Day 1 - Depart Colorado Springs for Lincoln, Nebraska. We’ll stop in Ogallala, Nebraska for lunch and visit Front Street, a beautiful replicated block of the old west. Ogallala was the end of the cattle trail, where Texas cowboys drove their herds to meet the Union Pacific Railroad. Overnight in Lincoln.

Day 2 - Our destination for today is Moline, Illinois. Along the way, we’ll stop in Leighton, Iowa, for lunch and a guided tour of the Tassel Ridge Winery and vineyards. We’ll dine in their greenhouse, overlooking the beautiful vineyards. After lunch and our wine tasting, we’ll tour the winery and, if weather permits, their vineyards, as well. We’ll continue on to Moline, where we’ll enjoy a dinner cruise aboard the beautiful paddlewheel boat, the Celebration Belle.

Day 3 - This morning, we’ll tour the Isabel Bloom studio. Isabel was a well known sculpture artist who created beautiful designs of animals and children. During our tour we’ll have behind-the-scenes access to every step of this loving process and discover why her beautiful sculptures continue to be treasured to this day. After our studio tour, we move on to a tour of the John Deere Pavilion and learn about John Deere, the man, who used his skills and knowledge as a blacksmith to change the course of farming. We’ll experience the machines up close along with the history and innovation of this remarkable company. We continue on to the Amana Colonies, a National Historic Landmark which was formed in 1856 when German Pietists came to the United States to escape religious persecution in their homeland. Their 26,000 acre colony still stands to this day. We’ll spend the remainder of the day here, complete with an in-depth tour, wine tasting, lunch and dinner served in the local traditions, with plenty of time for shopping the many lovely boutique shops.

Day 4 - This morning we make our way to Pella, Iowa, for their annual Tulip Festival! With over 200,000 tulips in bloom we’ll feel as though we’ve traveled back in time as we see thousands of local residents dress in Dutch attire to celebrate their Dutch heritage. While here, we will see windmills, antique autos, parades, quilts, Pella’s sunken garden, antiques, historic villages, old grist mill, Wyatt Earp house, Woodworking, Blacksmithing, Spinning, and much, much more!

Day 5 - This morning is free time on your own at the Tulip Festival. You’ll have an opportunity to taste delicious homemade baked goods, browse the numerous boutique shops filled with imports, or roam Klokkenspel Plaza, boasting thousands of colorful tulips and deft murals. After lunch, we say goodbye to Pella and head towards Kansas City, where we’ll overnight.

Day 6 - After breakfast we’ll head to the National WWI Museum and memorial. This is a fabulous museum dedicated to the 4.7 million men who fought for our country. We’ll enjoy a guided tour, as well as free time to explore. Your ticket also includes the Liberty Memorial Tower, which rises 268 feet and offers an open-air observation deck for breathtaking views of the Kansas City skyline. After lunch at the museum, we’ll continue on to the Russell Stover outlet store, selling the entire line of Russell Stover candies. You’ll find something to satisfy every sweet tooth, including hand dipped ice cream! We’ll overnight in Salina, Kansas.

Day 7 - Heading for home, we’ll stop at the historic Cathedral of the Plains, located in Victoria, Kansas. Dating back to 1921, this lovely church has an interesting history which we’ll learn all about from our tour guide. After lunch in Colby, it’s home to Colorado Springs.

More to a mouth than a smile

Happy New Year! The fresh slate of a whole new year ahead can be inspiring to some, while intimidating to others. We recommend making just a few, measurable and attainable goals. Sticking with a smaller number of attainable goals helps to encourage you to keep making improvements when you experience success from those goals. We’d love to help you make improving your oral health a focus in 2020! We’ve put together a few relevant resolutions for you to consider.

If you have any missing teeth, resolve to get them replaced in 2020. Missing teeth have far-reaching ramifications on many aspects of your health. Studies have shown a link between missing teeth and poor nutrition in senior citizens. Areas without teeth lead to bone loss in your jaw, and eventually a noticeable “caving in” as surrounding teeth tilt toward the gap. As teeth move, your bite changes and can cause headaches or injury to other teeth.

