Bernhard enjoys capturing life’s moments

hotographer Lee Bernhard’s plans for “retirement” may surprise some.

“I already retired when I graduated from college,” the 74-year-old said. “That’s what I always tell people. What is retirement? To me, retirement is doing what you want to do and not having to say ‘yes sir’ to anyone anymore. God was good to me.”

Since the time he left the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Bernhard has been fortunate to not have a boss. He co-owned a photography business in Vegas before venturing to Colorado Springs in 1997 and opening Colorado Classic Images.

Prior to attending UNLV, Bernhard served four years in the U.S. Navy. He worked on an aircraft carrier, the USS Oriskany, during the Vietnam War. It was one of two ships that suffered major fires onboard.

“Talked to a guy who was on the inside, he told me how near we were to blowing up and sinking,” Bernhard said. “It also was the carrier that John McCain was shot down off of.”

Bernhard earned a business degree from UNLV, but wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to do for a career.

Bernhard met a student who was a photographer. Bernhard’s interest in photography was sparked, and the two starting working together.

Following graduation, the duo opened Bernhard and Williams Photography above a bridal shop in

Las Vegas and starting shooting wedding photos. Later, the business expanded to shooting school photos, and the business grew.

Not too long after, Bernhard would fall in love with a young photographer that came to work for

the business, Rebecca. The couple was married in 1991. It was Bernhard’s second marriage, and the couple would have a son, Shane, in 1994.

A falling out with his business partner in Vegas led the couple to relocate to Colorado Springs in 1997.

“Right from almost the very beginning, we had the idea that we were creating memories. That’s been shown to be true over and over again,” Bernhard said. “With the fires we had here in Colorado Springs, people would say, ‘The first thing I grabbed was my photographs.’”

Bernhard has always strongly believed that photos are the best keepsake. A moment in time captured on film is priceless. He experienced just how precious photos can be and how they can help trigger great memories.

Bernhard’s wife Rebecca passed away from breast cancer in 2009. She was only 49.

“When my wife passed away, and we had the memorial service, just looking out at the people who attended after we showed the slideshow, you could just see how all those people; every photograph would affect them in a different way,” Bernhard said.

PHOTOGRAPHER/from page 4 “That’s the strong connection. It’s something of real value preserving those memories of our life. A still picture just brings back floods of emotion when you look at them. I still look at pictures of my sweet wife, and a tear comes to my eye and that’s brought from looking at the photograph. It’s kind of going back in the file cabinet of your brain.”

Colorado Classic Images’ staple is shooting high school and middle school sports team photos. Even in the digital age, Bernhard feels traditional team photo prints are invaluable to players and parents. Years of experience aids Bernhard in coaxing even the most restless and uncooperative players into posing for photos.

“I have to talk to them and tell them in 20 or 30 years they’re going to be happy they had the photo taken,” Bernhard added.

Instances, where young athletes have passed away before their time from auto accidents or illness, bring new light to the value of Bernhard’s photos.

“Sometimes when we go to a memorial service, it’s those photos that are sitting there,” he said. “That makes my work really meaningful.”

Bernhard is the sole employee of Colorado Classic Images. This allows him to take time off as he pleases.

Shooting high school team photos for 11 schools in the area, Bernhard works full-time … sort of. The breaks in between sports seasons give Bernhard time to enjoy things he loves doing when he’s not working.

“It’s working but not stressful and totally time consuming. But it keeps me busy,” he said.

photos. Bernhard takes a lot of road trips and captures images along the way of the landscapes. Just being outdoors is a pastime for Bernhard. He loves searching for fossils, arrowheads and petrified wood – “All the things you can look for, for free.”

Of course, being his own boss, he enjoys having the freedom to go visit his four kids and grandchildren whenever he pleases.

“Between working, friends and travel, it pretty well takes up all the

time,” Bernhard said. “There aren’t many days where I’m wondering what to do.”

Bernhard is an active member of the Professional Photographer’s Guild of Colorado Springs. He has no plans to stop working in the near future.

“It’s just exciting to having gotten in a profession where you can keep going,” he added. “Until I can’t get to the next photoshoot, I’ll keep photographing.”

In the meantime, Bernhard will continue to fully enjoy his “retirement.”

“There are tons of people who retire but have no idea what they’re going to do. My main thought is try to find what you love to do, even if you’re not being paid for it, and pursue it,” he said. “If you’re kind of bored when you retire, find some things you can be excited about.

Pursue those things until you can’t pursue them anymore.”

Memory problems? Check your medicine cabinet

M

any of us worry about memory loss as we age, and we look for new ways to prevent or minimize it. Did you know that many prescriptions commonly found in the medicine cabinets of adults over 65 can increase your risk of cognitive decline?

