History more than hobby for author/musician

A

ward-winning historian, author and musician Mark Lee Gardner doesn’t just sent in a

library sifting through old archive materials when researching one of his nonfiction books on the old west.

The Cascade resident prefers to hit the road and see the land, surroundings and walk the trails where the subject of his books once traveled.

“I do original research and visit the historic sites,” he said. “I like to be on the ground where these historic events occurred.”

New technology and the Internet come in handy these days. Gardner is able to pull up old newspaper pages without having to spend hours in a library.

Nevertheless, he still enjoys getting out in the field and getting his hands dirty.

“That’s the fun part,” he added.

Gardner’s previous books include “To Hell on a Fast Horse: The Untold Story of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett” and “Shot All To Hell: Jesse James, the Northfield Raid, and the Wild West’s Greatest Escape” both published by HarperCollins.

The history buff has appeared on the History Channel, PBS American Experience, ABC World News, AMC, the Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel, Encore Westerns Channel, Book TV, NPR’s All Things Considered, Irish National Radio, and BBC Radio. He writes for both popular and scholarly audiences, having published with numerous periodicals and websites such as The Daily Beast, American Heritage, Wild West, American Cowboy, True West, New Mexico Magazine and Journal of the West. Passionate about pickleball

A

handful of pickleball players all agreed on one thing – it’s addictive.

The racquet sport, played with paddles a whiffle ball on a scaled down tennis court of sorts, has gained popularity amongst players of all ages.

Here in Colorado Springs, it’s no different as the area pickleball club, the Pikes Peak Pickleball Association, has seen its numbers increase drastically.

In September, association members Steve and Ramona Boone hosted nearly 500 pickleball players from 23 states and from Canada and Mexico. The Boones are directors of the USA Pickleball Association Great Plains Regional Tournament. Of those who played in the tournament, more than 350 players were over the age of 50, according to Steve.

and we get a little less mobile, it’s really easy to play this sport compared to the ones we used to play,” he said.

The Boones, both retired military, took of the sport years ago when they saw an ad for pickleball lessons at Monument Valley Park. They quickly

became addicted to the sport, formed a club and things took off from there.

The couple hosted their first tournament in 2012, and 85 players took part. The Boones took the money raised and gave it to the Colorado Springs parks and rec department.

With each tournament that followed, more and more money was raised.

Then an anonymous donor stepped in, and with the park and rec department’s match, $600,000 had been raised for the construction of 15 brand new pickleball courts which replaced the dilapidated tennis courts.

“We told city if they built courts would bring regional to city,” Steve said. “The courts are used all year-round and are full every day. This has been a very successful story.”

The association started with just 40 members but has exploded to 800, according to Ramona. She likes the fact that pickleball games are short

The association includes players as young as 8 years old and as old as 90, Steve mentioned.

“It’s really easy to get into this sport. That’s another thing that makes it so inviting, it’s easy to play,” he said. “As long as you can still walk, you can play this sport. It’s the fun part, that really appeals to all ages.”

Nancy Steffy first got involved with pickleball in 2010 while visiting her parents in Green Valley, Ariz.

Steffy had taught pickleball in her physical education classes in Florence but had no idea adults were playing the sport until a friend in Arizona encouraged her to play.

“I love the social part. Anybody and everybody can play it, whether it’s competitive or non-competitive,” she said.

Fellow former physical education teacher Theresa Melius also taught the sport to her students for year, but didn’t actually play herself until eight years ago. Now she can’t stop playing.

During warmer months she plays here in Colorado Springs daily, if possible.

During the winter, she keeps busy playing in Mexico.

“This sport is a great physical activity. It’s a great way to meet new people,” she said.

Theresa is a member at-large and tournament coordinator for the PPPA. She said the sport is a fun activity for those who are retired or thinking about retiring.

“It’s a good cohesive group of people. It’s very all-inclusive,” she said. “Once you start playing, it’s addictive. I’ve met a lot of great people that have become friends.”

Randy Beaubien took up the sport just a few years ago. Some friends of his returned from Phoenix raving about the game.

