WELCOME TO THE LIED CENTER

FOR PERFORMING ARTS! WELCOME TO ANOTHER SPECTACULAR SEASON OF MUSIC, THEATER, DANCE, AND MORE AT THE LIED CENTER! There has never been a better time to enjoy life, escape from the world for a few hours, and experience the greatest artists in the world right here in Nebraska. The 2026–2027 season is one of the most entertaining in Lied Center history, filled with opportunities to laugh, celebrate, be inspired, and have the time of your life with family and friends. Headlining the season is the return of Hamilton, the most popular performing arts event in Lancaster County history. An extraordinary year also includes Yächtley Crëw, The Temptations, Mamma Mia!, SHUCKED, Riverdance, Trombone Shorty, and so much more. This season also gives us the opportunity to celebrate Wynton Marsalis, an iconic artist deeply connected with the Lied Center’s history. We are honored to welcome the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis during his final season as Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Music Director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. His extraordinary influence on jazz, arts education, and American culture has spanned generations. Beyond the entertainment, this season features exceptional performances you might normally expect to travel to New York, Paris, or London to experience. Ballet Hispánico’s Carmen.maquia, Italy’s NoGravity, Japanese ensemble Kodo, and acclaimed pianists Isata Kanneh-Mason and Daniil Trifonov are just a few of the remarkable artists coming to Lincoln. It is also an exciting year for the Lied Center building itself. With the steel structure of the Building the Future project complete, we are looking ahead to the completion of this historic transformation in fall 2027. Please also consider joining the Friends of Lied. Your support helps bring extraordinary artists to Nebraska, creates life-changing opportunities for young people, and keeps the Lied Center strong for generations to come. It’s going to be an amazing year. Life is short. Gather your friends. Buy the tickets. Have the time of your life.

HIXSON-LIED

LEGACY Ernst F. Lied and Christina Hixson have transformed the lives of millions of Americans through the Lied Foundation Trust with philanthropic contributions of more than $300 million to over 125 different organizations in seven states.

Born in 1906, Ernst F. Lied was a 1927 graduate of the University of Nebraska. He achieved business success as the owner of a Buick dealership in Omaha and as a real estate magnate in Las Vegas. Having no living relatives, he established a trust in 1972, and upon his death in 1980, his secretary and business partner Christina Hixson was appointed to administer the foundation.

“

The first gift from the Lied Foundation Trust was a $10 million matching grant to build the Lied Center for Performing Arts in the early 1980s at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in memory of Lied’s parents, Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. The Lied Foundation Trust went on to support many projects in Nebraska, including Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo Lied Jungle, the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City, and the Lied Transplant Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

T HE LIED CENTER’S MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IS TO INTRODUCE INDIVIDUALS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS TO ENRICHING AND DIVERSE PERFORMING ARTS EXPERIENCES. - Christina Hixson Christina Hixson first partnered with Lied in 1944 as his secretary at the Omaha Buick dealership, and she followed him to Las Vegas as a business partner in 1960. After Lied’s death, Hixson became the executrix of his estate and continues to serve as the Lied Foundation’s sole trustee. It was Hixson who made the decision to support the construction of the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In 2000, she also announced a gift of $18 million to support UNL’s Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. One of the last major gifts of the Lied Foundation Trust was a $2.5 million grant for the construction of the Lied Center’s new multipurpose space, the Lied Commons, which opened in 2012. Together, Lied and Hixson built a multimillion-dollar empire that has positively impacted the lives of millions of people in Nebraska and across the nation.

