I
n the 1995 movie “Braveheart,” the battle of Falkirk is remembered as the heartbreaking defeat of William Wallace when the freedom fighter realized the treachery of the Scottish establishment. It was indeed a loss for Scotland, but it was also the beginning of the end of King Edward’s ambitions in the nation. Wallace lost the battle — with many casualties — but ignited the spark of freedom that ultimately won the war. For the past few decades, conservatives have felt like we’ve been losing the battle. From Hollywood to academia, from corporations to government, from special interest groups to the mainstream media, a growing and strident anti-Christian, anti-American sentiment has long dominated the most powerful institutions in America. Today, we have an opportunity to embolden a new generation of patriots to fight back with resilience, and like Wallace, hold up the banner for freedom and advance rather than retreat. Bemoaning the rise of leftism is no longer enough, and turning the other cheek in our personal relationships with our neighbors as Jesus taught while abdicating our responsibilities
on the cultural battlefield is no longer sufficient. There is too much at stake in the battle for the soul of our nation. Bold, unapologetic action and initiative is needed, which is why together we just launched the Falkirk Center, a think tank dedicated to restoring and defending American ideals and JudeoChristian values in all aspects of life. The two of us grew up in different generations with vastly different perspectives, but our goal is the same and our vision is clear. The principles of the Falkirk Center transcend generational divides and withstand cultural trends, as we believe they are rooted in compelling, enduring, absolute truths. As the creeds of secularism are proving fragile and unsatisfying to millions of Americans, there has never been a better time to fill this void and amplify these truths. Earlier this year, a WSJ/NBC poll made national headlines after revealing a drastic 20-point drop in the number of young Americans today versus two decades ago who name patriotism and religion as important values. It came as no surprise to those who have been paying attention to the rampant antiAmerican, secular sentiment that has
plagued our society, starting in our institutions of learning. In recent months alone, an elementary school banned the phrase “God bless America” and a university listed “America” and “American” as offensive words “to avoid.” Even more alarming, the overwhelming majority of America’s elite universities no longer require history majors to take a single course in American history. Students often say they chose Liberty University over public universities because of mandatory speech codes at the publics. Upcoming generations are falling victim to the teachings of secularism primarily because they’re not learning America’s exceptional ideals. Further, attacks on religious freedom have caused them to abandon their Christian roots in droves. It’s no coincidence that as young people’s acceptance of traditional values declines, depression and anxiety is reaching record highs. They are hungry for fulfillment and truth like never before, and right now, the only option for them is the siren-song of secularism promoted by the far-left. Today we have a tremendous opportunity to provide our youth and other Americans an alternative to the left’s unfulfilling and outright dishonest attempt to provide a purposeful

life. We also have an opportunity to provide clarity to a passionate, yet confused generation of believers. Accomplishing this requires more than adding noise to the echo chamber. It requires an army of bold ambassadors equipped with Judeo-Christian and Constitutional knowledge to speak truth to believers and unbelievers alike in every professional field and public forum. This includes Christian leaders and influencers of all ages and backgrounds defending, explaining, and sharing their beliefs on all platforms and sectors of society. That is the function and the moral mission of the Falkirk Center. We will go on offense in the name of Judeo-Christian principles and in the name of exceptional, God-given American liberties. Thankfully, we don’t have to render ourselves powerless as the left misguides our youth. Much like Wallace’s struggle for freedom, we need brave, tenacious, passionate fighters to prevail in our war to save the greatest nation on Earth. The Falkirk Center will be on the frontlines of this war, and we believe, like the passionate freedom fighters that courageously charged into the breach before us, we will eventually see victory.

