WELCOME TO THE LIED CENTER
FOR PERFORMING ARTS! WELCOME TO ANOTHER SPECTACULAR SEASON OF MUSIC, THEATER, DANCE, AND MORE AT THE LIED CENTER! There has never been a better time to enjoy life, escape from the world for a few hours, and experience the greatest artists in the world right here in Nebraska. The 2026–2027 season is one of the most entertaining in Lied Center history, filled with opportunities to laugh, celebrate, be inspired, and have the time of your life with family and friends. Headlining the season is the return of Hamilton, the most popular performing arts event in Lancaster County history. An extraordinary year also includes Yächtley Crëw, The Temptations, Mamma Mia!, SHUCKED, Riverdance, Trombone Shorty, and so much more. This season also gives us the opportunity to celebrate Wynton Marsalis, an iconic artist deeply connected with the Lied Center’s history. We are honored to welcome the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis during his final season as Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Music Director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. His extraordinary influence on jazz, arts education, and American culture has spanned generations. Beyond the entertainment, this season features exceptional performances you might normally expect to travel to New York, Paris, or London to experience. Ballet Hispánico’s Carmen.maquia, Italy’s NoGravity, Japanese ensemble Kodo, and acclaimed pianists Isata Kanneh-Mason and Daniil Trifonov are just a few of the remarkable artists coming to Lincoln. It is also an exciting year for the Lied Center building itself. With the steel structure of the Building the Future project complete, we are looking ahead to the completion of this historic transformation in fall 2027. Please also consider joining the Friends of Lied. Your support helps bring extraordinary artists to Nebraska, creates life-changing opportunities for young people, and keeps the Lied Center strong for generations to come. It’s going to be an amazing year. Life is short. Gather your friends. Buy the tickets. Have the time of your life.

HIXSON-LIED
LEGACY Ernst F. Lied and Christina Hixson have transformed the lives of millions of Americans through the Lied Foundation Trust with philanthropic contributions of more than $300 million to over 125 different organizations in seven states.
Born in 1906, Ernst F. Lied was a 1927 graduate of the University of Nebraska. He achieved business success as the owner of a Buick dealership in Omaha and as a real estate magnate in Las Vegas. Having no living relatives, he established a trust in 1972, and upon his death in 1980, his secretary and business partner Christina Hixson was appointed to administer the foundation.
“
The first gift from the Lied Foundation Trust was a $10 million matching grant to build the Lied Center for Performing Arts in the early 1980s at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in memory of Lied’s parents, Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. The Lied Foundation Trust went on to support many projects in Nebraska, including Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo Lied Jungle, the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City, and the Lied Transplant Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
T HE LIED CENTER’S MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IS TO INTRODUCE INDIVIDUALS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS TO ENRICHING AND DIVERSE PERFORMING ARTS EXPERIENCES. - Christina Hixson Christina Hixson first partnered with Lied in 1944 as his secretary at the Omaha Buick dealership, and she followed him to Las Vegas as a business partner in 1960. After Lied’s death, Hixson became the executrix of his estate and continues to serve as the Lied Foundation’s sole trustee. It was Hixson who made the decision to support the construction of the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In 2000, she also announced a gift of $18 million to support UNL’s Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. One of the last major gifts of the Lied Foundation Trust was a $2.5 million grant for the construction of the Lied Center’s new multipurpose space, the Lied Commons, which opened in 2012. Together, Lied and Hixson built a multimillion-dollar empire that has positively impacted the lives of millions of people in Nebraska and across the nation.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT The Lied Center for Performing Arts honors and acknowledges that it resides on the traditional and unceded territories of the Pawnee, Ponca, Otoe-Missouria, Umo nho n , Dakota, Lakota, Arapaho, Cheyenne and Kaw Peoples, as well as the relocated Ho Chunk (Winnebago), Iowa and Sac and Fox Peoples. Congratulations to the Lied Center for creating a spectacular season that is sure to entertain, thrill, and inspire audiences of all ages. LEIRION GAYLOR BAIRD MAYOR OF LINCOLN
“
Here in Lincoln, it can feel easy to take for granted the many popular musicals, intricate ballets, captivating plays, and other incredible performances we are able to witness each year at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. After all, the Lied has been here for 36 years, serving as a hub for high-quality programming and world-class performances since it opened in 1990. But as my family and I return to the Lied year after year, whether it’s for time-honored holiday traditions like Mannheim Steamroller or exciting, family-friendly Broadway hits like Disney’s Frozen, I’m reminded of how important it is to recognize how fortunate we are to have a place like this right here at home. That’s why Union Bank is proud to support the Lied Center’s mission of educating, inspiring, and entertaining the people of Nebraska through the performing arts. If you are so inclined and have the means, I encourage you to join us in supporting the Lied Center to help ensure our community will be able to enjoy moments like these and create lasting memories for years to come. JASON MUHLEISEN, PRESIDENT AND CEO, UNION BANK AND TRUST
