TODAY’S GAME 5) Liberty ranks No. 12 nationally with 238.1 rushing yards per game. The Flames are 12-0 under Hugh Freeze when outrushing their opponent, including 7-0 this season. Liberty has rushed for 200+ yards six times in 2020 but was held to a season-low 107 yards on the ground at NC State. The Flames will try to get back on track versus UMass, which allows 238.3 rushing yards per game. Anthony Butler, LB
SENIOR DAY
With today being the Flames’ final home game of the 2020 season, Liberty will recognize 17 seniors prior to kickoff. The Flames are 11-2 on their last 13 Senior Days at Williams Stadium. This year’s seniors include Benjamin Alexander, Alex Barbir, Chris Barrett, Damian Bounds, Jake Brickell, Brody Brumm, Anthony Butler, Emanuel Dabney, Kimani Donaldson, Jimmy Faulks, Chris Ferguson, Trevor Hobbs, Johnny Huntley, Elijah James, Tim Kid-Glass, Maisen Knight, Joshua Mack, Bryce Matthews, Elisha Mitchell, Peytton Pickett, Boyd Rogish, Ralf Rusins, Thomas Sargeant, Jayod Sanders, Tristan Schultz, Kevin Shaa, Tyron Staples, Cedric Stone, DJ Stubbs, Matt Terrell, and Mason Wolk.
STORYLINES
1) Liberty (8-1) will wrap up its 2020 home schedule with a Black Friday matchup with fellow FBS independent squad UMass (0-3). 2) The Flames will attempt to bounce back from a 14-15 loss at NC State, which snapped a 10-game winning streak. A win on Friday would equal Liberty’s longest home winning streak in program history at 11 contests. 3) Friday’s matinee will serve as a rubber match of sorts. UMass topped Liberty 62-59 in 3OT in 2018 before the Flames countered with a 63-21 win over the Minutemen last season. Both of those contests took place in Massachusetts. 4) Liberty QB Malik Willis, a recent addition to the Maxwell Award Watch List (best all-around FBS player), is the only FBS player to rank among the nation’s top 15 for both passing TDs (17) and rushing TDs (9). Willis leads all FBS QBs with a team-high 744 rushing yards.
6) The Liberty defense ranks among the nation’s leaders in total yards allowed (No. 12, 309.4 yards/game). Last week, the Flames limited a high-powered NC State offense to season lows for points (15) and total yards (320).
“4 DOWNS” WITH THE MINUTEMEN
1) Making its inaugural trip to Williams Stadium, UMass is the only opponent Liberty has faced during each of its first three FBS seasons. The Flames and Minutemen are scheduled to face one another for the next five years as well (2021-25). 2) Liberty and UMass are two of four FBS independents playing football this fall. Friday’s game will mark the first meeting between FBS independent squads in 2020 and could end up as the only such contest this season. 3) Pass protection will be key on Friday, as both Liberty (2.7) and UMass (2.7) are averaging nearly three sacks per contest this season. 4) UMass is averaging just 4.0 points per game through its first three contests of 2020. At the opposite end of the scoring spectrum, Liberty is averaging 61.0 points per game against the Minutemen during two previous meetings. UMass is playing its fourth straight road game this season, looking to snap a 10-game road losing streak.
MILESTONE WATCH
7: QB Malik Willis is seven touchdowns away from breaking Mike Brown’s Liberty singleseason record of most touchdowns responsible for (32), set in 2010. 19: WR DJ Stubbs is 19 yards away from 1,500 for his career. 111: QB Malik Willis needs 111 rushing yards to set the Liberty single-season rushing record for quarterbacks. Mike Brown owns the current record, rushing for 854 yards in 2010.

WILLIAMS STADIUM CLEAR BAG POLICY CLEAR BAG POLICY
In an effort to enhance fan safety and expedite entrance to Williams Stadium, Liberty University has implemented a security screening process. This includes a clear bag policy that limits the size and type of bag that can be brought into the stadium by fans. The implementation of this measure is intended to enhance public safety while minimizing time spent searching bags at gate security checkpoints, thus easing access into the stadium.
The policy is consistent with the NFL’s current model. Only clear tote bags that do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12” or one-gallon plastic freezer bags will be allowed in Williams Stadium. In addition, small handheld clutch purses no larger than 4.5” x 6.5” will be permitted. Spectators will also be able to carry other items into the stadium, such as binoculars, cameras, and smartphones.
Liberty’s clear bag policy has been in effect since 2016 and will be strictly enforced during the 2020 football season.

