Silver Key moves to new location Silver Key Senior Services is settling in at its new home at 1605-1655 S. Murray Blvd.

As of Aug. 1, all services provided by Silver Key have officially moved from the buildings at 2250 Bott Ave. to the new location.

Those services include transportation, nutrition, durable medical equipment and case management assistance for seniors. Both the Golden Circle and Meals on Wheels nutrition programs, as well as emergency food assistance, are based at the new location.

The single exception is the Thrift Store, which has relocated to 1438 N. Hancock Ave., a few

doors down from the Colorado Springs Senior Center.

The Golden Circle Nutrition and Meals on Wheels program moved to the new site in September 2015 after the completion of a new commercial kitchen, and a new Golden Circle site has been established at 1655 S. Murray Blvd. Like most of the other sites, reservations are required by calling 884-2304 by 2 p.m. the day before dining.

Volunteer committees composed of more than 100 people throughout the city met for six weeks to determine what’s needed in each of those eight domains of a livable community. But the Age-Friendly Colorado Springs plan isn’t just a report. It’s an action plan with specific goals and specific steps to accomplish them.

Action on some of these goals has already begun. Other action items will take commitment and hard work over time.

Memorial’s new COO champions patients Every day for two weeks, a 15-year-old girl boarded a bus and took a bumpy ride to a medical center where her beloved grandfather, John O’Hara, was a patient.

In the early 1970s, though, visitors had to be 18 years old to go into the intensive care unit and the Gorby young girl was turned away. At the time, Cherie Gorby, Memorial’s new chief operating officer, did not know that she was experiencing a defining moment in her life – a moment that would shape every day that followed.

“Two weeks I tried to get in there, and I noticed that something happened every day at 3 o’clock. All the attention seemed to go to the core, and people left the nurses’ station, and I took it as my opportunity to see him,’’ Gorby said.

sob. Cherie began to cry, too. Seeing her grandfather connected to a nasal-gastric tube, a chest tube and a Foley catheter is still a vivid memory for her.

“Then his nurse came in, and she said she was going to call security and my grandfather didn’t want to have security called on me,’’ she said. “And, I said, ‘Can’t you just give us 10 minutes?’’’

Gorby did not have enough time to say good-bye before she left the room.

“I remember going out in that waiting room and saying, ‘I don’t know who these people are, or who makes these decisions, but I’m going to be a nurse some day and I’m not going to allow this to ever happen,’’ Gorby said.

On Christmas Eve, only a few days later, her grandfather died of cancer. He was 78.

Gorby has dedicated her life to patients, making their hospital or clinic experience one that is embraced with understanding, encouragement and compassion.

“The experience with my grandfather was long before the concept of patient and family centered care was developed, yet I knew I wanted something different for my grandfather and I. I knew care could be delivered differently, even at that young age,’’ Gorby said.

When she took the helm as COO of Memorial Hospital on May 2, it was a homecoming of sorts for Gorby.

She spent 20 years at Memorial, from 1986 to 2006. She began as a staff nurse, then became a charge nurse, an assistant clinical manager and director of maternal-child services. She was promoted to administrator of Patient Care Services and COO. In 2006, she left Memorial, moved to Grand Junction, and then returned to Colorado Springs to become COO at Colorado Springs Health Partners.

Many employees have greeted her with hugs and well wishes as she makes frequent rounds to acquaint herself with the new Memorial. When she left, for instance, construction on Memorial Hospital North and the East Tower at Memorial Hospital Central was still underway. And though she was not working for Memorial when the hospital became a part of UCHealth, she watched the develop-

“In my mind, this is the best partnership that we could have ever had, to have the influence of the university,’’ Gorby said. “I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Colorado, so I feel a kinship with the organization and so far, everybody seems very positive, upbeat and excited about the future. ’’ As COO, part of Gorby’s responsibilities will include oversight of the Master Facilities Plan, which includes expansion of services at Memorial Hospital North, continued renovation of patient rooms at Memorial Hospital Central, and strategic placement of primary care clinics throughout southern Colorado.

“It is wonderful to have a partner who believes in us. UCHealth has spent millions of dollars to help Memorial get to where we want to be,’’ she said.

“There are so many programs and improvements that we are embarking on.’’

Gorby said she is impressed that patients have access to their medical records online.

“Think about how important that really is for the continuity of care – to have everything that has happened to you inside your record, and it travels with you. And, to have the same philosophy across UCHealth for the way care is delivered, and the connections that we have between facilities and physician to physician has improved care for Colorado Springs,’’ she said.

With deep roots in Colorado Springs, Gorby knows how important Memorial Hospital is to southern Colorado.