“
The Lied Center plays a special role in Lincoln by bringing people together to share experiences that move us, challenge us, and often remind us of what matters most. For the older adults served in Immanuel’s Lincoln communities, access to music, theater, dance, and other performances can spark memories, encourage connection, and nourish the spirit. Those benefits aren't limited by age. The arts enrich the lives of people across our community, and we're proud to support the Lied Center and all it brings to Lincoln. TERI VOSICKY, REGIONAL RETIREMENT LIVING CONSULTANT, IMMANUEL COMMUNITIES

It’s my honor and pleasure to serve at the President of the Friends of Lied Board of Directors this year. When the Lied Center for Performing Arts opened back in 1990, thoughtful people decided to form Friends of Lied at the same time as a way of raising funds to sustain the longevity of this impressive hub for culture and the arts. Today, the Friends of Lied has more than 1,200 members from across the state, and this year, there are 59 members of the Board of Directors. The Board promotes membership and hosts fundraising events so we can provide funds to the Lied Center. Last spring, we donated $675,000! This is a particularly exciting year for the Lied. In addition to the wonderful lineup of performances, we’ll get to witness beautiful and important updates to the building, thanks to the Building the Future campaign. Even if you are like me and didn’t get introduced to live theatre until later in life, you know how inspiring it can be. Live theatre brings people together, opens minds, and enhances humanity. Become a Friends of Lied member today to help the Lied Center for Performing Arts continue to bring high-caliber live shows to our community and state-wide. CLOVER FREDERICK, PRESIDENT, FRIENDS OF LIED

The Lied Center for Performing Arts is an important partner to the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, providing our students, faculty and staff opportunities to experience world-class artists on stage and in the classroom. These experiences allow our students to see what it takes to perform and create at the highest level while inspiring new ways of thinking about their own artistic practice. The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts is committed to fostering greater collaboration and interdisciplinarity across the arts. The Lied Center plays an important role in that vision, bringing together artists and audiences from diverse disciplines and creating opportunities for our students to encounter new perspectives, ideas and creative approaches. These connections help prepare our students for a world in which the boundaries between music, theatre, dance, visual art, design and emerging media arts continue to evolve. Our deepest gratitude to Miss Christina Hixson and the Lied Foundation Trust for their vision in creating this remarkable facility and for their enduring support of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Enjoy the performances at the Lied Center this season. We also invite you to visit arts.unl.edu to learn more about our student and faculty performances, exhibitions and other creative work. MATT & CLOVER FREDERICK
Matt and Clover Frederick are pleased to be Season Lieders supporting the 202627 season of performing arts at the Lied Center! We love Broadway and have been fortunate to take our kids to see shows in Chicago, NYC and London. But we're even more grateful that we can see Broadwaycaliber theatre in our own community. IT IS OUR PLEASURE TO PLAY A ROLE IN BRINGING WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES TO LINCOLN.
BILL BUNTAIN
Returning to Lincoln after leaving in 1985 to launch a career in the music business, Bill is excited to support the Lied Center and its 2026-2027 Season. A graduate of Lincoln High and UNL, he spent the past 36 years on the road managing finance and logistics for live concert tours for a range of rock and pop artists. His first tour was with the B-52s Cosmic Tour in 1990, and over the years he’s worked with Ozzy Osbourne, Janet Jackson, CHER, P!NK, and Tina Turner. Growing up in Lincoln, we didn’t have a dedicated performing arts center, so I saw touring Broadway shows at the Stuart Theater and Pershing Auditorium. We often had to travel to Omaha or Kansas City to see the most current productions. My family also produced the summer musicals at Pinewood Bowl in the late 1970s, and I probably caught the entertainment bug during those summers. Since moving back to Lincoln part-time in 2022, Bill has regularly attended performances at the Lied Center and continues to be amazed by both the quality and quantity of the programming. Whether you’re seeing a play for the first time, or revisiting one of your favorites, seeing a show at the Lied is a reminder of how good it feels to experience something live—and together. I am especially excited to be able to support the Adam Pascal & Anthony Rapp performance this season. I first saw RENT on Broadway in June 1996. Being able to see the original cast in the first few months of RENT’s record-breaking run was like watching fireworks go off. There was so much raw talent on stage. My path crossed with Anthony Rapp in summer 1998 while I was on tour in London when he was one of the four original cast members who were part of the opening RENT cast in the West End. We have stayed in touch over the years and it will be great to have him back in Lincoln.