All roads lead to Lincoln – and fortunately for us, those roads are traveled by some of the most talented and impressive performers of our time! Congratulations to the Lied Center for creating a spectacular season that is sure to entertain, thrill, and inspire audiences of all ages. LEIRION GAYLOR BAIRD MAYOR OF LINCOLN

“

Here in Lincoln, it can feel easy to take for granted the many popular musicals, intricate ballets, captivating plays, and other incredible performances we are able to witness each year at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. After all, the Lied has been here for 36 years, serving as a hub for high-quality programming and world-class performances since it opened in 1990. But as my family and I return to the Lied year after year, whether it’s for time-honored holiday traditions like Mannheim Steamroller or exciting, family-friendly Broadway hits like Disney’s Frozen, I’m reminded of how important it is to recognize how fortunate we are to have a place like this right here at home. That’s why Union Bank is proud to support the Lied Center’s mission of educating, inspiring, and entertaining the people of Nebraska through the performing arts. If you are so inclined and have the means, I encourage you to join us in supporting the Lied Center to help ensure our community will be able to enjoy moments like these and create lasting memories for years to come. JASON MUHLEISEN, PRESIDENT AND CEO, UNION BANK AND TRUST

“

The Lied Center plays a special role in Lincoln by bringing people together to share experiences that move us, challenge us, and often remind us of what matters most. For the older adults served in Immanuel’s Lincoln communities, access to music, theater, dance, and other performances can spark memories, encourage connection, and nourish the spirit. Those benefits aren't limited by age. The arts enrich the lives of people across our community, and we're proud to support the Lied Center and all it brings to Lincoln. TERI VOSICKY, REGIONAL RETIREMENT LIVING CONSULTANT, IMMANUEL COMMUNITIES

“

It’s my honor and pleasure to serve at the President of the Friends of Lied Board of Directors this year. When the Lied Center for Performing Arts opened back in 1990, thoughtful people decided to form Friends of Lied at the same time as a way of raising funds to sustain the longevity of this impressive hub for culture and the arts. Today, the Friends of Lied has more than 1,200 members from across the state, and this year, there are 59 members of the Board of Directors. The Board promotes membership and hosts fundraising events so we can provide funds to the Lied Center. Last spring, we donated $675,000! This is a particularly exciting year for the Lied. In addition to the wonderful lineup of performances, we’ll get to witness beautiful and important updates to the building, thanks to the Building the Future campaign. Even if you are like me and didn’t get introduced to live theatre until later in life, you know how inspiring it can be. Live theatre brings people together, opens minds, and enhances humanity. Become a Friends of Lied member today to help the Lied Center for Performing Arts continue to bring high-caliber live shows to our community and state-wide. CLOVER FREDERICK, PRESIDENT, FRIENDS OF LIED

The Lied Center for Performing Arts is an important partner to the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, providing our students, faculty and staff opportunities to experience world-class artists on stage and in the classroom. These experiences allow our students to see what it takes to perform and create at the highest level while inspiring new ways of thinking about their own artistic practice. The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts is committed to fostering greater collaboration and interdisciplinarity across the arts. The Lied Center plays an important role in that vision, bringing together artists and audiences from diverse disciplines and creating opportunities for our students to encounter new perspectives, ideas and creative approaches. These connections help prepare our students for a world in which the boundaries between music, theatre, dance, visual art, design and emerging media arts continue to evolve. Our deepest gratitude to Miss Christina Hixson and the Lied Foundation Trust for their vision in creating this remarkable facility and for their enduring support of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Enjoy the performances at the Lied Center this season. We also invite you to visit arts.unl.edu to learn more about our student and faculty performances, exhibitions and other creative work. Longtime Lincoln residents and community volunteers, Mike is the Managing Director of Pacific Asset Management, LLC, and Marvona is a Past National President of the Delta Zeta Sorority, a Past President of the Delta Zeta Foundation and was an early Friends of Lied board member. THE TAVLINS BELIEVE THAT ARTS EDUCATION IS A CRITICAL PART OF STUDENT DEVELOPMENT BECAUSE IT HELPS SHAPE WELL-ROUNDED, ADAPTABLE AND THOUGHTFUL INDIVIDUALS EQUIPPED TO THRIVE BOTH IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE.

MATT & CLOVER FREDERICK

Matt and Clover Frederick are pleased to be Season Lieders supporting the 202627 season of performing arts at the Lied Center! We love Broadway and have been fortunate to take our kids to see shows in Chicago, NYC and London. But we're even more grateful that we can see Broadwaycaliber theatre in our own community. IT IS OUR PLEASURE TO PLAY A ROLE IN BRINGING WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES TO LINCOLN.

