More to a mouth than a smile

We’d like to make a bold statement and you may disagree with us. Your mouth, not your heart is the true center of your body. We get that the heart has symbolically held that place for most of human history, but let your mouth say its piece.

Our mouths are a huge part of our lives. Our tongue relishes the sweet crisp of an apple, the shocking tart of a lemon, the sharp pang of a jalapeno.

We build relationships with strangers with the food as a common excuse to congregate. We use this same tongue and teeth to produce the sounds of life.

the pain and injustice of life comes to settle over our lives like an ominous shadow. The communication that your mouth empowers builds bridges and tears apart nations.

In a way that most people don’t see, we can also attest to the fact that your whole health is centered in your mouth. As the main gateway into your body, the health of your mouth can determine which bacteria are fought back and which find a place to thrive. Poor oral hygiene weakens your whole immune system and causes system-wide inflammation. Also, diseases that take root elsewhere in your body often leave warning signs in your mouth. An experienced dentist is often the first to raise a red flag to investigate a health concern.

If you begin to lose your teeth, your entire health can quickly decline. Teeth help support your facial bone structure. Gaps in your smile can affect your ability to talk, eat, and maintain

your health. A study done by Rutgers University last year suggests correlation between missing teeth and malnutrition in older adults. Adults with 10-19 teeth are especially at risk for malnutrition. This malnutrition also showed connection with increased dementia, depression, and put the participants at increased risk for serious illnesses.

We don’t expect pop culture to embrace our conclusion; it’s hard to create song lyrics around your teeth. But, you should chew on this idea for a bit and let us know what you think.

One last thing to mention- we’ve changed our name! Don’t worry, we haven’t been bought out by a corporate office, we are the same great office you love.

We chose a new name to recognize and respect the valuable work of our whole team, which has grown in recent years. Our new name is Bri-

Pierce lives life beat by beat

C

hristine Pierce lives to play music.

The 60-year-old who celebrates her

birthday this month relishes her simple life

of working at a fast food joint; living in a quaint, downtown apartment and relying on public transpor-

tation. The soft-spoken Pierce enjoys relaxing, but she’ll rarely turn down a music gig.

Pierce plays in four, sometimes five, bands in the Colorado Springs area. Occasionally she’ll play a fill-in gig for a band in need as well. She’s played the drums for more than 45 years, taking up the instrument when she was 15 years old.

“I was influenced by Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich and Karen Carpenter,” Pierce said. “She was a great drummer and a great vocalist.”

A military brat, Pierce settled down in Colorado Springs in 1976 with her parents Emerson and Maria. Her father retired at Fort Carson back then.

Pierce is the only musician in her family.

“My dad didn’t really like it because he wanted me to get into business,” she said.

Pierce persisted, however, fueled by her love for old television shows the “The Lawrence Welk Show” and “The Partridge Family,” along with a love for funk music. She was also inspired by watching drummers perform live.

“I really enjoyed watching the percussion section when I was living in Frankfurt, Germany as a youth,” she mentioned. “When I came back to the states, I thought, ‘Yeah, I want to give this a go.’

After high school, I just kept going and going.”

She purchased her first drum set in 1980. That’s when she first started playing with bands. Pierce

estimates that she’s maybe played close to 400 shows since that time. She even managed to make a living drumming while touring with a band on and off for 14 years in the 80s and 90s.

“In the 80s and 90s, there were times when I was playing seven nights a week,” Pierce said.

These days, she keeps busy playing with classic rock/blues band Riverbottom, old school country act George Duncan and the Moonlighters, variety band The Risky Business Band and an all-original project – Sargents Sargent. Pierce usually rehearses three times a week. She often plays four to five gigs a month.

When she’s not playing drums or working, she’s usually just taking it easy. She does enjoy playing a little guitar. She took it up while living in Maysville, Missouri. Her favorite player is Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Pierce also enjoys “Star Trek.” She’s a self-proclaimed “Trekkie.”

he Dixie Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces” is blaring as you take the scenic route through southeast Colorado. Stopping along the Santa Fe Trail, you’ll imagine buffalo and plains Indians roaming this vast, stunning grassland.

La Junta, Lamar, Las Animas and other southeast Colorado towns greet you with a sense of relaxation and down-home roots. You can be sure to enjoy all the region has to offer — from birding to camping to hiking and rodeos, it’s time to get outside on the road less traveled.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER: WARBLERS, GROSBEAKS & MORE

With more than 400 species of birds, the Great Plains is a hot spot for ornithology enthusiasts. Start your birding-journey at John Martin Reservoir State Park near Hasty for a chance to see warblers, grosbeaks and vireos. The shoreline is one of the few nesting areas in Colorado for the threatened piping plover and the endangered interior least tern.

