from provided sources to answer a question. SL.1.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. Approaches to Learning Displaying Curiosity, Collaboration, Communication of New Ideas
NEW! Matter in Motion 45 Minutes • Laboratory Workshop Online | At LSC | At Your School Matter can be solid, liquid, or gas. But matter can also change! Observe phenomena involving some of the ways matter can change. Work collaboratively to construct evidencebased arguments on whether or not changes to matter can be reversed.
Alignment to NJSLS - Science 2-PS1-4 Construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot. Connections to NJSLS - English Language Arts W.2.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section. Approaches to Learning Displaying Curiosity, Collaboration, Communication of New Ideas NEW! Voyage through the Sky
NEW! Super Strong Shapes 30-45 Minutes • Laboratory Workshop Online | At LSC | At Your School Which shapes are not only strong but… super strong? In a hands-on program that blends science and architecture, we’ll build and test our favorite three-dimensional shapes and explore how an object’s shape relates to its properties and uses.
Alignment to NJSLS - Science 2-PS1-2 Analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose. Connections to NJSLS - English Language Arts W.2.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. Connections to NJSLS - Mathematics MP.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MP.4 Model with mathematics. MP.5 Use appropriate tools strategically. Approaches to Learning Following Multi-Step Plans What’s the Matter? 30-45 Minutes • Laboratory Workshop Online | At LSC | At Your School Explore the world of chemistry with investigations that show how to classify materials by their observable properties. Learn to describe what happens when we cool matter using liquid nitrogen.
Alignment to NJSLS - Science 2-PS1-1 Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties. Persistence, Collaboration, Problem-Solving, 45 Minutes • Planetarium Program Online | At LSC Learn how to find the Big Dipper and the North Star in the evening sky. Hear stories about the stars. Take a tour of our nearest neighbor in space—the moon—then visit Saturn.
Alignment to NJSLS - Science 1-ESS1-1 Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be predicted. Connections to NJSLS - English Language Arts W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes 30-45 Minutes • Laboratory Workshop Online | At LSC | At Your School Our planet is constantly being shaped by events that can happen very slowly over time, or quite suddenly. Using a model to represent land, students will simulate how earthquakes, volcanoes, and erosion can change the shape of the land around us.
Alignment to NJSLS - Science 2-ESS1-1 Use information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur quickly or slowly. Connections to NJSLS - English Language Arts W.2.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. SL.2.2 Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media. Connection to NJSLS - Mathematics MP.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MP.4 Model with mathematics. Approaches to Learning Displaying Curiosity, Collaboration, Communication of New Ideas
Fast Change, Slow Change 30-45 Minutes Science On a Sphere Program At LSC The Science On a Sphere will be used to explore how Earth has changed over time as continents shift, separate, and collide. See what the planet looked like in the days of the dinosaurs. We’ll also use the big globe to examine ways in which the forces of wind, water, and ice have changed our planet gradually or suddenly.
