He has over 30 years of experience as a healthcare executive, entrepreneur and financial leader with experience in executive leadership, strategy, start-up operations, acquisitions and divestitures, and business turnarounds. Under his leadership, Horizon BCBSNJ is leading the transformation of health care in New Jersey through collaboration with physicians, hospitals and health systems to deliver innovative, patient-centered programs that reward the quality, not quantity, of care patients receive. Before joining Horizon BCBSNJ, he led Capital BlueCross as its President and CEO for nearly eight years, transforming the local health plan into a

He also serves on the board of directors of Ernest Health, a Pennsylvania-headquartered specialty health medical and rehab hospital company with facilities located throughout the west and midwest. In 2019, he was honored by the Central Pennsylvania JDRF for his community and philanthropic leadership, and together with his wife Sylvie, was recognized by their local United Way as Humanitarians of the Year. He and his wife are also the proud parents of six children. He graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in management advisory services from Southern New Hampshire University.

GENIUS GALA 2020 INNOVATION CHAIR Jennifer Chalsty was born in a small town east of Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1934. When war broke out, her father, a school teacher, enlisted in the South African army. The family moved frequently. She attended eight schools before graduating from high school. She attended the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg on a scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a teaching diploma.

She taught in Pretoria for two years and, with apartheid becoming increasingly intolerable, immigrated to Canada. She taught there for five months before entering the US in 1957. She and her husband became US citizens in 1960. She has two daughters, three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Her philanthropy is geared toward improving the lives and education of children.

PAUL HOFFMAN President and CEO, Liberty Science Center Paul Hoffman joined Liberty Science Center in 2011 as President and CEO. He has led the Center through three important renovations and expansions: the creation of the Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium, the largest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere; the addition of the Stevens Institute of Technology’s award-winning, energy-efficient SURE House; and the opening of the new Weston Family Art and Science Pavilion. A fourth expansion, Dino Dig Adventure, will be completed next spring. Hoffman is also the driving force behind SciTech Scity, LSC’s partnership with Jersey City to create a 30-acre innovation campus to launch and grow dozens of game-changing science and technology start-up companies and reimagine K-12 science education. Before COVID-19, LSC had the distinction under Hoffman’s leadership of becoming the fastestgrowing established museum in the United States, with total attendance increasing 65% in five years to over 750,000 visitors annually. During COVID-19 sheltering-in-place and LSC’s six-month closure to the public, the Center pivoted to become

the largest creator and provider of live virtual STEM programming to New Jersey students and teachers. LSC reopened to the public on the Labor Day weekend. As a journalist and biographer, Hoffman’s work explores the relationship between genius, madness, obsession, and creativity. He is the author of 11 books, most recently a memoir about the world of championship chess, King’s Gambit: A Son, a Father, and the World’s Most Dangerous Game . His previous book, Wings of Madness: Alberto Santos-Dumont and the Invention of Flight, was a finalist for The Los Angeles Times Book Prize and was the basis of a television documentary for Nova. Paul’s first biography, The Man Who Loved Only Numbers: The Story of Paul Erdös and the Search for Mathematical Truth , was an international bestseller; published in 16 languages, it received the Rhône-Poulenc prize for best science book of the year. He is the recipient of the first National Magazine Award for feature writing.

Hoffman has been a top media executive. He was the long-time president and editor in chief of Discover magazine, the president and publisher of Encyclopaedia Britannica, and, most recently, the editorial chairman of the video-interview website BigThink.com. A noted expert on the public understanding of science, Hoffman has advised NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard College.

As a child, Hoffman split his time between Manhattan’s West Village and Westport, CT. These days he lives in Brooklyn, where he co-owns two restaurants, San Pedro Inn and Rucola, and in the Catskills, in a 300-year-old converted barn, sometimes with his college-age son. Known for his long, exploratory walks around New York City and Jersey City, The New York Times called Hoffman “Mayor of Strange Places.” Chicago magazine called him “the smartest man in the world,” but he says they must have caught him on a particularly good day.

