More to a mouth than a smile People over 50 are living longer than ever thanks to advances in medicine and technology. Longer lives give us the opportunity to pass down legacies, traditions, and memories of good times as well as bad times gone by.

This gives us a chance to connect with the hearts and minds of the younger generations more than ever before. The over 50 crowd are living active, vibrant lives well into their golden years. Of course, with more folks living longer, and the knowledge well is not only deep but wide.

I find myself in that baby boomer generation that sees the sunsets with a more focused eye and appreciation of its makeup. As I contemplate, I realize how far and

how fast the profession of dentistry has evolved in just the last 10 to 20 years. In my years of practicing, I admit that in the not too distant past some of our attempts at modern dentistry seem rudimentary and crude, even though they achieved great results. However, those methods now seem a lifetime away. While my dental knowledge well might be deep, I am learning a whole new width of dentistry daily.

In the last decade I have concentrated most of my time on learning what I like to call “Star Trek Dentistry.” If you were to tour our clinic, you too might get the feeling that dentistry has warped at light-speed into an alternate universe. The technologies available to us now are highly sophisticated.

The days of crude and imprecise dentistry are swiftly disappearing in our rearview mirror.

Imaging technology has given us the ability to digitize the patient’s whole oral and facial structure. With these digital scans, dental procedures are much more accurate. Additionally, we are able to understand and diagnose a much wider range of health issues beyond just dentistry. Advances in radiographic imaging reduce radiation exposure to enhance and prolong lives. What

we are able to practice now is safer, better dentistry.

t may just be Colorado Springs’ best kept secret, but the Pikes Peak Trolley Museum and Restoration Shop, located at 2333 Steel Dr. just south of Fillmore near Interstate 25, is a must see for history buffs and railroad enthusiasts alike.

The museum, operated by the Pikes Peak Historical Street Railway Foundation, is open 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for active military and seniors and $3 for ages 3-11.

Marti Benson, director of outreach for the museum, moved to the neighborhood and discovered by chance. She took a tour and immediately became hooked on the history.

“I came down for a tour and never left,” she jokes. “I don’t come from a railroad background. Was a flight attendant.

Aviation was my first love. There’s so much history here. I was drawn to the volunteers, because I do a lot of genealogy for my

family. That led me to local history. I didn’t know this was Roswell, Colorado.”

The museum is located in what was once Roswell, Colorado. A rail town, Roswell was annexed into Colorado Springs in 1909, according to Benson. The museum is housed in what once was a roundhouse. Museum-goers can still see part of the original stone roundhouse on the north end of the building.

Founded on June 30, 1982, the foundation’s mission has been to preserve the history and artifacts of the Pikes Peak region’s street railways. The donation of CS&I Car #59 to the foundation, one of only six remaining Laclede cars, began the additional mission to restore to the streets of Colorado Springs and neighboring communities an electrified, full service rail transportation system using historic and vintage streetcars.

Subsequently, the Foundation was franchised by the city to operate such a system as the Colorado Springs & Interurban Railway.

Over the ensuing years, considerable effort has been expended by museum volunteers to preserve and maintain both the heritage and vintage trolleys as well as the 1888 Rock Island Railroad Roundhouse, valuable legacies of Colorado Springs history.

Regis Larouere, who’s been volunteering and giving tours at the museum for 19 years, has always considered himself a street car buff.

“I was born and raised in Pittsburgh,” he said. “I’ve been fascinated by trolleys all my life.”

Larouere and his wife fulfilled a 15-year dream to live in Colorado Springs and moved here 21 years ago.

“I came down (to the museum) in 2000. I knew about trolleys. All I needed to do was expand on that,” he said. “I do a lot of online research.

Learning things about the history of Colorado Springs has been a fantastic second career. One of my favorite expressions is when you do this, you have to have passion to stay with it.”

Volunteers like Larouere are vital to the mission of educating people about the history of street cars, Benson said.

“Every day I’m here, I say I attend ‘Regis University,’ because he has so

Outdoors

This geographically diverse region is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts, with dramatic peaks, expansive river valleys and untouched wilderness as far as the eye can see — plus fascinating history around every bend and scenic byway.