PLAYER FEATURE STORY FOR THE BELIEVERS
So, when I was given the chance to play for Liberty, I couldn’t have been more excited, man.
I wasn’t supposed to be here.
I just wanted to make my family and coaches proud, you know? That was my biggest aspiration.
DJ STUBBS
Some didn’t even believe I’d make it past middle school, much less have a chance to graduate from college. I was diagnosed with dyslexia at a very young age, and things didn’t come as easy for me as others in the classroom. Imagine being stamped a failure in elementary school. It hurt! Not only did I want to prove I could overcome my learning disability, but I wanted to show people that you shouldn’t judge a person by what you can’t see. It doesn’t matter if you’re the smartest or most talented kid. What matters is that the right people believe in you. And it has to start from within, you know? You have to believe in yourself.
THROUGH TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS My life has always been a bit different just based on the trials and tribulations I was going through. But I could always turn to sports as an escape. When I was a kid, I always felt like sports could potentially lead to my way out. At first, it was really all about basketball for me. I did play football too, but mostly because my mother didn’t want me to put all my eggs in one basket early on. But then there was my little brother. I still get chills just thinking about the amazing things he did on the football field growing up — from converting game-winning first downs to standing up people on the goal line. I may be the older brother, but it was my younger brother that inspired me to become a better football player. You’d think it would have been the other way around, right? But no, man, it was my little brother that made me take football to the next level.
Back then, my high school football coach made calls to Liberty and even brought me up for a visit. It was basically an eight-hour drive out of his way to help make my dream a reality. I mean, how many coaches do that for their athletes? People like him believing in me always meant the world to me. I just wanted to show I wasn’t some dyslexic kid without a future. I wanted to show the things inside of me the doubters couldn’t see. And that mentality hasn’t changed since I arrived on campus.
ONE LAST RIDE I can’t believe I’m closer now to the end than the beginning. It’s like I went to sleep a freshman one day and woke up a senior. Even though the journey isn’t over, I’m so proud of what this team has already accomplished. We never give up and always believe in one another. It’s truly one unbelievable experience. We focus on what we can control and don’t let things we can’t consume our minds. That’s a mentality I developed years ago when people were still telling me what I could and couldn’t do. By even being here, I’m living proof that you can do anything you set your mind out to achieve. Proving my coaches right was more important than proving my doubters wrong. And while I may not be the smartest guy in the classroom or the most talented player on the football field, I know now that I’m where I was always supposed to be. I’m exactly where I belong. Provided by FanWord.com
A GENERATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT That inspiration from my brother pushed me towards the sort of hopes and dreams that might have never been possible if I had chosen a different path. No one in my family had ever gone to college before.

PROVIDING RIGOROUS ACADEMICS WITH A BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW
EQUIPPING STUDENTS
Since 1971, Liberty University has become one of the world’s largest Christian universities and has produced 250,000 alumni impacting their fields around the globe. Today, Liberty remains committed to investing in the lives of students, helping them realize their full potential, and bringing glory to God. Liberty holds regional accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)* to award associate, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees. In addition to regional accreditation, many programs at Liberty have earned further accreditation through industry-specific organizations. These accrediting bodies maintain rigorous standards and only recognize educational programs that represent the highest levels of excellence in their specializations.
COMMITMENT TO CHRISTIAN VALUES
Liberty’s unique character derives from its roots in the fundamentals of the Christian faith, as well as an abiding respect for this nation’s founding principles of limited government, individual liberty, and free enterprise. Our faculty members integrate biblical truth into every discipline while fostering a learning environment in which students are encouraged to excel. Liberty remains on the cutting edge of higher education, providing rigorous academics without compromising its commitment to Christian values.
In addition to outstanding residential programs, Liberty is a leader in online education. *Contact the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Ga. 30033-4097 or call (404) 679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of Liberty University. Normal inquiries about the institution, such as admission requirements, financial aid, educational programs, etc., should be addressed directly to Liberty University.

2019 FBC MORTGAGE CURE BOWL
2019 FBC MORTGAGE CURE BOWL
In a season that saw the offense grab most of the attention with its prolific numbers, it was the Liberty defense that showed up in its biggest game. A stout defensive effort led Liberty to a 23-16 win over Georgia Southern in the 2019 FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl. With the win, the Flames capped off the most memorable year in program history with an 8-5 record. Liberty completed its FBS reclassification process in August 2019, received its first-ever bowl game invitation on Dec. 8, and walked away from Exploria Stadium with a bowl game trophy in hand. With the victory, the Flames became the third FBS transitioning team in NCAA history to win a bowl game during their first season at the FBS level. Georgia Southern came into the game ranked No. 8 in the country in rushing offense, averaging 261.5 yards per game. Liberty came into the game ranked No. 100 in the nation in rushing defense, surrendering 192.7 yards per game on the ground. Liberty’s defensive effort held Georgia Southern to 154 rushing yards, a single rushing touchdown, and three field goals in the victory. On the day, the Flames outgained the Eagles in total offense (402 to 249).
Flames defensive end Jessie Lemonier was named the 2019 Cure Bowl MVP, finishing the game with eight tackles, including two sacks. Lemonier ended his two-year career with the Flames ranked third in program history with 20.5 sacks. Liberty’s four-year starting quarterback Stephen Calvert finished the day completing 16-of-35 attempts for 270 yards and two touchdowns. He ended his career as the program’s all-time career leader in passing yards (12,025), completions (896), and touchdowns (93). Antonio Gandy-Golden finished his last game in a Liberty uniform with five receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown. Now a member of the Washington Football Team, GandyGolden completed his career as the program’s all-time leader in receptions (240), receiving yards (3,814), and touchdowns (33).