We want physician satisfaction, a place that is easy to navigate for physicians. I’d love to have doctors say that this is the easiest place to navigate, my patients are well cared for and I have the tools that I need to do my job – I can do it here.

“Patient satisfaction is so important. We want Memorial to continue to be a place where people really feel cared for. Even though we are a large hospital, this is a community hospital, and people feel loved here. I want our patients to feel that they are really cared about,’’ Gorby said.

She said that doing the “little things’’ for patients makes all the difference. While she worked as a nurse in the ICU, a patient headed to Denver for a heart transplant asked if he could see his dog.

“Infection control told me no,’’ she said. “Well, I got the dog up there. I thought it was a Chihuahua – it was a Chow. I had this little bag to put the Chihuahua in, but it was this huge Chow. I got in trouble over that, but I was always pushing the envelope.’

“Patients and families need to be together. At the worst times of your life, you need your family and if your family is your dog, then you need your dog,’’ she said. “I want to be family-friendly and a place where we embrace your illness with you, and help you through the most difficult times.’’

That philosophy is not new for Cherie Gorby.

It’s wisdom that she gleaned at the age of 15 in the tormented quiet of a waiting room, outside the room of a man she still loves.

We’ll also have access to experts and other key resources to support us through all stages of implementing the plan.

Upon joining the Age-Friendly Communities initiative, we were given the designation Age-Friendly Colorado Springs. Now we have to earn it.

We’ll be held accountable for achieving our goals by undergoing a monitoring and evaluation process. After five years, we’ll determine what goals we have achieved and where we need to put in more effort.

I had the honor and privilege of chairing the Age-Friendly Colorado Springs Communication and Information Committee this spring, and I was amazed at how quickly the members of all eight committees focused upon and developed detailed goals for their domains.

Innovations in Aging brought all of our work together into a document that was submitted to AARP last month.

Now it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work.

At the Sept. 8 kickoff celebration, you can learn more about the things we’ll be doing to make Colorado Springs a place where people of all ages are valued, included and supported.

There’ll be performances, food, demonstrations, exhibitors and more, all of it free.

Trained case managers help seniors address temporary hardships, mental and physical challenges and financial matters, and assist them in connecting with health care benefits and federal and local resources.

The Guardianship Program provides case management and advocacy for people who have been deemed unable to make safe decisions for themselves by the El Paso County Probate Court.

Short-term case management helps seniors and their families navigate the aging process with assessments to identify and solve barriers to independence and safety.

In addition, Silver Key will be able to provide community common spaces, for which there was no room in the Bott building.

“The community space at our new location will give us more opportunities to address the issue of senior isolation,” Silver Key President and CEO Pat Ellis said.

Ellis and Orwig are excited about the possibilities the new site provides.

Silver Key is looking to expand its partnerships with other organizations such as the Colorado Springs Senior Center, YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region and Westside Cares to determine how more and better services can be provided to clients.

“We are taking a long, hard look at senior needs in the community,” Orwig said.

Although the site has been open since March, attendance has been sparse, since it has not been publicized, said Lorri Orwig, Silver Key’s chief development officer.

Renovation of the buildings and move were originally scheduled to take place over a three-year period.

But the sale of the Bott property moved up the timeline by a year.

For 45 years, Silver Key has been providing services that enable seniors to live independently with safety, dignity and respect.

The organization was founded by Betsey Myers-Burroughs, Clifford King and a group of citizens who wanted to improve the quality of life for residents of nursing homes.

It began in a one-room office, staffed by inaugural Executive Director Mikki Kraushaar in October 1971.

In those early days, volunteers were recruited to visit people living in care facilities to provide companionship and keep them from feeling lonely and isolated. Before long, Silver Key broadened its mission to include seniors who wanted to remain in their homes.

Silver Key occupied its location at 2250 Bott Ave. in 1978. The building underwent several renovations as the organization grew to become a primary resource for older people.

Since its founding, Silver Key has assisted more than 250,000 seniors in El Paso County. Today it serves more than 6,000 seniors annually.

State Fair a blast for kid in all of us

The annual Colorado State Fair revs up images of midway rides like the Tilt-A-Whirl and Ferris wheel – along with cotton candy, food vendors, 4H exhibits, prize livestock, rodeos, blue ribbon-winning quilts and baked goods. So many great traditions bring back memories.

And while the 2016 statewide event has kept those activities, it also offers plenty of new features for “kids” of all ages. General Manager Sarah Cummings guarantees the Fair’s 11 days are loaded with things to do.

Opening on Thursday, Aug. 25 and running through Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, highlights include free entertainment, nightly concerts, attractions, exhibits, livestock and food, food and more food (Anyone for a funnel cake or deep-fried pickle?).