Nearby, Lake Hasty’s campground is home to bald eagles in the winter months.

Large flocks of snow geese call Nee Noshe Reservoir their nesting ground, and your best shot at seeing migratory waterfowl is at Upper and Lower Queens Reservoirs. Cottonwood Canyon has excellent scenery and is known for redheaded ladder-backed woodpeckers and red-eyed Mississippi kite. If you are looking for something accessible, the Lamar Community College Nature Trail is inside Lamar city limits and only 1.5 miles long. You might even catch a glimpse of easternplains birds such as the northern cardinal.

Dispersed camping is allowed almost everywhere in Comanche National Grassland, which covers a total of 695 square miles. The place is vast, so you will be able to find a pre-existing camp area that’s level to call your campsite. The Carrizo Picnic Area has permanent tables, grills and the benefit of wide-open skies.

Check out the American Indian rock art before jumping in the swimming hole. Picket Wire Corrals Interpretive Site consists of a large open field with parking for any size of RV. There is no water, but you can venture onto the Picket Wire Canyonlands trail. You’ll feel like you’re in an old Western at Picture Canyon Picnic Area — was that a tumbleweed passing by? — with tall walls of rocks stacked like a multicolored layer cake.

Fill up your water bottle and get a’stepping.

Carrizo Creek flows through a small canyon peppered with juniper and cottonwoods on the Carrizo Canyon Picnic Area hiking trail. Look for snapping turtles beneath the water’s surface and check out the petroglyphs that grace the walls. To step back even further in time, head over to the Withers Canyon Trailhead, an 11.3-mile round-trip hike to Picket Wire Canyon’s dinosaur tracks. The four Great Plains Reservoirs are ready for some splashin’: Nee Noshe Reservoir, Nee Gronda and Upper and Lower Queens, John Martin Reservoir is the second largest reservoir (by surface area) in the state.

Blue Lake, or Adobe Creek Reservoir, is a real looker, with shockingly blue water located 30 minutes from downtown Las Animas. Meanwhile, Lake Meredith’s size lends itself to power boaters and jet skiers.

If you are a true sailor, bring your sailboat to Lake Henry, as there is plenty of room to share the open water with other boats and water-skiers.

Dig your binoculars out of your backpack because you’re going to need them to see the wildlife this region has to offer. The calendar starts with the Las Animas Bent County Fair in mid-July, complete with peewee barrel racing and the tiny-tot sheep show. Then Crowley County Days, in Ordway, begins in

late-July, with a do-not-miss 4-H show happening before the rodeo and street-dance. Up next, the Baca County Fair and Rodeo, held the first weekend in August in Springfield, has red-neck games and a demolition derby. The La Junta Kid’s Rodeo has been happening for 50 years and continues in early August for students ages 5–18 participating in rodeo games — many world-famous professional rodeoers got their start here.

After seeing the adorable kiddos, head to the Sand and Sage Round-Up, in Lamar, also happening in early August celebrating 118 years of rodeoing. Rocky Ford’s Arkansas Valley Fair, in mid-August, is all about celebrating the quintessential summer fruit that is watermelon, but you can also enjoy the beer garden,

pie social and barrel racing. To round out your rodeo experiences, finish the season at the Kiowa County Fair, near Eads, in mid-September where bronc riding and live music end the season.

HISTORIC SITES, FORTS & CAMPS, OH MY

Famous frontiersmen, folk heroes and explorers are part of this region’s shared history. Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site in La Junta features a reconstructed 1840s adobe fur-trading post and living historians to recreate the scenes of years past.

Meanwhile, Boggsville Historic Site showcases a restored mid-19th-century settlement that was home to Kit Carson. On the darker side of history, the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site near Eads explores eight hours that changed the Great Plains

forever, and Camp Amache, a WWII-era Japanese internment camp near Granada, are two must-visits for the opportunity to learn from the past.

Back on the lighter side, the Koshare Museum in La Junta hosts an impressive collection of Native American artifacts and one of the world’s largest self-supported log ceilings. And Picketwire Center for the Performing and Visual Arts is a Works Progress Administration building, created using stones from local quarries, that has been bringing performing arts to La Junta for more than 60 years.

Romance and mysteries part of writer’s dream come true

Author Jennie Marts has published 24 books since 2012.

When author Jennie Marts only writes 2,500 words, she’s not pleased.

“That’s a sad day,” said the USA Today Bestselling author. She’s much happier when the daily count hits the 4,000-word mark.

