Trying to keep busy

’m not good at sitting still. I thrive on always having something to look forward to.

Being a musician that includes keeping a consistent schedule of band rehearsals and shows.

That’s all changed because of COVID-19. Instantly, all of those planned events are no more.

Speaking of shows, it also means our planned Life After 50 fun senior Anthony Welch Life After 50 Editor expo, Fifty Fest, is postponed. We hope to host the event this summer.

The bright side of all this is my family is getting a ton of more time together. We’re working on organizing things around the house, taking walks around the neighborhood, my son figured out how to ride a bike, we’re all working on different projects and reading more.

I’m grateful for this extra family time. That, combined with not watching the news and ignoring Facebook more, makes things seem normal. It’s nice to be outside and seeing neighbors with their kids (from a distance of course) and walking their dogs, waving to one another.

I’ve always been a worrier ... sometimes to the extreme. So I’ve had to shut off those inner thoughts about all of this. I think it’s important to stay calm and interact with your family in whatever way possible. Make more phone calls, use video chat apps to see your loved ones and call those friends you haven’t spoken with in a while.

We all need distractions during this time. Keep busy in anyway you can. Once it’s all over, we’ll all have a new appreciation for one another.

More to a mouth than a smile

In these strange and uncertain times we find ourselves wondering, with anxiety, what tomorrow brings.

One thing for certain is: humanity will always be there, tomorrow.

The question is always, “How do we find ourselves fitting in?” We must never get so busy making a living that we forget to make a life.

So this life we make may be full of color and joy, or not so much. I do know there are everyday commitments that help us get through the day. Some are automatic and some are not. We all arise to our own humor (thinking about breathing) and in a weird way find ourselves breathing. This is just automatic. We move forward in our daily activities and time rounds the clock.

The fuel that moves us along is oxygen, food and water. No matter where you place your foot on this golden earth we have oxygen. This is not true for food or water. In today’s society the compliment of convenience is ubiquitous it seems.

As the body grows and the convenience of this life places a foothold in our daily living, we begin to lose the ability to naturally survive.

An example is the body’s need for vitamin D. Vitamin D comes in two forms Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3. Truly these are more like hormones than vitamins due to their molecular structure. Your body is riddled with what the profession calls “Vitamin D Receptors” (VDR). Every single cell in your body has receptors for Vitamin D3. When the body is deficient in Vitamin D3 the (VDR’s) go unused.

Unused VDR’s means work undone.

The sources of Vitamin D3 include salmon, herring, sardines, cod liver oil, canned tuna and egg yolks. Another source in sunlight. I remember in younger years the amount of daylight we could burn just being outdoors never seems long enough. It seems these days the youth for the most part are driven to be indoors doing other things. Our daily jobs or duties robs the sunlight from our bodies. The push against skin cancer and the call for everyone to cover up also robs us of Vitamin D3 production that is made when sunlight hits the skin.

Vitamins D is fat soluble meaning that it is deposited in the fat cells of the body.

Like anything too much Vitamin D will make you sick.

Now let’s think about a stack of logs piled high in the fall to be used to heat your house in the winter.

Assuming the stack needs to be replenished to get us thru a hard long winter, we would, and should, have plans to refill the log stack periodically when needed. What comes in, goes out and when you have no more then you suffer and in this case get really cold.

Vitamin D3 is similar. If the Vitamin D3 is not replenished daily then bad things happen and your body will suffer.

Recent research suggest that Vitamin D3 deficiency is related to getting sick or infected more often. Vitamin D3 deficiency is related to fatigue and tiredness. Bone and Back Pain, Depression, Impaired Wound Healing, Hair Loss, and Muscle Pain may all be related to Vitamin D deficiency.

Interestingly recent research relates a lack of Vitamin D to the following, “An observation of sleep improvement with Vitamin D supplementation led to a 2 year uncontrolled trial of vitamin D supplementation in 1500 patients with neurologic complaints who also had evidence of abnormal sleep. Most patients had improvement in neurologic symptoms and sleep but only through maintaining a narrow range of 25(OH) Vitamin D3 blood levels of 60-80 ng/ ml.” The World Epidemic of Sleep Dis-

Keeping the log pile at the right level with wood always guarantees heating the house. Keeping the Vitamin D level in your body at the sweet spot of 60 to 80 ng/ml seems to be the trick to health. The next time you are in your doctor’s office inquire about Vitamin D. Vitamin D3 specifically. Talk about your level and how you might find that sweet spot.

