CONFORTI PHOTOGRAPHY // About the Photographer Cassie Conforti is an Indianapolis-based wedding photographer and proud mama of two—a three-year-old and a one-year-old. She is also happily married to her high school sweetheart, Andrew. Shooting weddings is her absolute favorite thing in the world, as she loves being a part of such a happy and beautiful day in people’s lives. She thrives on sharing those intimate moments with people week after week and telling their love stories through photos. She is a lover of all things neutral and anything that Joanna Gaines touches! Thanks to her beloved toddlers (who love greeting the sun as it rises) she finds iced coffee to be her lifeline.

FEATURED WEDDING

PHOTOGRAPHED BY IVAN & LOUISE

ELLIE & TYLER COPAS

You know it’s true love when, after (accidentally) standing your future husband up on your first date, he asks you out again! While this may have been a humorous twist to Ellie and Tyler Copas’ beginning, they made up for it as they journeyed together as a couple. It was a milestone trip to The Grand Canyon, however, that took them on a major life turn. Ellie says, “We went on a long hike and when we stopped midway for lunch, Tyler told me he had something for me. I honest to God thought he was going to surprise me with cookies, but he pulled out the ring and proposed!”

10

WEDDINGDAY

berry bliss A WEDDING AT THE ZIONSVILLE BARN

THE PLANNING The couple planned on a two year engagement, so Ellie was thankful for the additional time to plan. “I’m not the most organized (or motivated) person, so this was a blessing,” admits Ellie. Although she didn’t have concrete wedding ideas in mind, she was sure of a couple of things: She wanted a smaller wedding and for her beloved cats to somehow be involved! Lucky for Ellie, her super creative mom helped her tremendously through the planning process. “Honestly, my mom took care of most of the creative process. Not only is she artistic with remarkable aesthetic vision, but she also knows me really well. I was sure I was going to love whatever she came up with (and I did),” says Ellie. Their tool of choice was some major Internet inspiration!

THE DRESS Ellie turned to The Wedding Studio in Carmel for her dream wedding gown. “Surprisingly, my dress was actually one of the very first dresses I tried on,” Ellie says. “I knew I wanted something comfortable and romantic, and it was perfect!” Wild Horses Salon and Allier Beauty by Krystal Goodwine completed her look. The bride’s hair and makeup was gorgeously soft and utterly romantic.

BERRY BLISS // Featured Wedding

THE VENUE When it came to the venue, The Barn at Zionsville was a perfect match for the couple’s tastes. Its cozy, close-knit atmosphere added the touch of romance Ellie envisioned. An added plus was the great service, too. “Everyone there was wonderful and made me and my wedding party and guests feel so welcome,” Ellie says. Initially aiming for a summer wedding, Ellie and Tyler were left with one last date of October 29th, as the venue had booked up. However, the two couldn’t have been happier. “It ended up perfect, because the surrounding woods were gorgeous and the weather was amazing,” Ellie explains.

THE FLORAL Ellie did what many brides do and allowed her trusty and most favorite color to lead the way in the design. “Our florist, Autumn Keller of Isibeal Studio, knew my favorite color is pink, and she made sure it was everywhere!” says Ellie. “Each floral arrangement on the tables was also totally unique.” Featuring fresh berries, whimsical greenery and varying hues of pink, the florals and bouquets were simply lovely.

WEDDINGDAY 13

THE DÉCOR The fall season served as a true influence behind Ellie and Tyler’s wedding. From the blush pink color Ellie loved to the darker berry colors and sparkling gold, the rich palette reflected warm autumn hues. Fresh apples creatively labeled in gold served as sweet and creative place cards for guests. Glass terrariums delicately encasing floral arrangements graced the tables and berry colored tapered candles welcomed guests. Other special décor items included a custom cake topper that included the couple’s four cats and a fun kids’ snack bar for all the children in their families. “We had a pie bar for dessert along with an apple cider bar, and I did the chalkboard signs for each,” Ellie says of the other unique touches.