LARRY & LUCY BUNTAIN COMINE
Larry and Lucy are proud to return as Lied Center Season Lieders for the 2026–2027 season! They have been Lied supporters and leaders for many years, including as Season Lieders for the past several seasons. Lucy serves as the Lied Center’s Senior Development Director Emerita. She has made a major impact in building the Lied Center’s artistic programs, including the Glenn Korff Broadway Series and the Lied’s Command Performance of American Ballet Theatre with Misty Copeland and the St. Louis Symphony. During her time with the University of Nebraska Foundation, Lucy played a lead role in developing the arts at UNL, including the creation of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts and much more. She has a passion for Broadway, dance, and a wide variety of art forms. LARRY AND LUCY ENJOY SUPPORTING AND ADVOCATING FOR NEBRASKA’S PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, AND THEIR POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE LIED WILL LAST LONG INTO THE FUTURE.
RYAN GROSS & BETH BARGER
The Lied Center for Performing Arts has always held a special place in Ryan and Beth's hearts and lives. They are honored to be Season Lieders and support the Lied Center for Performing Arts and all the artists, creators and storytellers who perform there. The arts have always been an important part of their lives and a gateway to expanding their understanding of the world and the amazing artists who create in it each day. As a child Ryan would listen to his grandfather play the dulcimer by ear without any formal music training. He would play for those in his community including those in retirement homes, community and cultural events and for his family. He loved bringing people together through music. Beth has been involved in music and the arts her entire life. She was a member of multiple bands in school, and her children have all followed by learning to play musical instruments and all enjoy visual arts and theater. Her eldest daughter is currently enrolled in the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts. THE LIED CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS BRINGS WORLD-CLASS, CULTURALLY DIVERSE ARTS TO OUR COMMUNITY. THEY ARE PROUD TO SUPPORT IT AND HOPE ALL THAT ATTEND THESE SHOWS ARE INSPIRED BY THESE GREAT ARTISTS AND PERFORMERS.

Both lifelong Nebraskans, Karen grew up in Lincoln and graduated from UNL and Chuck grew up in York and is a University of Minnesota graduate. We have been honored to participate in various Lied organizations, including as members of the Lied Center's 25th Anniversary Sterling Society. Karen served on the Friends of Lied board and served as its president in 2008-2009 and is currently on the board of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Chuck served on the Statewide Advisory Board and as its president in 2015-2016. We have enjoyed attending and encouraging friends to enjoy the Lied experience. The Lied's commitment to making the performing arts experiences available to all through programs like Arts Across Nebraska and subsidized ticket prices makes the Lied Center the go-to destination for performing arts in Nebraska. WE WANT ALL NEBRASKANS TO HAVE THE AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY ALL THAT THE LIED CENTER MAKES POSSIBLE.
DOUG & VIKKI KOTIL
The Kotils are longtime friends and supporters of the Lied Center. In 1985, Vikki first became involved as a member of the then, newly formed, Statewide Program Advisory Council for the Lied Center for Performing Arts. She later joined the staff of the Lied Center Project, under the direction of Shelia Griffin, during the facility's construction and initial program development. Vikki recalls this as such a very exciting time to personally witness the brick and mortar being transformed into the world-class performing arts facility that it is today. She adds that from the onset the mission of the Lied Center was to increase opportunities for all Nebraskans to experience the highest quality performances and its events. Doug added that he and Vikki are happy to continue their support as an advocate and Season Lieder because they feel truly fortunate to benefit from the efforts of those visionaries who made the Lied Center a reality. Today, the Lied Center is one of the top 100 theaters in the world. As we attend this season’s performances, IT IS A PRIORITY FOR US TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAMS AND EVENTS AS IT REMAINS EVIDENT THAT THE LIED CENTER CONTINUES TO ENHANCE AND ENRICH THE CULTURAL EXPERIENCES OF GENERATIONS OF NEBRASKANS.
