Happy Cats Haven strives to find felines forever homes

S

ara Ferguson grew up on a ranch as a youth, surrounded by a ton of barn cats. Unfortunately, Ferguson’s mother was allergic to cats, so Sara had to enjoy her feline friends outside.

“I grew up speaking cat, because I was around barn cats all the time,” she said. “I grew up observing their behavior.”

Ferguson was quick to go and adopt a cat when she moved out of the house at age 17. She’s always had cats be a part of her life since then. In 2007, she decided to get more active with her passion for cats and started fostering them. There was much more to come.

Ferguson and a few cat fanatics, who had worked together at another animal rescue, decided they wanted to focus on just cats. In 2011, Happy Cats Haven was born – a nonprofit rescue and adoption center for homeless cats and kittens.

“We had a donation of $15,000, and that’s what’s got us started,” Ferguson, the executive director, said. “We built from scratch. Our original goal was to adopt out a cat a day. We surpassed that within three or four years.”

Last year, Happy Cats found homes for 661 cats and rescued a total of 735. More importantly, according to Ferguson, 453 of those were spayed or neutered.

Outgrowing its former location on 21st street, Happy Cats started construction on a brand new facility in Manitou Springs in 2017. Community support and donations, along with a handful of grants, paved the way for a bigger and better facility.

The organization was able to move into the new digs at 327 Manitou Ave. a year ago in May. The newly-renovated facility accommodates 70 to 80 cats and kittens, offers larger storage space and expanded medical facilities and retail support. It’s not quite finished, but 25 cats are currently calling it home. More than 100 other cats the organization has rescued are being fostered.

“We’re here because of our Happy Cats family.

They have totally supported us,” Ferguson said. “It’s almost all individual donations.”

Prior working with cats full-time, Ferguson worked in a different field.

“I’m a recovering librarian,” she said. “I was a librarian at PPCC for about a decade. Then I got into the resale business and sold vintage clothes online. I still do from time to time.”

Then Ferguson took time out to help her husband Ray build their straw bale house from scratch.

“That was a lot of sweat equity … a lot of sweat

equity. That’s a lot of freedom there. When you own your home outright, you have the ability to pursue your passions,” she said. “Without Ray none of this would have happened. He’s our rock, our hero and our number one cat dude.”

“We see situations all the time where people have more cats than they can care for,” she said.

involved so we don’t become hoarders, we can enjoy our cat therapy anytime we want.”

COVID-19 has impacted a lot of things for Happy Cats Haven.

Currently, adoptions are by appointment only. Thankfully, the bigger building allows for safe, sociallydistant adoptions, according to Ferguson. There were also plans to have a small lounge area, where people could grab a cup of coffee.

That’s on hold for now.

The biggest impact, however, was the loss of volunteers for two months.

“That was really hard. We appreciated them before, and we really appreciate them now,” Ferguson said.

“It’s hard to run a nonprofit this size with just our staff. Everybody really pitched in and supported one another.

We’re all cross-trained, so everybody can do all sorts of different jobs.”

Happy Cats Haven staffs nine employees. Usually, there are 30 or 40 volunteers, according to Ferguson. A few are starting to come back and help, but the organization could always use more volunteers, she added.

Event planning also has taken a toll.

“Like every nonprofit, we’ve had to get creative and think about how we could do everything virtually,” Happy Cats Board President Laura Ettinger said. “We’re looking at doing events online. We have a great event team and they’re having a lot of fun with that. By September, we’ll be kicking off virtual events. We’re just trying to be innovative and creative about it and

still get our donors engaged.”

A few of the big fundraisers for the organization are the IndyGive campaign, which happens in September, and the Black Cat Ball, which is usually in October. Plans for the latter are still to be determined.

Happy Cats will host a National Pet Memorial Day service on Sept. 13.

“People can come and celebrate the lives of the cats they lost this past year,” Ferguson said. “They can bring plants for the Happy Cats garden.”

Around 20 to 30 percent of cats adopted are by seniors, according to Ferguson.

“People who are older have an appreciation for what these cats have been through,” she said. “Anytime a cat gets surrendered, it’s traumatic.

