Cecilia Gyldén LidingöloppetSecretary-General
Welcome back to the TCS Lidingöloppet weekend!
Many of us have waited for a full-scale race during the previous two years. At the Lidingöloppet office, we are proud that we managed to arrange TCS Lidingöloppet and Rosa Bandet-loppet (the Pink Ribbon-race) in 2020 and 2021, albeit in a different forms than normally. In the meantime, many kept training through the pandemic, and maybe even felt a particular joy doing so while so many other activities were impossible. It is thus wonderful to welcome runners and supporters to a traditional running cele bration, and to cherish the experience all together. And if you wish to keep on running in virtual races, you are of course able to do so through our @Hemma-races, which are available until the 9th of October!
We are also happy to announce that TCS Lidingöloppet 30K will be broadcasted live via Sportkanalen and C More’s platforms on Saturday the 24th of September between 12:00 and 14:45. All other race events during the race weekend will be broadcasted on Togetherwww.tcslidingoloppet.sewehavemade it through a challenging journey during the last two years. Thank you for joining us now – and best of luck on the trails! And also… … the registration for TCS Lidingöloppet and Rosa Bandet-loppet 2023 will be launched already on the 26th of September at 10:00, so make sure to secure your start!
The smell of fresh cut grass and starter pistol-smoke are for many associated with both excitement and nervosity. It means that the great running party is here. After two years with restrictions, we can finally offer all runners and supporters the traditional TCS Lidingöloppet experience!
If you have longed for the traditional events during the race weekend, this year’s event will not disappoint. The popular accommo dation on hard floor is for example back –as are the showers and dressing rooms on Grönsta, the breakfast, food and refresh ments on all arenas and the Lidingöloppet fair, as well as a range of new activities which you will discover during the event!
3 A message from TCS Lidingöloppet’s Secretary-General Cecilia Gyldén

4 This year’s medal motif ”Forest God with Three Ravens” The motif on this year’s TCS Lidingöloppet medal is Carl Milles’ statue ”Forest God with three ravens” (1875–1955) – a piece which depicts the natural mysticism which was recurring for the sculptor. In Carl Milles’ art, magical beings such as centaurs, naiads, nymphs, and forest gods inhabit the lakes and roam in the forests. TCS Lidingöloppet hopes that the forces of nature will give this year’s partici pants a magical experience along meadows and forest trails! EFTER LOPPET DURING THE RACEBEFORE THE RACE
All registered participants will receive their Start Informa tion via e-mail only. The Start Info contains the partici pant’s personal QR code.
– My inspiration is the joy I share with others during the races! If I’m having fun in my costume, the crowd is having fun, and the more fun the running party is, the easier it is to run!
On the topic of colour, how do you ensure that the colour in, for example, face painting does not come off and change places during the race?
– Apply water-resistant paint, the kind that they use at the theatre. Can one combine running comfort with a festive costume? – You must know beforehand that it can be a little uncomfortable when you run in a creative running outfit. At the same time, you have so much fun with the spectators and with the other participants when you are running in a costume that you run faster. I once tried to quit a marathon half way through the race, but was pushed back by the spectators! They thought it was so much fun to see me run that I was not allowed to leave!
Another advice would be to put a lot of detail into the costume. Don’t just wear a wig – that is not enough. Instead, coordinate the wig with shoes, socks, clothes, face paint and other props – such as a ladder or a comb – to give a complete impression!
Sometimes the inspiration also comes from popculture. On one occasion, I designed Madonna”cones” for me and a female friend in preparation for a race. During the event, she looked so amazing that a group of men refused to run past her!
What should one bear in mind when designing an attention-grabbing costume? – Dare to be hysterical! Relax and laugh at your own expense, you will notice the joy you bring with you! I have notices that this is easier for small children and for older women – they really have a great time dressing up! Grown-up men are less confident.
Lennart ”the Pink Panther” Hansson on How to design the winning costume for TCS teamLidingöfemman’scompetition!
INTERVIEW | ”the Pink
on what to wear
If you dare to dress up, you will run faster! That according to Lennart Hansson, who has not only run fast in Sweden’s largest races, but who has also become famous nationwide for his creative running outfits. Here, he describes how to design a costume for the team competition in TCS Lidingöfemman, to both catch the judges’ attention and make the race experience more enjoyable! Panther”
Over 40 years, you have run in bold, colourful, and creative costumes during great running events. Where does the inspiration for the outfits come from?