WHAT WE

love

We love the beautifully simple expectations this couple had for their big day: fun times with family and friends, good food and music. Ellie says, “Let the little things slide, and try not to worry about the details going wrong. No matter what happens, you’ll be married at the end of the day. That’s the important part, right?”

THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name

AFTER THE WEDDING

Y

our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.

1. GET THE ORIGINAL

3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE

5. UPDATE YOUR BANK

Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.

The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.

2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL

4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME

6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME

If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.

When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.

MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

it’s a girl thing HOW TO USE GROUP EXERCISE TO MEET YOUR #SQUATGOALS & #SQUADGOALS

w

hen you’re busy taking care of the countless things that will make your big day come together flawlessly, you hardly have time to think about your triceps or thighs. In fact, you’re probably dreaming, researching, scheduling, planning and pinning your way to creating the best wedding ever as we speak, but that leaves one pretty important thing out, and that’s you, lovely! While all the other things do matter and have their place in the world of wedding planning, how you are feeling and taking care of you is priceless. We mean, how else are you going to keep all that pre-wedding energy up and, ultimately, look and feel your best when the big day arrives? Whether your wedding day is in a year, a few months or a few weeks, it’s never too late to take a serious look at your weekly exercise regimen, while adding in some stress-busting fun! If you’re already on the right track, congrats and get it, girl! But if you’re looking for some serious (and fun) exercise inspo, we’ve got you covered right here. Grab some H2O and your maids of honor because there are many different options for putting those #squatgoals to action, all while having a blast and bonding with your #girlsquad! Because what’s better than a good old endorphin-pumping exercise session? Toning up and slimming down with some of your besties by your side, of course!

group yoga

Nothing brings Zen to your life like yoga. From Bikram to Vinyasa to Power Sculpt, there are many types of yoga sure to bring a smile (and glow) to your face. In addition to leaving your worries at the door for an hour, you will have the opportunity to bond with your girls in a peaceful setting and fully embrace your overall health and wellness. After breathing deeply and strengthening and lengthening your muscles (and possibly muscles you didn’t know you had!), you will experience a total overhaul of your mind, body and spirit.

pure barre

Want to burn extra calories and create lean muscle? If your answer is “yes, please!”, sign yourself and your girls up for this muscleelongating, low-impact class. Utilizing the ballet barre and small isometric movements, this technique can bring tone to the areas women tend to need a little extra help in the most: arms, abdominals, glutes, hips and thighs. Enjoy some upbeat music, inspiring instructors and zero pressure to be at a certain level. Bonus: Some studios even offer private sessions for brides and their friends!

If flirty fun sounds like a better fit for you and your group, you can have some crazy memorable times and laughs at a pole fitness class, belly dance class or lap dancing class. Designed for those who love something truly girly and out-of-the-box where you can enjoy a unique experience while getting a quality workout (seriously, you may be unable to get off the floor the next day), these places are a perfect match for a bride and her bridal party.

nature hikes or bikes

A pretty powerful remedy to combating any type of stress is getting out in nature and breathing in some fresh air. Add some dear friends to the mix and a walk becomes a joyous time spent enjoying each other’s company and the beautiful outdoors. You can make it as leisurely or challenging as your heart desires. Another idea? Add bikes to the mix! Many cities have different bike routes or state parks that offer scenic treks as well.

pilates

Kind to your joints and killer for your core, Pilates can do wonders for your strength, focus and flexibility. Three magical words alone make this type of exercise enticing for any bride-to-be: long, lean and toned. Research the different studios in your city and see what they have to offer. They might host a bridal bootcamp or special for you and your girls.

spin classes

These classes can be total motivators and calorie-kickers. Not to mention, fun! Led by an instructor sure to guide you and your girls to a music-pumped ride, you can really challenge yourself—and each other! And we know you would rather have your BFF by your side to keep you motivated, instead of a sweaty stranger! Be prepared to leave this class super-sweaty but super-euphoric!

kickboxing

Keep in mind ladies, martial arts-inspired exercise classes aren’t just for the guys! This high-energy, full-body workout might be just the thing you need to get your blood pumping, while getting a little stress relief. There’s no doubt this interactive workout could be a blast for you and your girl squad, too and—bonus—you’ll be burning fat, enhancing muscle and increasing endurance all at once! Another plus? You might walk away with some moves you could use in a selfdefense situation, too. Have a ton of fun with this type of class (and don’t blame us for those sore quads or calves!).