Most will find that their Doctor is already prescribing Vitamin D3 as part of their drug regimen. After all, it seems to be a big problem for today’s population.

Who knows you just might sleep better and feel better! Remember that sweet spot! A must do is the management of Vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D supplementation should be managed by a health care provider. An important fact about Vitamin D is that it is fat soluble and you can actually take too much and you will feel miserable over the sweet spot level.

Music is medicine for Nance Vixen

J

azz vocalist and percussionist Nance Vixen has never forgotten about the dream she had when she was in grade school.

“I had a dream about singing in an intimate, small venue,” she said. “That stayed with me forever.”

Born into a strict southern family (mandatory Sunday school and church every week until age 18), Vixen became infatuated with gospel singing at a very young age.

“Harmony singing was attractive, but soulful music was what touched me most,” Vixen said.

“Those young years are what drove me to seek truth through meditation and resulted in my trips to an Indian ashram as an adult.”

Early musical influences for Nance were the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Eagles, Poco, Aretha Franklin and 5th Dimension. “So much great music was being introduced via radio,” she said.

More obscure and very influential artists were Phoebe Snow, Janis Ian, Joan Armatrading, Wendy Waldman, Karla Bonoff, Laura Nyro – all women of color.

“My history also ignited a rebellious spirit to honor joy through music and singing. I was told that ‘entertainers, singers all end up in the bathroom with a needle in their arm,’” she added. “I smoked weed and had my first beer at 13, went to all the rock concerts I could get to. I tried all the drugs I could get my hands on (minus needles). I was a rebellious hippie child.”

At age 17, Vixen joined a band and started

seeking out voice teachers and other band opportunities. She performed in wedding bands, bar bands and Top 40 bands. She married and moved to Connecticut before getting divorced and returning to San Diego.

She sang five nights a week in the resort circuit, including the Hotel Del Coronado. She also started learning more about Latin rhythms and she and another woman fronted a band singing in Portuguese at certain gigs.

Nance sang with the band The Coachmen while living in Connecticut in 1984.

“I knew it was a great opportunity, and I knew I needed to find a great vocal coach,” Vixen said. “I found a wonderful coach in Martin Grusin.”

In 2003, Vixen was diagnosed with breast cancer. She stayed with her parents until their passing, and then decided California had grown too crowded. So she ventured to Colorado.

“I moved to Colorado for natural healing, acupuncture – I wanted to know all of it and all of it was much more affordable here than any other state at the time,” Vixen said. “I love the mountains. I don’t miss the ocean, though I do go visit.”

While living in California, Nance performed five nights a week, but also held down a corporate job during the day, working five days a week.

“I was in my 20s then. I had way more energy,” she said.

However, the cancer diagnosis changed everything.

“After my diagnosis with cancer, I stopped everything except music,” Nance said. “I thought, ‘If I’m going to survive this, I’m going to thrive it.’

I started supplementing gigs by teaching voice. You do other things to make money, but it’s still music.”

Coincidentally, Nance said she writes her best music during tough times.

“The (songs) I think are marketable come out of pain and tragedy. People that have gone through pain and tragedy; it either softens them and makes them more reflective or it makes them bitter,” she said. “The best way is to be reflective and grow.”

As of January, Nance is 16 years free of cancer.

NANCE/from page 4 “I use food as medicine. I’ve been researching for 16 years do I stay alkaline? What foods are acidic? It’s an ongoing thing,” she added.

Nance wrote many songs during her battle with cancer. One that stands out, however, is about the guy she was dating at the time.

“It’s a song called ‘Smooth Cat Daddy.’ When I was diagnosed, I knew that the man I was dating at the time was not going to be up for any of this and wasn’t going to be there. He took the approach, ‘I’m here for you,’ but I knew he wouldn’t stick to those words,” she said. “We went to this really nice bar overlooking the lake. I had a wig on. By then, my hair was gone. He had a few friends meet us there. One of his friends said, “I really like your hair Nance,’ so I lifted it up and handed it to him. Of course, the guy I was dating was mortified. I get joy out of that. I kind of like to shock people, but I don’t like to offend people. The worst thing you can be is just kind of boring and safe. And I don’t stay safe.”