There are also three parades: the

Colorado State Fair Parade on Saturday, Aug. 27, a Kids Day Parade on Saturday, Sept. 3 and the annual Fiesta Day Parade on Sunday, Sept. 4.

Fourteen nightly concerts begin with an appearance by country singer Travis Tritt on Aug. 26, include two Spanish-singing groups sponsored and end with a retro Huey Lewis and the News performance on Sunday, Sept. 4.

“This year we’re able to offer $2 discount each day for those 60 and older thanks to our sponsor, the Pueblo Chieftain,” she explains.

That’s in addition to the Fair’s official Senior Day on Thursday, September 1 when the gate admission is just $5.

And once you arrive, there’s plenty of free daily entertainment.

“We’ll have everything from daily “Dueling Pianos” and great cover bands performing hits from The Who, The Beatles, U2 and more in the American Furniture Warehouse Amphitheater,” she explains, adding that visitors should also check out the “Sea Lion Splash” and “Wild About Monkeys” attractions. Manitou museum tells story of Pikes Peak peanut pusher

By Jeanne Davant What started as a stunt to raise money for charity made Ulysses Baxter world famous in 1963.

On July 9 of that year, Baxter started a trip up the Barr Trail to the top of Pikes Peak. But he didn’t do it the usual way—on foot. Instead, he traveled the entire 13 miles of the trail on his hands and knees, pushing a peanut with a plastic spoon attached to his nose.

His feat is celebrated in an ongoing, featured exhibit at the Manitou Springs Heritage Center.

Baxter, then 21 years old, was the featured vocalist in a rockabilly show band called Carlos and the Rockets, out of Oklahoma City. The band was in the middle of a tour and was performing at the Air Force Academy.

The band’s manager had heard that someone once used his nose to push peanuts up the peak. (That would be Bill Williams, a Texan who did the feat in 1929 to win a $50 bet with a friend. Williams’ story is also told in the museum’s exhibit.)

The manager thought young Baxter should make another attempt, using only one peanut (Williams used

at least 150), and told him he’d be raising money for muscular dystrophy.

“I said, ‘you’re crazy,’” Baxter said in an interview with LIFE after 50 from his home in Oklahoma City.

“But I was just a kid, and I did what I was told to do.”

An offer from the Jerry Lewis telethon to auction off the peanut fell through, but word had gotten out about the attempt, and Baxter agreed to do it.

Before setting out on July 9, Baxter and the band performed a mini-concert at the Barr trailhead.

Then he changed from his performance tuxedo into fatigues.

Manitou Springs Mayor Earl Pitcock handed Baxter a fresh peanut, and off he went, pushing the peanut with a plastic coffee spoon taped to his nose.

The trip was eventful from the beginning.

“The spoon broke immediately,” Baxter said. “I just kept pushing it with my nose.”

It wasn’t long before the skin on Baxter’s nose was shredded and bloody.

That night, a severe storm moved in on the peak, and the band manager

tried to get him to come down from the mountain. Being young and stubborn, Baxter refused and weathered the storm in his sleeping bag.

When he set out again the next day, Baxter was given a larger spoon and head gear to hold it in place. The peanut was wrapped in tape to keep it from disintegrating.

Over the next few days, Baxter

got into a rhythm. Accompanied by a team to carry his sleeping bag and food, he would push the peanut during the day and mark its location in the evening.

Although he wore padding over his fatigues, the rocky trail ate right through his clothing and scraped the flesh from Baxter’s knees and elbows down to the cartilage.

Baxter reached the summit of Pikes Peak on the morning of July 17.

He was greeted by hundreds of people, including his bandmates, who serenaded him as he crawled the last 50 feet.

Tired and battered though he was, Baxter joined them for a few songs.

Upon his return to town, Mayor Pitcock made him ambassador of Manitou Springs, and Baxter’s fame spread far and wide as his feat was reported in the press.

Aftermath of an escapade

Baxter left Carlos and the Rockets after the climb but soon formed another group with a guitarist stationed at Fort Carson. His musical career took off, and he started getting booked for acting and modeling jobs.

He made an appearance March 11, 1964, on the “Steve Allen Playhouse,” pushing a peanut down Hollywood’s

Pikes Peak Feats and Fibs Ulysses Baxter’s story is part of an exhibit at the Manitou Springs Heritage Center that explores tests of courage and willpower and other stories related to Pikes Peak.

The exhibit includes a video of an episode of “Mysteries at the Museum,” first aired on the Travel Channel on May 22, 2015, that featured Baxter, as well as displays about the 100th anniversary of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and Fred Barr, the man behind the trail that bears his name.