Steamboat Springs (Routt County) is well known for its Champagne Powder® and swanky ski resorts, but it’s also home to Howelsen Hill, the oldest operating ski area in North America. From the Ute Indians to today, adventure-worn travelers have long sought the healing waters of Glenwood Springs (Garfield County). Soak your bones in the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort, which boasts a spa and family-friendly lodge. Also in the area, Iron Mountain Hot Springs comprises 16 soaking pools dotting the banks of the Colorado River, while Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves features geothermal steam baths in subterranean chambers.

At Rifle Falls State Park, discover lush flora and a cascading triple waterfall — once the site of a hydroelectric power plant that made nearby Rifle (Garfield County) one of the first Colorado towns

with electric lights. A network of limestone caves sprawls beneath the falls, and you can retire to a drive-in or walk-in campsite after a full day of exploring.

Go way back in time at Dinosaur National Monument in Dinosaur (Moffat County), where thousands of fossils remain embedded in the rocks where dinosaurs once roamed. Millions of years later, this far northwestern corner of the state was home to the Fremont people, Ute and Shoshone tribes, and you can see numerous petroglyphs from this period throughout the park. Enter at Canyon Visitor Center to learn about activities, exhibits, campgrounds and more.

Plenty of wide-open space awaits adrenaline junkies in the Meeker area (Rio Blanco County).

The Wagon Wheel OHV Trail offers camping, hunting, fishing and plenty of off-road fun, with 250 miles of roads, trails and interconnecting loops in the East section. Off-highway vehicles are welcome on city streets in Meeker and on designated county roads as well. From Meeker, the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway rambles 82 miles to Yampa, offering access to both the Flat Tops Wilderness and White River National Forest, with exceptional scenery, solitude and wildlife viewing along the way.

The Tracks and Trails Museum in Oak Creek (Routt County) has indoor and outdoor displays that highlight the area’s coal mining, railroad and ranching history. The museum also has special projects on display, including a 1937 Fire Engine Structure and a restored schoolhouse from 1925, and hosts delightful holiday events and festivals throughout the year.

See another restored schoolhouse at the Historic Battlement Mesa School in Battlement Mesa and Parachute (Garfield County). The Grand Valley Historical Society has restored the circa-1897 school as well as the adjacent Glover Cabin, an example of an early 1900s pioneer ranch home. Also in Garfield County, Silt Historical Park in Silt encompasses an old sheepherder’s camp, blacksmith shop and other buildings filled with historic artifacts, where you can learn about local families through period-accurate stories and demos.

If you’ll be setting out on the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway, prepare for your journey at Crossan’s M&A Market Visitor Center in Yampa (Routt County). One of Yampa’s first general stores, Crossan’s has been a fixture on the corner of First and Main streets for more than a century and is currently being restored to accommodate Yampa Town Hall and a visitor center, with plans for curated exhibits.

AgeWell makes time for seniors’ medical needs

nder the visionary leadership and direction of Dr. Jeffrey Kulp, AgeWell Medical Associates, 2350 International Circle, strives to offer innovative patient-centered care to meet the increasing demand for primary care services in the Colorado Springs area.

The private clinic’s model for primary care for older adults is built on a team-based approach, according to Kulp.

More importantly, however, AgeWell prides itself on making time for its patients.

“I hear from our patients that they’re told by other providers that Medicare limits the encounter to 10-12 minutes and you get one complaint. If you have other complaints, you have to make another appointment,” Kulp said. “We take time with our patients. Older people move slower, respond slower and have more health conditions and it tends to take longer to see them. We allot whatever time is necessary to cover all the issues. I think that sets us apart.”

ground up in 2012. Meanwhile, Kulp, whose practiced medicine for nearly 40 years, has worked in Colorado Springs since 1990. He’s worked in private practice since 1997 and was formerly at, what was then, the Memorial Senior Health Center.

“My practice has been primary care for seniors the entire time I’ve

been in Colorado Springs,” he said. “It seemed a natural thing to focus on older adults. Now that I’ve been in it for 30 years, it’s definitely different than general internal medicine.”

AgeWell’s nurse practitioners are primary care providers and see their own patients. They can diagnose, develop a treatment plan, prescribe

medications, order tests and refer out to specialists when needed. Nurse practitioners work collaboratively with Kulp and consult him as needed.

AgeWell is currently recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH).

The PCMH concept equips primary care practices to do their part in achieving the “triple aim” of health care reform – better patient experience, population health and reduced costs.

“We’re attuned to seniors and their unique needs. I think we’re better equipped to serve the senior population,” Kulp added.