Even for the most outgoing, friendly cat when you take away their

environment and they have to start over, it’s devastating.”

The organization continues to provide its Ask Ms. Kitty helpline, where experienced cat behaviorists answer questions and offer advice (see page 35).

Happy Cats Haven is in need of a few key volunteers. A few are needed to help clean the facility for a few hours. The organization also needs adoption counselors to come in, get to know the kitties and match them up with families. If interested in lending a hand, call 719-362-4600.

“Our illness stays down because we’re so committed to cleaning. It doesn’t smell like cats,” Ferguson said. “(The cats) don’t like (the cat smell), we don’t like that and our visitors don’t like that.”

Ferguson’s love for felines is obvious and contagious, as she always has phone in hand to capture pictures and videos of her furry friends in the facility.

“Something about their energy and their grace and their wisdom sort of speaks to me. They’re constantly teaching all us what we need to do to take better care of them,” she said.

“They’re interesting little creatures.

They aren’t as hard-wired to please us as dogs are. One of the examples is, take a collar and leash and put it on both, cats would just go crazy. Cats are very tranquil.”

COVID-19 and airborne aerosols: What you need to know

The virus that causes COVID-19 may be more infectious than previously known through airborne aerosols, spurring an international group of 239 scientists to call this week for new warnings from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The scientists are concerned that people who are spending time in poorly ventilated indoor spaces like bars, restaurants, churches, salons, classrooms and crowded modes of public transit may not understand how important it is for them to wear masks so they can prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

The group of experts includes Jose-Luis Jimenez, a University of Colorado Boulder expert on aerosols, atmospheric chemistry and air quality.

Jimenez has been working with the group that this week published their paper, “It is Time to Address Airborne Transmission of COVID-19” in the

journal, Clinical Infectious Diseases.

“The one thing we would like the world to do is to take this seriously, but not to be frightened. We need to explain what is going on. This is not like measles (which is highly transmissible in airborne particles) but, it can go through the air. And that’s why we need to do things like wear masks,” Jimenez said.

The warning from Jimenez and his fellow scientists already has generated action. WHO leaders now have pledged to review their guidance on

airborne transmission, a move that Jimenez praised.

“We are glad that WHO is moving towards acknowledging the accumulating evidence and may add aerosol transmission indoors to the likely modes of transmission,” Jimenez said after WHO leaders responded to the scientists’ plea. “This would allow people around the world to better protect themselves and fight the pandemic.”

Jimenez and the other scientists have been urging health leaders to

recognize and more openly warn the public about airborne spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.

“There is significant potential for inhalation exposure to viruses in microscopic respiratory aerosols (micro-droplets) at short to medium distances…and we are advocating for the use of preventive measures to mitigate this route of airborne transmission,” the scientists wrote.

“Studies…have demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt that viruses are released during exhalation, talking and coughing in micro-droplets small enough to remain aloft in the air and pose a risk of exposure at distances beyond 1 to 2 meters (or about 3 to 6.5 feet) from an infected individual,” the group said.

“Of course we need to do more research, but the evidence is overwhelming that this happens,” Jimenez said.

Earlier this summer, he also co-authored a paper about a superspreader event in which 53 members of the Skagit Valley Chorale in Mount Vernon, Wash. became sick. Jimenez said it’s clear that the choir member who was sick could not have personally coughed or propelled the

CH CARES Humanities Relief Grant Recipients announced For Life After 50 Colorado Humanities is happy to announce the organizations and individuals who were awarded a total of $405,984 in CH CARES Humanities Relief Grants.

Grant funds were provided by Colorado Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act economic stabilization plan of 2020.

More than 200 organizations and individuals submitted a grant application. The high quality of applications submitted to Colorado Humanities and the large number of applications received made the choices difficult. Colorado Humanities commends all the applicants for the important work they are doing.

Pikes Peak region organizations that received grants include Manitou Springs Historical Society ($10,460), Rock Ledge Ranch ($6,000) and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs ($6,000).

Colorado Humanities is the only Colorado organization exclusively dedicated to supporting humanities education for adults and children statewide. • Inexpensive changes can accomplish a great deal.

