about the cover photographer KARA HANES PHOTOGRAPHY

Kara is a Grand Rapids, Michigan wedding and senior photographer, plus educator. She's over ten years deep in the wedding industry but that isn't all she has done. In fact, just a few years ago you could have found her in a sea of preschoolers. She received her early child education degree in 2007 and taught preschool for 10 years. How does this help? As a preschool teacher she learned how to multitask while the never ending chaos was happening. She knows how to obtain gentle authority when needed but also how to step back and let natural moments happen as they were intended. She communicates often and when necessary and promises to make it fun. You not only get a photographer but a professional day of coordinator for your photography! WEDDINGDAY

VENUE:

Leona Road Grand Rapids, MI

After hosting a wedding in Germany in 2022 for Nina’s family that wouldn’t be able to make it to the US for their big day, Nina and Steven got married…again! Since they let the beautiful German scenery inspire their first celebration, they wanted the second one to go a different route. They utilized inspiration photos to send to their vendors to make sure their wedding was what they had in mind. Envisioning an elegant and timeless wedding with plenty of romantic details, they decided on a unique venue with opulent touches like chandeliers and a wooden wall accent. Nina also chose a stunning classic gown that fit perfectly with the vibe of their day! WEDDINGDAY

"One piece of advice—it is never too early to start planning. The last few months before the wedding flew by so quickly, and it was very helpful to have taken care of so many details beforehand. My husband and I have never gotten professional pictures taken and we were very nervous to be in front of so many cameras. We chose a photographer and videographer who could guide us through poses and made the experience fun. We were even able to take engagement photos and an engagement video to feel more comfortable before our big day. I highly recommend doing this since it also allowed us to capture memories of the engagement phase."

T

he industrial and soft styles were popular in the wedding world when this creative team came together to plan this shoot, so they decided to marry them in a creative way. With the help of AAYS Event Rentals' large rental collection, they combined light and soft details with warm metals. Even though these two ideas seem to oppose each other, these vendors showed how they could balance each other in an elegant style, proving nothing is impossible to pull off with a clear vision in mind! The venue itself seems like it was built to bring these two contrasting ideas together. In the dining areas, the team appreciated the black window framing, which adds an industrial touch, while the large glass windows flood the space with abundant natural light. The combination of materials such as wood and metal struck a perfect balance for the shoot.

ADVICE from the PRO TOP 5 TIPS FOR WORKING WITH A RENTAL COMPANY Lauren Krempec, Special Events Designer Burns Special Events

Planning a wedding is a wondrous journey, and each step you take brings you closer to the day you've always dreamed of. Rentals may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you envision your dream wedding, but they play a pivotal role in bringing your wedding design to life. From the elegant chairs where your guests will sit during the ceremony, to the exquisite tableware they'll use to dine at your reception, rentals are the canvas upon which you paint the unique picture of your special day. The linens, lighting, décor items and even the dance floor – all these components work in harmony to create an atmosphere that reflects your style and personality. Lauren Krempec, Special Events Designer at Burns Special Events in Mishawaka, Indiana, understands the pivotal role that rentals play in making your wedding day extraordinary. Her expertise and insights, shared in the following top five tips, will empower you to navigate the world of wedding rentals with confidence and create a memorable event that truly captures your vision! 38

WEDDINGDAY

1.

2.

Start Early

Do Your Homework

Lauren's first piece of advice is to begin your rental preparations as early as possible, ideally starting a minimum of 9 months before your wedding date. Wedding dates can fill up quickly, especially during peak wedding seasons, so securing your rental items well in advance is essential. Starting early ensures that you have the best selection of rental items and prevents any last-minute stress!

Before reaching out to a rental company, Lauren recommends having a clear vision of your wedding theme, colors and style. She recommends starting a Pinterest board so you have somewhat of an idea to show during your appointment. It's also a good idea to browse through a company's inventory beforehand. "Peek on our website before coming in to help us know more of what you are looking for," she shares.

3. Have a Budget When collaborating with a rental company, effective communication is not only about articulating your preferences but also about managing your budget wisely. According to Lauren, it's essential for couples to openly discuss their expectations, financial constraints and any distinct requirements. Maintaining transparency about your budget allows the rental company to offer precise recommendations tailored to your financial plan while still addressing your specific needs. By fostering candid and honest communication, you can ensure that your rental selections align with your budget, helping you create the wedding of your dreams without breaking the bank!

4.

5.

Schedule a Meeting

Trust the Professional

If the rental company has a showroom, Lauren strongly suggests paying it a visit. Seeing the rental items in person allows you to assess their quality, color and condition. "The pictures online are great but to actually put your vision together and see it in person is a complete game changer," she notes. It's also a great opportunity to get inspired and fine-tune your choices!

Finally, Lauren reminds couples to trust the expertise of the rental company. Rental professionals have experience in executing countless weddings and events, so take their advice seriously! She shares, "We are here to help ensure you have the best day of your life and that your vision comes together."

2023 STYLE SHOOT EVENT

Whimsically Modern

Our Grand Rapids Photographer Collaborative Style Shoot Event

52

WEDDINGDAY

KARA HANES PHOTOGRAPHY

For the third year in a row, WeddingDay has hosted our Photographer Collaborative Style Shoot Event where photographers from all around the Midwest are invited to gain style shoot experience and grow their connections with other experts in the wedding industry. Working with planner EXL Events Co, lead photographer, Kara Hanes Photography, and Grand Rapids, Michigan venue, CityFlatsHotel, this team was truly top-notch! Take a look at the results from this elegant and whimsical day, and read on to see how you can get involved in our next collaborative style shoot!