What should one avoid in a running outfit? Do you have any cautionary tales? – I haven’t made any real mistakes since I think care fully about my outfits beforehand. Yet, something that I have tried, and which did not work as expected was body paint. The paint blocked the sweat glands – it got too warm, I was dying of heat! If you want to paint your body before the race, only apply paint in small areas!

INTERVIEW | Färga löpspåret rosa året om

To make new habits last in the long run, it is important to make them routines in everyday life. Be kind to yourself, and set attainable goals! Cancerfonden and Lidingö loppet welcome you to this year’s Rosa Bandetloppet, and wish you the best of luck in your training, before and after, the challenge! Remember that every step is important and that every form of move ment counts!
It is a common idea that Valentine’s Day should be celebrated all year round – that loved ones should be given love and care all days of the year. In the same way, Rosa Bandet-loppet’s message about caring about one’s own health should be heeded every day, all year round. Indeed, research shows that daily physical activity – of just 20 minutes per day – gives the body what it needs to reduce the risk of several cancer forms.
You ran TCS Lidingöloppet for the first time at age 86, what made you sign up?

– I had been part of TCS Lidingöloppet as a race official since the first races were arranged. The event has always been close to my heart since I live close to the running trails and because I know the race’s founders Sven Gärerud, Lars-Eric Dahlstedt, and Assar BeforeBlomquist.theracein
– No, the position in the race is still important!
20 INTERVIEW | Run throughout the course of
2016, Sven Gärderud and Lars-Eric Dahlstedt described that TCS Lidingöloppet had a new race event for women in the age group 80. They finished by stating that ”you can do it!”. It was the en couragement I needed to dare to toe the starting line for the first time and to finish the race. I learnt along the way that four kilometers was not that difficult!
Many think that running is only for a short part of the life cycle. Ann-Louise ”Lissen” Lindman, 92, proves the opposite. At the age of 86, she finished her first TCS Lidingöloppet, and today she is both a record-holder in age, a frequent medalist, and an inspiration into the world of running for her 5-year-old great-great-grandson Albin!
RUNNING THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF LIFE
– I have been exercising my entire life and have par ticipated in a number of regular recreational races, and also hiked in the mountains. My inspiration for a healthy lifestyle has, over the last 15 years, been GIH (the Swedish School of Sport and Health Science) and I have for long trained in their gymnastics- and health projects for seniors.
What advice could you share to participants who are taking part in TCS Lidingöloppet for the first time this year?
You have the record as the TCS Lidingöloppet’s age senior - does this record take focus from time and position when you run the race?
– My tip would be to visit the TCS Lidingöloppet trails before the race in order to learn the course. You do not have to run – walking is sufficient. The main point is to get to know the hills and to know where the reco vering sections are located. This is important to know beforehand in order to know how to use your forces on race day. What do you say to inspire children and grandchild ren to an active lifestyle?
– The family, with many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, usually stand and cheer for me at the final stretch at Grönsta! My 5-year-old great-greatgrandson Albin is probably cheering the most enthusiastically. This autumn, I hope to inspire his own path into the world of sports, as we plan to run 1.7K together during the TCS Lidingö Knattelopp!

Anna: When the whole club gathers up before the event and helps out to build the arena. These gettogethers are always framed by a really nice atmo sphere!
Anna: I was very happy and surprised!

Fredrick: I felt happy and honored when I received the request and I did not hesitate for a second to say yes. Being the wreath carrier is one of the finest roles you can have. What is your favorite tradition during the TCS Lidingöloppet weekend?