• If needed, upgrade heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) filters to what are known as MERV 13 filters in for places like commercial buildings and classrooms.

• Avoid indoor bars, restaurants, salons and churches that are not well ventilated or do not have air filtration systems. Instead go to places where service is offered outdoors.

• If you are outside, you don’t need a mask if you are not in close contact with people outside of your family, for example on an isolated mountain trail. But, if you are in closer proximity with people on a city street, you might want to wear masks.

Imagine that the people you cross are smoking cigarettes. You don’t want to inhale or smell the smoke they exhale without a mask.

• In general, being outdoors is much safer than spending time indoors since there is almost always air flow and UV sunlight during the day destroys the virus quickly.

• Follow the advice of Japanese health authorities, which can be boiled down to the three Cs: avoid closed and poorly ventilated spaces, crowds and close contact.

“People are very confused and may not understand why masks are necessary,” Jimenez said.

“It also seems that there is a great deal of resistance to the word, ‘airborne’ because medical people think immediately of airborne measles.

“This is not like measles. It’s much less transmissible than measles (which can infect for several hours after an infected person left the room,” Jimenez said.

“COVID-19 doesn’t seem to do that. It goes through the air, but it needs some help to build up sufficient viral load to infect, like poor ventilation,” Jimenez said.

He cautioned that the new information about airborne transmission does not mean that the virus has “suddenly become much more contagious.”

But, studies do confirm that much more consistent mask usage could dramatically cut infections.

“If you take the right measures and you maintain them, and you understand why these measures are needed, then you can be more successful in curbing the pandemic,” Jimenez said.

Overtraining — How much is too much?

t’s 6 a.m. in the health-happy Favre household. Mr. Favre and the dog have already been around the neighborhood for their usual 3-mile morning run. After everyone leaves, Mrs. Favre is ready for her jog. She grabs the leash, grabs the dog and takes off. In the middle of the day, she goes on another 2-mile walk/jog, dog in tow. When her 9-year-old football star son gets home, he grabs the leash and goes

This was their routine for nearly two years. As busy as they were, they still had time for fitness. But, as busy as they were, they didn’t notice how skinny their dog had become. One afternoon, the son grabbed the leash

and called the dog. The dog did not come. He called and called. The whole family was looking for the dog, who they found cowering underneath the

couch. The dog, it seemed, had had enough. For the next two weeks, the dog ran and hid every time he heard the jingle of the leash. He had

discovered new and inventive places to hide. Upon examination, the vet said he was entirely pooped out and a little hungry!

We don’t like to think that we’re abusing our bodies when we train. We like to think that we’re “pushing ourselves” or “challenging ourselves.”

The old adage, “No pain, no gain” still rules our hearts and minds. We think we’ve mastered our bodies; we’ve assumed control. We are certain that if we stop training, we will lose everything we’ve worked so hard for and just shrivel up and die.

Believe me when I say, I have dear, dear friends who believe this.

They cannot imagine taking one day off from “pushing themselves to the limit”. Even when they’re sick, they get up at 4:30 and go to extremes to stay fit. Some of them take it too far.

Those that overtrain are prone to injury, infection, pain and burnout.

And in my humble opinion, they aren’t running gleefully towards fitness; they are running away from death and disease.

Which one are you? One who trains joyfully towards fitness? Or one who trains because you’re in fear for your life? For most people, it’s a healthy balance of both.

Not everyone who pushes themselves overtrains. In fact, overtraining is a rare condition.

Overtraining does not mean training too much. The sports science definition is “A physiological state caused by an excess accumulation of physiological, psychological,

FITNESS/from page 12 emotional, environmental, and chemical stress that leads to a sustained decrease in physical and mental performance, and that requires a relatively long recovery period.”

Overtraining is much different than overtaxing.

How can you tell if you’re overtraining? It’s a fine line. If you do a workout that is too rigorous, you’ll stress the nervous system. In addition to the normal muscle soreness and fatigue, you may feel something similar to a hangover. You may lose focus and energy. A headache might trouble you for days.

Those symptoms may indicate a simple case of overdoing it. When you overdo it, chances are you’ve overloaded the hormonal system.