In 2014, Nance took up hand drumming.

“I loved it. It infused such inspiration for me, and it took me away from the voice and not focusing on it so much,” she said.

Nance started learning Latin rhythms and how to sing while playing percussion. It added a new element to her repertoire. While she’s performed solo gigs, she prefers making music with others.

“A lot of the material I choose is songs that people remember but don’t get played out. A lot of people remember them and they love them, music from the 30s and 40s, back when music was different,” Vixen said. “Like Rickie Lee Jones, Joni Mitchell, a scat hero of mine Jon Hendricks and Al Jarreau — my all-time vocal hero. You don’t have to just do cookie-cutter classic rock or Top 40. You can, I guess. It just seems kind of boring to me. I live to be inspired and I look to inspire others.”

Vixen’s interest in alternative healing and “staying away from doctors and hospitals” has led her to learn about the impact of music on health and how it impacts Alzheimer’s.

“Who knows what’s going to happen? I’m 60. It just doesn’t feel right to say it, but it’s the truth,” Vixen said. “Someday, my hearing might go.

I’m getting elderly. I feel like as long as the spirit is young and you can laugh, and can remember we’re all vibrational spirits. We don’t have to be old. What 60 and 70 is today, is not what our parents were. The attitude was, ‘Let’s just get comfortable in our recliner and watch TV.’ So I stay active with yoga and meditation and eating well without forcing myself to

be on a diet. If I want cheese or I want steak, I’m going to have it. That’s my approach, and I’m going to cling to it until it doesn’t work.”

Vixen also volunteers as a companion for hospice in her spare time.

“I was with my mom when she passed, and I was honored. I’ve done it for a friend as well. In India, in meditation, you dove into the passing and what happens to us,” she said. “I find it fascinating. They’re at a place where they’re moving along and facing it. I feel like I’m good at it.

Most people can’t handle the conversation. I want to be a part of making a nicer existence for us. We need to have more options when we

get older. That’s the direction I’m going.”

That all goes along with Vixen’s “prescription for youth.”

“Meditate. Remain playful. Be kind. And stay rebellious.”

Seniors and COVID-19: UCHealth physician offers answers

By Anthony Welch Dr. Hillary Lum, who specializes in Geriatric Medicine at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital took a few minutes to answer questions about the Coronavirus.

Life After 50: Are seniors at certain age more at risk for the Coronavirus? 50 up? 60 up?

Lum: As a general statement, the older a person is, the more at risk they are for coronavirus causing symptoms and potentially even serious illness.

Based on published studies from China, Italy and emerging data from the U.S., individuals in their 80s, 70s, and 60s are at higher risk, though this is very closely related to underlying chronic conditions that they may have.

It is very important for seniors to continue to manage their conditions by taking their medications as prescribed, and making plans to not run out of their medications.

LA50: With all the gloom and doom in the news, do you have any positive news about the virus that can give seniors hope?

Lum: Many seniors are committed to remaining connected to one another, their families of choice, communities and neighbors, even during these times. I regularly text with my neighbors who are in their 70s and 80s. I see friends having extended family online weekly video check-ins.

A patient recently shared how, despite the adult day center being closed, she is now friends with other attendees that they have remained connected by phone even when the day center is closed.

Silver Key’s Coronavirus response plan, safety strategy For Life After 50

ilver Key Calls of Reassurance are available for seniors!

Extended social isolation and loneliness significantly impact the quality of life and health of older adults.

The current public health crisis has increased the need and demand for seniors to receive these critical calls and connection with others. Seniors who self-enroll can be called weekly (1-3 times) to talk with a Silver Key volunteer. We currently offer two types of helpful calls: • Social Calls: for seniors who wish to have a weekly, bright, and supportive connection with a well-trained V.I.P. volunteer.

• Safety Checks: similar to Social Calls in terms of conversation, but have an emergency component. If the senior does not answer after three calls, emergency contacts (maintained on file) will be contacted. If the emergency contacts cannot be reached, Silver Key will request for police to make a welfare check at the senior’s on-file address.

In this time of uncertainty, we know that many seniors and their families are deeply concerned.