IAN MCCAW BIO IAN MCCAW
Ian McCaw has a vision for Liberty Athletics, and he has worked quickly to make that vision a reality since being named the department’s 11th director of athletics on Nov. 28, 2016. His vision is for Liberty’s intercollegiate athletics program to Train Champions for Christ, provide a world-class student-athlete experience, and achieve victory with integrity. McCaw has lived out this mission, guiding Liberty Athletics to unparalleled success on the field, in the classroom, and in the local community in a short time on Liberty Mountain. Heading into the 2020-21 athletics season, Liberty’s teams have captured 26 total conference titles since McCaw’s arrival on Liberty Mountain. The Flames Football program won it’s first-ever bowl game, men’s basketball captured it’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, and Liberty studentathletes have posted department record numbers in GPA and graduation success rate.
During Liberty’s final two seasons as a member of the Big South Conference, McCaw guided Liberty Athletics to its 13th and 14th Sasser Cup titles in 2017 and 2018, an annual award given to the top athletics program in the conference. McCaw also helped pave the way for the future of Liberty Athletics on May 17, 2018, when it was announced that 17 of the 20 NCAA Division I programs would end a 27-year run in the Big South Conference to join the ASUN Conference for the 2018-19 athletics season. Under McCaw’s leadership, Liberty Athletics wasted little time making an impact in the ASUN Conference. During its inaugural season as a conference member, Liberty’s Athletics programs captured seven ASUN championship titles, including men’s basketball (regular season and tournament), baseball (tournament), women’s tennis (regular season), men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field. Additionally, Liberty Athletics was awarded the Bill Bibb Trophy, which is presented to the ASUN Conference institution with the top overall athletics program. Liberty was also presented with the ASUN Conference’s Jesse Fletcher (Men’s All-Sports) and Sherman Day (Women’s All-Sports) Trophies. This marked the third time in conference history a member institution has swept all three honors and the first time since FGCU did so in 2012-13.
Less than three months into his time at the head of the Athletics Department, McCaw helped launch Liberty to the top level of intercollegiate competition. On Feb. 16, 2017, Liberty received notification that the NCAA had approved its request to enter into a two-year Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) reclassification process. McCaw led Liberty during its final season as a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) independent in 2017 and guided the Flames into their first season at the FBS level in 2018 — fulfilling the vision of university founder, Dr. Jerry Falwell, for Liberty’s Athletics programs to compete at the highest level of NCAA competition.

A winning tradition at the highest level of NCAA collegiate football was brought to Liberty Mountain when Hugh Freeze was introduced as the ninth head coach in football program history on Dec. 7, 2018. It did not take long for Freeze to live up to this lofty standard as he led the Flames to their firstever bowl game appearance and victory during his inaugural season at the helm of the program. The Flames capped their first season under Freeze with a 23-16 victory over Sun Belt Conference member Georgia Southern in the 2019 FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl on Dec. 21 at Exploria Stadium in Orlando. HUGH FREEZE BIO record 12,025 career passing yards, 93 career touchdowns, and 896 career competitions. As a team, Liberty finished the 2019 season ranked No. 21 in the country in passing offense (288.9 yards per game) and No. 32 in total offense (439.4 yards per game). Liberty posted an 8-5 record, the most wins for a Flames football team since 2014. When hired at Liberty on Dec. 7, 2018, Freeze brought over 25 years of continued coaching success, including head coaching experience that has led to conference titles, nationally ranked recruiting classes, and bowl appearances at multiple stops. Prior to his current coaching position at Liberty, the native of Oxford, Miss., returned to his hometown school and led it back to championship form during his five seasons as head coach at Ole Miss (2012-16). Freeze guided Ole Miss to bowl games during three of his five years with the Rebels, including victories in the Music City Bowl (2013) and the Sugar Bowl (2015). Freeze’s time in Oxford was highlighted by a 10-3 campaign in 2015, the program’s first 10-win season since 2003. The Rebels won their first four games of the 2015 season, including a 43-37 road victory over No. 2 Alabama, Ole Miss’ first win in Tuscaloosa, Ala., since 1988. Alabama went on to claim the national title, finishing the season with a 14-1 overall record. The Crimson Tide’s loss to Ole Miss marked the third time in program history that the Rebels were the national champion’s only loss during their championship season. The 2015 campaign also included a thrilling 38-27 win over No. 21 Mississippi State in its rivalry “Egg Bowl” game with the Bulldogs and a 48-20 win over No. 16 Oklahoma State in a New Year’s Sugar Bowl contest. Ole Miss was ranked as high as No. 3 in the national polls in both 2014 and 2015 and finished top 10 in the country for the first time since 1969 after the Sugar Bowl win (No. 9 in the coaches poll and No. 10 in the Associated Press poll). Ole Miss was a mainstay in the national polls during Freeze’s tenure, including top 25 rankings for 45 weeks over his five-year coaching stay and a string of 27-straight weeks in the polls for the first time since 1957-62.
In 2013, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) awarded Freeze the Grant Teaff Coach of the Year award. Freeze has been heavily involved with FCA during his entire coaching career and has been featured in the FCA Magazine and spoken at FCA functions. Freeze was also a finalist for the 2014 Bear Bryant Award and the 2014 Dobb Trophy. The Bear Bryant Award is given annually to the top NCAA National Coach of the Year, while the Dobb Trophy honors the head coach whose team excels on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. Freeze has an eye for the nation’s most talented high school players, collecting four nationally ranked recruiting classes at Ole Miss. In 2013 and 2016, his recruiting classes ranked in the top five nationally, making them the best in program history. Freeze and his staff developed 20 players who earned All-SEC honors, including All-Americans Cody Prewitt, Senquez Golson, Robert Nkemdiche, Laremy Tunsil, Evan Engram, Laquon Treadwell, and Trae Elston. Treadwell was named Ole Miss’ first ever SEC Freshman of the Year in 2013 and became the school’s first Biletnikoff Award finalist in 2015. Nkemdiche was the first defensive lineman to be named a Hornung Award finalist. Engram won the Ozzie Newsome Award and Pop Warner College Football Award following the 2016 season. Eleven Ole Miss players were selected in the NFL Draft during Freeze’s time as head coach, including first-rounder Engram as well as D.J. Jones, Derrick Jones, and Chad Kelly hearing their names called in the latest draft. In 2016, the Rebels had three first-round draft picks in Tunsil, Treadwell, and Nkemdiche. Donte Moncrief, Senquez Golson, Fahn Cooper, and Cody Core were also drafted over the last four years. Before returning to Oxford, the former Ole Miss assistant experienced a record-setting run at Arkansas State. With Freeze as head coach in 2011, the Red Wolves captured the Sun Belt Conference championship and became just the third school in Sun Belt history to finish undefeated in league play with a perfect 8-0 mark. The 10-2 overall record marked the program’s first 10-win