BILL BUNTAIN

Returning to Lincoln after leaving in 1985 to launch a career in the music business, Bill is excited to support the Lied Center and its 2026-2027 Season. A graduate of Lincoln High and UNL, he spent the past 36 years on the road managing finance and logistics for live concert tours for a range of rock and pop artists. His first tour was with the B-52s Cosmic Tour in 1990, and over the years he’s worked with Ozzy Osbourne, Janet Jackson, CHER, P!NK, and Tina Turner. Growing up in Lincoln, we didn’t have a dedicated performing arts center, so I saw touring Broadway shows at the Stuart Theater and Pershing Auditorium. We often had to travel to Omaha or Kansas City to see the most current productions. My family also produced the summer musicals at Pinewood Bowl in the late 1970s, and I probably caught the entertainment bug during those summers. Since moving back to Lincoln part-time in 2022, Bill has regularly attended performances at the Lied Center and continues to be amazed by both the quality and quantity of the programming. Whether you’re seeing a play for the first time, or revisiting one of your favorites, seeing a show at the Lied is a reminder of how good it feels to experience something live—and together. I am especially excited to be able to support the Adam Pascal & Anthony Rapp performance this season. I first saw RENT on Broadway in June 1996. Being able to see the original cast in the first few months of RENT’s record-breaking run was like watching fireworks go off. There was so much raw talent on stage. My path crossed with Anthony Rapp in summer 1998 while I was on tour in London when he was one of the four original cast members who were part of the opening RENT cast in the West End. We have stayed in touch over the years and it will be great to have him back in Lincoln.

LARRY & LUCY BUNTAIN COMINE

Larry and Lucy are proud to return as Lied Center Season Lieders for the 2026–2027 season! They have been Lied supporters and leaders for many years, including as Season Lieders for the past several seasons. Lucy serves as the Lied Center’s Senior Development Director Emerita. She has made a major impact in building the Lied Center’s artistic programs, including the Glenn Korff Broadway Series and the Lied’s Command Performance of American Ballet Theatre with Misty Copeland and the St. Louis Symphony. During her time with the University of Nebraska Foundation, Lucy played a lead role in developing the arts at UNL, including the creation of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts and much more. She has a passion for Broadway, dance, and a wide variety of art forms. LARRY AND LUCY ENJOY SUPPORTING AND ADVOCATING FOR NEBRASKA’S PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, AND THEIR POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE LIED WILL LAST LONG INTO THE FUTURE.

RYAN GROSS & BETH BARGER

The Lied Center for Performing Arts has always held a special place in Ryan and Beth's hearts and lives. They are honored to be Season Lieders and support the Lied Center for Performing Arts and all the artists, creators and storytellers who perform there. The arts have always been an important part of their lives and a gateway to expanding their understanding of the world and the amazing artists who create in it each day. As a child Ryan would listen to his grandfather play the dulcimer by ear without any formal music training. He would play for those in his community including those in retirement homes, community and cultural events and for his family. He loved bringing people together through music. Beth has been involved in music and the arts her entire life. She was a member of multiple bands in school, and her children have all followed by learning to play musical instruments and all enjoy visual arts and theater. Her eldest daughter is currently enrolled in the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts. THE LIED CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS BRINGS WORLD-CLASS, CULTURALLY DIVERSE ARTS TO OUR COMMUNITY. THEY ARE PROUD TO SUPPORT IT AND HOPE ALL THAT ATTEND THESE SHOWS ARE INSPIRED BY THESE GREAT ARTISTS AND PERFORMERS.

CHUCK & KAREN HARRIS

We are pleased to participate in the Lied as Season Lieders for the 2026-2027 season. Both lifelong Nebraskans, Karen grew up in Lincoln and graduated from UNL and Chuck grew up in York and is a University of Minnesota graduate. We have been honored to participate in various Lied organizations, including as members of the Lied Center's 25th Anniversary Sterling Society. Karen served on the Friends of Lied board and served as its president in 2008-2009 and is currently on the board of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Chuck served on the Statewide Advisory Board and as its president in 2015-2016. We have enjoyed attending and encouraging friends to enjoy the Lied experience. The Lied's commitment to making the performing arts experiences available to all through programs like Arts Across Nebraska and subsidized ticket prices makes the Lied Center the go-to destination for performing arts in Nebraska. WE WANT ALL NEBRASKANS TO HAVE THE AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY ALL THAT THE LIED CENTER MAKES POSSIBLE.