“I thought the name of the game was so silly, I thought it was some kids’ game or something,” he said. “I took to the sport like fish to water. I can’t imagine playing anything that’s more fun. Anybody who’s played any racquet sports can transition to pickleball easily.”

As the association continues to grow, there’s rarely a time when the pickleball courts at Monument Valley Park aren’t packed. The city has expanded with a handful of courts at other parks, but more are needed according to Steve.

“We have so many people playing the game, that we have to take turns,” he said.

While a majority of the association’s members are retired (“because they have time to play every day,” according to Steve) more players of all ages are always welcome. There are never any judgements, and players are always willing to help newcomers with the sport.

“We have open play every day from 9 a.m. to noon,” Ramona added.

One last note: If you’re being pressured by a concerned family member to “get in shape or die”, that in itself can be demotivating.

Colorado Attorney General sues Purdue Pharma for its role in opioid epidemic For Life After 50 Attorney General Cynthia H. Coffman filed a lawsuit Sept. 6 against Purdue Pharma L.P. and Purdue Pharma, Inc. alleging that the companies’ fraudulent and deceptive marketing of prescription opioids played a significant role in causing the opioid epidemic ravaging Colorado and the rest of the nation.

The lawsuit claims that Purdue misled Colorado health care providers and consumers about the addiction risks associated with prescription opioids and encouraged doctors to prescribe more opioids and at higher doses for longer periods of time. The result was a financial windfall for the company and a historic deadly epidemic that has killed thousands of Coloradans and left many thousands more struggling with opioid addiction.

The complaint alleges that Purdue’s decades-long marketing campaign sought to flood Colorado with prescription opioids. Purdue funded purportedly independent national pain organizations and experts and deployed an army of sales representatives to convince Colorado health care providers, policymakers, and the general public that prescription opioids were safe and effective for treating chronic pain. Specifically, the lawsuit claims that: • Purdue downplayed the risk of

addiction associated with opioids and the extent to which it could be managed; • Purdue exaggerated the benefits of opioid treatment by overstating their efficacy at treating chronic non-cancer pain and improving patients’ functionality and quality of life; • Purdue manufactured a fake syndrome called “pseudoaddiction” in order to counter claims that opioids could lead to abuse and addiction; • Purdue deceptively advised health care professionals that they could manage and avoid addiction in their patients; • Purdue misrepresented that OxyContin is effective for 12 hours, which led doctors and patients to increase the frequency and dosages of OxyContin and enhance the likelihood of addiction; • Purdue downplayed the increased risks posed by higher dosages of prescription opioids and advised health care professionals that they were violating their Hippocratic Oath and failing their patients unless they treated pain symptoms with opioids; • Purdue overstated the efficacy of abuse-deterrent formulations of opioids; • Purdue downplayed the severity of opioid withdrawal; and • Purdue misrepresented the risks

and benefits of opioids as compared to the risks and benefits associated with alternative pain treatments.

The lawsuit accuses Purdue of violating the Colorado Consumer Protection Act by engaging in fraudulent business practices and creating a public nuisance that endangered the public.

“Purdue unleashed a surge of prescription opioids on Coloradans while hiding the facts about their drugs’ addictive properties,” said Attorney General Coffman.

“Their corporate focus on making money took precedence over patients’ long-term health, and Colorado has been paying the price in loss of life and devastation of its communities as they struggle to address the ongoing opioid crisis.

“Purdue’s habitforming medications coupled with their reckless marketing have robbed children of their parents, families of their sons and daughters, and destroyed the lives of our friends, neighbors, and co-workers. While no amount of money can bring back loved-ones, it can compensate for the enormous costs brought about by Purdue’s intentional misconduct.”

“Purdue failed in its responsibility to ensure that consumers understood the risks associated with their products,” said Governor John Hickenlooper. “We applaud this action and believe it is appropriate to safeguard the health of all Coloradans.

We will do everything we can to support transparency in health care.

Pharmaceutical companies play a vital role in our health care system, but trust in those companies and their products is critical.”

As detailed in the complaint, between 1999 and 2017, there have been approximately 3,000 prescription opioid-related deaths in Colorado, not including overdoses from synthetic opioids such as Fentanyl, or those who turned to heroin when they were no longer able to afford or access prescription opioids.