5k, 10k & beyond

Finding out which races are taking place in your local city is just a quick Internet search away. One idea to consider is turning a scheduled walk or run activity into a weekend trip by signing up for one in a nearby city or—if any of your bridesmaids live in another state entirely—in their neck of the woods. It’s a great way to have a weekend getaway with your squad, get in some quality girl time and have some muscletoning fun! The actual types of races available these days run the gamut. From charity walks, 5K runs, mini-marathons, and marathons to triathlons and specialty challenge events (think Mud Run, City Challenges and Rugged Maniac runs), the options are limitless. Not to mention, you’ll get some pretty great photos to ‘gram about!

While this is by no means an all-encompassing list, it’s a great place to start. It’s important to remember that it is possible to have a gorgeous wedding and bod! Like everything, you simply need to carve out the time. Seek some extra support and motivation from the best motivational coaches on the planet—your girlfriends—and you’ll be photo-ready and feeling great in no time.

FEATURED WEDDING

KIM MARCINIAK-LOPEZ & ALEX LOPEZ It was life-changing experiences as Peace Corps members that set Kim and Alex’s hearts ablaze. Their love story reads much like a sweet, romantic movie. Two young Americans are both spending their formative years in service abroad and, while enduring the emotional ups and downs of their experience, they meet up each weekend. Sharing a mutual love of travel, food and movies, they grow closer and closer.

When describing the low-key and true-to-their-nature proposal, Kim says, “On Valentine’s Day, when we had returned from Ukraine, Alex made my favorite food for dinner and proposed while the song from Twilight, ‘A Thousand Years,’ played on the radio. We kept our engagement to ourselves and waited until we had both been settled in the U.S. for a year, before we officially announced it to our families. This gave us time, as a couple, to enjoy one another and re-adjust to life in the United States before moving onto the next phase of our lives.”

A FAIRYTALE GARDEN WEDDING // Featured Wedding

THE PLANNING Kim dreamt of a unique but timeless wedding of close friends and family, and she envisioned pastels, gorgeous florals and intimacy. “I started out on Pinterest, but what really gave me the best inspiration was reading the blogs of Indianapolis photographers and planners,” Kim says. “Seeing actual Indianapolis weddings gave me the most realistic expectations on what to expect and also introduced me to some great vendors.” As an out-of-state bride, this was a big help to Kim in terms of searching for vendors. Recognizing the value of a planner, the couple also turned to Tara of Tara Nicole Weddings to help them realize their vision. She was also a key resource when it came to the couple finalizing their “dream team.” Kim says of the results, “All of our vendors seemed to understand us well and gave us a beautiful day from start to finish.”

THE DRESS

THE FLOWERS

Kim had the best of both worlds with her elegant Monique Lhuillier dress from Marie Gabriel Couture. It had the ball gown “feel” that she loved but moved and flowed more easily than other styles she tried on. She also chose a soft blush color—a hue that complemented her complexion perfectly. The flowing design exuded romance and was an elegant fit for her intimate Laurel Hall wedding.

“We fell in love with our florist, Meg Connelly, from Meg Catherine Flowers after seeing her beautiful flowers on so many wedding photography blogs,” explains Kim. “She just seemed to have such unique style and her floral arrangements seemed to be true works of art.” The artful creations wowed with a variety of roses, ranunculus, blushing bride protea, Chocolate cosmos, Scabiosa, and silver sage, to name a few.