Hoffman has performed mathematical feats on Late Night with David Letterman and appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show for an entire show on the future of technology. He worked with the magician David Blaine to kick off a chess match between two Russian champions in the ABC Studios in Times Square, where he also served as the master of ceremonies for three highly publicized chess events. He was the color commentator for 17 hours of live chess on ESPN, the on-air science essayist for PBS NewsHour, and the host of the five-part PBS series Discovering the Great Minds of Science. He has played chess with Garry Kasparov and Judit Polgar, the strongest female player ever, and he was taken into custody in Libya when he tried to play chess with the late Muammar el-Qaddafi. He has edited the writing of Oliver Sacks, Jared Diamond, Sherwin Nuland and Nobel laureates Francis Crick, Steven Weinberg, and Leon Lederman. He has conducted long video interviews with Noam Chomsky, Richard Dawkins, Ray Kurzweil, Penn Jillette, Aubrey de Grey, Annie Duke, Michio Kaku, Anatoly Karpov, Arianna Huffington, Ed Koch, Jonathan Irving, Gay Talese, Jonathan Ames, and Nobel laureates James Watson and Orhan Pamuk. He moderated a debate on nature v. nurture between E.O. Wilson and the late Stephen Jay Gould. He has done stand-up storytelling at the Moth along with Nobel laureate Paul Nurse.

GENIUS AWARD HONOREE WILLIAM CONAN DAVIS Food Chemist Instant mashed potatoes, softer soft ice cream, and Dasani water Professor Emeritus, St. Philip’s College William C. Davis’s remarkable career as a researcher was set in motion when his father took him on a road trip from the family’s home in Valdosta, Georgia, to the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, more than 300 miles away. There, the young Davis attended a workshop with George Washington Carver and Henry Ford. Seeing African-American professors and scientists in action inspired Davis to become a research chemist. After he graduated from his Georgia high school, his parents sent him to New York City to live with his older brother, the actor and civil rights activist Ossie Davis, and prepare for college. He next completed a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at Talladega College in Alabama and returned to the Tuskegee Institute in 1956, where he received a Master of Science in organic chemistry. Davis was determined to pursue a PhD in research— an extremely difficult goal for a black student at the time. The University of Idaho was the only institution willing to accept him as a researchtrack grad student. In Idaho, he began studying the process of sloughing, the breakdown of plant materials, in potatoes. In the summer, he was hired at nearby Washington State University to study the build-

up of particles on saw blades in lumber mills, and isolated a sticky polysaccharide called arabinogalactan that was causing the problem. When Davis returned to his potato research, he found that adding arabinogalactan to his potato mixtures resulted in a fluffy, smooth compound— new, improved instant mashed potatoes. He later isolated a sugar that makes soft-serve ice cream smoother as well as a wood sugar now used in industrial glue to make compressed wood. The potato research was the focus of his doctoral thesis. PhD in hand, Davis began to explore human health, studying hay fever antigens, learning radioimmunoassay techniques, and spending nearly 15 years as director of United Medical Laboratories in Portland, Oregon. He helped establish a free medical clinic in Portland’s Albina neighborhood before relocating to San Antonio, Texas, where he became a chemistry professor at St. Philip’s College. There, working with colleague Lanier Byrd, he studied the characteristics of drinking water and co-created the formula for Dasani brand water. Upon his retirement in 2009, the science building at St. Philip’s College was named in Davis’s honor.

Governor Phil Murphy, as he says, “grew up in a family that was middle class on a good day,” the youngest of four children with only one parent who graduated high school. His upbringing—where religion, a strong work ethic, education, and civic awareness were pillars of family life—shaped his values, his priorities, and the leader he is today.

Since taking office, Governor Murphy has put a new emphasis on restoring the state’s dominance in the innovation economy by reinvesting in workforce development and supporting the growth of innovative and start-up companies. Under his leadership, New Jersey is also emerging as a leader in combating climate change through the deployment of offshore-wind energy technologies and banning offshore fossil-fuel exploration and drilling, among other measures to spur growth in the clean and renewable energy sectors.