Despite a decline in overall opioid prescriptions in Colorado since 2013, the 372 opioid deaths in 2017 represent a 26 percent increase in just the last four years. Colorado’s most vulnerable citizens have been especially impacted by the opioid epidemic. As of 2014, 3.6 of every 1,000 children born in a Colorado hospital suffer from neonatal abstinence syndrome, a 160 percent increase from 1999.And opioid-related hospitalizations for Coloradans over the age of 65 increased by 83 percent over the past eight years.

Attorney General Coffman has been part of a bipartisan coalition of over 40 state attorneys general investigating and prosecuting opioid manufacturers and distributors for their role in causing the opioid epidemic.

As announced in 2017, Coffman and her colleagues in other states issued subpoenas to Endo Pharmaceuticals, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Teva Pharmaceuticals, and Allergan plc, as well as the drug distributors AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health, and McKesson. Colorado has been among the states leading the investigations of these companies over the past year.

“Today’s lawsuit is only the beginning,” said Coffman. “My office, in partnership with federal, state, and local authorities around the country, will continue to investigate and pursue justice against drug companies that earn billions of dollars from prescription opioids while millions of people suffer and die.

“My office stands with all of those first responders, physicians, nurses, social workers, teachers, state agencies, and nonprofits in Colorado that work on the front lines of this epidemic every day. And to those parents, children, friends, and neighbors who continue to fight the scourge of opioid addiction, my office and our state and national partners are committed to holding drug companies accountable and getting you the help you need.”

Let’s talk flu shots

It is that time of year – flu season, and time for all seniors to take precautions to protect themselves and keep healthy. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that all seniors get an annual flu vaccine, and that it be received by the end of October.

Why should seniors be vaccinated against the flu? Not only is it an important preventive tool for people with chronic health conditions, but studies show that people over the age of 65 are most vulnerable to the debilitating effects of flu, such as serious illness, hospitalization and even death.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, there were 3,340 reported hospitalizations of flu during the 2016/2017 flu season and out of those, 1,886 were people 65 years and older. That means that over 56 percent of those hospitalized for flu in Colorado last year were over 65. In addition, 123 flu outbreaks were reported in long term care facilities.

AgeWell Medical Associates, a local medical practice for seniors age 60 and up, recommends that patients go to their primary health care provider to receive their flu vaccine.

Since providers maintain the patient’s medical record, the vaccination is recorded right away, along with information about the source of the vaccine, so that there is never any question about if the patient has been vaccinated.

In addition, one’s regular health

care provider is already familiar with the patient’s health history and concerns. Most primary care practices can easily accommodate their patients for flu shots, either by including one in an existing appointment or by offering flu clinics or other expedited arrangements for shots to be given with minimal waiting.

While a flu vaccine does not provide 100 percent protection against contracting the flu, it is generally effective between 40-60 percent of the time. Some protection is preferable to no protection at all from this serious and potentially fatal disease. A flu shot will also reduce the severity of illness in people who are vaccinated, but still get sick.

For seniors, a special high-potency flu vaccine is recommended because as one ages, his/her immune system weakens. At AgeWell Medical, all patients receive the Fluad vaccine that has an added ingredient to increase the immune response in older patients. Patients should ask their provider about this special vaccine for seniors, as a regular flu shot may not provide enough immunity.

There is really no good reason not to protect oneself from the flu.

The side effects of a vaccination are generally minimal, soreness around the injection site and possibly some temporary muscle aches that can be treated with Tylenol.

Contact your primary care provider this month to schedule your flu vaccine, and gain the peace of mind knowing that you are prepared for the upcoming flu season.

OT, PA, PT, MA – what’s the difference?

By Jan Weeks In our golden years, we visit the doctor more often. He or she sends you off to someone else for tests or rehabilitation, but you may have little or no clue who.

Here’s a quick rundown of the duties behind each medical title.

If you’ve had a lab test, you’ve already met your friendly neighborhood phlebotomist, who draws blood to be analyzed. You may believe they’re direct descendants of Dracula, but phlebotomists perform a vital function in health care. Blood analysis reveals developing problems or those already underway.