Age slows us down, and that includes our circulatory and digestive system, liver, and kidneys, all of which help metabolize or process medication.

Slower metabolism results in the build-up of chemicals in the body, which poses a serious concern when taking certain medications or more than one.

Antihistamines and antidepressants Do you suffer from allergies or depression?

Medications commonly used to treat allergies, nausea, and depression, as well as some drugs used for urinary incontinence and some muscle relaxants can have temporary and long-term negative effects on memory and cognitive function for older adults.

For example, you may have taken Benadryl for allergies or been prescribed an antidepressant such as amitriptyline.

Researchers have found that taking two or more drugs in this category (known as anticholinergics) can cause temporary confusion. Continuous use doubles the risk of developing dementia.

Slower metabolism results in the build-up of chemicals in the body, which poses a serious concern when taking certain medications or more than one.

Anxiety and insomnia Xanax, Valium, and other drugs used to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, seizures, and sleep problems can increase the risk of toxic build-up in brain tissue. These types of drugs (called benzodiazepines) can impair semantic memory (for facts, meanings, and general knowledge), recognition memory (for previously encountered people, objects, and situations), and the formation of new memories. Benzodiazepines also are associated with decline in attention, working memory (the ability to temporarily remember new information), and IQ.

Pain pills Opioids are highly addictive narcotics prescribed for pain, such as codeine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, morphine, and oxycodone. Opioids have been reported to impair short-term memory, which persists after discontinuing the medication, and the ability to learn new information.

Other medications that affect cognitive function In addition to the previously listed medications, many other types of drugs are associated with memory and cognitive impairment. These include statins (to treat high cholesterol), antiseizure drugs, beta-blockers (to treat high blood pressure), and sleep aids such as Ambien. Though the effects of these drugs on cognition are less consistent, they still may increase your risk of cognitive impairment.

If you think your medications may be causing memory loss or other cognitive impairments, do not stop taking the medication without first consulting with your primary care provider. In many cases, different medications, behavior modifications, or long-term psychotherapy can be effective alternatives.

The full title of this book sounds cynical. It is not. It’s about finding out what really matters in our lives and what’s worthy of our energy and commitment—a New Year’s responsibility.

If her name is on their checking/ savings/investment accounts, she should be able to examine them, by going directly to the financial institution if necessary. I have completely recovered and I am back to all my old routines.

My mind is good, I’m a good driver, have an active social life. I don’t know what happened during my down time. It is as if they think they should take over my decision making

Having kids that care is a wonderful thing. I think you should thank them profusely for being there for you and let them know you will call on them when you need something. Let them know that their time spent with you is the most valuable thing they give you. You should see the letters I receive from those who have children who do not appear to care!

On Jan. 24, 1928, the contract which moved Alexander Industries from Englewood to Colorado Springs was signed. Construction for the facility took place the same day. The Pikes Peak Exhibition Club donated the land to entice Alexander Industries to Colorado Springs. This land was previously used as rodeo grounds. A celebratory event, hosted by the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, followed later in the week. When they moved from Englewood, it was reported that it took nearly ever van, truck, and wagon in Colorado, western Kansas, Nebraska and some of the Dakotas. Alexander Film was once the largest producer of theater film advertising, with clients including Samsung and Seven-Up. Alexander Aircraft is best known for its Eaglerock aircraft. Alexander Industries also included Alexite Engineering Division which produced a plaster aggregate.

Don’t run away on Vet Day

By Sara Ferguson Dear Ms. Kitty, This year, I’m resolving to take my cats to their veterinarian for their yearly checkups, even though they get so scared it breaks my heart. Is there anything I can do to make it easier on them…and me?

You’re not alone being stressed on Vet Day! Research says that 38 percent of cat guardians get stressed just thinking about it and over 20% of vets don’t even examine their own cats yearly.

The biggest obstacle is getting your cat there. The second we get out the carrier—aka the Transportable Torture Device—our cats usually vanish. It’s no wonder we are stressed too by the time we actually get to the vet.

At Happy Cats Haven, we work with the most stressed cats, those who

have lost everything they knew and loved. Here are 10 tips we use to make Vet Day as stress-free as possible.

Cat friendly vets

The days of stressing cats by ignoring their terrified—but subtle— body language may be waning. Many practices are now certified in Fear Free Handling. Some vets are also certified to be Cat Friendly Practices.

These clinics have taken the time to learn how to minimize your cat’s stress. A cat who is less stressed will be easier to examine … and easier to treat.

If your vet has a busy, noisy, multi-animal practice, consider letting them know you have arrived and wait in the car for them to get you.

Start early

Get out your carrier as soon as you make the appointment, ideally weeks in advance. Put it in a corner of a room where you hang out with your cats. The goal is to make it just another piece of furniture.