Gaps between teeth can also harbor bacteria which infect your gums. As

your immune system weakens over time, those bacteria can cause inflammation in other parts of your body. Often losing one tooth leads to a cascade of problems with other teeth and results in multiple lost teeth. Another resolution you might consider is switching up your toothpaste.

your teeth from decay and sensitivity.

Some toothpastes may have damaging abrasives that are too harsh, especially for senior citizen’s teeth which thin and become more brittle with time.

Additionally, many senior citizens take medications with the side effect of dry mouth. If you experience dry mouth, talk with your dentist for solutions.

Resolve to combat dry mouth through changing up your oral care routine, considering switching medications, and drinking plenty of water. Keeping your mouth constantly wet is an important part of oral health. Saliva helps to wash away bacteria and food debris.

Saliva also contains fluoride to remineralize your teeth. Also, saliva helps to heal wounds and kill bacteria.

We’ve also made some new year resolutions this year! Our biggest one is to serve more patients. Retirement means more canvas time for artist Karen Storm

Karen Storm is a successful, award-winning, nationally-recognized artist, but that isn’t what prompts her to spend up to 30 hours a week painting at her easel.

“I’m grateful for the recognition,” she said, “But what keeps me going is being curious about how to express myself better. (Painting) is like learning a language. It’s a communication skill I want to keep developing.”

She considers art as creating ties. “Art is a vehicle for connecting people,” she said. “Whether its music or dance or theatre it’s a way to connect with others. I use art to develop my voice and having others hear my voice through my paintings.”

Although she said it’s nice to know that her work hangs in people’s homes and in galleries, that’s not what motivates her. It’s more basic: “I

enjoy painting and developing as a painter,” she explained.

Storm was an art educator for 27 years, 17 of which were spent in Woodland Park. Initially, she taught at the secondary level in Colorado Springs. “I like to say I worked my way up to the elementary level. That’s where I made a difference as a teacher where I could get the students off to an artful start.”

Since retiring in 2011, she has been able to commit to art in a way that wasn’t possible when teaching full time, and earlier when raising a family.

“Back then it was either sell the kids or sell my art,” she joked. “I chose to keep my kids.” It wasn’t until her younger son left home that she had more time to paint.

She turned to oils, she said, because “I felt like oils would be a really big challenge and I knew I would need a lot of dedicated time to find my voice in oil paint.” She also sculpts, draws and used to hand dye silk to create wearable art. She paints land-

scapes, figures, animals and flora.

Storm and her husband enjoy traveling. Whether it’s the Galapagos Islands, Vietnam, northern California or the Colorado mountains, she usually paints or sketches wherever she is. She also takes a lot of photos to serve as later inspiration or reminders.

Her work has been featured in the annual Governor’s Art Show for several years, including 2016 and 2018 when she received Special Merit awards, however, it was the 2019 exhibit that garnered the Best of Show award.

“This year I’ve been blessed with what I consider really good judges,” she said laughing. On a more serious note she added, “The Best of Show was a highlight of my career as an artist. The work there is at a very high level and being part of that is something I’m really grateful for.”

“I just want to be a better painter.”

More specifically, she plans to work on her color harmony and edge work.

“The biggest thing is to stay curious about what you can do through your craft and artistic expression,” she explained. “If you lose that curiosity, well, I don’t know.”

In addition to academic degrees, Storm has continued her education working with other artists, including Jill Carver, Chuck Mardosz, Martha Mans to name a few. Among the artists she considers influencing her work are Joaquin Sorolla, Richard Schmidt, Edgar Payne and John Singer Sargent.

“I would like people to know there are a lot of local artists doing extraordinary work,” she said. “Just look around Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs. You don’t have to go far outside our community to find beautiful work being done.”

When not painting in her home studio, or walking her dog in the Garden of the Gods, Storm said she spends time keeping up with the business side, which includes entering shows, maintaining her website and social media presence.

Carson combines love of art and cars

aven Carson lives to create. The 76-year-old, who’s worked as a commercial artist, commercial photographer and architectural illustrator, thrives on all things art.

“I sculpt, I do leatherwork, jewelry, furniture … you name it,” he said.

He and his wife Mary have no need to purchase decorations for their Briargate home, as Haven’s paintings, sculptures and other creations decorate the walls and tables.

The living room itself is a small art museum of sorts.