Since 2012, she has published 24 books. Her first book took a year to write. “One year I wrote six books,” she said. “Last year I only wrote three.” Her drive is matched only by her enjoyment of pursuing her craft.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” she explained. “When I turned 40, my kids were getting ready to leave to go to college and my husband went back and got his masters. I’d always had a life goal of writing so I got a notebook and started writing a book.”

While Marts makes it sound easy, she is also quick to note the commitment and self-discipline involved.

Besides creating the content with characters, settings and dialogue, her time is spent keeping up her website and social media accounts, marketing, maintaining a newsletter for her 17,000 subscribers and attending book signings and conferences. But she’s not complaining: “I want this with my whole heart and soul.”

She is a self-described “hybrid author.” That is, she publishes independently and with a publisher. Of the former, she said, “I get to do all the fun stuff myself like the content, to the marketing, to the cover art.”

When working with her publisher, initially Entangled Books and Sourcebooks since 2018, she has greater time constraints and less overall control. Still, she appreciates having the ability for her books to be available through different options.

Marts said she has always enjoyed

reading and her favorite genres have been mysteries, women’s fiction and romance. It’s no surprise these are the areas where she’s found success.

“I love Janet Evanovich and she, on her website, said if you want to write romance find a Romance Writers of America chapter near you and join it. And there happened to be one in town. If you write romance you belong to RWA. I went to a meeting here in town and found my tribe,” she said.

Marts credits RWA and nationallyrecognized Pikes Peak Writers as playing roles in her success. At the 2013 PPW’s Conference she met Deb Werksman, editorial director for Sourcebooks, and pitched her proposal for a western-themed mystery romance. Marts said she and Werksman became friends but the story idea didn’t go anywhere – at least not then.

The indy-published “Another Saturday Night and I Ain’t Got No Body” was Marts first book. It’s been downloaded more than 100,000 times in at least six countries, she said. It’s part of her Page Turners series of which there are seven books.

The story Marts pitched at the PPWC, “Tucked Away” was later picked up by Entangled Publishing.

This was the first of her three-part Hearts of Montana series.

Her books are also sold as mass market paperbacks and are available at Walmart, many grocery stores and online. “Even though I met Deb all those years ago I had to learn a lot before I was ready to work with her,� Marts said. “I had to learn to be edited, I had to learn to take direction from an editor, I had to learn what galley proofs were, I had to learn my craft more. With ‘Caught Up in a Cowboy’ I was finally ready.�

Marts is a successful romance and mystery writer, but said romance novels get an undeserved bad rap.

“This is a woman-driven industry where women help and nurture each other, which is different from other genres. Romance novels are just stories about love. The story is always centered on a hero and heroine’s journey and it must have a happy ending,� she said. There’s also always a dog and a lot of humor.

What won’t be helpful is to go to the other extreme of expecting nothing of love and relationships. A zen master said, “Expect everything, expect nothing” (easy for him to say).

We may throw tantrums, we may cry as we let go of the dream of perfect love. But when we can rejoice over “good enough” in our love relationships, our growing up — no matter what age — will be happier.

Hold Your Horses! — What is equine therapy, what can it do for you?

By Katie L. Granier, B.A. It has been said that “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” That somewhat tired phrase may hint at why equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) can help adults of all ages—particularly older adults—improve physical and mental well-being.

While most people think of dogs or maybe cats when considering animal-based therapy, horses also are compassionate, four-legged friends known for their gentle support. Horses have evolved and survived by being “social mirrors,” reading their environment and reacting to cues, which helps people recognize their own emotions and become more in tune with their mind, body, and spirit.

According to Nancy Beers, founder of the Equine Approach in Colorado Springs, interacting with horses helps people become aware of the energy they are carrying and how it comes across in their interactions.

By learning to regulate emotions and be authentic in a nonthreatening environment, people are able to learn skills they can use in their other daily interactions.

EAAT is especially helpful for older adults, improving posture and stability, which can reduce the risk of falls and increase overall physical activity, thus improving health and wellness while creating memorable, positive experiences.

The option of individual or group sessions also promotes social engagement through both the human-animal bond with the horses as well as meeting and connecting with

EAAT is also beneficial for individuals with dementia and their caregivers, creating powerful bonding experiences that can improve partnership and decrease tension.

Individual services for caregivers also are offered to help alleviate stress and gain skills to manage emotions.

Family members of individuals with dementia have said their loved ones’ communication and behavior improved after EAAT, and that they personally benefited from the joy of seeing positive changes in their loved ones.

“Most financial experts caution against borrowing from your 401(k),” said Charisse Mackenzie, a financial advisor of Saturn Wealth in Gilbert, Arizona, “but they also concede that a loan may be a more appropriate alternative to an outright distribution, if the funds are absolutely needed.”