If you have asthma or emphysema, you’ve probably visited a respiratory therapist. Respiratory therapy also helps you regain your ability to breathe as you recover from a heart attack or stroke.

An occupational therapist (OT) teaches injured or disabled patients to use common movements throughout the day to get better sooner.

A physical therapist (PT) helps patients recover from illnesses or injuries using special equipment to work your muscles and build strength.

A radiologic technologist (RT) dresses you in that cute little gown—you know, the one with the open back—so he can take x-rays or scans without interference from zippers and other closures. Radiologic

techs are not to be confused with radiologists, which are medical doctors trained to read those images.

That’s why you see two different charges for x-rays and scans on your insurance statement.

There’s also a new kid on the block: the medical assistant (MA).

Back in the day, a nurse in a starched uniform and jaunty cap performed the job, but MAs are not nurses. They’re trained to do administrative tasks such as measuring and entering blood pressure, temperature and symptoms into your chart before the doctor comes in. Most MAs are certified and have had job-specific training.

You may have also been examined by a physician’s assistant (PA) or nurse practitioner (NP). Both practice under the supervision of a doctor.

They often work in clinics, such as Marillac or in rural areas, but are becoming a familiar sight in doctors’ offices. NPs and Pas examine patients to diagnose problems and prescribe medication or therapy, but PAs have more training and may be working in a clinic while earning their medical degrees. Both are highly qualified. If problems arise that they can’t handle, a doctor is called upon to provide more specialized care.

With luck, your experience with any of the above will be limited, but it’s comforting to know they’re around to help you get the best health care you could ask for.

Enjoy the sound of music — It’s good for you!

usic is powerful. Not only is it an art form, but it is also a method of communication. It can transform our mood, take us back in time to a specific moment, or remind us of a certain person.

Throughout history, music has been present in most, if not all, cultures. This is not surprising because, in addition to sounding beautiful, it can also be good for us.

Both listening to and actively making music can benefit people of all ages, not just children and adolescents.

Music has been shown to help improve episodic memory (remembrances that can be explicitly stated, such as events and names).

For example, in one study adults over 65 years old were split into two groups and asked to memorize 42 words. One group had jazz music playing in the background and the other group sat in silence. After the groups learned these words, they were presented with the original 42 words as well as 42 new words.

In addition to benefiting memory, music is also good for general well-being and quality of life. One study showed that participation in weekly arts programs (such as music programs) resulted in better health, fewer doctor visits and increased positive responses on measures of mental health, to name a few.

Then they were asked whether they had seen the word before and if music had been playing in the background when they saw it. Results showed that participants in the group that had listened to music performed better on the task than those who had not listened to music. Researchers suggested that the music may have helped the memory encoding process become more efficient.

In addition to benefiting memory, music is also good for general well-being and quality of life. One study showed that participation in weekly arts programs (such as music programs) resulted in better health, fewer doctor visits and increased positive responses on measures of

mental health, to name a few.

Multiple studies also have found that actively participating in music produces feelings of pleasure and enjoyment, and the challenge of learning new musical skills creates a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Finally, music can also increase a person’s social interactions. Although music can be enjoyed alone (through headphones, singing in the car or shower, or dancing around the kitchen), it can also be a group activity.

Attending a concert can promote social interaction with your individual group as well as other attendees.

Many people also choose to participate in local orchestras, bands, or

choirs via church or other community groups.

Being a part of a group provides a sense of inclusion, promoting connections while working with others toward a shared goal. It requires paying attention to what is going on around you and how your part combines with others to create beautiful harmonies and soaring melodies.

Music is all around us. It entertains us and can help improve our functioning and well-being. We can connect with other people by making music with them or discovering and sharing artists and songs that we love.

Some music makes us want to cry and some music makes us want to dance.

So sing along or kick up your heels; just enjoy!

3 T melted butter 1 t vanilla extract 2 t brown sugar 1 t ground cinnamon 1/8 t ground allspice 1/8 t ground nutmeg 8 c popped popcorn 1 c dried apple chips, broken into large pieces 1/4 c toffee bits Heat oven to 300 F. Whisk melted butter with vanilla. Toss brown sugar with cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.