WEDDINGDAY

THE VENUE Location was the first item on the couple’s list when planning began. “At the time, Alex and I were working for the federal government in Illinois. Alex originates from New York and my parents live in Texas,” Kim says. “So I was not a bride that began with a very specific location on where my wedding should be.” They ultimately decided on Indianapolis as a central and affordable location and one that would be most convenient for their families. After almost initially passing on Laurel Hall, Kim and Alex fell in love with it with a little help from their videographer, Brie Gowan of Blushing Films, who happened to show them videos of the venue. The hall’s classic features suited their needs perfectly, serving as an ideal spot for their small guest count and on-site ceremony.

THE DÉCOR

FEATURED WEDDING

WHAT WE

love

Never underestimate the power of all the effort you put into your big day. Even though the small details are ultimately meant to please you, they don’t go unnoticed! We love how this couple’s hard work paid off and was remembered. Kim says, “People always compliment us on how gorgeous everything was and all the small details. Our venue really became an indoor garden.”

JENNIFER VAN ELK PHOTOGRAPHY

SPECIAL TOUCHES The dreamy, fairytale garden space would not have been complete without tributes to the bride’s grandmother, who passed away from breast cancer just three months before the wedding. Kim says, “She was such a special part of both our lives and, quite honestly, one of my best friends.” Jessica Peddicord of Simply Jessica Marie designed a custom calligraphy ribbon for Kim’s wedding bouquet with the last words from her grandmother “You are the highlight of my life” inscribed on it. The couple purchased their wedding bands from the very same shop as her grandmother and mother—Victor Settle Jewelry. The jeweler also designed custom bands that resembled the same detailing on Kim’s grandmother’s wedding ring. One final touch was the nod to Disney. “My grandmother also loved Disney and she always joked her Disney spirit character was Mrs. Potts,” says Kim. “We were sure to have our string quartet play ‘Beauty and the Beast’ before our ceremony started and my bridal entrance was to ‘At Last I See The Light’ from Tangled.”

38

WEDDINGDAY

Blush was just the versatile color Kim was looking for in her design. She also infused navy—a color Alex loved. “When we decided that we wanted our wedding theme to be sort of a romantic, indoor garden, our other colors seemed to fall into place from there,” Kim says. Notes of gold and mauve played off of the design’s main hues beautifully as the delicate florals and extra special details took center stage. The bride also took on a couple of D.I.Y. projects, including a memorial table and goodie bags for the kids who attended.

Something Old, Something New WHY WE LOVE MANSIONS, ESTATES & HISTORIC VENUES

HENDERSON CASTLE Meg Van Kampen Studios 42 WEDDINGDAY

When it comes to wedding venues, choosing a place that’s the right fit for your nuptials can certainly be challenging. After all, you want something that meshes with your style, budget and what you envision overall. Add to that the fact that there are so many different types of venues out there and you have a real weddingcake flavored pickle on your hands. Take note that one niche of venues that has always stood out are those that have been around for a long, long time or offer a unique, one-of-kind space. And when it comes to seeing why these locales will surely satisfy your taste for something unique, timeless or just plain stunning, it usually takes less than a glance.

The character or stories behind their walls serves as a reminder of days gone by or grand affairs... If you haven’t guessed it yet, historic estates and mansions are these very venues—the rich spaces we love to love! They had us at their grand staircases, ivy-cloaked stone, alluring chandeliers, wrap around porches, and delicate fountains. The character or stories behind their walls serves as a reminder of days gone by or grand affairs, and we can’t help but smile thinking of the weddings that have graced their floral-covered gazebos, candlelit parlors or marble floors. Read on for more of what makes these stunning locations a perfect pick for dream weddings, large or small, and why they take our breath away.