Mackenzie listed a few pros and cons of borrowing from a 401(k):

PROS

• No credit check. If a person has trouble getting credit, borrowing from a 401(k) becomes an option because it

requires no credit check.

• It’s more convenient. Usually less paperwork is required when borrowing from your 401(k) and you receive the money quicker than with a traditional loan.

• Better interest rate. “While the rate you pay depends upon the terms your 401(k) plan sets out, the rate is typically lower than the rate you will pay on personal loans or through a credit card,” Mackenzie said. “Plus, the interest you pay will be to yourself rather than to a finance company.”

CONS

• Opportunity cost. “One of the main drawbacks is the money you borrow will not benefit from the potentially higher returns of your 401(k) investments,” Mackenzie said.

“Additionally, many people who take loans also stop contributing. This means the further loss of potential earnings and any matching contributions.”

• Potential penalties and tax consequences. A 401(k) loan not paid is deemed a distribution, subject to income taxes and a 10 percent penalty tax if you are under the age of 59 ½.

• Less take-home pay. Most retirement plan loans are repaid as payroll deductions. “If you’re suffering financially and living paycheck to paycheck, a loan from your 401(k) doesn’t help you,” Mackenzie said. “If you’re squeezed further to pay monthly bills, a loan in fact could make your situation worse.”

• Red flags. “Borrowing from retirement savings to fund current expenditures could be a warning sign of overspending,” Mackenzie said.

“You may save money by paying off your high-interest credit card balances, but if they get run up again, you will have done yourself more harm.”

Mackenzie said much of the decision on whether to borrow from a 401(k) depends on the degree of financial difficulty people find themselves in. They should always try to consider alternatives first, because retirement savings are so vital.

Second only to my husband, I believe I was the last person on the planet to upgrade from an “idiot” flip phone and join the texting world. To this day, I remain a screen-time minimalist and still don’t have a Facebook account.

I’ve learned to laugh at the occasional ribbing from our daughter: “Well, you would know about that if you were on Facebook.”

I was challenged by an enthusiastic reader who was riding the Facebook fence to find out what boomers are saying about Facebook.

Of the dozens I surveyed, I heard everything from “I love it!” to “It’s a complete waste of time.”

Some see the benefit for businesses, reconnecting with friends, getting details on upcoming events or selling items on Facebook Marketplace. Others call it addictive, time-consuming, a privacy threat, gossipy and anti-social.

My brother, Dan, was the only male I found who used Facebook, averaging just five minutes a day. He isn’t afraid to block close friends whose primary posts are self-promoting or political banter.

“Overall, I think the world would be better without Facebook because for so many, it’s a destructive obsession or bullying arena,” he said.

“But I’ve found a way to use it to maintain more relationships.”

His wife, Linda, sees more people turning to Instagram because “there are more pictures, you can follow interest groups, and there aren’t the negative rants.”

Although she still finds Facebook helpful for organizing charitable events and class reunions, she’s skeptical about “liking” or “sharing” because of the speed it travels.

Cary Atwood said people often overshare with photos of their dogs or meals, or use Facebook for FOMO (fear of missing out).

My sister, Jenny, is not a Facebook fan. A phone call, note or personal email is her idea of truly connecting with people. “I don’t need pseudo friends,” she said.

She said people spend so much time looking at everyone else’s stuff that they lose the opportunity to be thoughtful and in the present.

So there you have it: a broad range of boomer Facebook feedback with one common thread—all said they could live without it.

“My grandfather thought phones would destroy the world,” said Jan Warren. “I wonder what he would think of Facebook.”

For Life After 50 “Aging for Beginners” is the topic of a free community lecture by Dr. Sharon Wahl on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., at the PILLAR Institute for Lifelong Learning.

The lecture is part of a series called “The New Normal: Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n Roll in Retirement,” cosponsored by the UCCS Aging Center, the PPACG Area Agency on Aging, and PILLAR. The series invites attendees to explore the reinvention of life after retirement.

“Aging for Beginners” will explore what to expect of our bodies, minds, emotions and growth as we realize that we are not 18 any more… or even 40. The presentation will review perceptions of becoming older and ideas/models of aging with application to participants’ own post-50 growth.

Dr. Wahl has a doctorate in education theory and practice from Nova University and a master’s of science in cardiovascular and neurological nursing from Oregon Health & Science University. She has spent 55 years as a practicing registered nurse, 25 years as a university nursing educator and is a published writer, editor and tutor. She has been the president of the board of the California Lung Association and Breathe California, taught gerontology courses at the master’s level at San Jose State University and was a case manager for older adult clients at a home health agency.