HUGH FREEZE BIO season since 1986, when ASU was a member of the I-AA Southland Conference. In the best debut season ever by an A-State head coach, Freeze became just the 14th FBS first-year head coach to win 10 regular season games. He also returned ASU to a bowl game for the first time since 2005. Freeze was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year, while 13 of his pupils earned all-conference honors. Freeze’s first season in Jonesboro saw him serve as Arkansas State’s offensive coordinator, guiding the Red Wolves’ offense to a record-breaking year in 2010. ASU, ranked No. 42 in the nation in scoring offense, finished the season averaging 30 points a game and recorded at least 20 points in 11 consecutive games for the first time in school history. Freeze’s offense scored 46 touchdowns for the fourth-most in school history and the most since the 1975 season. Prior to his arrival at Arkansas State, Freeze compiled a 20-5 record over the 2008 and 2009 seasons at the helm of the Lambuth University football program in Jackson, Tenn. Freeze was named the American Football Coaches Association’s Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Eagles to their best regular season in school history with an 11-0 record.
Among his talented pupils during that period were eventual Rebels and former NFL starters Michael Oher and Greg Hardy. Before assuming the role of head coach at Briarcrest, Freeze served as the teams’ offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 1992-94, as the Saints reached the TSSAA state semifinals twice. A 1988 graduate of Senatobia High School, Freeze received an associate degree from Northwest Mississippi Community College in 1990 and was a two-year letterwinner on the Ranger baseball team. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in coaching and sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992. It was while attending USM that he became active in mission projects, serving as a missionary in Houston, Salt Lake City, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Australia. Freeze also served as the state president for the Mississippi Baptist Student Union. Born in Oxford and raised in Independence, Mississippi, Hugh and his wife, Jill, are the parents of three daughters: Ragan, Jordan, and Madison.
Prior to taking over as head coach at Lambuth, Freeze served on the Ole Miss staff from 2005-07, including the final two seasons as an assistant coach. Before going to Ole Miss, Freeze served 13 years at Briarcrest Christian School (Memphis, Tenn.) as a classroom teacher, coach, and administrator. He was the Saints’ head football coach from 1995 to 2004, running the nohuddle “spread system” for six years that led to six straight state championship games. Freeze compiled a 99-23 record while at Briarcrest, which included an undefeated season in 1996, and led the school to state championship titles in 2002 and 2004. Briarcrest won regional titles in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2002, and Freeze was named the Region 8-AA Coach of the Year five times and Associated Press Coach of the Year four times.

LIBERTY FOOTBALL CENTER ABOUT The Liberty Football Center (LFC) is a 65,455-square-foot facility located in the north end zone at Williams Stadium that was renovated and reopened in Spring 2020. Shortly after the completion of the 2018 football season, Liberty began the renovation project to expand its football operations center that originally opened in 2006 and was known as the Football Operations Center (FOC). The recently completed renovation project added 18,000 square feet to the three-story facility. The top floor of the newly renovated facility houses 17 offices, 10 position meeting rooms, and offensive and defensive meeting rooms, plus a 147-seat, theater-style team meeting room. The middle floor of the building, located on ground level, includes a new locker room with 122 lockers and an attached equipment room to better service Liberty’s football players.
64
This floor also houses a 13,000-square-foot player’s lounge, including a nutrition center, and can accommodate up to 130 people. The area also will be used as a recruiting area during home football games. A glass enclosed cardio workout room replaced the existing front entrance to the operations center, and the workout area overlooks the lower level. Rounding out the new amenities of this floor is a press room for weekly press conference and postgame interviews, plus a new training room. The sports medicine area also includes 11 treatment beds, an on-site x-ray room, and hydrotherapy pools. Closing out the facility is a state-of-theart weight room in the lower level of the operations center. The 16,000-square-foot workout space is furnished with the latest training equipment, allowing Liberty’s players to prepare themselves to excel at the highest level of college football.

INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY As part of the football program’s FBS reclassification process, Liberty opened its newest football facility during the summer of 2017 — the Liberty University Indoor Practice Facility. The facility is located northeast of the Football Operations Center and adjacent to Liberty’s AstroTurf practice field.