DOUG & VIKKI KOTIL

The Kotils are longtime friends and supporters of the Lied Center. In 1985, Vikki first became involved as a member of the then, newly formed, Statewide Program Advisory Council for the Lied Center for Performing Arts. She later joined the staff of the Lied Center Project, under the direction of Shelia Griffin, during the facility's construction and initial program development. Vikki recalls this as such a very exciting time to personally witness the brick and mortar being transformed into the world-class performing arts facility that it is today. She adds that from the onset the mission of the Lied Center was to increase opportunities for all Nebraskans to experience the highest quality performances and its events. Doug added that he and Vikki are happy to continue their support as an advocate and Season Lieder because they feel truly fortunate to benefit from the efforts of those visionaries who made the Lied Center a reality. Today, the Lied Center is one of the top 100 theaters in the world. As we attend this season’s performances, IT IS A PRIORITY FOR US TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAMS AND EVENTS AS IT REMAINS EVIDENT THAT THE LIED CENTER CONTINUES TO ENHANCE AND ENRICH THE CULTURAL EXPERIENCES OF GENERATIONS OF NEBRASKANS.

ART & CHRIS ZYGIELBAUM

Taking great honor and pleasure in their involvement with the Lied Center, Art and Chris Zygielbaum support programs, take part in special events, and contribute time and energy to the Lied. Art is the past president of the Lied Center Statewide Advisory Board, and Chris is a former Friends of Lied board member. Art and Chris can be found at the Lied Center for more than 20 performances a year and often choose to support programs that have exceptional artistic merit and social justice impact. These include the play 1984 In the 2019-2020 season, the Mosaic Circle’s Everytime I Talk About and the incredible ABT Across America in the 2020-2021 Season. A number of years ago, they supported a youth play from Australia called Hitler’s Daughter that explored issues of Nazi Germany through a fictional plot. This production, in particular, had a significant impact on local youth who were given the opportunity to experience the show. The Zygielbaums also sponsored My Antonia, Trevor Noah, The Capitol Steps and many other memorable and meaningful programs in past seasons. BECAUSE OF THEIR DEEP BELIEF IN THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LIED CENTER TO OUR COMMUNITY AND STATE, THE ZYGIELBAUMS ARE COMMITTED TO HELPING ASSURE ITS CONTINUED SUCCESS.

In 2023 John founded the Metro Jazz Quintet, an ensemble celebrating the rich tradition of Jazz Music with a sold-out performance series in the Johnny Carson Theater. Through their company, Nebraska Diamond, John and Laurie have sponsored numerous guest artists with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra and the University of Nebraska, as well as supporting Jazz in June. They have also established and funded a Graduate Fellowship in Jazz Trumpet and an Excellence in Jazz Performance Scholarship Fund through the University of Nebraska Foundation, benefiting jazz programs at both UNL and UNO. As members of the Lied Jazz Circle, they are especially committed to the growth and appreciation of jazz music, a uniquely creative and important American art form. THEY TOAST THE LIED ON ANOTHER OUTSTANDING SEASON OF GREAT PERFORMANCES!

LIANA SANDIN – PEARLE FRANCIS FINIGAN FOUNDATION

The Pearle Francis Finigan Foundation, guided by Liana Sandin, has endeavored to make a significant impact on Nebraska's cultural scene. Their unwavering support has not only enriched the arts community in Lincoln but also fostered a broader appreciation for all the arts, especially classical music. By partnering with educational and humanitarian organizations, they have ensured that the arts remain accessible and relevant to diverse audiences. The Lied Center's world-class performances share the foundation's vision of a vibrant cultural milieu, where the arts are celebrated and cherished as a vital part of the community's fabric. THIS COMMITMENT TO THE ARTS IS A POWERFUL REMINDER OF HOW DEDICATED PATRONAGE CAN INSPIRE AND ELEVATE A REGION'S CULTURAL HERITAGE.

