T H E H I S T O R Y of THE NURSE PIN

The concept of the Nurse Pin began with the Crusades in the 12th century when care providers wore the Maltese Cross to easily identify them on the battlefield. Nursing adopted this practice recognizing the influence of Florence Nightingale on the emerging profession. By the 1920s, most nursing schools in the United States and in Europe adopted this practice, acknowledging the successful completion of nursing school as well as the student’s entrance into the profession of nursing.

The ceremony is an intimate event recognizing the importance of professionalism, the loyalty of nurses toward their patients and communities, and the joyful transition into the fine art of nursing. At Liberty University School of Nursing, students are pinned by faculty members who are registered nurses or nurse practitioners. Students wear uniforms for the last time, signifying their accomplishment of multiple requirements to complete the rigorous nursing program.

The long history of nursing is full of professionals driven by compassion for individuals and families. This is your art: compassion. But without research and evidencebased practice, nursing would not be successful at impacting healthcare. This is your science: research.

These two elements of nursing require you to use your heart and your mind. During your time at Liberty University School of Nursing (LUSON), you have learned to use both to influence patients’ outcomes and to meet the needs of this ever-changing profession.

As you graduate, you fully join what Florence Nightingale called “The Finest Art” — the Profession of Nursing. We are honored you chose to begin this journey with us at Liberty University.

With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, you are eligible to take the Registered Nurse License Exam.

Our program is designed to provide individuals with a broad educational background that builds on the Bible, liberal arts, and sciences. The School of Nursing is fully accredited by the Collegiate Commission of Nursing Education (CCNE) and is approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing.

Graduates of the program are employed in virtually every area of nursing, including acute care, community health, education administration, and the mission field.

THE FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE PLEDGE

I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty to my patients and my community will I endeavor diligently in my work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care, wherever I may serve.

Adapted from the original Nightingale Pledge. The Nightingale Pledge was composed by Lystra Gretter, an instructor of nursing at the Old Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, and was first used by its graduating class in the spring of 1893.

It is an adaptation of the Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians.
