Welcome World Mental Health Day, on 10 October, is about Dignity in mental health. There’s been a lot in the media about the impact of stress, financial losses and so on for people in the farming sector. We were fortunate to have Sir John Kirwan (JK) visit South Taranaki recently as part of his work with depression.org.nz We’ve been involved in the Turn the Page campaign since 2011. Turn the Page books cover eight different areas of mental health including depression and anxiety. Statistics show one in five will experience mental illness at some time in their lives but only two out of three people will seek professional help. That’s because the stigma and discrimination of having a mental illness is seen as worse than having a mental illness itself. If you would like to find out more about the Turn the Page books look online or ask any of our staff – we’re here to help, not to judge. The LibraryPlus are marking Migrants Day in December. Watching the news each night as Syrians pour into Europe, and seeing the increasing tension at some countries borders, I’m grateful we live in a safe country – and that New Zealand takes in migrants every year. Do we do enough as a nation? I don’t know. But I do know throughout New Zealand libraries play an important role in welcoming migrants and providing opportunities to assist them in settling into their new lives, and that has to be worth celebrating. Of course, we’re still firmly in the books and information industry so if you’d like help finding a new author, a specific title, or information on anything from aardvark to zygotes, just ask – we’re always happy to help.

Last chance café written by Liz Byrski
Last Chance Cafe by Liz Byrski is a novel dealing with women ageing and their reactions to this. Dot is a fire eating women’s rights campaigner of old and the story starts with her chaining herself to the escalator in a shopping mall. Quite by chance an old friend sees this and rescues her from the guards called by management. As the two friends catch up we meet the rest of the characters and gradually see the links forming between them all. The novel also has a serious side as the issue of young girls being made into sexual objects by commercial interests turns into a campaign. There is also the ageism problem of older women feeling invisible. Once again Liz Byrski caught me up in the story and I would recommend this to my friends and book club.

written by Mark Pryor A first book by this author and what a great start to his career. Set in Paris with an American hero and a French heroine, this is a murder mystery and thriller combined with a low key romance.
Knooking
written by Veronica Hug I was really looking forward to this book. A whole different way to use my crohet hook. But its not. It is a book about tuscian crochet. I found the pictures too small, and I already knew what I was looking at. It was good to have a book with patterns for that style of crochet though. They are nice quick patterns.
Easy to read, it evokes the feel of Paris brilliantly, especially the café scene which is the life blood of that great city. Interesting characters come to Nutbutters life and you get quite carried written by away (well, I did!) by the twists Mary Loudermilk and turns of the story which This is a great book. It shows covers drugs, book sellers and Parisians who collaborated with you how to make a basic nut butter, and then gives you the Nazis during WW2. lost of recipes for variations. Clear, concise and with For a change, our hero and heroine (a journalist) both have plenty of pictures. If you want to try nut butters, this is the a conscience but this doesn’t stop the guy making a mess of book for you. some of the villains! Both reviewed by Highly recommended. Sharon
