It seems like just last week that I was wearing my snow boots (I was),…. but actually it really is Spring, and here we are again about to host the 8th Annual LIC Arts Open! I am proud of what we have achieved in 8 years, and the various exhibitions and events around this year’s festival make me feel that we continue to punch above our weight with a dynamic artist community that is fully engaged and ready to tell their story. This excitement, commitment and energy is a fantastic counterweight to the rise of the vulgarian class in Washington, where genuine threats to funding and lack of support for one of America’s greatest exports, culture, is confusing and disappointing to say the least. To say it’s been a confusing year in terms of political support would be an understatement, but against this worrying backdrop we see industrious, dedicated artists and makers who continue to thrive, evolve and take risks. This year’s festival, similar to last year, will host several really large spaces, in addition to The LIC Arts Open and Plaxall Galleries, to showcase exhibitions where hundreds of artists are on display. All the events are free including Music, Dance and Performance. We highly recommend the Open Studios as a great way to meet many artists in their creative dens, and hope that you will also support the local businesses who support us. In particular, the Court Square Diner has been one of the biggest contributors to the festival every year since the Festival’s inception. Their generosity is indicative of the wonderful support we receive from local businesses and the community. Likewise, most of our current sponsors have been with us from the beginning, for which we are very grateful. I want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all the participating artists and my team, especially Tessa Kennedy and Seymour Klausner. Thanks also to Official Photographer, Steven Speliotis, Production Manager Justin Hsu and our production assistants Tatiana Goriunova, Aureole Ribes, Emma Trodella, Alyssa Stearns and Caroline Snape. I would also like to offer thanks to our sponsors, who are fully credited at the back of the booklet, and in particular, we would like to thank Reis, Rockrose, Olmstead, The Factory & Atlas Capital Group, and The Plaxall companies for the generous provision of spaces. We hope you will enjoy the festival, tell your friends, and don’t forget to let the artists that you visit know if you enjoyed seeing their work. Thank you for your support!

G(L)AZE Reception: 5-10pm Gallery hours: 24/7

An expansive group show of ceramic artists who manipulate form and finish to capture the viewer's gaze. Mute obelisks accept our attention, but remain obstinately unmoved. We lose ourselves staring intently at a miniature tableau trying to piece together a story. Selfpossessed, flower bedecked faces return our gaze impassively or remain lost in their own thoughts, disinterested in our presence. A cluster of vessels hover in an unstable fracture between function and abstraction. We, our gazes, are trapped in the puzzles. Perhaps, if we gaze harder, longer, we can break through the stony surfaces. Curated by Peter Goldwater and Eric Lawrence. Exhibition on view until June 22nd. licartsopen.org

The LIC Arts Open Gallery at The Factory - Gallery II 30-30 47th Ave (main floor to the left of Security) Latinx Reception: 5-9pm Gallery hours: 24/7

We often put ourselves in boxes with neat labels, but how do we define Latinx? Is it by the Spanish language or is it by a geographic region of birth? Does it have to do with a family’s customs or the culture in which one is raised? Latinx is all and none of these descriptors. This exhibition seeks to deconstruct the Latin American identity and explore different facets of it. There is beauty and complexity in our stories of migration. Artists include: Orestes Gonzalez, Maria Liebana, Janice Quiles-Reyes, Benjamin Lundberg Torres Sánchez.

Curated by Cristina Ferrigno. Exhibition on view until June 22nd. licartsopen.org

FRIDAY 18th Communitea 11-18 46th Rd Figurations

Combining his love of non-objective painting with linear figurative forms, Queens native Domingo Carrasco has partnered with Communitea to present his series of recent works. Figurations celebrates color and form from a modernist standpoint. This body of work attempts to idealize the human spirit whilst emphasizing Domingo’s fascination with color. Figurations captures the artist's struggles as he seeks to tame the physical properties of the paint without compromising the narrative element of the work. Upon closer inspection, one can sense that Domingo is simplifying, exaggerating and, at times, abstracting his pictures to evoke alternative perspectives from his audience. facebook.com/communitealic

LIC Mural at the Lion Match Building: Solo Exhibition by Michael White Reception: 6-10pm Gallery hours: 9-5pm Mon-Fri

The owners of the Lion Match Building in LIC commissioned a mural for the lobby of this commercial building (a former match factory). Upon seeing the dramatic view of the Queensboro Bridge from the roof, I decided to make this the theme of the mural. Working from a photograph, I proceeded to spend more than 2000 hours creating a mural of the Queensboro Bridge in pencil and acrylic, completing the wall in 2015. Again this year, I expanded the mural onto other walls of the lobby, and I'm currently on schedule to complete the final work by May. michaelwhitestudio.com

My Inner World / Sakhai’s Sekai

Traveling from a young age and experiencing many cultures have been sources of inspiration in my work. My paintings are influenced by places I have lived and traveled. Additionally, having a mother from Japan and father from Iran,

I find myself carrying both Eastern and Middle Eastern traditions. I have a strong sense of both cultures, with the added influence of being American. These many worlds intersect within me to create my own unique inner world. My paintings reflect the vast multitude of my personal "seka" and the complex landscapes of my past and present. resobox.com
