Welcome

Over the last few weeks the weather has turned cold, and boy has it rained! With winter approaching it’s a good time to remind you about downloading eBooks and Audio books from home if you run out of reading (ask staff for help if you are not sure what to do) and that you can email or phone us to renew your books if you’re stuck at home. Thanks to a generous grant from the TSB Community Trust we have installed large touch screens in Hawera, Opunake, Manaia, Kaponga and Eltham LibraryPlus for use with Press Reader. Press Reader gives users free access to over 3,000 newspapers and magazines from around the world. This is fantastic for news junkies and great for immigrants who want to catch up on news from home. Press Reader can also be used from the comfort of your own home, via southtaranaki.com. Did you know we have a large collection of graphic novels for children and adults? We have recently moved them all to Hawera, and purchased a lovely new stand for them, so they are in one large collection*. Graphic novels are not just “comics” – many are sophisticated stories for adults, including non-fiction. One of my favourites is Persepolis in which the great-granddaughter of Iran’s last emperor, and the daughter of ardent Marxists, describes growing up in Tehran in a country plagued by political upheaval and vast contradictions between public and private life. You can find me on Twitter as @KiwiLibrarian or drop in to my office in Hawera LibraryPlus for a chat. You can email me on cath.sheard@stdc.govt.nz. *This should be available by mid June.

Reviews from our Readers

The Bawdy Basket Edward Marston This is a good mystery set around the Elizabethan age and the hero detective Nicholas Bracewell is a member of a band of Thespians. He sets out to help a fellow actor and friend clear his fathers name after he is executed for a murder he did not commit. The scenes are set well and the flavour of the time is captured nicely. No gratuitous violence just a good old fashioned murder mystery. A good set of characters who it would appear are to be found in other novels by Edward Marston I intend to seek them out. So if you enjoy historical crime and an easy read look for this author and enjoy the read. Reviewed by Lynne

In Touch with Grace Jenny Patrick Yet another great book by this New Zealand author. This one is set in a middle class suburb and concerns the life of Grace, an elderly widow. She belongs to the local bowls club and this is where she finds most of her social interaction but she also has a very good friend in Mildred, another widow. She comes across an old flame and breaks the calm flow of her very even life when they become friends in the nicest possible way. The author brings her characters to life and the reader becomes their friend, so well does she capture the ups and downs of old age. A lovely book and very highly recommended. Reviewed by Roger

The Skeleton Road Val McDermid My first Val McDermid novel and I was expecting a ‘who dunnit’ with a Scottish setting. I got that and more. This story is about the Balkans War and the crimes it deals in are more complex and far reaching than a ‘simple’ murder. Its about justice, revenge, loss and death. The war history is revealed as it is entwined with a current Scottish murder investigation. Not an easy read but worth it. There are five vowels and ten consonants in the Māori alphabet. five vowels: a, e, i, o, u eight consonants: h, k, m n, p, r, t, w two digraphs (two letters that combine to form one sound): wh, ng.

Vowels

While there are five vowels, combinations of vowels (diphthongs) are common. You should regard these vowel sounds as a larger group of simply the five vowels alone. A vowel can be long or short. A long sound is shown by a macron (a bar appearing over a vowel e.g. ‘ā’ in motokā). Orthographic conventions advise when a macron is used.

Vowels are pronounced as follows: short a as in e as in i as in o as in u as in

about enter eat awful put

far bed sheep pork boot

New Books Killing for Keeps Mari Hannah It’s in the blood. Two brothers from the same criminal family die within hours of each other, five miles apart, one on the edge of a Newcastle industrial estate, the other in a busy A & E department of a local hospital, unseen by the triage team. Both victims have suffered horrific injuries. Who wanted them dead? Will they kill again?

Still Life Christa Parrish A tragic plane crash. One woman who lost her husband. Another who gave up her seat for him. Adah spent her first twenty-five years with her family as part of a fringe religious sect. Then she met Julian, a photojournalist who’d come to document their lifestyle. They eloped mere days later and Adah was thrust into a completely new life as a wife, city-dweller, and an individual allowed to make her own decisions. But she has no idea who she is.

Investigating these brutal and bloody killings leads DCI Kate Daniels to break some rules, putting her career as well as her life on the line. As the body count rises in the worst torture case Northumbria Police has ever seen, the focus of the enquiry switches, first to Glasgow and then to Europe ending in a confrontation with a dangerous offender hell-bent on revenge.

On her twenty-sixth birthday, Julian plans to fly home from an assignment. He’s thrilled when Katherine Cramer gives up her seat so he can make the flight. But the plane crashes and everyone on board is killed, including Julian. Adah is completely at a loss, with no friends and no marketable skills. When Julian’s last photographs are published, her life errupts into chaos. She begins travelling--with Julian’s camera for a companion--searching for answers to who she is and what she really wants.