He said he hears from patients that other care providers often site getting older when patients express concern.

AgeWell goes well beyond that with its care, Kulp mentioned.

“We don’t attribute anything to advancing age. We like to look for an explanation for it,” he said. “Older people live independently and functioning at their highest potential as long as possible. Our patients want to continue living independently and be well and enjoy whatever it is they enjoy doing.”

Housed inside the AgeWell building are not only patient rooms, but a classroom as well. It’s been used for weight loss classes, team meetings, cannabis classes and chronic disease management classes, according to Practice Manager Lori Trivelli “That’s been a neat thing to have.

I’ve really liked having the classroom,” she said.

For Kulp, personally, he enjoys meeting seniors and hearing their stories.

“Everybody has a story. I think if we were in a hurry to see our patients, we would miss that part,” he said. “We would never really know anything about what they’ve done or where they’ve been. Our responsibility is to know about their health, but it’s also really important and valuable to know who these people have been in their lives and what they have accomplished.”

Local Tuskegee Airman to sign book at Palmer H.S.

H

istory. It is what shapes us, our country, our past. It shapes us, because it shows us how things were and how they changed. And things do change. It is the natural progression of time. But sometimes an extra nudge is needed.

Take erosion – if things are not changed, the eroding continues. Or social injustice – people have to step up and take a side and do things, in order to bring about change. There are some people who call others extraordinary, because they help change the status quo. Franklin J. Macon is such a person.

Frank struggled through dyslexia when he was young, in a time when that disorder, was really not identified.

He overcame his “problem” and learned how to fly and became one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. Now, that’s history!

Along his life travels, he was inducted into the CSHS/Palmer Alumni Hall of Fame in 2016. There are only a little more than 110 of those folks out of the more than 41,000 graduates from that school. Once again, history!

For those who are not aware, the “experiment” at Tuskegee was to train African American pilots. In the early part of the 20th century, segregation was rampant.

Many, regardless of their education or training, were only hired to hold menial jobs like porters, waiters, gardeners and the like. I’m sure many of you remember the 1960s and all of the civil unrest. It was people in that time, (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others) who helped reshape the nation’s thinking about people of color.

Twenty some years earlier, there were young volunteers enlisting in the U. S. military to serve their country and they were all colors. Many of them were in the 17- to 25 year-old range and many of those, never came home alive.

A huge reason why that “age” was and still is referred to as “the Greatest Generation”ever! Some of them who went to Tuskegee distinguished themselves as pilots and ended up shooting down the first jets used by the enemy. Imagine a prop plane chasing and shooting down a jet.

Again, history made!

Macon is a delightful fellow to talk with and a joy to listen to. He looks at what his life was, as just what happened. He is a most humble individual. His message, is for all to do their best and to keep learning. As he tells it, he repeats the Tuskegee Motto, “Aim high, Believe in yourself, Use your brain, Never quit, Be ready

efore I write my column, I will often look at the calendar to see what special days are in that month.

This month, however, there was no need to do that.

On July 4, 1776, we declared that we were no longer going to accept the tyrannical rule and oppression from the king of Great Britain. We were going to

By Beryl Williams take the control of our economy, our government and our freedom. You know the end of the story. We did succeed and became an independent nation. Due to that we have more freedom than any other country in the world and are richly blessed as well.

However, as I was contemplating all this, an interesting thought came to me. July 4th is about fighting for our freedom from oppression by claiming our independence. Yet, freedom from true oppression, comes from dependence on Jesus Christ. There are so many forms of oppression that we experience in our lifetimes. We feel oppressed by the insanely fast pace of life that we now experience. The demands that are placed on us daily can cause feelings of being emotionally oppressed. We experience oppression from the Devil. In trying to “walk the walk”, we can experience oppression from the world around us.

Yet, we are told in His Word that if we depend on Him, we can experience true freedom from all forms of oppression in our lives. Here are just a few truths regarding the confidence we can have: “When I said, ‘My foot is slipping,’ your unfailing love, Lord, supported me.” Psalm 94:18 “When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place.” Psalm 118:5 “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14 “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Psalm 16:8 “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”

Isaiah 40:29 I can tell you from my own life experiences that the way to real freedom is, in fact, dependence on our Father. He gives me everything I need in much better ways than fighting for myself. We are all loved deeply by Him. Let us begin to depend on Him and see what wonders He will perform.