The most heartbreaking stories are ones where the cat was put in the carrier only to have it break open when picked up, dumping the cat out to run away, terrified.

Check your carrier for missing pieces and make sure all fasteners are working properly. If anything is suspect, use a bungee or two to wrap around the carrier.

Cats in stress search out small, dark places to sooth themselves.

Change the carrier from being a torture device to being a place your cat wants to be.

Take an old pillow case or piece of fabric and drape it over the carrier from side to side, covering the holes.

Slit it the short way so you can reach

the handle. Also place your cats’ favorite bedding in the carrier.

Reward, reward, reward

Every day, place some of your cats’ favorite treats in the carrier to eat at their own pace. Soon your cats should be having a good experience there. They may even choose to go in the carrier on their own, which is exactly what you want!

Treats before surgery

If you have to remove your cats’ food for surgery, try some fish flake treats. They appeal to most cats but will not compromise their food ban.

Another option is to offer just the gravy from canned food, no more than 1/4 teaspoon.

Lie in wait

The night before Vet Day, make sure your cats’ food runs out, especially if you free feed. If you schedule feed, feed them a little less than normal.

On Vet Day, get out your cats’ most favorite treats. Toss them into the very back of the carrier. If they are crunchy, try to hit the carrier wall so the cat hears them.

Stand nonchalantly by the carrier.

VET DAY/from page 12 The second your cat is mostly inside, purposefully and quickly shut the door, using the door to push the cat all the way inside. Do not shut the door on the cat’s tail! Quickly lock the door so the cat cannot escape.

Last resort

If you can’t get your cats to go in the carrier on their own, do not chase them down. Get out their breakfast and take it into a bathroom. If they haven’t eaten since the night before, they should be interested.

Let them eat a little and then quietly bring in the carrier, keeping them in the room. Tip the carrier on end with the opening at the top.

Pick up your cat and place him or her tail down in the carrier. Research shows scruffing can be detrimental, but this is one case where a swift scruff to quickly put the cat in the carrier may help immobilize him or her with the least trauma.

Keep it level

Your carrier should be already covered. Either carry it from the bottom or keep it level when carrying by the handle. Swinging your cats around when you move them only scares them more.

Soothe the ride

Play soft music in the car, like classical or light music. If the cat cries, speak occasionally in soft tones but try not to encourage meowing.

Five myths about the flu

all has arrived, and so has the annual flu season. While flu – or influenza – is most serious for older Americans and people with certain chronic conditions, influenza can affect people of all ages and lead to hospitalizations, significant health complications and even death.

As many as 35 million flu cases are expected this year, starting in October and continuing into May, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The peak months are December through February.

Most people have likely had the flu at some point – with symptoms such as a constant cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches and fatigue – yet many myths and misperceptions remain.

Here are five myths and facts that can help you and your loved ones reduce the risk of catching the flu.

Myth: Flu shots don’t really work.

Fact: The flu vaccine reduces the

The vaccine’s effectiveness depends on multiple factors – including the amount of time between vaccination and exposure to the disease, your age and health status – yet studies show that the flu vaccination benefits public health, especially when the vaccine is well matched to that year’s circulating viruses.

Myth: I got vaccinated last year, so I should be good for this year, too.

Fact: The flu virus changes each year, so flu vaccines change to keep pace. Plus, the body’s immune response to a flu vaccine declines over time, which means a yearly vaccination is the best option.

Myth: I exercise and eat healthy, so I don’t need to get vaccinated.

Fact: It is true being healthy may help you recover from illness more quickly, but it won’t prevent you from getting or spreading the flu virus. Even healthy people can be infected and spread the flu virus without showing symptoms.

Myth: The flu vaccine is only

necessary for the old and very young.

Fact: The CDC recommends flu shots for everyone six months and older. Getting vaccinated later in the flu season – through January or even after – can still be beneficial. It is important to start early in the season for children, as two doses of the vaccine may be necessary, with the shots given at least four weeks apart.

Myth: Getting the flu is not that serious.

Fact: The CDC reports that more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications each year, while 36,000 die from it. Reducing the risk of flu is especially important for people who have certain medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes or chronic lung disease; and for pregnant women, young children and people 65 and older.

Now is the time to get a flu vaccine, which is considered preventive and in most cases is covered through employer-sponsored, individual and Medicare and Medicaid health plans. Vaccines are available through primary care physicians and convenience care clinics.

1 pound turkey breast meat

16 c water, divided 8 oz. carrot, diced into 1/4-inch pieces, divided 8 oz. celery, diced into 1/4-inch pieces, divided 1/2 pound butter or margarine 2 T minced garlic 2 c yellow onion, diced into 1/4-inch pieces 1 1/2 c white flour 1/2 c turkey base 1 1/2 t kosher salt 1 1/4 t ground black pepper 1/2 t dried sage 1/2 t dried marjoram 1/4 t dried rosemary 1/4 t dried thyme 1 3/4 c heavy cream 1/4 c chopped Italian parsley 3/4 c dried cranberries, diced Cook turkey in oven. Slice into bite size pieces. Reserve to add to finished soup.