Other exhibits tell the stories of the Mount Manitou and Red Mountain Inclines.

The Heritage Center, located at 517 Manitou Ave., Manitou Springs, is open from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week.

Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

The peanut pushed by Baxter to the top of Pikes Peak was found in storage at Manitou Springs City Hall, still wrapped in cellophane tape. It was about to be thrown out, but a museum volunteer retrieved it, and the museum’s archivist surgically removed the tape.

“It makes me feel good that people are still interested in the story,” Baxter said in a recent interview with KRCC. If Baxter’s feat is inspiring, his devotion to philanthropy over the past 20 years is even more so.

Baxter serves on the board of directors of Needs Foundation, a nonprofit that distributes leftover restaurant food to hungry people.

His current project is creating an

He went on to perform in Las Vegas, where he rubbed shoulders with the likes of George Burns and Dean Martin.

Baxter recorded several tunes with Rue Records, an independent label in Nevada, which appeared on rockabilly compilation albums. You can still find his recordings of “Mother, Congratulate Your Son,” “Beautiful Woman,” “Lavender Lace” and “I Won’t Tell a Soul I Love You” on Internet sites like YouTube and iTunes.

But the Pikes Peak peanut push cast a long shadow.

“I wanted to reach the peak of success of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra,” he said. “I wanted to be recognized for my talent, not for the fact that I crawled up Pikes Peak.”

Baxter quit the music business in 1980.

“I had a very religious family” that objected to the “devil’s music” they thought he was playing, and constant touring put a strain on his marriage.

With his mother growing older, Baxter decided to return to Oklahoma City to spend some time with her and ended up staying after she passed away.

Baxter, now 74, lives a comfortable life in Oklahoma City and has made peace with his peanut-pushing

By Doug McCormick Last month, I wrote about Zebulon Pike. In particular, I noted that he never got to the top of the peak named after him, and the difference between the Pike expedition and the Lewis and Clark expedition.

But what ultimately happened to Pike and where is he buried?

Some brief background from the expedition first. After wandering around close to Fairplay, Buena Vista, and Salida, the expedition crossed the Sangre de Cristo Mountains (almost freezing to death in the process).

They probably crossed near Medano Pass and went into the San Luis Valley.

(Not a good idea to cross those mountains in January without the right gear and clothing—the expedition had to split up and several nearly perished.) Near Alamosa, they built a small stockade and started to recover.

This is where the Spanish confronted them and then captured them. Pike and his men were then taken down into Mexico. Pike himself was ultimately released some months later at Natchi-

toches, Louisiana.

Pike resumed his Army career (somewhat under a cloud initially from his association with James Wilkinson, who tasked him with the expedition) and did well. During the War of 1812 he was promoted to Brigadier General and in April of 1813 led a small army to invade a fortress, called Fort York, at what is now Toronto, Canada.

While the assault was successful, Pike was killed when the British detonated the powder magazine. He was taken back to Sackets Harbor, NY and is buried today in the Sackets Harbor Military Cemetery.

No article nowadays can overlook the electronic storage of information. If you keep information on your computer or phone, it is essential that you can communicate the passwords to your representative in an orderly, meaningful way because, unlike paper in files, without passwords your representative can’t do anything.

Updating information

Once you have your safe place, you can’t forget about it. Things change.

Set a date annually to review the contents and make changes when major life events happen.

When you update your will, don’t leave the old one in the safe.

When you pay off a property, put the deed in the safe and pull out the mortgage information. It all sounds so obvious, but most people forget about updating their information.

The rest of the paper: Our paper goes far beyond essential paperwork. Much of it is the record of our lives and adventures.

If the person settling your estate is family, the contact list shouldn’t be too much of an issue, and you might elicit help from other family members in contacting everyone. If a friend is settling the estate, it might be necessary to have a list of family to be contacted.

While family notification might not be an issue, ensuring that friends and social organizations receive notification can be another matter.

Each of us has developed our own list of friends to be contacted in event of our death. An email may not be the ideal way to receive such information, but it serves the purpose and the grieving spouse, family member or friend may not have the emotional energy to call everyone on the list or write a personal note.

Getting a good night’s sleep is good medicine

don’t need as much sleep as we grow older,” Okun says. “People become accustomed to it, start to deal with it, and think that’s how they should be acting.”

Sleep stages and depth of sleep also change as we grow older.

“There is less deep or slow-wave sleep,” Okun says. “One of the main functions of deep sleep is to promote secretion of growth hormone, which is important to the repair of tissues. We think less deep sleep contributes to some illnesses we see in aging individuals and leads to increased mortality.”

