Live rock ‘n’ roll through a lens

or rock ‘n’ roll photographer Larry Hulst it’s never been about the money.

Having shot photographs at concerts for more than 55 years, Hulst’s love for music has fueled his hobby.

“I’ve never been on the path to make some money. It’s always been having fun is the number one thing to do. I was interested in music all along,” he said. “The first band I saw was Simon and Garfunkel in 1964.”

After returning from serving in Vietnam in 1969, a 23-year-old Hulst wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to do with his life. He thought he might go to college. In the meantime, he started going to the Fillmore in San Francisco and took up photography as a way to go see concerts.

“I thought that if I brought some photographs of bands to concerts where those bands were playing that night, that I could sell them outside and use the money to purchase tickets

A pivotal meeting with Russ Solomon, the founder of Tower Records, was a key moment in Hulst’s photography career.

“He’s the person that put me on the path to where I am now. He owned all the Tower Records across the world. He was located in Sacramento, where we were based,” Hulst said.

“He said he had a plan to make like a little exhibition in front of his store and asked if I’d sell my photographs there. I ended up in front of his door for 18 years. We’d have 100 photographs on the sidewalk. I was stupid and thought I’d be cool by saying the records are $4, so the photos are only $3.”

Sitting in front of the record store is also where Hulst would hear about new bands. Back then, word of mouth or magazines was the only way to hear what bands were touring and where,

“I didn’t know that bands did tours. I didn’t know you could go find out where a band was. I was watching Jimi Hendrix play at the Golden Bear Raceway, and three weeks later he played in Berkley,” he said. “There was no communication. It was really hard back then. It was all word of mouth. Someone would come up and say, ‘There’s a really good band coming to town. This band called Genesis.’ Or, ‘The Clash are playing next week.’”

Hulst has 15,000 black and white negatives from shooting concerts all these years. His concert photography has graced the pages of Guitar Player, Rolling Stone, and Time magazines, several biographies, and numerous books. His image of Jimi Hendrix adorned the terminal walls of Los Angeles International Airport. At last count, Hulst’s photos are on 18 albums including ones by Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, The Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen and AC/DC. “I never wanted to go backstage. I wanted to be where the action is,” Hulst said. “After all, the ‘show’ is projected out onto the audience. I wanted to shoot from the audience perspective.”

While building his anthology of iconic rock imagery, Hulst honed his craft at less manic venues. For 27 years he worked as a U.S. government photographer. Hulst’s lens caught military activities by day and rock stars by night. His work covered the gamut of Defense Department activities at two Air Force bases, as well as the U.S. Air Force Academy.

He retired from civil service in 2010.

“Working at the Academy got me to get a lot more involved in digital photography. I went to my first digital photography class in 1994,” Hulst mentioned.

When asked what his top five favorite bands to shoot are, Hulst had a simple answer: “Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin,” he said. “I saw them seven times.”

The best place to see a concert is right up front, according to Hulst. The energy is much different that close, rather than the back of a venue. It’s a part of why he loves shooting concerts so much. And there are other reasons.

“When the artists connected with me. When the artists were looking at

It was much more exciting than watching football. I was excited that the band was playing to me versus the beautiful lady standing next to me that the band was actually looking at,” Hulst laughed.

Busby finds livelihood, joy in chainsaw art

Fire mitigation has led many homeowners to remove trees situated too close to a structure. This was the case for Kathy Thatcher and her husband in Cascade.

“We had two big old pine trees right outside our kitchen window. We hated to cut them down, but needed to for fire mitigation,” she said.

The Thatchers have lived in their house since 1985 and the trees had gotten to be “gigantic” she explained.

They had seen the work he did for a neighbor and decided to consult with Busby about their own yard. He provided an estimate, ideas and set a date to begin the work.

Thatcher said it took Busby four days to craft the two 8-foot pieces: one a realistic-looking bear, the other with a wolf face peeking out of a cave on one side and an owl on the other side. “They’re very cool,” she said.

“They’re about 10-feet away from the house. We have two windows we can see them really well out of.”

Busby hasn’t always been a sculptor, but his ability to create realistic or whimsical pieces from a tree stump grew from several things: an interest in chainsaw carving, his deep sense of faith and unemployment. He is now in demand fulfilling commissions from individuals, businesses and community organizations. He also participates in competitions and offers demonstrations.

