After helping Incarnate Word reach the NCAA FCS Playoffs during its second year of postseason eligibility, Rickey Hunley helped Liberty win its first-ever bowl game during his first season at cornerbacks coach in 2019. During his one season at Incarnate Word, Hunley served as safeties coach and recruiting coordinator in 2018. After completing their transition process from Division II to the FCS level of Division I football, Hunley helped the Cardinals post a 6-2 record in conference play in 2018, capturing the Southland Conference title and earning a berth into the playoffs. Incarnate Word led the Southland Conference and ranked fourth nationally in turnovers gained (30). Prior to his year at Incarnate Word, Hunley served as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at West Georgia (2015-17). Working alongside fellow Liberty coaching staff Josh Aldridge, Sam Gregg, and Scott Symons, Hunley helped West Georgia to two NCAA Division II playoff appearances (2015 and 2017), a 12-win season, NCAA Division II Super Region title, and the Gulf South Conference crown in 2015. Hunley also spent two seasons at Southwest Baptist (2013-14), as well as time at Lindenwood (2012) and his alma mater Drake (2007). He broke into the coaching profession at the high school level in Iowa (2004-06) and Missouri (2010-11) and served as an athletic academic coordinator at Iowa State in 2008.

FLAMES FLASHBACK: 2019 AND 2020 SEASON REVIEW

• Hunley’s cornerbacks have played a vital role in Liberty winning back-to-back FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl titles in 2019 and 2020. • With the pair of Cure Bowl victories, Liberty became the second FBS transitioning team in NCAA history to win consecutive bowl games during its first two full seasons at the FBS level. • Liberty finished the 2020 season with a 10-1 record and ranked No. 17 in the final Associated Press poll, its highest end-of-the-year national ranking in program history. • The Flames finished the 2020 season ranked No. 11 in the country in total defense (317.7 yards allowed per game), No. 12 in passing yards allowed (184.0 per game), and No. 22 in scoring defense (20.5 points allowed per game). • Marcus Haskins and Chris Megginson finished the 2020 season with 30 tackles each to lead the Flames’ cornerbacks. • Haskins was one of 16 Flames named to the 2020 Phil Steele FBS Independent All-Conference team after leading Liberty with four pass breakups. • The Flames’ cornerbacks helped Liberty finished the 2020 season ranked No. 23 in the country in interceptions (11). • Following the 2020 NFL Draft, cornerback Bejour Wilson signed a free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals. • Along with Wilson, three other free agent signees, and fourth-round draft selection Antonio Gandy-Golden (WR), Liberty had five players sign with NFL franchises in 2020, the most in program history. • The Flames finished the 2019 season ranked No. 28 in the country in sacks (2.69 per game) and No. 31 in interceptions (12).
