celebrating the 60th Lidingöloppet!

Lidingöloppet is extra happy to celebrate our 60th race anniversary. Pretty amazing that a simple idea with a few hundred participants in 1965 has grown into the world’s largest cross-country race.

Our anniversary is celebrated in many ways - pay attention along the track as we offer the highlights from the start in 1965 to 2024. Runners and the public will be able to read more about Grete Waitz wins (12 times!), the initiator Sven Gärderud together with Karl-Axel ”Kacke” Karlberg, the veteran Kristina Stannow, the hill with a big A (Abborrbacken) and many more stories.

We also organize the Lidingöloppets biggest challenge to date – 60 km. The runners participate in four races during the weekend: TCS Lidingöfemman on Friday, followed by TCS Lidingöloppet 15 km and 30 km on Saturday, to finish with the Pink Ribbon 10 km race on Sunday. A real test of strength during one and the same weekend. A warm welcome to the world’s largest cross-country race!

The start is at Grönsta Gärde. Your starting group and exact starting time are listed on the number bib, among other things. Timing chip is on the back of the number bib. See more about timing under A-Z. Admission takes place 20 minutes before the start and closes 10 minutes before. Information signs clearly direct when admission is. Starting in an earlier starting group means automatic disqualification. Starting in a later group automatically results in additional time added. The times are not corrected afterwards.

DURING THE RACE

COURSE

The 10 km course follows the same route as the TCS Lidingöloppet 30 km’s last 10 km, in the hilly terrain. The track is marked with pink flags. The kilometer markings show how far there is to the finish line.

LIQUID STATIONS

• 6.3 km from the finish, Uddvägen: sports drink, water, cinnamon bun and bananas (10 km race)

• 3 km from the finish, Tyktorp: sports drink, water, bananas (10 km race)

• At the finish line: sports drink, water, cinnamon bun bananas (4 km and 10 km races).

AFTER THE RACE

MEDAL

Everyone who completes the race receives a bronze medal at the finish line. If you run under 50 minutes for women and under 45 minutes for men, you get a silver medal. Go to the results tent after the finish to check your race time and to exchange your bronze medal for silver medal.

PRIZES

The top 15 get a prize. The top six get a prize on the stage directly adjacent to the finish tent after the finish line. Other prize winners in places 7–15 will receive a prize in the prize-giving tent at Grönsta.

A pink race for cancer research

On sunday you can support the fight as well!

Someone who knows how important it is for many of us to run the Rosa Bandet race is Victor Norén. The Cancer Society’s new ambassador, Victor, has experienced the cruel and harsh reality of the disease up close and wants to spread the message so that cancer research can save more lives. Listen to his story and motivations.

When you were asked to become an ambassador for the Pink Ribbon Race, was it an obvious decision to say yes?

- One of the most obvious yeses of my life. For the past ten years, I have talked about the disease during my concerts and have been very committed to ensuring that there is awareness around it. That it should not be locked away behind closed doors in hospitals or around the dinner table with those affected. It affects us all sooner or later, and I am convinced that demystifying it and having the courage to talk about it is a significant part of the fight against it.

Why did you choose to take on the role of ambassador?

- I want to be an inspirer. Because what you do when you stand up to cancer is that you also celebrate life. I want to help inspire people to fight. You never know when the most beautiful moments will come. And if those moments lie ahead, I want to be able to contribute with what I can to help create that future for everyone. Especially for young people who are affected. The Cancer Foundation works every day to give people a longer life, a second chance, and more time to actually experience all the wonderful things that come with living and being healthy.

How do you view your mission as an ambassador?

- I take it very seriously. And I want to contribute with what I can. To reach people through music. Perhaps the greatest gift of being a musician and singer is that people often listen. In a different way than when you just talk, because music helps to amplify the words and reach deeper within. If I can get people to contribute money to research through my music, I know I have succeeded as an ambassador. So that is my ultimate goal.

Please share your own experiences with the disease.

- The disease has shaped me immensely as I lost my best friend Kristian Gidlund to cancer in 2013. He was a strong voice in the fight against the disease that eventually took him. Only 29 years old. I watched up close how merciless it can be. I saw his sorrow over having to leave so young. He was a person who loved life. He had so many dreams that he never got to experience. That research could one day prevent such a brutal fate is a huge deal and something I take very seriously.

What message do you want to convey to others who have not come into contact with the disease?