Toss popcorn with butter mixture. Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar mixture. Stir. Transfer to baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Sprinkle apple chips and toffee bits over top.

Bake 15 minutes, or until toffee bits start to melt.

Cool before serving.

8 c popped popcorn 4 whole graham crackers, finely chopped, divided 1 jar (7 1/2 ounces) marshmallow creme 1/4 c butter or margarine 2 T grated lime peel 1 T key lime juice Line 9-inch square pan with foil.

In large bowl, combine popcorn and all but 2 tablespoons graham cracker pieces In large glass bowl, microwave marshmallow creme and butter on high 1 minute. Stir until butter

is melted. Stir in lime peel and lime juice.

Pour marshmallow mixture over popcorn, mixing thoroughly.

Using damp hand, firmly press mixture into prepared pan. Sprinkle with reserved graham cracker pieces. Refrigerate 2 hours until firm.

Lift foil from pan. Break popcorn mixture into clusters.

Coconut-Popcorn Crunch Pie Yield: 12 servings

2 qt. popped popcorn, unsalted 1 can (4 oz.) flaked coconut, toasted 1 c sugar 1 c light corn syrup 1/2 c butter or margarine 1/4 c water 2 t salt 1 t vanilla 1 qt. vanilla, spumoni or butter pecan ice cream fresh fruit, for topping (optional) chocolate sauce, for topping (optional) In large, buttered bowl, mix popcorn and coconut. In saucepan, combine sugar, syrup, butter, water and salt. Bring to boil over low heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Continue cooking until syrup reaches hard crack stage (290-295 F).

Stir in vanilla. Pour syrup in fine stream over popcorn mixture; stir until particles are evenly coated with syrup.

1 c light corn syrup 1/2 c sugar 1/2 c brown sugar 1 c reduced-fat peanut butter 3/4 c raisins 8 c air-popped popcorn nonstick cooking spray In large saucepan, combine corn syrup, sugar, brown sugar and peanut butter.

Bring to boil over low heat, stirring constantly; boil 2-3 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat.

In large bowl, combine raisins and popcorn; pour hot mixture over popcorn and toss carefully with wooden spoons until well-coated.

Spray 9-by-13-inch baking dish with cooking spray; press popcorn mixture into pan and cool completely.

Cut into squares and serve.

Popcorn S’mores Yield: 20 pieces

1 c firmly packed light brown sugar 1/2 c (1 stick) butter or margarine 1/2 c corn syrup 1/2 t baking soda 10 c freshly popped popcorn 1 package (10 1/2 ounces) miniature marshmallows 2 c mini graham cookies 1 c chocolate chips In medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter and corn syrup.

Cook over high heat 5 minutes; remove from heat and stir in baking soda.

In large bowl, combine popcorn and marshmallows.

Pour sugar mixture over popcorn to coat.

Gently stir in graham cookies and chocolate chips.

Spread mixture evenly into greased 15-by-10inch pan.

Let cool completely. Break into pieces.

UCCS Aging Center to host free caregiver workshop For Life After 50 The UCCS Aging Center will host a free workshop to give caregivers essential resources and skills to help navigate the challenges of caring for an aging loved one. The workshop will be held Friday, October 26, from 1-4 p.m., at MacKenzie Place Senior Living, 1605 Elm Creek View (next to Nancy Lewis Park).

Attendees will hear presentations by caregiver experts, receive a comprehensive caregiver handbook, and have an opportunity to ask questions and connect with caregiving peers. Refreshments will be served, courtesy of MacKenzie Place, and an RSVP is required, as seating is limited. To reserve a spot, contact the UCCS Aging Center at 719-255-8002.

The Aging Center’s Aging Families and Caregiver Program offers counseling and education for distressed caregiver families and referrals for supportive community services. our Heavenly Father knows you!

He knows you intimately and wants to meet your every need. In Matthew 6:8b, Jesus said, “Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him.” Why, then, should we pray?