Governor Murphy has made New Jersey a national leader in tackling gun violence, and has expanded protections for the state’s immigrant and LGBTQ communities, among others. Prior to taking office, he served proudly as New Jersey’s sole representative on the board of the NAACP, the world’s oldest civil rights organization, and as Finance Chair of the Democratic National Committee. In 2009, he answered President Obama’s call to service and, following his confirmation by the United States Senate, became the U.S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, where he served until 2013. Governor Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy live in Monmouth County and are the parents of Josh, Emma, Charlie, and Sam. A proud publicschool product, Governor Murphy holds degrees from Harvard University and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

COVID-19 CHALLENGER JEANETTE KOWALIK, PHD, MPH, MCHES Commissioner of Public Health; Milwaukee, WI Dr. Jeanette Kowalik has over a decade of progressive public health experience representing the life course. She began her career as an intern at the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD). Kowalik was drawn to public health, so she attended Northern Illinois University’s Master of Public Health program while maintaining full-time employment in the field. Post completion of her MPH, she attended the Management Academy for Public Health at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She began her doctorate in health sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee shortly thereafter. Her initial focus was infant mortality disparities among African American and Latinx adolescents. This shifted after she realized the significant gap in research regarding recruitment and retention of the public health workforce. Kowalik completed her coursework and dissertation while working full time for the Wauwatosa Health Department, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, and the Chicago Department of Public Health.

In the fall of 2014, Kowalik returned to Wisconsin and served as UW-Madison’s Director of Prevention and Campus Health Initiatives prior to her transition to the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP) in Washington DC. Kowalik served as the Associate Director of Women’s and Infant Health at AMCHP, a professional membership organization for maternal and child health professionals nationwide. She returned to her hometown of Milwaukee to serve as the Commissioner of Health in 2018. Under her leadership, Milwaukee declared racism a public health crisis in 2019 and the city and county were among the first in the nation to publicly report data on the race and ethnicity of COVID-19 patients and those who died from the virus. Kowalik’s diverse set of experiences continues to motivate her to advocate and represent those who are unable to “have a seat at the table.”

GENIUS AWARD HONOREE JENNIFER A. LEWIS

3D Bioprinting Pioneer Wyss Professor of Biologically Inspired Engineering Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Imagine a world in which a skin graft, a kidney, or even a human heart could be 3D printed on demand. The audacious bioprinting engineer, Jennifer Lewis, and her team at Harvard are bringing that prospect closer to reality with their innovative development of a method that allows creation of thick vascularized tissues and 3D organs. Using a custom-built 3D printer and unique inks that contain the building blocks of human tissue, they lay down layer upon layer of tissue seeded with living cells. One critical advance from Lewis’s team is the engineering and construction of a network of tubes that mimic blood vessels. Lewis formulated an ink that, when cooled, leaves a web of open channels inside—much like the pathways of human arteries and veins. A vascular system to deliver nutrients throughout bioprinted tissue will be essential to its survival. Together, these advances are on track to revolutionize drug safety testing, organ donation, and more.

Lewis holds an Sc.D. in ceramic science from MIT, and has also worked to develop flexible electronics and soft robotics. In 2016, she introduced the octopus-inspired “octobot,” the first entirely soft, autonomous robot, which combines embedded 3D printing, modeling, and soft lithography. She has been awarded the NSF Presidential Faculty Fellow Award, the Brunauer Award from the American Ceramic Society, and honors from the American Chemical Society and Materials Research Society. She has authored more than 150 papers and 30 patents, and is cofounder of two technology companies supporting her pioneering work.

ANTHONY BROOKS Speedcuber

Anthony Brooks is a consultant, entertainer, teacher, and Rubik’s Cube master. One of the world’s fastest speedcubers since 2008, he is a three-time US national champion dubbed “the Michael Jordan of Rubik’s Cubes” by Huffington Post. A consultant on the Beyond Rubik’s Cube exhibition, Brooks joined LSC as Speedcuber-in-Residence in 2014. At LSC, he solved five cubes underwater in a single breath to break the official Guinness World Record. Within the global community of speedcubers, Brooks is known as the top algorithm developer. His most recent project, ZB-AB, is an extensive system of 1,209 speed-optimal algorithms—the most advanced cube solving method ever created, if you don’t count robots. In the semi-finals of the 2019 US national championship, he solved the cube in 5.44 seconds using his handcrafted ZB-AB system. Brooks studied economics, business administration and Spanish at the University of Texas while developing his business as the first professional speedcuber. Since graduating in 2017, he has been performing and teaching at events throughout North America, Asia, Europe, and Africa. 18 .