To that end we are following the advice and direction of Meals on Wheels America and public health officials, by enacting the following protocols: During the current circumstances, concerning the Coronavirus (COVID-19), we will make every effort to continue to bring this important service as we always have. We plan to observe a 6-foot distance between the delivery person and the client.

• When delivering meals to homes, we will bring the meals to the door as usual and leave them in any

cooler or container that is designated for HDM or Meals on Wheels. This service will not change.

• If there is not already a container, each driver will bring a cooler with them, in order to place the meals in for clients to retrieve, once they have maintained the 6-foot distance.

• Meals will be placed in a cooler bag and left at the door before knocking or ringing the doorbell, then the driver will step back at least 6 feet.

• If you would like to speak with the person delivering meals, the driver will need to maintain the 6-foot

Of course, the restrictions and guidelines are different in various regions around the country, depending on how severe the outbreak is.

You can spend time outdoors as long as you respect other people and stay about 6 feet away from other people.

“There’s no magic number. But, the odds of breathing in infected, aerosolized particles drops as a function of distance from the person who is coughing or sneezing. Six feet is an arbitrary distance, but it’s a good rule of thumb,” said Dr. Kenneth Tyler, Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the department’s Louise Baum Endowed Professor.

Tyler sees patients and supervises medical students at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital and at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Aurora. He’s a professor of immunology and microbiology with sub-specialties in virology and

infectious diseases.

Doctors and public health experts are doing all they can to prevent people from getting COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus.

“If you don’t have a treatment, the best thing you can do is to minimize the chance of exposure. That’s why social distancing is so helpful. We don’t want large gatherings and, if possible, we don’t want people being close to each other in enclosed spaces,” Tyler said.

“If you’re not exposed, you’re not going to get it,” Tyler said. “Social distancing is one of the most reasonable things you can do.”

Here in Colorado, now that the new coronavirus is spreading widely, especially in mountain resort communities, Gov. Jared Polis has shut down ski areas for at least a week while closing gyms, theaters, bars, casinos and in-house service at restaurants for at least 30 days. Many public entities like libraries, schools and cultural entities also shuttered indefinitely.

Elsewhere in the world, restrictions are more severe. Italians must stay in their homes and some have

taken to singing from their balconies and windows to cheer one another up.

In northern California this week, county health officials asked about 6 million people in six of the most affected counties to stay home for weeks, except to complete necessary functions like showing up as essential workers, getting food or picking up medicine.

In the affected California counties, residents are allowed to walk their dogs, as long as they stay at least 6 feet away from other people.

Dr. Daniel Pastula strongly recommends that all Coloradans avoid mass gatherings and try to stay about 6 feet apart when they’re outdoors or at stores.

Pastula has worked on the front lines of epidemics around the world, including outbreaks of illnesses like West Nile and Zika and a rare polio-like illness called Acute Flaccid Myelits.

He did part of his training in epidemiology and infectious diseases with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Pastula said it’s safe to be outdoors.

“If you stay about 6 feet away from people, then it’s fine to go for a walk or hike or play on the lawn,” Pastula said.

Playgrounds can be much more challenging. While most children have not become severely ill with the new coronavirus, also called COVID-19, they can have mild cases without known it and can become carriers who transmit the virus to others.

Pastula said if parents take their children to playgrounds now, they have to practice excellent hand hygiene.

“Obviously, the problem at playgrounds is the surfaces. Theoretically, infectious droplets could be on surfaces,” he said.

Parents should help children wash their hands frequently (soap and water is best; hand sanitizer can be used as a back-up) since it’s very difficult for kids to avoid touching their faces.

And, parents should wash their own hands frequently, while teaching their children to do the same.

If at all possible, avoid large crowds. Both state and federal officials have urged a nationwide halt to gatherings of 50 people or more.

And, President Donald Trump issued guidelines this week encouraging people to skip or cancel events with more than 10 people.

“The idea behind all of this is to limit the spread,” Pastula said.

How to make your own hand sanitizer

A

s the fear of coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads across the U.S., many people have stocked up on hand sanitizer. It’s already sold out in many stores and online prices have skyrocketed due to opportunistic sellers.

However, there are alternative methods to sanitizing your hands, cell phone cases, doorknobs, etc. Here are some of my homemade hand sanitizers, using essential oils that all have some degree of activity against pathogens.