Prayer is not designed for us to inform the Father of our needs, for He already knows them. Prayer enables us to experience God more intimately.

As we express our needs to Him, we learn to communicate with Him. Moreover, as we communicate with Him, we will come to trust in His love for us.

As earthly parents, we sometimes anticipate the needs of our children before they ask. And, just as it gives us pleasure when our children come to us with their requests, it also gives our

Heavenly Father pleasure when we ask something of Him. In like manner, as our children express their needs to us, it gives us an opportunity to communicate our love to them. As they learn of our love for them, they will come to love and trust us in return. Love is the bedrock of a solid, lasting relationship with them. So, it is with our Lord!

The Father is eager to provide for us, and as we learn to trust in His unrelenting love for us, we will experience His love and provision. He longs for this kind of relationship with us if we will open our hearts and trust in Him. He is ready to show Himself strong on our behalf if we but ask.

EDITOR/from page 3 were a pillow. We were then without Max for a few years as we moved back and couldn’t have him live with us.

After hearing he was outgrowing his home and not enjoying the company of other animals much at our friends’ house, we brought Max home. After not being in our townhome for five years, it was like he had never left.

And it was all too brief that we got to enjoy him being back with us.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had to deal with the loss of a pet. It made me think about all the cats that have been in/out of my life through the years. Way too many to remember. But I recall my first cat, a gray furry cat named Frisky. Right around that time we also had a black cat named China, a tabby named Tigger, a Siamese named Napoleon, a gray/white cat named Sasha, that survived getting trampled by a cow.

The cat kingdom quickly expanded and then came Josephine, a little seal point Siamese we named Karl Mecklenburg, a cross-eyed Siamese named Bernie, a black/ white-spotted furry cat we named Chubs. There were so many kittens at one point, that my siblings and I made little football jerseys for them and would line the cats up in football formations. There were a ton more cats from my childhood.

Then adulthood brought Tanqueray, a gray tabby that once skidded across the side of my head as I slept on the floor, leaving a lightning bolt-looking scratch. Later there was Han Solo, an ornery Siamese who loved playing with a stuffed teddy bear. Sadly, after he had apparently been hit by a car, I buried his toys with him. Later came adopted brothers Loco and Diesel. Then there was an orange tabby I named Steel, who used to prop himself up on my bed and meow in my ear to wake me up. He also used to fetch rolled up paper napkins I’d toss across the room. I had to move and couldn’t have cats. I had a friend come adopt him. I thought I’d be ok. As soon as my friend left, I exploded in tears. Later, came Frank, a hefty, furry guy who used to crowd me in bed.

Whether it’s cats or dogs, or snakes, lizards, pigs, chickens.

Animals become family. Things are not the same when you lose one. The love and comfort they bring are unmeasurable.

The great indoor/outdoor debate Dear Ms. Kitty, I’ve heard it’s better to keep cats indoors but they seem to be really happy outside. Isn’t it more natural to let a cat outside?

Recently someone told us she had heard a cat crying outside. After days of searching, she finally found the cat caught in a trap in her neighbor’s yard.

The neighbor was gone, either on vacation or moved. By the time the cat was rescued, she was starving and severely dehydrated. She survived, but it took lots of TLC to bring her back.

Cats are very small animals in a very big world. Any veterinary clinic can tell you how vulnerable cats are to cars, wildlife, birds of prey, dogs and especially inhumane humans. Left outside, they can be maimed or worse.

At the very least, they can be so terrified they develop a feline form of PTSD, far less capable of trusting humans, even kind ones.

The Wildlife Question

Cats are also hardwired to hunt.

Without that instinct, they would starve in the wild. Some say that cats are a huge threat to wildlife populations, especially birds.

Research shows that birds make up only 16 percent of an average feral cat diet. In fact, humans—with their cars, pollution and habitat destruction—are a greater threat to bird populations. Either way, birders and cat fans can agree that keeping cats indoors eliminates this issue.

Cats and Their Territory

Outside cats can threaten inside cats too. If an outdoor cat leaves his scent and threatens through windows, inside cats may feel the need to defend their space.