ART & CHRIS ZYGIELBAUM
Taking great honor and pleasure in their involvement with the Lied Center, Art and Chris Zygielbaum support programs, take part in special events, and contribute time and energy to the Lied. Art is the past president of the Lied Center Statewide Advisory Board, and Chris is a former Friends of Lied board member. Art and Chris can be found at the Lied Center for more than 20 performances a year and often choose to support programs that have exceptional artistic merit and social justice impact. These include the play 1984 In the 2019-2020 season, the Mosaic Circle’s Everytime I Talk About and the incredible ABT Across America in the 2020-2021 Season. A number of years ago, they supported a youth play from Australia called Hitler’s Daughter that explored issues of Nazi Germany through a fictional plot. This production, in particular, had a significant impact on local youth who were given the opportunity to experience the show. The Zygielbaums also sponsored My Antonia, Trevor Noah, The Capitol Steps and many other memorable and meaningful programs in past seasons. BECAUSE OF THEIR DEEP BELIEF IN THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LIED CENTER TO OUR COMMUNITY AND STATE, THE ZYGIELBAUMS ARE COMMITTED TO HELPING ASSURE ITS CONTINUED SUCCESS.

We are thrilled to support the Lied Center in its mission to "educate, inspire and entertain" as Season Lieders for the 2026–2027 season. We have formed many wonderful memories with our children at Lied Center performances, and we appreciate the Lied's efforts to extend this opportunity to all students in our community and beyond. The Lied provides unique and meaningful outreach and educational experiences — from a 9-year-old's eye-opening first visit to a Lied Center matinee, to the chance for a UNL student to hone their craft in a master class, and so much more. What do you do with a chance? In the 1980’s Lincoln leaders were discussing the need for a new performance center. An opportunity arose and the leaders moved quickly. Woody Varner, president of the University of Nebraska Foundation and Sheila Griffin, Lied Project Director, led the statewide fundraising campaign. The Lied Foundation Trust provided the generous lead gift. This launched a successful campaign of public and private donations. The groundbreaking was January 6, 1986, where the center was dedicated as the Lied Center for Performing Arts in memory of Ernst and Ida Lied. In 1989 it was my honor to serve as the first director of the Friends of Lied. Amazing volunteers from across Nebraska worked together to promote and fundraise for the new Lied Center for Performing Arts. Everyone was so excited to receive the 1990 program announcement of the first season and to visit the stunning interior. Over 10,000 attended the open house. Think of the thousands entertained, educated, and inspired in this beautiful hall the past 36 seasons. As in the beginning, it takes all of us… ticket holders, individual donors, corporate sponsors, and our public institutions to keep the dream alive for future generations. I remember learning that ticket sales cover only about 50% of a performance center’s budget. Our Friends of Lied and the Lied staff work diligently to promote the fundraising effort for the added 50%. On behalf of the Advisory Board for the Lied Center for Performing Arts, I thank you for your generosity and dedication for so many years. If you have not had the chance to become a Friend of Lied, please review the opportunities in your program and join us. In the early 1980’s Lincoln leaders had a chance to fulfill a community dream. What do you do with a chance? You take it. It just may lead to something incredible. See you at the Lied! BARBARA BARTLE, PRESIDENT OF THE STATEWIDE ADVISORY BOARD

The label is dedicated to releasing new studio and live recordings as well as archival recordings from past Jazz at Lincoln Center performances, and its first record— Live in Cuba, recorded on a historic 2010 trip to Havana by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis—was released in October 2015. Big Band Holidays was released in December 2015, The Abyssinian Mass came out in March 2016, The Music of John Lewis was released in March 2017, and the JLCO’s Handful of Keys came out in September 2017. Blue Engine’s most recent album releases include 2020’s A Swingin’ Sesame Street Celebration and 2021’s The Democracy Suite featuring the JLCO Septet with Wynton Marsalis. WYNTON MARSALIS Wynton Marsalis (Music Director, Trumpet) is the Managing and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC). Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961, he is the son of renowned jazz pianist and music educator, Ellis Marsalis, Jr. Marsalis was gifted his first trumpet at age six by Al Hirt; soon thereafter, he began playing in New Orleans’ famed Fairview Baptist Church Band led by banjoist Danny Barker. However, it wasn’t until he turned twelve that Marsalis began to formally train on the trumpet and perform in bands throughout the city, from the New Orleans Philharmonic and New Orleans Youth Orchestra to funk bands, concert bands, and small jazz ensembles. As a teenager, his passion for music rapidly escalated. In 1979, at the age of seventeen, Marsalis moved to New York City to study classical trumpet at The Juilliard School. Yet he quickly entrenched himself in New York’s effervescent jazz scene, launching his career with the legendary Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. At just nineteen, Marsalis hit the road with his own band—he has been touring the world ever since. From 1981 to the time of this writing, he has performed 5,328 concerts in 856 distinct