It’s no secret that Colorado Springs is also a wellspring for the senior arts. There are painting groups, sketching clubs, jewelry and pottery classes, senior acting groups, singing groups and all sorts of artistic endeavors that will help you develop talents you never knew you had! There are galleries in Manitou Springs that will showcase your art and help you sell your pieces.

Speaking of acting, my mother-inlaw became an extra in movies sometime in her 60’s. She’s been in more than a dozen major films and TV commercials! As an extra,

sometimes you have to stand around all day and you may not get picked, but at least you’re out and about, and you may get a free meal out of the deal!

being a grandparent is awesome! We have had the privilege of have a great granddaughter with us for a month

All of my grandparents have passed away but I remember all the happy days spent in their presence.

One of my grandfathers was a farmer in South Georgia, and he loved all of us kids, so one year he decided to save one of his fields for a baseball diamond.

We spend many Sunday afternoons in that field playing ball.

One of my grandmothers loved to pray, she was crippled so she was limited in her activities but she spent her time in praying for her nine children and her many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. I know there

over this summer and it is a summer neither of will ever forget. What a blessing!

This is also a time for grandparents to realize the role we have to play in the lives of our grandchildren.

A time to sow into their lives!

Our prayers and love can shape the destiny of their lives for generations to come. There is an urgency for us to join in prayer for the generations to come.

So, please join with us in celebrating our grandparents and as grandparents make a commitment to pray for grandchildren.

In addition, adults and children who eat at home more regularly are less likely to suffer from obesity, and increased family meals are associated with greater intake of fruits and vegetables.

RECIPES/from page 18 1 pound ground pork 1 pound ground veal 2 T extra-virgin olive oil 1 T fresh Italian parsley, chopped 1 T fresh oregano, chopped 2 T grapeseed oil 3 c basic tomato sauce In small saucepan over medium heat, sweat onion and garlic.

In large bowl, soak bread in water 1-2 minutes. Strain excess liquid.

In separate large bowl, add eggs, ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese and onion-garlic mixture. Combine then add ground meat, soaked bread, extra-virgin olive oil, parsley and oregano. Mix thoroughly.

Divide mixture evenly to form 10-12 meatballs and use hands to roll into shape.

In large saute pan over high heat, brown meatballs in grapeseed oil on all sides.

Place browned meatballs in separate saucepot with basic tomato sauce. Bring to simmer and finish cooking, about 1 hour.

Barbecue St. Louis Ribs

Barbecue Sauce: 2 c ketchup 2 c apple cider vinegar 1 c Dijon mustard 1 c brown sugar 2 T cayenne pepper 2 T kosher salt 1 T black pepper

Spice Rub: 1/2 c kosher salt 1/4 c ground mustard 1/4 c paprika 1/4 c black pepper 1/4 c cayenne pepper 1/4 c ground white pepper 1/4 c seafood seasoning 2 T ground cumin 4 full racks St. Louis-style ribs To make Barbecue Sauce: In

bowl, mix ketchup, vinegar, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, salt and black pepper. Transfer to thick-bottomed saucepot over medium-low heat. Allow sauce to warm and mix over heat 10-15 minutes, stirring continuously.

Remove and cool.

To make Spice Rub: In bowl, mix salt, ground mustard, paprika, black pepper, cayenne pepper, white pepper, seafood seasoning and cumin. Keep dry and covered until ready to use.

Remove silver skin from bottom side of ribs. Evenly rub each rack with 1/4 cup Spice Rub on top and bottom.

Wrap each in plastic wrap and keep overnight in refrigerator or cooler.

Heat smoker with pecan or other fruit wood to 165 F and maintain temperature. Remove plastic and place ribs in smoker 4 hours then check doneness. Ribs should be cooked but not falling off bone.

Remove ribs from smoker and glaze each rack with 1/2 cup Barbecue Sauce. Return to smoker 30-40 minutes. Remove and glaze again with 1/2 cup sauce for each rack and cook 20 minutes.

Remove ribs from smoker. Allow to rest 5 minutes then cut into single or double bone sections and serve.

Turkey Pot Pie

2 T butter 1 Spanish white onion, chopped 2 celery ribs, medium diced 3 carrots, small diced 3 c cooked, shredded turkey (dark meat preferred) 2 T fresh tarragon, chopped 2 T fresh parsley, chopped 4 T all-purpose flour 4 c turkey stock (or leftover gravy) 2 potatoes, peeled and medium diced 1 square prepared puff pastry

1 egg, beaten Heat oven to 375 F. In medium saucepot, melt butter; add onion and sweat 4 minutes. Add celery and carrots; cook 4-5 minutes.