Heat five cups water to boil. Cook 4 ounces carrots and 4 ounces celery 8 minutes until soft. Strain and cool in cold water. Reserve to add to finished soup.

Melt butter. Add garlic, onion, remaining carrots and remaining celery. Saute 5 minutes. Stir in flour and continue cooking 5 minutes on low-medium heat.

Combine white sugar, buttermilk, canola oil, eggs, orange juice concentrate and orange zest. Beat to dissolve sugar.

Mix cranberry sauce, wet mix

and dry mix until thoroughly combined.

To make sugar topping: Mix brown sugar and powdered sugar thoroughly to combine.

Heat oven to 350 F. Spray muffin pan with quick release spray. Scoop muffins into pan.

Top each muffin with 1 teaspoon sugar topping.

Bake approximately 15 minutes.

LAUGHING MATTERS Principal’s observation

My principal came to my classroom to do her annual observation of my teaching. I had told my students she was coming and they were on their best behavior.

The lesson was going well and I told the class I was going to put a marble in the jar because of their good input and participation in the lesson.

(A jar full bought popcorn and a movie.)

As I reached for the marble jar, my principal held it out to me, dropping it in the process. Marbles flew everywhere and students immediately were on their knees grabbing them.

When order was restored we continued the lesson, and the principal slipped out.

I went with dragging feet after school to her office to get my evaluation. As I opened the door, she burst into laughter and said, “All I could think of was here are two teachers, and they are both losing their marbles!”

Road Trip

My daughter drove from Colorado Springs to southeast Kansas with her three year old daughter to visit my husband and me, the grandparents.

Although they broke it up into two days, the trip was still long for a three year old strapped in a car seat.

When they pulled into the driveway our granddaughter was unbuckled and slid out of the car. She marched up to me, put her hands on her hips and said, “Grandma, I have three words for you - Fin al ly.”

Hospital regulations require a wheel- chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet who insisted he didn’t need my help to leave the hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator.

On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.

“I don’t know,” he said. “She’s still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.”

A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father’s new wife had bought the exact same dress!

She asked her to exchange it, but she refused. Jennifer told her mother, who graciously said, “Never mind, sweetheart. I’ll get another dress.

They say when you take in a stray animal, they show their appreciation for what you have done for them. SuSu, a young tabby mix that I took in, exemplifies this saying. Her love and protection have kept me feeling safe and secure in my home. As a single person, I now have a family.

Her every move is a delight to the eye! She is queen of my abode, and rules quiety with grace.

SuSu is my perfect companion and we are in sync.

When I’m reading, she is quiet and reflective.

When I’m upset she sits up and watches me in concern. If I go to bed in despair, she follows and comforts me by lying down beside me. When I’m moving about, she signals her desire to play. She continues to make me laugh and lifts my spirits. I have been blessed by loving SuSu and her loving me.

Some taxpayers have to pay federal income taxes on their Social Security benefits. This usually happens only if they have other substantial income (such as wages, self-employment, interest, dividends and other taxable income that must be reported on your tax return) in addition to Social Security benefits.

Taxable Benefits:

To determine the amount of Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits that may be taxable, taxpayers must compare the base amount with the total of: 1) One-half of the benefits received, plus 2) All other income, including tax-exempt interest.

Example #1: John and Betty, a married couple both age 68, are retired and receive the following income: Source John Betty Social Security .................................. $ 7,500 .............. $ 3,500 Pension .............................................. $ 16,000 ............ $ 6,000 Interest ............................................... $ 250 ................. $ 250

John and Betty file a joint tax return. Their income used to determine if Social Security benefits are taxable ($28,000) is less than the taxable Social Security base amount ($32,000) for joint filers. None of their Social Security benefits are taxable.

Example #2: Assume the same facts as Example #1 however the combined interest income for John and Betty is $10,000 instead of $500. Their income used to determine if Social Security benefits are taxable ($37,500) is greater than the taxable Social Security base amount ($32,000) for joint filers.

Therefore, some of their Social Security benefits are now taxable!

Does it make sense to pay taxes on money that you are not using?

How Much Is Taxable?

Generally, up to 50% of benefits will be taxable at ordinary tax rates. How-ever, up to 85% of benefits can be taxable at ordinary tax rates if either of the following situations applies.

• The total of one-half of the benefits and all other in-come is more than $34,000 ($44,000 for Married Filing Jointly).

• The taxpayer is Married Filing Separately and lived with his or her spouse at any time during the year.