FLAMES SPIRIT AND TRADITION THE NICKNAME The Liberty University athletics teams have been nicknamed the Flames since 1974, when the student body chose the Flames over several other options. The decision was based upon the school’s motto, “Knowledge Aflame.” Liberty began in 1971 as Lynchburg Baptist College with green and gold as the school’s colors. In 1976, the name was adjusted to Liberty Baptist College, and the colors were changed to red, white, and blue. The school once again changed its name in 1985 to Liberty University. However, throughout the shifts, “Flames” remained the nickname for Liberty’s athletics teams. In 1980, the eagle was designated as the Flames’ new mascot because of the patriotic symbolism and connection with the school name. It was designed with the Flames’ nickname in mind. Thus, a flaming torch clutched in the eagle’s left talon was included in the original mascot renderings.

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE YEAR IN REVIEW Before the athletic year was halted prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, five Liberty teams had captured conference championships. Men’s basketball (regular season and tournament), women’s basketball (tournament co-champion), men’s indoor track & field, and women’s indoor track & field each earned ASUN Conference championships. Meanwhile, women’s swimming & diving won back-to-back Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) crowns. Football also made history with its first-ever bowl game victory. The Flames topped Georgia Southern 23-16 to win the 2019 Cure Bowl.
FOOTBALL
The Flames became just the third team ever to win a bowl game during their first season of bowl eligibility after moving up from FCS to FBS. Liberty finished 8-5, recording its most wins in a season since 2014. The Flames’ impressive season also featured a victory over Bahamas Bowl champion Buffalo. All-American wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden was a fourth-round pick of the Washington Football Team in the 2020 NFL Draft.
VOLLEYBALL
FIELD HOCKEY
The Lady Flames finished a 10-8 season with a No. 19 national ranking. For the first time, two Liberty players (Jill Bolton and Ashley Dykema) earned All-America honors in the same season.
CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK & FIELD
The Flames swept the men’s and women’s team titles at the ASUN Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Liberty Indoor Track & Field Complex. Immediately after the meet, Brant Tolsma announced his retirement after 34 years coaching at Liberty. He finished his career with the Flames with 116 conference titles and 77 conference coach of the year awards. In cross country, Liberty finished as the men’s and women’s ASUN runners-up for the second year in a row.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Liberty won a school-record 30 games, tying for the second most victories in Division I for the 2019-20 season. For the second consecutive season, the Flames shared the ASUN regular-season title and cut down the nets as tournament champions. Liberty topped Lipscomb in the ASUN Championship title game, the final contest played at the Vines Center.
Liberty went 21-12, capped off by the first two postseason victories in program history. The Lady Flames won a pair of National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) matches to reach the tournament’s quarterfinal round. Liberty was 11-5 in conference play, setting a program standard for ASUN victories in a season.
MEN’S SOCCER
Midfielder Ruben Garcia became the Flames’ first CoSIDA Academic All-American since 2011 with his selection to the second team. The senior was also the program’s first ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year selection.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Liberty’s 10-7-2 record featured its first-ever win over an ACC opponent (Pitt). The Lady Flames yielded zero goals in regulation during ASUN Conference play and were the only ASUN team to defeat conference champion Lipscomb.
87
ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The 20-11 Lady Flames finished the season with an eight-game winning streak, reaching the ASUN Championship title game for the second year in a row. When the championship game was canceled, Liberty and FGCU were named ASUN co-champions.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Liberty successfully repeated as CCSA champion for the first time in program history, winning a program-record 14 CCSA events. Payton Keiner was named a CSCAA All-American when the 2020 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships were canceled, becoming the third All-American in program history.
BASEBALL
The Flames’ 10-7 record included series wins over Seton Hall and Kent State. Noah Skirrow, Troy Britts, and Landon Riley combined for the fourth no-hitter in program history during a 6-4 home triumph over Marist.
SOFTBALL
Liberty topped No. 6 Michigan and No. 21 Ole Miss during its early-season gauntlet of a schedule. The Wolverines were tied for the highest-ranked opponent the Lady Flames have ever defeated. Liberty won its only four home games of the season and has now won 16 straight at Liberty Softball Stadium.
MEN’S TENNIS
The Flames’ 8-6 mark was headlined by the team’s first-ever triumphs over Penn State and Virginia Tech. Chase Burton set the program record for singles victories during the Penn State match, finishing the year with 77 career wins.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
The Lady Flames ended up 7-4 during their abbreviated season. Individually, Kalani Soli went 16-5, including a 9-0 mark at No. 1 singles in the spring. Soli also topped No. 20 Asuka Kawai of Illinois at the Oracle ITA Masters during the fall.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Liberty won all three of its matches at Liberty Lacrosse Field, extending its home winning streak to eight. The Lady Flames finished No. 2 nationally for caused turnovers per game (14.83), while Anna Keebler racked up 24 goals in just six contests.
MEN’S GOLF
Led by GCAA/Ping All-Americans Kieran Vincent and Jonathan Yaun, Liberty closed the 2020 season with a No. 32 national ranking. The Flames bookended their year with impressive team performances, opening with a victory at the Island Resort Intercollegiate and finishing with a runner-up effort at the General Hackler Championship.

