Cooper presented information and her own experiences at the Senior Resource Council’s Dine and Develop event, “Medicinal Marijuana and Aging” on Aug. 16 at the Southeast YMCA. She’s seen many of her geriatric patients experience the rewards of cannabis, not through only smoking it, but using oils and tinctures.

Ready for take off 2017 Pikes Peak Regional Air Show slated for Sept. 23-24

By Becky Hurley The roar of mighty WWII-era aircraft engines and the shriek of modern USAF F-16 Fighting Falcon jets will soon reverberate across Colorado Springs.

The Pikes Peak Regional Air Show returns to the skies over America’s mountain beginning at 8 am on Saturday, Sept. 23 and Sunday, Sept. 24.

Headliners both days will include the USAF Thunderbirds and more than 30 vintage aircraft including WWII era warbirds and aerobatic teams. The Thunderbirds’ appearance — always exciting – this year commemorates a special 70th anniversary: the US Air Force which was founded as a separate branch of the armed services on Sept. 10, 1947.

“We’ve got folks coming from everywhere – from California to New York City,” he says, adding that many are making the trip especially to see rare World War II aircraft.

The event’s Heritage Flight program includes the” White 33,” a restored P-38 and the A-10 Thunderbolt II (commonly known as the “Warthog”). Recovered from an aircraft graveyard in Papua, New Guinea, it was left behind after victory in WWII. Brought back to the United States, the historic aircraft was restored by WestPac Restorations of Colorado Springs.

Today, the White 33 is one of the few of its kind restored to flight status.

The A-10 was a workhorse singleengine aircraft used to support and protect ground troops, escort bombers, and attack WWII enemy aircraft and ground positions. The modern-day A-10 Thunderbolt II also played a key role in Vietnam missions.

Other highlights: a B-17 skydive – a first featuring the U. S. Air Force Academy parachute team and precision aerobatic teams like the Trojan Flyers and by staged “Dogfights” between Allied and Axis WWII

Aviation representative Steve Clark admits he has a big job. His focus is making sure the Air Show’s 300+ volunteers are trained to man 30 or more concession booths, handle security and set up for sponsor tents, exhibits and audience seating security, direct visitors, assist with Kids Zone activities and fuel, pilot or exhibit spectacular aircraft.

“Our goal is to make sure our customers have a memorable

experience,” he says.

Like Event Chairman and Westpac Restorations CEO, Bill Klaers, Clark shares a passion for WWII aircraft. He also credits Klaers’ military experience and connections for attracting Air Force and Army retiree volunteers as well as active duty officers and enlisted folks.

“Bill was also instrumental year in bringing on the Wings of Blue USAFA jump team,” he explains.

Shuttle service to the entrance will be offered from other lots, Clark says, adding that visitor transportation is provided this year with help from Silver Key and local school districts. Many of them are afraid to talk to people about using but they are also not happy with the side effects of their current treatments,” Cooper said. “I have an 85-year-old patient and she doesn’t take any prescription medications. She’s sharp as a tack.”

In her 45-minute presentation, Cooper outlined research she has found along with patients she has encountered who have not only improved the quality of their life through cannabis but were able to drop prescription meds. Among those were Alzheimer’s patients. “ I had a hospice patient, who’s grandson was taking care of her and he said, ‘She doesn’t remember any of our name until she takes this small dose of chocolate (cannabis) every day, and then she has about two good hours where she knows all of our names,’” Cooper said. “That was kind of an eye-opener for me.”

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem took mice and gave them low doses of THC, according to Cooper. Researchers found that mice that were given the low dose actually reversed their aging and performance.

“Twelve- to 18-month old mice reverted back to 2 year old mice,” she added.

Cannabis is proving effective in treating chronic pain, Cooper said.

The death rate from taking opioids has dropped 25 percent in states that have medical cannabis, she added.

“Side effects from taking a lot of drugs that patients feel they need to have a good quality of life doesn’t often let them have that quality of life,” Cooper said. “We want to be able to take away pain without taking away all that as well.”

Results are very similar when it comes to hospice/palliative care, according to Cooper. She had one patient who was taking a high dosage of OxyContin and slept 23 hours a day and had “no quality of life.”

“He started taking cannabis oil.

His wife said his pain was controlled better than it ever had been. He was awake. He was laughing and enjoying time with his family,” Cooper said.