n the current battle for our culture, two weapons have damaged the belief in objective moral truth: atheistic political philosophies and the idea that consent is all one needs to justify any behavior.
culture war by jettisoning biblical truth and leading congregants to “find your truth.” They subjectively apply biblical principles instead of teaching theology, and then seem puzzled when the flock no longer believes in universal moral truth. So what does that mean, in practical terms, for social issues today?
Consent culture asserts that so long as a person has a desire or feeling — and therefore consents — the government should not intervene. The progressive agenda asserts that as long as an adult consents, what business does the government have interfering? If there’s no objective standard, then there should be no judgment! We’ve lost the basis of what legitimate government means in a self-governed society. Remember, our rights don’t come from government or even from ourselves. Our rights come from our Creator, by virtue of being made in His image.
Self-governance does not mean we each get to determine our own truth and reality. It does not mean that a will of a sheer majority can decide what is moral or immoral in society. It makes no difference if one person, 51%, or 100% of people think abortion should be a valid choice— it is still inherently morally wrong because it is a medical intervention to intentionally kill a human being without justification. Self-governance means we are free to make choices within the context of reality. We shouldn’t give up on social issues, or the universality of morality. This is the original intent of the Constitution, built upon the Declaration’s recognition that truth is self-evident and our rights come from our Creator. Generally, Americans are taught that “we the people” are infallible and inherently legitimate as a 51% majority. If the majority agrees on something, it must therefore be right. But the unpopular truth is that democracies—and constitutional republics even—only survive the test of legitimacy when that government system operates according to fundamental, objective moral truth. We cannot legitimize evil through a political mechanism any more than we can legislate ourselves
out of the Earth’s elliptical orbit. Humans simply do not have that control. Regardless of how many tyrants a given society has, no human, singular or collective, is unlimited in power. Reality shows us that self-evident truth. Our Founders began with the premise that the government’s only legitimate role is to protect and preserve our God-given rights. The government does not define our rights. It should not infringe upon our rights, giving and taking them at whim. Nor should it replace God’s measurable standard of moral legitimacy with the moral illegitimacies of one tyrant (or a million tyrants). Our Founders created this American experiment to preserve freedom and liberty for all because they understood that genuine freedom and liberty cannot be protected for all without a moral foundation.

have been studying China and its ruling Chinese Communist Party for the past 60 years. For much of that time, like many American policymakers and experts, I thought that communist-ruled China would evolve into a system that was based on freedom, openness, and the rule of law. However, as I’ve watched the power and reach of the Chinese Communist Party grow – and its system of control, surveillance, and oppression dramatically expand and strengthen – I’ve come to realize that the vision for a liberated system in China under the rule of the CCP was wrong. he Falkirk Center is working for faith and freedom, two terms that have helped define our country and the Christian Church.
Both are key themes of our beliefs – in Exodus Moses displays faith through his fight for the Israelite’s release from bondage and in Luke 4:18 Jesus proclaims freedom for captives and the oppressed. Jesus was King but did not coerce, offering freedom as a choice. Yet, within 300 years, Constantine would declare the Roman Empire to be Christian. The Founders of the United States built the logic of faith and freedom into our Constitution and institutions, declaring that all citizens of the United States should be guaranteed the basic inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. No coercion. Rights are God given and the job of the government is to protect these rights, never to deconstruct them. Today, most institutions of higher education are doing just that – deconstructing rationality and rights while removing faith and freedom from their vocabulary. After decades of this assault on faith and freedom we are now seeing the results; a political party that has removed all God language from its platform and created a near void of freedom of speech on college campuses.

Yet, no alternative religion has been offered and perhaps that is the point. This sanitized environment has created the perfect soil for political elites to plant the seeds of socialism as both the new religion and the long-awaited solution to economic and political imperfections. It is not surprising that these secular revisionists, including at least one presidential candidate, claim that Jesus Christ was a socialist. Is this bold claim true? The answer requires a clear understanding of what socialism is and is not. Socialism is not “sharing” things with others and it is not helping the poor. People in free market countries do those things every day—far more than people in socialist countries do, in fact. Stripped of fuzzy rhetoric and kumbaya spin-doctoring, the hard fact is that Socialism is the concentration of political power for the purposes of 1) redistributing income, 2) controlling people and the economy and/or 3) promoting government ownership of the means of production. Socialism is not voluntary nor is it not simply a list of helpful tips and suggestions. Socialism rests on force that is fueled by envy and class warfare. Socialism is coercion by its very definition and practice. Even a beginning student of the Gospels will see that Jesus never endorsed Socialism. He was concerned about
far more important matters, namely, personal salvation and character. Jesus knew that concentrated earthly power was inevitably harmful and corrupting and he spoke out against it throughout his earthly ministry.

efore I was saved, I clung to a false version of female empowerment. My whole life has been one long quest to regain what I lost when I was a child. In Nigeria, my innocence was taken from me at the young age of 5 years old. And from that day forward, my sole mission to get that power back consumed me. I know what it means to be completely vulnerable and defenseless. But Christ uses everything, even the most tragic events of this world, to bring glory to his name. And eventually, he led me to the Truth.
For the most part, my political beliefs mirrored my mother’s. She’s a die-hard Democrat through and through but still continues to hold onto her strict Roman Catholic beliefs. Fortunately, my mom thought the pro-life issue was a no brainer. A belief, for most of my young adulthood, I did not share.
I grew up in a broken home. Shortly after my traumatic trip to Nigeria, my dad went to prison for 20 years for drug trafficking crimes. My single African immigrant mother was left with my three younger siblings and me. Because of my mother’s nursing profession and by the grace of God she was able to keep us in the same home and neighborhood after my father left. Fortunately, that meant decent schooling in a relatively safe, lowermiddle-class neighborhood.
In 2010, through the faithfulness of a former college roommate, I gave my life to Christ. That alone changed everything about my point of view. I couldn’t reconcile my modern feminist, prochoice, anti-gun beliefs with the woman I had just become: Born again. God gave me a desire and conviction to protect the most vulnerable and defenseless among us: the unborn and the women without access to self-defense.

