 lawyers in the trial and advocacy arena as well as those who serve abused and neglected children in Colorado and California. She founded Children’s Angels with her husband to battle child abuse. By creating The Klein Frank Foundation, it has made it possible to successfully combat exploitation and slavery.

The challenge remains that there are few opportunities for seniors over the age of 75 to participate in regular physical activities. Program directors and fitness professionals don’t want to assume the risk of training an older person. Without physical activity, strength decreases. Consequently, there is less chance of muscular recovery due to a fall.

In 2014, The Society of Physical Therapy Science did several controlled, clinical studies with participants age 75+. (Subjects were excluded if they had neurological impairments, severe cardiovascular diseases, persistent joint pain, or musculoskeletal impairment; or required assistance from another person or a device during ambulation.)

Basically it was a fall prevention study, specifically designed to increase the balance and strength of those deemed “too old to get stronger.” The groups trained under supervision to strengthen their hip flexors, hip extensors, hip abductors, knee flexors, knee extensors, ankle dorsiflexors and flexors. Their progress was measured by a hand-held dynamometer. After the intervention, both groups showed significant improvement in the strength of all seven muscle groups. The increase in strength resulted in lower extremity balance improvement.

Here’s the best part - the fall index scores of both groups decreased from 59 to 44.5, a statistically significant decrease from a clinical standpoint.

They’re cheap, pretty darn safe and easy to use. You can buy a set for less than twenty dollars. According to the Society of Physical Therapy Science, they are practical because they have only a “small risk of injury.” They provide consistent tension, and are easily portable.

“Elastic-resistance exercises help not only in rehabilitation but also in other areas because they have been proven to improve muscle strength and stability.

In just eight weeks, the balance exercises and elastic-resistance exercises conducted in the study helped 75-plus seniors improve their leg muscle strength and mind-muscle connection.” (Lee and Park) “We conclude that elastic resistance and balance-related exercises are acceptable as fall-prevention exercises for the elderly. We also suggest that these exercises be used appropriately according to the person’s personal physical characteristics and needs.

Fall-prevention exercises for the elderly should not pose injury risks, and should be easy to practice, even at home.

The balance exercises and elastic-resistance exercises used in the present study are accessible to the

elderly, because they do not need specialized equipment and can be adjusted to personal physical strength.”

The participants spent two days a week under researcher supervision, and then trained on their own for three days a week. If you want to give it a try, YouTube has free resistance band videos for seniors in all states of ability, from active to chair-bound.

Next time, I’ll go into detail about how to do these exercises.

Remember, your goal will be to build upper and lower body strength, muscle density, balance and mindmuscle connections (proprioceptive muscle coordination/facilitation) so that you can prevent a fall. If you happen to fall anyway, you’ll have more strength to be able to crawl to a safe place and hoist yourself up to grab the phone. RECIPES/from page 20 To make Red Radish Chili Pickles: In small saucepan, heat vinegar, water and sugar. Add chili and radish; remove from heat.

To make Wagyu Burgers: Season Wagyu grind with salt and pepper, to taste. Mix in mustard, if desired. Form into four patties.

Lightly brush both sides of burgers with oil. In frying pan, sear burgers over high heat then reduce heat to medium and cook until well caramelized. Flip and repeat process on other side.

In frying pan, lightly toast burger buns.

Spread mayonnaise on buns; top with lettuce, tomato and burger.

Spread spoonful onion jam on each burger then finish with Red Radish Chili Pickles.

I Love My Pet

eet brothers Ping, left, and Relish. Both are chihuahua/weiner dog mixes we adopted from the Colorado Springs Small Dog Rescue back

in July.

I set out to adopt one dog, but once I heard that the brothers had never slept apart, I had to bring home both. It was quite a surprise to my husband.

Ping is rambunctious and always looking to get into something. He will chew anything he can get his little teeth on. Relish is a little more lowkey. Both love playing with their newfound “big brother,” Berkley, my mom’s older, terrier/schnauzer mix dog.

The brothers are cuddly dogs and love sleeping in our bed. Ping tends to wake up my husband at 6 a.m. daily. The brothers then have wrestling matches right after. Despite a potty training battle, both are great additions to our family.

The cab driver, an older gentleman, opened his eyes wide and stared at the woman, but made no attempt to start the cab.

The woman glared back at him and said, “What’s wrong with you, honey? Haven’t you seen a naked woman before?”

The old driver slowly answered, “Let me tell you something, lady. I wasn’t staring at you like you think.

That would not be proper.”

A man decides to join a monastery. In order to be accepted into the monastery he has to first take a three-year vow of silence. At the end of the three years he’s allowed to say two words.

He keeps his vow the entire three years, not saying a word, and at the end he says, “Bed hard.”

He then spends another three years again keeping his vow of silence. At the end of those years he simply says, “Food cold.”

After another three years of silence the man is about to get in to the monastery when he goes to the head monk and tells him, “I quit.”

“Figures,” said the head monk.

“You haven’t stopped complaining since you got here!”

UCCS Aging Center to host free caregiver workshop on memory For Life After 50 The UCCS Aging Center will host a free workshop for caregivers focused on memory concerns and what to do about them.

The workshop will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, from 1-4 p.m., at MacKenzie Place Senior Living, 1605 Elm Creek View (next to Nancy Lewis Park).

Attendees will hear a presentation

by Dr. Jessica Zamzow, UCCS Aging Center staff psychologist, who will help participants distinguish between

signs of typical aging and when a screening might be warranted. Kendall Weber, UCCS Aging Center clinician, also will discuss the balance of independence and safety for care recipients, followed by Terri Cassidy, owner of Health Promotion Partners, providing resources and information on driving transitions.