When we were kids we got spankings. There were guns in the closet. We knew not to touch them without an adult’s okay or we’d really get it. There were cleaning chemicals under the kitchen sink. If you touched that cupboard you got a swat on the hand. We knew the painful consequences of not following rules.

So we (mostly) obeyed our parents. If we really made Momma mad, we had to wait in our rooms while she calmed down enough to give us a controlled spanking. The waiting was worse than the spanking! I spanked my kids and they are good, kind, considerate adults. I don’t think a swat is out of line.

I listened to that and I would have to say that it appears the older ones are more industrious, considerate, harder working, and have more of a sense of right and wrong. Whether it was from a stricter method, I can only guess.

One thing I can say that I learned for sure: children have to know there is a consequence for every behavior, and consistency is very important. Thanks for writing. GG Dear Gabby Gayle: I seem to be at a crossroads in my life. I am in my late 70’s and chronically ill. I look around and I can only see that my doctors are very adept at keeping us alive. That is medicine it seems. Keep people alive at all costs. Never mind the quality of that life. It seems that medical science has made huge strides in almost every field. New joints, new organs, etc. I am all for the advances that help us live healthier and more mobile. What is bothering me is when do I say enough already. I don’t want anymore treatment just to keep me alive without the quality of life. It is hard to know where to draw the line on treatment. 1 Smithfield Roasted Garlic & Herb Pork Loin Filet, cut into 1 1/4-inch cubes 3 small zucchini squash, cut into 1/2-inch thick slices 2 large red bell peppers, cut into 1 1/4-inch pieces 1 large red onion, cut into 1 1/4-inch wedges

bamboo skewers, soaked in water 30 minutes olive oil 2 medium cucumbers, peeled 1 clove garlic, minced 1 1/2 c whole milk Greek yogurt 1/2 lemon juice 2 t chopped fresh dill weed 1/2 t sea salt freshly ground black pepper chopped fresh parsley Heat grill to 375 F. Alternately thread fresh pork cubes, zucchini, peppers and onions onto bamboo

skewers. Brush kebabs lightly with olive oil.

In food processor, process cucumbers and garlic until finely chopped. Drain liquid from cucumbers.

Stir cucumbers with yogurt, lemon juice, dill, sea salt and pepper. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Grill fresh pork skewers approximately 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until char marks form and pork is cooked through.

Garnish skewers with parsley and serve with tzatziki sauce for dipping.

Grilled Pork and Potato Planks Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 22 minutes Serves: 4

Nonstick cooking spray 2 Smithfield Roasted Garlic and Cracked Black Pepper Pork Tenderloins 2 pounds Yukon Gold or red potatoes, cut lengthwise into 3/4-inch-thick slices 2 T canola oil 3/4 c shredded reduced-fat or regular sharp cheddar cheese 1/2 c sour cream

1/4 c finely chopped green onions Heat charcoal or gas grill to medium; spray grates with nonstick cooking spray. Grill tenderloins until internal temperature reaches 150 F, turning occasionally, about 20 minutes.

Brush both sides of potato slices with oil; grill 15-20 minutes until just tender, turning occasionally. Remove potatoes and pork from grill.

Top potatoes with cheese, sour cream and onions. Serve with tenderloins cut into 1/4-inch thick slices.

I know people who jog five miles a day whose knees are just about ready to give out. They can’t even lift their own suitcase and goodness knows they can’t sprint. Now, there’s nothing wrong with jogging religiously. (Be careful in the summer heat though). You may get nice and trim. You’ll look great. It’s amazing for the cardiovascular system.

You’ll be able to eat whatever you want and not gain – at least for a little while. But you may reach a point where your central and peripheral nervous systems are not being challenged. You may notice the adipose tissue start to accumulate again.

Your joints may start to complain.

Jogging will become a harmful, repetitive motion. One of my newer clients has been doing CrossFit for years. She can do an obscene number of squats, burpees, pushups and such, but her body and brain are so used to it, she’s gaining weight. Not just weight, but fat. How do you get fat with an exercise routine like that? By not being physically fit overall.

In the fitness world, it’s better to be a jack of all trades than a master of one. I learned this the hard way after 15 years of competitive powerlifting. I know people who lift weights but can’t run across the street without being winded.