“I always had a knack for art,” he said. He used to draw and make posters but never knew how to make money with it. After moving to

“I started playing around with it for a while and began making little bears.

That paid some bills, so I kept making ‘em. It was a progression for me. I was able to make my hobby my job.”

Although he has begun exploring other mediums, he said most of what he works with is pine and some cottonwood. He said it’s important to “go with the flow of the tree” since each variety has its own unique features.

“Usually people request some kind of Colorado wildlife. Nine times out of ten it’ll be bears, eagles, owls or wolves,” he added.

He has carved a dragon and a large ape, though, upon request, as well as school mascots. One of his favorite pieces is a clarinet-playing bear made for retired band teachers in Woodland Park. He described it as fun and different from his other work.

having artistic liberty helps me a lot, but a lot of people will also have something specific in mind” he said.

“Everything has to fit inside the tree.

The process is only about taking away, not adding to. I like to make it all one piece so it is more solid, durable.”

The carvings are sealed with Spar polyurethane, a marine quality product, to help ensure the life of the sculptures. Regular maintenance is necessary since wood expands and can split. Busby said he is able to do some repair work if needed. “This is something to enjoy for years to come,” he said, “so it does need to be cared for. The tree was beautiful on its own, so instead of just cutting it all down, this is a way to turn it into something beautiful again.

Rains of renewal

o say that we have gotten a lot of rain this year would be an understatement. I don’t know the official data but from my own 16 years

By Beryl Williams of experience living in Colorado Springs, this is some of the most consistent rain that I have ever seen.

I am amazed every day at how stunningly-green our area is because of all the rain we are getting.

Everyone I speak with is in agreement that the beauty we are seeing in our area, at this time of year, has not been seen in a very long time. And in this woman’s opinion, we are long overdue! Almost daily as I watch the afternoon storm clouds roll in, I breathe a sigh, knowing that it will cool down temperatures and continue to nurture and feed all of the beauty around me, keeping it green for another day.

As far back as I can remember, I have always loved the rain no matter how it displays itself. From a soft spring rain that soothes the soul and calms the mind, to a storm charged with so much sound and light that it sets all the senses aflame. And, no matter the intensity, it always takes me to the Lord. The soft spring rain causes me to feel His tender love for me in a soft caress. The mighty storm reminds of the awesome, powerful God that He is. Whatever its strength, the rain, just like everything else in nature, has a way of displaying various facets of His personality. And having the rain, that by itself, is evidence of our Lord’s love.

Zechariah 10:1 “It is the LORD who sends the thunderstorms. He gives showers of rain to all people, and plants of the field to everyone.”

So, while there are some that feel a little bah-humbug because of all this rain, let us focus on the renewal to the land that it is bringing to so many areas. Let us bask in the extended spring that we are being blessed with and be filled with joy, both in the nature around us, and, in Him. And with that spirit in mind, remember, some people feel the rain, others just get wet.

Ask the Expert: Vision health as you age

Many people tend to expect their eyesight to decline with age – perhaps requiring a stronger eyeglass prescription or “readers” to scan the daily paper. And while some changes to vision are linked to age, there are some steps we can all consider to help our eyes stay as healthy as possible.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 65. AMD causes damage to the macula, the small spot on the retina that enables people to see clearly and to view things straight ahead of them.

Common symptoms of AMD are distortion and blurring of the center of your field of vision. If caught in the early stage, there are potential benefits from taking certain prescription medications and nutritional supplements.

Research has found that certain factors like heredity, ultraviolet light exposure, and smoking may increase the risk of developing AMD.

Cataracts

The lens in your eye is like a db camera lens – it is clear and allows light to pass through to create an

image. A cataract is the clouding of this lens, blocking the flow of light to the back of your eye (retina), which ultimately causes loss of sight.

There are many kinds of cataracts, and most usually form slowly and do not cause pain. If the clouding is small, it is possible you may not even notice it.

The good news is cataracts are treatable via surgery that removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear plastic lens. Cataract surgery is generally safe and is one of the most common surgeries done in the United States. Once a cataract is removed, it cannot grow back

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is as important for your eye health as it is for your overall physical health.

Some of the best ways to protect your eyes as you age include: • Stop smoking. Smokers are up to four times more likely to develop AMD and may contribute to the development of cataracts.

