Hello from Lynne Libraries and Cultural Services Manager Welcome to the 5th edition of More Than Books. South Taranaki Libraries have been rocking over the summer holidays and not just because the earth has been moving! Children all over the district have been taking part in the Great Book Mystery Summer Reading Programme. To have so many children reading their way through the summer has great benefits, they go back to school with reading levels as high as or higher than they left with. They are energized and enjoy reading. These skills will enable them to accomplish so much more as they make their way through life.

What are your first library memories?

Mine are of the old Hawera Library when everyone had to be very quiet, there was a very big long reading table with newspapers spread out on it and adults reading them. Children had a little room at the back of the library; there were lots of books in there and although their covers were not as bright and colourful as today, they still drew me away into magical worlds and daring feats.

Reading has remained my main interest – from murder mysteries to romance and from travel to biographies. They have entranced me, educated me, been a comfort in bad times and a happy place in good times. My passion for books resolved itself into a career which has taken me around the world and back again. It is a privilege to have a job I enjoy and that I can share with all of you.

ebooks & eReaders The selection of eBooks available is continuously growing. South Taranaki Libraries are subscribed to two eBook services - Wheelers ePlatform, which has been live since November 2011, and ePukapuka, which is the lower North Island eBook consortium.

Both eBooks and audio downloads are available from the ePukapuka service that is provided and over 1,500 titles are available for borrowers to use through ePukapuka.

Download anytime of the day or night to your computer, eReader or compatible device. All you need is a library card number and access to the internet.

If you don’t have a compatible device to read eBooks on you can borrow one from South Taranaki Libraries. South Taranaki Libraries now have three Sony eReaders that anyone with a library card can borrow for a small rental fee of $5.00 for three weeks.

A Closer Look: Waverley LibraryPlus

Waverley LibraryPlus is set back from the road on the main street of Waverley, with ample car parking out back and a bike rack at the front. The current building is just one of many that have housed the library on the same site; over the years the library has made use of the old Plunket rooms and police station, and was temporarily housed in the old Lorien Saddlery while major renovations were undertaken.

In the mid 2000’s community funds were used to remove the back half of the building, actually two old buildings joined together, and add on a large new purpose built brick building. This increased the size of the library considerably and gave it a fresh new look. At the same time, an art wall was installed and this is looked after by Mrs Jo Byam. The wall is well utilised by artists who display paintings, drawings, photography, quilting and more. Library users enjoy the opportunity to see, and purchase, work by locals.

For many years Waverley Library had provided additional services to users, so when Library and Council services amalgamated to create the LibraryPlus in 2003, the change was less dramatic than in other libraries throughout the district. Over the years Waverley LibraryPlus has seen real growth in opening hours, and currently opens five and a half days a week. The Saturday morning hours have proved popular with locals, especially those wanting access to the free APNK computers and wifi.

As well as the usual Library and Council services, such as handling rates, dog registrations and greenwaste, Waverley LibraryPlus offers a range of activities and events including a book club for the adults, a computer group, craft circle, and a children’s book club.

Get to Know Your Librarian: Pam Jones District Children’s and Young Adult Librarian

How long have I been a librarian?

I have worked for the South Taranaki District Council for 12 years.

On leaving school I trained as a journalist and worked for the Hawera Star and Taranaki Daily News. I then became a stay at home Mum for 15 years, homeschooling my children for 10 of those years. When my youngest turned 5 years old I decided to retrain and began studying with the Open Polytechnic to complete my library and information papers.

I became registered in 2010.

What is the most rewarding part of my job?

I’m very passionate about finding the right book for any child or teenager that comes into the library. Books are empowering.

When the right book is put into someone’s hands it has the power to change lives.

The right book helps us see the world a little differently; to perhaps change the way we feel or act.

It can answer questions and can sooth a troubled soul.

Children who don’t read, miss out on these opportunities.

I love my job best when I see a non-reader become a reader – all because they were introduced to the right book for them.

What is my favourite book that I would recommend?

That’s a hard question. I have favourite children’s authors – Emily Rodda, Tamora Pierce, Brian Falkner, Jennifer Barnes, Isobelle Carmody and favourite adult authors like Nicky Pellegrino, Anna Jacobs, Sara Donati... the list goes on.