GEOFF & KRISTEN CLINE

We are thrilled to support the Lied Center in its mission to "educate, inspire and entertain" as Season Lieders for the 2026–2027 season. We have formed many wonderful memories with our children at Lied Center performances, and we appreciate the Lied's efforts to extend this opportunity to all students in our community and beyond. The Lied provides unique and meaningful outreach and educational experiences — from a 9-year-old's eye-opening first visit to a Lied Center matinee, to the chance for a UNL student to hone their craft in a master class, and so much more. Kristen serves on the Lied Center Statewide Advisory Board and the Lincoln Children’s Zoo Board of Directors and previously served as President of the Friends of Lied Board of Directors. Geoff is the managing partner of Orange Street Group and serves on the boards of the Sheldon Art Association, United Way, and Public Art Lincoln. WE BELIEVE ARTS EDUCATION AND FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCES ARE CRITICAL TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR STUDENTS AND OUR COMMUNITY

RHONDA SEACREST

Few Nebraskans have supported the arts and culture of the state, including the Lied Center for Performing Arts, more than Rhonda Seacrest and her late husband, James C. Seacrest. With their support of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, Sheldon Museum of Art, the Glenn Korff School of Music, Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra, the NET Foundation and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, among others, the Seacrests have gone above and beyond to provide world-class cultural events and education to citizens all across Nebraska. Jointly and individually, the Seacrests have headed fund drives raising millions of dollars and served on the boards of some of Nebraska’s most significant cultural entities. “ATTENDING ANY PERFORMANCE AT THE LIED CENTER ENHANCES THE CULTURAL AWARENESS OF EACH PERSON. I CAN FEEL IT! PATRONS EXIT CULTURALLY ELEVATED IN A MANNER THAT CAN ONLY BE PROVIDED IN AN EXCEPTIONAL VENUE. AND IT IS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE IN LINCOLN.”

THE LIED CENTER IS

NEBRASKA’S PERFORMING ARTS CENTER! In our 36 year history, the Lied Center has hosted more than 1,700 events featuring artists from around the world.

More than 3 million audience members have enjoyed thrilling performances #AtTheLied.

Nearly every artist that appears on the Lied Center stage also works with students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and/ or local K-12 students. Recent masterclasses have taken place in elementary schools, after-school programs, community centers, and beyond—and they’re always FREE to students.

The Lied Center’s Arts Across Nebraska program takes exceptional artists on annual tours to communities throughout the state. Last season, artists and Lied staff traveled over 1,700 miles and provided public performances and arts outreach to more than 4,700 Nebraskans in 8 communities!

Right now, more than 1,300 Nebraskans from all across the state support the Lied Center as members of the Friends of Lied.

As part of our partnership with Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra, every fourth-grade student in Lincoln Public School visits the Lied Center to experience a performance from the symphony.

What do you do with a chance? In the 1980’s Lincoln leaders were discussing the need for a new performance center. An opportunity arose and the leaders moved quickly. Woody Varner, president of the University of Nebraska Foundation and Sheila Griffin, Lied Project Director, led the statewide fundraising campaign. The Lied Foundation Trust provided the generous lead gift. This launched a successful campaign of public and private donations. The groundbreaking was January 6, 1986, where the center was dedicated as the Lied Center for Performing Arts in memory of Ernst and Ida Lied. In 1989 it was my honor to serve as the first director of the Friends of Lied. Amazing volunteers from across Nebraska worked together to promote and fundraise for the new Lied Center for Performing Arts. Everyone was so excited to receive the 1990 program announcement of the first season and to visit the stunning interior. Over 10,000 attended the open house. Think of the thousands entertained, educated, and inspired in this beautiful hall the past 36 seasons. As in the beginning, it takes all of us… ticket holders, individual donors, corporate sponsors, and our public institutions to keep the dream alive for future generations. I remember learning that ticket sales cover only about 50% of a performance center’s budget. Our Friends of Lied and the Lied staff work diligently to promote the fundraising effort for the added 50%. On behalf of the Advisory Board for the Lied Center for Performing Arts, I thank you for your generosity and dedication for so many years. If you have not had the chance to become a Friend of Lied, please review the opportunities in your program and join us. In the early 1980’s Lincoln leaders had a chance to fulfill a community dream. What do you do with a chance? You take it. It just may lead to something incredible. See you at the Lied! BARBARA BARTLE, PRESIDENT OF THE STATEWIDE ADVISORY BOARD