Add turkey and cook 4 minutes.

Add tarragon, parsley and all-purpose

flour; cook 4 minutes. Add stock and bring to simmer. Add potatoes and simmer until fork tender.

Pour filling into pie pan and top with pastry. Brush pastry with egg.

Bake pie 20-30 minutes, or until crust is golden brown.

ften, when we think of heart conditions, we associate them with age. Although atrial fibrillation (AFib) is found more often in those over age 60, it can affect people of all ages, even children. Two million Americans are affected by this serious condition, which increases the risk of health complications, including heart attack and stroke.

What is AFib, and what causes it?

AFib makes the heart beat rapidly and irregularly. It commonly feels like a fluttering of the heart. According to the Mayo Clinic, “During atrial fibrillation, the heart’s two upper chambers (the atria) beat chaotically and irregularly—out of coordination with the two lower chambers (the ventricles) of the heart.”

AFib, also known as arrhythmia, is not deadly in and of itself but is nonetheless a serious condition. It increases the risk of heart failure or can be the result of a serious underlying health problem.

AFib can be genetic or may be caused by one of several heart-related diseases, previous heart surgery, sleep apnea, lung disease, infection, or an overactive thyroid. Caffeine, heavy alcohol use, street drugs, and certain medications can also cause AFib.

What are the symptoms, and how is it diagnosed?

The most common symptom of AFib is a fluttering heartbeat or palpitations. Other symptoms also sometimes accompany the condition, such as fatigue, dizziness, thumping in the chest, anxiety, shortness of breath, feeling faint or confused, sweating, chest pain or pressure.

You should treat it as a medical emergency in the event of chest pain or pressure. It could indicate a heart attack.

If you do experience symptoms, diagnosis is painless and relatively simple. Your doctor will perform a physical examination and an electrocardiogram. A patient-activated cardiac event recorder can also help with the diagnosis.

There are four types of AFib, although one form can progress into another.

Paroxysmal AFib is intermittent and can last for just a few seconds or up to a week. Symptoms may range from none to severe. Either way, this form of AFib goes away on its own within a week or less.

Persistent AFib doesn’t go away on its own. It lasts until it’s treated with either medication or electric shock. For those at high risk of stroke or if there’s another known cause of the AFib, physicians will treat the source of the irregular heartbeat as well.

Longstanding persistent AFib doesn’t respond to the above treatments. Several forms of minimally invasive catheter ablation are usually considered.

For this procedure, you’ll be given something to relax you and a local anesthetic to numb the groin or neck area where the catheter will be inserted.

Finally, permanent AFib occurs when longstanding persistent AFib is unresponsive to treatment. If treatment has been ineffective, your doctor might decide to discontinue the treatment.

This form of AFib is associated with an increased risk of heart attack and can also impact the quality of your life.

So whatever the form of AFib, take the condition seriously. If you experience symptoms, seek medical attention without delay.

The flight attendant watches her do this and asks to see her ticket.

The flight attendant then tells the blonde that she paid for economy class and that she will have to sit in the back.

The blonde replies, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to Toronto and I’m staying right here.”

The flight attendant goes into the cockpit and tells the pilot and the

copilot of the situation.

The copilot goes back to the blonde and tries to explain that because she only paid for economy she will have to leave and return to her seat.

The blonde replies, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to Toronto and I’m staying right here.”

The copilot tells the pilot that he should probably have the police waiting when they land.

The pilot says, “You say she is a blonde? I’ll handle this; I’m married to a blonde. I speak blonde.”

He goes back to the blonde and whispers in her ear, and she says, “Oh, I’m sorry.”

She gets up and goes back to her seat in economy.

The flight attendant and copilot are amazed and asked him what he said to make her move without any fuss.

“If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd will you give me a calf?”

The cowboy looked at the man then looked at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answered, “Sure, why not?”

The yuppie parked his car, whipped out his iPad, connected it to his cell phone, and surfed to a NASA page on the Internet, where he called up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location, which he then fed to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opened the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exported it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany.

Within seconds, the yuppie received an email on his iPhone. He then accessed a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, received a response. Finally, he printed out a full-color, 150-page report on his high-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer, turned to the cowboy and said, “You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.”

“That’s right,” said the cowboy.

“Well, I guess you can take one of my calves.”

He watched the young man select one of the animals and looked on with amusement as the young man stuffed it into the trunk of his car. Then the cowboy said to the young man, “Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?”

The young man thought about it for a second and replied, “Okay, why not?”

“You’re a Congressman for the U.S. Government.”