The Vision Rather than adhering to a predefined theme, Leigha of EXL Events Co was inspired by a single element: the captivating deep teal hue, specifically in the form of a deep teal velvet linen. With this as their starting point, the team embarked on an exciting journey of experimentation, skillfully blending various elements and bold colors to craft a unique aesthetic that effortlessly marries clean lines with striking features. The result is this enchanting and sophisticated shoot that captivates with its modern, whimsical charm!

KARA HANES PHOTOGRAPHY

The Venue Finding the perfect location for a photoshoot is essential, and the decision to use The Ballroom at CityFlatsHotel Grand Rapids proved to be a remarkable choice. This spacious event space provided ample room for our vision, while the ballroom's exquisite features, including marble columns and contemporary black-framed windows, added a touch of sophistication to the setting. We just love the historic elements that can be seen throughout the entire venue! Leigha shares, "The architecture combined with the modern décor made it feel very inviting."

KARA HANES PHOTOGRAPHY

' The Decor Leigha carefully selected all the rental items used to decorate this elaborate space. Since the deep teal velvet linen was the main piece that inspired this shoot, of course it had to take center stage across both the guest and head tables! With this being a fall shoot, Leigha chose to incorporate various shades of orange— which also complements teal—and neutrals to complete the color scheme. For the décor, many unique shapes were included like the modern square plates from AAYS Event Rentals. Golden accents can be seen throughout the décor, and every color has a moment to shine thanks to Kara Hanes Photography’s keen eye!

56

WEDDINGDAY

The Florals When it came to the flowers, Leigha had one specific idea that she wanted to see visualized and Laura of Truer Design made it a dream come true! The hanging element behind the ceremony and head table is a statement floral piece that brought so much beauty into our shoot. It is a stunning display that is sure to draw eyes to the happy couple on a wedding day! Laura used single stem flowers in the display—an emerging trend—that ranged in color to mimic the changing leaves we see in the fall.

WEDDINGDAY

57

The Looks The two long dresses and the jumpsuit all came from America’s Bride, while the short tulle dress was provided by The Second Dress. It's safe to say we are obsessed with each and every one of them! We love how the different styles each bring a unique feel to the shoot. The first bride's ceremony gown is a satin fit and flare dress that breathes elegance into this opulent space. For her reception look, she donned a daring jumpsuit and skirt overlay complete with beautiful leaf-detailed sleeves, making this a perfect outfit for a fanciful fall shoot! Our second model kept things fun in her short and flirty tulle ceremony dress and then wore a more whimsical lace gown with a classic silhouette for her second look. The talented artists at The Pretty Committee played with the models' hair and makeup styles to create two opposite looks. Our first bride was styled using bolder makeup with a pop of teal on her eyelids and beautiful gold accents adorned in her hair, while the second sported a more classic look with natural makeup using a subtle pearlescent touch and a simple, yet romantic bun.

The Cake Last, but not least, we have to talk about that scrumptious cake! In perfect harmony with the square plates and the shoot's distinctive geometric elements, the three-tiered confection stands out with its sharp edges, setting it apart from conventional wedding cake designs. Its pristine white appearance seamlessly complements the overall aesthetics of the shoot, offering a sense of balance. Yet, far from being plain, this cake boasts delicate lace detailing that echoes the intricate patterns featured on one of the gowns showcased in this shoot! 60

Kara Hanes KARA HAN ES PHO TO G RAPHY Kara is a Grand Rapids, Michigan wedding and senior photographer, plus educator. You not only get a photographer but a professional day of coordinator for your photography!

the Old Michigan National Bank building. This gorgeous, historic space offers couples a grand setting with vaulted ceilings, marble columns and a sweeping staircase. It was built in the 1920s and can host up to 200 guests. We also offer a more intimate events space on the ground floor of CityFlatsHotel. Formerly the home of the popular Louis Benton Steakhouse, Events at CityFlatsHotel is an excellent option for smaller weddings (up to 150) searching for a modern atmosphere. It’s also an excellent setting for rehearsal dinners, morning-after brunches and bridal showers. As for our hotel, we are a locallyowned boutique hotel. Our 48 guest rooms are each uniquely designed with eco-friendliness in mind. We joined Choice Hotels Ascend Collection this summer."

WD: MF:

Why should a couple get married here? What attracts couples to your venue? "Our space is the perfect mixture of historic opulence and modern comfort. When couples walk up the grand staircase and gaze into the venue they are in awe of its beauty. We often hear, 'the photos don’t do it justice.' The Ballroom features 1920’s Italian Renaissance styling with elaborate details that include ornate, walnut woodworking, wrought iron railings, marble floors and hand painted ceilings. In addition to our beautiful venues, our location is just unbeatable. Grand Rapids has become a Midwest destination thanks to its award-winning restaurants and breweries, cultural museums and entertainment venues. FEATURED WEDDING

The Real Wedding of M ARINA A N D N ATA S H A H I N TO N

TH E M E :

Celestial Celebration S E AS O N : Fall

VENUE:

Lions & Rabbits Center for the Arts Grand Rapids, MI

Since Marina and Natasha pictured a celestial celebration from the very beginning, their venue needed to fit this moody style that they were envisioning. The dark walls within the venue were the perfect backdrop for the blue and green tones they used for their reception. We love the golden accents around the space that help make those rich colors pop as well as the bright hues of the florals. The happy couple also handselected meaningful records to use as their "guest book" instead of a traditional book. Marina shares, “We certainly put love into every aspect of our reception and I think our guests felt that!”

“Our biggest advice would be to weigh your priorities early on with your partner and get on the same page! Not everything in wedding planning can be a splurge, so deciding what you’re willing to spend more money on versus places where you don’t have to be as 'fancy' is important to decide together! Planning such a big life-changing event can be stressful, but prioritizing and staying organized (lots of spreadsheets) helped me.”