COVID-19 CHALLENGER GEORGE M. CHURCH, PHD Robert Winthrop Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School Founding member of the Wyss Institute Church is known for pioneering the fields of personal genomics and synthetic biology. He developed the first methods for the first genome sequence and made dramatic cost reductions since then (down from $3 billion to $600), contributing to nearly all “next generation sequencing” methods and companies. Under his leadership, Jersey City became the first city in the state—and the sixth city in the country—to ensure paid sick leave. Mayor Fulop has pioneered new ideas for helping prisoners re-enter society; he’s passed legislation to protect small businesses and encouraged more to open shop; made Jersey City one of the greenest cities in the nation. He’s undertaken sweeping public safety reform, with the JCPD now seen as a model for diversity around the nation. Mayor Fulop is a first-generation American, a lifelong New Jerseyan, a Marine, and a triathlete. He grew up in a Jewish family in Edison, New Jersey, the son of Romanian immigrants. Mayor Fulop graduated from Binghamton University in 1999 and spent time abroad studying at Oxford University in the UK. After college, he joined Goldman Sachs, the investment banking firm, working in Chicago and later in Manhattan and Jersey City. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Fulop was working in lower Manhattan when he saw the first plane strike the Twin Towers. A few weeks later, he decided to put his career at Goldman Sachs on hold and join the United States Marine Corps. Mayor Fulop’s Reserve Unit deployed to Iraq in January 2003. There, he served as part of the 6th Engineer Support Battalion. He traveled into Baghdad during the early weeks of the war. In 2006, Mayor Fulop completed his service to the Marine Corps Reserve with the rank of Corporal. In 2005, Mayor Fulop was first elected to public office as the councilman representing downtown Jersey City. He served as a councilman for eight years before becoming mayor. He and his wife, Jaclyn, welcomed their first child, Jaxon, in early 2019. The mayor is an avid runner and triathlete. He ran the NYC Marathon in 2012, raising money for the Hudson County Child Abuse Prevention Center. He also competed in the Ironman Championship in NYC that year to raise money for veterans.

JAGDEEP BHATIA , 18, recently placed second in the 2020 Regeneron Science Talent Search for his work in artificial intelligence and machine learning. He is currently a first-year student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

RAMZI SABER spent his childhood in Casablanca, Morocco, where the stars are clear and bright over the Western Sahara. Once relocated to New Jersey, he kept his eyes on the skies—and gathered the first concrete mathematical, visual, and chemical data of an exoplanet 125 light years away.

Dr. Halkitis is also the founder and director of the Center for Health, Identity, Behavior & Prevention Studies (CHIBPS). For three decades, Halkitisâ€™ program of research has examined the intersection between HIV, HPV, and other STIs, drug abuse, and mental health burden, with regard to the biological, behavioral, psychosocial, and structural factors that predispose these and other health disparities in the LGBTQ+ population. His research program has been awarded more than $30 million in grant funding.

Most recently, he has been involved with New Jerseyâ€™s COVID-19 contact tracing efforts, helping to develop the curriculum and launch the New Jersey Community Contact Tracing Corps.

She holds dual Bachelor of Science degrees in biochemistry and systems biology from Virginia Tech and is pursuing her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Zaks oversees clinical development and regulatory affairs across Moderna, one of the groups working to develop a vaccine candidate against the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Prior to joining Moderna, Zaks was SVP and head of Global Oncology at Sanofi, where he was responsible for all aspects of oncology drug discovery, development, and commercialization. Zaks began his industry career at GlaxoSmithKline in the genetics research group, where he built the oncology translational medicine team and led translational research on lapatinib as well as the in-licensing and clinical development of foretinib. In addition to his industry work, Zaks is associate professor of medicine at the