“He got to spend the last three weeks of his life awake and spending time with his family. It didn’t stop him from dying, but it stopped him from dying before he died. It brought back quality of life. That is what matters to these people.”

benefits of cannabis and spent a year coming to terms with the new found knowledge that had been omitted from her years of medical education. Seeing how cannabis was working for so many different illnesses and symptoms in Colorado, from the very young to the elderly was a life changer for her and an advocate was born.

Tips for Healthy Eating as We Age For Life After 50 As one ages, metabolism and activity levels slow down, and there’s a need to consume less calories.

Within those calories it is very important to pick foods that are rich in the nutrients that aging bodies need to function at the optimal level.

Welcome to the soapbox, folks.

You may be shocked to find out that personal training does not have an educational standard and is self-regulated.

Certifications are available, and the most respected of them take 4-9 months of full time study, with a pass rate of around 58 percent.

Requirements to be a Personal Trainer: 18 years of age. They should also be CPR and first-aid certified.

That’s it. There is no requirement for formal education, legitimate licensure or continuing education.

The best organizations will offer continuing education, specialty certifications and informative publications for their participants.

Reputation is what distinguishes the good organizations from the shoddy ones, but there are no official standards in place.

Fitness clubs decide for themselves who will train their precious members. Some will allow “uncertified” trainers to work at their facility, or they may offer some sort of “quickie certification” to trainer wannabees.

These “quickie” certs cost the newbie about $200 and are easily obtained. Heck … I’ve even seen ads online for $79 certifications. Are we shocked? Maybe yes, maybe no.

So your trainer may have a master’s degree in biomechanics with five years of experience working at a clinical setting, or may have a quickie license with no experience whatsoever.

The role of a Personal Trainers is to design exercise programs and help clients execute them to maintain or improve their health. If your trainer does not have a designed program in place for you, ask for one.

Besides programming, Personal Trainers will motivate clients to a healthier lifestyle, help prevent injuries with proper form and follow through with the client’s physician or Physical Therapist’s advice. They will also screen clients’ movement patterns to make sure that they can move freely without pain or limitation.

Are you on the right road?

You may complain to your trainer about severe back pain, troubles with mobility, diabetes-related symptoms.

These issues blur the line between fitness and medicine.

By law, your trainer is required to at least suggest that you see a proper health practitioner. Problems like these are beyond a trainer’s expertise, and if he/she has your best interest in mind, a recommendation will be given.

Kevin Hyland PT has been practicing in Colorado Springs for over 20 years. He has a physical therapy degree and a National Certification in Athletic Training. He has worked with athletic teams on all levels.

He’s quick to point out the value of both PT and fitness training: “Research shows that physical therapy can get you moving better, aligned better and feeling better, but it is exercise that’s going to keep you there, and prevent you from re-injury.”

Dr. Hyland noticed a decrease in how many PT sessions insurances were willing to cover. He was concerned that he was sending his patients out without the strength they needed to perform activities of daily living.

For this reason, Dr. Hyland works in tandem with an outside trainer.

Working with a trainer allows him to co-monitor a patient who’s just been released from PT. That way, he can make training recommendations and keep informed of the patient’s progress.

“We get patients so that they’re functional again, but we want to take them beyond that … into higher goals and also the preventative stage. If they don’t continue to maintain and advance, they’re going to end up back in our clinic with another injury … somewhere else.”

“The people that are able to continue to exercise stay healthy.

We’re here if they get reinjured, but if we can prevent that from happening … that’s the whole goal.”

The bottom line

When in doubt, see a physical therapist. Don’t rely on your personal trainer to perform the work of a physical therapist. While PNF

ASSISTED LIVING & MEMORY SUPPORT stretching and foam rolling are well within the scope of practice for a Personal Trainer, manipulation and massage therapy are not.

If you experience significant pain during regular physical activity that others don’t seem to have, it may be time to address them with a physical therapist, then return to your personal trainer afterwards.

By the same token, physical therapists are not gods. They can be wrong, and I’ve gone to battle with a few of them regarding squat form, functional movements and strength training.

But … when the chips are down, your personal trainer should be mature enough to realize that the ultimate decision rests in the hands of the licensed health practitioner … and the client of course!

To greet you is Monte Montoya, a most gracious maitre d’ at the Penrose Senior Center’s Aug. 11 Fundraiser Dinner.

Happy 100th Birthday to Genevieve Hall

Genevieve E. Hall will celebrate her 100th birthday August 22, 2017.

