The Silver Streaks The Silver Streaks is a 55-plus Senior Ski Group which has been in existance in Colorado Springs for the past twenty years. There are no membership fees, and members travel by van to different ski resorts on Mondays and Wednesdays and return each evening to the comfort of their own beds. There is a fee for the van, currently $35 per trip, which is subject to change depending on gasoline prices. Members are responsible for their own equipment and lift tickets.

Meet The Computer Guy — Jeff Towne

W

hile he may be retired, Jeff Towne, a former computer engineer just can’t stay away from computers.

He was looking to still stay a little busy during retirement and started up his own business at home back in 2005, Jeff’s Computer Service. Towne’s business is helping people solve computer problems.

It just so happens a majority of Towne’s clients are seniors. He strives to make seniors more comfortable with computers and wants

them be able to take advantage of today’s technology without any stress.

“Computers are pretty scary. But the No. 1 thing I tell them is you can’t hurt them.

They worry they’re going to break something, you can delete something but you can’t hurt it,” he said.

Towne, 73, retired from Boeing in 1998 after working as a senior software engineer for 24 years. That position enabled him to work overseas in Germany for 12 years he

The Golden Bee: ‘Yards’ of History

This is the third profile in the Life After 50 “Historic Restaurants & Eateries” series.

In an era of thriving Pikes Peak region craft brewery start-ups and open table eating and drinking establishments, it seems only fitting to profile an historic local pub.

One great example: The Golden Bee. This 56-year old gathering spot’s patina’d interior arrived at The Broadmoor in 1961 — a collection of panels and fixtures from a 19th-century English pub. Historians believe its roots go back to 17th century London where it was known as “The Golden Lion” on the Thames River. The pub’s rich wood paneling, trim and bar were later purchased by England’s famed Whitbread House Ale Co. Its owners envisioned selling the authentic pub to an American business as a way to publicize their product. The pub’s African mahogany wood interior was shipped to the U.S. where it ended up in a New York warehouse.

This is where the story takes a Colorado turn. In 1960, W&J Sloan – a design firm also based in New York City — assigned designer Leslie Dorsey to work on The Broadmoor’s new South Tower and International Center.

During the project he met hotel Chairman W. Thayer Tutt.

“There was an awkward 30-by-30-foot room behind the International Center — and my uncle consulted with Dorsey on what to do with the space,” says nephew Bill Tutt, who spent summers home from college working at the hotel. The 900-square-foot space wasn’t useable for storage, but it had direct access to a parking lot behind the IC. The area was determined a perfect spot for a pub, and the search began for décor. Within weeks, the dismantled English pub — a perfect fit for the small space — was purchased for $20,000. The hotel also agreed to serve Whitbread House Ale, and when The Golden Bee officially opened on May 27, 1961, employees dressed in Beefeaters outfits greeted customers.

W. Thayer Tutt also made sure visiting celebrities such as John Wayne, Bing Crosby and Jack Benny were inducted as honorary “Generals” of the “International Order of Rumanian Fusiliers.” Bill Tutt vividly recalls that each new celebrity

member was presented an inscribed tankard and a Napoleon-style hat with feather plumes. By 1964, “The Order of the Pewter Tankard,” was created.

Its members included local professional and military guests who purchased a personalized tankard, reserved solely for their use.

But it was music that propelled “The Bee,” as locals dubbed it, to new heights. Popular nightly sing-alongs in the bar showcased the talents of legendary ragtime pianists like Tom O’Boyle and Juneau Hattie — and spontaneous vocals of “Danny Boy” and college fight songs by the pub’s “happy” customers.

Over the years The Golden Bee has served an immeasurable number of yards and half-yards. The choice of beverages has also expanded. Today’s ale aficionados will find 12 different varieties on tap, ranging from Harp Irish Ale to Bass and Boddington pale ales, Guinness Irish Stout, and Strong Bow Dry Cider to half-and-half combinations like Black and Tan (Guinness and Bass), Black Velveteen (Guinness and Strong Bow) and more.

The interior was enlarged and an open-air patio added in 2013. Diners will find plenty of authentic English pub fare on the menu including Irish Bangers, Shepherd’s Pie, Chicken Pot Pie and ever-popular fish and chips.