LARRY BLAIR II
MEN’S BASKETBALL: 2004-07 Larry Blair II remains one of the most prolific scorers in program history and ranks second only to Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame inaugural class member Karl Hess. Blair finished his distinguished career on Liberty Mountain with 2,211 career points and is tied for the program’s all-time lead with Hess with 43 career 20-point games. Blair burst onto the scene as a freshman and was named the 2004 Big South Freshman of the Year. He led the Flames in scoring during the 2004 Big South Men’s Basketball Championship title game with 29 points, guiding the program to an NCAA Tournament berth for the second time in school history. The native of Charlotte, N.C. is the only player in program history to earn All-Big South honors all four years of his playing career (2004 – second team; 2005-06-07 – first team). He was also a two-time VaSID all-state selection and named to the 2007 CollegeInsider.com Preseason Mid-Major All-America team. Following his days in a Liberty uniform, Blair went on to play 11 seasons of professional basketball in Finland, France, Georgia, Hungary, Lebanon, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
HENRY ELLIOTT
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD: 1987-89 Henry Elliott made the most of his three-year career with the Flames after transferring to Liberty from Campbell following his freshman season. Elliott was a two-time All-American in different disciplines, first earning NCAA Division II AllAmerica honors in 1987 in the discus with a
fourth-place finish. Two years later, he became Liberty’s first-ever NCAA Division I Men’s AllAmerican with a seventh-place finish in the decathlon at the national championship in 1989. He also was the Penn Relays champion in the decathlon as a senior in 1989. Elliott helped cap Liberty’s dominance in the Mason-Dixon Conference during the program’s final days at the NCAA Division II level. Liberty captured the Mason-Dixon Conference Indoor Track Championship titles all three years he was a member of the team in 1987, 1988, and 1989, while securing Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Track Championship titles as a junior and senior in 1988 and 1989. The native of Spivey’s Corner, N.C., made the team’s 100-Point Club all three years of his career with the Flames and still ranks in the program’s top 10 of six different events more than three decades after graduation.
ANDREA [WILDRICK] HAMPSON
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD: 1999-02
Andrea [Wildrick] Hampson owns more NCAA Division I All-America honors than any other female student-athlete in the storied history of the Liberty Track & Field program. Hampson became the program’s first-ever female competitor to win All-America honors at the NCAA Division I level in 2000 with a ninth-place finish at the outdoor national championship in the pole vault. She also earned All-America honors in the same discipline in 2002 at the NCAA National Indoor Track Championship (tied for fourth place) and Outdoor Track Championship (second place). Since her graduation in 2002, no other Lady Flames track & field athlete has come within a foot of breaking her indoor and outdoor pole vaulting records. The native of Mechanicsville, Va., was a threetime member of Liberty’s 100-point club and joins fellow Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame honoree Heather (Sagan) Zealand as one of the program’s two female performers with a top two finish at a Division I national championship.

Jeff Mincey helped establish a standard of excellence for Liberty’s baseball program as a four-time team captain and member of the inaugural team in 1974. In just three short seasons, Mincey and his fellow teammates went from start-up program to reaching the 30-win mark for the first time in program history. Liberty posted a 31-10 record in 1976, finishing the season with a win over No. 17 ranked South Carolina. Mincey led the team that season with nine home runs, along with a .343 batting average and 21 RBI. Mincey was the first player in program history selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 21st round in 1976, but he elected to return to Liberty for his senior season. The native of Concord, Calif., returned to his alma mater in 1980 and served on staff as an assistant coach for eight seasons (1980-87). He was Liberty’s first-ever full-time assistant coach, helping the Flames transition from the NAIA level to becoming Liberty’s first program to play at the NCAA Division I level in 1984. While on staff, Mincey helped Liberty make three consecutive trips to the NAIA World Series (1981-83) and post the program’s first-ever 40-win season in 1983 (40-17).
MORGAN HOUT
FOOTBALL HEAD COACH: 1984-88 Morgan Hout was a pioneer and the visionary head coach that guided Liberty’s football program through the transition from the NCAA Division II ranks into the Division I era. Hout was at the helm of the football program from 1984-88, where he coached 11 All-
100
Americans. He also helped recruit 11 Liberty football players who went on to play in the NFL, including the two highest NFL Draft selections in football program history. Hout’s squads continually faced off against the toughest competition in the country. His 1984 team wrapped up the season with a 27-14 win over NAIA No. 1-ranked Carson-Newman, marking the first time in program history Liberty defeated the No. 1 ranked team in the country at any level. The native of Marietta, Ga., guided Liberty to an 8-3 record during the program’s first year at the NCAA I-AA level in 1988, and finished the year ranked No. 18 in the country. He was duly honored for his efforts when he was named the 1988 VaSID Coach of the Year and the Bobby Ross Coach of the Year.
SAMUEL JOHNSON
MEN’S SOCCER: 1984-86
Samuel Johnson is one of the most decorated players in men’s soccer history, joining fellow Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame selection Paul Annan as the program’s only other twotime All-American. Johnson was the second men’s soccer player to earn All-America honors, doing so at the NCAA Division II level in 1985 and 1986. He was also named to the Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association first team three times (1984-86) and was a two-time selection to the NSCAA South Atlantic All-Region squad (1985-86). As a defender, Johnson led the Flames in scoring during the 1985 campaign, netting 10 goals while adding two assists to tally 22 points as a junior. Liberty finished the 1985 season with a 14-2-3 record and advanced to the semifinals of the Virginia State Intercollegiate Tournament. Liberty’s 14 victories is tied for the program record for victories in a season. The Ghana native helped Liberty post 27 shutouts during his three seasons on the pitch with the Flames. Liberty recorded 12 shutouts in 1985, setting a new program record that has only been matched by the 2009 team. Liberty allowed 11 goals in 1985, the third fewest in a season in program history.