She was born in Lucerne Kansas to Benjamin Floyd and Nina A. Erickson.

They lived in western Kansas until she was 8 years old when they moved to the Colorado Springs area.

She attended Columbia Elementary, North Junior High and Colorado Springs High school where she graduated in 1935. After high school, she worked several years as an operator for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph.

In 1938, she married George J. Hall. Genevieve worked many part time jobs but her main focus was on their two children. David B. Hall 1949 – 1967 and Jacquelyn E. 1952 – living. George worked and retired as a Colorado Springs Police Officer. His second career was with District 11 schools.

In 1980 their granddaughter Kimberly was born. They were both very involved in taking care of her.

Genevieve moved in at the Inn at the Garden Plaza in 2008 where she lived for 7 years. Moving to her new residence at The Bridge in 2016.

Palmer Alumni announces Hall of Fame members for 2017

For Life After 50

Every year, practically all colleges and high schools celebrate Homecoming. There are parades and football games and the like. Palmer High School, is a bit different in that their celebration also receives a Proclamation from City Hall. This is a nice presentation and basically, it means that the week of their Homecoming, is “proclaimed for the whole city” to know about.

Colorado Springs High School, later renamed to Gen. William J. Palmer in honor of the city’s founder, first held classes in 1875 - this was one year before statehood. Their first graduating class was 5 students – three girls and two boys. The first Alumni Association was formed in 1894 and was active for about 25 years.

The current association, named The CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association, began in 1984 (going strong for 32 years, now) has a hand in the Homecoming festivities, but mostly it is busy with the induction of the newest members of their Alumni Hall of Fame. The school has had 40,730 graduates and currently there are 109 graduates who are in that esteemed

group, with a few who were named as Honorary Members. Even though the Hall wasn’t started until 1985, for anyone to be inducted into a Hall of Fame, they are a small number compared to the overall graduate total. Folks can nominate any graduate Farris they deem worthy.

Nominations are received from January up to the end of May, each year. All nomination packages are thoroughly examined in the voting process. Those who are to be inducted, will be introduced at half time during the Homecoming Hunter football game the night before.

The inductees are first treated to the Homecoming football game, where they are introduced at half time.

They get to travel to the game in style, thanks to vehicles provided by the local Ford Model A Club. The following morning, beginning at 9:45 in the Eagle Wing at Palmer, there is a Complimentary Brunch put on by the Alumni Association. Next, things continue into the Auditorium for the

Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, at 10:45.

Immediately following, a few words are said and then the portraits of the newly inducted Hall of Fame members are unveiled.

Then, they are invited to ring the bell in the courtyard. This is something which up until very recently, was reserved for graduates, only.

Nowadays, incoming Freshmen are also given this opportunity.

Along with a portrait, nominees are requested to include five to seven words that best describes them and/or what they feel about themselves. For those who are inducted posthumously, the family is asked to do the same. This year, we have two new members. They are, in class order: • The late Samuel C. Hunter, Jr., Class of 1936 - businessman, community leader, documented original Tuskegee Airman. He’s the BBB A+ second Tuskegee Airman to be BBB inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Tours will be given of the Alumni Historical Rooms, when the ceremonies are concluded. Later Saturday evening, there is a get together, at the Olive Garden Restaurant, 513 N. Academy at 5 p.m.. It is all capped off with a reservation only, Hall of Famers Honoree Brunch on Sunday at the Colorado Springs Country Club, on Templeton Gap Road.

Stay Lean with Protein S hedding excess pounds doesn’t have to mean depriving yourself of your favorite foods, including red meat. A study from the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center shows that healthy, higher-protein diets including lean beef can be beneficial to not only weight loss, but also maintaining muscle mass and heart health.

The study is in line with ongoing research on the importance of lean protein for weight loss. To kick your healthy eating plan into high gear, try these tips: • Enjoy protein at every meal. One of the benefits of having protein in your meal is feeling more satisfied, which helps reduce mindless eating or snacking in between meals. Additionally, meals with high-quality protein help build muscle and reduce body fat.

• Choose lean protein options.

Picking lean protein options can be easier than you think. You can still enjoy a beef burger and save calories by choosing lean or extra-lean ground beef. Other smart meat case picks include top sirloin steak or sirloin tip, bottom round steak or roast, eye of round steak or roast, or top round steak or roast. Also make sure to choose colorful vegetables and fruits to round out your meal, like in this

recipe for Grilled Southwestern Steak and Colorful Vegetables.

