FROM THE EDITOR One of the benefits of working in the wedding industry is the joy of working with happy couples on a daily basis. It’s hard to imagine anyone being grumpy while trying on wedding gowns or going to a cake tasting. Telling the stories of these real weddings is what we do at WeddingDay Magazine. This spring, Indiana weddings took center stage in the national media. And our story was not told in a positive way. We have always believed that our magazine is an inclusive one that welcomes brides of all races, nationalities and sexual orientations. We also believe that we feature the best vendors in the State of Indiana and Michigan and know that those vendors believe in the power of love and acceptance as much as we do. Of course, we can always do a better job of making sure everyone feels welcome and part of our magazine. Let us know if you have an idea or would like to have your wedding featured. You’ve got to love your friends, especially when they bring two people together as husband and wife. Mutual friends in Chicago introduced Alicia Highsmith and Jeff Mensah. While love at first sight can be debated, this couple knew immediately that there was a spark between them that was special.

The Proposal Jeff, who is from London, proposed during a romantic sunset cruise in Florida. He rented a private gondola for a tour. “While posing for a picture with the beautiful sunset, he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. I was so overjoyed I said ‘yes’ to my best friend,” says Alicia, who is from South Bend.

The Ceremony Alicia said her favorite part of the ceremony was the look on her husband’s face when she was walking down the aisle toward him.
The Reception Carrying through their theme of elegance and a water backdrop (remember the gondola proposal), the two had their reception at Century Center of South Bend with the rushing waters of the St. Joseph River behind them. “Similar to the way Jeff proposed, we were able to experience our special evening ‘on water’ with a beautiful sunset in sight,” says Alicia.

The Dress The bride’s mom and sister took a train to Chicago for a special fall afternoon of wedding dress shopping in the big city. Alicia was fortunate enough to find the perfect dress almost immediately. “As I walked out of the fitting room, my mom/ sister’s facial expressions confirmed my thoughts,” she says. While she didn’t want to make a rash decision, she looked around for about another week and then went back and made the purchase.

The Cake A four-tiered, all-white cake ruffled with petals worked beautifully with the romantic feel of the reception.

The proposal Leah and Steve had looked at a ring while in Seattle and she was suspicious he had bought it for her. But he told her he was not able to get that one and they had to look at some different options. She was fine with that because marrying him meant more than a particular ring. “He then turned and pulled out the ring we saw in Seattle,” Leah says.

the florals The bridal bouquet consisted of ivory and champagne garden roses, dinner plate dahlias, spray roses, seeded eucalyptus, dusty miller and smilax. The bridesmaids’ flowers featured peach garden roses, dahlias and dusty miller. The ceremony aisle was framed with large textured flowing floral arrangements on natural wooden pillars.
the music The couple wanted guests to hear their favorite tunes, so they were asked to list them on the RSVP card. The result was the perfect playlist with every age group dancing the night away!

The ceremony Leah and Steven added meaning to the ceremony by using Steve’s brotherin-law Matty, as the officiant. The couple also incorporated different colored ribbons in a hand-tying ceremony to symbolize two becoming one. They tied Leah’s grandmother’s wedding band onto the end of the braid to honor her grandparents who had been married 60 years.

The venue The ceremony and reception were oh-so-veryconvenient for guests who walked from one to the other at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis. The couple chose the venue because of its downtown location, the museum gardens and the beautiful circular ballroom with mahogany accents.

The CAKE An elegant, simple gold cake topper sat on the top of their light, refreshing sweet treat. The cake was flavored with lemon and raspberry with textured icing adorned with fresh cut flowers in peach and light pink with flowing greenery.

The décor Leah had her heart set on making large Geronimo balloons to save some money and add some whimsy to the big day. She didn’t realize it would take eight hours to cut the tissue paper, staple and inflate the balloons.

Lauren Burke and Thomas Kohr met at Yale University after a freshman picnic for athletes. He was on the crew team and she was on the volleyball team. They both moved to New York City after graduation and sports brought them together once again playing coed volleyball in the NY Urban Professional Volleyball league.