ACTOR BIO

Born in Flint, Michigan, Darius had aspirations from a very young age to be a storyteller. He became a young working actor for Flint youth Theatre, as a pantomime at 14 years old for parties and schools, he went on to do leading roles in his high school at Flint Central and was recruited to finish high school at the prestigious performing art school interlocking arts Academy where he graduated in 1986. He went to study at SUNY Purchase a conservatory the arts for two years. He decided to leave so he purchased to pursue professional career as an actor. Darius Wallace is an award-winning actor, writer, director, and transformative storyteller whose career spans stage, film, television, and education. Trained in classical theater, Wallace began his professional journey with the 1990 Michigan Shakespeare Festival, U of M Flint where he portrayed Caliban in The Tempest—a performance that helped ignite his passion for socially conscious storytelling. Early in his career, in 1992 Wallace created and toured a powerful one-man show based on the lives of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, performing in schools, colleges, and libraries nationwide. He also worked extensively with Flint Youth Theatre as a director, actor, and writer, using theater as a tool for empowerment and education. In 1993 His film debut came in Diary of a Blade, marking the beginning of a parallel career on screen. Wallace went on to perform Macbeth, at U Of M Flint including portraying a younger version of Shakespeare’s tragic hero, and continued touring his one-man show across the country. In 2000, he became a member of Playhouse on the Square’s Black Repertory Theatre, where his artistic voice deepened and matured. During this period, he developed a strong desire to tell the story of Frederick Douglass, creating an early solo work titled The Road to Freedom, which he performed widely in schools, libraries, and nonprofit spaces. In 2013, Wallace premiered a new and expanded solo performance, Self-Made Man: The Frederick Douglass Story, at the Orpheum Theatre and Halloran Centre in Memphis, Tennessee. The production caught the attention of a New York producer and was subsequently brought OffBroadway in 2014 under the same title at the Arclight Theatre in New York City—further cementing Wallace as one of the nation’s leading interpreters of Douglass’s life and legacy. With a growing desire to tell stories behind the camera, in 2007 Wallace wrote, directed, and starred in the feature film 100 Lives, now available on Amazon Prime. He has continued to build a strong television and film career, appearing in projects such as Nothing But the Truth, Brian Banks, and The World We Make. His television credits include Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Reasonable Doubt, and Tyler Perry’s Sistas. In theater, Wallace has performed with numerous companies and ensembles and is a founding company member of Tennessee Shakespeare Company since 2007. He is also a longtime performer with the improvisational ensemble Playback Memphis since 2013 and has appeared with Hattiloo Theatre, among others. Grounded in spiritual discipline, Wallace sustains his creative life through the practice of Tai Chi, meditation, prayer, and lifelong study, bringing presence, truth, and intention to every story he tells.

SHOW DESCRIPTION Frederick Douglass! The Lion of Freedom Written and performed by Darius Wallace In The Lion Of Freedom we journey through Douglass’s life told through more than a dozen characters brought to life by a single actor: the grandmother who raised him and carried him on her back to a farewell he never saw coming; old Barney the horseman, whose whipping opened young Frederick’s eyes to the machinery of slavery; Sophia Auld, the mistress whose forbidden alphabet lessons became “the first anti-slavery lecture” Douglass ever heard; and the slave breaker who tried to beat the light out of him — and failed. It is also the story of Anna Murray Douglass: the free Black woman who funded his escape, ran the Underground Railroad out of her kitchen, raised their five children, held the center while the world pulled her husband toward glory — and whose name history nearly forgot.

