Clownin’ around Cabo for a cause Educator invites students, seniors to join him on service trips for Travel With A Purpose By Anthony Welch
W
hile vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico nine years ago, educator Steve Shapiro had a thought. He loved his trips to Mexico, but felt the urge to do more while visiting there. “I’m a teacher so I’m always working with kids and helping in some way,” said Shapiro, who operates The Learning Connection, a learning disabilities center. That’s when he got involved with a daycare there and decided to entertain the children. He quickly learned a few magic tricks and decided to don a clown outfit – a red nose and some funny shoes - and the experience was a success. “I had never entertained Shapiro like that before. It turned out to be the most wonderful experience for me,” he said. “I said to myself, ‘I want to do more of this.’” And that was how Travel With a Purpose came to be. Steve and his wife Sheilah organize a few trips a year to Cabo and recruit high school students, parents and seniors to join them on their service trips there. Shapiro’s friends started saying, “I’d love to go with you sometime.” Slowly, but surely it turned into a fully-developed, week-long trip. Shapiro said he didn’t want the trips to be stressful or anything. He calls them, “missions light,” or they’re more serving trips.