cities and 66 countries around the world. Marsalis made his recording debut in 1982 and has since recorded over 110 jazz and classical albums, four alternative records, and released five DVDs. Marsalis is the winner of nine GRAMMY Awards, and his jazz oratorio Blood on the Fields was the first jazz composition to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. He remains the only musician to win a GRAMMY Award in two categories—jazz and classical— during the same year (1983, 1984). Marsalis has solidified himself as an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, and advocate of American culture. As a composer, his body of work includes over 600 original songs, 11 dance scores, 13 suites, 4 symphonies, 2 chamber pieces, 2 string quartets, a jazz oratorio, a fanfare, and concertos for violin, tuba, trumpet, and most recently, for orchestra. Included in this rich body of compositions is a multitude of works written specifically to feature the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO): The Democracy! Suite (2021); The Ever Fonky Lowdown (2020); The Jungle- Symphony No. 4 (2016); Swing Symphony- Symphony No. 3 (2010); The Abyssinian Mass (2008); Congo Square (2006); Suite for Human Nature (2004); All Rise- Symphony No. 1 (1999). To date, Marsalis has released 29 full-length albums and nine singles with the JLCO on Jazz at Lincoln Center’s in-house label, Blue Engine Records.
WYNTON MARSALIS (CONT.) Marsalis is also a globally respected teacher and spokesperson for music education. He led the effort to construct Jazz at Lincoln Center’s home–Frederick P. Rose Hall–the first education, performance, and broadcast facility devoted specifically to jazz. At JALC, Marsalis spearheads educational programs for students of all ages, including Jazz for Young People™ concerts and the annual Essentially Ellington jazz band competition, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025. Marsalis is the Founding Director of Jazz Studies at The Juilliard School, and President of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation. Marsalis has produced several educational series for public broadcast. He was the writer and host of the video series Marsalis on Music, the radio series Making the Music, and the weekly conversation series Skain’s Domain. He has written and co-written 10 books, including two children’s books: Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp! and Jazz ABZ: An A to Z Collection of Jazz Portraits. Between 2011 and 2014, he delivered six groundbreaking lectures at Harvard University entitled Hidden in Plain View: Meanings in American Music. And in 2023, he delivered the highly esteemed Nexus Lecture in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Marsalis was appointed Messenger of Peace by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2001 and awarded The National Medal of Arts (2005), The National Medal of Humanities (2016), and the Praemium Imperiale for Music from the Japan Art Association (2023)—Japan’s highest honor for the arts. In December 2021, Marsalis and JALC were awarded the Key to New York City by Mayor Bill de Blasio. Marsalis has received honorary doctorates from 44 top universities around the world, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and Tulane University in his hometown of New Orleans. Wynton Marsalis’ core beliefs and foundation for living are based on the principles of jazz. He promotes individual creativity (improvisation), collective cooperation (swing), gratitude and good manners (sophistication), and facing adversity with persistent optimism (the blues). He joined Atlanta-based piano legend Johnny O’Neal’s quintet in 1991. After moving to New York in 1994, Sherman quickly connected with the fertile and vital scene at Smalls, where he was a regular until 1997. Here Sherman caught the attention of Blue Note Records, for which he recorded his first two albums, Full Circle and Big Mama’s Biscuits, released in 1996 and 1998 respectively. During the Smalls period, Sherman also toured the U.S. and the Caribbean with the Boys Choir of Harlem in 1995; was a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra from 1995 to 1997 and then rejoined again; recorded and toured with Marcus Roberts and participated in the incomparable Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Program during those same years; and began his four-year stint with Roy Hargrove in 1997. After departing Roy Hargrove’s ensemble, Sherman shifted his primary focus to his own group. Although this was his primary commitment, Irby took the opportunity to join the final ensemble of the peerless Elvin Jones in 2004, and after Elvin’s passing, joined Papo Vazquez’s Pirates Troubadours. From 2003-2011, Sherman was the regional director for JazzMasters Workshop, a mentoring program for young children. He has served as Artist-in-Residence for Jazz Camp West, and an instructor for the Monterey Jazz Festival Band Camp. He is also a former board member for CubaNOLA Collective. Recognizing the shift in economics of the record industry, Sherman left Blue Note to form Black Warrior Records, releasing Black Warrior, Faith, Organ Starter, Live at The Otto Club, Cerulean Canvas and Andy Farber’s, This Could Be the Start of Something Big. Sherman, along with most members of the JLCO, has arranged much of the vast library of music that they have performed over the past 16 years. He has also been commissioned to compose new works, including Twilight Sounds, his Dante-inspired ballet, Inferno and Musings of Cosmic Stuff. Even with the orchestra’s busy schedule, Sherman was a regular member of the McCoy Tyner Quartet, and continues to perform with his own group, Momentum.