These are intended as recipes for external application only. Do not spray any of these on your face or near your eyes because it will burn.

Hydrogen peroxide You can still buy 3 percent hydrogen peroxide pretty much anywhere. Put this in a spray bottle and use it like you would hand sanitizer. Dilute it with a little water to make it last longer.

Here are some of my homemade hand sanitizers, using essential oils that all have some degree of activity against pathogens.

Tea tree essential oil Mix 10 drops of essential oil of tea tree and approximately 4 ounces of water and put it in a spray bottle. If the scent is too “antiseptic” for you, you can certainly add some other essential oil you like such as lemon or lavender—both of which offer even more antibacterial and antiviral benefits.

Eucalyptus in aloe vera Pour 1 ounce of aloe vera gel or juice into a 4-ounce spray bottle. The aloe juice is less viscous, so it goes into solution very nicely. The gel is thicker and it’s sold for external use. Next, add 10 drops of essential oil of eucalyptus and fill the bottle to the top with water.

Distilled white vinegar You probably have plain vinegar at home to use in recipes or for cleaning. You can buy a gallon of this stuff for around $5. Vinegar is a great disinfectant and is known to destroy many gram-negative bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella and other pathogens. To make a sanitizer with white vinegar, add five drops each of patchouli, lemongrass, tea tree and thyme.

Rubbing alcohol If the stores run out of everything, you can always use rubbing alcohol to kill germs. I recommend you dilute it by about 50 percent with water. To cut down on the alcohol scent, add some essential oil of eucalyptus, lemon or orange.

Colloidal silver Silver was the antibiotic of choice for years until proprietary drugs became available. Silver is a strong antibacterial. You can buy a bottle of colloidal silver and use it at 100 percent strength in your spray bottle. Don’t dilute it. I’d personally recommend that you add five drops each of clove and eucalyptus essential oil to the silver.

Tighten your glutes for additional low back protection. When you are able to hold a basic plank for 2 minutes, have someone put a 25-45lb plate on your back and try it for 20 seconds. Limit yourself to one set of weighted planks per day.

PUSHUP WALKUP: Start in a push up position and walk your hands out as far as possible.

The goal is to keep your back flat and touch your nose to the ground before walking back up.

Beginners can start from the knees.

BARBELL SIT UP: Lie flat on the floor or on a bench, feet straight out in front of you. Rest an empty barbell on your chest. Explosively sit up as you press the bar up and over head. The bar should travel in a straight line towards the ceiling, not out in front of you. When you feel like you’ve mastered the empty bar, add some weight!

L-SIT PULL UP: Why do regular pull-ups when you can do an L-SIT? Start in an L-Sit position with your legs extended straight and parallel to the floor. Keep them locked in place and perform pull-ups with your favorite grip.

MEDICINE BALL WHEELBARROW: (Careful with this one!) Start with your feet on a Medicine Ball or Swiss Ball and your hands on the ground in a push-up position. Slowly walk forward and use your feet to walk the ball along with you.

YIKES! FROG LEG SUPREME: (Careful with this one!) Lay on your back on the floor with your feet

together and legs open into a diamond position, aka Frog Legs. Bring your legs out and together like a breast stroke swim or a frog swim, using your entire core to keep you stable and strong.

I myself will stand on Psalm 91 verses 1,2,5 and 6: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.”

Please let this fact never leave our minds: We are a world, a nation, a state, a city and a neighborhood of fellow human beings that are all experiencing the same feelings and situations, to varying degrees. We are all in this together.

And we can also be together in all the wonderous blessings that the resurrection of Jesus means. That is one of the most beautiful aspects to the Lord’s love and provision. It is available to any human being that chooses to accept it.

While the sacrifice on the cross

that Jesus made for us is of course, monumentally crucial, without the resurrection, it would have meant nothing.

Without the resurrection, Jesus’ ministry ends in defeat and disillusionment. Without the resurrection, one can only pity Jesus as a dead martyr whose lofty ideals were sadly misunderstood.

With it however, one must stand in awe of the exalted Messiah, the Son of the living God, who gave His life as a ransom for many, who presently reigns at God’s right hand, and who will one day return to glory to fix this broken world.