The proposal Twelve years after meeting, Tom surprised Lauren with a proposal in the garden of his childhood home in Linwood, New Jersey. Lauren’s family had flown in from Michigan and stayed out of sight as they waited for Tom to pop the question.

The ceremony “One of my favorite memories of the ceremony is my dad walking me around the walnut tree grove. It was a peaceful, personal moment and we could see everyone waiting for us through the trees,” Lauren says. Parchment bags were transformed into unconventional programs. The bags contained pink and blush rose petals to be tossed at the newlyweds.
The details Oh where do we begin? This is Lauren’s forte and she said her penchant for detail work actually is a genetic trait she inherited from her mother and grandmother. Everyone contributed to the special touches (we can only list a few!): a restored 1945 John Deere tractor; the table number stands made of reclaimed wood from the big barn; caramel corn from the Ocean City boardwalk; the signature cocktails: Lolo (the bride’s nickname) Smash and Tommy Manhattan, and the antipasto charcuterie course as a nod to the couple’s picnic at Versailles. 42

The lemonade stand highlighting Mimi’s famous homemade lemonade. In fact, we just love Mimi and Papa and everything about the way they transformed their property into a rustic version of wedded bliss. The restored blacksmith shop, the windmill, gardens, oh my!

The florals French zinc market buckets filled with loose flowers created a farmers market style display perfect for the venue. Four 14-foot river birch trees brought the outside into the tent and now are planted on the farm.

the dress Lauren found the Monique Lhuillier gown while visiting her sister in Scottsdale, Arizona. “When I tried on ‘the one,’ for once my dad was speechless,” she says. The dress features a beaded floral and a leafy-pattern bodice. The fern detail was used throughout the décor on everything from stamps on the invitations to lush Boston and Tiger ferns located throughout the ceremony and reception.

The family farm The Family Farm: Love of family brought the wedding to Lauren’s maternal grandparents’ farm – The Fisher Farm in Franklin, Indiana. The 60-acre farm has been in the family since 1865 and was the site of some of Lauren’s most treasured childhood memories, including picking blackberries and strawberries right from the garden and playing hide-and-go-seek in the cornfields.
The color palette The nine bridesmaids matched the Indiana summer sky wearing variegated shades of blue, Lauren’s favorite color. Navy menu cards tied with twine and fern and vintage French ticking striped dinner napkins adorned the farm tables.

the cake The cake - a stunning five-tier creation combining ruffles, flowers and details from the bridal gown - completed the look. The groom’s cake featured a Yale bulldog rowing a Longport Beach Patrol lifeguard boat.

The Indiana Chapter of the Association of Bridal Consultants (ABC) celebrated its annual event benefiting the American Cancer Society at Sahm’s Atrium at the Tower on March 7th and 8th. Now in its 11th year, this event included a weekend of designer tablescapes created by Indiana’s elite florists, wedding planners and event professionals. Specialty tablescapes and vignettes for weddings, wedding events (bachelorette parties and showers) and social events filled the space for the weekend celebration. Popular wedding themes including the 1920s Gatsby inspiration and barn style wedding took center stage, along with cutting-edge looks for couples with more contemporary styles in mind. This year, there were additional tables to honor non-profit charities close to individual designer’s passions, adding another layer of depth to the themes of the event. Proceeds from ticket sales and other contributions were donated to the American Cancer Society to honor ABC member Betty Jackson. the VISION For our one-of-a-kind inspiration shoot, we wanted to take the current trends of 2015 and turn them up a notch. With blush being the color of the year for many brides, we focused on a beautiful ombre to blush palette with pops of gold and the surprise of polka dots.

The DÊcor A lavish king’s table greeted guests walking into the reception. From the large, crystal floral arrangements down to the gold-dotted menu cards, every detail delighted the senses. Large, gold foil balloons spelled out L-O-V-E and soft pink uplighting enhanced the mirrored walls and the high ceilings.

The gowns One dress was not enough for this shoot! The three gowns included a lace trumpet gown with a detachable tulle skirt by Beccar; a tulle fit and flare gown by Pronovias, and a tulle trumpet gown with silver threading, beading and pearls, also by Pronovias.