By college, I was the quintessential feminist. I prided myself in my regular involvement with a feminist group that taught feminism and public policy to students in the inner-city charter schools.
In 2011, my quest for equality and my anti-gun beliefs finally came to a head. I came to the realization that there was something missing in the feminist movement. I wasn’t able to reconcile why a movement that claimed to want equality between men and women didn’t advocate for those same independent women to embrace their God-given right to selfprotection. It was finally obvious that self-defense rights are women’s rights. I decided that I had to be a part of the movement that believed the same way I did.

he only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Edmund Burke knew that action was indispensable to the survival of liberty. Today, freedom is more fragile than ever. With the growth of federal power and the ever-widening moral and religious gap, Christians in America face the greatest tests of any previous generation. There’s work to do. Many resources are devoted to Christian living, but few deal in concrete and meaningful terms for participation in civic life. The 2016 presidential election demonstrated this when up-and-coming, evangelical figureheads recklessly urged young people towards political dereliction. The point was overly simplistic, abandon the ballot box, write-in a candidate, or risk having your faith and integrity publicly excoriated. Thankfully evangelicals in record number ignored the counsel of the pseudo intelligentsia and disaster was diverted. Many lessons were learned in the 2016 race, but not everyone learned them. The urgency to address the younger generation is greater than ever.
The Apostle Paul wrote, “The kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but power” (1 Cor 4:20). Just as in Paul’s day, there’s no shortage of religious teachers puffed up with theological conceit, promoting an idyllic picture of life without entanglements or dilemmas. They believe piety is to be praised over action or involvement. Christians should not be confused about what political engagement means or requires. It does not mean surrendering the Gospel in the name of a lesser ruler or authority. It’s not the conflation of the church with a political party. Voting does require genuine biblical reflection and wisdom about God’s working in the world. Dietrich Bonhoeffer knew opposing the Nazi regime meant leaving the safety of the academy and facing certain death. William Wilberforce knew that abolishing slavery required more than lofty ideals, it meant persistent engagement and keen interest in British law. Tragically, young people today only get half-baked ideas with halftruths, which leads to a half-hearted interest in the political process.
Who can blame them? They haven’t yet raised a family, participated in the economy, or paid the lion’s share of taxes. They are standing in the gap of a critical disconnect with history.

ot too long ago, I wasn’t very political. I had my own personal beliefs and convictions that anchored my faith, but I didn’t share my feelings too openly. They were personal. I was born in a small town in Northern California called Redding. It was a predominantly Caucasian area and I’m pretty sure that of the black population in Redding, half of them were my family, and there was the other half. My beautiful mother was white, of Irish descent, and my dad was a large black man. I used to tell my friends that hadn’t met him yet that he looked like two Mr. T’s combined into one man. I grew up in a loving Christian home; we went to church every Sunday. I’m told that when I was about six or seven years old, I had a Bible verse

memorized for every letter of the alphabet. I was a happy kid. At age nine, I was getting out of school just like any normal day but, instead of walking home, my dad met me at the school entrance in his big GMC van. He said, “Hop in, son.” I did and we left town. I didn’t see my mother again for several months. When I did, it was in court. My parents were getting a divorce. I’ll never forget the judge inviting me into his chambers to ask me, “Son, who would you rather live with, your father or your mother…?” I can’t remember thinking about the color of my skin before that day, but at that moment, that young boy felt that since his dad was dark and that he was a man, that he would rather live with him. And, oh how that decision impacted the next 30 years of my life. We didn’t go to church anymore after that although my convictions and belief in God were still deeply rooted inside of me. I never questioned if God existed. I just knew that to be true. I never questioned whether life began in the womb. I always felt that a baby inside of the womb was just as much a real life baby as one outside of the womb. And this was the crux which launched me onto the media/
political scene in 2016. After the third presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, I got on Facebook to share my pro-life feelings and what I felt was at stake for our country.