“Wow! That’s correct,” said the yuppie, “but how did you guess that?”

“No guessing required,” answered the cowboy. “You showed up here even though nobody called you, you want to get paid for an answer I already knew and a question I never asked. You used millions of dollars worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than me you are and you don’t know a thing about how working people make a living! Or about cows for that matter—this is a herd of sheep…now give me back my dog!”

Realtor backed by 30-plus years of experience

B

rent Demos, real estate broker and co-founder of The Platinum Group, isn’t cut out for a job that requires him to punch in and punch out.

That’s part of why he’s enjoyed his 31 years working as a realtor.

Demos was brought into the business by his mother Dot Demos, who worked as a realtor for 40 years. After attending Western State College and playing football there (he played defensive back), Demos jumped into the real estate business on a part-time basis at first.

“I came back and got my license,” he said. “It was a tough time to get into real estate, so I started a landscaping company.”

What started out as a smaller landscape and home improvement company quickly grew and expanded.

Demos eventually had to rent a larger warehouse space in downtown Colorado Springs to operate the business. He did landscaping in the summer and sold real estate in the winter. He then sold the landscaping business in 1998 and focused on real estate full-time.

“My mom was twice Colorado Springs’ Realtor of the Year,” he said.

“She was a great realtor, so that’s how I got involved.”

Demos went to work at the realtor group his mom was working at – The Patterson Group.

“It was a very elite company, and they only had 21 agents. They normally didn’t take new agents but they took me,” Demos said. “They showed me my ‘office.’ They pulled me into the maintenance room and said, ‘What do you think?” I said, ‘It looks great.” They put in a desk and a phone. They were really great people.”

“Everyone in our office has seven to eight years of experience,” Demos said. “They all know what they’re doing.”

Four years ago, Demos’ wife Kimber transitioned into real estate. She had worked the previous 20 years in the mortgage industry and in banking prior to that. Now the couple works together. It’s part of the freedom of the job Demos enjoys.

There are many benefits to having Kimber work alongside of him, Demos mentioned. She’s great at working with people and handling technology, something that’s not necessarily in Demos’ wheelhouse. He also thinks homebuyers prefer working with a couple.

“We do make a good team. When we go to listing appointments, it’s good to have both of us there. We have four eyes looking at each property,” Demos said. “People that list their homes like to have us as a team as opposed to one person. I think it makes them feel more comfortable.

Basically, they’re getting two realtors.”

Brent and Kimber attended Wasson High School, though Brent was a few years ahead of Kimber.

“He played football with my brother,” she said. “I always had my eye on him, but we didn’t start dating until later in life.”

A major change Demos has noticed in the real estate business is the number of people becoming realtors. There are more agents, but they’re not all knowledgeable on the workings of real estate according to Demos.

“We’re seeing these new agents come in and they don’t really know what they’re doing,” he said. “If we do a transaction with a new agent, it seems like we have to do their job for them. ‘Did you get the appraisal ordered? Why didn’t you send over the inspection yesterday? Oh, we forgot about it.’”

“A lot of people go into real estate thinking it’s quick, easy money, but they don’t realize how much work goes into being a realtor,” Kimber added. “Once you’re under contract, getting it to the closing table is where the real work begins.”

I Love My Pet

onna Kucera does not hold back when asked about her service dog, Whisper. He definitely loves being a lap dog and looks proudly toward the camera as she lists his many wonderful attributes. He’s ten years old, nine of which has been spent with Donna.

It’s obvious right away that Whisper does so much more than sit on her lap. Donna says that if she becomes confused and loses her way home, Whisper takes the lead and shows her the way back to her apartment at Senior Heritage Plaza.

Donna suffers from PTSD, has flashbacks and seizures.

Somehow Whisper senses that a seizure is imminent. Donna guesses he may see ‘spirits’ that indicate she will soon have a seizure. He then gently bumps into her with his head as a sign it’s coming. She quickly takes the appropriate meds and while the half hour passes for them to work, her loyal dog sits with her until she’s OK again.

These fine qualities are so important yet it is the emotional support she cherishes in her service animal. Whisper helps her to calm down to face the problems and challenges in life. Donna says, “But best of all, he makes me happy.”

Love hurts: Grief & Your Cat September is National Service Dog Month

Dear Ms Kitty, My heart hurts from my girl passing away. Do you have people I can talk to about that? I wonder about getting another cat but also feel guilty.

As millions of Americans savor the last days of summer with a hike, a trip over a long weekend, or time puttering in the garden, many will be accompanied by an assistant — who never gets a day off, and is only rewarded with treats.