Woven throughout is the parable of the eagle raised among chickens, told to a boy who was built to soar. Through spirituals, spoken word, and Douglass’s own thundering words — including his immortal “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” — the performance rises to a final reckoning between Douglass and the man who enslaved him, where the lion of freedom discovers his most radical act: forgiveness. The Lion of Freedom asks the question Douglass spent his life answering — what is freedom? — and leaves every audience with his charge: Freedom Is An Inside Job!!!

SPOTLIGHT

SPONSOR STORY HEATHER & MIKE HILGERS We are grateful to all of those who help make the Lied Center come to life in Lincoln, from supporters to volunteers. It has added so much to our city, and we are thankful to have it here. Frederick Douglass: The Lion of Freedom tells the story of a man who escaped slavery and then spent the rest of his life insisting that this country live up to what it claimed to be. He took that case directly to President Lincoln, and he made it with a moral clarity that still asks something of us. Living in a city named for the President who sat across from him is a daily reminder of that conversation and of what it required from both men. We are honored to support this tribute to a great American.

MOSAIC CIRCLE MITCH BECKER & SUSAN DAVIS-BECKER We love what the Lied Center brings to Lincoln. The ability to have world-class shows in our backyard at this magnitude is quite impressive. Our boys have enjoyed the elementary school days the Lied Center hosts for the youth in our community. Lastly, we appreciate the compassion of the staff to make a very special night for a Make-A-Wish girl. The staff helped us provide snacks and parking to this young lady and her family, creating a night they still talk about. DIANNE & KEITH BYSTROM Drawing from our nearly 40-year careers in higher education, we deeply understand the power of learning and community connection. We support the Lied Center for Performing Arts through the MOSAIC Circle because of its commitment to diverse, culturally rich programming that reflects and brings together the community. MOSAIC performances amplify underrepresented voices, celebrate global traditions, and help break down cultural barriers. Investing in the MOSAIC Circle is more than an act of philanthropy to us; it is a commitment to fostering empathy, encouraging social responsibility, and cultivating a deep appreciation for the arts across Nebraska.

MOSAIC CIRCLE PRISCILLA C. GREW It has been an honor for me to be a member of the Lied Center MOSAIC Circle since 2019. I especially enjoyed supporting MOSAIC together with my friend, the late Dr. Colleen Jones. MOSAIC programming celebrates artistry, self-expression, curiosity and reflection. Lied MOSAIC brings performers to Nebraska who otherwise would remain unknown to us. Beginning with our first childhood visit to a live performance, lifelong learning through the arts helps us empathize with others and learn about life experiences far different from those we will ever have ourselves. The MOSAIC performances and accompanying outreach programming for children, youth, students and the community will help us build future Lied audiences and ensure that our treasured Lied Center is a venue where all people feel welcomed, respected, and valued as they experience the arts. BRUCE JOHNSON & BARB HOPPE This is the first time that Bruce Johnson and Barbara Hoppe will be supporting the Lied Center through the Mosaic Circle. Celebrating diversity is important to us as we look around our city and country and see the number of underrepresented voices, celebrate the many cultures, and learn new traditions. As educators, we believe change comes as we open our minds and hearts to new people. We are excited about the 3 program focuses with Frederick Douglass and his determination to learn to read even in the face of extreme cruelty; the creativity we all can experience with Olivia Komahcheet whose performance compliments the Otoe-Missouria weekend at the Lied Center and at Mahoney State Park; and the Strings of Many Colors that will celebrate the diversity of global music. ART & CHRIS ZYGIELBAUM Art and Chris Zygielbaum enjoy and take pride in supporting the arts in Lincoln. They both grew up in families where music and the arts enriched their lives. The Zygielbaums recognize that in a world that seems so divided by culture, politics, and religion, we must not forget those things we all hold precious in common. The arts, whether a music performance, a play, or a comedian, reminds us that we are all touched by a good story, stirred by a well-performed score or song, and made to laugh by a clever twist of words. Those are things shared no matter our background. That is the substance of the MOSAIC Circle. We bask in the richness of cultures other than our own. Art’s parents were holocaust survivors. Because their culture was misunderstood, denigrated, and painted inferior, their lives were indelibly damaged. It is Art and Chris’ fervent hope that programs created through the MOSAIC Circle will help people understand and appreciate other people. They believe the arts can help us avoid the distrust and misunderstanding that underpins tragedies like the holocaust. And both of them are very proud of the Lied Center for Performing Arts, the joy and insight it brings to them, and the incredible value it provides to our community.