ROCK ROYER/MAC RIVERA AWARD ABOUT In 1974, the Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award was established to honor the graduating senior student-athlete at Liberty University who best exemplifies the character and drive epitomized in the lives of these great Christian men. Rock Royer was Liberty’s first football coach in 1973. Mac Rivera was a member of Liberty’s basketball team from 1972-74. Both Royer and Rivera died tragically at a young age. This award encompasses more than just athletic ability. It recognizes the graduating student-athlete who has maintained an exemplary testimony on the playing field, in the classroom, and among the student body. The 2020 recipient of this award was women’s swimming & diving standout Hannah Baker. A two-time team captain, Baker helped the Lady Flames capture back-to-back CCSA titles in 2019 and 2020. She swam on nine CCSA-champion relay teams and was a five-time CCSA individual podium finisher. Her 1:46.55 leadoff leg of Liberty’s CCSA and conference-meet record 7:10.73 800 free relay in 2018 remains a program record for 200 freestyle. Baker is the third swimmer all-time at Liberty to go 12-for-12 at CCSA Championships, qualifying for A Finals in all 12 individual events she entered at conference meets over

the last four years. She is the first swimmer in program history to earn top-three CCSA finishes in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free during her career. During her time at Liberty, the Lady Flames posted a 49-7 dual-meet record, the winningest four-year dual-meet record in program history. A native of Fairfax, Va., who maintained a 3.95 GPA, Baker graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She was named a 2018 CSCAA Scholar All-America honorable mention recipient. During her time at Liberty, she helped the swimming & diving team achieve national acclaim, as the team’s 3.79 GPA in Fall 2018 was the highest of any NCAA swimming & diving team in the nation. Outside of the pool and classroom, Baker has spent many hours helping with community service projects. During her time at Liberty, she aided with the Dollar Makes a Difference campaign, Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat, Share the Warmth, Serve Lynchburg, R.S. Payne School Field Day, Human Kind 5K and Fun Run, Football Clean-up, Liberty Athletics Golf Outing, and Freedom 4/24 5K.

UNIVERSITY ARTICLE LIBERTY STUDENTS CONTINUE ANNUAL TRADITION OF PACKING OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOXES Continuing with a holiday tradition that has lasted on Liberty University’s campus for over two decades, students packed nearly 500 shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, hygiene items, and personalized messages for children around the world as part of Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse. In contrast to previous years when residence halls and community groups would shop, assemble, and pack the shoeboxes themselves, this year’s system assigned each area of campus an item category to shop for and deliver to a station in the Montview Student Union, where volunteers from Liberty’s Operation Christmas Child club packed the boxes. “Liberty is a very missional place; we have things like Global Focus Week, LU Send, and LU Serve, and this is just another special way that Liberty students can be missional with their time,” club president Seth Welch said. “We as college students, particularly here at Liberty, want to do things that are bigger than ourselves. That’s really what the Gospel is, being a part of something bigger and making disciples across all nations, and with Operation Christmas Child Liberty students are able to do that.” Welch added that this year’s boxes will be sent to areas of the world that have been harder for Samaritan’s Purse to reach in previous years.
Samaritan’s Purse and its president, Franklin Graham, have a longstanding relationship with Liberty University, with Graham a consistent visitor to campus for Convocation and other events. He most recently spoke at the Sept. 16 Convocation. Since the start of Operation Christmas Child in 1993, over 100 million shoeboxes have been collected, and Liberty students have contributed to the cause on some scale every year. Liberty junior Blakely Logsdon, a club member, has seen the joy and impact that these boxes bring as a year-round Operation Christmas Child volunteer since the age of 14. In 2017, Logsdon joined a weeklong volunteer trip to Madagascar with other students from the United States, handing out roughly 2,000 boxes. Logsdon and her family have packed shoeboxes since she was 5 years old, and she said physically seeing the results of the work she and every other person who has packed a shoebox have done was overwhelming. “There’s nothing like standing in the middle of handing out the boxes and realizing that you had a hand in this amount of joy over the past however many years, and there were several times that I almost fell to my knees and cried because of how heavy the presence of God was out there,” Logsdon said. “(Operation Christmas Child) is a tangible opportunity for (anyone) to spread the Gospel without having to be out in Madagascar or anywhere else.”