-In many ways, I want to keep Kristian’s legacy alive. That conversation is important. That one should not feel fear of death and cancer. To accept the enemy, live with it, and constantly remind oneself that it exists. But that it can be defeated. As long as we do not forget it. I want to convey that it affects everyone in the end. But that hope is stronger and that research is making great strides. And if we are to reach the ultimate goal together, we must keep the conversation alive and thus increase awareness so that funding for research will never be what puts obstacles in the way of eventually winning the fight.

This year’s wreath

bearer and wreath maiden 2024

Simon Sundström och Isabella Tapper

Even though the TCS Lidingöloppet weekend is marked annually by tens of thousands of personal victories, it is a special honor to obtain first place in the world’s largest XC race. TCS Lidingöloppet is therefore proud to present this year’s laurel wreath carriers (kranskulla and kransmas), who will hand out this year’s victory wreaths. Their names is Simon Sunström and Isabella Tapper.

It is a long-standing tradition to present victory wreaths to the class winners at the TCS Lidingöloppet. As in previous years, this is done by representatives from the two organizing clubs of the race. For the anniversary year 2024, the wreath bearers are Isabella Tapper, an orienteer from IFK Lidingö Ski and Orienteering, and Simon Sundström, a runner from IFK Lidingö Athletics.

It is an honorable task to hang the wreaths on the winners of the TCS Lidingöloppet, and this year’s chosen wreath bearers are well prepared. Isabella, known as ”Bella,” was born and raised just a stone’s throw from Grönsta gärde, where all the joyful finishes of the Lidingöloppet take place. ”Bella” trains diligently and has a wonderful spirit that brings joy to everyone around her. She has achieved her best results in orienteering’s middle distance but also enjoys running road races.

Simon is already one of Lidingö’s absolute best runners of all time and has represented Sweden in the European Championships, World Championships, and the Olympics. He has also won four Swedish Championship golds in the 3000m steeplechase and one in the 10,000m. Additionally, Simon has performed well at the Lidingöloppet, with two victories in the M22 class and

This year’s medal motif

The motif on this year’s TCS Lidingöloppet medal, which by tradition bears motifs by the Lidingö artist Carl Milles, is a Young Moose.

Throughout his life, Carl Milles (1875-1955) has returned to animals as motifs. He observed in detail their expressions and movement patterns and placed great importance on their symbolic meaning. For Milles, horses represented an energetic power animal that takes on all challenges in its path with pride and courage.

”Young Moose” is an example of a late sculpture where Milles moved towards a more modern and geometric

strong placements in the Lilla Lidingöloppet.

It will be exciting to see what Simon can achieve in the future on the 30km course of the Lidingöloppet!

How does it feel to have the honor of being crowned this year’s winner in the Lidingö race?

Isabella: Wonderful! But also a little nerve-wracking. I need to practice running and putting the wreath on smoothly, haha...

Simon: It’s incredibly honorable! The Lidingöloppet is the race that made me want to start running when I was a kid. What are your favorite memories of the Lidingö race?

Isabella: My best memory from the Lidingöloppet is when I, together with Ebba Ganslandt and Emma Bjessmo, won the best club in the Pink Ribbon race in 2019. Finally, the orienteers beat the track and field athletes!

Simon: I remember how, as a kid, I loved just standing out on the course on Lidingö, watching the thirty-kilometer race live. The whole Lidingöloppet weekend was also a major highlight of the year with the school relay on Friday, watching the thirty-kilometer race and being a volunteer on Saturday, and running the Lilla Lidingöloppet on Sunday. It created many wonderful memories.

design language than before, which can be seen in the simplified mane, ponytail and angular plant stems. All of Carl Milles’ statues, which, for 30 years have been featured on the TCS Lidingöloppet medals, can be seen at Millesgården on Lidingö.

Lidingöloppet receives the Sustainable Event certification 2024

The TCS Lidingöloppet has always been an event with a strong focus on sustainability, both socially and environmentally. Nature is our arena, and improved public health is our goal. In addition to encouraging as many people as possible to run our races for better well-being, all of our profits go to supporting local clubs and youth sports. We take care of the environment by always striving to leave the smallest possible footprint.

Our partners are deeply involved in this mission. Naturskyddsföreningen (the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation) and Friends are two examples of collaborations we are very proud of. Our title sponsor, TCS, also works hard to promote health and well-being worldwide, including by being the title sponsor of marathons in London, Amsterdam, Mumbai, and New York.

We are very pleased to announce that the Lidingöloppet 2024 has received the Sustainable Event certification from Greentime – a prestigious quality mark that encompasses all aspects of sustainability: social, environmental, and economic.