Former Broadmoor Cooking School owner and “foodie,” Fran Folsom and her friends have frequented the gathering spot since the late 1960s. “You’d have to say The Golden Bee’s trademark is its wonderful cheese spread, served with crackers,” she says. “The food has evolved — and it’s very good. But I think it’s the beautiful interior, the ambience and the music that make ‘The Bee’ so memorable.”

Dating again after 50 years

n 85-year old man asks after his wife of 60 years dies, “how do I connect back in the game after six decades of married life?”

An 89-year old retired physician visits a therapist complaining, “my 70year old wife is going to divorce me if I don’t make love to her.”

You may smile when you read this and wonder, “what’s going on with these old codgers? It’s time for them to pack it in.”

It’s no longer the case that septuagenarians, octogenarians and nonagenarians are throwing in the towel on life.

The 85-year old who wants to connect back in the game realizes that he still has a bit of road in front of him and would like to find a new partner with whom to travel on it. As a recent widower, he must recognize that he cannot compare a new partner to his deceased wife. And what he is looking for today is different from what he looked for as a young man.

The 89-year old physician had to learn that while he may not be able to engage in vigorous all-night lovemaking, he could learn the art of erotic massage; he became a great lover instead of just a sexual athlete.

Aging is a time of discovery. It’s a time to learn new things rather than moan about what we no longer can do.

As we age, we learn we do not have to give up the things we love; we just may have to learn how to do them differently.

At 79, I may no longer be engaged in combative martial arts (I earned a black belt at 70) but I can do Tai Chi. I cannot do the jitterbug but I can do a rumba.

A friend of mine never learned to ride a bicycle. But at the age of 80, he and his 75-year old wife bought tricycles to cruise around their retirement village complex. They are getting more exercise today than they got when they were half their age.

Dating and lovemaking are

different when you are 60, 70 and 80 than when you are 20, 30 or 40.

Instead of it being a performance game, it is a quality experience. It’s an opportunity to meet new people. The focus is more on the human connection than on looks, stamina and money.

Age is a time to appreciate the gift of life rather than racing through it.

When we are young, we cannot wait to reach the next age. When we are older, we want to slow down the clock. We want to learn how to

appreciate each moment. Appreciating the journey, marveling in discovery and developing the fine art of lingering – this is what aging is all about. It would be wise to pursue connecting with a new partner with the same mind-set.

Months back, Towne put his computer wizardry skills to good use and donated his time to refurbish nearly a few hundred computers for a Colorado Springs service group which were donating the computers to a school in Mexico.

“That kept me busy for a few months. It started it out a little thing, and then they said ‘Would you do all of these?’ I said yes,” Towne said. “I loaded them up with Windows 7 and sent them on their way. I just love working on computers.”

Towne graduated from Northeastern University in Boston with an electrical engineering degree in 1966. He started working with computers in 1969 as

an electrical engineer.

Town found himself liking the software side of computers much more than engineering.

“I started writing computer software. You get to see the results of your effort almost immediately and I loved that; the fact I got to see the results,” he said.

“If you’re an engineer you’re doing a small piece of the puzzle.”

Towne said he’s amazed at today’s computer technology, but it definitely comes in handy for his business.

“When I work with a new customer, I go into Google and top in the word love and there are 7 billion hits in .74 seconds. I can appreciate it. I just can’t understand it how they can do that,” he

mentioned. “Google is my savior. I repair just about anything with Google. Type in an error message and you can find a dozen blogs that will tell you how to fix it.”

While he’s not getting as much business as he’d like, Towne really enjoys helping seniors. And they, in turn, spread the word and tell their friends about him. As long as he gets to continue tinkering with computers, Towne’s a happy man.

“I can’t necessarily tell you what I had for breakfast but I really remember computer stuff,” he said.

AARP Foundation offers free tax assistance

Again this year, AARP Foundation is providing free tax assistance and preparation for taxpayers with low to moderate income through the AARP Foundation TaxAide program.

AARP Foundation TaxAide, in its 49th year, is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to the older population.

You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service.