Working a lot in the Chicago scene, Nimmer decided to leave school and make the big move to New York City where he immediately emerged in the New York scene. In 2005, a year after moving to New York City, he became a member of bo`th the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Quintet. Nimmer has performed and recorded with Jimmy Cobb, Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, Renée Fleming, Houston Person, Fareed Haque, George Benson, Lewis Nash, and many more. His first musical experiences were hearing the sanctified and soulful Gospel music his parents (Ann and Bobby), grandparents (J.C.) and older sister (Angela) sang in church. While attending the University of North Florida on a music scholarship, he won the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Trumpet competition. In 1991, Printup’s life changed when he met his mentor, the great pianist Marcus Roberts, who introduced him to Wynton Marsalis. He subsequently joined Roberts as his road manager/understudy for 2 years. 1993 was a banner year for Printup. He performed for the first time with Marsalis in the latter’s collaboration with the New York City Ballet, “Jazz in Six Syncopated Movements” which led to Printup’s induction into the then Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Also, during this time, Printup was noticed by jazz legend, Betty Carter. Ms. Carter invited Printup to be in her inaugural and prestigious “Betty Carter Jazz Ahead” group, performing in a series of concerts at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Printup has performed and or recorded with Marcus Roberts, Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Guru, Madeline Peyroux, Ted Nash, Dianne Schuur, Cyrus Chestnut, and Wycliffe Gordon, among many others. He has recorded over 15 records as a leader, including his most recent “Gentle Rain” (2020) featuring his wife, Riza Printup, on the Harp. He made a big screen appearance in the 1999 movie Playing by Heart and recorded on the film’s soundtrack. Education is extremely important to Printup, as he is an in-demand clinician teaching middle schools, high schools, and colleges across the U.S. and abroad. He also holds the position of Adjunct Professor of Music at Montclair State University. August 22nd has been declared “Marcus Printup Day” in his hometown of Conyers, Georgia.

Established in 2016, the GK (Glenn Korff) Platinum Artist Series enables the Lied Center for Performing Arts to bring the most iconic Broadway and popular artists to Nebraska. The series, named in honor of benefactor and UNL alumnus Glenn Korff, has featured iconic artists including Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth, Leslie Odom Jr., and a landmark collaboration between American Ballet Theatre and the St. Louis Symphony featuring Misty Copeland. “The Lied Center’s programming has been transformed thanks to Glenn’s generosity,” said Bill Stephan, Executive Director of the Lied Center. “This gift allows the Lied Center to bring some of the most accomplished performers in the world to Lincoln, fulfilling Glenn’s dream to enlighten and entertain families and generations of Nebraskans for years to come.” Korff’s passion for the performing arts began on campus as a member of Kosmet Klub, a male musical and comedy ensemble for which he served as a set designer. His experiences with theater at the University were among his most cherished memories. The Lied Center was selected to receive support with the hope that stellar performances by some of Broadway’s biggest stars might bring students and Nebraskans the same joy and enrichment that his involvement with musical theater brought to his life. “Glenn’s heartfelt generosity has created an enduring legacy at the University of Nebraska of enriching the human spirit through the arts, and we are forever grateful,” said Chancellor Emeritus Ronnie Green.