Refreshments will be served, courtesy of MacKenzie Place, and an RSVP is required, as seating is limited. To reserve a spot, contact the UCCS Aging Center at (719) 255-8002.

Cats that bite: Love nips or not?

Dear Miss Kitty, My one-year-old cat, Thor, is biting me all the time. He can be super sweet and then, out of nowhere, he will bite when I’m walking by him or even just sitting on the sofa.

Dear Bitten, Cats bite for many different reasons. Some of the most common are boredom, lack of training, and overstimulation. So, we need to understand why he is biting to solve this behavior.

Your first step is to make sure Thor isn’t biting because he’s in pain.

Cats can hide their illnesses, so please see your vet to rule this out.

Boredom

Thor is lunging and biting as you walk by him because he is bored.

Anything that moves becomes a target for playtime!

Young, indoor cats need several vigorous play sessions throughout the day. Figure out what time of day these attacks occur most often and then start the play session 20 to 30 minutes earlier.

Use an interactive wand toy to entice him to play and get him to chase it vigorously for 10 minutes or more.

Lack of Training

Sometimes owners make the mistake of allowing their kitten to play with their hands and “play bite”. At first, this can seem like fun, harmless play, but when the kitten grows up the little nips become painful bites. Your cat won’t understand why suddenly your hands are off limits.

If this is the case with Thor, you will have to re-train him not to bite hands or any part of you. The most

important rule is that everyone in the household will have to consistently follow the training process and always use positive reinforcement.

When Thor is biting during playtime, say “ow”, stand up and put yourself in time out. Have a designated room, go in, and shut the door for 2 or 3 minutes.

This technique is effective because what Thor really wants is attention and playtime with you. When he bites and you stop playtime, he isn’t getting what he wants.

Return to play and praise him when he is not biting. You have to be very quick and catch him doing the right behavior, which is playing and not biting.

From this point forward, reward him with more play when he doesn’t bite. You can even give a small treat a couple of times during the play session to further encourage no biting.

If Thor bites, immediately say “ow” and put yourself in time out again.

Remember, the key to re-training is always being consistent and using positive reinforcement so he learns which behavior is good and gets rewarded.

The third one — although it shares DNA with our beloved mutts—is pesky, sneaky, and hides under the bed even when my husband isn’t watching football on television.

We call it The Gray Dog. This beast’s unavoidable presence calls for vigilance with the vacuum, and sharp eyes when serving meals. Have you ever watched aghast as your mother-in-law waves goodbye with Fido’s fluff adorning her velvet skirt?

Inwardly cringed as Trixie’s tresses become the secret ingredient in the fancy dessert you’re serving? This beast is dog hair.

Upkeep aside, a dog’s coat is actually quite a marvel. Coats can vary wildly in color, texture and pattern; even in volume. Most dogs have three types of hair—ground hairs (or undercoat), guard hairs, and whiskers. Ground hairs lie closest to the dog’s skin, and act primarily as insulation. These hairs grow in a cluster from a single follicle, and are generally downy.

Guard hairs are coarser, thicker in diameter and longer than the undercoat. These sentinels are considered the dog’s primary coat.

They provide an additional layer of insulation and protect the skin from superficial injuries. Whiskers are the hairs that grow from deeply-rooted follicles in a dog’s muzzle and eyelids. They are sensory structures—or “feelers”—that alert a dog when something gets too close to its eyes or face.

Shedding occurs when a dog’s fur reaches a genetically determined length. At that point, it stops growing and falls out. Although it happens year round, shedding is more evident during changes in the length of sunlight and environmental

temperature. When days are longer and warmer, shedding allows a lighter undercoat to grow in, and helps a dog stay cooler. As temperatures drop and days become shorter, the undercoat sheds again, to make room for a thicker undercoat. This winter coat traps the air warmed by the dog’s body, and keeps it close to the skin.

Shedding can also occur when a female dog comes out of heat or gives birth, or after a dog has had anesthesia. Excessive shedding—especially when accompanied by a dull or poor coat, itching or skin irritation—could signal a health problem, and may require a consult with your vet.

All dogs shed, although there are breeds that shed less than others.

Shedding is a completely natural— and necessary—process. Frequent bathing may help, but is not a solution.

Shaving certainly gets the fur off—but it, also, may leave a dog uncomfortable and unprotected from the cold in the winter, or susceptible to sunburn in the summer. The best way to minimize shedding is to feed your dog a healthy diet, and give him or her a gentle brushing daily.

As long as we are lucky enough to have dogs, we will always have The Gray Dog. At least it won’t tip the garbage, eat the contents, and need out at 3 a.m. … in the rain.

Fountain Valley Senior Center 5745 Southmoor Drive - 520-6470 FVSC Demand Rides The Fountain Valley Senior Center would like to implement a demand ride (same day rides) program. We have several days where our drivers have idle time; usually mid-mornings. What we would like to start to do is use this idle time for on-demand rides. These rides could be for going shopping at Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Walgreens or even to the park. We would need to keep these rides in the Fountain Valley area. Our transportation history shows; our idle times to be 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. What you need to do: • You would need to sign up for these demand rides in the Transportation office, we do ask for your patience because even though we have some Idle time to fill, if a medical appointment is involved this would have to take priority, this would be rare.

• We would also ask that if you are shopping to keep the bags to what you can carry.

• The rides would need to depart and return to the Senior Center.

• When shopping be ready at the pick times the driver tells you, Very important.

Note: this service might not always be available daily, in lieu of driver call offs.