• Maintain a healthy weight.

Conditions associated with being overweight, like diabetes and heart disease, increase your risk of developing vision loss from cataracts, glaucoma and retinopathy.

• Wear sunglasses. Help protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays (read on to learn why it is so important).

• Be physically active. A study found people who are physically active experienced less vision loss over 20 years compared to those who didn’t exercise.

• Eat a healthy diet. Colorful fruits and vegetables like leafy greens, tomatoes and blueberries, contain nutrients that can keep your eyes healthy and reduce the risk of AMD.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is caused by increased pressure inside the eye, which can cause permanent vision loss and blindness if left untreated. There are several types of glaucoma, but the most common form usually has no noticeable symptoms in the early stages – the only way to detect it is by visiting your eye care provider for routine testing.

Treatment may include prescription eye drops, oral medications, laser treatment surgery or a combination of any of these. It is important to find glaucoma early because once vision is lost, it cannot be regained.

As an obese person, you’ve already been working hard for every step you take. Which means your muscles are already surprisingly developed. In fact, bodybuilders go through what’s called a “Bulking Phaseâ€? before they get “shreddedâ€? for competition. The Bulking Phase isn’t glamorous. So for those of you who are overweight, you now can tell your friends that you have been in a “Bulking Phaseâ€? and are getting ready for phase two.

Not everyone wants to look like a bodybuilder. Don’t worry ‌ you won’t. Most competitive bodybuilders use anabolic steroids (and other drug cocktails) in massive amounts to achieve that look. But know this ‌ as you lose weight, you don’t have to be afraid that you won’t have any muscles at all. The muscles are there, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to carry yourself around. The larger you are, the more developed your muscles are likely to be.

After encountering some family tragedies over a four-year period including loss of loved ones, financial

distress, bankruptcy and many other challenges, he hit bottom. “I had not been taking care of myself. I was a daily cigar smoker and had put on a lot of weight. I did not exercise, I was growing old fast. The Peach Tree Road race was being held on the 4th. It is the biggest 10K race in the world. My brother said to me, “Next year we should commit to running in it.� I said, “I am in.� The goal had been set. This was my opportunity to work on me. That was it. It was my calling. As I am writing this, I have lost 40.4 pounds, more important, I feel and see the change. It has been a difficult task but very well worth it.�

If you are a large person in a “Bulking Phase� and you’re considering a journey back to healthy weight, here are a few things to keep

in mind: • By being large, you’ve developed a thicker skin, a tolerance for failure and a determination to keep moving no matter what. These are necessary traits for athletes. The journey will probably take you between two and seven years. Get ready for the long haul. • For every 5 pounds of muscle you gain, you burn 500 more calories per day. You will need to burn more calories than you consume each day. It takes a deficit of 3,500 calories to lose one pound. To do this safely, see a licensed nutritionist. • When losing weight it’s important not to focus on the success of others but only to measure your progress based solely on yourself. • The closer you get to your goal the harder it will be to lose the weight.

There will be times of plateau and even times of setback. • Finally, some words of wisdom from Craig Ballantyne: “The harsh reality is that most people do not want to see you succeed. People will try to hold you down. Find others who share your goals to lose weight, and so that you can leverage their knowledge, commitment, support and success.

So bottom line, don’t knock the big folk. They’re working out harder than most of their peers just by being big. With the right weight loss and exercise program, they have a better chance of maintaining attractive, healthy muscle development than the rest of us.

on.

The first surgeon said, “I like to see accountants on my operating table because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered.”

The second surgeon responded, “Yeah, but you should try electricians.

Everything inside them is color-coded.”

The third surgeon said, “I really think librarians are the best because everything inside them is in alphabetical order.”

The fourth surgeon chimed in.

“You know, I like construction workers. Those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over.”

It was Grandma and Grandpa’s 50th wedding anniversary, and all day

long the house had been buzzing with relatives and friends offering congratulations. The whole thing had tired out the guests of honor. Toward evening, Grandma and Grandpa were taking advantage of the quiet in the parlor.

“Martha,” said Grandpa reflectively, “I’m proud of you.”

“What’s that, Pa?” Martha asked.

“You know I can’t hear you without my hearing aid.”

“I said, ‘I’m proud of you.’”

“That’s all right,” she murmured.

I was at the gym recently when I suddenly realized that I needed to fart.