In 2015, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide had 35,000 volunteers at more than 5,000 sites across the U.S. They provided 2.6 million people with free tax help. Taxpayers who used AARP Foundation Tax-Aide received $1.3 billion in income tax refunds and more than $228 million in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITCs).

Last year, Colorado AARP Tax-Aide volunteers helped more than 33,000 people file their federal, state and local tax returns. The program is offered at approximately 59 sites in Colorado, including senior centers, libraries and other convenient locations.

From its beginning in the days of the Wild West to Dad Bruce’s takedown of the “Miami Gang,” the Gardens have been the site of many fascinating stories. Beau Schriever and Deborah Harrison will share their discoveries about a run-down restaurant that was revealed to have a brilliant history.

Deborah Harrison is a Manitou historian and resident of 30 years who has written a couple of books about Manitou Springs. She has served on

the boards of the local Historic Preservation Commission, the Manitou Springs Heritage Center and is currently Vice President of the Mineral Springs Foundation. She also appreciates researching local history with her closest collaborator; her husband Beau.

Beau Schriever grew up exploring the Pikes Peak regions’ historic towns and resources. After 15 years working in the Southwest and Southern Plains, he returned home in 2010 when hired as a contract archaeologist for Fort Carson. He also collaborates on research related to local historic resources and is part of a research group creating an online encyclopedia of Maker’s Marks found on bottles in the United States.

Guests are welcome! Membership in the Pikes Peak Posse of the Westerners is open to all individuals with an interest in Western history.

Victor Lowell Thomas Museum to honor donors through fundraising effort For the first time since the 1950s, the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum has a heating system, and that means that interior restoration of the building is now possible. This winter’s project is to refurbish an upper floor room into the Hunter Mining History Library. This library of books, publications, and documents will honor and include items donated by several individuals.

The library is named for Ed and Cherry Hunter, who donated thousands of books and documents, maps, and artifacts, as well a large collection of mine safety lamps to the museum in 2013. Staff and volunteers have completed archiving Ed and Cherry’s large collection of mining memorabilia gathered and collected by the couple during their years in the mining industry. When Cherry died in 2004 and Ed in 2013, at their request no memorials were held.

This library will be a chance for their friends to commemorate their enormous dedication to mining history and their donation to the communities in which they lived and the lives they touched so deeply.

The library is also being funded in honor of attorney Brian Geddes whose family donated to the library several of his law and mining books in 2011.

Geddes is well known in the district and greatly enjoyed collecting Victor & Cripple Creek history.

The project will also house some of the books from Victor’s hometown notable Lowell Thomas and family, as well as Lowell Thomas Junior who died in October 2016.

The museum collection includes most every title

the elder Thomas wrote, his radio and broadcast transcripts from 1934 to 1975, and several first edition books that were donated by the University of Denver Sturm Law School in 2015. Some of Dr. A.C. Denman’s medical books will also be located in the library.

These items and others will be housed in the library, which is the first step toward providing a public research component to the museum experience.

The museum board also has plans in the future to install a temperature and humidity controlled archive room in the basement of the museum to house more sensitive items from these collections as well as the original historic newspapers that are the treasure-trove of Victor history.

Donations from this fundraising effort will be used to rehab the library room and purchase bookshelves and other amenities in the library. Thus far, the museum has earmarked over $3,000 donated

previously by individuals who wanted to commemorate the Hunters, Geddes, Denman, and the Thomas father and son.

A challenge for the fundraiser has been issued by the Southern Teller County Focus Group, of whom Ed Hunter was a founding member and fervent supporter. The STCFG is seeking partners who will match their kick-start donation of $2,500.

Total estimated cost of the project is $48,000.

Donations to this non-profit project are 100% tax deductible. No donation is too small; those who donate will have their names included on a memorial plaque that will hang in the library.

CSFD responds to fire at Satellite Hotel At 4:36 p.m. on Jan. 25, the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a report of a fire on the third floor of the Satellite Hotel.

Fire companies arrived within four minutes of the call and made their way to the third floor where they experienced “heavy smoke.” Smoke was the biggest concern for residents as firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire confining it to the clothes dryer.

Firefighters immediately went to work assisting residents on the third floor protecting them from exposure to smoke. Several residents remained safe in their apartments while others were escorted by firefighters to an assembly area established on the first floor.