WEDDINGDAY 43

Historical buildings, mansions and estates rely on dedicated and skilled staff members to ensure these beautiful landmarks continue to do what they seem to do best—accommodate guests and host special events. Whether it’s a staff member, an in-house planning professional or an entire event design team, you will have all the assurance and resources you need in executing your dream wedding. For venues where outside vendors are permitted, venue staff will be happy to make any needed recommendations while being available throughout all stages of the planning process.

Historic Charm The allure of a gorgeous old home or building is something that just can’t be duplicated. It is an authentic feeling that will give your wedding a very unique vibe and wow factor. Whether it’s the stunning details, antique furnishings, elegant ballrooms or enchanting grounds that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time, the charm and beauty of an aged space lends itself to a quite lovely experience for a couple and their guests.

Unmatched Service When it comes to high-quality fare and service, these venues are often as fancy as their buildings and grounds. Equipped with expert wait staff and chefs, some venues even tout use of their own fresh, garden-grown ingredients. Gourmet cuisine prepared on-site is just another way this category of venues will ensure your day is as tasty as it is memorable.

Feel Like Royalty

All in the Atmosphere

If there’s one time in your life you should feel pampered and on a pedestal, it’s your wedding day. With historic estates and mansions, you are assured the utmost privacy for you and your guests and, in some cases, you are offered an exclusive experience and enticing packages—fit for a prince and princess, of course! From complimentary bride and groom spa treatments to free breakfast for your guests, these venues want you to feel as special as the place you are surrounded by!

If you look at old estates, it’s evident the original inhabitants were in the business of entertaining. These homes, after all, were often built in a time when modern conveniences didn’t exist and favorite pastimes included dinners, social gatherings and celebrations. When you book an event in one of these venues, the same sense of opulence and celebration seeps from all the fine details, layout and overall atmosphere. What better place to host a special event than in a place designed to welcome and host family and friends?

MANSIONS, ESTATES & HISTORIC VENUES // Venues We Love

Sprawling Gardens & Manicured Lawns There’s nothing better than a lush, green backdrop filled with flowers and fountains. With historic estates and mansions, their charm and elegance is typically carried through to the outdoors as well, giving a bride and groom an extended space to entertain in, while building on the lovely ambiance the space already exudes. Consider that an outdoor space so pretty also needs less decor as Mother Nature has already equipped it with everything it needs to shine.

BALMORAL HOUSE Huff Photography

Bed & Breakfast Option For buildings and estates in which room rentals are an option, having the opportunity to stay on-site and for an extended period is certainly an added bonus. Not only is this convenient for you and any of your guests, you can immerse yourself in the luxury and special nature of the entire experience. Love that gorgeous old veranda and private pool? Imagine enjoying a quiet cup of morning coffee poolside with your new husband or wife!

WEDDINGDAY

We have all fallen in love with a piece of artwork at some point in our lives. For Sarah Kriner, of Sarah Kriner Photography, she fell in love with a whole genre—Golden Age Dutch painters. She says, “Their use of dramatic light and magically opulent settings have captivated me for as long as I can remember. I wanted to take the overall feeling of these paintings (the floral ones in particular) and translate them into modern day wedding inspiration.” From this obsession, stemmed Sarah’s idea for a “Dutch Still Life Wedding,” and she decided to bring this vision to life in the middle of January. She teamed up with Jodie Stansbury of Aisle Ready Events to truly make it a dream come true. The location of this shoot was critical to Sarah’s vision. She ended up choosing Laurel Hall, which provided a subtle wooden look that was not overstated, yet timeless. Sarah says, “Laurel Hall is so completely different than anything you’d think to find in the Indy area. It’s straight out of the old world, and the contrast between the dark wood rooms and staircase and the brightness of the solarium is just what I wanted.” From the flowing chiffon ball gown and braided crown to the moody, sea-inspired stationery and painterly buttercream cakes, this style shoot sets the perfect stage for a decadent age gone by. However, we think you’ll agree it’s certainly one that lives on beautifully in this modern-era style shoot.