Along with art, Haven has a passion for cars. Growing up in Michigan, he attended the College of Creative Studies after high school and learned how to be an automobile designer. He went on to work for General Motors.

“They stuck me on hubcaps and door handles,” he said.

That wasn’t exactly what Haven had in mind for a career, so he moved to California and enrolled in the Brooks Institute. There, he studied commercial photography. He worked as a commercial photographer in Los Angeles, before moving to London, England, where he worked for advertising agencies as a freelancer for four years.

“The art directors would give you an impossible task, but you had to do it,” he added.

When he returned to the U.S., Haven decided to hitch hike around the U.S. He ventured around 48 states in 10 months.

“That was dangerous stuff,” he said.

“After 10 months, I said, ‘Hell with this.’ I landed in San Francisco, got a job at a color lab and taught at an academy of art.”

Haven’s adventures then led him to Park City, Utah, where he got a job with a guy who was an architectural illustrator and created detailed, artist renderings of homes and buildings.

“One day, the guy quit and walked out.

He never came back. I said to myself, ‘I’m either unemployed or I’m the new boss,’ so I decided I was going to be the new boss. One thing led to another, I had every job in Park City – all the ski resorts, all the condo projects, all the restaurants, anything that needed a commercial photographer or commercial artist. It was great.

“For four years, I skied my ass off, I had fun, married, had a child. Moved back down to Orange County, divorced, picked up another job as an illustrator. I found my own clients and kept my business going for another 25 years as an illustrator.”

CARS/from page 8 Haven discovered another art outlet that would lead to a stream of income – designing maquettes for corporations. A maquette is a scale model or rough draft of an unfinished sculpture. Corporations would pay for Haven’s designs and have 20-foot, abstract sculptures built and placed in front of their buildings.

Maquettes can be found around Haven’s home and in his small art studio behind the house. The studio echoes just what Haven is about.

Model airplanes hang from the ceiling in deliberate angles, precisely-cut pieces of leather for a purse he’s making for his wife sit on one table and model cars of his favorite exotic automobiles sit about his desk.

“I can’t afford the real cars, so I build models,” he said.

While living in Orange County, California, Haven attended “Coffee and Car” gatherings on Saturday mornings, where owners of rare and exotic cars would gather for a few hours and show off their rides.

“Five hundred cars would show up for two hours,” Haven added. “I got to know people and they hired me to shoot photos of their cars.”

That’s been Haven’s side business for the past dozen years. He shoots photos of cars, touches up the photo in Photoshop and adds snazzy backgrounds. But Haven doesn’t shoot just any car.

“Cars are in my blood. Nice cars.

Rare cars. Exotic cars,” he said. “I don’t give a (expletive) about Mustangs, I could care less about Camaros and pickup trucks do nothing for me. Give me 250 Ferrari GT or a Bugatti or a Porsche.”

Since moving to Colorado Springs three years ago, Haven discovered there weren’t as many rare and exotic cars in town to shoot. He still photographs cars when he can, but has also been asked to shoot private jets and planes for clients as well.

Getting back to that art studio in the backyard, it’s Haven’s home away from home.

“It basically says who I am. I have hobbies. Whatever I feel like doing, I do it because I have the rest of my life to live here. I can’t just sit and do nothing,” he said. “I’m 76 years old. I don’t feel it. I just can’t sit still. I have to be doing something or creating something.”

The Mining Exchange Building at Pikes Peak and Nevada Avenue opened to the public on Jan. 15, 1902, nearly two years after the groundbreaking. The building was constructed by mining legend and philanthropist Winfield Scott Stratton. It hosted offices and the stock exchange for Cripple Creek and Victor gold mines.

During construction, a massive boiler was ceremoniously delivered and installed by St. Johns and Barnes, a Colorado Springs heating and plumbing company.

both their needs — letting go of getting their own way. They want to be together, and each suggestion is measured against the interests of both.

This process says, “I love and respect you and care enough to listen to what you want and why.” The more this message is conveyed, the more willing people are to work at solving conflicts. We can begin to see there’s a way both people “win.”

Nothing about this model is quick.

It has to be learned and practiced, and it’s nearly always challenging. But nothing about fighting and bad feelings is desirable either. As John Lennon’s song says, “War is over, if you want it ...”