CSFD fire investigators were called out to the scene and after a thorough investigation the cause of this fire has been determined to be accidental. Due to quick action by Colorado Springs Fire Department the overall save/loss data calculations indicate that fire crews were able to save $50,665,847 in structure with a loss of only $7,753.

No lives were lost and one resident was evaluated by the CSFD medical team and released.

Valentine’s Day has become weird

By Elaine Rodino, PhD. Seems to me that Valentine’s Day has become weird.

I’m not really sure how this all got started. Do you know? Why is it that the guy is always expected to buy the roses, the romantic card, or the jewelry? What expectations are on the gal in this process?

It’s the guy that traditionally asks, “Will you be my Valentine?” Oh My!!

What if the gal asks that question?

What if the female buys the long stem roses, the romantic card, and that special man gift? How did things go so astray from the way they started way back when we were kids?

Really now ... What are you all thinking?

Valentine Cards are available for everyone and for every possible relationship in our life. This actually begins in pre-school. Classmates give each other Valentines, the teacher gets Valentines, the teacher gives all the kiddies Valentines ... etc.

Many children get Valentines from their parents and they often give their

parents Valentines well into their adulthood.

So, this all seems very natural. It begins in a natural way. At the pre-school level it indicates an acknowledgement of Valentine’s Day itself. Those little cards could just as well say “Happy Lincoln’s Birthday.”

The children simply like giving these greeting cards and receiving them.

As we grow up we realize that Valentine’s Day is all about LOVE. Seems too, that as we grow up, we continue to feel just fine giving our auntie, our grandma and our parents Valentine cards…but as for our friends ... wait a minute….that gets weird!

Weird. Did I say weird? Well just think! As an adult, if you really like someone, and it’s Valentine’s Day, people become anxious about expressing their feelings through a Valentine’s Card.

Now that certainly seems weird.

Especially after just noticing how smoothly things went when we were all kids. When and why does that change occur? Who made the new

rules?

Why can’t there be a continuation of the flow of good feelings: “like” feelings and a sense of love communicated with everyone? Kids, teens, adults and 50+ people can all communicate their like of another and show it with a card, a flower or flowers, or a special gift.

Valentine’s Day can be a day that we’re all allowed to express our good feelings toward someone who is special to us. No pressure to do this;

just the good feeling of doing it, and that’s not weird.

‘Why Are My Keys in the Freezer?’ and other questions about memory, aging

I know I came in this room for something, now what was it?

Where did I put my glasses?

What was the name of that actor, you know the one, he starred in that movie with whatshername…?

Do these questions sound familiar? If they do, the next question you may have asked yourself is, “Am I losing it?” You wonder if these “senior moments” reflect normal aging or if they might be signs of dementia. So you worry.

Many factors can cause fluctuations in thought processes as you age, including fatigue, hunger, stress, attention, and emotions. It is typical to misplace objects occasionally (and don’t your children do that too?), forget names, have more “tip-of-the-tongue” moments, and require more effort to learn new information.

Signs that may indicate concern, however, include behavior that disrupts daily activities (such as getting lost in your own home or leaving the stove on); changes in judgment, planning, and problem-solving (such as falling for phone scams or being unable to follow a recipe); confusion with time and place; problems with speaking and writing (such as trouble with word finding); misplacing things in unusual locations (such as leaving a jar of mayonnaise in the bathroom); social withdrawal; and changes in mood and personality (becoming confused, suspicious, fearful, or angry).

Ten to 20 percent of adults aged 65 and older may have mild cognitive impairment (MCI), characterized by a slight but noticeable and measurable decline in cognitive abilities, including memory and thinking skills.

For example, it’s normal to forget where you left your checkbook; it’s not normal to forget where you bank. It’s normal to forget where you parked your car at the mall; it’s not normal to forget you drove to the mall or have a car.

Ten to 20 percent of adults aged 65 and older may have mild cognitive impairment (MCI), characterized by a slight but noticeable and measurable decline in cognitive abilities, including memory and thinking skills. These behaviors are serious enough to be noticed but not severe enough to interfere with daily life or independent function.

MCI increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia.