INTERVIEW | The wreath carries of 2022
The 2022 wreath carriers: Anna Bachman and Fredrick Ekholm
Even though TCS Lidingöloppet 2022 will be framed by tens of thousands of personal victories, it is a special honor to win the first place in the world’s largest cross-country race. TCS Lidingöloppet is therefore proud to present this year’s laurel wreath carriers, who will celebrate this year’s winners at the finish line at Grönsta. It is with great pride that TCS Lidingöloppet presents this year’s laurel wreath carriers (kranskulla and kransmas) Anna Bachman from IFK Lidingö Skid & Orienteringsklubb and Fredrick Ekholm from IFK Lidingö Friidrott. Both will be TCS Lidingöloppet’s ambassadors during this autumn’s running party and will hand over the victory wreaths to the winners in the races. In an interview, Anna and Fredrick describe the excitement of being next in line in a tradition that has characterized TCS Lidingöloppet since 1968: How did you react when you found out that you had been named the wreath carrier?

Fredrick: I did not think of this until I was asked. I have just called my friend and convinced him to become my training person when it comes to handing over the wreath. My spontaneous strategy and hope is that there will be lone runners in the lead in most race events, that they will be tired enough for me to keep up, that I do not stumble, that I do not make the leader stumble, that it does not rain and that the wreath is on before the race is over. If it does not turn out as I intended, I will be nervous that I will make a mistake.
Fredrick: One of my personal favorites during the TCS Lidingöloppet weekend is Kidszone, for which I have been been the race official for several years. It has always been a lot of fun to see children come by and have fun while their parents participate in the race events. Another tradition that I appreciate is the Rosa Bandet-loppet (the Pink Ribbon Race), as I have rela tives who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I thus think that race has a very meaningful cause! What is your strategy when it comes to handing over the wreaths to the tired runners at the final stretch of the Anna:race?Oh, I have not thought about that yet, but I think I will try to study the runner, so that I do not surprise him or her, and so that everything proceeds smoothly.
THE BLUE COLOR ON THE DRESS

The color is a celebration of the composer Carl-Michael Bellman (1740-1795), who, during his visit to Lidingö, composed “the Lidingö Song” (“Lidingösången”). The song describes how Lidingö is surrounded by light blue water (“ljusblå bölja”).
The costumes worn by the TCS Lidingöloppet wreath carriers (the kransmas and kranskulla) are filled with beautiful, yet discrete, symbols! Below, Lidingö’s Local History Society (Hembygdsföreningen), which designed the costume in 1997, helps to interpret what the symbols mean:

THE RYE ON THE FEMALE WREATH CARRIER’S BELT

Since 1968, laurel wreaths are awarded to the victors in all race events during TCS Lidingöloppet. The male and female wreath carriers, which greet the winners at the final stretch and hand over the laurel wreaths, are always selected among the members in Lidingöloppet’s owner clubs IFK Lidingö Skid- och Orientering and IFK Lidingö Friidrott. The criteria to become a wreath carrier is athletic performance. symbols in the costumes of the wreath
THE RYE ON THE BACK ON THE MALE WREATH CARRIER’S VEST Represents that the carries has moral courage and physical strength (from the Swedish idiom “råg i ryggen”, ie. “rye in the backbone”).

INTERVIEW | The
THE VIKING SHIP ON THE FEMALE WREATH CARRIER’S SILVER BROOCH
THE WILD STRAWBERRIES ON THE FEMALE WREATH CARRIER’S COLLAR AND BELT: Another reference to ”Lidingösången”, in which Bellman describes how Lidingö’s nature is filled with wild strawberries (”överallt i dälden nära man de röda smultron ser”.
The broosh was designed by the Lidingö artist Einar Nerman in 1931 as a logotype for Lidingö’s Local History Society. Runic inscriptions from the viking age, found around the island, indicate that Lidingö has been populated since around 600 A.D.
A third attribution to ”Lidingösången”, in which Bellman describes how Lidingö’s fields frame the roads with its rye (”dina åkrar pryda vägen med en hög och gulnad råg”).