Highly-trained at assessing their boss’ needs, these professionals are on the job 24/7. September is National Service Dog Month — dedicated to raising awareness, appreciation and support for these tireless workers who provide humans with physical and mental assistance, and precious independence.

National Guide Dog Month was created by actor and pet food entrepreneur Dick Van Patten, in 2008. A lifelong animal lover, Van Patten toured the Guide Dogs of the Desert facility, in Palm Springs, California. While there, he was blindfolded and escorted around the campus by a seeing-eye dog. Van Patten was inspired by the skills and hard work of both the dogs and their handlers.

He was surprised to learn that the cost of training a Guide Dog can be over $30,000—and the length of the schooling is about two years.

National Guide Dog Month was launched by Van Patten as a fundraiser to benefit the non-profit Guide Dog schools across the country, and to raise awareness of the Guide Dog community.

Now known as National Service Dog Month, the scope of this event has changed, too. What was then a one-time fundraiser has become a month-long celebration of Service Dogs, and the humans who support them— from puppy raisers and trainers, to veterinarians and behaviorists.

The list of chores these four-legged heroes perform has become increasingly impressive, and the training more complex. Service

Cat guardians often have their friends for almost a human generation, 15 to 20 years. They are there for us through many life changes. They watch us—and our children—grow and shift. They make many moves with us, doing their best to adapt to every new environment. They purr when we’re sad and get excited when we’re happy.

You may be feeling that loss acutely when it comes time for your nightly snuggles, or when it’s feeding time, or time you used to set aside to play.

Dr. Judith Lee, of Compassionate Care Veterinary Support, says finding a meaningful ritual can help. She says, “I find ceremony an important part of the mourning process. This is highly individualized.

“I like keeping a picture of the pet in a place that I will see several times a day. Sometimes I will look at it for long moments, other times I will place a finger of connection on it, and sometimes I will even speak to it out loud. Bring as many touchstones to this space as is helpful.

“Allowing the heartache is courageous, difficult, and healing. And allowing as much time as is needed is important. Four months after the loss of my young cat, I continue to feel the stab of loss and continue to visit the small altar erected as a testament to the love we shared.”

She also offers some thoughts about the best time to find another kitty. “An addition is never a replacement. The deceased pet’s love will always remain in our hearts.

Staying open to discovering the adopted cat’s personality is respectful to our previous companion, the adoptee, and ourselves.”

She will bless and dedicate the space for us and offer a celebration of life for your beloved pets who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

We will come together in love and community for a Planting Party at 9 a.m. the morning before, Sept. 7. The garden will be brought to life through a mix of plant donations and purchases over the next year. We envision this space as a relaxing refuge for contemplation, surrounded by trees, commemorative walls, and xeric plants and grasses.

Dogs still help visually or hearingimpaired owners maneuver their daily lives. Today, however, these incredible animals are regularly tasked with alerting a diabetic to a dangerous drop in blood sugar, recognizing and interrupting an anxiety attack or nightmare for a veteran suffering from PTSD, and reminding owners to take important prescriptions.

While many Service Dogs are still bred for their roles by accredited organizations that raise, train and place them, new paths to becoming a canine assistant are emerging.

Owners, usually with the aid of a professional, are teaching their own dogs how to help them.

Inmates in special programs at prisons are fostering and helping train animals with behavioral problems—often from high-kill facilities—to become Service Dogs.

Other animal rescue organizations are adopting dogs from shelters to be trained for the job. If chosen, these lucky dogs will be given a second chance— and live their new lives with an equally lucky human.

While they still don’t brush their teeth, can’t make us a cup of coffee, and won’t answer the phone—they are undoubtedly the most beloved workers around. As we celebrate National Service Dog Month, we honor our furry friends for all they do to make our lives better. Thanks, too, to the devoted human teams who help these animals become a success.

Fountain Valley Senior Center 5745 Southmoor Drive - 520-6470 FVSC Demand Rides The Fountain Valley Senior Center would like to implement a demand ride (same day rides) program. We have several days where our drivers have idle time; usually mid-mornings. What we would like to start to do is use this idle time for on-demand rides. These rides could be for going shopping at Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Walgreens or even to the park. We would need to keep these rides in the Fountain Valley area. Our transportation history shows; our idle times to be 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. What you need to do: • You would need to sign up for these demand rides in the Transportation office, we do ask for your patience because even though we have some Idle time to fill, if a medical appointment is involved this would have to take priority, this would be rare.

• We would also ask that if you are shopping to keep the bags to what you can carry.

• The rides would need to depart and return to the Senior Center.

• When shopping be ready at the pick times the driver tells you, Very important.

Note: this service might not always be available daily, in lieu of driver call offs.