It is important to remember that although some brain changes are inevitable in later years, dementia is not a part of normal aging. Risk factors for dementia include stroke, head injuries, chronic alcoholism, infections such as meningitis, and mental health issues such as major depressive disorder. Modifiable lifestyle risk factors are physical inactivity, diabetes, obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

So what can you do? Physical activity, a healthy diet, stress management, and social interaction benefit the mind as well as the body. In addition, early detection can ensure maximum benefit from available treatments and allow time for future planning.

The Memory Clinic at the UCCS Aging Center provides screenings for adults 55-plus who may want to establish a baseline measurement, are worried about their own memory, or are concerned about a loved one. Following the 45- to 60-minute assessment, a staff psychologist can tell you if your cognitive abilities seem normal for your age, if clear impairment is present, or if further evaluation is needed. Clients are screened on a variety of measures and results are compared to age-matched peers.

The Aging Center is the only mental health clinic in the Pikes Peak region exclusively focused on older adults. A nonprofit clinic that operates as part of the Lane Center HealthCircle at UCCS, the Aging Center provides individual, group, marital, and family psychotherapy as well as assessments and consultations to adults 55-plus and caregivers.

Services are provided on a sliding scale or for Medicare reimbursement by graduate students and licensed psychologists with expertise in gerontology.

Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care President Martha Barton to retire Martha M. Barton, President of Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care announced Jan. 12 that she will retire from her position June 1, 2017, after 30 years at the helm of the organization. Barton will also step down from her position as President and CEO of Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation.

Founded in 1980, Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care is the largest and only not-for-profit hospice and palliative care provider in El Paso County. Barton says, “Over more than three decades, it has been an honor and privilege to care for more than 150,000 patients and families experiencing the last phase of life.”

During Barton’s tenure, the organization has seen dramatic growth. It provides outpatient hospice services in patients’ homes and extended care facilities throughout the county and also delivers care at the 16-bed Peak Hospice Unit at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.

The inpatient unit is licensed and operated by Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care independent of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services.

Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care services also include a robust palliative care and consultation program, its own pharmacy providing

specialized pharmaceutical care for its patients, and comprehensive grief support for adults and children. The organization also participates at the highest level in We Honor Veterans, a national program jointly developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

weaters and scarves aren’t the only ways to brace yourself against blustery weather. There’s no time like winter to putter in the kitchen, where the cozy heat from the stove and the aromas of mouthwatering dishes can warm you from the inside out.

Grilled Citrus Rosemary Catfish

Servings: 4 Citrus Sauce: 1 lime, juice and zest only 1 lemon, zest only 1 orange, zest only 6 ounces pineapple juice 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped 1/4 teaspoon salt Catfish: 4 U.S. farm-raised catfish fillets 2 lemons salt, to taste freshly ground black pepper, to taste Heat grill.

To make citrus sauce: In small saucepan, combine all sauce ingredients. Bring to boil; reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes.

To make catfish: Place catfish in shallow dish and squeeze 1/2 fresh lemon over each fillet. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Let rest 5 minutes.

Grill catfish fillets, skin-side-up, 3-4 minutes. Flip over and grill 2-3 more minutes.

Transfer catfish to serving plates and spoon warmed citrus sauce over fillets.

Chicken and Salsa Verde

Chicken: 1 fresh free-range organic chicken (4 pounds) sea salt, to taste freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 lemon Salsa Verde: 1/4 cup capers in salt 4 anchovy filets 3 cloves garlic 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley 1/2 cup chopped arugula

Black Skillet Beef with Greens and Red Potatoes 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1/4 cup chopped tarragon 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives 1/4 cup chopped fresh sage 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 teaspoon sea salt To make chicken: Heat oven to 450 F. Wash chicken in hot water. Dry with paper towels.

Using kitchen shears, cut out backbone of chicken and remove any fat (this can be added to chicken stock). Using heavy chef’s knife, cut out breastbone. Season halves with sea salt and black pepper.

Place chicken halves, skin side up, on two sizzle platters and dab with olive oil. Cut lemon in half and place 1 half, cut side down, next to chicken on each platter.

Roast chicken 35 minutes, basting every 10 minutes. When done, remove chicken to platter and pour off excess fat. Cut each breast in half and cut the thigh from the leg.