The point is, obsession in one direction, whether it’s exercise or appearance or dieting or building muscle or whatever – doing only one thing does not make a person fit. It only makes him or her good at doing one thing. It may give that person the “look” they want, but it doesn’t mean he or she is healthy.

You may look like you’re “in shape for summer” but it doesn’t mean you can outrun a thief, rescue a child from drowning or even carry your own groceries up the stairs. Looking good won’t help you avoid the doctor.

Neither will running, or lifting weights or any other such thing.

To be physically fit means that you are “fit for anything that may challenge you.” Fit to fight off disease from the inside out. Fit to go hiking with your family. Fit to go swimming with your grandchildren. Fit to pick up your own 50-pound suitcase when

Here’s a fun little checklist to help you begin: 1. Research the benefits of a “real foods only” diet. This is number one. Read the “old school” book by Dr. Norman Walker called “Natural Weight Control”. He explains exactly how “real” food is absorbed by the body as opposed to processed foods. It’s inspiring and terrifying at the same time.

Then ask your healthcare practitioner if this would be a good option for you.

2. Adopt a well-rounded fitness plan. Don’t just settle for cardio alone. Incorporate weights, bodyweight routines, explosive (HIIT) cardio, swimming, stretching, balance, relaxation and even dancing into the mix. Build your bone density, endurance, coordination and strength skills.

Gardening or swimming is a great way to start if you’ve been sedentary all winter.

3. Remember — fat is not the enemy. A little body fat is not a bad thing. Healthy fats are good for you. Don’t sacrifice your healthy hormone and bone density levels to be thin.

4. Accept your body type. You are what you are.

Instead of working against your body type, learn skills that enhance your natural strengths, abilities and personal preferences. Don’t force yourself to hike when you’d rather be swimming. There are plenty of ways to change things up while doing what you love.

5. ENJOY the process!

Seniors invited to take part in vacation volunteerism

or most, vacations are for kicking back and taking in the sites. For others like Kay Striklan and her husband, Lynn, it’s an opportunity to give something to communities in need. Learning about a country, the people they serve and themselves are the memories they bring home.

Those who enjoy volunteering while on holiday keep busy sharing their time and talents with others at their own expense – whether digging wells, planting gardens or teaching anything from English to computer skills, from health care to nutrition.

The couple made their first trip to Tanzania in 2001 in what was a combined anniversary and milestone birthday celebration. “I had always wanted to see East Africa,” Stricklan said. “I wanted to go on safari. Then I happened to check out Global Volunteers to see if we could also do a project through them. It wasn’t the animals that enchanted us as much as the people we were able to serve.”

Since 1984 Global Volunteers has provided services to communities in

need around the world through one-, two-and three-week projects. Global Volunteers reports, “Half of our volunteers are 55 and older – 30 percent are over 65.”

During their first three-week visit, the Striklans met Andrew Mbughi.

Tanzania.” This, in turn, led to the creation of Tutaweza, an educational aid project providing scholarships.

The organization has awarded 60 scholarships for students, mostly orphans, to continue their education.

Mbughi volunteers as the liaison between the Tanzanian children and the Colorado Springs-based nonprofit.

In October, Striklan will make her seventh trip to Tanzania. “My husband has gone one more time than I have, we’ll be even after this one” she said.

Usually, their visits are meeting with Mbughi and the scholarship recipients.

This year’s trip will be different.

Not only will it include four, possibly six, others from Colorado along with locals from the Tanzanian village of Ipalamwa, but they will partner with Global Volunteers on the Reaching Children’s Potential (RCP) project.

RCP is concerned, among other things, with the issue of stunting, a problem, Stricklan says is not improving. According to the Global Volunteers website “Stunting is caused by a complex array of factors, but in summary, it is the result of insufficient food, nutrition and protection from disease during the first 1000 days from conception through the second birthday – and inadequate parental education.”

Toward this end, volunteers will work with families on hygiene, developing skills so parents can better

Not all of the trips the Stricklans have made to Tanzania have been through Global Volunteers. The ones they’ve made as part of Tutaweza have required them to do all of the planning and organizing. By contrast, Stricklan said, Global Volunteers provides participants with all of the necessary information to ensure they feel comfortably prepared for the tasks at hand, and the organization makes all the arrangements.

“Global Volunteers has got your back,” she said.

Included in the $2,095 cost are food, lodging,

evacuation insurance and local transportation. Air fare and incidentals are additional expenses.