MORE THAN A PERFORMANCE:

YO-YO MA RETURNS

TO THE LIED When University of Nebraska–Lincoln freshman cello performance major Cordelia Grey learned she might have an opportunity to meet Yo-Yo Ma during his visit to the Lied Center, she kept her expectations modest. “I was so excited just to get to hear him play,” Grey recalled. What happened instead became an experience she will carry for the rest of her life. Grey and fellow students spent nearly 45 minutes with Ma before his Lied Center performance. Then came a surprise none of them expected: each student was invited to play Ma’s 1733 Montagnana cello, an instrument valued in the millions. “It was absolutely incredible,” Grey said. “We had no idea we were going to get to play it.”

Grey admitted she was nervous about meeting one of her musical heroes. Those nerves disappeared quickly when Ma expressed being just as excited to meet the students as they were to see him. Ma also offered advice Grey put to use almost immediately, notating suggestions and tips on the sheet music she was using in an upcoming recital while encouraging her to focus on enjoying the music and expressing what she was feeling. Grey applied his advice at her solo recital and later told audience members who complimented her performance, “Yeah, I got that advice from Yo-Yo Ma.” That spirit of connection continued during intermission. When Ma learned that a group of high school orchestra students were in the audience, he invited them backstage to learn about their musical experiences and connect with them about the program he was performing. For Lied Center audiences and supporters, these moments demonstrate the reach of artist outreach. Bringing the world’s greatest performers to Nebraska creates extraordinary nights in the concert hall, but the impact can extend far beyond the performance itself. Students gain access to artists they have studied and admired, receiving encouragement and inspiration at pivotal moments in their development. Cordelia Grey arrived hoping simply to see Yo-Yo Ma up close. She left with his advice, an unforgettable experience playing his cello and a new perspective on finding joy in making music.

BEYOND THE STAGE: SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR BUILDS CONNECTIONS ACROSS LINCOLN A full week with the Soweto Gospel Choir brought music, movement and connection to spaces across Lincoln. The internationally celebrated ensemble’s return to the Lied Center included far more than a performance, with residency activities reaching young people, musicians and community members throughout the city. At the Malone Center, choir members introduced children to South African games, movement and dance, filling the room with jumping, clapping and laughter. At First-Plymouth Church, members of the ensemble worked with Abendmusik singers to learn a song together, bringing musicians from different backgrounds into the same space through a shared love of singing. One of the week’s most meaningful encounters took place at the Lancaster County Youth Services Center. The visit created a powerful connection between the young people and choir members. Youth Services Center staff shared the effects of these residencies can continue for days with participants becoming more positive and hopeful after the artists leave. The residency also reached the next generation of Nebraska musicians. Approximately 250 University of Nebraska–Lincoln music students gathered for a special convocation with the choir. Some learned a song directly from the artists and, that evening, joined Soweto Gospel Choir on the Lied Center stage to perform the finale together. Sharing South African heritage was central to the artists’ approach. Soweto Gospel Choir singer and choir administrator Bongani Ncube explained, “Singing is the same all over, but other people do it differently and they use their heritage.” He also hoped the experience would inspire young musicians to see where their own love of singing might take them. For Lied Center audiences and supporters, this is the impact artist outreach can create. A world-class performance may fill the Lied Center for one evening, but a residency carries that experience into community organizations, classrooms and the lives of young people who may never otherwise have this kind of access. Through these encounters, visiting artists become more than performers. They become teachers, collaborators and sources of inspiration, and the impact of their time in Nebraska can continue long after the final applause.