It’s likely you’ve elevated your cortisol, which causes inflammation and depletes testosterone. Both men and women need normal levels of testosterone.

Working out too hard has its risks. But overtraining is a different animal. If you’re the most rigorous athlete in the room, constantly sore and drained yet not seeing any noticeable results, you could be overtraining. Overtraining will kill your progress and replace it with muscle loss and apathy. It’s more of a mental state similar to burnout, depression, or illness.

Stress and overtraining

Overtraining Syndrome begins with the release of stress hormones (glucocorticoids like cortisol, for example) and an overexertion, or fatigue of the adrenal glands. If you already suffer from job stress, relationship difficulties, grief or chemical toxicity, you are at high risk for overtraining. With that said, a few no-gains workouts does not mean you’re over-

training. It means you’ve either got a hidden injury or you need to back off for a week. If you actually develop honest-to-goodness Overtraining Syndrome, it will take you months to recover ... not days or weeks.

Stimulus and overtraining

Most fitness junkies are actually addicted to the stimulus, using your muscles not so much for gains but for the emotions and sensations you experience during the workout. Stimulus addicts rarely lose motivation to train. Your enthusiasm will keep you reading up on the latest training techniques and being proud of what you’ve mastered. But take heed. If you pride yourself on working harder than everybody else you know, you may end up with a feeling of stagnation or failure when the physical results don’t come.

In fact, people around you who don’t hit it as hard as you may even seem to get better results!

Why? Because you’re forcing your body into cortisol overproduction, rendering your workouts at least 50 percent useless. Not that cortisol in and of itself is a bad thing, but too much of it reduces the amount of pregnenolone that you have available to produce testosterone. Hence, you may notice increasing flab and decreasing muscles despite your pounding away … and you may generally feel like crapola.

Hitting rock bottom

Overtraining manifests itself as the blues. No energy. No motivation. No joy. You get an anxious feeling when it’s time to go to the gym. You can

barely drive yourself there. You have to drag yourself onto the treadmill even though you’re dreading it. You can’t even imagine picking up a 5-pound dumbbell. The thought of it just about makes you get sick. And despite being the hardest worker you know, you keep hurting yourself. The gains are not happening. In fact, you’re getting weaker. The doctor can’t find anything wrong with you. Even though the condition is rare, you probably have Overtraining Syndrome. The Favre’s dog is a perfect example.

Not hitting rock bottom Most of you probably don’t have it. So for the rest of you whiners who are simply pushing yourselves too hard lately, take a few days off. It won’t kill you to rest. Don’t be a showoff. Humble yourself into submission and give your hormones a break. Then get back in the saddle whether you feel like it or not, and hit it hard!

It is a memory never to be forgotten; something that cannot be imagined.” So said Evening Telegraph reporter Bruce A. Gustin after accompanying Captain H. Eugene Honeywell on the Uncle Sam. Captain Honeywell was one of three balloon pilots who participated in the balloon race that began at Colorado College’s Washburn Field on Aug. 28, 1912. This was the first long distance race to be held at such high altitude. The Aero Club of America sponsored the race, hoping to boost the sport. Dr. Gerald Webb, Spencer Penrose and James F. Burns were among the judges selected for the event. Paul McCullough in the X of Akron, and John Watts in the Kansas City II, joined Honeywell in pursuit of the Antlers Cup. In the end, Watts won the award after travelling a distance of 42 miles. As for Bruce A. Gustin, the reporter pledged that if he were to receive a wage increase, he would surely take up ballooning to spend his days drifting among the clouds.

here’s a great saying, “How you do anything is how you do everything.”

In gardening, we get the gift of paying close attention to life. It’s subtle—the way plants grow, how a bud turns into a flower, into a fruit and then into seeds. We learn how to tell the difference between one leaf and another. We appreciate worms and cloudy days. As gardeners, we embody this idea of slowing down and taking care.

By July, our gardens are playgrounds. We are tending, harvesting and sowing seeds for continued bounty. So let’s talk about how we harvest. It might inspire us to cook up a special dish or make sun tea in a mason jar.

How to harvest basil Basil can be so productive! Or it can flower and turn bitter. The trick is in the harvest.