Serve with salsa verde (recipe below) and garnish with roasted lemon.

To make salsa verde: Soak capers in cold water 1 hour then drain.

Soak anchovies in cold water 15 minutes then pat dry and remove bones.

Using mortar and pestle, smash capers, anchovies and garlic, until smooth, then transfer to large bowl.

Add all herbs and olive oil.

Season with sea salt.

1 pound top round beef 1 tablespoon paprika 1 1/2 teaspoons oregano 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/8 teaspoon red pepper 1/8 teaspoon dry mustard nonstick spray 8 red-skinned potatoes, halved 3 cups onion, finely chopped 2 cups beef broth 2 large garlic cloves, minced 2 large carrots, peeled and cut into 2 1/2-inch strips 2 bunches (1/2 pound each) mustard, kale or turnip greens, stems removed, coarsely torn Partially freeze beef. Thinly slice

across grain into strips 1/8-inch thick and 3 inches wide. Trim away visible fat.

Combine paprika, oregano, chili powder, garlic powder, black pepper, red pepper and dry mustard. Coat strips of meat with spice mixture.

Spray large, heavy skillet with nonstick spray. Heat pan over high heat.

Add meat; cook, stirring constantly, 5 minutes.

Add potatoes, onion, broth and garlic. Cook over medium heat, covered, 20 minutes.

Stir in carrots; lay greens over top and cook, covered, until carrots are tender, about 15 minutes.

Serve in large serving bowl with crusty bread for dunking.

Entertainment during the show will be provided

Tours of Highlands Mansion and Molly Brown House. First enjoy a guided tour of the beautiful Highlands Ranch Mansion which was owned by various prominent Coloradoans, and learn about the history of Highlands Ranch. After the mansion tour we will have lunch on your own at the Corner Bakery. Then you will experience the life of “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” as we have a guided tour of her house in Denver. This trip does require a fair amount of walking. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 7. $30.

Mystery Trip. What do snow boots, a lawn chair, and a bathing suit have in common? Join us for this mystery trip and you will find out!

Dear Marci, I’m not satisfied with my Medicare Advantage Plan, and I’d like to switch either to another plan or go back to Original Medicare. When is it permissible for me to make a change?

– Winifred (Pearland, Texas) Dear Winifred, There are several conditions and time periods under which you can change your Medicare Advantage Plan.

If you want to switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another, you can switch plans during Fall Open Enrollment, which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year, with your new coverage taking effect on January 1. Research shows that people with Part D or Medicare Advantage Plans could lower their costs by shopping among plans each year. For example, a plan in your area may cover the drugs you take with fewer restrictions and charge you less.

Each fall, your Medicare Advantage Plan should send you an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) or Evidence of Coverage (EOC) notice explaining any plan changes for the coming year. Review this notice to understand your plan’s costs, covered services, and rules. If you choose a new Medicare Advantage Plan, review the costs associated with that plan for the coming year.

You may want to check the availability of plans in your area by calling 1-800-MEDICARE or going

Once you select a plan that meets your health care coverage needs, it is a good idea to reach out to the plan to verify that the costs and coverage data you researched is current.

If you find that you are not satisfied with your Medicare Advantage Plan (whether or not you enrolled in a new plan during Fall Open Enrollment), you can disenroll from that plan and switch to Original Medicare during the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period. This period runs from Jan. 1 to Feb. 14 each year. Changes made during this period are effective the first of the following month. For example, if you switched from a Medicare Advantage Plan to Original Medicare and a stand-alone Part D plan on February 10, your new coverage would begin March 1.

Under certain circumstances, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to change your health and/or drug plan outside of the usual enrollment or disenrollment periods. If you get an SEP, your new coverage will usually start the first of the month after your sign up for or disenroll from your Medicare Advantage Plan. Here are two examples of when you would qualify for an SEP: If your Medicare Advantage Plan leaves your area or you move out of your plan’s service area, you can switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan or to Original Medicare.

You have one SEP per calendar year to switch into a five-star Medicare Advantage Plan from your current plan. You must be eligible to join the plan, i.e., you live in the plan’s service area.