Four ways to alleviate senior loneliness, depression mobility, retirement and other reasons leading to higher rates of senior social isolation. Studies also show that loneliness is a huge risk factor for depression, heightening the sense of unhappiness and worthlessness.

Mental Health America lists some startling facts about seniors and depression in the United States: • 1 out of 17 Americans aged 65+ suffer from some form of depression • Seniors aged 65+ account for 20 percent of all suicide deaths in the United States • Approximately 68 percent of Americans aged 65 and over know little or nothing about depression As we age, sometimes changes occur that might cause us to experience stress and sadness. The transition from work to retirement, the death of a loved one, or the diagnosis of an illness, can all make us feel uneasy, anxious, unhappy and contribute to depression over time.

Symptoms associated with depression may include insomnia and anxiety. It feels like a hug or a cuddle, which makes your brain physically produce serotonin, which promotes a better mood and a sense of calm. According to Healthline.com, ‘The blankets also simulate deep pressure touch (DPT), a type of therapy that uses firm, hands-on pressure to reduce chronic stress and high levels of anxiety’.

1 pound rainbow carrots, trimmed and peeled 1 lemon, juice only, divided 1/4 c finely chopped fresh herbs such as dill, mint or cilantro, divided 1 1/2 c plain Greek yogurt Heat oven to 425 F. In large bowl, whisk 2 tablespoons harissa and 2 tablespoons oil. Add onions and cauliflower; toss to combine. Spread vegetable mixture in single layer on 17-by-12-inch foil-lined rimmed baking sheet.

In same bowl, whisk remaining harissa, 2 tablespoons oil, 1 cup marinara sauce, cumin, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Add chicken; toss with tongs until well coated. Arrange chicken atop vegetables on baking sheet. Bake 50-55 minutes, or until chicken is deep golden brown and internal temperature reaches 165 F. Use vegetable peeler to create long ribbons of carrots. In bowl, toss carrots with 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 2 tablespoons chopped herbs and remaining oil, salt and pepper. In separate bowl, mix yogurt, remaining lemon juice and remaining herbs.

Serve each chicken thigh with roasted vegetables, dollop of herbed yogurt, carrot mixture and 1/4 cup warmed marinara sauce.

How your smartphone may help you keep your resolutions dozen languages, or Memrise, which features user-generated lessons, are a great way to fit in bite-sized practice sessions throughout the day.

hether you want to read more or spend less, reduce your weight or increase your steps, mobile applications, or apps, can help you turn your New Year’s resolutions into lasting habits.

To get started, head to the App Store (if you’re an iPhone user) or the Google Play store (if you have an Android) to download the apps that match your goals. And remember, persistence is key — experts say it takes at least three weeks to make a new habit stick.

“You have to build up to your goal, otherwise you end up sabotaging yourself,” says New York-based life coach Sharon Good. Apps, Good says, can help you gain traction in a few ways: some ask you to log your daily progress toward a specific achievement, while others connect you to a community of users. They can also offer creative ways to achieve goals you might otherwise avoid (for instance, by letting you practice a new language from home, rather than traveling across town for a weekly class).

Users compile reading lists, review and rate the books they finish and scroll through customized recommendations. If you prefer audiobooks, consider the Librivox app, which offers unlimited access to more than 50,000 works of fiction and nonfiction in the public domain.

Learn a language

Whether you’re looking to pick up a new language or brush up on the basics of one you learned years ago, apps can help you boost your fluency and your brain health at the same time (one study, for example, found that learning a second language as an adult delayed the onset of dementia by four to five years). And if you find yourself losing steam, don’t panic. “Very often when you’re making a change, you’re going to lose consistency for a while,” Good says. “Don’t let that discourage you.

PPACG’s Barker thrives in serving seniors For Life After 50

C

onnector. That’s what Jody Barker is most proud to be called.

Connecting seniors and families to services, or providers and agencies to collaborate, is what drives him every day.

Barker recently took on his newest role in senior services, by becoming the director of the Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging (PPAAA), a division of the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments. The PPAAA administers the Older Americans Act and Older Coloradoan Act funds and distributes those through the three-county area served by this agency, which includes Park, Teller and El Paso counties.