A song from the group KISS was playing really loud, so I timed my farts with the beat of the music. I grunted out five strong, loud ones back-to-back. After the song, I started to feel better.

As I sat up from the bench press I noticed that my fellow gym rats were staring me down with a look of disgust and disdain. That’s when I remembered I’d been listening to music on my iPhone.

A lady goes into a bar on a cruise ship and orders a Scotch with two drops of water. As the bartender gives her the drink she says, “I’m on this cruise to celebrate my 80th birthday and it’s today.”

The bartender says, “Well, since it’s your birthday, I’ll buy you a drink.

In fact, this one is on me.”

As the woman finishes her drink, the woman to her right says, “I would like to buy you a drink, too.”

The old woman says, “Thank you.

Bartender, I want a Scotch with two drops of water.”

“Coming up,” says the bartender.

As she finishes that drink, the man to her left says, “I would like to buy you one, too.”

The old woman thanks him and says, “Bartender, I want another Scotch with two drops of water.”

“Coming right up,” the bartender says.

As he gives her the drink, he says, “Ma’am, I’m dying of curiosity. Why the Scotch with only two drops of water?”

Giving cats options

By Melissa Shandley Dear Ms. Kitty, My three cats are sporadically getting into fights. They get along fine for weeks and then out of nowhere a fight breaks out. I don’t want to get rid of any of them and it doesn’t seem like there is one cat that is the instigator. The cats have all been adopted from rescues, are indoor only and have all their claws.

I am stressed by the cat fights and worried about them getting seriously injured.

Confused Dear Confused, Cats as a species are skilled at getting their needs met if they have lots of choices. When we move cats to an indoor-only setting, we reduce their risks but can also limit their options.

That can cause friction.

When cats get along part of the time but also have baffling conflicts, it is likely they are under stress. We may think it comes out of the blue, but we can recognize the signs of distress if we become good cat detectives.

Once you recognize the triggers that irritate you cat or cats you can address the situation before it escalates into conflicts. If you can’t identify a specific cause, you can still work on reducing the stress in your cats’ lives so they are less likely to be tipped into frustration, irritation, or aggression.

A trigger could be something outside, like prowling neighbor animals that are creating anxiety. Cats consider the area outside the house as part of their territory. If they see, hear or smell

invaders that they can’t chase off, they can turn on resident cats to release their frustration. The resident cat that gets attacked may fight back to defend himself and this cycle can break down the relationship.

When cats have abundant resources and multiple options in their lives, they are less reactive and can be more tolerant of annoyances.

Cats appreciate being able to have some control over their lives. When cats get to make decisions, it can help them feel calmer and more tolerant.

I encourage you to watch for subtle signs that there is something irritating your cats. Consider giving your cats more choices and their stress levels will lower.

Also don’t assume that your cat likes the choices you provide if you aren’t giving multiple options. For example, if you offer multiple types of litter, they will show you what they like. It may surprise you!

Touching: Cats can enjoy different types of touch at different times. Some cats enjoy being stroked 3 times but the 4th time feels uncomfortable. It is important to recognize your cats’ cues or to establish signals that will allow your cats to give their consent before being touched or picked up.

Fountain Valley Senior Center 5745 Southmoor Drive - 520-6470 FVSC Demand Rides The Fountain Valley Senior Center would like to implement a demand ride (same day rides) program. We have several days where our drivers have idle time; usually mid-mornings. What we would like to start to do is use this idle time for on-demand rides. These rides could be for going shopping at Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Walgreens or even to the park. We would need to keep these rides in the Fountain Valley area. Our transportation history shows; our idle times to be 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. What you need to do: • You would need to sign up for these demand rides in the Transportation office, we do ask for your patience because even though we have some Idle time to fill, if a medical appointment is involved this would have to take priority, this would be rare.

• We would also ask that if you are shopping to keep the bags to what you can carry.

• The rides would need to depart and return to the Senior Center.

• When shopping be ready at the pick times the driver tells you, Very important.

The Visiting Nurse Association performs foot care services including: toenail clipping/ trimming/filing, callous and corn buffing, foot care education, blood pressure checks, follow-up with physician as needed. Services are offered in the east building at 1616 W. Bijou St. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 385-7920 ext. 100. Cost is $45 for first visit, $35 thereafter.
