Famous

CARTOON CREATOR displays work at Liberty University

Cartoon creator Butch Hartman visited Liberty University to launch an eye-popping exhibition of his illustrations and speak about his life, career, and spiritual experiences. He is best known for spawning Nickelodeon’s “The Fairly OddParents,” “Danny Phantom,” and “T.U.F.F. Puppy.”

Prior to Hartman’s time with Nickelodeon, he had stints with Marvel Productions, Ruby Spears Productions, and Hanna-Barbera, where he wrote and directed episodes of “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Cow and Chicken,” and “Johnny Bravo.”

“To have a creative of Butch Hartman’s stature exhibit his work in the Liberty University Art Gallery is a real honor,” said Todd Smith, chair of the Department of Studio & Digital Arts. “Hartman

has helped shape culture for many years through innovative approaches to his craft. Many students who visited the exhibit grew up watching his shows and enjoyed meeting him in person. We are excited that students heard his firsthand account of what is involved in the field of animation.”

COMPETITION Liberty students’ skill has been recognized through the American Advertising Awards (ADDY), national and international photography competitions, and the international Adobe competition.

In the 2017 Photographer’s Forum Best of High School and College Photography, one Liberty student received an honorable mention, and seven students finished as finalists.

“We’re very proud of our students and the excellence their work exhibits in the industry,” said Todd Smith, SADA chair. “These accomplishments reflect the role the SADA faculty play in mentoring our students, who reap the benefit of working with professors with years of ‘real world’ experience.”

Students benefit from a variety of other opportunities to have their work reviewed and to participate in juried shows.

In the broadest terms, the difference between a graphic designer and a studio artist is how they create. A graphic designer works in the digital realm, and the studio artist creates in the analog, where material is manipulated by hand. However, there are also similarities between the two.

STUDIO ART

Graphic design spans a broad spectrum of creative careers. Designers can work on everything from magazines to logos, vector illustrations to book covers, web design to 3-D graphics, animation to product design, and more.

Studio art spans an equally wide range of career paths. These artists can be painters, printmakers, illustrators, ceramicists, sculptors, photographers, book artists, and other professionals involved in analog creating.

Over time these designations have become less defined.

Individuals with studio art backgrounds may find themselves in the digital realm working in a field such as animation, character design, or photo editing.

An in-depth knowledge of studio art processes and techniques makes these artists invaluable assets in the digital realm. Likewise, successful graphic designers who have knowledge of studio art may find themselves illustrating books, screen printing patterns on textiles, or hand-lettering advertisements.

Many studio art students add a teacher licensure to their degree, enabling them to teach in grades K-12.

As they work through the program, they interact with the graphic design realm by digitally scanning their work and printing with a 3-D printer, creating digital paintings using a tablet, and scanning and manipulating their drawings.

At Liberty, we recognize that a changing industry requires a flexible approach to education.

STUDIO ART students at Liberty focus their studies on drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture.

GRAPHIC DESIGN majors begin with a foundation in drawing before being introduced to industrystandard software. They spend the remainder of their studies learning how to integrate those programs into the creative workflow through coursework that emulates real-world scenarios. Design students may use their studio art backgrounds to draw logos, develop illustrations, or create hand-lettered pieces.

Get Involved

STUDENT ART CLUBS AIGA A professional association for designers, AIGA at Liberty works to advance graphic design as a professional craft, a strategic tool, and vital cultural force by providing students with information, inspiration, validation, and representation.

STUDIO CREATIVE COMMUNITY This club reaches out to art and graphic design students on Liberty’s campus, other college campuses, and the community through artistic production, trips, exhibits, community services, interaction with professionals, and guest lectures.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Photography Club offers workshops, hosts guest speakers, and encourages students to improve their skills through group photo walks. Club members believe their work should reflect their Christian worldview.

ZETA CHI

International Honorary Art Fraternity Zeta Chi challenges its member to raise the standards of artistic work. Students are chosen for membership based on their efforts and meritorious work.

HUB The Liberty University Art Gallery offers students, faculty, and visitors the opportunity to experience the beauty and essence of art.

The gallery hosts nine exhibits annually, featuring some of the nation’s most talented artists, as well as student and faculty work. Gallery exhibitions give students the opportunity to interact with professional artists through classroom presentations and demonstrations, lectures, gallery discussions, and one-on-one engagement.

The gallery is home to Liberty’s Permanent Collection. This collection serves as a teaching tool for the Department of Studio & Digital Arts. In addition to paintings donated by gallery benefactors, the university also purchases pieces to use specifically for instruction.

BS or BFA Making the right choice BACHELOR OF SCIENCE

The Bachelor of Science degree programs take a general approach to the study of art and design.

The 45-hour degree program prepares students to analyze visual imagery in relation to history and culture and articulate the meaning of that imagery. Students may choose to study studio art or graphic design.

HANNAH LYNCH MFA STUDENT

BS in Graphic Design BS in Graphic Design students learn the principles and techniques of visual communication and are taught how to use them in the workplace. Students gain strong technical skills and learn production technology.

BS in Studio Art In the studio art program, students refine their creativity as a visual artist, painter, sculptor, and more. As students develop their skills, they also gain an understanding of the language, aesthetics, and cultural impact of visual communication.

Students can also earn teacher licensure with the studio art concentration.

Teacher Licensure Adding a teacher licensure to the studio art degree prepares students for a career in art education in grades K-12.

BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS

A Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is considered the premier preprofessional degree in the arts.

