Dots are the most common spread pattern worldwide. In different variations they could be found in the traditional arts and rituals of almost every nation in all continents. Australia, India, Japan, Mongolia, Ethiopia, Brazil are only a few of many countries where dots are a very important symbol. In some cultures dots are signs for human beings or the spirits of the ancestors. In the Aboriginal art of Australia they are often used for marking sources of water or depicting the gods of rain. Dots are also genuine as decorative elements. To make a dot with a fingerprint is probably not only the easyest way for the people to decorate their bodies, but also the first in the human history. Therefore dots have a deep emotional and cultural meaning for all the people. This makes dots the ideal pattern for a wide range of clients all around the world. In this textile collection dots are not just a pattern, but also ingredients of the texture for the majority of the woven fabrics. This is the reason why most of the woven samples are in plain weave. Green and blue shades are avoided intentionally, because they would violate the sense of warmth, which is vital for the spirit of the collection. A range of techniques was explored during the developmental process: different types of weaving and their combinations, tie and dye, embroidery and digital printing. The collection is devided in two groups (parts). Part 1 is characterised by graphic lines and bright vivid colours (yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, black and white). A key element is the rounded symbol, which Aboriginal artists depict as a sign of springs. Part 2 is distinguished by its rougher textures and natural earth shades, diversified by orange nuances.

RICE FIELDS A KNITWEAR PROJECT
Layers a fashion and textile project, inspired by cave paintings
‘Layers’ is a fashion and textile project inspired by the cave paintings. It consists of two parts. The first part is a collection of digital textile prints divided in two groups: womenswear patterns and menswear patterns. The womenswear patterns are large scaled and colourful. They are made of many different layers. The motifs are taken mainly from the Australian cave art. On the other hand the menswear patterns are very small and graphic (mostly in black and white). Their elements are mainly animalistic. The second part of the project is a fashion collection of 20 outfits. The materials for the collection are not only the fabrics printed with the above described patterns and the hand dyed silk, but also very fine mohair yarns used for the machine knitting of some garments which play the role of semi-transparent layers on top of the prints. The silhouettes of the outfits correspond to the unusual shapes of the humane figures depicted in the Australian caves. Extra long sleeves, belts, ribbons and difference in the lenght of fronts and bags make the garments remind of these mysterious creatures. The title is ‘Layers’, because in cave paintings there is often layering. Sometimes (especialy in Europe) new paintings are painted on top of the old ones. In other cases (like in Australia) the paintings are refreshed every time when they fade, because the people believe that in this way the spiritual power of the images is preserved. Playing with the name of the project the outfits are also constructed of different layers.
