Libraries and Cultural Services Welcome to the Summer Edition of More Than Books. As I write this, the sun is shining, the sky is blue and I have noticed a few flowers on the Pohutukawa trees already, yippee ď Š. As you can see we have made some changes to the format of our booklet as we have a new editor who felt we needed a more updated image. We would love to get your feedback on this new look so please email me lynne.walker@stdc.govt.nz or drop a message into your local library.

This Summer edition covers the happenings in the South Taranaki Libraries over December and January. Our big event during this time is the Summer Reading Programme which runs over the 6 weeks of the holidays and usually involves at least 300 children from all over South Taranaki and all the library staff. There is information about Aotea Utanganui - The Museum of South Taranaki and the current exhibition The Art of Collage. This is the perfect place to visit if you get a wet day, so take the kids and explore your history. There is no entry fee to pay. Of course, a Koha is appreciated.

My reading over this holiday period is usually light fiction as it means I can relax and enjoy my books without too much thought. I once knew a high school English teacher who would come into my library every December when school finished and take out a whole boxload of Mills and Boons to read – she used to say that was all she wanted after a year of serious reading and spending long nights marking students work. So read whatever gives you pleasure and relax for the summer.

Adrian Kirk

Storyteller coming to South Taranaki Libraries for the Summer Reading Programme!

Adrian Kirk is coming to South Taranaki Libraries as part of the Summer Reading Programme The Great Book Mystery. He will be at each library over two days in January: Monday 21 and Tuesday 22.

Adrian Kirk presents a unique and polished performance. He combines his awesome skills as a juggler, unicyclist and comedian with a lively, engaging and hilarious discussion about some of his favourite books. The result is an hour-long, high energy, fun-filled show guaranteed to have the whole room excited by books and inspired to read more.

A highly entertaining and interactive show promoting the message that "Reading Rocks!"

This is a free event to attend and is aimed at children aged between 5 to 12 years. If you would like to find out more information about when Adrian will be coming to your local LibraryPlus, please contact your Library or go to Page 6 for times and libraries.

Aotea Utanganui

Museum of South Taranaki Aotea Utanganui – Museum of South Taranaki is located on the main street in Patea. Aotea Utanganui is a purpose-built, architecturallydesigned museum building that enhances the streetscape of Patea and provides a central point for culture and heritage in the South Taranaki district. The museum is at 127 Egmont Street, Patea; open from 10.00am to 4.00pm every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Entry is free.

The Art of Collage is an international exhibition of the collage artform. This exhibition is curated by Dale Copeland with Cameron Curd. The Art of Collage exhibition is on from 1 November 2012 until 11 January 2013 in the main exhibition gallery at Aotea Utanganui – Museum of South Taranaki.

Get to Know your Librarian: Josephine Gibson – Customer Services Librarian at Eltham LibraryPlus

How long have you been a librarian?

I have worked for the South Taranaki District Council for 10 years.

I left Fonterra after 12 years thinking I would have a nice part-time job, minimal hours, something in my community that I could enjoy. When I look back, I had no idea what working in our libraries would entail, so managing customer requests, interments or rates payments wasn’t something I had thought of as part of the job description.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I like that I live and work in my community, I enjoy knowing I make a difference when customers come through the door. I like knowing the customers leave happy and that an issue has been dealt with for them positively. I also love working with the children. I have a lot of childhood memories of libraries and reading and hope that our libraries provide happy memories for future generations.

What is your favourite book that you would recommend?

I have so many favourite books and authors it’s hard to keep track – if you asked me this question 2 years ago they would have all been picture books!

At the moment though I love E-books. I love that I can go online reserve, download and return books without leaving the house.

Lynne Walker reviews Is There Something in the Water? 25 Years of Ronald Hugh Morrieson

This book, published in October 2012, contains a potted history of the Ronald Hugh Morrieson Literary Awards which are run annually by the South Taranaki Libraries. To celebrate 25 years of awards all of the winning entries, bar one, were tracked down and put into this volume of 157 pages. What a wealth of short stories and poems there are covering topics of teenage angst, family life and South Taranaki style places and spaces. I have had it by me on my desk and each day I pick it up and read another story or poem and they are great.

One poem which caught my eye and enticed me to read further starts “The old woman sat in her armchair, her skin like rumpled velvet” How could you not want to read this poem by Erana Hokopaura in 2001? The libraries have copies of the book for you to borrow or you could purchase the book as a unique Christmas gift. I highly recommend it.

A Closer Look:

Opunake LibraryPlus Opunake LibraryPlus was built on the site of the former Wai Yep & Co General Store, on the corner of Tasman and Havelock Streets which closed in 1977. Charlie Yep then reopened it so that “people could come in off the streets and have a cup of coffee.”** In 1986 Charlie Yep sold the building which was then pulled down by local bikers, the Costal Riders and the Opunake Lions Club. In replacement of this building, Opunake got a new TSB Bank and a community library. Hon Roger Maxwell MP opened the building on 1 July 1987. The library was known as the Egmont Library and Cultural Centre.

In 1989 Egmont County became part of the South Taranaki District Council and in 2003 Council and Tourist Information Services were added to the Egmont Library which made this a LibraryPlus. Opunake LibraryPlus now continues to provide morning tea and a cuppa on a Friday morning; this is run by a group of ladies called the ‘Friends of the Library’ as part of the agreement that was made over 20 years ago when Charlie Yep sold the building to the Council. Opunake LibraryPlus offer a range of Council services including taking payments for rates, dog registrations and greenwaste, holding property files and doing cemetery interments and enquiries as well as offering a full library service with free wifi and computers on the Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa. **Information was collected from staff and Virginia Winder’s Story ‘A Toast to Yep Family’