I don’t go much for intellectual books. I am a Science Fantasy freak and also love to read books that leave me contented and in love with the world. I am particular when I choose books. I manage to read about three per week and it’s not very often I get a dud. Lots and lots of favourites!

Dark Blood by Stuart MacBride Reviewed by Sue McMillan Martin Knox, a convicted violent rapist who found God while in prison, has been released back into the community. Detective Logan MacRae is part of the team assigned to help Knox settle into his new life outside of prison. Logan isn’t thrilled with babysitting Knox, especially when he’s been partnered with DSI Danby, the officer responsible for putting Knox away. Why is Danby being sought by three heavies from Newcastle who want a quiet word with the officer? And what about Edinburgh gangster Malk the Knife, who wants a slice of Donald Trump’s golf course development, while local crime lord Wee Hamish Mowat fights to keep the newcomer out.

Dark Blood is book 6 in the Logan MacRae detective series. Filled with torture, violence and some excellent one-liners from Logan’s boss, the lesbian detective DSI Steele, Dark Blood is a thrilling read. For an extra special treat, get the book in audio format, read by the author. The narration perfectly fits the story. Lovers of Martina Cole will find this series enthralling.

Feature: Waverley Book Club Librarian Sarah Kennedy was asked to investigate the possibility of having a book club at Waverley Library, and she started researching the idea by mentioning it to a few keen readers, who seemed disposed to stop and chat about the books they had been reading.

Without exception, they all recoiled in horror at the first mention of the words book and club together! Intrigued, she probed a little farther, but they all felt intimidated by the idea and felt that they were going to have to read difficult books they wouldn’t like, and then be tested on them! Not a fun way to spend your time.

Sarah had a think about this, as she was convinced by her observations of them chatting with each other whenever they met a fellow book lover at the counter, that this would be a great addition to their lives. She came up with the idea of a low key informal gathering to chat about books they all loved, and that the group would decide together how the club would be run.

The group decided to meet once a month and Sarah was very nervous about the first meeting as they were pretty sceptical. However, they take it in turns to recommend a book (nobody has to read it), they have a quiz, which they take turns to set, have an afternoon tea and take turns to bake/buy, all talk about other books they have read and Sarah ensures she has some of the newer titles available to look at. Fairly informal discussions take place about the books everyone has been reading. Sometimes it is rather desultory and other times we have very impassioned discussions, when feelings are running high about particular characters/plots.

Now, a few years on, the group’s membership has increased to ten. They have had an outing to a literary festival, been out for afternoon tea and had two Christmas parties. The Waverley Librarian is glad that they persevered as it has enriched everyone’s lives.

Keep an Eye Out For: Travelling Tuataras Jill Walker and Brian Potiki have been bringing stories alive with songs and story theatre (including puppets, bucket-drums, bright cloths and windsocks) since 1983!

Jill is a singer multimedia artist and community art worker. Brian Potiki is a poet, songwriter, drummer, director, actor and a writer with two books published.

With their wildly-coloured suitcase full of storytelling magic, the Travelling Tuataras are legendary art adventurers , fun makers and performers who have enchanted thousands of children (and the young at heart!) with their unique way of bringing stories alive.

SPCA Collection Box During the month of February, South Taranaki Libraries are celebrating pets with Love Your Pet month. Pop into Hawera LibraryPlus anytime during February to donate pet food to the local SPCA. There will be a collection box in the Library.

Aotea Utanganui Museum of South Taranaki Aotea Utanganui – Museum of South Taranaki is located on the main street in Patea. Aotea Utanganui is a purposebuilt, architecturally-designed museum building that enhances the streetscape of Patea and provides a central point for culture and heritage in the South Taranaki district. The museum is at 127 Egmont Street, Patea; open from 10.00am to 4.00pm every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Entry is free.

The new exhibition at Aotea Utanganui is Flickering Light: Taranaki Cinema History and runs from 7 February to 25 April 2013.

Flickering Light: Taranaki Cinema History showcases the once thriving cinema culture in the Taranaki region. Curated from the collections of Aotea Utanganui – Museum of South Taranaki, Puke Ariki and Archives New Zealand, Flickering Light: Taranaki Cinema History explores the regional cinemas’ influence within communities and how they shaped the viewing appetite of theatre-goers. The decline of cinema attendance in the late 1960’s was mainly attributed to the introduction of television - a trend that continued.