Volunteering is nothing new for Stricklan who doesn’t just assist those in Tanzania. Locally, she has been active through Lutheran Family Services for many years. “When it comes to volunteering,” she said, “I’m kind of an addict.”

Admittedly, Stricklan said she likes to travel and not all trips involve volunteerism. Although, she noted, she likes to find ways to ensure her tourist dollars go to the local community rather than big businesses.

But it’s Tanzania that holds a special place in

her heart. “The smiles here are just the best,” she said. “There is just such joy that comes from working with little kids. I love getting into the traditions of the country. It’s wonderful. It’s more than wonderful.”

She said she sees volunteer vacations, which are popular among seniors through Global Volunteers, “As a way to reach outside your comfort zone; to lend their gifts to a project. It’s an experience that is life changing … and senior citizens are revered in Tanzania.”

Widow finds new purpose

Many of Volunteer of America’s senior volunteers say they are lonely and are looking for something to do—Ardene was one such volunteer.

After 10 plus years of being the primary care giver for her ailing husband, his death both broke her heart and opened her schedule. She had been stuck at home for so many years she could no longer stand to be there.

Enter the Foster Grandparent Program. Once through training, Ardene was placed with a secondgrade teacher at a District 11 school, volunteering 15 hours a week. After two days, her face was as bright as a Christmas tree.

“I had not expected to feel so welcomed by the kids and the teacher.

They are so wonderful, and I feel like I am doing good work.” Ardene said.

The need

Head Start (toddlers and 3 to 5-year-olds), Elementary Schools and Boys & Girls Clubs are always in

need of volunteers. This program was created to allow seniors on a fixed income the ability to contribute to their community without draining their resources and instead receive a non-taxable stipend (does not affect HUD, food stamps etc.) of $2.65 an hour, for training and volunteering, reimbursement of mileage or transportation costs, and all costs to complete the application.

Do you really know how to pet a cat

By Sara Ferguson Dear Ms Kitty, I recently adopted a cat who I was told was affectionate. However, when I go to pick him up and snuggle him, he runs away from me and even sometimes scratches. How can I get him to love me more?

Frustrated in Florence Dear Frustrated, Most of us were taught to reach down, stroke the cat with palm from head to tail and repeat. But if you could ask cats, they might tell another story.

The fact is, all cats are different.

Each cat has his or her own preference for touch, their “touch threshold.”

Some like to be petted on the head and some don’t. Some like to be scratched at the tail while some can’t stand it. Some like a strong touch while some like a very light one.

There can even be big differences in the touch threshold of very young kittens. That’s all the more reason, especially if you’ve just adopted an adult cat who already has a lifetime of touch preferences, to learn their likes and dislikes first.

Cats are small animals in a big world. Looming over them can feel like they are about to be hurt by a predator. Cats who have had bad experiences may see hands as the most threatening part of a human.

All cats appreciate having a say in how they are petted. You can give them that say by paying close attention to their body language.

If cats freeze, flatten their ears and close their eyes tightly, they are giving you clear messages that your petting technique could be improved.

Try getting down on the cat’s level at first. This will make you seem less of a predator.

Let the cat come to you and rub on your legs, or arms if you’re sitting down. In cat language, this means they trust you enough to behave like another cat friend.

The best technique for petting a new cat is to start by simply asking if the cat wants to be petted. As Jackson Galaxy says, “Let the cat pet you!”

Offer a finger or knuckle at their eye level. Then listen for the answer by waiting for positive body language.

Cats who actually want to be petted will move toward you, even if it’s just a slight lean in. Their eyes will

be soft, with normal sized pupils (unless it’s low light).

A slow blink will tell you they feel safe with you. Their ears and whiskers will be forward. If they choose to touch you, you have the green light.

Many cats do not like to have their heads patted but enjoy starting at their shoulders. Try a very light touch at first.

If the cat seems especially sensitive to hands, try petting with the back of your hand. That can also feel less threatening.

The best indicator a cat likes what you’re doing is pushing back a little when you offer your hand. When you get to the base of the tail and the cat pushes back up into elevator tail position, rest assured you’ve learned their petting style!

They will also tell you when they don’t like what you’re doing.

Overstimulation can happen with any cat, but is especially something to watch for when you’re just getting to know someone.