The BFA programs allow students to focus their studies in either graphic design or studio art.

Students interested in the BFA must submit a portfolio and be accepted into the program.

BFA in Graphic Design The BFA in Graphic Design provides a more intensive study of art as communication. It also requires more art history courses as well as advanced drawing and design classes.

BFA in Studio Art The BFA in Studio Art refines students’ artistic abilities as they learn to use their art to influence culture. The degree program requires more art history courses and offers three practicums to allow students to specialize in their chosen art form.

In all SADA programs, the integration of a Christian worldview helps students think critically as they seek to reflect God’s creativity in their work.

MFA DEGREE POSITIONS STUDENTS TOP-TIER careers

Hannah Lynch has big dreams for her career. To get there, she knew she needed a university that would challenge her in her craft and encourage her creative expression.

“The Master of Fine Arts program at Liberty University has grown me as an artist in ways I never imagined possible,” said Lynch, who is specializing in graphic design.

When she graduates with her Liberty MFA, Lynch can look forward to a wide world of opportunity.

Liberty’s master’s-level program in studio and digital arts prepares professionals to succeed at the pinnacle of their field, whether they desire to be a creative director, art gallery director, or university professor.

As the terminal degree for the arts, the MFA helps creative professionals perfect their craft while providing advanced training in the theory and meaning of visual imagery. The integration of a Christian worldview in coursework helps students think critically as they seek to reflect God’s creativity in their work.

“SADA provides numerous opportunities for graduate students to develop professionally — courses, seminars, internships, exhibits, visiting artists, and real-world learning experiences, just to name a few,” Todd Smith, SADA chair said. “Our goal is to further enhance their overall preparedness for the field of art and design, much like what would be available from other schools.

In addition, and what makes a Liberty University MFA distinct, is the goal of sending graduates into the field, whether as professors or in the industry, to be salt and light and to reflect God’s creativity.”

SPACES At Liberty, classrooms in the Department of Studio & Digital Arts are arranged to allow for maximum student creativity. Labs contain not only up-to-date computing equipment and software, but also open-table and critiquing space — all of which allow for better student interaction and discussion.

Students frequently comment that freeing them from computer terminals fosters an atmosphere of creativity, which is one of the most important aspects of their learning experience at Liberty.

LIFE OF CHRIST PAINTINGS Students can find inspiration from the works of Robert Wilson on display in the Montview Student Union, Alumni Ballroom. The 21-piece, oil-on-canvas collection was donated to the Liberty University Art Gallery in 2016.

CERAMICS LAB This lab offers students 20 wheels to practice their skills of throwing vessels of all sizes and shapes. Two large kilns are available for firing and glazing work. Storage space for student work is provided.

PHOTOGRAPHY LAB

SCULPTURE LAB This lab has equipment for a variety of 3-D processes, including wood, clay, metal, and more. Storage space for student work is provided.

The Photography Lab features studio lighting and a space for product, portrait, and conceptual photography. The lab also has a dark room for processing and 12 enlargers to make up to 16”x20” silver prints. Storage space is available for student work.

3-D INNOVATION LAB The 3-D Innovation Lab features technology for 3-D body scanning as well as medium-tolarge format scanning. 3-D printing equipment includes Makerbot printers and FormLabs Resin Printers.

Students also have the opportunity to create using virtual reality.

Professor Edward Edman

Anyone who has ever used Arial or Times New Roman on their computer has SADA Professor Edward Edman to thank. He was a major part of the team that digitized some of today’s popular TrueType typefaces. Like Edman, all of Liberty’s SADA faculty are practicing artists.

Their work can be seen in everything from magazines to clothing and phone cases and has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution and Oxford University, as well as national and international juried art shows.

Eva Palmer, associate professor and sculptor, was part of a six-member team from Liberty that discovered evidence of where the Dead Sea Scrolls were stored.

The discovery was the first in 60 years related to the Dead Seas Scrolls. “We were so excited to hear that they had found shards of the storage pots,” she said. “This is actual evidence of the Bible and what we believe.”

SADA alumni are working around the world in a variety of fields. The film, video gaming, and publishing industries pour billions of dollars into hiring artists annually. No modern form of entertainment could be created without studio artists and graphic designers.

While some alumni work in the entertainment industry, others have found success in nonprofit organizations.

One graduate recently helped design a presentation to assist an agency helping victims of human trafficking.

SADA partners with

ADOBE Adobe products have been an important tool in the education of Liberty students, and partnerships with the company have helped to elevate that experience.

Last fall, Liberty was one of just five institutions of higher education to be hand-picked by Adobe to partner with the company in its efforts to learn how to better tailor its products for the classroom. Liberty was selected for a number of reasons, including its centrally managed technology, its cutting-edge approach to education, its quick adaptation in terms of growth and innovation, and the university’s mix of online and residential students.

Through Liberty’s partnership with Adobe, the university is able to offer all residential students and students in select online courses access to Adobe’s large suite of products, which includes software for graphic design, desktop and website publishing, and photo and video editing, as well as a host of web apps.

Students studying English, social work, history, business, education, cinematic arts, studio and digital arts, and more are learning how to use Adobe tools to create professional presentations, network with classmates and professors, and build their résumés.

DISCIPLINES SADA students hone their skills not only with classroom work, but also by collaborating with departments across campus. Art students have painted backdrops for the theatre department and design students have helped create print ads for other schools and departments. These students often find their work on display in the Jerry Falwell Library and have partnered with LU Serve and World Help to collect more than 6,300 art supply items for children in Guatemala.