Instead of pinching off leaves when you’re ready to make a Caprese salad, cut basil at the main stem, right above new leaf shoots. This allows the plant to grow out more fully. As with all herbs and vegetables, especially the tender ones, the best time to harvest is in the morning while it’s still cool.

Keep your harvested basil in a vase of water, as if it were a bouquet of fresh flowers, and leave it on

the counter in your kitchen instead of in the fridge.

Now, you can pinch off leaves as needed. Storing basil in a vase this way will keep it fresher for much longer! Plus, you’ll have it ready at hand so you can garnish every summer meal if you so desire.

Cilantro In spring, cilantro grows slowly, but as soon as the weather warms, it quickly starts to flower.

Harvest by pinching off portions of the upper stem; the plant will fill out and grow more leaves.

Cilantro flowers are edible and tasty, too!

In hot weather, your cilantro will always want to flower. The best way to enjoy fresh cilantro all season long is to keep sowing seeds. Every three

Weeds give us insight into our gardens. Identifying weeds by soil type can help you determine what your soil might be lacking. Clover popping up across your lawn indicates a low level of nitrogen (clover is a nitrogen-fixer); compacted soils invite grasses, whose strong central taproots and wiry stems are really attempting to aerate heavy soil and build structure within it.

So before cursing the weeds in your garden, identify them, look at their roots and see what you can learn about the little ecosystem in your backyard.

Examine the pandemic’s effect on your financial life

ou’ve planted a victory garden, cleaned the garage and caught up with old (and even older) friends. If you’re lucky, you’ve stayed healthy and are still employed (or retired).

COVID-19 has affected each of us differently, but there’s no doubt it’s been a game changer for those of us at or near retirement.

You know how it’s impacted your social life; but what about your financial life?

I like to believe every problem comes packaged with its own solutions. Maybe it’s not a welcome solution, and maybe it doesn’t present itself as quickly as we’d like, but patience and precaution will pay dividends. By examining where we are and planning new steps to our goals, we can improve our chances of achieving the retirement we dreamed of so recently.

Ask for advice

If you have a financial planner, schedule a meeting in person or by video conference. If you’re on your own, it’s even more imperative to comb through your budget and long-term plan. Discuss these and any

potential long-lasting changes with your partner. If you’re single, share your thoughts with a friend who can give you honest feedback.

This pandemic could affect your priorities and monthly expenses for years to come. The goal is resiliency.

As the Stanford Center on Longevity warns, “No one promised it would be easy to live 20-30 years in retirement.

No one suggested you should just wing it.”

Depending on the shape of your long-term plan, you may need to increase cash reserves or cut spending.

You may want to stretch out your working years if possible or delay

collecting Social Security benefits for the 8 percent annual bonus. If you need to bridge the period between retiring and collecting benefits, consider “gap” measures such as a HELOC, liquidated life insurance or reverse mortgage. These are major decisions which are best reviewed with a financial advisor.

One silver lining of quarantine times is potentially lower costs for the short term. Many automobile insurance companies are rebating part of the premium since less driving has led to fewer accidents. Check with your insurer and ask for a refund if one is not offered.

Most of us refrained from dining out during spring and summer. The year’s travel plans moved to the back burner. Some of us forfeited travel purchases for which we’d already paid, but other costs were saved.

If you’ve been paying an annual travel insurance policy and now don’t have upcoming plans, read your policy. You may be able to obtain a refund by canceling.

Then, the next time you purchase travel insurance, check the policy for coverage in a pandemic! This coverage likely will only be possible with a “cancel for any reason” policy versus a “named peril” one. The pandemic is causing insurers to rewrite these types of policies to avoid liability, so ask questions and read the fine print.

This is my first pandemic, but I find myself reacting as I usually do in hard times: circle the wagons and hunker down. I look for ways to reduce expenses. I acknowledge my tendency over time to morph my “wants” into “needs.” Given that, I try to recognize that even as my aging results in more desire for creature comforts, my actual needs are relatively small.

Pioneers Museum re-opens to public For Life After 50 The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (CSPM) is pleased to announce it re-opened its doors to the public on July 9. Approved by the El Paso County Health Department, visitors can expect the following: • Staggered opening hours will allow time for comprehensive cleaning and disinfecting. The museum will open from 10 a.m.-noon, noon-2 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. The CSPM will welcome 50 visitors at the beginning of each time block.