Look for these behaviors in cats with a low threshold for petting: • Restlessness • Skin rippling • Ears flattening or flicking • Tail thumping or thrashing • Turning head toward the petting If any of those things happen, stop petting! Wait for the cat to choose to

pet you. If that doesn’t happen, wait for another petting session.

Many cats prefer not to be picked up, especially if you have not yet built up trust. Think about what it must feel like if you’re a 10-pound cat to be suddenly scooped up by a creature 10-20 times your size and be held in the air many times your height. No wonder they sometimes struggle!

If you want to pick up a cat, start by getting him or her used to being on your lap (food rewards don’t hurt!).

Pick up the cat from your lap to your shoulders, letting the back legs rest on one arm while supporting the front with the other.

Look for signs that the cat is

enjoying this, like a relaxed body, soft eyes, leaning into you. Build up that trust first.

Then you can gradually stand up, adding height to knowing you aren’t going to drop anyone. Trust is everything with a new cat.

Of course, purring and kneading (making biscuits) usually also go with rubbing and pushing back into your hand. In cat language, that is the highest compliment of all!

American Patriots band to host benefit concert Aug. 3

D

oyle Combs, producer/conductor for the American Patriots Big Band and Jazz Orchestra, is all about triggering happy memories for audience members while igniting a spirit of patriotism and supporting our veterans.

“Once we start playing this music, it brings back memories and lightens their spirit,” Combs said.

The American Patriots Big Band, which features former and active members of the U.S. Armed Forces, will perform a benefit show for the Peak Military Care Network on Aug. 3 at the Ent Center for the Arts, 5225 N. Nevada. Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $32.50. “(Peak Military Care Network) services hundreds of veterans and their families,” Combs added.

Combs, who produced the band’s Big Band Gospel Music Show back in May, said the August concert will feature music of the 40s, 50s and 60s.

CONCERT/from page 28 will be a salute to veterans and well as a salute to the country. That will include songs such as music “God Bless America,” “Stars and Stripes” and “America the Beautiful.”

“We don’t want to just play for people. We want to play to people and remind them how great our country is and how great our musical heritage is,” Combs added.

He and director Steve Harget have a pool of around 25 musicians to pull from to put together the 17-piece band. Harget and Combs have worked together for more than 20 years. Both have been musicians since their youth.

“I started when I was 7 years old.

I haven’t stopped yet,” said Harget, who plays clarinet and saxophone.

While in high school, Harget was featured on the network television show Ted Mack & the Original Amateur Hour. Harget retired from the Air Force Academy Band in 1984.

Though he’s more into producing/ conducting these days, Combs is a trombonist.

“I worked my way through college that way. Now I serve as a producer,” Combs said. “It’s easier to hire these guys. Most of them are former military. They are the cream of the crop.”

Combs and Harget are proud of the top-notch musicians they have in the group. The musicians are mostly assigned to the Air Force Academy Band and also work with the Falconairs, the sister organization to the world famous Airmen of Note in Washington D.C. The band and vocalists have performed with such artists as the Temptations, The Four Freshmen, Natalie Cole, Ray Charles, Wayne Newton, Sarah Vaughn, Mel Torme, The Jimmy Dorsey Band, Doc Severinsen, Louis Belson and Bob Hope.

Combs has conducted more than 5,000 public performances in his career. He has performed professionally throughout the U.S., Mexico and Europe opening for Les Paul and Mary Ford, the Statler Brothers and “Hee Haw” comedian Grady Nutt.

He’s also worked with Christian artists Bill and Gloria Gaither, Sandi Patty, First Call and TRUTH. He initially formed the American Patriots Big Band in 2014, however a shoulder injury sidelined the project.

It got going, full-steam, just last year.

Looking ahead, Combs has a goal to pull together sponsors and take the band to smaller communities, such as cities with populations of 25,000 or

fewer. He’d like to be able to host free shows in those communities and keep the patriotic spirit alive.

“We want to lighten their spirit with one of the finest bands in the country,” he said. “The time is right for that in our country. That’s what we would really like to do.”

A homeless man, who’d obviously seen his share of hard times, approached a well-dressed gentleman on the street.

“Hey, Buddy, can you spare two dollars?” the homeless man asked.

The gentleman responded, “You are not going to spend it on liquor are you?”

“No, sir, I don’t drink,” retorted the man.

“You are not going to throw it away in some crap game, are you?” asked the gentleman.