University of Pennsylvania, and has served as a volunteer physician at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Medical Center, treating patients with genitourinary cancers. Dr. Zaks received his MD and PhD from the Ben Gurion University in Israel and conducted postdoctoral research at the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Safdie has also designed leading museums, including Yad Vashem in Jerusalem; Virasat-e-Khalsa—the museum of Sikhism—in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, India; and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. While overseeing the work of his architectural offices in Montreal, Jerusalem, Boston, and Toronto, he has served as the director of the urban design program and professor of architecture and urban design at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. In 2015, Safdie was awarded the American Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal in recognition of his global influence. David M. Daly is president and chief operating officer of Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G). PSE&G is New Jersey’s oldest and largest regulated gas and electric delivery utility, serving approximately 2.4 million customers, nearly three-quarters of the state’s population. In addition, Mr. Daly serves as Chairman of the Board of PSEG Long Island, a subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG), which has been managing the electric transmission and distribution systems on Long Island and in the Rockaways since January 2014. PSEG Long Island serves 1.1 million customers.

Bronstein joined Bank of America in 2000 and has held various roles supporting Global Markets, Global Investment Banking and the international regions. She served most recently as global human resources executive for Global Banking and Markets. Prior to joining Bank of America, she worked at JP Morgan in a variety of human resources capacities. Bronstein spearheads domestic violence awareness initiatives for the company, and is the executive sponsor of the company’s Domestic Violence Task Force. She was also selected as a Global Ambassador for the company’s partnership with Vital Voices in Poland. The program brings together influential global women leaders from public and private sectors to mentor women from emerging markets engaged in small businesses and social enterprises. In 2017, Bronstein was recognized by the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation for her and the company’s commitment to supporting the well-being of employees through domestic violence awareness, prevention and resource sharing. Bronstein also serves on the Steering Committee for Paradigm for Parity, a coalition of business leaders, board members, and academics committed to addressing the corporate leadership gender gap. Prior to joining Verizon in 2013, Ellis spent 15 years at Tyson Foods, Inc. in a variety of roles. Most recently, he was Vice President & Treasurer responsible for financing, cash management, insurance and credit. From 2007 through 2010 Ellis was Vice President, Finance where he was responsible for M&A activity, including transactions in China, Brazil and India. Laura Overdeck founded Bedtime Math, a nonprofit that helps young kids love math and excel at it. Bedtime Math serves up zany nightly math problems for families through its research-proven app, which has been downloaded over a quarter million times. Overdeck has also authored four Bedtime Math books (Macmillan), each of which was named an Amazon Book of the Month, and created Crazy 8s, a recreational after-school math club with more than 100,000 participants to date. A Princeton astrophysics alumna and Wharton MBA, she also chairs Overdeck Family Foundation, which supports STEM education reform. In addition to her service to LSC, she is a trustee at Princeton University and the Pingry School, and serves on the advisory boards of Khan Academy and Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.

Prior to his role at CarePoint, Mandler launched several successful healthcare businesses, including the medical staffing and consulting firm Cardiovascular Solutions, and Healthcare Imaging Solutions, LLC in the Baltimore region. He had served as director of business development for the Mid-Atlantic and New England at MedCath Diagnostics in Charlotte, NC, where he supervised the development of sleep centers, cardiac cath labs, nuclear nuclear cardiology labs and other specialty centers across the region. Mandler began his career as the Chief Nuclear Cardiology Technologist at Hahneman University Hospital in Philadelphia before transitioning to healthcare business development. Mr. Tusar is a senior executive with more than 25 years of experience in securities trading and technology. Prior to joining Coinbase, Tusar was the head of Client Market Making and Execution Services at KCG in New York City. There he was responsible for wholesale market making and algorithmic trading among other groups, taking a lead role in recasting the company’s strategy through refocusing on new business units, building up ETF sales and trading, and refining and expanding firm-wide recruiting.

