The arrival of fall marks the beginning of the biggest beer festival on earth. Oktoberfest celebrations, despite the name, predominantly take place through September, ending on the first weekend of October.

Don’t fret over what it’s called. Instead, gather in Munich with your fellow liquid gold lovers and raise a glass to Germany’s beer pride.

The Early Bird Gets the Beer Don your best dirndl or lederhosen and make your way to the Weisn — an affectionate term meaning “the field” that the Münchner (locals) call the fairgrounds. If you didn’t make a prior reservation, it’s important to arrive early to get in line for the tent of your choice — don’t be surprised if you see people lining up as early as 6 a.m. The 14 beer-serving tents fill up fast, with each one hosting a different atmosphere; a few cater to families or couples, while others focus on the food, but the main tent, the Schottenhamel, welcomes all.

It’s What’s Inside that Really Counts Once you’ve braved the queue, make your way to a table. Sharing is caring in these tents, and you’re expected to share your spot with strangers. It’s frowned upon to try and claim a whole table to yourself, but this is the perfect opportunity to make a Wiesenbekanntschaft — a unique local term for an “Oktoberfest acquaintance.” Just be friendly and polite, and always ask if the seat is taken before sitting down.

5 Caribbean Bites That’ll Put a Tropical Twist on Your Thanksgiving Meal The turkey, the stuffing, all the trimmings — after a while, it can just get to be too much. Have yourself a gleeful little Thanksgiving away from home and invite your entire crew. We have five Caribbean bites that will not only spice up your meal but also give you a true taste of island life.

1. Conch Fritters, The Bahamas These bite-sized, golden-fried balls of greatness are absolute bliss on the tongue and a Bahamian staple. Don’t let the word “snail” turn you off. Conch has the texture of clams or mussels with a fresh sweetness that’s heaven from the sea. For the fritters, the conch meat is finely chopped and mixed with bell peppers, onion, cayenne, and garlic, then fried to perfection. Dip the fritters in a side of spicy lime aioli — also known as Calypso Dipping Sauce — and get ready to be blown away by that bold Bahamian flavor.

2. Kalua Pig, Hawaii The islands of Hawaii are a fully-stocked pantry of tropical and international delicacies. For traditional Hawaiian fare, just head to a luau on any of Hawaii’s islands, and you’re sure to find a buffet filled with fresh pineapple, aromatic poke (the Hawaiian version of raw fish ceviche), and a purple dish called poi. But the guest of honor at all luaus is Kalua Pig, and for Hawaiians, you either cook it right or not at all. The fully intact pig is slowly roasted for hours in an underground oven known as an imu. In the end, this time-consuming process is totally worth it, and the reward is pull-off-the-bone, melt-in-your-mouth pork meat with a smoky flavor that you’re sure to pig out on.

3. Jerk, Jamaica You’ll notice we left the word “chicken” off the end of this dish, but there’s a method to our madness. The term “jerk” refers to the unique style of cooking and spice blend featuring Scotch Bonnet peppers, allspice, and nutmeg, which all grow in abundance on Jamaica. And while the fowl variety tends to be a favorite for us mainlanders, Jamaicans use this technique on pork, beef, fish, and even vegetables. You’ve probably seen or tasted a version of this spicy meal at eateries in the States, but those lucky enough to have sampled it straight from the source will tell you nothing beats the jerk dishes on the Island of All Right. What’s their secret? Jamaicans cook the jerk over coals mixed with fresh, green pieces of pimento wood from the allspice trees, giving it a flavor you just can’t replicate at home.

4. Mofongo, Puerto Rico Mofongo might sound silly — and look it, too — but it’s rich, savory flavor is no joke. It resembles a loaf of yellow-green mashed potatoes, but traditionally it’s made from smashed fried plantains that are then mixed with garlic, broth, and, on occasion, small pieces of pork or bacon. Mofongo can be served by itself, stuffed, or smothered with an array of meats ranging from chicken to crab. No matter how you prefer your mofongo, be sure to wash it down with another ingenious concoction hailing from Puerto Rico — the Piña Colada.

Habichuelas Con Dulce, the Dominican Republic From Spanish-influenced treats with a tropical twist, such as coconut flan, to decadent cakes filled with native fruits like guava, this island has a dessert to satisfy every sweet tooth. If you’re craving a sweet that has 100% Dominican roots, grab a big bowl of Habichuelas Con Dulce — or Sweet Cream of Beans. Wait, did we say beans? Yes, we did, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find they make an excellent dessert. Every household has their own style for this liquid treat, but all recipes cook puréed, soft-boiled kidney beans with coconut and evaporated milks, sugar, and cinnamon to create a creamy dessert. Some hopefuls wait until the fall or even December to book because they’re looking to score last-minute deals. They’ll be disappointed to find out these are almost nonexistent during that time of year. If you don’t book it now, someone else will.

Payment Plans Another benefit to booking early is the option to make payments. Save yourself some stress and put a deposit down on your trip when you book ahead of time. While almost all airlines still want you to pay for your ticket upfront, most hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators are flexible and allow you to book with a deposit. Your final payment usually isn’t due until about two months before your departure date, leaving you plenty of time to save or make payments on a monthly basis.

Many holiday cruises started selling out in January, and many of their 2018 cabins are already reserved as well. Remember, prices of flights and hotel rooms are always based on availability. As they start to book up, prices increase. Save yourself and your wallet by booking in advance for a better rate, and to get the room category, resort, and flight itinerary you desire.

Though Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party requires a special entrance ticket, the event is worth the extra cost. The party doesn’t start until 7 p.m., but you receive entry at 4 p.m. with your special ticket. Plus, the park is generally less busy during the party than it is during the daytime. Where can I go on a guided vacation?

In a word? Everywhere. In a few more words, escorted tours go pretty much anywhere. The US & Canada, Europe, Africa, Asia…like we said, everywhere.

Do I need a passport?

If your tour goes anywhere outside the USA you’ll need a passport. Remember, it’s always recommended to have at least six extra months’ validity on your documents.

What meals are included?

As with a lot of these answers, that typically depends on the tour. That said, you can usually expect breakfasts and dinners to be provided. You’ll normally get lunch on your own, which allows you to taste the regional delicacies.

How do I get from place to place on my guided vacation?

Most of the time you’ll be taking a bus or luxury van with others on the same vacation. When traveling farther distances, you might have to fly, or even take a boat or train. Best of all, your transportation is included with your tour.

Is there any free time?

Usually, yes. You’ll almost always have some time to explore, shop, and eat on your own depending on the tour style.

How many other people will I be with?

This one really depends on the guided vacation — groups can range from 8 people on small luxury outings to the much more common 50 or so on coach bus tours.

Are there guided vacations that don’t just go around cities?