• All visitors are encouraged to reserve free tickets online at cspm.org to promote physical distancing by limiting the number of visitors.

• 20 tickets will be available for walk-ins during each time block and given on a first come, first serve basis.

• The maximum number of visitors allowed in a group is 10.

Upon arrival: • Face coverings are required for all staff and visitors. If visitors arrive without a face covering, the CSPM will have a limited number available.

• All visitors will be asked to provide contact information to fulfill a requirement for contact tracing per the El Paso County Health Department.

This can be accomplished upon arrival or through the online reservation process.

• Staff will administer temperature checks and safety questions outside the museum for all visitors.

• Signs will be displayed throughout the museum indicating

traffic flow and encouraging physical distancing of 6 feet between groups.

We have avoided coronavirus thus far, but as holders of a high-deductible policy, we recognize that we may have higher future costs if we contract COVID-19. When we switch to Medicare, we will choose the best Medicare supplement available in our area.

Pandemic and investments

On the investment side, do your best to stick with your long-term plan.

Likely your plan does not call for selling low (whose corollary is buying high). If you are earning an income and still adding to your investments, use new funds to rebalance rather than selling existing funds for this purpose.

Investing is risky, whether you are currently staged in blue chips, spread out in mutual funds and ETFs, hunkered down in bonds and CDs or banking on real estate or some other fixed assets. The five years before and five years following retirement are the riskiest in your financial life. They are

the apex of investment risks: market, sequence, interest rate, longevity, inflation and health.

• Market risk is the risk that your investments go down in value. Beyond stocks, the housing market may be down just as you were planning to sell the family home to fund your retirement.

• Sequence risk is the risk you have to sell some assets in a down market, leaving you with a smaller base when the recovery comes. You may never catch back up.

• Interest rate risk means that when your CDs or bonds mature, you can only replace them with new ones paying considerably less interest.

• COVID adds to our ever-increasing health risk as we age.

• Perhaps the only risk that is lower is the risk of inflation. Your dollar buys about the same basket of goods now as it did a year ago, and may buy the same basket in a year.

It is not a happy time to be an investor, for sure. Nevertheless, it is the perfect time to be grateful for life, family, and friends. Together, we will declare victory over COVID-19.

Dressing: 1/4 c apple cider vinegar 2 T olive oil 1 T lemon juice 1 t honey

1 t Dijon mustard 1 1/2 c red quinoa, rinsed 2 1/2 c vegetable broth 1 t canola oil 1 white onion, sliced 3 c baby kale 1 red skinned apple, chopped 2 c cooked chicken, chopped 1/2 t salt 1/4 t pepper To make dressing: In bowl, whisk vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, honey and Dijon mustard until well combined. Set aside.

In saucepan, bring quinoa and

broth to boil. Simmer, covered, 12-15 minutes, or until broth has been absorbed. Cool completely.

In medium skillet, heat canola oil over medium-high heat. Saute onion 3-5 minutes, or until softened and translucent. Remove from heat; cool completely.

In large bowl, toss onion, kale, apple, chicken, salt and pepper with dressing. Stir in cooled quinoa.

My daughter and I went out to a local restaurant for dinner one night.

Shortly after we were seated, the hostess directed an elderly couple into the booth behind ours. The gentle-

man—who sat directly behind my daughter—broke wind rather loudly.

Age-Activated Attention-Deficit Disorder This is how it manifests: I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mailbox earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage

first ...

But then I think, since I’m going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my checkbook off the table, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Pepsi I’d been drinking.

I’m going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Pepsi aside so that I don’t accidentally knock it over.

The Pepsi is getting warm, and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the Pepsi, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye—they need water.

I put the Pepsi on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I’ve been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I’m going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote.

Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I’ll be looking for the remote but I won’t remember that it’s on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs.