“I am honored to be able to make this contribution in order to provide future programs that will enlighten and entertain families and generations of Nebraskans for years to come.” - Glenn Korff

ANABETH COX IN MEMORY OF TED COX
ART & CHRIS ZYGIELBAUM
I dedicate this Spotlight Sponsorship in honor of my late husband, Edwin “Ted” Cox, an accomplished musician, writer, and passionate advocate for the arts. Ted believed deeply in the power of music to educate, inspire, and connect communities. Supporting this performance is a meaningful way to celebrate his legacy while also recognizing the Lied Center’s extraordinary commitment to presenting world-class artists and enriching the cultural life of Nebraska. These include the play 1984 In the 2019-2020 season, the Mosaic Circle’s Everytime I Talk About and the incredible ABT Across America in the 20202021 Season.

JO ADAMS
Year after year, the Lied Center presents top-tier entertainment and programming that thrills audiences. From Hamilton to Book of Morman to Wynton Marsalis, we continue to see everything New York & larger cities have to offer right here in Lincoln. Since I joined the community in 1993, the Lied Center has been a constant source of entertainment. Even through the pandemic, the Lied Center found a way to bring joy into our lives. I’m grateful more memories will be made with our friends and family during another year of wonderful comedy, dance, jazz & Broadway musicals at the Lied Center.
We first discovered jazz while attending live recordings of Billy Taylor’s jazz program for NPR and became fascinated by the music, the different styles and ideas behind it, and especially the stories of the many artists who have made jazz what it is today. Over the years, Wynton Marsalis and Lincoln Center Jazz have helped expand our horizons and appreciation of jazz even further. It is always a joy to experience its musicality. Its shows are always fun and educational.
JOHN GRADY & NANCY KING
We are glad to be able to sponsor this performance especially since this will be Wynton’s last appearance on the Lied’s stage. We will miss the incredible sounds that come from his trumpet.
JAZZ
CIRCLE JOHN GRADY & NANCY KING We first discovered jazz while attending live recordings of Billy Taylor’s jazz program for NPR and became fascinated by the music, the different styles and ideas behind it, and especially the stories of the many artists who have made jazz what it is today. Although neither of us consider ourselves musically talented, we have developed a deep appreciation for the remarkable diversity of jazz—from intimate small groups to big bands, and from ragtime, bebop, and swing to hot club jazz and beyond. We have been especially amazed by the musicians’ ability to improvise, create and compose music in real time while simultaneously navigating the principles and structure of music. And they do it all without an eraser! We are delighted to support jazz performances at the Lied Center and greatly appreciate the way it brings such a wide variety of outstanding artists and performances to the community, creating opportunities for people to enjoy, discover, and be inspired by the arts. DR. JON HINRICHS Jon Hinrichs and Donna W. Woods are longtime Lincoln community leaders and supporters. Jon is a retired physician, as well as a musician who has especially enjoyed playing jazz and old standards. He has been a long-standing supporter of the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra and Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra. Donna has a well-known passion for visual arts and enjoys performing arts programs. She was part of the Lied Center’s founding team of community leaders, playing a role in the interior design of the venue in the late 1980s.
KATHERINE STARACE I am pleased to again be a sponsor in the Lied Center’s Jazz Circle. The Lied Center continues to bring great jazz musicians to Lincoln. In addition to the fabulous concerts, I appreciate the opportunity the Lied provides for local students to meet and learn from jazz masters. I myself am not a musician, but have for many years enjoyed listening to music, especially jazz, which is such a part of American history. I am glad to support the Lied Center because it is a jewel of Lincoln’s cultural scene with its diversity of programing. Not just jazz, but also dance, theater, and all kinds of music from around the world. Supporting the Lied is one of my priorities. JOHN & LAURIE TAVLIN - NEBRASKA DIAMOND John and Laurie Tavlin have been dedicated supporters of jazz music for over 50 years. John founded the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra in 1975, the Johnny Manhattan Orchestra in 2016 and the Metro Jazz Quintet in 2023. As a jazz trumpeter John has performed with many jazz greats and has been a featured soloist at legendary jazz venues throughout the United States and Great Britain. Together with their company, Nebraska Diamond, John and Laurie have established and funded a Graduate Fellowship in Jazz Trumpet and an Excellence in Jazz Performance Scholarship Fund supporting jazz programs at both UNL and UNO. As Jazz Circle members they are committed to the growth and appreciation of jazz music, a uniquely creative and important American art form. BEVERLY WESTERBERG For Bev Westerberg, jazz is a celebration of artistry, creativity, and connection. A longtime supporter of the Lied Center and former Friends of Lied Board President, she has always believed in the power of the arts to enrich lives and build community. Bev is especially inspired by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, whose musicianship, energy, and commitment to excellence embody everything she loves about jazz. Their performances honor tradition while keeping the art form vibrant and relevant. As a Jazz Circle member this season, Bev is excited to help bring exceptional jazz experiences to Nebraska audiences. She is proud of the Lied Center’s impact and hopes her support will help ensure its important work continues for years to come.