“It’s a privilege to now work alongside so many colleagues I’ve collaborated with over the years, as mutual referral sources and community partners,” he explained.

When Barker began working with the Senior Times (now Life After 50) in 1998, he was continually amazed at the amount of services available to seniors and their families. He began to understand there were passionate people, doing incredible work, for those clients. As he got deeper into the senior services community however, he realized he could be a connector.

“I realized I was good at making those connections for people, and they followed up with whomever I referred them to for services.” he explained.

“There was a level of trust placed in what I shared.” He continued, “I then realized, that was what drove me to gather more information, more connections, and understand more about the services this community offered our seniors.”

As his roles changed in the community, creating his own senior-services resource agency, then some time with a homecare agency, he says his experience and those

connections continued to serve him many partnering agencies and well. “I realized, with those conneccolleagues he has worked with over tions, I was becoming a resource to the years. seniors and their families.”

Those who suffer from loneliness and depression have very low levels of serotonin. Having coffee out in the sun for 20 minutes allows our skin to absorb UV rays that promote Vitamin D and serotonin. However, aging seniors might have mobility limitations that lead to an insufficient amount of exposure in the sun.

Gratitude Practice Apps or Meditation

There are many apps on phones and tablets that serve as a gratitude journal (Gratitude). Journaling and meditating at the start or end of a day allows us to be mindful and grateful of our life. We can think about the people and things we value and how much we can appreciate life. It helps boost serotonin when you’re feeling distressed. Reminiscing and reflecting upon our past achievements and victories can give us a serotonin boost, which is a happy chemical in our brain!

Their trained volunteers specialize in offering a caring ear and having a friendly conversation with depressed older adults.’

Seek Him first

By Kay Owen-Larson “But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Mt. 6:25-33 When we read these words, it is easier to read and say them than it is to really live them.

One of the lessons I have learned this week is to learn to live by this verse.

To aim at and to strive after God’s Kingdom and His righteousness, or doing what is right in His sight and what He thinks is right, not what I think is right. (In order to live in the Kingdom as Kingdom kids, we first need to know the King and what He provides for us.)

Righteousness & justice are the foundations of His throne. To truly follow these foundational truths, we are going in the opposite direction of virtually the whole world except those who have truly made the same decision. (Psalm 89:14) An intentional decision must be made in our life — when we read — really read a scripture, what do we do with it? Do we make that intentional

decision to do what the Word says?

Like reading Mt. 6, I think it’s more important now than ever before that we learn to make these intentional decisions.

But even in our weaknesses, he is made strong. (2Cor. 12:10) Even when we have difficulty acting on His Word-He makes up the difference. In the Old Testament, God simply multiplied four men’s footsteps to sound like a might army.

There were thousands of troops running for their lives, scared to death, thinking they were being attacked by a massive army when in fact, it was just four people. Why?! God made up the difference!

He knows how to make up the difference, He can multiply our strength, our talents, our influence, our income — any need we have, we don’t need to figure it out, all we have to do is go back to Mat. 6 and trust him.

That is my prayer for you in the coming New Year.

ur cat Hope came to us as a feral cat after we befriended her mother, also a feral we named Sparkle.

Sparkle had two black and white kittens that she introduced to our little feeding station on the front porch shortly after they were weaned. We named them Glimmer and Hope but Hope was the one who took to us and came around twice a day for a little food. We never saw Glimmer or Sparkle after that.

We had her spade then eventually she adopted us and has been the sweetest cat. Her and our little Chihuahua Ozzie, play together in the backyard every morning and and is 100 percent domesticated, although she has only accepted us and runs when anyone else comes in the house. She also, has my husband wrapped around her furry paws!

Resolve to play with your cat

By Sara Ferguson Dear Miss Kitty, My cat Avalon isn’t a kitten anymore at 7 years old. She used to be very active but now she just sleeps a lot. Is there anything I can do to keep her from being a couch potato?

Bored on Boulder Dear Bored, Many guardians complain that their cat just doesn’t play anymore. It can also be frustrating for you if Avalon just sits there.

Playing is essential for cats, as it translates to hunting for food in their natural world. Just like you’d walk your dog every day, playing with your cat every day is good for their mental and physical health. Here are some tips to get Avalon up and at ‘em!