But first I’ll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day: The car isn’t washed, The bills aren’t paid, There is a warm can of Pepsi sitting on the counter, The flowers don’t have enough water, There is still only one check in my check book, I can’t find the remote, I can’t find my glasses, And I don’t remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I’m really baffled because I know I was busy all day, and I’m really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem and I’ll try to get some help for it, but first I’ll check my e-mail.

Stay hydrated my friends

By Melissa Shandley Dear Ms. Kitty, My cat wants to drink from my kitchen faucet. I want her to get enough water but don’t want her in the sink and I don’t want to waste precious water. I have a dish with water but don’t see her drink from it very often.

Perplexed in Pueblo Dear Perplexed, You’re right to want to encourage your kitty to stay hydrated, especially as the summer heats up. Water is vital because it affects everything from organ function and nutrient transportation to circulation and digestion. It also helps decrease the likelihood of infections, urinary stones and helps the kidneys flush out toxins.

Cats evolved from desert dwellers, and therefore have a low thirst drive and would naturally get moisture from their fresh food. If you cat eats a dry food diet, she is most likely chronically dehydrated and should be encouraged to drink.

When cats lap water from a bowl, they curve their tongue into a J-shape and bite off a column of water, which is incredibly inefficient. Research has determined that cats only end up with 3/100 of a teaspoon per lap!

How to get your cat to drink water

Choose the Right Water Container: If your cat’s current water bowl is deep and narrow, it may touch her whiskers, which is uncomfortable.

Try switching your cat’s water bowl to a wider, shallower dish with a smaller lip to see if she drinks more. Some cats seem to like drinking from water glasses or mugs. If so, designate one for her and keep it full. Other cats like a raised container that allows them to drink standing upright. Experiment by providing multiple shapes of water containers and see what she uses. This

H is an easy way to give your cat choices and let her tell you what she prefers.

Place it in the Right Location: Although it is tempting to stick your cat’s food and water bowls in an out-of-the-way area, cats do not like being boxed into a corner. They prefer locations where they can see their surroundings with a quick glance and do not have to worry about anyone sneaking up behind them. See if moving her water bowl to a new location helps. They also prefer to have their water away from their food to avoid food particles fouling the water. Those double cat dishes are not a good idea.

Keep it Fresh: Put fresh water in her bowl one to two times a day. The bowl needs to be washed with soap and water daily to prevent a biofilm from forming. Biofilms are the nasty coating that can develop on the surface of the bowl and grow bacteria. Tap water may have chemicals that smell or taste bad to your cat. Consider providing filtered water.

Try a Cat Water Fountain: Cats love running water and there are many theories why. It may appeal to more of their senses, as they can see it move, hear the sound it makes and even taste a difference. A cat water fountain can make drinking water more exciting and pleasurable for your kitty. Some cats will drink when they hear moving water so if you do not have a cat fountain, put a bowl near the faucet in the kitchen or bath.

Add Wet Cat Food to Her Diet: Water is not the only way to keep your cat hydrated. If you feed a wet food diet, you are giving her fluid at each meal. You can add warm water or broths to her wet food to give her even more hydration.

is life is like something out of a binge-worthy series. Johnny Cash was the love child of an English Bulldog mother and a Standard Poodle father. He tried out a few families before he finally won the Dog Lottery and found the owner-ofa-lifetime.

This amazing and lovely woman passed away last month — and Johnny came to live with us. At 14 ½ years old, he still has his mother’s soulful eyes and patience. He has his father’s long legs, jaunty trot—and high maintenance coat. Our grooming routine with Chip and Ernie is relatively easy.

We brush their smooth coats; then brace ourselves for the nail trims with ear plugs and a shot of Irish whiskey. But Johnny’s coat is different. In a matter of weeks, his dark coat became thick and unruly, and the hair on his face grew bushy.

He did not look like the well-coiffured guy who would greet me at his owner’s door—and he was definitely not comfortable. I made an appointment with his groomer.

DeeAnne Jordan is the owner of Canine Cottage in Colorado Springs.

She has been grooming dogs since 1982, and has been doing Johnny’s hair for the past 10 years. She explained that some breeds — like poodles — have hair shafts that curl and kink in on themselves; and result in matting.

Due to the numerous nerve endings on the dog’s skin, this can become painful. Matting can, also, increase the risk of skin infections.