Wow. “Who will one day return to glory to fix this broken world.” In the midst of all this fear and suffering, let us cling to that truth. He will return and He will make all things right. So, whether we are able to gather together and celebrate the wonder of Jesus’ resurrection or are forced to stream it, let nothing lessen our joy because, He has risen, He has risen indeed!

ON THIS DAY ...

Circa 1900: In the early 20th century, the bicycle was the preferred method of transportation in Colorado Springs. Cycling caught on quickly in the city thanks, in part, to organizations such as the Pikes Peak Roadsters, a club organized in 1895 with the mission to “procure all of the pleasure and glory possible in riding a bicycle.” The Roadsters organized long distance rides, races, bicycle shows, and jubilees to support this mission.

By 1900, more than a dozen bicycle dealers and repair shops were listed in the city directories.

Local physician Dr. Samuel Caldwell commented extensively about bicycles in a letter to the 1901 Colorado College Century Chest time capsule, “A few automobiles have appeared in the city, but as yet they are too costly and noisy and smelly…

Bicycles are the most popular and convenient means of getting about and there are thousands of them in use … It looks as if the bicycle has taken a permanent place among our wheeled vehicles, and I think you will be using them in 2001 but prophesying is dangerous business.” .

I hate to say it, but I cannot come up with many gifts of aging. Which leaves me with one thought: what we make of life, at any age, is the real gift. Here’s some ways to find the true gifts of aging: • Believe in making meaning.

Whatever comes our way, we have the ability to make our own meaning.

• Look for gifts. We can’t see what we don’t look for.

• Be thankful. Seeing what’s working for us makes us feel less a victim and allows for, maybe not happiness, but more peace of mind.

Viktor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning, survived Theresienstadt concentration camp in the Czech Republic. What he learned from his experience was this: the one thing the Nazis could not take away from inmates was their ability to make meaning out of their experience.

After the war, Frankl created his therapeutic approach, logotherapy. He believed that any symptom we have (depression, anxiety, rage, etc.) is the result of the meaning we make of our life experiences. Much deeper than making lemonade out of the lemons life gives us, it’s a similar philosophy.

Whatever life deals us, we have the ability to decide what to do with it.

Recipes: Quick, easy comfort dinners along with dessert Family Features

quick and easy way to get comfort food on your dinner table is this recipe for Cheesy Baked Mushroom Chicken. Add some green beans and mashed cauliflower for a well-rounded meal for your family.

Cheesy Baked Mushroom Chicken Nonstick cooking spray 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1/2 c flour 4 T butter 8 oz. mushrooms, sliced 1/2 c chicken broth 1/4 t salt 1/4 t pepper 2 c shredded mozzarella cheese 1/2 c Parmesan cheese, grated 1/4 c green onions, sliced Heat oven to 375 F. Prepare baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Cut each chicken breast in half.

Place flour in resealable bag. Place chicken in resealable bag with flour; toss to coat.

In large skillet, melt butter. Add

chicken to skillet; brown all sides.

Transfer chicken from skillet to 11-by-7-inch baking dish.

In skillet, saute sliced mushrooms in remaining butter until softened. Add chicken broth, salt and pepper. Bring

to boil then cook 5 minutes. Spoon over chicken.

Bake 15 minutes. Sprinkle with cheeses and green onions. Bake 5 minutes, or until cheese is melted.

Cranberry-Orange Pork Loin

1 T oil 1 pork loin (4 pounds), tied at 1-inch intervals 14 oz. cranberry sauce 1 c dried cranberries 3/4 c orange juice 1/8 t cinnamon 3 strips orange zest salt, to taste pepper, to taste In skillet over medium heat, heat oil.

Sear pork loin on all sides.

In slow cooker, stir cranberry sauce, dried cranberries, orange juice, cinnamon and orange zest until combined. Set pork loin in middle of sauce mixture and drizzle sauce over meat.

Cover and cook on low 4 hours, or until meat reaches 140-145 F. Transfer pork to cutting board. Remove twine.

Strain cranberries from slow cooker; set aside.

Pour strained liquid into skillet. Add salt and pepper, to taste. Simmer 7-8 minutes.

Spoon cranberries and sauce over pork loin.