Move it or snooze it Many people assume that leaving a toy around will be enough to get a cat playing. Unless it has catnip or an appealing texture, a stationary toy is usually boring to a cat.

Cats need movement to pique their interest. The best cat toy is one with you on the other end of it.

Your job is to think like the prey the cat is stalking. Move the toy away from the cat. Hide it behind things.

Make it rattle a little. Start and stop randomly.

Hands to yourself!

There aren’t very many mistakes to make when playing with a cat, but this is the big one: never, ever use your hands for playing!

We get it. It’s just too easy to tease a little kitten with your finger.

Please always use a cat toy when playing with your cat. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or expensive. It can be as simple as attaching a string to a stick.

Finish with a treat Since playtime mimics hunting, cats love to finish the session the same way they would in the wild: by eating something tasty. Just a small protein treat or two will satisfy.

You’ll probably find Avalon settling in and she may even groom or fall asleep. That’s when you know you’ve done a good job!

he last dollop of cheesy artichoke dip has been scooped up, the carton of egg nog is empty and my husband and I have to wait another year for more of Aunt Peg’s homemade fudge.

Not only have the humans in our family devoured the last of the holiday goodies, our dogs have, too.

As a pet sitter, my wonderful clients sweetly remember me—and our dogs—at the holidays. This year our Chip and Ernie have been gifted with an Advent Calendar (filled with salmon and sweet potato treats) from Trader Joe’s, a plate of dog-friendly peanut butter cookies, and boxes of multi-flavored Milk Bones. It’s safe to say that not only will my husband and I be cutting back on calories for the New Year—Chip and Ernie will be doing the same.

Finding the right low-calorie, but nutritious, treats for dogs is frustrating. Healthy snacks specifically formulated for our canine family members can be pricey.

Whipping up something homemade is bewildering as what’s good for human consumption may be toxic to our furry family members. So what does an owner do to help Bear or Daisy stay trim without harming their health?

I consulted with Dr. Carol Steiner, a veterinarian at the Animal Clinic of Woodland Park, to find out what a dog owner can safely give their pets when they need to shed a

few pounds. The dog—not the owner — that is. As the “mom” of two young and vivacious Golden Retrievers and a 14-year old Heeler (that keeps up admirably with his younger canine siblings), Dr. Steiner recommended simple, accessible and inexpensive choices. In addition to carrots and apple slices (with both the skin and seeds removed), Dr. Steiner also suggested broccoli and green beans. Dr. Steiner even mentioned that her dogs are a fan of green peppers. Although these snacks are healthy, she says, they should still be given in small amounts to dogs that are not used to them in their diets.

The consequence could be an upset stomach—not a desirable outcome when you and Coco are snuggled in a warm bed on a cold winter’s night. And, she adds, grapes, onions and raisins are a big no-no. A daily dose of exercise is, also, ideal for shedding a few holiday pounds.

So if Ginger’s stylish Christmas sweater or Duke’s new Bronco’s jersey is stretched a bit thin, it might be time for a walk around the block—or finding someone who can do that with them. Just like us, our pets feel better after a bit of a workout and some fresh air.

With the right treats and a healthy diet, help your dog off to a great start in 2020. Here’s a toast to our canine companions for all the unconditional love and support they give us every day. Wishing you and yours a very healthy and happy New Year!

Fountain Valley Senior Center 5745 Southmoor Drive - 520-6470 FVSC Demand Rides

The Fountain Valley Senior Center would like to implement a demand ride (same day rides) program. We have several days where our drivers have idle time; usually mid-mornings. What we would like to start to do is use this idle time for on-demand rides. These rides could be for going shopping at Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Walgreens or even to the park. We would need to keep these rides in the Fountain Valley area. Our transportation history shows; our idle times to be 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. What you need to do: • You would need to sign up for these demand rides in the Transportation office, we do ask for your patience because even though we have some Idle time to fill, if a medical appointment is involved this would have to take priority, this would be rare.

• We would also ask that if you are shopping to keep the bags to what you can carry.

• The rides would need to depart and return to the Senior Center.

• When shopping be ready at the pick times the driver tells you, Very important.

Note: this service might not always be available daily, in lieu of driver call offs.