URBAN TROPICS // Cover Shoot

THE VISION There’s no question that tropical weddings are exciting. The bright, juicy colors and vibrant florals and fauna seem to whisk you away instantly. We desired a cover shoot equally as colorful and alluring but—with one twist. We wanted to showcase that the same look would pair beautifully with the unexpected—a modern, urban environment. Desiring to do something a little different than what we typically see in the Midwest, we aimed at bringing a little island fun to the city! From the large, Monstera leaves and eclectic mixes of tropical florals to lush, green place settings and pretty pops of color, we dreamt up a gorgeous palette sure to wow anyone and quite perfect for any creative bride and groom looking to celebrate their big day with a fun, modern and tropicalinspired wedding. In order to make our dreams a reality, we teamed up with full-service wedding planner and designer, Sarah Agee, owner of Plum & Poppy Weddings, an Indianapolis-based design, planning, and coordination company. She expertly harnessed the loads of inspiration we had, helping to craft our unconventional theme beautifully.

COVER SHOOT

THE VENUE The Indianapolis Artsgarden was an ideal location for the shoot. This arts and cultural center not only lives in the heart of the city, it has all the modern elements we were looking for—a unique, open space, sleek lines, walls of glass and the bright backdrop we envisioned. It housed our theme exquisitely, offering balance and a ton of space for the colors to play off of.

56

WEDDINGDAY

CONFORTI PHOTOGRAPHY

THE DÉCOR The strikingly modern space provided the perfect amount of contrast to the abundant tropical florals and other bright dÊcor items. Central to the look were eyecatching Violet Vintage rentals, including a vintage table, oversized wicker furniture (a must-have for any island party), a bright yellow couch and green armchair. The tropical arbor also wowed with its cascading floral and green foliage. Current trends we were able to playfully include were the pineapples and bright colors.

WEDDINGDAY 57

THE LOOK The gorgeous, lightweight tulle ball gown worn by our bride was a Jim Hjelm design from LUXEredux Bridal. Featuring a sheer, sequinembroidered bodice, V-neckline, sequin straps, open back and sweep train, this dress brought a level of elegance to the relaxed, tropical theme. The bodice, especially, reflected a leaf-like pattern in its detail. Leslie Hair and Makeup completed the stunning look with two different hairstyles—a natural, softly curled hairstyle and a romantically swept updo, showcasing the bride’s feminine makeup, natural beauty and striking Kendra Scott jewelry. Each hairstyle was accented with vibrant, fresh florals. The handsome groom was picture perfect in a crisp blue suit from Andrew Davis Clothiers, one of our favorite menswear retailers, located in Bloomington, Indiana. A brightly-hued paisley-patterned tie added a perfect pop of color, while an orchid boutonniere was the perfect final touch. 58

WEDDINGDAY

URBAN TROPICS // Cover Shoot

THE FLORAL In order to bring the feeling of warmth and vibrancy into the minimalist space, bright, tropical flowers were a key component infused into the overall design. Thanks to Sarah’s know-how, we had the ideal person for the job with Linda of Accent Floral Design, as she had lived in Hawaii for 13 years. She expertly incorporated an abundance of orchids, Proteas and other interesting shapes into the modern botanical design. Sarah says, “The design of these types of arrangements are entirely different from other designs, so she was the perfect fit for this.” CONFORTI PHOTOGRAPHY

WEDDINGDAY 59

THE STATIONERY & SIGNAGE Athena Street Creative used the green of the Monstera leaf as the color inspiration behind the stationery’s tropical design and paradise-inspired details. The black and white accents were a nod to the sleek, modern concept. Athena Street Creative also designed the gorgeous menus, table numbers and signage.

THE CAKE & DESSERTS Our bright, lush theme called for equally bold desserts. Confectioneiress Cupcakes & Sweets provided custom pineapple French macarons and mini royal iced sugar cookies that served as fun accents to the brightly colored tiered cake. Toasted coconut panna cotta garnished with a pineapple leaf was an additional showstopper in the savory spread.