Skillet Apple Pie with Caramel Sauce

4 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1/4 c sugar

1 1/2 T cinnamon, divided 1 T lemon juice 6 T butter 1/4 c, plus 2 t, brown sugar 2 refrigerated pie crusts 2 t whipping cream caramel sauce Heat oven to 350 F. In large bowl, combine apples, sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon and lemon juice until apples are covered. Set aside.

In oven-safe, 10-inch nonstick skillet, melt butter. Add 1/4 cup brown sugar and remaining cinnamon; mix until combined. Boil 5-8 minutes.

In same skillet, place one pie crust over brown sugar mixture. Pour apples over pie crust. Cover apples with second pie crust. Cut slits in top to release steam. Brush whipping cream over crust.

Sprinkle with remaining brown sugar.

Bake 35-45 minutes until crust is golden brown.

Drizzle with caramel sauce.

How to take your cat for a walk Canine Column: Better days Dear Ms. Kitty,

My cat Gandalf seems very curious about the outdoors. I know there are many dangers outside, but it still makes me sad to see him watching me at the door when I’m relaxing in the yard. Is there a safe way to let him come out with me?

Outside in Ordway

Dear Outside, Yes, many cats can be trained to walk on a harness and leash! As usual, cats need gentle instruction to learn do something that’s foreign to them.

Is my cat a good candidate for harness training?

First ask yourself, “Is my cat confident enough to go outside?” If Gandalf runs to hide any time someone new comes to the door, you may want to avoid harness training.

Forcing shy cats outside can make them even more afraid.

However, if Gandalf is confident and eager to learn new things, he will probably be a good candidate.

What kind of harness should I use?

You will need a harness, or walking jacket, for Gandalf. Cat necks are more delicate than dogs’, so using only a collar can hurt them. Please look for one made specifically for cats, like the walking jackets available at Happy Cats Haven.

A good harness or walking jacket should fit snugly, but allow free movement. Cat necks are usually smaller than dogs’ so they need an adjustable collar at the neck. If the collar isn’t adjustable, Gandalf may be able to slip out of it, especially if frightened.

How to introduce the harness Cats who have never experienced anything on their backs will often act as if they’ve been caught by a predator: they either flatten and freeze, or fight back. Consistent training helps them acclimate.

Try not to push Gandalf too fast.

Allow him to tell you when he’s ready for the next step by relaxing and enjoying the process. Keep it positive and have those treats ready!

1. Allow him to get familiar with the harness and leash by placing them in his sleeping area for a few days.

2. Once the harness is familiar, place it on his back for a few seconds, then remove. Repeat that process, adding seconds every time, until he’s comfortable with it.

A 3. Next, close the collar part around his neck for a few seconds and give him a favorite treat, then remove.

Repeat this too, adding seconds each time. Once he’s comfortable with that, close the torso clasp and repeat. Don’t forget the treats!

4. Once he is comfortable with the harness, bring out his favorite toy and have playtime while wearing it. This gets him used to the feel of the harness while his favorite activity is happening.

5. If Gandalf acts uncomfortable or afraid, reassure him and take the harness off to try again later. Forcing him will just give him a bad association with the harness.

How to walk outside

1. Walk with Gandalf around the house at first until he is comfortable.

2. Choose a safe, quiet location to start, like an enclosed yard or deck. If he has never been outside, go slowly until he’s relaxed.

3. Pick him up and take him outside to start. This will help train him not to dash out the door on his own.

4. Walking a cat is different from walking a dog. You don’t so much walk your cat as let him walk you!

5. If he gets frightened, return indoors. Never let him pull back on the harness to try to escape.

6. If he gets away, don’t chase after him. Sit on the ground, call him and offer a treat. Stay calm and entice your cat to come to you.

7. Create a signal when the walk is over: tell him “Home” and carry him indoors. Give him a treat and remove the harness.

Soon Gandalf will understand that by tolerating the harness, he gets to explore the great outdoors safely. That will be rewarding in itself, and you’ll have a cat who loves to go for walks!

s a dog walker, I am lucky to have a unique perspective on the strange times we’re in. While some of my clients are still needed in their physical offices, a growing number of them now work—or wait — from home.

Travelers who were looking forward to much-anticipated getaways have been grounded. Plans to visit family or friends over a weekend have been reconsidered.