• Dine out smart. Many people struggle with getting a balanced, protein-filled meal when dining out or grabbing food on-the-go. Look for words like “grilled,” “broiled” or “baked” when browsing the menu for lean proteins. Or add a lean protein to your entree salad, whether it’s for lunch or dinner. For snack time, consider beef jerky to get protein on-the-go.

Grilled Southwestern Steak and Colorful Vegetables

Total time: 25-35 minutes Servings: 6 1 beef top round steak, cut 1-inch thick (about 1 1/2 pounds) salt, to taste Marinade: 1/4 C fresh lime juice 1/4 C prepared mild salsa 1 tablespoon chopped garlic 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper Colorful Vegetables: 2 T olive oil 1 medium green or red bell pepper, cut into 1/4-inch strips

8 oz. button mushrooms, sliced 1/4-inch thick 2 C zucchini, sliced 1/4-inch thick 3/4 t ground cumin 1/2 t salt 1/4 t coarse ground black pepper 1 C finely chopped tomatoes 1/4 C chopped green onions In small bowl, combine marinade ingredients. Place beef steak and marinade in food-safe plastic bag; turn steak to coat. Close bag securely and marinate in refrigerator 6 hours, or as long as overnight, turning occasionally.

Remove steak from marinade; discard marinade. Place steak on grill over medium, ash-covered coals. For

medium-rare (145 F) doneness, grill covered, turning once, 12-14 minutes (on gas grill over medium heat, 16-19 minutes).

To prepare Colorful Vegetables: In large, nonstick skillet over mediumhigh heat, heat olive oil. Add bell pepper strips; cook and stir 1-2 minutes, or until crisp-tender. Add mushrooms, zucchini, cumin, salt and black pepper; cook and stir 3-4 minutes, or until crisp-tender. Add tomatoes and green onions; cook and stir 1 minute.

Carve steak into thin slices; season with salt, to taste. Serve with colorful vegetables.

The light turned yellow, just in front of a driver. He did the right thing and stopped at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating driver behind him was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection. Mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the

door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said, “I’m very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, giving the guy in front of you the finger and cursing him. I noticed the ‘What would Jesus do?’ bumper sticker, the ‘Choose Life’ license plate holder, the ‘Follow me to Sunday School’ bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so I naturally assumed you had stolen the car.”

What do the Extra Help Notices Mean?

Dear Marci, I’m enrolled in the federal Extra Help program. Will there be changes to my benefits in 2018? How will I know about them?

- Ava Huntington, WV Dear Ava, There are several changes that can happen for people with Extra Help, a federal program that helps pay Medicare prescription drug costs, before and during Fall Open Enrollment.

If a change is being made to your Extra Help coverage, you will be mailed a notice sometime in September, October, or November.

Look out for the colors and titles of these notices to find out if you need to take action to change or keep your Extra Help benefits.

If you receive an orange notice, you do not need to take action. This is the “Change in Extra Help Copayments” Notice, and you may receive it sometime in October. This notice explains if the Extra Help copays will change in 2018.

Copays usually change a small amount each year. Read this notice to learn how much you will pay for your covered drugs in 2018, and save it for your records.

If you receive a blue notice, you might need to take action. There are two kinds of blue notices, and they are both called Reassignment Notices.

is sent out in October to people whose Medicare Advantage (MA) plans or Part D drug plans are leaving the Medicare program.

If you receive this notice, it means that you will be reassigned to a new MA or Part D plan in 2018. If you want to choose your own plan, you will have to choose it by December 31, 2017.

If you do not take action, you will be automatically enrolled in a different plan that may or may not fit your prescription drug needs.

The second kind of blue Reassignment Notice is sent in October to people whose MA or Part D plan premiums have risen above the Extra Help benchmark (the maximum premium amount that Extra Help will cover).

If you receive this notice, it means you will be assigned to a new plan in 2018. If you want to choose your plan, you should do so before December 31, 2017. Otherwise, you will be automatically enrolled in a new plan.

If you receive a gray notice, you should be prepared to take action, because it means that you could be losing Extra Help or paying more in the coming year. The first kind of gray notice is a “Loss of Deemed Status” Notice. This notice is sent in September to people who will no longer qualify to get Extra Help in 2018.