MORE THAN A PERFORMANCE:
YO-YO MA RETURNS
TO THE LIED When University of Nebraska–Lincoln freshman cello performance major Cordelia Grey learned she might have an opportunity to meet Yo-Yo Ma during his visit to the Lied Center, she kept her expectations modest. “I was so excited just to get to hear him play,” Grey recalled. What happened instead became an experience she will carry for the rest of her life. Grey and fellow students spent nearly 45 minutes with Ma before his Lied Center performance. Then came a surprise none of them expected: each student was invited to play Ma’s 1733 Montagnana cello, an instrument valued in the millions. “It was absolutely incredible,” Grey said. “We had no idea we were going to get to play it.”
Grey admitted she was nervous about meeting one of her musical heroes. Those nerves disappeared quickly when Ma expressed being just as excited to meet the students as they were to see him. Ma also offered advice Grey put to use almost immediately, notating suggestions and tips on the sheet music she was using in an upcoming recital while encouraging her to focus on enjoying the music and expressing what she was feeling. Grey applied his advice at her solo recital and later told audience members who complimented her performance, “Yeah, I got that advice from Yo-Yo Ma.” That spirit of connection continued during intermission. When Ma learned that a group of high school orchestra students were in the audience, he invited them backstage to learn about their musical experiences and connect with them about the program he was performing. For Lied Center audiences and supporters, these moments demonstrate the reach of artist outreach. Bringing the world’s greatest performers to Nebraska creates extraordinary nights in the concert hall, but the impact can extend far beyond the performance itself. Students gain access to artists they have studied and admired, receiving encouragement and inspiration at pivotal moments in their development. Cordelia Grey arrived hoping simply to see Yo-Yo Ma up close. She left with his advice, an unforgettable experience playing his cello and a new perspective on finding joy in making music.
BEYOND THE STAGE: SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR BUILDS CONNECTIONS ACROSS LINCOLN A full week with the Soweto Gospel Choir brought music, movement and connection to spaces across Lincoln. The internationally celebrated ensemble’s return to the Lied Center included far more than a performance, with residency activities reaching young people, musicians and community members throughout the city. At the Malone Center, choir members introduced children to South African games, movement and dance, filling the room with jumping, clapping and laughter. At First-Plymouth Church, members of the ensemble worked with Abendmusik singers to learn a song together, bringing musicians from different backgrounds into the same space through a shared love of singing. One of the week’s most meaningful encounters took place at the Lancaster County Youth Services Center. The visit created a powerful connection between the young people and choir members. Youth Services Center staff shared the effects of these residencies can continue for days with participants becoming more positive and hopeful after the artists leave. The residency also reached the next generation of Nebraska musicians. Approximately 250 University of Nebraska–Lincoln music students gathered for a special convocation with the choir. Some learned a song directly from the artists and, that evening, joined Soweto Gospel Choir on the Lied Center stage to perform the finale together. Sharing South African heritage was central to the artists’ approach. Soweto Gospel Choir singer and choir administrator Bongani Ncube explained, “Singing is the same all over, but other people do it differently and they use their heritage.” He also hoped the experience would inspire young musicians to see where their own love of singing might take them. For Lied Center audiences and supporters, this is the impact artist outreach can create. A world-class performance may fill the Lied Center for one evening, but a residency carries that experience into community organizations, classrooms and the lives of young people who may never otherwise have this kind of access. Through these encounters, visiting artists become more than performers. They become teachers, collaborators and sources of inspiration, and the impact of their time in Nebraska can continue long after the final applause.