Under his leadership, the company has accelerated its transition from payroll processor to Human Capital Management services provider with a comprehensive “hire-to-retire” portfolio, including benefits administration. It has also nearly doubled the number of clients using its cloud-based services. And its Professional Employer Organization (PEO) business has nearly doubled the number of client employees served, putting it on par with the nation’s largest employers. After joining ADP in 1999 through its acquisition of Vincam, Carlos held a series of positions with increasing responsibilities before becoming CEO. He served initially as CFO for a short period before becoming President of ADP TotalSource. Under his leadership, TotalSource became the fastest-growing and largest PEO in the industry. He also served as President of the National Account Services and Employer Services International divisions, which serve large companies, and spent several years as President of the Small Business Services (SBS) division. While in that role he oversaw the launch of the cloud-based “RUN Powered by ADP®” payroll management service. Norman Worthington is a serial entrepreneur and investor, and founder or co-founder of more than a dozen companies. One of his earliest ventures was Software Toolworks, one of the first highly successful consumer software companies. Several of the original Software Toolworks titles are among the all-time best-selling products in their categories, including Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing! and the Chessmaster series. These titles are still available today, and each has sold tens of millions of copies. Software Toolworks became a public company in the early 90s and was subsequently purchased and taken private. It was acquired by Mattel in 1999. In 1993, Worthington entered a joint venture with Computer Associates (CA), the world’s fourth-largest software company. REMEMBERING BETTY WOLD JOHNSON By Paul Hoffman Betty Wold Johnson, one of LSC’s most generous benefactors, died peacefully on May 5 at the age of 99. Mrs. Johnson was an extraordinary woman. She was a very private person, known publicly for her love of football (her sons own the Jets) and her generous philanthropic support of the performing arts throughout New Jersey. Less well known was her amateur interest in astronomy. She followed developments in modern cosmology. Everything about black holes, I learned, delighted her. She visited LSC for the first time when she was in her mid 90s, after she heard that LSC was building the largest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere. Her assistant advised us that the visit would be strictly limited to an hour and would be confined to my office because she did not have the strength to walk around the Center. The visit was repeatedly rescheduled for over a year. When she finally came to LSC, we sat in my office and talked. Her assistant gently told her when an hour had passed. She ignored him and spent a second hour walking slowly with Chris Schroeder and me around the third floor. She particularly liked the naked mole rats. Later she told me that while she had always expected LSC to be a great place for children, she was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was also a great place for adults. As part of LSC’s 25th anniversary campaign, she made a $5,000,000 gift and asked that it be used for non-glamorous facility needs like refurbishing bathrooms and plugging leaking roofs. Amazing!

about LSC at a private club in Princeton, NJ, near where she lived. Mrs. Johnson told me that she was looking forward to attending. That morning her representatives called and said she wouldn’t make the talk because she had to have emergency dental work at a hospital. Halfway through my talk, she shuffled into the room and sat stoically. She still had on her hospital bracelet and looked very much like someone who had just had an uncomfortable medical procedure. When I went up to her afterward, she said the anesthesia hadn’t yet worn off and that her doctors had urged her to go straight home and take it easy. “And I weighed my options,” she told me, “I could go home and sit in a chair and feel miserable. Or I could come here, sit in a chair, feel just as miserable, but listen to you.” After her passing, we received from her estate a second $5,000,000 gift, this one to renovate LSC’s 163-foot-tall pyramidal tower. The observation floor at the top of the tower offers stunning 360-degree views of Jersey City, lower Manhattan, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, and the Verrazano Bridge, but it is a challenging and underutilized space because it lacks restrooms, a food-prep area, and storage. For the past two years, Mrs. Johnson and I had talked several times about making the observation floor a duplex by adding a second floor, just below the current one, to house restrooms, a kitchen, a classroom, and storage closets. Her very generous bequest will fund this renovation and allow us to create LSC’s most dramatic learning space and one of the most spectacular event spaces in New Jersey. In accordance with her wishes, LSC’s tower will be named after her late husband and called the Robert Wood Johnson III Tower.

Her eyesight was very bad these past couple of years. I fondly remember her asking me to read aloud a passage from one of Carl Sagan’s books. She greatly admired Sagan but never met him, and she enjoyed my telling her stories about what he was like in person. Last year I gave a talk 41 .