From my end of the leash, I can tell you that as we humans are struggling to adapt to new realities, our dogs love the changes. Tails don’t lie.

On daily jaunts with my friend, Sherlock, I’ve started noticing a few things. Maggie hasn’t been frantically scratching at her window when we walk by—and there’s a car parked in her owner’s driveway.

Sid doesn’t run the chainlink fence surrounding his yard when he hears us coming—and I can see a TV on in his living room. Dogs and people tethered together—most of whom I have never seen before— stroll up and down the usually empty sidewalks; in the middle of the day.

We wave to each other and shout, “what a cute dog!” or “I like your hat!” Tails wag vigorously and ears perk way up as our four-legged friends spot each other.

Even in my own home, our dogs have happily designated themselves as my husband’s Executive Assistants these days. Crumbs from a lunchtime snack? Chip’s on it. Computer glitch during a deadline? Ernie offers his head to lower the blood pressure.

Thump, thump, thump; taptaptaptap; whoosh, whoosh… As I said, tails don’t lie.

Speaking of tails—the importance of these amazing appendages

should never be underestimated. First of all, tails are an extension of a dog’s spine. Long or short, the tail is a series of bones—bigger near the rump; smaller at the tip—with cushioned discs between them. Those spaces—as well as important muscles and nerves—are what allow Bailey flexibility to launch glass objects from the coffee table when she’s happy to see you.

When Molly goes chasing after that Frisbee, she uses her tail for counterbalance and agility. Rusty uses his tail as a rudder when he goes for a swim. Just as important as it is for fun stuff, the anatomy of a tail plays an important role in Jake’s bowel control. A swollen, lacerated or dangling tail should always be taken seriously—and should always be seen by a vet.

These times beg for a happy ending. My advice is to spend as much time with your dog as possible.

Toss that ball; brush that coat; smoosh together on the couch. If you can, go for a walk together. The view from your end of the leash just might make you feel better. The world is still a lovely place. Tails don’t lie.

Low-income Colorado seniors may be eligible for more financial help

Older adults age 65 and older or individuals who are disabled and own property or who rent may be eligible to receive a PTC 104 rebate.

In previous years, many low-income individuals were not eligible for a PTC 104 rebate if they lived in subsidized housing or nonprofit housing. However, starting in 2020, the rules were changed and regardless of where you live, if you meet the age and income guidelines, you can receive the rebate.

To be eligible, older adults must have an annual income of less than $15,192 (single person) and $20,518 (couple) from all sources such as Social Security, pensions, and interest or dividends.

Individuals must prove lawful presence by submitting a Colorado driver’s license or ID. The address on your license or your ID must be the same as the address on the application.

Individuals whose address is different may change their address in

person or online at the Colorado Department of Revenue.

To complete the application, you must include the amount of income you received, the amount of rent paid in 2019, and the number of utilities paid. You must sign the application, as well as the affidavit of lawful presence. A copy of the Colorado driver’s license or ID must be attached.

Rebates can be filed online at the Colorado.gov/RevenueOnline or you can complete and mail a paper copy to the Colorado Department of Revenue.

Applications must be mailed before Dec. 31, 2021, for the 2019 application. Individuals who have not applied for the 2018 rebate can apply until Dec. 31, 2020.

The maximum amount of the grant is $937 and the minimum amount is $315.

Five steps to getting a good night’s sleep after retirement creating the blueprint for a house. These blueprints, however, identify strategies available to help minimize risk, increase certainty, avoid excess taxes and assure a sufficient retirement income.

The answer could come down to whether you have a solid retirement plan—or a plan at all.

“Regardless of how much you accumulate for your retirement, poor planning or lack of planning can put you at risk of exhausting your resources,” said Tad Hill, a retirement planner and author of “Retire with Freedom.”

According to Hill, people nearing the end of their working years should follow this five-step process for a more secure retirement:

What is it you want out of retirement? To travel?

Volunteer? Spend time with grandkids? The first step isn’t about your financial portfolio; it’s about forming a clear image of your ideal retirement.

“Otherwise, even though your money may last the rest of your life, you may never achieve your dreams because you’re unclear on your dreams,” Hill said.

“Analyze all the factors that could affect your retirement plan over the next few decades and create a strategy for dealing with those risk factors with as much certainty as possible,” Hill advised.