2020-21
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PREVIEW “Unfinished business” will be a common theme for college basketball teams this year after many seasons were abruptly cut short in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Liberty women’s basketball team certainly fits that description. Less than 24 hours after recording a hard-fought overtime victory at North Alabama in the ASUN Championship semifinals, the Lady Flames saw their season come to a halt. The much-anticipated rematch with FGCU in the ASUN title game never materialized, and Head Coach Carey Green’s squad was left to wonder what might have been. The Lady Flames and Eagles were later named ASUN co-champions, but Liberty enters its third season of ASUN Conference membership in search of its first outright league title. Liberty, which won its last eight games of the 2019-20 campaign to finish 20-11, has been picked second to FGCU in the 2020-21 ASUN preseason poll. As he enters his 22nd season at Liberty just 24 wins shy of 500, Green returns a veteran-laden squad headlined by the senior trio of Ashtyn Baker, Emily Lytle, and Bridgette Rettstatt. Baker and Lytle made the Lady Flames the only team with multiple Preseason All-ASUN selections, while Rettstatt was a second team All-ASUN performer as a sophomore in 2018-19. Baker enjoyed a career season in 2019-20, posting the highest scoring average (11.2 ppg) by a Liberty point guard in 21 years and dishing out the most assists (117) by a Lady Flame in five seasons. She and Rettstatt are the lone holdovers who appeared in the Lady Flames’ 2018 NCAA Tournament game at Tennessee. Lytle was playing some of the best basketball of her career down the stretch in 2019-20. She scored a tournament-high 51 points in two ASUN Championship games, punctuated by the game-winning three-point play in overtime at North Alabama. The Lady Flames’ top returning scorer (11.6 ppg), Lytle has made the ASUN All-Tournament Team each of the past two years. Despite being limited by injury last season, Rettstatt posted 8.2 ppg and ranked second on the team with 7.0 rpg. Through three years, she already ranks No. 28 in program history with 509 career rebounds.
Speaking of rebounding, junior post player Mya Berkman (formerly McMillian) was arguably the Lady Flames’ most improved player a season ago. Working with new assistant coach Katie Mattera, Berkman made notable jumps in scoring (2.2 to 6.2 ppg), rebounding (2.8 to 4.8 rpg), and field goal percentage (35.0 to 62.4) from her freshman to sophomore season. Sophomore guard Audrey Clark was another much improved player last season, quickly going from walk-on status to a regular in the starting lineup. She played 40 minutes during the ASUN semifinal triumph at North Alabama, contributing 14 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Flames averaged 69.0 ppg last season for their highest average in six years. They could rack up even more points this season after adding two of the nation’s top scorers among the junior college ranks. Dee Brown averaged 26.6 ppg at Miami Dade College a season ago, while fellow guard Alyssa Iverson posted 27.0 ppg at McHenry Community College. Talented wing Makaela Kestner is eligible to play this season after transferring from South Florida, while 6-5 Bella Smuda from Pennsylvania headlines the Lady Flames’ trio of freshmen. Add it all up and Green figures to have a deep roster during a unique season where depth may be more important than ever. After tipping off their 2020-21 season at Ohio this past Wednesday, the Lady Flames will host Norfolk State Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the first-ever contest at Liberty Arena. That will mark the first of Liberty’s 12 regular-season contests scheduled to be played inside its sparkling new home. by Paul Carmany Liberty Athletics Communications Ashtyn Baker
2020-21
MEN’S BASKETBALL PREVIEW The Flames have some unfinished business entering the 2020-21 season, after earning a second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Flames won a schoolrecord 30 games before having their season cut short due to COVID-19 in 2019-20. Liberty will look to build upon the past two seasons when it begins its 2020-21 season on Nov. 25 against Purdue. Liberty finished their first two seasons in the ASUN Conference with a pair of ASUN Championships and are picked to finish their third season in second place in the 2020-21 ASUN men’s basketball preseason coaches and media polls. In the both the coaches’ poll and the media poll Lipscomb was picked to finish first in the ASUN Conference Senior forward Elijah Cuffee was selected as the ASUN Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and also garnered Preseason ASUN-All-Conference team honors. Fellow returner Darius McGhee joined Cuffee on the Preseason ASUN All-Conference Team. The guard was one of six unanimous selections to this year’s allconference team. Reigning ASUN Coach of the Year Ritchie McKay, in his sixth season at Liberty, returns nine letter winners from last season’s Flames squad, led by returning starters Cuffee and McGhee. The Flames also add freshmen Miciaiah Abii, Drake Dobbs, Jonathan Jackson, and Isiah Warfield, considered to be one of its most talented recruiting classes in program history. In addition, graduate transfer Chris Parker joins the Liberty roster. Parker was a two-time Great American Conference (GAC) All-Conference selection at Henderson State and was named the 2020 GAC Tournament MVP after leading the Reddies to the conference title. Cuffee is the first player in program history to earn a Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honor. Last season, the senior led a Flames defense that ranked No. 2 in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 53.7 points per game. The Poca, W.Va. native spearheaded a defense that held opponents under 50 points in 14 contests last season.
Cuffee averaged 31.2 minutes per game and finished second on the team with 21 blocks in 2019-20. The swingman returns as the Flames’ second leading scorer from last season’s squad (7.0/game) and scored a game-high 16 points in Liberty’s 73-57 victory over Lipscomb in the 2020 ASUN Championship game. He is the only player in program history to play in a conference championship game in every season he has worn a Liberty uniform. He has been a part of 81 wins, the most in a player’s first three years in school history. Liberty’s other returning starter, McGhee, comes off a stellar sophomore campaign. The guard finished the year by being named to the ASUN All-Tournament Team after averaging 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game during Liberty’s run to the 2020 ASUN title. The native of Roxboro, N.C. started all 34 contests and averaged 32.9 minutes per game, the most of any Flames returner, last season. McGhee scored in double-figures in seven ASUN contests last season and enters the year shooting 41 percent from the field and 85.5 percent from the free throw line for his career. During his first two seasons at Liberty, McGhee has netted 602 points, an 8.6 points per game average, and scored in double-digits in 29 contests. Liberty enters the year off an impressive twoyear run. The Flames have won 59 games, the second-most in the nation during the span. Since McKay returned to Liberty in 2015, Liberty has won 115 games over five seasons, only second in the Commonwealth of Virginia behind the Virginia Cavaliers (141 wins). by Steven Gonzalez Liberty Athletics Communications Elijah Cuffee