“No way, I don’t gamble.”

“You wouldn’t waste the money at a golf course for greens fees, would you?”

“Never,” said the homeless man.

“I don’t play golf.”

The gentleman asked the homeless man if he would like to come home with him for a homecooked meal, to which he accepted eagerly. While they were heading for the man’s house, the homeless man’s curiosity got the better of him.

“Isn’t your wife going to be angry when she sees a guy like me at your table?” he asked.

These great questions and answers are from the game show, “Hollywood Squares,” when Peter Marshall was the host.

Just throw them in the dirty

Summer is here and the house feels like a sauna. I figure it’s time to start up the swamp cooler since it’s not going to cool off until October.

I gather all the parts to start up my swamp cooler: faucet, ball valve, snow cake, one or two brass clamp nuts, and several brass clamp sleeves and brass inserts. Even though I said a little prayer, I still find myself at the hardware store buying parts, anticipating what might go wrong this year.

I get home. Here goes nothing.

I assemble and attach all the pieces of the water supply, muttering another prayer of thanks that the cooler is on the side of the house and not on the roof.

I turn on the water and am grateful that the water spraying like Niagara Falls is clean water. That’s my second bath of the day.

I turn off the water, take a big breath and apply Teflon tape to stop the leaks. After turning the water on and off a few times and removing the tape, I realize the connections are no longer leaking, but the rubber hose from the water to the cooler has sprung a leak. Must have been that feral cat or the ninjas that live in the neighborhood.

I turn off the water again and connect the splicer. I check the water level in the cooler. It should be good since the floater hasn’t been touched since last year—floater is good. I take a deep breath.

The water is coming out of the spiders at a steady rate and the pads are well watered. Now I go into the house and turn on the motor, which runs like a racehorse. The cool air feels like Alaska has moved into my living room. Isn’t summer a wonderful thing?

Falls and fractures: Facts, tips that may limit falls

As we age, we begin to learn – sometimes firsthand – how devastating a fall can be. It isn’t quite as easy as it once was to hop back up and continue on our way.

Each year, more than one in four Americans aged 65 and over fall, which contributes to roughly 3 million emergency room visits and nearly 30,000 deaths per year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While the majority of falls are non-life-threatening, they can take a serious toll on quality of life and independence.

The good news, however, is that most falls are preventable. Being aware of risk factors and taking the proper precautions can reduce your chances of

serious injury, and help you maintain and improve the quality of your health and remain independent.

Important risk factors and tips for avoiding falls: • Lower-body strength – People who have weaker lower bodies or have trouble with balance and walking should take extra precautions. Do exercises that can strengthen your legs and improve balance.

• Medication – Any time you get a new prescription, ask your pharmacist or doctor about side effects like dizziness or drowsiness. These can affect your balance.

• Footwear – Pay attention to foot pain as it may be a symptom of poor footwear. Make sure your shoes fit appropriately and are comfortable. Wear low-heeled shoes with rubber soles for good traction. Generally, avoid wearing slippers, shoes with leather soles or high heels. See a doctor if you are experiencing foot pain.

• Clutter – Most falls happen at home. Rugs or objects in your way can be problematic. Remove clutter, fix steps that are uneven and make sure there is adequate lighting throughout your home.

• Physical support – If you don’t already have them, install grab bars and handrails in the bathroom and on stairways. Use a cane, walker, crutches or anything else that will help make walking easier.

• Hearing and vision – Get your vision and hearing checked regularly. Problems with hearing or sight can throw off your balance and coordination.

Ask your doctor if you could benefit from some vision or hearing aids.

Falls are more common than many people think, and all of us are susceptible. So be aware of risks from your medications, stay active, clear your home of trip hazards and talk to your doctor about strategies you could try to avoid a potentially devastating fall.

I Love My Pet T

his is Berkley, a schnauzer/terrier mix. He was rescued from a shelter and is right around 10 or 11 years old. He’s pictured with his best buddy at our house — my grandson Jaxson. Berkley loves cuddling on the couch and can’t be without a blanket. He’ll often pull an afghan down from the top of the couch to lay on. He’s quick to let us all know when he needs to go outside and when he needs water. He loves playing with his toy ball .. and raiding the bathroom trash can when he can sneak in.

Whenever Jaxson leaves the house, he’s always sure to say goodbye to Berkley.