By Jeanne Davant You know how a restless night of poor-quality sleep makes you feel the next day. You’re groggy and tired, depressed and irritable, and you might not be able to resist taking a nap in the afternoon.

If you nap too long, though, you may not be able to get to sleep for another night as the cycle repeats itself.

Older people are especially prone to sleep disturbances like this, says Dr. Michele Okun, director of Biobehavioral and Clinical Research at the Lane Center for Academic Health Sciences and president of the Colorado Sleep Society.

Sleep disturbances are more than just annoying, because a good night’s sleep is vital to your health.

“Certain chemicals are secreted only during sleep,” Okun says.

“Basically its purpose is to maintain health.”

The immune system works harder during the night, seeking out and destroying organisms or substances that cause disease. Sleep helps with physical restoration, such as tissue repair after exercise. In addition,

Some people have genetic predispositions that encourage poor sleep and less sleep, as well as sleep apnea, a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing stops periodically during sleep.

The most common form, obstructive sleep apnea, occurs when the throat muscles relax and narrow or block the airway. That can result in shallow breathing or even a complete stop that results in a lower level of oxygen in the blood.

Another type, central sleep apnea, occurs when the brain stops transmitting signals to the breathing muscles.

Sleep apnea occurs more frequently in older people, because the throat muscles become weaker and less elastic and collapse more easily.

Risk factors include obesity and a family history of apnea, use of alcohol and sedative medications, smoking and nasal congestion.

Getting better sleep

A number of medications are prescribed to promote sleep.

Hypnotic drugs like Ambien, Lunesta and Sonata “are specifically designed for sleep and are very efficacious in helping people fall asleep,” Okun says. “The disadvantages of those are that, in the morning, you feel groggy and you may have an increased chance of falls.”

Other medications commonly prescribed for sleep disturbance that accompanies other conditions are antidepressants, antihistamines, pain medications and antipsychotics.

Melatonin is a natural hormone that the body produces as an internal signal to go to sleep. Melatonin formulas are widely available over the counter but may not work very well.

“It hasn’t been studied very well,” Okun says. “We don’t know the correct dosing, and its efficacy is scattered and limited.”

You might be surprised to know that alcohol is the most commonly used sleep-promoting medication.

A shot before bedtime is a time-honored way to get to sleep, but consuming too much decreases REM sleep, one of the stages of sleep during which your eyes move rapidly and you dream.

If REM sleep is limited, “you can wake up feeling even more tired,” Okun says.

Okun says good sleep begins with good sleep hygiene: not having caffeine-containing drinks, eating or exercising late at night, and making sure the bedroom is dark and not too hot.

One especially popular event – the Silver Queen Pageant – actually takes place before the Fair opens on Aug. 12. Contestants are invited from senior communities throughout the area to enter and to showcase their talents and poise before the judges. The winner is announced on the Coke stage on Sept. 1.

Brookdale El Camino Executive Director Janella Sandoval says her community always shuttles a group of residents to the fair for visits, including Senior Day to support its Silver Queen pageant entrant. In case of extreme heat, trips may be delayed until evening.

“Our residents seem to especially enjoy the exhibit halls with the home baked good, quilts and dollhouses,” she says, adding that one woman in her community won a blue ribbon for her banana bread every year she entered.

They also enjoy some of the smaller entertainment groups and local entertainers appearing at the Fair’s easily accessed bandshell. Others like the rodeo.

“On Senior Day, we’re actually able to take our vehicles into the fairgrounds. On other days, we unload the gate,” she says, adding that those with limited mobility may rent wheelchairs at entry.

But the Silver Queen Pageant is also a big draw. “It’s a pretty big deal – sponsored by the Sangre De Cristo Hospice,” she explains. Brookdale’s residents and staff help select their representative — someone who’s comfortable in front of a crowd with a special talent. Local Mary Kay Cosmetics volunteers do make-up and the winner receives a tiara donated by a local jeweler. Last year’s a total of 16 contestants made their way to the stage.

Sandoval believes the State Fair tradition is valuable for many reasons.

“When you walk in, it’s always the same,” she says, recalling the nostalgic feelings, smells, rides, folks who work in the booths. And the food.

“I tried fried Snickers once.

They’re pretty good.”

Golden Circle Meal Sites The program provides nutritious meals in a congregate social setting to eligible diners.

You are eligible if you are: 60 years of age or older, married to someone who is 60+, disabled and residing in the facility where lunch is served or you volunteer at the lunch site. The suggested donation for eligible diners is $2.25 but no eligible person is denied lunch because of their inability to pay. The cost of the meal for ineligible diners is $6.50.