This can lead to misplaced aggression, where they take out their frustration on other cats in the home.

The threat of an outside cat can lead inside ones to mark, setting them up for potential abandonment.

Outside cats are hardwired to compete with other cats for territory, which can lead to fighting, especially if either cat is intact. This exposes them to life-threatening viruses and serious wounds.

Fighting can also make cats afraid of other cats. This can set them up to be less likely to have cat friends once they come inside.

Play with Your Cat

Without replacing what they love about being outside, cats can become bored and lethargic, leading to obesity and other illness.

The easiest solution is to play with your cat every day. Even 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference to your cat’s health. Just like you take your dog for daily walks, exercising your cats with toys satisfies that hunting instinct and strengthens your bond with them.

Some say their cat doesn’t like to play, but almost all cats will play with the right toy. Some cats like toys that fly through the air and some like floor toys. The best toys are those with you on the other end of them!

Take Your Cat for a Walk

If your cat is confident, you can train him to walk on a halter or walking jacket. However, cats are very sensitive to touch. Putting something unfamiliar on their necks or backs can make them feel like they’ve been caught by a predator.

Leash training is exactly that: something a cat has to be trained for.

Getting your cat gradually used to the feel of the halter before you even head outdoors is the first step. There are good techniques for leash training a cat and we offer one here.

Your body has a bone to pick with you about your diet For Life After 50 Most people know that when you look for a house, you want a place with “good bones.” In other words, if the structure of the home is in good shape, most people feel they can fix up the rest. If a home doesn’t have good bones, the rest of it doesn’t matter.

The same can be said of your body. If you don’t take care of your bones, the rest of your body will quickly fall into disrepair.

“Taking care of your bones doesn’t require a lot of maintenance, but that doesn’t mean it should be overlooked. Just a little moderate exercise and eating some of the right food and drinks is all that is required,” said Dr. Victor M. Romano, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon in Illionois and author of “Finding The Source: Maximizing Your Results – With and Without Orthopaedic Surgery.”

Vitamin D, for example, is important for the absorption of calcium and aids in improving muscle strength and balance, Romano said. A deficiency of Vitamin D can cause soft, thin, brittle bones. It’s also associated with depression, Parkinson’s disease and seizures. Moderate

weight training is always recommended to keep bones strong, even for senior citizens.

Romano recommended that instead of taking calcium pills, the best way to get calcium into the body is with a healthy diet. He suggests a few ways to add calcium to your diet to keep bones healthy: • Start the day with calcium-fortified orange juice.

• Cook cereals with skim milk or almond milk (instead of water) or add two tablespoons of nonfat dry milk.

• Spread low-fat cream cheese on bread or toast instead of butter or margarine.

• Add low-fat cheeses to sandwiches, salads and pizzas.

• Add sardines to salads or sandwiches.

• Include higher calcium greens, such as spinach, broccoli and kale, in your salad.

• Enjoy low-fat or fat-free yogurt with berries for dessert.

• Make smoothies with frozen fruit, fortified orange juice and low-fat or fat-free yogurt.

“Getting enough Vitamin D and calcium in the diet is well worth the effort,” Romano said.

One thing is clear to me. It takes a lot of forgiveness to keep living. We can do our best, but often times we don’t. We can’t keep everything that’s important at the forefront of our mind.

So we have to be able to forgive ourselves for forgetting, for being selfish, for being distracted.

- Rose (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) Dear Rose, You friend was referring to Fall Open Enrollment. Fall Open Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 each year. During this time, you can make changes to your health insurance coverage, including adding, dropping, or changing your Medicare coverage.

Even if you are happy with your current health and drug coverage, Fall Open Enrollment is the time to review what you have, compare it with other options, and make sure that your current coverage still meets your needs for the coming year.

You can make as many changes as you need to your Medicare coverage during Fall Open Enrollment. The changes you can make include: 1. Joining a new Medicare Advantage Plan 2. Joining a new Part D prescription drug plan 3. Switching from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan 4. The ornery old ladies snickered and laughed. Slapping their knees and grinning from ear to ear, all three happily yelled in unison, “Because we were at your birthday party yesterday!”
